The article presents a research whose aim was to determine the carbon dioxide (CO2) solubility of commercially available surfactants and to assess their ability to generate C02-in-brine foams using foam-stability tests in windowed cells, to assess the foam structure in a windowed cell using high-pressure small-angle-neutron-scattering (HP SANS), to measure transient mobility using Berea sandstone and computed-tomography (CT) imaging of C02 foams in brine-saturated polystyrene cores.

Abstract: A conceptual multi-step process demonstrates the feasibility of CO2 sequestration in an integrated operation utilizing by products primarily obtained from fossil fuel combustion (fly ash) and oil and gas production (brine). This process includes a carbonation reaction utilizing a brine solution and CO2 as reactants under mild reaction conditions. CaO rich fly ashes are added to increase the pH level of the reactant brine, maximizing the reaction efficiency of the carbonation reaction. Furthermore, these materials can also provide a source of Ca in addition to the Ca present in the brine for carbonation. The calcium from fly ashes and brine both contribute to the formation of calcium carbonate during the carbonation reaction. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The reaction of carbon dioxide (CO2) with brine samples collected from the Oriskany Formation in Indiana County, PA, was investigated in an autoclave reactor under various conditions. A geochemical code, PHREEQC, was used as to simulate the reaction in the autoclave reactor. The combined experimental and modeling data suggests that pH (pH > 9) plays a key role in the formation of carbonate minerals. The effects of temperature and CO2 pressure have a lesser impact on the formation of carbonate minerals. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background: This study was carried out to evaluate the urodynamic and ultrasonographic findings after tension-free vagina tape (TVT) procedure on stress urinary incontinent women.Methods: Ninety women suffering from genuine stress incontinence without pelvic relaxation syndrome underwent surgery. Urodynamic measurement, one-hour pad test and introital ultrasonographic evaluation were performed preoperatively and one year after surgery. Additional ultrasonographic surveillance of the urethra was performed immediately after the operation. The position and mobility of the bladder neck was compared pre- and post-operatively in relation to the inferior edge of the pubic symphysis.Result: Eight women were excluded for various reasons. Among the 82 women who completed the study, 76 (93%) were cured, four were improved and two failed. No major intra- or post-operative complications occurred. The position and mobility of the bladder neck showed no significant difference before and after surgery. A urethral knee angle was noted ultrasonographically on cured and improved patients during maximum straining. Nine patients with immediate postoperative voiding difficulty were found to have a pronounced mid-urethra angulation. The symptom and sign were resolved by time after urethra depressing. Urodynamic assessment of the urethral pressure profile and other parameter showed no significant difference before and after the surgery except that a positive pressure transmission in the middle portion of the urethra was noted among 70 (87.5%) of cured and improved subjects.Conclusion: Tension-free vagina tape operation is an effective surgical procedure for the treatment of female urinary stress incontinence. The procedure seems neither to change hypermobility nor to elevate the position of bladder neck. Urinary continence after surgery is most probably achieved by creating a dynamic mid-urethral knee angulation by which the urethra is closed i.e. kinked at stress. Lifting of the mid-urethra resulted in postoperative voiding difficulty. It is the important that the tape is placed tension free under the urethra. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible regulatory roles of insulin-like growth factors (IGF) and IGF binding protein-1 (IGFBP-1) on postmenopausal endometrium in women undergoing hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Endometrial tissues and blood samples were collected from 25 postmenopausal women with abnormal uterine bleeding before and after HRT. As a control, blood and endometrial samples were also obtained at mid-luteal phase (days 18-23 of the menstrual cycle) from 10 women with benign uterine leiomyoma during surgical intervention. Expression of mRNA for IGF-I, IGF-II, type 1-IGF receptor, IGFBP-1, oestrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) in the endometrium was explored by a semiquantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Serum concentrations of IGFBP-1, oestradiol, progesterone, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) were also determined. In the endometrium obtained from postmenopausal women with abnormal uterine bleeding (before HRT), expression of IGFBP-1 was undetectable, whereas PR expression was abundant. HRT significantly up-regulated expression of IGFBP-1 but down-regulated PR. Moderate expression of IGF-I, IGF-II, type 1-IGF receptor and ER was identified in the postmenopausal endometrium before HRT. HRT significantly down-regulated IGF-I, up-regulated IGF-II, but had no effects on expression of type 1-IGF receptor and ER. In conclusion, up-regulation of IGFBP-1 collaboratively with down-regulation of IGF-I may account for the protective effect of progesterone in HRT on the endometrium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: We investigated the effects of DALDA (tyrosine-D-arginine-phenylalanine-lysine-NH2), a mu-selective opioid peptide, on heart rate and blood pressure in fetal sheep with long-term instrument implantation.Study Design: DALDA was given as an intravenous bolus in doses ranging from 0.15 to 0.5 mg/kg. A 0.5 mg/kg dose of DALDA was given in the presence of the opioid antagonist naloxone and its quaternary analog naloxone methiodide (6 mg/h); it was also given in conjunction with the beta-adrenergic antagonist propranolol (2 mg/h). Statistical analyses were performed by 1-way and 2-way analysis of variance.Results: The fetus responded to DALDA with an increase in heart rate with all doses (P <.01) but without any change in blood pressure. This response was abolished by naloxone (P <.001), naloxone methiodide (P =.003), and propranolol (P <.001).Conclusions: In the fetus intravenous DALDA increases heart rate without any change in blood pressure by way of the mu receptor and through central sympathetic activation. The aim of this study was to investigate the second trimester concentrations of maternal urine human chorionic gonadotrophin beta-core fragment (HCGbetacf) in Asian pregnanci2es with fetal chromosomal abnormalities. HCGbetacf concentrations were analysed from 34 urine samples in chromosomally abnormal pregnancies, including 28 cases of Down's syndrome, one case of trisomy 18, and five cases of other chromosomal abnormalities (one mosaic deletion and four translocations), and in a cohort of 268 normal pregnancies receiving second trimester amniocentesis. Results were normalized to urine creatinine (Cr) concentration and converted to the multiple of the median (MOM) concentration for the appropriate gestation. The median HCGbetacf MOM concentrations of Down's syndrome pregnancies (12.89) was significantly higher than that of normal pregnancies (1. 06) (P < 0.00001). Wide variations of HCGbetacf concentrations were observed in other chromosomally abnormal pregnancies. There were 18 of 28 (64%) Down's syndrome cases but one of five (20%) other chromosomally abnormal cases with HCGbetacf concentrations above the 95th centile of the control values (8.22 MOM cut-off). Laparoscopic rescue after tubal anastomosis failure is reported for the first time. The patient was a 33 year old woman sterilized by Pomeroy's method. Restoration of fertility was achieved by mini-laparotomy with isthmo—isthmic end-to-end anastomosis of bilateral tubes. Unfortunately, the patient did not become pregnant and tubal occlusion was diagnosed 6 months later by hysterosalpingography. Laparoscopic rescue with repeat isthmic—ampullary anastomosis and adhesiolysis was performed. Post-operatively, the patient had one menstruation and then achieved an intrauterine pregnancy. Instead of in-vitro fertilization/embryo transfer, laparoscopic rescue may be an alternative option for the patient with failed anastomosis. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

From July 1992 to May 1994, 31 cases of obstructive azoospermia-induced infertility underwent 35 epididymal sperm aspiration procedures and assisted reproductive techniques. These included in-vitro fertilization (IVF), zygote intra-Fallopian transfer (ZIFT), subzonal insemination (SUZI) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) with embryo transfer or tubal embryos transfer. The motile spermatozoa were retrieved using a gauge 24 Medicut cannula and flush medium. Total oocyte fertilization rate was 23.4% and the clinical pregnancy rate was 12.5% (four out of 32 treatment cycles). Congenital absence of the vas deferens was found in 16 cases (51.6%) and secondary genital duct obstruction was present in 15 cases (48.4%). In all, 29 aspirations were retrieved from the caput of the epididymis and six from the epididymal body or tail. The fertilization rate for the caput spermatozoa was much less than that for other areas of the epididymis (P < 0.05). Though there were no predictable differences in fertilization rates between the congenital and acquired groups, by using epididymal spermatozoa for assisted reproduction, the congenital group seemed to have a stronger tendency to achieve pregnancy (20 versus 5.9%). Neoadjuvant chemotherapy consisting of 2-3 courses of cisplatin, vincristine, and bleomycin was used in the primary treatment of 36 consecutive patients with locally advanced early-stage cervical carcinoma [International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stages Ib or IIa; tumor size, greater than or equal to 4 cm]. The effectiveness of the preoperative chemotherapy was evaluated in the surgical specimens. Among the 33 evaluable patients, the overall clinical response rate was 84.8%, which included a complete response in 8 patients (24.2%) and a partial response in 20 subjects (60.6%). No residual tumor was found in the surgical specimens obtained from 2 complete responders. This therapy induced varying degrees of tumor shrinkage and rendered radical surgery feasible in all evaluable cases despite the initial bulky size of the lesions. No significant difference was observed in the response rate according to age and disease stage. Lymph-node metastases were found after chemotherapy in 18.2% (6/33) of the patients. Grade II and III hematological toxicities occurred in 23.3% of the 90 chemotherapy cycles completed. Nausea and vomiting occurred to a mild to moderate degree in 75 (83.3%) cycles. These preliminary results suggest that the administration of induction chemotherapy involving two to three courses of cisplatin, vincristine, and bleomycin prior to surgery is effective in reducing the tumor volume and in providing better circumstances for surgical removal of the early yet bulky cervical tumors and results in tolerable toxicity.
