An unusual and unique conformation of a paddle wheel type binuclear copper(II) complex containing acetate and acetamido ligands, {Cu2(μ2-O2CCH3)4}(OCNH2CH3) (1), was obtained by solvothermal synthesis. The structural characterization of this compound shows that the apical (acetamido) ligands are disposed at a 62° dihedral angle, generating a special conformation as a consequence of the synthetic method used. This conformation has not been reported in other paddle wheel copper(II) tetraacetate compounds. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of powder samples of (1) were obtained at 9.5 and 33.8 GHz, while single crystal spectra were obtained at 33.8 GHz with a B0 applied in three orthogonal planes. The fit of the single crystal experimental data allowed gave g∥ = 2.345 ± 0.003, and g⊥ = 2.057 ± 0.005. The angular variation of the EPR line allows evaluation of the fine structure of (1), giving D = -0.337 ± 0.002 cm(-1) and E = -0.005 ± 0.001 cm(-1). The line width angular dependence, used together with the Anderson model and Kubo-Tomita theory, permitted the interdimer interaction to be evaluated as |J'| = (0.051 ± 0.002) cm(-1). Using the powder spectral temperature dependence it was possible to evaluate the intradinuclear exchange coupling constan J0 as -101 ± 2 cm(-1), which is considerably lower than that reported for other analogous copper(II) tetraacetate paddle wheel compounds (Cu(II)-PW), showing the remarkable effect of the conformation of the terminal ligands on the magnetic interaction.

A theoretical study of the magnetic properties, using density functional theory, of a family of trinuclear μ3-OH copper(II) complexes reported in the literature is presented. The reported X-ray crystal structures of [Cu3(μ3-OH)(aat)3(H2O)3](NO3)2 · H2O (HUKDUM), where aat: 3-acetylamine-1,2,4-triazole; [Cu3(μ3-OH)(aaat)3(H2SO4)(HSO4)(H2O)] (HUKDOG), where aaat: 3-acetylamine-5-amine-1,2,4-triazole; [Cu3(μ3-OH)(PhPyCNO)3(tchlphac)2] (HOHQUR), where PhPyCNO: phenyl 2-pyridyl-ketoxime and tchlphac: acid 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic; [Cu3(μ3-OH)(PhPyCNO)3(NO3)2(CH3OH)] (ILEGEM); [Cu3(μ3-OH)(pz)3(Hpz)3(ClO4)2] (QOPJIP), where Hpz = pyrazole; [Cu3(μ3-OH)(pz)3(Hpz)(Me3CCOO)2] ∙ 2Me3CCOOH (DEFSEN) and [Cu3(μ3-OH)(8-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one)3][CuI3] (RITXUO), were used in the calculations. The magnetic exchange constants were calculated using the broken-symmetry approach. The calculated J values are for HUKDUM J1 = -68.6 cm(-1), J2 = -69.9 cm(-1), J3 = -70.4 cm(-1); for HUKDOG, J1 = -73.5 cm(-1), J2 = -58.9 cm(-1), J3 = -62.1 cm(-1); for HOHQUR J1 = -128.3 cm(-1), J2 = -134.1 cm(-1), J3 = -120.4 cm(-1); for ILEGEM J1 = -151.6 cm(-1), J2 = -173.9 cm(-1), J3 = -186.9 cm(-1); for QOPJIP J1 = -118.3 cm(-1), J2 = -106.0 cm(-1), J3 = -120.6 cm(-1); for DEFSEN J1 = -74.9 cm(-1), J2 = -64.0 cm(-1), J3 = -57.7 cm(-1) and for RITXUO J1 = -10.9 cm(-1), J2 = +14.3 cm(-1), J3 = -35.4 cm(-1). The Kahn-Briat model was used to correlate the calculated magnetic properties with the overlap of the magnetic orbitals. Spin density surfaces show that the delocalization mechanism is predominant in all the studied compounds.

The palladium(II) bis-chelate complexes of the type [Pd(TSC(1-5))2] (6-10), with their corresponding ligands 4-phenyl-1-(acetone)-thiosemicarbazone, HTSC(1) (1), 4-phenyl-1-(2'-chloro-benzaldehyde)-thiosemicarbazone, HTSC(2) (2), 4-phenyl-1-(3'-hydroxy-benzaldehyde)-thiosemicarbazone, HTSC(3) (3), 4-phenyl-1-(2'-naphthaldehyde)-thiosemicarbazone, HTSC(4) (4), and 4-phenyl-1-(1'-nitro-2'-naphthaldehyde)-thiosemicarbazone, HTSC(5) (5), were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopic techniques (IR and (1)H- and (13)C-NMR). The molecular structure of HTSC(3), HTSC(4), and [Pd(TSC(1))2] (6) have been determined by single crystal X-ray crystallography. Complex 6 shows a square planar geometry with two deprotonated ligands coordinated to Pd(II) through the azomethine nitrogen and thione sulfur atoms in a cis arrangement. The in vitro cytotoxic activity measurements indicate that the palladium(II) complexes (IC50 = 0.01-9.87 μM) exhibited higher antiproliferative activity than their free ligands (IC50 = 23.48-70.86 and >250 μM) against different types of human tumor cell lines. Among all the studied palladium(II) complexes, the [Pd(TSC(3))2] (8) complex exhibited high antitumor activity on the DU145 prostate carcinoma and K562 chronic myelogenous leukemia cells, with low values of the inhibitory concentration (0.01 and 0.02 μM, resp.).

EPR measurements have been performed on single crystals of [Cu(L-tyrosine)(2)](∞) at 33.8 GHz and at room temperature. The EPR spectra display partially resolved EPR lines for most orientations of the magnetic field in the ab plane, and only one resonance for orientations close to the crystal axes, while only a single line is observed along any direction in the ca and cb crystal planes. This behavior is a result of the selective collapse of the resonances corresponding to the four copper sites in the unit cell produced by the exchange interactions between the copper ions. The magnitudes of the exchange interactions between the copper ions were evaluated from the angular variation of the line width and the collapse of the EPR lines. The value |J(AD)/k(B)|=0.8 K between neighboring copper atoms at 4.942 Å is assigned to a syn-anti equatorial-apical carboxylate bridge with a total bond length of 6.822 Å, while the small value |J(AB)/k(B)|=0.004 K is assigned to a long bridge of 11 atoms with a total bond length of 19.186 Å, that includes one resonance assisted hydrogen bond (RAHB). Structural, magnetic, and powder and single-crystal electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies were performed on [{Cu(bipy)(en)}{Cu(bipy)(H(2)O)}{VO(3)}(4)](n) (bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine, en = ethylenediamine), which is a new copper-vanadium hybrid organic-inorganic compound containing Cu(II) and V(V) centers. The oxovanadium units provide an anionic scaffolding to the structure, where two types of Cu(II) coordination modes, octahedral (Cu1) and square pyramidal (Cu2), contribute to the magnetic properties. The crystal structure contains layers including Cu1 and Cu2 ions, separated by stacked arrangements of 2,2'-bipyridine molecules. Each type of Cu(II) ion in these layers forms parallel spin chains described by exchange coupling parameters J(1) and J(2) for Cu1 and Cu2, respectively (exchange couplings defined as H(ex)(i,j) = -J(ij)S(i)S(j)), which, for necessity, are assumed to be equal to J. These chains are coupled by much weaker Cu1-Cu2 exchange interactions J(3) connecting neighbor Cu1 and Cu2 ions within a layer, through paths acting as rungs of a ladder chain structure. The average coupling J, which is antiferromagnetic (J < 0), according to the susceptibility data, is estimated with similar results with a mean field approximation (J = -1.4 cm(-1)), and with a uniform chain model (J = -1.7 cm(-1)). The EPR spectra of powdered samples and oriented single crystals are shown to be independent of J(1) and J(2), but are dependent on the weak coupling J(3), and the data allow a lower limit to be established: |J(3)| > 0.04 cm(-1). The spectra are also strongly sensitive to extremely weak coupling interactions with average magnitude J(4) between copper atoms in neighboring layers, separated by ∼10 Å, using the stacked 2,2'-bipyridine molecules, which produce a 2D-to-3D quantum phase transition. This is observed in single-crystal samples when the energy levels are changed with the orientation of the magnetic field. From the characteristics of these transitions, we estimate a value of |J(4)| = 0.0034 ± 0.0004 cm(-1) between Cu(II) ions in neighboring layers. This work emphasizes the important possibilities of EPR to evaluate extremely small exchange couplings between metal ions in a solid material, even in the presence of other much larger couplings.

Four mononuclear complexes [Cu(HL(1))Cl]PF(6).CH(3)OH (1), [Cu(HSL(1))Cl]PF(6).0.75H(2)O (2), [Cu(HL(2))Cl]PF(6).CH (3)OH (3), [Cu(HSL(2))Cl]PF(6).1.5CH(3)OH (4), and two polynuclear complexes [Cu (2)(SL(2))(2)](PF(6))(2).2CH(3)OH (5) and {Cu[Cu(SL(2))(Cl)](2)}(PF(6))(2) (6) (HL(1): 2-[(bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-amino)methyl]-4-methylphenol; HSL(1): 2-[(bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amino) methyl]-4-methyl-6-(methyl-thio)phenol; HL(2): 2-[(2-pyridylmethyl)(2'-pyridylethyl)-aminomethyl)]-4-methylphenol; HSL(2): 2-[(2-pyridylmethyl)(2'-pyridylethyl)amino-methyl]-4-methyl-6-(methylthio)phenol were obtained and characterized. The crystal structures of the mononuclear complexes 1-4 show the copper centers in a square-base pyramidal environment with the phenolic oxygen coordinated at the axial position. Dinuclear complex 5 has two copper centers with different geometry and bridged by phenoxo oxygens; one of the copper atoms is square pyramidal while the other can be described with a highly distorted octahedral geometry with a long Cu-S distance (2.867 A). Density functional theory calculations were used to obtain the reported structure of 6, since single crystals suitable for X-ray diffraction were not isolated. Magnetic studies done for 5 and 6 show an antiferromagnetic behavior for 5 (J = -134 cm(-1)) and a ferromagnetic behavior for 6 (J = +11.9 cm(-1)). Redox potentials for the mononuclear complexes were measured by cyclic voltammetry; the values show the effect of the chelating ring size (-213 mV and -142 mV for Cu-HL(1) and Cu-HL(2), respectively) and the presence of the thiomethyl substituent (-213 mV and -184 mV for Cu-HL(1) and Cu-HSL(1), respectively).

A structural and magnetic characterization of a trinuclear chiral Mn(II) formate three-dimensional framework exhibiting a triangular arrangement is presented. Compound Na(3)[Mn(3)(HCOO)(9)] was obtained by solvothermal synthesis and crystallizes in the chiral cubic space group P2(1)3 and is well described by a Delta conformation. The structure displays triangular Mn(3) building blocks, in which the metal centers are bonded by formate ligands in a syn-anti mode (Mn-Mn 5.697(1) A). The coordination sphere of manganese(II) is completed by six oxygen atoms from six formate ligands, resulting in an octahedral geometry. Magnetic susceptibility measurements showed antiferromagnetic interactions at high temperature and a strongly field dependent magnetic behavior below 40 K. At fields higher than 1.0 kOe only the antiferromagnetic interactions can be observed. At applied fields lower than 1.0 kOe magnetic susceptibility becomes irreversible with maxima observed at 22 and 34 K. These maxima suggest a weak ferromagnetic behavior because of spin canting, allowed by the presence of the noncentrosymmetric syn-anti HCOO bridges linking the Mn sites. This non-collinear antiferromagnetism and irreversible behavior can be due to the existence of a high degree of frustration in this unique lattice composed of linked triangular arrangements of interacting magnetic centers.

A new extended metal-organic framework [Cu(H2btec)(bipy)]infinity. (1) (H4btec= 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid; bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine) has been hydrothermally synthesized. Violet crystals are formed in a monoclinic system with a space group C2/c; a = 10.1810(18) A, b = 14.4360(18) A, c = 12.894(3) A, beta = 112.94(3) degrees. In the title compound 1 each Cu(II) centre has a distorted square planar environment, completed by two N atoms from one bipy ligand and two O atoms belonging to two dihydrogen benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarboxylate anions (H2btec2-). The {Cu(bipy)}2+ moieties are bridged by H2btec2- anions to form an infinite one-dimensional coordination polymer with a zig-zag chain structure along the c axis. A double-chain structure is formed by hydrogen bonds between adjacent zig-zag chains. There are also pi-pi stacking interactions between the bipy ligands, with an average distance of 3.62 A resulting in a two-dimensional network structure. Compound 1 was tested as a catalyst for the oxidation of cyclohexene and styrene, with tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as oxidant. The catalytic activity (24 h and 75 degrees C) found for [Cu(H2btec)(bipy)]infinity shows a high value for the conversion of cyclohexene (64.5%), and a lower one for styrene (23.7%). High turnover frequency (TOF) values for the epoxide products were observed, indicating that the catalyst synthesized in this work, not only has a high activity and selectivity for epoxidation reactions but is also very efficient.

The structure of the title compound, (C(10)H(10)N(3))(2)[ZnCl(4)], is composed of C(10)H(9)N(3)H(+) (DPAH(+)) cations and [ZnCl(4)](2-) anions. The two pyridyl rings of DPAH(+) are approximately coplanar, with a dihedral angle of 7.2 (2)° between their corresponding least-squares planes. The proton is disordered in a one-to-one ratio over the two chemically equivalent pyridyl N atoms. An intra-molecular hydrogen bond is formed between the pyridinium H atom and the pyridyl N atom of the other pyridyl ring. The Zn atom lies on a twofold rotation axis. There are also some weak N-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds. These inter-actions lead to the formation of an alternating zigzag chain in the solid state. The results clearly show that reducing agents normally used in hydro-thermal syntheses, such as metallic zinc employed here, are also active in terms of coordination chemistry.

Experimental redox potentials of the couples [Cu(R-L ( n ))(CH 3CN)] (2+,+), where L (1) is bis-(pyridine-2-ylmethyl)-benzylamine, L (2) is (pyridine-2-ylethyl)(pyridine-2-ylmethyl)-benzylamine, and R is H, Me, or CF 3, were determined in dichloromethane solution. The compounds exhibited one simple quasi-reversible wave over the measured potential range of -500 to +1200 mV, and the E 1/2 values varied from +200 to +850 mV versus SCE. These experimental values were correlated with redox potentials calculated using density functional theory. The optimized geometries and the predicted redox potentials were obtained using the BP86 functional and a combination of the basis sets LACV3P** (for Cu) and cc-pVTZ(-f) (for light atoms). A distortion analysis of all of the optimized geometries for both oxidation states was performed using the generalized interconversion coordinate phi. A linear relation was obtained between this parameter and the redox potentials. However, the [Cu(CF 3-L (1))(CH 3CN)] (+) complex showed the largest deviation, which was explained by the more-rigid structure of the ligand.

The palladium (II) bis-chelate Pd (L(1-3))(2) and platinum (II) tetranuclear Pt(4)(L(4))(4) complexes of benzaldehyde thiosemicarbazone derivatives have been synthesized, and characterized by elemental analysis and IR, FAB(+)-mass and NMR ((1)H, (13)C) spectroscopy. The complex Pd(L(2))(2) [HL(2) = m-CN-benzaldehyde thiosemicarbazone] shows a square-planar geometry with two deprotonated ligands (L) coordinated to Pd(II) through the nitrogen and sulphur atoms in a transarrangement, while the complex Pt(4)(L(4))(4) [HL(4) = 4-phenyl-1-benzaldehyde thiosemicarbazone] has a tetranuclear geometry with four tridentate ligands coordinated to four Pt(II) ions through the carbon (aromatic ring), nitrogen, and sulphur atoms where the ligands are deprotonated at the NH group. The in vitro antitumor activity of the ligands and their complexes was determined against different human tumor cell lines, which revealed that the palladium (II) and platinum (II) complexes are more cytotoxic than their ligands with IC(50) values at the range of 0.07-3.67 microM. The tetranuclear complex Pt(4)(L(4))(4), with the phenyl group in the terminal amine of the ligand, showed higher antiproliferative activity (CI(50) = 0.07-0.12 microM) than the other tested palladium (II) complexes.

Two new ligands, 2-[(bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amino)methyl]-4-methylphenol (HL) and 2-[(bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amino)methyl]-4-methyl-6-(methylthio)phenol (HSL), were synthesized and were used to prepare the trinuclear copper(II) complex {[CuSL(Cl)]2Cu}(PF6)2.H2O (1) and the corresponding binuclear complexes [Cu2(SL)2](PF6)2 (2) and [Cu2L2](PF6)2 (3). The crystal structure of 1 shows two different coordination environments: two square base pyramidal centers (Cu1 and Cu1a, related by a C2 axes), acting as ligands of a distorted square planar copper center (Cu2) by means of the sulfur atom of the SCH3 substituent and the bridging phenoxo oxygen atom of the ligand (Cu2-S = 2.294 A). Compounds 2 and 3 show two equivalent distorted square base pyramidal copper(II) centers, bridged in an axial-equatorial fashion by two phenoxo groups, thus defining an asymmetric Cu2O2 core. A long copper-sulfur distance measured in 2 (2.9261(18) A) suggests a weak bonding interaction. This interaction induces a torsion angle between the methylthio group and the phenoxo plane resulting in a dihedral angle of 41.4(5) degrees. A still larger distortion is observed in 1 with a dihedral angle of 74.0(6) degrees. DFT calculations for 1 gave a ferromagnetic exchange between first neighbors interaction, the calculated J value for this interaction being +11.7 cm-1. In addition, an antiferromagnetic exchange for 1 was obtained for the second neighbor interaction with a J value of -0.05 cm-1. The Bleaney-Bowers equation was used to fit the experimental magnetic susceptibility data for 2 and 3; the best fit was obtained with J values of +3.4 and -16.7 cm-1, respectively. DFT calculations for 2 and 3 confirm the nature and the values of the J constants obtained by the fit of the experimental data. ESR and magnetic studies on the reported compounds show a weak exchange interaction between the copper(II) centers. The low values obtained for the coupling constants can be explained in terms of a poor overlap between the magnetic orbitals, due to the axial-equatorial phenoxo bridging mode observed in these complexes.

Two new hybrid organic/inorganic copper oxovanadium diphosphonates [Cu2(phen)2(O3PCH2PO3)(V2O5)(H2O)] x H2O (1) and [(Cu2(phen)2(O3P(CH2)3PO3)(V2O5)] x C3H8 (2) have been obtained by hydrothermal synthesis. The compounds are monoclinic, and they crystallize in the space group P2(1)/n with cell parameters of a = 11.788(2) A, b = 17.887(3) A, c = 14.158(2) A, and beta = 93.99(0) degrees and in the space group C2/c with cell parameters of a = 11.025(1) A, b = 18.664(2) A, c = 15.054(2) A, and beta = 90.06(0) degrees, respectively. Both compounds present two-dimensional frameworks built up from infinite chains of corner-sharing vanadium tetrahedra and diphosphonate groups connected by copper tetramers for (1) and copper dimers for (2). The remarkable feature of (2) is the encapsulation of propane molecules, stabilized by strong hydrogen bonding between the layers. The magnetic properties of the compounds have been investigated showing antiferromagnetic coupling with Tmax = 64 K for (1) and Curie-like paramagnetic behavior for (2).

The trimer [Co3(mu-OOCCF3)4(mu-H2O)2(OOCCF3)2(H2O)2(C4H8O2)].2C4H8O2. (1) is composed of three tetragonally distorted Co(II) centers bridged by four trifluoroacetates and two bridging water molecules. 1,4-Dioxane is coordinated at a distance of 2.120(3) A from the terminal cobalt Co2; the remaining oxygen of this 1,4-dioxane links the terminal cobalt to a neighbor trimer, forming a one-dimensional chain. The crystal structure displays a network of hydrogen bonds between four noncoordinated 1,4-dioxane molecules and the coordinated terminal water molecules. The magnetic properties of 1 were analyzed with the use of the Hamiltonian including isotropic exchange interactions between real spins of a high-spin Co(II), spin-orbit coupling and a low-symmetry crystal field acting within the (4)T(1g) ground manifold of each cobalt ion. A weak antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between cobalt ions in 1 was found. The results of the magnetic model are in good agreement with the experimental observations.

The copper (II) complexes (CuL(2)) were prepared by reaction of Cu(CH(3)COO)(2) with the corresponding derivatives of acylthioureas in a Cu:HL molar ratio of 1:2. Acylthiourea ligands, N,N-diethyl-N'-(R-benzoyl) thiourea (HL(1-3)) [R=H, o-Cl and p-NO(2)] were synthesized in high yield (78-83%) and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy. The complexes CuL(2) were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, FAB(+)-MS, magnetic susceptibility measurements, EPR and cyclic voltammetry. The crystal structure of the complex Cu(L(2))(2) shows a nearly square-planar geometry with two deprotonated ligands (L) coordinated to Cu(II) through the oxygen and sulfur atoms in a cis arrangement. The antitumor activity of the copper(II) complexes with acylthiourea ligands was evaluated in vitro against the mouse mammary adenocarcinoma TA3 cell line. These complexes exhibited much higher cytotoxic activity (IC(50) values in the range of 3.9-6.9 muM) than their corresponding ligands (40-240 muM), which indicates that the coordination of the chelate ligands around the Cu(II) enhances the antitumor activity and, furthermore, this result confirmed that the participation of the nitro and chloro substituent groups in the complex activities is slightly relevant. The high accumulation of the complexes Cu(L(2))(2) and Cu(L(3))(2) in TA3 tumor cells and the much faster binding to cellular DNA than Cu(L(1))(2) are consistent with the in vitro cytotoxic activities found for these copper complexes.

A low-molecular weight chromium-containing fraction of the material resulting from dichromate reduction by bovine liver homogenate was investigated by NMR and ES-MS. The ES-MS spectrum showed a readily detectable peak at m/z 786.1. The same molecular weight reasonably agreed with the relatively low diffusion coefficient measured by NMR-DOSY experiments on the main species observed in the (1)H NMR spectrum. At least two downfield shifted and broad paramagnetic signals were apparent in the (1)H NMR spectrum. Temperature dependence of chemical shift was exploited in order to estimate the diamagnetic shift of the signals in the diamagnetic region of the spectrum. 2D TOCSY, NOESY, COSY and (1)H-(13)C HMQC spectra revealed the presence of aromatic protons (which were assigned as His residues), Gly and some other short chain amino-acids. Combinations of the molecular masses of such components together with acetate (which is present in the solution) and chromium atoms allowed a tentative proposal of a model for the compound.

The solvothermal reaction of (N(C(4)H(9))(4))(2)[Re(2)Cl(8)] with trifluoroacetic acid and acetic anhydride leads to the new rhenium trifluoroacetate dimer N(C(4)H(9))(4)[Re(2)(OOCCF(3))Cl(6)] (1) and to the rhenium carbonyl dimer Re(2)(mu(2)-Cl)(2)(CO)(8) as the rhenium-reduced byproduct. The reaction of the precursor complex, N(C(4)H(9))(4)[Re(2)(OOCCF(3))Cl(6)] (1), with the organometallic carboxylic acid (CO)(6)Co(2)HCCCOOH leads to the cluster of clusters compound Re(2)(OOCCCHCo(2)(CO)(6))(4)Cl(2) (2), which has the dimer structure of Re(2)(OOCR)(4)Cl(2). Cyclic voltammetric measurements show that Re(2)(OOCCCHCo(2)(CO)(6))(4)Cl(2) (2) has one reduction centered on the dirhenium core and a reduction centered on the cobalt atoms. DFT calculations have been used to rationalize the observed displacements of the voltammetric signals in Re(2)(OOCCCHCo(2)(CO)(6))(4)Cl(2) (2) compared to the parent ligand (CO)(6)Co(2)HCCCOOH and rhenium pivalate.

The reaction of the organometallic carboxylic acid HOOCCCHCo(2)(CO)(6) with copper(II) methoxide leads to a new inorganometallic cluster; Cu(3)[mu(2)-(CCHCo(2)(CO)(6))](3). This cluster has a triangular core of copper(I) centers surrounded by three CCHCo(2)(CO)(6) fragments. The structure of the cluster has short Cu-Cu and Cu-Co distances (average 2.500 and 2.540 A, respectively). DFT calculations provide a rationalization of the peculiar bonding in this cluster.

We report EPR measurements in single-crystal samples at the microwave frequencies 9.8 and 34.3 GHz and magnetic susceptibility measurements in polycrystalline samples for the ternary complex of copper with aspartic acid and phenanthroline, (L-aspartato)(1,10-phenanthroline)copper(II) hydrate. The crystal lattice of this compound is composed of two dissimilar copper ions identified as Cu(A) and Cu(B), which are in two types of copper chains called A and B, respectively, running parallel to the b crystal axis. The copper ions in the A chains are connected by the aspartic acid molecule, and those in the B chains by a chemical path that involves a carboxylate bridge and a hydrogen bond. Both chains are held together by a complex network of hydrogen bonds and by hydrophobic interactions between aromatic amines. Magnetic susceptibility data indicate a Curie-Weiss behavior in the studied temperature range (2-300 K). The EPR spectra at 9.8 GHz display a single exchange collapsed resonance for any magnetic field orientation, in the so-called strong exchange regime. Those at 34.3 GHz are within the so-called weak exchange regime and display two resonances which belong to each type of copper ion chain. The decoupling of the spectra at 34.3 GHz using a theory based on Anderson's model for the case of two weakly exchange coupled spins S = (1)/(2) allows one to obtain the angular variation of the squares of the g-factor and the peak-to-peak line width of each resonance. This model also allows one to evaluate the exchange parameter |J(AB)/k| = 2.7(6) mK associated with the chemical path connecting dissimilar copper ions. The line width data obtained for each component of the spectra at 34.3 GHz are analyzed in terms of a model based on Kubo and Tomita's theory, to obtain the exchange parameters |J(A)/k| = 0.77(2) K and |J(B)/k| = 1.44(2) K associated with the chemical paths connecting the similar copper ions of types A and B, respectively.
