153. How firm communication affects the impact of layoff announcements on brand strength over time

Abstract

Firms usually undertake layoffs to improve financial performance. However, layoffs often have negative effects on various stakeholders, including consumers. In this paper, we examine the magnitude and duration of the potential negative effect of layoff announcements on brand strength. We also examine how a firm's communication accompanying a layoff can potentially counteract the observed negative effect of layoff announcements on brand strength. We compare how advertising communication intensity, social media communication (i.e., brand-initiated tweets), public relation (PR) communication, and communication of CSR initiatives moderate the main effect of layoff announcements on brand strength. Using an error correction model and drawing on 366 announcements of layoff events in Germany, this study identifies the magnitude and duration of the main effect. An examination of five years of weekly consumer brand perception data across multiple industries and domestic and foreign firms shows that advertising communication intensity and social media communication amplify the negative impact of layoff announcements on brand strength. Conversely, PR communication and communication of CSR initiatives help mitigate the negative effect. These findings provide guidance on the best way for firms to design firm communication in the context of layoff announcements.

Dit rapport beschrijft de complexe relatie tussen digitalisering en duurzaamheid. Het doel van dit onderzoek is om inzicht te verschaffen in de impact van digitalisering op milieuvraagstukken en duurzame ontwikkeling, terwijl tegelijkertijd beleidsmaatregelen worden geïdentificeerd die kunnen bijdragen aan emissiereductie en energiebesparing. Digitalisering manifesteert zich als een tweesnijdend zwaard in de context van klimaatdoelstellingen. Het belooft efficiëntere processen en draagt potentieel bij aan duurzaamheid, maar brengt ook een stijging van broeikasgasemissies met zich mee, vooral gezien de snelgroeiende digitale sector. In antwoord op de groeiende vraag naar inzicht heeft het Ministerie van Economische Zaken en Klimaat (EZK) SEO Economisch Onderzoek en Dialogic gevraagd om de complexe relatie tussen digitalisering en duurzaamheid te onderzoeken. Dit onderzoek is opgedeeld in twee delen: het eerste deel richt zich op de uitstoot van de digitale sector, terwijl het tweede deel zich concentreert op de potentie van digitalisering om bij te dragen aan emissiereductie en de stappen die de overheid kan nemen. Dit rapport richt zich met name op het tweede deel en beantwoordt specifieke onderzoeksvragen met betrekking tot de rol van digitale technologieën in emissiereductie en energiebesparing in sectoren buiten de digitale sector in Nederland. Daarnaast worden prioritaire acties geïdentificeerd die het ministerie van EZK kan ondernemen om deze bijdrage te faciliteren.

Abstract

Machine Learning (ML) has shown significant potential in various applications; however, its adoption in privacy-critical domains has been limited due to concerns about data privacy. A promising solution to this issue is Federated Machine Learning (FedML), a model-to-data approach that prioritizes data privacy. By enabling ML algorithms to be applied directly to distributed data sources without sharing raw data, FedML offers enhanced privacy protections, making it suitable for privacy-critical environments. Despite its theoretical benefits, FedML has not seen widespread practical implementation. This study aims to explore the current state of applied FedML and identify the challenges hindering its practical adoption. Through a comprehensive systematic literature review, we assess 74 relevant papers to analyze the real-world applicability of FedML. Our analysis focuses on the characteristics and emerging trends of FedML implementations, as well as the motivational drivers and application domains. We also discuss the encountered challenges in integrating FedML into real-life settings. Abstract

Biocatalysis in flow reactor systems is of increasing importance for the transformation of the chemical industry. However, the necessary immobilization of biocatalysts remains a challenge. We here demonstrate that biogenic magnetic nanoparticles, so-called magnetosomes, represent an attractive alternative for the development of nanoscale particle formulations to enable high and stable conversion rates in biocatalytic flow processes. In addition to their intriguing material characteristics, such as high crystallinity, stable magnetic moments, and narrow particle size distribution, magnetosomes offer the unbeatable advantage over chemically synthesized nanoparticles that foreign protein “cargo” can be immobilized on the enveloping membrane via genetic engineering and thus, stably presented on the particle surface. To exploit these advantages, we develop a modular connector system in which abundant magnetosome membrane anchors are genetically fused with SpyCatcher coupling groups, allowing efficient covalent coupling with complementary SpyTag-functionalized proteins. The versatility of this approach is demonstrated by immobilizing a dimeric phenolic acid decarboxylase to SpyCatcher magnetosomes. The functionalized magnetosomes outperform similarly functionalized commercial particles by exhibiting stable substrate conversion during a 60 h period, with an average space–time yield of 49.2 mmol L–1 h–1. Overall, our results demonstrate that SpyCatcher magnetosomes significantly expand the genetic toolbox for particle surface functionalization and increase their application potential as nano-biocatalysts.

Abstract

In marine ecosystems, maximum sustainable yield considerations are affected by any substantial changes that occur in the top and bottom compartments of the food-web. This study explores how the southern North Sea's fisheries may need to adjust their fishing efforts to maintain optimum yields of sole, plaice, cod and brown shrimps under increased marine mammal populations and a reduced primary productivity. We constructed plausible scenarios of ongoing food-web changes using the results of Bayesian age-structured population models to estimate carrying capacities of harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) and grey seals (Halichoerus grypus). Losses in primary productivity were predicted by lower trophic level ecosystem models. These scenarios were implemented in a food-web model of the southern North Sea. For each scenario, we sought mixed-fleet fishing efforts that would deliver maximum yields of sole, plaice, cod and brown shrimp combined. We also did so for a baseline run with unaltered mammal and primary production, and compared the differences in optimal fishing strategies, predicted yields, and states of the stocks between the scenarios. We found stocks and yields to be far more sensitive to changes in primary productivity than to increased marine mammal predation. The latter predominantly impacted cod, and even benefitted brown shrimps compared to the baseline run. Under 30% reduced primary productivity, fishing efforts had to be reduced by 50% to still provide maximum yields, whereas the marine mammal scenario induced no need to adjust the fishing regime. This draws attention to the potential gains of incorporating bottom-up processes into long-term management considerations, while marine mammal predation may be less of a concern, in particular for flatfish fisheries in the North Sea, and may even benefit shrimp trawlers because of reduced predation on shrimp from fish predators.

Abstract

National guarantees of criminal law, such as the requirement of mitigation under section 2(3) of the Criminal Code, cannot escape the influence of Union law. This is all the more true since the anchoring of European criminal law guarantees in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. The thesis deals in depth with the question of the scope of application of the European mitigation requirement, especially in distinction to the national criminal law guarantee. The work is also devoted to the content and scope of the respective criminal law guarantee. The results of the discussion on the already established national principle of criminal law provide valuable clues for the interpretation of the still young European principle.

Abstract

Local measurements of heat flux in Quantum Hall devices can deviate from the expected equilibrium heat flux due to interactions. We present a model of a simple mesoscopic device consisting of an Ohmic reservoir contacted by chiral edge states. In contrast to the well studied heat Coulomb blockade (HCB) effect, we report the opposite phenomenon, an enhancement of the heat flux carried by an edge state in the HCB regime due to an additional contribution of the collective charge mode via the fluctuating potential of the Ohmic contact. We discuss the thermometry of these correlared states and discuss their detectability. The enhancement effect is also reflected in modified correlation functions, which influences the electrical and thermal linear response coefficients in a tunneling probe measurement. On a technical level, we introduce a Langevin formalism that elucidates the role of these extra fluctuations in electrical and thermal transport, both in uniformly heated and Joule heated devices and argue that our approach has advantages in the latter scenario compared to the standard $P (E)$ theory. Abstract

This paper studies how litigation and settlement behavior is affected by agents motivated by spiteful preferences under the American and the English fee-shifting rule. We conduct an experiment and find that litigation expenditures and settlement requests are higher for more spiteful participants. The relative increase in litigation expenditures due to spite is more pronounced under the American fee-shifting rule. We further find that the expected payoff for more spiteful societies is lower than for less spiteful societies. This effect is particularly pronounced for low-merit cases under the English rule compared to a constant cost under the American rule.
