Background: A novel interspinous fixation system based on anatomical parameters and incorporating transfacetopedicular screws, was developed to treat degenerative disc diseases. The biomechanical characteristics of the novel system were evaluated using finite element analysis in comparison to other classical interspinous spacers., Methods: The L1-S1 lumbar spine finite element models were surgically implanted with the novel system, Coflex and DIAM devices at the L4/L5 segment to assess the range of motion, the pression distribution of intervertebral disc, the peak stresses on the spinous process and implant during various motions., Findings: Range of motions of the L4/L5 surgical segment were reduced by 29.13%, 61.27%, 77.35%, 33.33%, and the peak stresses of intervertebral disc were decreased by 36.82%, 67.31%, 73.00%, 69.57% for the novel system in flexion, extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation when compared with the Coflex, and they were declined by 34.53%, 57.86%, 75.81%, 25.21%; 36.22%, 67.31%, 75.01%, 71.40% compared with DIAM. The maximum stresses of the spinous process were 29.93 MPa, 24.66 MPa, 14.45 MPa, 24.37 MPa in the novel system, and those of Coflex and DIAM were 165.3 MPa, 109 MPa, 84.79 MPa, 47.66 MPa and 52.59 MPa, 48.78 MPa, 50.27 MPa, 44.16 MPa during the same condition., Interpretation: Compared to other interspinous spacer devices, the novel interspinous fixation system demonstrated excellent stability, effectively distributing load on the intervertebral disc, and reducing the risk of spinous process fractures. Introduction: For decades, radiofrequency (RF)-induced tissue fusion has garnered great attention due to its potential to replace sutures and staples for anastomosis of tissue reconstruction. However, the complexities of achieving high bonding strength and reducing excessive thermal damage present substantial limitations of existing fusion devices., Materials and Methods: This study proposed a discrete linkage-type electrode to carry out ex vivo RF-induced intestinal anastomosis experiments. The anastomotic strength was examined by burst pressure and shear strength test. The degree of thermal damage was monitored through an infrared thermal imager. And the anastomotic stoma fused by the electrode was further investigated through histopathological and ultrastructural observation., Results: The burst pressure and shear strength of anastomotic tissue can reach 62.2 ± 3.08 mmHg and 8.73 ± 1.11N, respectively, when the pressure, power and duration are 995 kPa, 160 W and 13 s, and the thermal damage can be controlled within limits. Histopathological and ultrastructural observation indicate that an intact and fully fused stomas with collagenic crosslink can be formed., Conclusion: The discrete linkage-type electrode presents favorable efficiency and security in RF-induced tissue fusion, and these results are informative to the design of electrosurgical medical devices with controllable pressure and energy delivery.

Purpose: This study aimed to design a novel electrode for reducing tissue thermal damage in radiofrequency-induced intestinal anastomosis., Material and Methods: We developed and compared two electrodes (Ring electrode, and Plum electrode with reduced section of the middle fusion area by nearly 80% arising from novel structural design) by performing ex-vivo experiments and finite element analysis., Results: In contrast to the Ring electrode group, slightly higher mean strength is acquired with the tensile force and burst pressure results increasing from 9.7 ± 1.47 N, 84.0 ± 5.99 mmHg to 11.1 ± 1.71 N, 89.4 ± 6.60 mmHg, respectively, as well as a significant reduction in tissue thermal damage for the Plum electrode group, with compression pressure of 20 kPa, RF energy of 120 W and welding duration of 8 s applied to the target regions to achieve anastomosis. Besides, the novel structural design of the Plum electrode can counteract the tension generated by intestinal peristalsis and enhance the biomechanical strength of the anastomotic area. The histological observation showed that the fusion area of the two-layer intestinal tissue is tightly connected with decreased thickness., Conclusion: The novel electrode (Plum electrode) could reduce tissue thermal damage in radiofrequency-induced intestinal anastomosis.

The mechanical properties of the stent graft are important factors influencing the outcome of TEVAR treatment and the occurrence of postoperative complications. The aim of this study is to improve and design a mechanical performance testing equipment for thoracic aortic stent grafts. The mechanical performance testing equipment consists of a radial force testing equipment of the stent graft designed by the wire compression grip method and a dynamic straightening force testing device with stable and controllable test conditions and continuously variable test angles. By constructing the testing equipment to physically measure the stent specimen, the experimental results reflect the trend of change and the simulation results are basically consistent, i.e. the mechanical properties of the thoracic aortic stent designed in this study is feasible and the measured data are valid. The testing equipment can provide the basis and reference direction for the quality testing of stent graft products, optimisation of mechanical properties of stent grafts and R&D innovation.

Background: The clinical outcomes of bipolar radiofrequency (RF) lipolysis, a prevalent non-invasive fat reduction procedure, hinge on the delicate balance between effective lipolysis and patient safety, with skin overheating and subsequent tissue damage as primary concerns., Objective: This study aimed to investigate a novel bipolar radiofrequency lipolysis technique, safeguarding the skin through an innovative PID temperature control algorithm., Methods: Utilizing COMSOL Multiphysics simulation software, a two-dimensional fat and skin tissue model was established, simulating various PID temperature control schemes. The crux of the simulation involved a comparative analysis of different PID temperatures at 45 °C, 50 °C, and 55 °C and constant power strategies, assessing their implications on skin temperature. Concurrently, a custom bipolar radiofrequency lipolysis device was developed, with ex vivo experiments conducted using porcine tissue for empirical validation., Results: The findings indicated that with PID settings of Kp = 7, Ki = 2, and Kd = 0, and skin temperature control at 45 °C or 50 °C, the innovative PID-based epidermal temperature control strategy successfully maintained the epidermal temperature within a safe range. This maintenance was achieved without compromising the effectiveness of RF lipolysis, significantly reducing the risk of thermal damage to the skin layers., Conclusion: Our research confirms the substantial practical utility of this advanced PID-based bipolar RF lipolysis technique in clinical aesthetic procedures, enhancing patient safety during adipose tissue ablation therapies.

Background: Proximal junctional kyphosis is a common long-term complication in adult spinal deformity surgery that involves long-segment posterior spinal fusion. However, the underlying biomechanical mechanisms of the impact of osteoporosis on proximal junctional kyphosis remain unclear. The present study was to evaluate adjacent segment degeneration and spine mechanical instability in osteoporotic patients who underwent long-segment posterior thoracolumbar fusion., Methods: Finite element models of the thoracolumbar spine T1-L5 with posterior long-segment T8-L5 fusion under different degrees of osteoporosis were constructed to analyze intervertebral disc stress characterization, vertebrae mechanical transfer, and pedicle screw system loads during various motions., Findings: Compared with normal bone mass, the maximum von Mises stresses of T7 and T8 were increased by 20.32%, 22.38%, 44.69%, 4.49% and 29.48%, 17.84%, 40.95%, 3.20% during flexion, extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation in the mild osteoporosis model, and by 21.21%, 18.32%, 88.28%, 2.94% and 37.76%, 15.09%, 61.47%, -0.04% in severe osteoporosis model. The peak stresses among T6/T7, T7/T8, and T8/T9 discs were 14.77 MPa, 11.55 MPa, and 2.39 MPa under lateral bending conditions for the severe osteoporosis model, respectively. As the severity of osteoporosis increased, stress levels on SCR8 and SCR9 intensified during various movements., Interpretation: Osteoporosis had an adverse effect on proximal junctional kyphosis. The stress levels in cortical bone, intervertebral discs and screws were increased with bone mass loss, which can easily lead to intervertebral disc degeneration, bone destruction as well as screw pullout. Objective: This pilot study aimed to observe intimal injuries related to stent retrieval in the iliac artery of a canine., Background: In-stent restenosis remains challenging owing to permanent stent implantation. A retrievable stent may be alternative for intervention without permanent residue., Methods: Five retrievable stents with point-to-point overlapped double-layer scaffolds were deployed into the iliac arteries and retrieved on days 14, 21, 28, 35, and 42 from five canines., Results: Arterial diameter decreased by 9-10% before retrieval and 15% on day 14 after retrieval. In the 14-day-stent, the stent surface was clean without visible fibrin. In the 28-day-stent, the overlay was mainly composed of fibrin and fibroblasts. The proliferation of smooth muscle cells has not yet been observed with α-smooth muscle actin staining. In the 42-day-stent, endothelial and smooth muscle cells decreased under the struts, and the internal elastic lamina was interrupted segmentally. Neointima formation involves fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells. Neointimal thickness was negatively correlated with strut space. Stent traces on the artery wall tended to be flat at a follow-up14 days after retrieval. The primary intima was completely covered by neointima. Two stents could not be retrieved because of in-stent thrombosis or capture loss., Conclusions: The stent was covered mainly by depositional fibrin after 28 days and by typical neointima after 42 days. Phase separation (PS) is a fundamental principle in diverse life processes including immunosurveillance. Despite numerous studies on PS, little is known about its dissolution. Here, it is shown that oleic acid (OA) dissolves the cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS)-deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) PS and inhibits immune surveillance of DNA. As solvent components control PS and metabolites are abundant cellular components, it is speculated that some metabolite(s) may dissolve PS. Metabolite-screening reveals that the cGAS-DNA condensates formed via PS are markedly dissolved by long-chain fatty acids, including OA. OA revokes intracellular cGAS-PS and DNA-induced activation. OA attenuates cGAS-mediated antiviral and anticancer immunosurveillance. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is an important tool for prostate cancer diagnosis, and accurate segmentation of MR prostate regions by computer-aided diagnostic techniques is important for the diagnosis of prostate cancer. In this paper, we propose an improved end-to-end three-dimensional image segmentation network using a deep learning approach to the traditional V-Net network (V-Net) network in order to provide more accurate image segmentation results. Firstly, we fused the soft attention mechanism into the traditional V-Net's jump connection, and combined short jump connection and small convolutional kernel to further improve the network segmentation accuracy. Then the prostate region was segmented using the Prostate MR Image Segmentation 2012 (PROMISE 12) challenge dataset, and the model was evaluated using the dice similarity coefficient (DSC) and Hausdorff distance (HD). The DSC and HD values of the segmented model could reach 0.903 and 3.912 mm, respectively. The experimental results show that the algorithm in this paper can provide more accurate three-dimensional segmentation results, which can accurately and efficiently segment prostate MR images and provide a reliable basis for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Self-nonself discrimination is vital for the immune system to mount responses against pathogens while maintaining tolerance toward the host and innocuous commensals during homeostasis. Here, we investigated how indiscriminate DNA sensors, such as cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS), make this self-nonself distinction. Screening of a small-molecule library revealed that spermine, a well-known DNA condenser associated with viral DNA, markedly elevates cGAS activation. Mechanistically, spermine condenses DNA to enhance and stabilize cGAS-DNA binding, optimizing cGAS and downstream antiviral signaling. Spermine promotes condensation of viral, but not host nucleosome, DNA. Deletion of viral DNA-associated spermine, by propagating virus in spermine-deficient cells, reduced cGAS activation. Spermine depletion subsequently attenuated cGAS-mediated antiviral and anticancer immunity. DNA is well-documented to stimulate immune response. However, the nature of the DNA to activate immune surveillance is less understood. Here, we show that the activation of cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) depends on DNA mechanical flexibility, which is controlled by DNA-sequence, -damage and -length. Consistently, DNA-sequence was shown to control cGAS activation. Structural analyses revealed that a conserved cGAS residue (mouse R222 or human R236) contributed to the DNA-flexibility detection. And the residue substitution neutralised the flexibility-controlled DNA-potential to activate cGAS, and relaxed the DNA-length specificity of cGAS. Moreover, low dose radiation was shown to mount cGAS-mediated acute immune surveillance (AIS) via repairable (reusable) DNAs in hrs. Loss of cGAS-mediated AIS decreased the regression of local and abscopal tumours in the context of focal radiation and immune checkpoint blockade. Purpose: Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variations have been implicated in various cancer types. Several attempts have been made in benign parathyroid adenoma (PA); however, mtDNA variants and copy number alterations have not been investigated in parathyroid carcinoma (PC). The present study aimed to explore the variations in the mitochondrial genome in parathyroid neoplasms., Methods: In this study, ultradeep targeted sequencing of mtDNA was performed in 12 cases with PC and 25 cases with PA. Germline and somatic variants in the mitochondrial genome were analysed according to clinical features. The mtDNA copy number relative to nuclear DNA was measured., Results: A total of 821 germline variants and 23 somatic mutations were identified. All 160 germline nonsynonymous variants in the coding sequence (CDS) were predicted to be likely benign, and germline variants frequently occurred (26.3%) in the displacement loop region. Tumour somatic mutation in a CDS with heteroplasmic factor (HF) >0.8 showed a higher mtDNA copy number (p = 0.039). Using Spearman's rank test, tumour mtDNA copy number revealed a positive correlation with serum levels of intact parathyroid hormone and calcium., Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that null recurrent mtDNA mutational hotspots were PC specific. An increased mtDNA copy number in parathyroid neoplasms was associated with somatic CDS mutations with a high HF and major clinical features. Metabolism is often regulated by the transcription and translation of RNA. In turn, it is likely that some metabolites regulate enzymes controlling reversible RNA modification, such as N 6 -methyladenosine (m 6 A), to modulate RNA. This hypothesis is at least partially supported by the findings that multiple metabolic diseases are highly associated with fat mass and obesity-associated protein (FTO), an m 6 A demethylase. However, knowledge about whether and which metabolites directly regulate m 6 A remains elusive. Here, we show that NADP directly binds FTO, independently increases FTO activity, and promotes RNA m 6 A demethylation and adipogenesis. We screened a set of metabolites using a fluorescence quenching assay and NADP was identified to remarkably bind FTO. In vitro demethylation assays indicated that NADP enhances FTO activity. Furthermore, NADP regulated mRNA m 6 A via FTO in vivo, and deletion of FTO blocked NADP-enhanced adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. These results build a direct link between metabolism and RNA m 6 A demethylation.

Purpose: Knowing the course of Alzheimer's disease is very important to prevent the deterioration of the disease, and accurate segmentation of sensitive lesions can provide a visual basis for the diagnosis results. This study proposes an improved end-to-end dual-functional 3D convolutional neural network for segmenting bilateral hippocampi from 3D brain MRI scans and diagnosing AD progression states simultaneously., Methods: The proposed neural network is based on the V-Net and adopts an end-to-end structure. In order to relieve the excessive amount of convolutional parameters at the bottom of the V-Net, we change them to bottleneck architecture. Based on the segmentation network, we establish a classification network for diagnosing pathological states of brain. In order to balance the two tasks of hippocampi segmentation and brain pathological states diagnosis, we designed a unique loss function. This study included 132 samples, of which 100 were selected as training, and the remaining 32 were used to test the performance of our model. During training, we adopted fivefold cross-validation method., Results: We selected the intersection over union and dice coefficient to evaluate the hippocampus segmentation performance, while the brain pathological states diagnosis performance was evaluated by accuracy, specificity, sensitivity, precision and F1 score. By using the proposed neural network, the left hippocampi segmentation Iou and dice coefficient reach 0.8240 ± 0.020 and 0.9035 ± 0.020, respectively. The right hippocampi Iou and dice coefficient reach 0.8454 ± 0.023 and 0.9162 ± 0.023, respectively. The accuracy, specificity, sensitivity, precision and F1 score of three-category classification of brain pathology are 84%, 92%, 84%, 86% and 85%, respectively., Conclusion: The proposed neural network has two functions of brain pathological states diagnosis and bilateral hippocampi segmentation with higher robustness and accuracy, respectively. The segmented bilateral hippocampi can be used as a reference for clinical decision making or intervention.

Purpose: Accurately detecting and removing pectoral muscle areas depicting on mediolateral oblique (MLO) view mammograms are an important step to develop a computer-aided detection scheme to assess global mammographic density or tissue patterns. This study aims to develop and test a new fully automated, accurate and robust method for segmenting pectoral muscle in MLO mammograms., Methods: The new method includes the following steps. First, a small rectangular region in the top-left corner of the MLO mammogram which may contain pectoral muscle is captured and enhanced by the fractional differential method. Next, an improved iterative threshold method is applied to segment a rough binary boundary of the pectoral muscle in the small region. Then, a rough contour is fitted with the least squares method on the basis of points of the rough boundary. Last, the fitting contour is subjected to local active contour evolution to obtain the final pectoral muscle segmentation line. The method has been tested on 720 MLO mammograms., Results: The segmentation results generated using the new scheme were evaluated by two expert mammographic radiologists using a 5-scale rating system. More than 65% were rated above scale 3. When assessing the segmentation results generated using Hough transform, morphologic thresholding methods and Unet-based model, less than 20%, 35% and 47% of segmentation results were rated above scale 3 by two radiologists, respectively. Quantitative data analysis results show that the Dice coefficient of 0.986 ± 0.005 is obtained. In addition, the mean rate of errors and Hausdorff distance between the contours detected by automated and manual segmentation are FP = 1.71 ± 3.82%, FN = 5.20 ± 3.94% and 2.75 ± 1.39 mm separately., Conclusion: The proposed method can be used to segment the pectoral muscle in MLO mammograms with higher accuracy and robustness.

Simulations can mimic the environment that refers to the surgery operation to improve the technical skills of the trainees. In this paper, we designed a new cardiac surgery simulative training system. The isolated pig heart was selected as the heart model. A mechanical device was designed to achieve the beating of heart model. At the same time, adjusting frequencies of mechanical movement could change the rating of heartbeat. In order to validate the rationality of the system, 12 non-medical specialty students and 12 medical specialty students were divided into two groups, which consecutively accepted seven-days of training for off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting using the cardiac surgery simulative training system. The time for completing bypass grafting before and after training were recorded. And the bridging outcomes of each trainee were assessed by 3 surgery cardiac surgeons using the object structured assessments of technical skill (OSATS) criteria. After training, each trainee could finish the bypass suturing in a shorter time than before training, and the scores of each trainee assessed by OSATS criteria were also improved. The results showed that the cardiac surgery simulative training system had better training effect in improving the surgical techniques, operation skills and proficiency of surgical instruments of trainees.

Late stent thrombosis (LST) following drug-eluting stent (DES) implantation in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) is often associated with delayed vascular healing, resulting from vascular inflammation and hypersensitivity to durable polymers and drugs. Therefore, DES design, materials, and coatings have been technologically revolutionized. Herein, we designed a novel abluminal groove-filled biodegradable polymer sirolimus-eluting stent (AGF-BP-SES), with a sirolimus content of only about one-third of traditional DES. The mechanical performances of AGF-BP-SES during compression and expansion were investigated. The pharmacokinetic (PK) profile of sirolimus was studied in the swine model. The in vivo efficacy of AGF-BP-SES was compared with that of Xience PRIME ® stent. The results showed that AGF-BP-SES exhibited mechanical properties similar to traditional DES, including the rebound ratio of radial contraction/direction, rebound ratio of axial contraction/direction, and inhomogeneity of compression/expansion. Despite utilizing a reduced dose of sirolimus, AGF-BP-SES delivered sirolimus to the coronary artery in a controlled and efficient manner. The stent maintained a safe and effective local drug concentration without local or systemic risks. In the swine model, histopathological indicators predicted safety and biocompatibility of AGF-BP-SES. In conclusion, AGF-BP-SES maintained similar mechanical properties as other stents while reducing the drug-loading capacity, and showed a favorable safety and efficacy profile of the targeted DES.

Clarifying changes in gastrointestinal tissue compressed by surgical stapler is a crucial prerequisite for stapler design optimization. For this study, a stapler was modified, and multifrequency bioimpedance of a porcine small intestine tissue compressed by the stapler was measured. The Cole Y model was fitted to the bioimpedance, and changes in tissue were analyzed using model parameters: G 0 , extracellular fluid conductance; ΔG, intracellular fluid conductance; C cpeF , equivalent capacitance of cell membrane. The changes could be divided into two stages: first, all parameters decreased sharply with slopes more than 15.70 ± 2.67, 4.25 ± 1.23 μS/s and 72.68 ± 6.99 pF/s respectively; and subsequently, with an increase in compression strength, G 0 decreased with slopes less than 2.54 ± 0.40 μS/s, ΔG decreased slightly with slope of 0.26 ± 0.04 μS/s after fluctuating mildly, and C cpeF remained nearly invariant after initially increasing with slope of -2.94 ± 0.64 pF/s. In conclusion, when the stapler is closed, a portion of tissue is squeezed out of the measurement space, causing all parameters' sharp decrease. Subsequently, the stapler continues compressing the tissue, leading to extracellular fluid expulsion. The changes in intracellular fluid are related to the compression strength and may be explained by cell restoration. This study could provide a basis for stapler design optimization.

Considering the problems such as reposition limited, easily detached and singly fired of the existing clip products, we developed an endoscopic multiple-clip applier which can apply 4 clips fired successively at a time. Th instrument also equipped with an independent grasper which can be used to clamp target tissues. In order to explor its feasibility and effectiveness of endoluminal closure of gastric perforation, 22 pig stomachs were making a 1 cm full-thickness incision from outside and closed by multiple-clip applier (n = 12) in vitro. Outcome was measured by bursting pressure and compared with negative control (n = 5) and hand suture (n = 5). We set a threshold pressure value (10 mm Hg) for a secure closure. Except 2 cases of invalid data, the mean bursting pressures of negative control, multiple-clip applier, hand suture were (1.5 ± 0.3) mm Hg, (46.0 ± 7.1) mm Hg, and (72.5 ± 7.7) mm Hg, respectively. The results showed that bursting pressure of multiple-clip applier was significantly higher than that of negative control (P < 0.05) and threshold value. Multiple-clip applier can be served as an effective and safe device to perform the endoluminal closure of gastric perforation.

Bipolar radiofrequency-induced thermo-fusion has been explored as an advanced surgical method for intestinal anastomoses; however, the histological characteristics of collagen denaturation and injuries arising from this process remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the microcosmic changes and tissue damage of fusion regions with various parameters of injury. Ex vivo colons of pigs were fused serosa-serosa on two carrier rings, which were installed on a homemade anastomotic device. Five levels of compressive pressure from 171 to 313 kPa were applied for 5s to fuse the colons under radiofrequency power of 160 W, and then the collagen denaturation of the fused region was examined by transmission electron microscopy. Light microscopy was utilized to observe histological slices that were stained with picrosirius red in order to visualize the tissue injuries under two levels of radiofrequency power (120 vs. 140 W) and operation time (5 vs. 10s). Transmission electron micrographs showed that increased compressive pressure led to thicker denatured collagen fibrils and wider gaps between each collagen fibril. Serosa adhesion regions appeared abundant in collagen. No histological differences were observed when 120 W of power was applied for 5 and 10s. Significant muscle cracking occurred when colons were fused using 140 W for 5s. When the operation time was extended to 10s, 140 W led to tight fusion and less splitting on muscles. These results suggest that higher compressive pressure results in more severe collagen unfolding and also reduces collagen crosslinking in fused colons. Accurate measurements of voltage and current from electrosurgery are the basis of development of electrosurgery with feedback function. We, therefore, developed a parameter measurement system based on PC, with high voltage and current from electrosurgery being sensed with transformers, amplified, filtered, transformed into single-ended signals, and then into RMS signals. The root mean square (RMS) signals were transformed into digital signals through DAQ card and the data was processed in PC with Labview. The process included sampling, displaying and storage. The experiment results indicated that the measurement system could measure the output parameters from electrosurgery steadily and correctly so that the development of the system has been successful. It can be the basis of development of embedded parameters measurement system and can provide accurate feedback information for intellectual electrosurgery.

Haptic feedback plays a significant role in minimally invasive robotic surgery (MIRS). A major deficiency of the current MIRS is the lack of haptic perception for the surgeon, including the commercially available robot da Vinci surgical system. In this paper, a dynamics model of a haptic robot is established based on Newton-Euler method. Because it took some period of time in exact dynamics solution, we used a digital PID arithmetic dependent on robot dynamics to ensure real-time bilateral control, and it could improve tracking precision and real-time control efficiency. To prove the proposed method, an experimental system in which two Novint Falcon haptic devices acting as master-slave system has been developed. Simulations and experiments showed proposed methods could give instrument force feedbacks to operator, and bilateral control strategy is an effective method to master-slave MIRS. The proposed methods could be used to tele-robotic system.

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is finding increasing application and acceptance as a non-invasive approach to the treatment of targeted malignancy. Despite the wealth of research and interest in HIFU, there are still a number of issues that need to be overcome to extend its clinical applications. These relate to the accuracy of placing the HIFU beam, the ability to visualize the target volume, and the understanding of the beam interaction with tissue. In this paper, the output characteristics of a single element HIFU transducer have been investigated with the assistance of a six-axis modified industrial robot. It is shown in the experimental results that clearly defined thermal or mechanical damage can be produced by changing the parameters of the HIFU. The nature and patterns of damage produced by pre-programmed treatment are now being investigated in tissue.
