Abstract

Drug abusers undergoing therapeutic programs in Greece are studied to determine the prevalence of personality disorders. Results show that about 59.5% of the 226 subjects were afflicted with at least one AXIS II personality disorder. About 50% of subjects had Cluster B personality disorder while 28.9% and 15% had Clusters C and A disorders, respectively. Antisocial personality disorder was also the most prevalent type of disorder.

156. An association of economic hardship with depression and suicidality in times of recession in Greece

Abstract

The interplay between objective and subjective measures of economic hardship on influencing mental health has not been explored during a period of enduring recession. The present study aims to fill this gap by investigating the relationship between income and economic difficulties in evoking major depression and suicidality in Greece, while taking into consideration gender differences. A random and representative sample of 2188 adults participated in a telephone survey in 2013 (response rate = 81%). Major depression and suicidality were assessed with the pertinent modules of SCID-IV; while financial difficulties were measured by the Index of Personal Economic Distress. Information on confounder variables was also gleaned. Income exerted an independent effect on major depression (OR = 0.37, 95%CI = 0.22–0.63), which was more pronounced among men than women. On the contrary, financial difficulties exerted a strong and independent effect on depression (OR = 1.16, 95%CI = 1.13–1.2). Income was found to bear a strong association with suicidality only among men; whereas financial difficulties were unrelated in both genders. Subjective and objective indices of economic hardship exert a differential impact on mental health outcomes amid recession. Gender-sensitive policies and interventions should be geared towards softening the social effects of the recession in the country. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

We consider the lightcone sum-rule (LCSR) description of the pion-photon transition form factor in combination with the renormalization group of QCD. The emerging scheme represents a certain version of Fractional Analytic Perturbation Theory and significantly extends the applicability domain of perturbation theory towards lower momenta $Q^2\lesssim 1$ GeV$^2$. We show that the predictions calculated herewith agree very well with the released preliminary data of the BESIII experiment, which have very small errors just in this region, while the agreement with other data at higher $Q^2$ is compatible with the LCSR predictions obtained recently by one of us using fixed-order perturbation theory., 8 pages, 1 figure, talk presented at the "XXIV International Workshop on High Energy Physics and Quantum Field Theory" (22 - 29 September 2019, Sochi, Russia). Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to systematically appraise the meta-analyses of observational studies on risk factors and peripheral biomarkers for schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Methods: We conducted an umbrella review to capture all meta-analyses and Mendelian randomization studies that examined associations between non-genetic risk factors and schizophrenia spectrum disorders. For each eligible meta-analysis, we estimated the summary effect size estimate, its 95% confidence and prediction intervals and the I2 metric. Additionally, evidence for small-study effects and excess significance bias was assessed. Results: Overall, we found 41 eligible papers including 98 associations. Abstract

The hypothesis that the S allele of the 5-HTTLPR serotonin transporter promoter region is associated with increased risk of depression, but only in individuals exposed to stressful situations, has generated much interest, research and controversy since first proposed in 2003. Multiple meta-analyses combining results from heterogeneous analyses have not settled the issue. To determine the magnitude of the interaction and the conditions under which it might be observed, we performed new analyses on 31 data sets containing 38 802 European ancestry subjects genotyped for 5-HTTLPR and assessed for depression and childhood maltreatment or other stressful life events, and meta-analysed the results. Analyses targeted two stressors (narrow, broad) and two depression outcomes (current, lifetime). All groups that published on this topic prior to the initiation of our study and met the assessment and sample size criteria were invited to participate. Additional groups, identified by consortium members or self-identified in response to our protocol (published prior to the start of analysis) with qualifying unpublished data, were also invited to participate. A uniform data analysis script implementing the protocol was executed by each of the consortium members. Our findings do not support the interaction hypothesis. We found no subgroups or variable definitions for which an interaction between stress and 5-HTTLPR genotype was statistically significant. In contrast, our findings for the main effects of life stressors (strong risk factor) and 5-HTTLPR genotype (no impact on risk) are strikingly consistent across our contributing studies, the original study reporting the interaction and subsequent meta-analyses. Our conclusion is that if an interaction exists in which the S allele of 5-HTTLPR increases risk of depression only in stressed individuals, then it is not broadly generalisable, but must be of modest effect size and only observable in limited situations.

Abstract

General cognitive function is a prominent and relatively stable human trait that is associated with many important life outcomes. We combine cognitive and genetic data from the CHARGE and COGENT consortia, and UK Biobank (total N = 300,486; age 16-102) and find 148 genome-wide significant independent loci (P < 5 × 10-8) associated with general cognitive function. Within the novel genetic loci are variants associated with neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders, physical and psychiatric illnesses, and brain structure. Gene-based analyses find 709 genes associated with general cognitive function. Expression levels across the cortex are associated with general cognitive function. Using polygenic scores, up to 4.3% of variance in general cognitive function is predicted in independent samples. We detect significant genetic overlap between general cognitive function, reaction time, and many health variables including eyesight, hypertension, and longevity. In conclusion we identify novel genetic loci and pathways contributing to the heritability of general cognitive function.

Abstract

Intelligence is highly heritable 1 and a major determinant of human health and well-being 2 . Recent genome-wide meta-analyses have identified 24 genomic loci linked to variation in intelligence 3-7, but much about its genetic underpinnings remains to be discovered. Here, we present a large-scale genetic association study of intelligence (n = 269,867), identifying 205 associated genomic loci (190 new) and 1,016 genes (939 new) via positional mapping, expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) mapping, chromatin interaction mapping, and gene-based association analysis. We find enrichment of genetic effects in conserved and coding regions and associations with 146 nonsynonymous exonic variants. Associated genes are strongly expressed in the brain, specifically in striatal medium spiny neurons and hippocampal pyramidal neurons. Gene set analyses implicate pathways related to nervous system development and synaptic structure. We confirm previous strong genetic correlations with multiple health-related outcomes, and Mendelian randomization analysis results suggest protective effects of intelligence for Alzheimer's disease and ADHD and bidirectional causation with pleiotropic effects for schizophrenia. These results are a major step forward in understanding the neurobiology of cognitive function as well as genetically related neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Abstract

The complex nature of human cognition has resulted in cognitive genomics lagging behind many other fields in terms of gene discovery using genome-wide association study (GWAS) methods. In an attempt to overcome these barriers, the current study utilized GWAS meta-analysis to examine the association of common genetic variation (similar to 8M single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) with minor allele frequency >= 1%) to general cognitive function in a sample of 35 298 healthy individuals of European ancestry across 24 cohorts in the Cognitive Genomics Consortium (COGENT). In addition, we utilized individual SNP lookups and polygenic score analyses to identify genetic overlap with other relevant neurobehavioral phenotypes. Abstract

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder striking mainly young adults and leading to life-long disability in a substantial portion of the sufferers. On the other hand, substantial knowledge about its etiology and pathogenesis is still lacking. Therefore the European Science Foundation (ESF) sponsored a meeting of a panel of European experts on schizophrenia research to discuss the state of art and future perspectives of key topics in this area. The fields covered genetics, epidemiology, animal models, molecular neuropathology and imaging. This was a first step to establish a network of European groups dedicated to Schizophrenia research. The coming calls of the frame work program will be used to strengthen this network in order to achieve substantial progress in understanding and treating this devastating illness.

Abstract

We consider the pion-photon transition form factor at low to intermediate spacelike momenta within the theoretical framework of light-cone sum rules. We derive predictions which take into account all currently known contributions stemming from QCD perturbation theory up to the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) and by including all twist terms up to order six. In order to enable a more detailed comparison with forthcoming high-precision data, we also estimate the main systematic theoretical uncertainties, stemming from various sources, and discuss their influence on the calculations -- in particular the dominant one related to the still uncalculated part of the NNLO contribution. Abstract

Since the seminal study of Steinbeck and Durell (1968), few epidemiological studies have attempted to replicate whether psychosocial stress precipitates the onset of a first psychotic episode. Our aim was to support or refute the finding of elevated psychosis incidence in the first month of army induction and to examine factors impacting the timing of onset. Data were collected from medical files of 186 army conscripts, hospitalized with a diagnosis of First Episode Psychosis (FEP) between 2005 and 2014 in the Psychiatric Military Hospital in Athens, Greece. FEP rates were at least 4.5 times higher in the first month of military service, compared with any other month. Earlier FEP onset was associated with rural environment at the time of birth, multiple drug use and service away from home. Abstract

Background There may be biological plausibility to the notion that cannabis use and childhood trauma or maltreatment synergistically increase the risk for later development of psychotic symptoms. To replicate and further investigate this issue, prospective data from two independent population-based studies, the Greek National Perinatal Study (n=1636) and The Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study (NEMESIS) (n=4842), were analyzed.Method Two different data sets on cannabis use and childhood maltreatment were used. In a large Greek population-based cohort study, data on cannabis use at age 19 years and childhood maltreatment at 7 years were assessed. In addition, psychotic symptoms were assessed using the Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences (CAPE). In NEMESIS, the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) was used to assess psychotic symptoms at three different time points along with childhood maltreatment and lifetime cannabis use.Results A significant adjusted interaction between childhood maltreatment and later cannabis use was evident in both samples, indicating that the psychosis-inducing effects of cannabis were stronger in individuals exposed to earlier sexual or physical mistreatment [Greek National Perinatal Study: test for interaction F(2, 1627)=4.18, p=0.02; NEMESIS: test for interaction ?2(3)=8.08, p=0.04].Conclusions Cross-sensitivity between childhood maltreatment and cannabis use may exist in pathways that shape the risk for expression of positive psychotic symptoms. © 2011 Cambridge University Press.

Abstract

Background/Aims: The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in serum and the central nervous system are altered in patients with schizophrenia, suggesting that changes in the expression of BDNF might contribute to the disease pathophysiology. Long duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) has been associated with poorer prognosis in patients with schizophrenia. Such a relationship of untreated psychosis to outcome may indicate a neurodegenerative process and may have important implications for understanding the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Methods: In this study, we investigated the association between serum BDNF levels and DUP in a sample of drug-naïve patients in their first episode of schizophrenia (FEP). We investigated serum BDNF levels in a sample of 37 drug-naïve FEP patients and 21 matched healthy subjects. Results: The serum BDNF level in the sample of FEP was significantly reduced compared to the healthy subjects (18.87 ± 8.23 vs. 29.2 ± 7.73 ng/ml, t = 4.76, d.f. = 57, p = 0.01). A negative correlation was found between serum BDNF levels and DUP in the group of patients (r = -0.346, p = 0.036). Conclusions: Our findings indicate that low serum BDNF levels at the onset of schizophrenia were associated with a long DUP and this could reflect an acute neurodegenerative reaction during the untreated phase of psychosis. © 2010 S. Abstract

We use light-cone QCD sum rules to calculate the pion-photon transition form factor, taking into account radiative corrections up to the next-to-next-to-leading order of perturbation theory. We compare the obtained predictions with all available experimental data from the CELLO, CLEO, and the BaBar Collaborations. We point out that the BaBar data are incompatible with the convolution scheme of QCD, on which our predictions are based, and can possibly be explained only with a violation of the factorization theorem. Abstract

We describe the present status of the pion distribution amplitude (DA) as it originates from several sources: (i) a nonperturbative approach based on QCD sum rules with nonlocal condensates, (ii) an $O(\alpha_s)$ QCD analysis of the CLEO data on F^{\gamma\gamma^*\pi}(Q^2) with asymptotic and renormalon models for higher twists, and (iii) recent high-precision lattice QCD calculations of the second moment of the pion DA. We show predictions for the pion electromagnetic form factor, obtained in analytic QCD perturbation theory, and compare it with the JLab data on F_{\pi}(Q^2). We also discuss in this context an improved model for nonlocal condensates in QCD and show its consequences for the pion DA and the \gamma\gamma^*\to\pi transition form factor. 193. Association of RGS4 variants with schizotypy and cognitive endophenotypes at the population level

Abstract

BACKGROUND: While association studies on schizophrenia show conflicting results regarding the importance of the regulator of the G-protein signaling 4 (RGS4) gene, recent work suggests that RGS4 may impact on the structural and functional integrity of the prefrontal cortex. We aimed to study associations of common RGS4 variants with prefrontal dependent cognitive performance and schizotypy endophenotypes at the population level. METHODS: Four RGS4 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP1 [rs10917670], SNP4 [rs951436], SNP7 [rs951439], and SNP18 [rs2661319]) and their haplotypes were selected. Their associations with self-rated schizotypy (SPQ), vigilance, verbal, spatial working memory and antisaccade eye performance were tested with regressions in a representative population of 2,243 young male military conscripts. RESULTS: SNP4 was associated with negative schizotypy (higher SPQ negative factor for common T allele, p = 0.009; p = 0.031 for differences across genotypes) and a similar trend was seen also for common A allele of SNP18 (p = 0.039 for allele-load model; but p = 0.12 for genotype differences). Haplotype analyses showed a similar pattern with a dose-response for the most common haplotype (GGGG) on the negative schizotypy score with or without adjustment for age, IQ and their interaction (p = 0.011 and p = 0.024, respectively). There was no clear evidence for any association of the RGS4 variants with cognitive endophenotypes, except for an isolated effect of SNP18 on antisaccade error rate (p = 0.028 for allele-load model). CONCLUSION: Common RGS4 variants were associated with negative schizotypal personality traits amongst a large cohort of young healthy individuals. In accordance with recent findings, this may suggest that RGS4 variants impact on the functional integrity of the prefrontal cortex, thus increasing susceptibility for psychotic spectrum disorders. Abstract

We study the phenomenon of duality in hard exclusive reactions to which QCD factorization applies. Considering "two-photon"-like processes in the scalar $��^3_E$ model and also hadron-pair production from the collisions of a real (transversely polarized) and a highly virtual, longitudinally polarized, photon in QCD, we identify two regimes of factorization each of them associated with a distinct nonperturbative mechanism. One mechanism involves twist-3 Generalized Distribution Amplitudes, whereas the other one employs leading-twist Transition Distribution Amplitudes. In the case of the scalar $��^3_E$ model, we find duality in that kinematical region where the two mechanisms overlap. In the QCD case, the appearance of duality is sensitive to the particular nonperturbative model applied and can, therefore, be used as an additional adjudicator., 14 pages, 8 figures. We present a detailed analysis of meson-induced massive lepton (muon) Drell--Yan production for the process $��^{-}N\to��^{+}��^{-}X$, considering both an unpolarized nucleon target and longitudinally polarized protons. Using a QCD framework, we focus on the angular distribution of $��^+$, which is sensitive to the shape of the pion distribution amplitude, the goal being to test corresponding results against available experimental data. Predictions are made, employing various pion distribution amplitudes, for the azimuthal angle dependence of the $��^{+}$ distribution in the polarized case, relevant for the planned COMPASS experiment. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Aspects of cognitive function and schizotypy have been proposed as potential endophenotypes for schizophrenia. It is unknown whether the expression of these endophenotypes at the population level is modulated by the genetic variability of candidate susceptibility genes for schizophrenia. METHODS: We examined the potential impact of 18 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the DTNBP1, NRG1, DAOA/G32, and DAAO genes, on cognition and self-rated schizotypy, in a representative population of 2243 young male military conscripts. Single SNP and haplotype associations were evaluated. RESULTS: The DTNBP1 SNPs rs2619522 and rs760761 exhibited several single marker associations, the minor alleles being associated with lower attention capacity but also a decrease in positive and paranoid schizotypy scores. The DTNBP1 haplotype load had borderline associations with nonverbal IQ, paranoid schizotypy, and sustained attention. For individual NRG1 polymorphisms, isolated but weak signals of association were noted with sustained attention and working memory but not schizotypy. The risk allele of functional SNP8NRG243177 was associated with reduced spatial working memory capacity. An isolated effect of DAAO haplotype variability was noted on negative and disorganization schizotypy. No convincing association of DAOA/G32 variability was detected. CONCLUSIONS: The DTNBP1 and, less so, NRG1 and DAAO variants might exert gene-specific modulating effects on schizophrenia endophenotypes at the population level. Biol Psychiatry

Abstract

Different ``analytization'' procedures for the factorized pion form factor are discussed in comparison with the standard QCD perturbation theory at NLO. It is argued that demanding the analyticity of the exclusive amplitude as a \emph{whole}, entails insensitivity of the results on all scheme and scale-setting parameters, including the factorization scale. 199. Hearing impairment and psychosis: A replication in a cohort of young adults

Abstract

Previous work has demonstrated an association between hearing impairment and psychosis. In the current study, this association was studied in a cohort of young people. In addition, it was studied to what degree duration of hearing problems (i.e. onset earlier in life) impacted on risk. Data were derived from the Greek National Perinatal Survey, a prospective birth cohort study of 11,048 neonates at baseline, 6594 seven-year olds at T1 and 3500 nineteen-year olds at T2. A significant association was found at age 19 years between the presence of hearing impairment and the presence of self-reported positive psychotic-like experiences (β = 0.18, S.E. = 0.02, p < 0.000). In addition, this association was conditional on the duration of hearing problems, in that the association at age 19 years was stronger if hearing impairment had already been reported at age 7 years (test for interaction: p = 0.022). These results replicate previous findings of an association between hearing impairment and psychosis, extend it to the age range of late adolescence, and suggest that longer duration is associated with stronger risk. © 2006 Elsevier B.V.
