Using Planck maps of six regions of low Galactic dust emission with a total area of about 140 square degrees, we determine the angular power spectra of cosmic infrared background (CIB) anisotropies from multipole l = 200 to l = 2000 at 217, 353, 545 and 857 GHz. We use 21-cm observations of HI as a tracer of thermal dust emission to reduce the already low level of Galactic dust emission and use the 143 GHz Planck maps in these fields to clean out cosmic microwave background anisotropies. Both of these cleaning processes are necessary to avoid significant contamination of the CIB signal. We measure correlated CIB structure across frequencies. As expected, the correlation decreases with increasing frequency separation, because the contribution of high-redshift galaxies to CIB anisotropies increases with wavelengths. We find no significant difference between the frequency spectrum of the CIB anisotropies and the CIB mean, with Delta I/I=15% from 217 to 857 GHz. In terms of clustering properties, the Planck data alone rule out the linear scale- and redshift-independent bias model. Non-linear corrections are significant. Consequently, we develop an alternative model that couples a dusty galaxy, parametric evolution model with a simple halo-model approach. It provides an excellent fit to the measured anisotropy angular power spectra and suggests that a different halo occupation distribution is required at each frequency, which is consistent with our expectation that each frequency is dominated by contributions from different redshifts. In our best-fit model, half of the anisotropy power at l=2000 comes from redshifts z<0.8 at 857 GHz and z<1.5 at 545 GHz, while about 90% come from redshifts z>2 at 353 and 217 GHz, respectively., Comment: Final A&A version. We construct an all-sky map of the apparent temperature and optical depth of thermal dust emission using the Planck-HFI and IRAS data. The optical depth maps are correlated to tracers of the atomic and molecular gas. The correlation is linear in the lowest column density regions at high galactic latitudes. At high NH, the correlation is consistent with that of the lowest NH. In the intermediate NH range, we observe departure from linearity, with the dust optical depth in excess to the correlation. We attribute this excess emission to thermal emission by dust associated with a Dark-Gas phase, undetected in the available HI and CO measurements. We show the 2D spatial distribution of the Dark-Gas in the solar neighborhood and show that it extends around known molecular regions traced by CO. The average dust emissivity in the HI phase in the solar neighborhood follows roughly a power law distribution with beta = 1.8 all the way down to 3 mm, although the SED flattens slightly in the millimetre. The threshold for the existence of the Dark-Gas is found at NH = (8.0\pm 0.58) 10^{20} Hcm-2. Assuming the same dust emissivity at high frequencies for the dust in the atomic and molecular phases leads to an average XCO = (2.54\pm0.13) 10^{20} H2cm-2/(K km s-1). The mass of Dark-Gas is found to be 28% of the atomic gas and 118% of the CO emitting gas in the solar neighborhood. A possible origin for the Dark-Gas is the existence of a dark molecular phase, where H2 survives photodissociation but CO does not. The observed transition for the onset of this phase in the solar neighborhood (AV = 0.4 mag) appears consistent with recent theoretical predictions. We present precise Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect measurements in the direction of 62 nearby galaxy clusters (z <0.5) detected at high signal-to-noise in the first Planck all-sky dataset. The sample spans approximately a decade in total mass, 10^14 < M_500 < 10^15, where M_500 is the mass corresponding to a total density contrast of 500. Combining these high quality Planck measurements with deep XMM-Newton X-ray data, we investigate the relations between D_A^2 Y_500, the integrated Compton parameter due to the SZ effect, and the X-ray-derived gas mass M_g,500, temperature T_X, luminosity L_X, SZ signal analogue Y_X,500 = M_g,500 * T_X, and total mass M_500. After correction for the effect of selection bias on the scaling relations, we find results that are in excellent agreement with both X-ray predictions and recently-published ground-based data derived from smaller samples. We present the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) signal-to-richness scaling relation (Y500-N200) for the MaxBCG cluster catalogue. Employing a multi-frequency matched filter on the Planck sky maps, we measure the SZ signal for each cluster by adapting the filter according to weak-lensing calibrated mass-richness relations (N200-M500). We bin our individual measurements and detect the SZ signal down to the lowest richness systems (N200=10) with high significance, achieving a detection of the SZ signal in systems with mass as low as M500~5e13 Msolar. The observed Y500-N200 relation is well modeled by a power law over the full richness range. It has a lower normalisation at given N200 than predicted based on X-ray models and published mass-richness relations. An X-ray subsample, however, does conform to the predicted scaling, and model predictions do reproduce the relation between our measured bin-average SZ signal and measured bin-average X-ray luminosities. At fixed richness, we find an intrinsic dispersion in the Y500-N200 relation of 60% rising to of order 100% at low richness. Thanks to its all-sky coverage, Planck provides observations for more than 13,000 MaxBCG clusters and an unprecedented SZ/optical data set, extending the list of known cluster scaling laws to include SZ-optical properties. The data set offers essential clues for models of galaxy formation. We present the first all-sky sample of galaxy clusters detected blindly by the Planck satellite through the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect from its six highest frequencies. This early SZ (ESZ) sample is comprised of 189 candidates, which have a high signal-to-noise ratio ranging from 6 to 29. Its high reliability (purity above 95%) is further ensured by an extensive validation process based on Planck internal quality assessments and by external cross-identification and follow-up observations. Planck provides the first measured SZ signal for about 80% of the 169 previously-known ESZ clusters. Planck furthermore releases 30 new cluster candidates, amongst which 20 meet the ESZ signal-to-noise selection criterion. At the submission date, twelve of the 20 ESZ candidates were confirmed as new clusters, with eleven confirmed using XMM-Newton snapshot observations, most of them with disturbed morphologies and low luminosities. The performance of the Planck instruments in space is enabled by their low operating temperatures, 20K for LFI and 0.1K for HFI, achieved through a combination of passive radiative cooling and three active mechanical coolers. The scientific requirement for very broad frequency coverage led to two detector technologies with widely different temperature and cooling needs. Active coolers could satisfy these needs; a helium cryostat, as used by previous cryogenic space missions (IRAS, COBE, ISO, Spitzer, AKARI), could not. Radiative cooling is provided by three V-groove radiators and a large telescope baffle. The active coolers are a hydrogen sorption cooler (<20K), a 4He Joule-Thomson cooler (4.7K), and a 3He-4He dilution cooler (1.4K and 0.1K). The flight system was at ambient temperature at launch and cooled in space to operating conditions. The HFI bolometer plate reached 93mK on 3 July 2009, 50 days after launch. The solar panel always faces the Sun, shadowing the rest of Planck, andoperates at a mean temperature of 384K. At the other end of the spacecraft, the telescope baffle operates at 42.3K and the telescope primary mirror operates at 35.9K. The temperatures of key parts of the instruments are stabilized by both active and passive methods. Temperature fluctuations are driven by changes in the distance from the Sun, sorption cooler cycling and fluctuations in gas-liquid flow, and fluctuations in cosmic ray flux on the dilution and bolometer plates. The Planck High Frequency Instrument (HFI) is designed to measure the temperature and polarization anisotropies of the Cosmic Microwave Background and galactic foregrounds in six wide bands centered at 100, 143, 217, 353, 545 and 857 GHz at an angular resolution of 10' (100 GHz), 7' (143 GHz), and 5' (217 GHz and higher). HFI has been operating flawlessly since launch on 14 May 2009. The bolometers cooled to 100 mK as planned. The settings of the readout electronics, such as the bolometer bias current, that optimize HFI's noise performance on orbit are nearly the same as the ones chosen during ground testing. Observations of Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn verified both the optical system and the time response of the detection chains. The optical beams are close to predictions from physical optics modeling. The time response of the detection chains is close to pre-launch measurements. The detectors suffer from an unexpected high flux of cosmic rays related to low solar activity. Due to the redundancy of Planck's observations strategy, the removal of a few percent of data contaminated by glitches does not affect significantly the sensitivity. The cosmic rays heat up significantly the bolometer plate and the modulation on periods of days to months of the heat load creates a common drift of all bolometer signals which do not affect the scientific capabilities. The European Space Agency's Planck satellite was launched on 14 May 2009, and has been surveying the sky stably and continuously since 13 August 2009. Its performance is well in line with expectations, and it will continue to gather scientific data until the end of its cryogenic lifetime. We give an overview of the history of Planck in its first year of operations, and describe some of the key performance aspects of the satellite. This paper is part of a package submitted in conjunction with Planck's Early Release Compact Source Catalogue, the first data product based on Planck to be released publicly. Planck's all sky surveys at 30-857 GHz provide an unprecedented opportunity to follow the radio spectra of a large sample of extragalactic sources to frequencies 2-20 times higher than allowed by past, large area, ground-based surveys. We combine the results of the Planck Early Release Compact Source Catalog (ERCSC) with quasi-simultaneous ground-based observations, as well as archival data, at frequencies below or overlapping Planck frequency bands, to validate the astrometry and photometry of the ERCSC radio sources and study the spectral features shown in this new frequency window opened by Planck. The ERCSC source positions and flux density scales are found to be consistent with the ground-based observations. We present and discuss the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of a sample of "extreme" radio sources to illustrate the richness of the ERCSC for the study of extragalactic radio sources. Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) are a feature imprinted in the density field by acoustic waves travelling in the plasma of the early universe. Their fixed scale can be used as a standard ruler to study the geometry of the universe. BAO have been previously detected using correlation functions and power spectra of the galaxy distribution. In this work, we present a new method for the detection of the real-space structures associated with this feature. These baryon acoustic structures are spherical shells with a relatively small density contrast, surrounding high density central regions. We design a specific wavelet adapted to the search for shells, and exploit the physics of the process by making use of two different mass tracers, introducing a specific statistic to detect the BAO features. We show the effect of the BAO signal in this new statistic when applied to the Lambda - Cold Dark Matter (LCDM) model, using an analytical approximation to the transfer function. We confirm the reliability and stability of our method by using cosmological N-body simulations from the MareNostrum Institut de Ci\`encies de l'Espai (MICE). We apply our method to the detection of BAO in a galaxy sample drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We use the `Main' catalogue to trace the shells, and the Luminous Red Galaxies (LRG) as tracers of the high density central regions. Using this new method, we detect, with a high significance, that the LRGs in our sample are preferentially located close to the centres of shell-like structures in the density field, with characteristics similar to those expected from BAOs. We show that stacking selected shells, we can find their characteristic density profile. We have delineated a new feature of the cosmic web, the BAO shells. As these are real spatial structures, the BAO phenomenon can be studied in detail by examining those shells., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, 1 table. One of the main challenges of modern cosmology is to understand the nature of dark energy. The Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect is sensitive to dark energy and presents an independent signature of dark energy in the absence of modified gravity and curvature. The ISW effect occurs on large scales, where cosmic variance is high and where there are large amounts of missing data in the CMB and large scale structure maps due to Galactic confusion. Moreover, existing methods in the literature often make strong assumptions about the statistics of the underlying fields or estimators. Together these effects can severely limit signal extraction. We review literature on the ISW effect, comparing statistical subtleties between existing methods, and identifying several limitations. We propose a novel method to detect and measure the ISW signal. This method assumes only that the primordial CMB field is Gaussian. It is based on a sparse inpainting method to reconstruct missing data and uses a bootstrap technique to avoid assumptions about the statistics of the estimator. It is a complete method, using three complementary statistical methods. We apply our method to Euclid-like simulations and show we can expect a \sim 7\sigma model-independent detection of the ISW signal with WMAP7-like data, even with missing data. Other tests return \sim 4.7\sigma detection levels for a Euclid-like survey, with levels independent from whether the galaxy field is normally or lognormally distributed. We apply our method to the 2 Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) and WMAP7 CMB data and find detections in the 1.1 - 2.0\sigma range, as expected from simulations. As a by-product, we reconstruct the full-sky temperature ISW field due to 2MASS data. The Large Area Telescope (LAT), the main instrument of the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope, detects high energy gamma rays with energies from 20 MeV to more than 300 GeV. The two main scientific ob jectives, the study of the Milky Way diffuse background and the detection of point sources, are complicated by the lack of photons. That is why we need a powerful Poisson noise removal method on the sphere which is efficient on low count Poisson data. This paper presents a new multiscale decomposition on the sphere for data with Poisson noise, called Multi-Scale Variance Stabilizing Transform on the Sphere (MS-VSTS). This method is based on a Variance Stabilizing Transform (VST), a transform which aims to stabilize a Poisson data set such that each stabilized sample has a quasi constant variance. In addition, for the VST used in the method, the transformed data are asymptotically Gaussian. MS-VSTS consists of decomposing the data into a sparse multi-scale dictionary like wavelets or curvelets, and then applying a VST on the coefficients in order to get almost Gaussian stabilized coefficients. In this work, we use the Isotropic Undecimated Wavelet Transform (IUWT) and the Curvelet Transform as spherical multi-scale transforms. Then, binary hypothesis testing is carried out to detect significant coefficients, and the denoised image is reconstructed with an iterative algorithm based on Hybrid Steepest Descent (HSD). To detect point sources, we have to extract the Galactic diffuse background: an extension of the method to background separation is then proposed. In contrary, to study the Milky Way diffuse background, we remove point sources with a binary mask. The gaps have to be interpolated: an extension to inpainting is then proposed. In Helio- and asteroseismology, it is important to have continuous, uninterrupted, data sets. However, seismic observations usually contain gaps and we need to take them into account. In particular, if the gaps are not randomly distributed, they will produce a peak and a series of harmonics in the periodogram that will destroy the stellar information. An interpolation of the data can be good solution for this problem. In this paper we have studied an interpolation method based on the so-called 'inpainting' algorithms. To check the algorithm, we used both VIRGO and CoRoT satellite data to which we applied a realistic artificial window of a real CoRoT observing run to introduce gaps. Next we compared the results with the original, non-windowed data. Therefore, we were able to optimize the algorithm by minimizing the difference between the power spectrum density of the data with gaps and the complete time series. In general, we find that the power spectrum of the inpainted time series is very similar to the original, unperturbed one. The first published Fermi large area telescope (Fermi-LAT) measurement of the isotropic diffuse gamma-ray emission is in good agreement with a single power law, and is not showing any signature of a dominant contribution from dark matter sources in the energy range from 20 to 100 GeV. We use the absolute size and spectral shape of this measured flux to derive cross section limits on three types of generic dark matter candidates: annihilating into quarks, charged leptons and monochromatic photons. Predicted gamma-ray fluxes from annihilating dark matter are strongly affected by the underlying distribution of dark matter, and by using different available results of matter structure formation we assess these uncertainties. We also quantify how the dark matter constraints depend on the assumed conventional backgrounds and on the Universe's transparency to high-energy gamma-rays. In reasonable background and dark matter structure scenarios (but not in all scenarios we consider) it is possible to exclude models proposed to explain the excess of electrons and positrons measured by the Fermi-LAT and PAMELA experiments. Derived limits also start to probe cross sections expected from thermally produced relics (e.g. in minimal supersymmetry models) annihilating predominantly into quarks. Dark matter (DM) particle annihilation or decay can produce monochromatic $\gamma$-rays readily distinguishable from astrophysical sources. $\gamma$-ray line limits from 30 GeV to 200 GeV obtained from 11 months of Fermi Large Area Space Telescope data from 20-300 GeV are presented using a selection based on requirements for a $\gamma$-ray line analysis, and integrated over most of the sky. We obtain $\gamma$-ray line flux upper limits in the range $0.6-4.5\times 10^{-9}\mathrm{cm}^{-2}\mathrm{s}^{-1}$, and give corresponding DM annihilation cross-section and decay lifetime limits. This paper reviews statistical methods recently developed to reconstruct and analyze dark matter mass maps from weak lensing observations. The field of weak lensing is motivated by the observations made in the last decades showing that the visible matter represents only about 4-5% of the Universe, the rest being dark. The Universe is now thought to be mostly composed by an invisible, pressureless matter -potentially relic from higher energy theories- called "dark matter" (20-21%) and by an even more mysterious term, described in Einstein equations as a vacuum energy density, called "dark energy" (70%). This "dark" Universe is not well described or even understood, so this point could be the next breakthrough in cosmology. Weak gravitational lensing is believed to be the most promising tool to understand the nature of dark matter and to constrain the cosmological model used to describe the Universe. Gravitational lensing is the process in which light from distant galaxies is bent by the gravity of intervening mass in the Universe as it travels towards us. This bending causes the image of background galaxies to appear slightly distorted and can be used to extract significant results for cosmology. Future weak lensing surveys are already planned in order to cover a large fraction of the sky with large accuracy. However this increased accuracy also places greater demands on the methods used to extract the available information. In this paper, we will first describe the important steps of the weak lensing processing to reconstruct the dark matter distribution from shear estimation. Then we will discuss the problem of statistical estimation in order to set constraints on the cosmological model. The multiscale variance stabilization Transform (MSVST) has recently been proposed for Poisson data denoising. This procedure, which is nonparametric, is based on thresholding wavelet coefficients. We present in this paper an extension of the MSVST to 3D data (in fact 2D-1D data) when the third dimension is not a spatial dimension, but the wavelength, the energy, or the time. We show that the MSVST can be used for detecting and characterizing astrophysical sources of high-energy gamma rays, using realistic simulated observations with the Large Area Telescope (LAT). The LAT was launched in June 2008 on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope mission. The MSVST algorithm is very fast relative to traditional likelihood model fitting, and permits efficient detection across the time dimension and immediate estimation of spectral properties. Astrophysical sources of gamma rays, especially active galaxies, are typically quite variable, and our current work may lead to a reliable method to quickly characterize the flaring properties of newly-detected sources., Comment: Accepted. Weak gravitational lensing provides a unique method to map directly the dark matter in the Universe. The majority of lensing analyses uses the two-point statistics of the cosmic shear field to constrain the cosmological model yielding degeneracies, such as that between sigma_8 and Omega_M respectively the r.m.s. of the mass fluctuations at a scale of 8 Mpc/h and the matter density parameter both at z = 0. However, the two-point statistics only measure the Gaussian properties of the field and the weak lensing field is non-Gaussian. It has been shown that the estimation of non-Gaussian statistics on weak lensing data can improve the constraints on cosmological parameters. In this paper, we systematically compare a wide range of non-Gaussian estimators in order to determine which one provides tighter constraints on the cosmological parameters. These statistical methods include skewness, kurtosis and the Higher Criticism test in several sparse representations such as wavelet and curvelet; as well as the bispectrum, peak counting and a new introduced statistic called Wavelet Peak Counting (WPC). Comparisons based on sparse representations show that the wavelet transform is the most sensitive to non-Gaussian cosmological structures. It appears also that the best statistic for non-Gaussian characterization in weak lensing mass maps is the WPC. Finally, we show that the sigma_8 -Omega_m degeneracy could be even better broken if the WPC estimation is performed on weak lensing mass maps filtered by the wavelet method, MRLens., Comment: Submitted to A&A

We prepare real-life Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) lensing extraction with the forthcoming Planck satellite data, by studying two systematic effects related to the foregrounds contamination: the impact of foreground residuals after a component separation on the lensed CMB map, and of removing a large contaminated region of the sky. We first use the Generalized Morphological Component Analysis (GMCA) method to perform a component separation within a simplified framework which allows a high statistics Monte-Carlo study. For the second systematic, we apply a realistic mask on the temperature maps and then, restore them using a recent inpainting technique on the sphere. We investigate the reconstruction of the CMB lensing from the resultant maps using a quadratic estimator in the flat sky limit and on the full sphere. We find that the foreground residuals from the GMCA method does not alter significantly the lensed signal, nor does the mask corrected with the inpainting method, even in the presence of point sources residuals., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, major update to account for the impact of the point sources emission

The statistics of the temperature anisotropies in the primordial cosmic microwave background radiation field provide a wealth of information for cosmology and for estimating cosmological parameters. An even more acute inference should stem from the study of maps of the polarization state of the CMB radiation. Measuring the extremely weak CMB polarization signal requires very sensitive instruments. The full-sky maps of both temperature and polarization anisotropies of the CMB to be delivered by the upcoming Planck Surveyor satellite experiment are hence being awaited with excitement. Multiscale methods, such as isotropic wavelets, steerable wavelets, or curvelets, have been proposed in the past to analyze the CMB temperature map. In this paper, we contribute to enlarging the set of available transforms for polarized data on the sphere. We describe a set of new multiscale decompositions for polarized data on the sphere, including decimated and undecimated Q-U or E-B wavelet transforms and Q-U or E-B curvelets. We present a morphological study of the two richest superclusters from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (SCL126, the Sloan Great Wall, and SCL9, the Sculptor supercluster). We use Minkowski functionals, shapefinders, and galaxy group information to study the substructure of these superclusters as formed by different populations of galaxies. We compare the properties of grouped and isolated galaxies in the core region and in the outskirts of superclusters. The fourth Minkowski functional $V_3$ and the morphological signature $K_1$- $K_2$ show a crossover from low-density morphology (outskirts of supercluster) to high-density morphology (core of supercluster) at mass fraction $m_f \approx 0.7$. The galaxy content and the morphology of the galaxy populations in supercluster cores and outskirts is different. The core regions contain a larger fraction of early type, red galaxies, and richer groups than the outskirts of superclusters. In the core and outskirt regions the fine structure of the two prominent superclusters as delineated by galaxies from different populations also differs. Our results suggest that both local (group/cluster) and global (supercluster) environments are important in forming galaxy morphologies and colors (and determining the star formation activity). The Planck satellite will map the full sky at nine frequencies from 30 to 857 GHz. The CMB intensity and polarization that are its prime targets are contaminated by foreground emission. The goal of this paper is to compare proposed methods for separating CMB from foregrounds based on their different spectral and spatial characteristics, and to separate the foregrounds into components of different physical origin. A component separation challenge has been organized, based on a set of realistically complex simulations of sky emission. Several methods including those based on internal template subtraction, maximum entropy method, parametric method, spatial and harmonic cross correlation methods, and independent component analysis have been tested. Different methods proved to be effective in cleaning the CMB maps from foreground contamination, in reconstructing maps of diffuse Galactic emissions, and in detecting point sources and thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich signals. The power spectrum of the residuals is, on the largest scales, four orders of magnitude lower than that of the input Galaxy power spectrum at the foreground minimum. The CMB power spectrum was accurately recovered up to the sixth acoustic peak. The point source detection limit reaches 100 mJy, and about 2300 clusters are detected via the thermal SZ effect on two thirds of the sky. We have found that no single method performs best for all scientific objectives. We foresee that the final component separation pipeline for Planck will involve a combination of methods and iterations between processing steps targeted at different objectives such as diffuse component separation, spectral estimation and compact source extraction., Comment: Matches version accepted by A&A. With increasingly large data sets, weak lensing measurements are able to measure cosmological parameters with ever greater precision. However this increased accuracy also places greater demands on the statistical tools used to extract the available information. To date, the majority of lensing analyses use the two point-statistics of the cosmic shear field. These can either be studied directly using the two-point correlation function, or in Fourier space, using the power spectrum. But analyzing weak lensing data inevitably involves the masking out of regions or example to remove bright stars from the field. Masking out the stars is common practice but the gaps in the data need proper handling. In this paper, we show how an inpainting technique allows us to properly fill in these gaps with only $N \log N$ operations, leading to a new image from which we can compute straight forwardly and with a very good accuracy both the pow er spectrum and the bispectrum. We propose then a new method to compute the bispectrum with a polar FFT algorithm, which has the main advantage of avoiding any interpolation in the Fourier domain. Finally we propose a new method for dark matter mass map reconstruction from shear observations which integrates this new inpainting concept. The statistical analysis of the soon to come Planck satellite CMB data will help set tighter bounds on major cosmological parameters. On the way, a number of practical difficulties need to be tackled, notably that several other astrophysical sources emit radiation in the frequency range of CMB observations. Some level of residual contributions, most significantly in the galactic region and at the locations of strong radio point sources will unavoidably contaminate the estimated spherical CMB map. Masking out these regions is common practice but the gaps in the data need proper handling. In order to restore the stationarity of a partly incomplete CMB map and thus lower the impact of the gaps on non-local statistical tests, we developed an inpainting algorithm on the sphere based on a sparse representation of the data, to fill in and interpolate across the masked regions., Comment: Accepted for publication in Statistical Methodology

Recent advances in signal processing have focused on the use of sparse representations in various applications. A new field of interest based on sparsity has recently emerged: compressed sensing. This theory is a new sampling framework that provides an alternative to the well-known Shannon sampling theory. In this paper we investigate how compressed sensing (CS) can provide new insights into astronomical data compression and more generally how it paves the way for new conceptions in astronomical remote sensing. We first give a brief overview of the compressed sensing theory which provides very simple coding process with low computational cost, thus favoring its use for real-time applications often found on board space mission. We introduce a practical and effective recovery algorithm for decoding compressed data. In astronomy, physical prior information is often crucial for devising effective signal processing methods. We particularly point out that a CS-based compression scheme is flexible enough to account for such information. In this context, compressed sensing is a new framework in which data acquisition and data processing are merged. We show also that CS provides a new fantastic way to handle multiple observations of the same field view, allowing us to recover information at very low signal-to-noise ratio, which is impossible with standard compression methods. In the last decade, the study of cosmic microwave background (CMB) data has become one of the most powerful tools to study and understand the Universe. More precisely, measuring the CMB power spectrum leads to the estimation of most cosmological parameters. Nevertheless, accessing such precious physical information requires extracting several different astrophysical components from the data. Recovering those astrophysical sources (CMB, Sunyaev-Zel'dovich clusters, galactic dust) thus amounts to a component separation problem which has already led to an intense activity in the field of CMB studies. In this paper, we introduce a new sparsity-based component separation method coined Generalized Morphological Component Analysis (GMCA). The GMCA approach is formulated in a Bayesian maximum a posteriori (MAP) framework. Following the presentation of the XMM-LSS X-ray source detection package by Pacaud et al., we provide the source lists for the first 5.5 surveyed square degrees. The catalogues pertain to the [0.5-2] and [2-10] keV bands and contain in total 3385 point-like or extended sources above a detection likelihood of 15 in either band. The agreement with deep logN-logS is excellent. The main parameters considered are position, countrate, source extent with associated likelihood values. A set of additional quantities such as astrometric corrections and fluxes are further calculated while errors on the position and countrate are deduced from simulations. We describe the construction of the band-merged catalogue allowing rapid sub-sample selection and easy cross-correlation with external multi-wavelength catalogues. A small optical CFHTLS multi-band subset of objects is associated wich each source along with an X-ray/optical overlay. We make the full X-ray images available in FITS format. We present a catalog of 34 diffuse features identified in X-ray images of the Galactic center taken with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Several of the features have been discussed in the literature previously, including 7 that are associated with a complex of molecular clouds that exhibits fluorescent line emission, 4 that are superimposed on the supernova remnant Sgr A East, 2 that are coincident with radio features that are thought to be the shell of another supernova remnant, and one that is thought to be a pulsar wind nebula only a few arcseconds in projection from Sgr A*. However, this leaves 20 features that have not been reported previously. Based on the weakness of iron emission in their spectra, we propose that most of them are non-thermal. One long, narrow feature points toward Sgr A*, and so we propose that this feature is a jet of synchrotron-emitting particles ejected from the supermassive black hole. For the others, we show that their sizes (0.1-2 pc in length for D=8 kpc), X-ray luminosities (between 10^32 and 10^34 erg/s, 2-8 keV), and spectra (power laws with Gamma=1-3) are consistent with those of pulsar wind nebulae. Based on the star formation rate at the Galactic center, we expect that ~20 pulsars have formed in the last 300 kyr, and could be producing pulsar wind nebulae. Only one of the 19 candidate pulsar wind nebulae is securely detected in an archival radio image of the Galactic center; the remainder have upper limits corresponding to L_R

We study the morphology of galaxy populations of the richest superclusters from the catalogue of superclusters of galaxies in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey using the luminosity density distribution and Minkowski functional V3. We compare the properties of grouped and isolated galaxies in regions of different density in superclusters. We find that in high-density cores of rich superclusters there is an excess of early type, passive galaxies, among galaxies in groups and clusters, as well as among those which do not belong to groups, while in lower density outer regions there are more blue, star-forming galaxies both in groups and among those galaxies which do not belong to groups. This also shows that the galaxy content of groups depends on the environment where the groups reside in. The density distributions and the behaviour of the Minkowski functional V3 for different superclusters show that substructures in superclusters as traced by different populations of galaxies are very different. Our results show that both local (group/cluster) and global (supercluster) environments are important in forming galaxy morphologies and star formation activity. The presence of a high density core with X-ray clusters and a relatively small fraction of star-forming galaxies in the supercluster SCL126 may be an indication that this supercluster has started its evolution earlier than the supercluster SCL9., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics

We study the morphology of the richest superclusters from the catalogues of superclusters of galaxies in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey and compare the morphology of real superclusters with model superclusters in the Millennium Simulation. We use Minkowski functionals and shapefinders to quantify the morphology of superclusters: their sizes, shapes, and clumpiness. We generate empirical models of simple geometry to understand which morphologies correspond to the supercluster shapefinders. We show that rich superclusters have elongated, filamentary shapes with high-density clumps in their core regions. The clumpiness of superclusters is determined using the fourth Minkowski functional $V_3$. In the $K_1$-$K_2$ shapefinder plane the morphology of superclusters is described by a curve which is characteristic to multi-branching filaments. We also find that the differences between the fourth Minkowski functional $V_3$ for the bright and faint galaxies in observed superclusters are larger than in simulated superclusters., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics

We study the relationship between the local environment of galaxies and their star formation rate (SFR) in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey, GOODS, at z~1, from ultradeep imaging at 24 microns with the MIPS camera onboard Spitzer. We show that the star formation-density relation observed locally was reversed at z~1: the average SFR of an individual galaxy increased with local galaxy density when the universe was less than half its present age. Hierarchical galaxy formation models (simulated lightcones from the Millennium model) predicted such a reversal to occur only at only at earlier epochs (z>2) and at a lower level. We present a remarkable structure at z~1.016, containing X-ray traced galaxy concentrations, which will eventually merge into a Virgo-like cluster. This structure illustrates how the individual SFR of galaxies increases with density at the ~1-2 Mpc scale. The SFR of z~1 galaxies is found to correlate with stellar mass suggesting that mass plays a role in the observed star formation-density trend. However the specific SFR (=SFR/M*) decreases with stellar mass while it increases with galaxy density, which implies that the environment does directly affect the star formation activity of galaxies. Major mergers do not appear to be the unique or even major cause for this effect since nearly half (46%) of the luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) at z~1 present the HST-ACS morphology of spirals, while only a third present a clear signature of major mergers. The remaining galaxies are divided into compact (9%) and irregular (14%) galaxies. Moreover, the specific SFR of major mergers is only marginally stronger than that of spirals. We present the X-ray pipeline developed for the purpose of the cluster search in the XMM-LSS survey. It is based on a two-stage procedure via a dedicated handling of the Poisson nature of the signal: (1) source detection on multi-resolution wavelet filtered images; (2) source analysis by means of a maximum likelihood fit to the photon images. The source detection efficiency and characterisation are studied through extensive Monte-Carlo simulations. This led us to define two samples of extended sources: the C1 class that is uncontaminated, and the less restrictive C2 class that allows for 50% contamination. The resulting predicted selection function is presented and the comparison to the current XMM-LSS confirmed cluster sample shows very good agreement. We arrive at average predicted source densities of about 7 C1 and 12 C2 per deg2, which is higher than any available wide field X-ray survey. We finally notice a substantial deviation of the predicted redshift distribution for our samples from the one obtained using the usual assumption of a flux limited sample., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, MNRAS accepted. Context: The detection and identification of oscillation modes (in terms of their $\ell$, $m$ and successive $n$) is a great challenge for present and future asteroseismic space missions. The "peak tagging" is an important step in the analysis of these data to provide estimations of stellar oscillation mode parameters, i.e., frequencies, rotation rates, and further studies on the stellar structure. Aims: To increase the signal-to-noise ratio of the asteroseismic spectra computed from time series representative of MOST and CoRoT observations (30- and 150-day observations). Methods: We apply the curvelet transform -- a recent image processing technique which looks for curved patterns -- to echelle diagrams built using asteroseismic power spectra. In this diagram the eigenfrequencies appear as smooth continuous ridges. To test the method we use Monte Carlo simulations of several sun-like stars with different combinations of rotation rates, rotation-axis inclination and signal-to-noise ratios. Results: The filtered diagrams enhance the contrast between the ridges of the modes and the background allowing a better tagging of the modes and a better extraction of some stellar parameters. Monte Carlo simulations have also shown that the region where modes can be detected is enlarged at lower and higher frequencies compared to the raw spectra. We have developed a method based on wavelets to obtain the true underlying smooth density from a point distribution. The goal has been to reconstruct the density field in an optimal way ensuring that the morphology of the reconstructed field reflects the true underlying morphology of the point field which, as the galaxy distribution, has a genuinely multiscale structure, with near-singular behavior on sheets, filaments and hotspots. If the discrete distributions are smoothed using Gaussian filters, the morphological properties tend to be closer to those expected for a Gaussian field. Currently, it appears that the best method for non-Gaussianity detection in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) consists in calculating the kurtosis of the wavelet coefficients. We know that wavelet-kurtosis outperforms other methods such as the bispectrum, the genus, ridgelet-kurtosis and curvelet-kurtosis on an empirical basis, but relatively few studies have compared other transform-based statistics, such as extreme values, or more recent tools such as Higher Criticism (HC), or proposed `best possible' choices for such statistics. In this paper we consider two models for transform-domain coefficients: (a) a power-law model, which seems suited to the wavelet coefficients of simulated cosmic strings; and (b) a sparse mixture model, which seems suitable for the curvelet coefficients of filamentary structure. For model (a), if power-law behavior holds with finite 8-th moment, excess kurtosis is an asymptotically optimal detector, but if the 8-th moment is not finite, a test based on extreme values is asymptotically optimal. For model (b), if the transform coefficients are very sparse, a recent test, Higher Criticism, is an optimal detector, but if they are dense, kurtosis is an optimal detector. Empirical wavelet coefficients of simulated cosmic strings have power-law character, infinite 8-th moment, while curvelet coefficients of the simulated cosmic strings are not very sparse. It is a recurrent issue in astronomical data analysis that observations are unevenly sampled or incomplete maps with missing patches or intentionaly masked parts. In addition, many astrophysical emissions are non stationary processes over the sky. Hence spectral estimation using standard Fourier transforms is no longer reliable. Spectral matching ICA (SMICA) is a source separation method based on covariance matching in Fourier space which is successfully used for the separation of diffuse astrophysical emissions in Cosmic Microwave Background observations. We show here that wavelets, which are standard tools in processing non stationary data, can profitably be used to extend SMICA. Among possible applications, it is shown that gaps in data are dealt with more conveniently and with better results using this extension, wSMICA, in place of the original SMICA. The performances of these two methods are compared on simulated CMB data sets, demonstrating the advantageous use of wavelets.

Galaxies are arranged in interconnected walls and filaments forming a cosmic web encompassing huge, nearly empty, regions between the structures. Many statistical methods have been proposed in the past in order to describe the galaxy distribution and discriminate the different cosmological models. We present in this paper results relative to the use of new statistical tools using the 3D isotropic undecimated wavelet transform, the 3D ridgelet transform and the 3D beamlet transform. We show that such multiscale methods produce a new way to measure in a coherent and statistically reliable way the degree of clustering, filamentarity, sheetedness, and voidedness of a dataset, Comment: 26 pages, 20 figures. Recent Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) observations indicate that the temperature anisotropies arise from quantum fluctuations in the inflationary scenario. In the simplest inflationary models, the distribution of CMB temperature fluctuations should be Gaussian. However, non-Gaussian signatures can be present. They might have different origins and thus different statistical and morphological characteristics. In this context and motivated by recent and future CMB experiments, we search for, and discriminate between, different non-Gaussian signatures. We analyse simulated maps of three cosmological sources of temperature anisotropies: Gaussian distributed CMB anisotropies from inflation, temperature fluctuations from cosmic strings and anisotropies due to the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect both showing a non-Gaussian character. We use different multi-scale methods, namely, wavelet, ridgelet and curvelet transforms. The sensitivity and the discriminating power of the methods is evaluated using simulated data sets. We find that the bi-orthogonal wavelet transform is the most powerful for the detection of non-Gaussian signatures and that the curvelet and ridgelet transforms characterise quite precisely and exclusively the cosmic strings. They allow us thus to detect them in a mixture of CMB + SZ + cosmic strings. We show that not one method only should be applied to understand non-Gaussianity but rather a set of different robust and complementary methods should be used., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. We have designed a medium deep large area X-ray survey with XMM - the XMM Large Scale Structure survey, XMM-LSS - with the scope of extending the cosmological tests attempted using ROSAT cluster samples to two redshift bins between 0

We present the results of the five mid-IR 15 microns (12-18 microns LW3 band) ISOCAM Guaranteed Time Extragalactic Surveys performed in the regions of the Lockman Hole and Marano Field. The roughly 1000 sources detected, 600 of which have a flux above the 80 % completeness limit, guarantee a very high statistical significance for the integral and differential source counts from 0.1 mJy up to 5 mJy. By adding the ISOCAM surveys of the HDF-North and South (plus flanking fields) and the lensing cluster A2390 at low fluxes and IRAS at high fluxes, we cover four decades in flux from 50 microJy to 0.3 Jy. The slope of the differential counts is very steep (alpha =-3.0) in the flux range 0.4-4 mJy, hence much above the Euclidean expectation of alpha =-2.5. When compared with no-evolution models based on IRAS, our counts show a factor of 10 excess at 400 microJy, and a fast convergence, with alpha =-1.6 at lower fluxes., Comment: Astronomy and Astrophysics Letter (in press) (4 pages, 2 figures)

ISOCAM extragalactic mid-infrared deep surveys have detected a population of strong IR emitters ten times more numerous than expected if there were no evolution from z<0.2 (IRAS) up to the maximum redshift of these galaxies (z=1.5). The mid-IR cosmic background produced by these galaxies (2.35+/-0.8 nW m^-2 sr^-1, at 15 microns above 50 microJy) is larger than 30 per cent of the energy radiated in the I band by the optical galaxies detected in the HDF, which are two orders of magnitude more numerous. This fraction is much higher than in the local universe (z<0.2) as probed by IRAS, where all integrated IR emission from 8 to 1000 microns makes 30 per cent of the optical starlight. Even assuming a conservative SED, they produce a major contribution to the 140 mu m DIRBE background measured by Hauser et al. (1998, 25.1+/-7 nW m^-2 sr^-1) and Lagache et al. (1999, 15.3+/-9.5 nW m^ -2 sr^-1). This is both a confirmation of the strong IR cosmic background that was first detected by Puget et al. (1996) and the first identification of the galaxies responsible for a large fraction of this background at 140 microns. We find that these bright (several 10^11 Lsol) and massive (= 1.5x10^11 Msol) IR galaxies have a typical redshift of z=0.7 and optical colors similar to field galaxies. The fraction of galaxies with morphological signs of interactions is larger at higher redshift. This is consistent with the nature of local luminous IR galaxies found by IRAS, which often exhibit evidence of galaxy interaction or merging and indicates that interactions should play a crucial role in the evolution of galaxies as expected from bottom-up scenarios., Comment: To appear in 'The Universe as seen by ISO', eds. We have developed a new ISOCAM data reduction technique based on wavelet analysis, especially designed for the detection of faint sources in mid-infrared surveys. This method, the Pattern REcognition Technique for Isocam data (PRETI) has been used to reduce the observations of the Hubble Deep Field (HDF) and flanking fields with ISOCAM at 6.75 (LW2) and 15 microns (LW3). Simulations of ISOCAM data allow us to test the photometric accuracy and completeness of the reduction. We detect 49 objects in the ISO-HDF at high confidence level, 42 in the LW3 filter, 3 in the LW2 filter, and 4 in both filters. An additional, less secure, list of 100 sources is presented, of which 89 are detected at 15 microns only, 7 at 6.75 microns only and 4 in both filters. Number counts derived from our results show an excess by a factor of 10 with respect to the prediction of a no evolution model (Franceschini 1998) in the LW3 band. On the contrary, the number of sources in the LW2 band is compatible with the prediction of such a model, but with greater uncertainties, given the small number of detections., Comment: 26 pages, 22 figures, aa.cls style, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Before having exhausted the helium in its tank on April 8, 1998, the Infrared Space Observatory had time to perform several complementary surveys at various depths and areas within selected regions of the sky. We present the results of some of the surveys done with the mid-infrared camera, ISOCAM, on-board ISO, and more specifically those surveys which were performed using the broad-band filter LW3 (12-18 microns). We show that mid-infrared allows to discriminate starburst and post-starburst galaxies among galaxies which present similar optical-UV morphological and colour signatures. We report on the mid-IR imaging at 7 and 10 microns of the galaxy cluster Abell 370, obtained with the ISOCAM instrument onboard ESA's Infrared Space Observatory (ISO), as part of an ongoing program to image gravitational arcs and arclets in distant clusters. We have recorded initial detections of the A0 giant arc in both bandpasses, the two central dominant galaxies at 7 microns, and several other cluster members and field galaxies.
