The excited states of Ho148 and Ho149 isotopes are studied using γ-ray and electron spectroscopy in off-beam and in-beam modes following Sn112,114(Ar40,xnyp) reactions. Experiments include measurements of single γ-rays and conversion electron spectra as well as γ-γ, electron-γ, γ−t, and γ−γ−t coincidences with the use of the OSIRIS-II 12-HPGe array and conversion electron spectrometer. Based on the present results, the level schemes of Ho148 and Ho149 are revised and significantly extended, up to about 4 and 5 MeV of excitation energy, respectively. Spin and parity of 5− are assigned to the 9.59-s isomer in Ho148 based on conversion electron results. Previously unobserved γ rays feeding the 10+ isomer in Ho148 and the 27/2− isomer in Ho149 nuclei are proposed. Shell-model calculations are performed. Possible core-excited states in Ho149 are discussed.

Expérience GANIL; The development of deformation and shape coexistence in the vicinity of doubly-magic 48Ca, related to the weakening of the N=28 shell closure, was addressed in a low-energy Coulomb excitation experiment using a radioactive 44Ar beam from the SPIRAL facility at GANIL. The 2+1 and 22+ states in 44Ar were excited on 208Pb and 109Ag targets at two different beam energies. B(E2) values between all observed states and the spectroscopic quadrupole moment of the 2+1 state were extracted from the differential Coulomb excitation cross sections, indicating prolate shape of the 44Ar nucleus, and giving evidence for an onset of deformation already two protons and two neutrons away from doubly-magic 48Ca. New Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov based configuration mixing calculations have been performed with the Gogny D1S interaction for 44Ar and neighboring nuclei using two different approaches: the angular-momentum projected generator coordinate method considering axial quadrupole deformations and a five-dimensional approach including the triaxial degree of freedom. The experimental values and new calculations are furthermore compared to the shell model and to relativistic mean field calculations. The new results give insight into the weakening of the N=28 shell closure and the development of deformation in this neutron-rich region of the nuclear chart.

- Abstract
The combined data of two Coulomb excitation experiments has verified the purely electromagnetic population of the Kπ=4+,6+,8-, and 16+ rotational bands in Hf178 via 2≤ν≤14 K-forbidden transitions, quantifying the breakdown of the K-selection rule with increasing spin in the low-K bands. The γ-, 4+, and 6+ bands were extended, and four new states in a rotational band were tentatively assigned to a previously known Kπ=0+ band. The quasiparticle structure of the 6+ (t12=77 ns) and 8- (t12=4 s) isomer bands were evaluated, showing that the gyromagnetic ratios of the 6+ isomer band are consistent with a pure π72+[404],π52+[402] structure. The 8- isomer band at 1147 keV and the second 8- band at 1479 keV, thought to be predominantly ν72-[514],ν92+[624] and π92-[514],π72+[404], respectively, are mixed to a degree approaching the strong-mixing limit. Based on measured Kπ=16+ E2 Kπ=0+ matrix elements, it was shown that heavy-ion bombardment could depopulate the 16+ isomer at the ~1% level, although no states were found that would mediate photodeexcitation of the isomer via low-energy x-ray absorption.

Coulomb activation of the four quasiparticle Kπ=16+ Hf178 isomer (t1/2=31y) has led to the measurement of a set of Eλ matrix elements coupling the isomer band to the ground band. The present data combined with earlier Hf178 Coulomb excitation data have probed the K components in the wave functions and revealed the onset and saturation of K mixing in low-K bands, whereas the mixing is negligible in the high-K bands. The implications can be applied to other quadrupole-deformed nuclei.

The Coulomb excitation experiment to study electromagnetic structure of low-lying states in Ca-42 with a focus on a possible superdeformation in this nucleus was performed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro in Italy. Preliminary values of the determined quadrupole deformation parameters for both the ground state band and the presumed superdeformed band are presented.

- Abstract
Post-accelerated isomerically purified radioactive beams, available at the CERN On-Line Isotope Mass Separator facility using the resonant ionization laser technique, have been used to study the Coulomb excitation of the I-pi = 3(-) state in Cu-70 (Z = 29, N = 41). While first results using a I-pi = 6(-) beam were reported previously, the present complementary experiment allows us to complete the study of the multiplet of states (3(-), 4(-), 5(-), 6(-)) arising from the pi 2p(3)/(2)nu 1g(9/2) configuration. Besides the known gamma-ray transition deexciting the 4(-) state, a ground-state. ray of 511(3) keV was observed for the first time and was unambiguously associated with the 5(-) state deexcitation. This observation fixes the energy, spin, and parity of this state, completing the low-energy level scheme of Cu-70. B(E2) values for all possible E2 transitions within the multiplet were determined. A comparison with large-scale shell model calculations using different interactions and valence spaces shows the importance of proton excitation across the Z = 28 shell gap and the role of the 2d(5/2) neutron orbital.

The generalized Bohr Hamiltonian is applied to a description of low-lying collective excitations in even-even isotopes of Te, Xe, Ba, Ce, Nd and Sm. The collective potential and inertial functions are determined by means of the Strutinsky method and the cranking model, respectively. A shell-dependent parametrization of the Nilsson potential is used. An approximate particle-number projection is performed in treatment of pairing correlations. The effect of coupling with the pairing vibrations is taken into account approximately when determining the inertial functions. 104 Pd were investigated by means of Coulomb excitation using the32 S beam. The delayed coincidence method with special reference to the in-beam experiments is considered as a means of identification and the lifetime measurements of isomeric states, as well as, the method of the investigation of radiations populating isomeric states. Isomers are detected and correlated with prompt events if they occur within a certain time of the prompt event. The
16 O +208 Pb reaction was investigated using the OSIRIS-II and the EAGLE arrays at HIL-UW. About eighty nuclei were identified as fission fragments among the reaction products.
