Abstract

Secondary soil salinisation occurs as a function of human interaction with the landscape. Increasing salinity is a major constraint to crop yield. The electrical conductivity of a saturated soil-paste extract ([EC.sub.e], dS [m.sup.-1]) defines the level of salinity in soil. In order to manage salinity, farmers need to map its variation. However, [EC.sub.e] determination is time-consuming and expensive. Digital mapping of [EC.sub.e] is possible by using ancillary data such as easy-to-obtain digital elevation model, gamma-ray spectrometry and electromagnetic (EM) induction data. In this paper, we used these ancillary data and empirical best linear unbiased prediction (E- BLUP) to make a digital map of [EC.sub.e]. In this regard, we found that elevation, radioelement of thorium (Th) and logEM38-v were the most statistically useful ancillary data. We also developed an error-budget procedure to quantify the relative contributions that model, input (for all the ancillary datasets), and combined and individual covariate (for each of the ancillary datasets) error made to the prediction error of our map of [EC.sub.e]. The error-budget procedure used ordinary kriging, E-BLUP and conditional simulation to produce numerous realisations of the data and their underlying errors. Results show that the combined error of model error and input error was -4.44 dS [m.sup.-1]. Compared with the standard deviation of observed soil [EC.sub.e] (3.61 dS [m.sup.-1]). the error was large. Of this error, most was attributable to the input error (1.38 dS [m.sup.-1]), which is larger than the model error (0.02 dS [m.sup.-1]). In terms of the input error, we determined that the larger standard deviation is attributable to the lack of ancillary data, namely the [EC.sub.a] in areas adjacent to the Darling River and on the aeolian dune where data collection was difficult owing to dense native vegetation. Lake Urmia in north-western Iran is one of the largest hypersaline lakes in the world, and agricultural production in the surrounding area is limited by soil salinity. We investigated the effects of salinity on belowground microbial communities in soils collected from fields of cultivated onions (.Allium cepa L.) and lucerne (Medicago sativa L.), and sites with the native halophyte samphire (Salicornia europaea L.). We tested the hypotheses that salinity reduces microbial biomass and changes the structure of the microbial community. The physical and chemical properties of soil samples were analysed, and phospholipid fatty acids were identified as signatures for various microbial groups. We found that the organic carbon (OC) content was the dominant determinant of microbial biomass. We also found linear relationships between OC and the biomass of various groups of organisms across the wide salinity gradient studied. Salinity, on the other hand, caused changes in the microbial fatty acid composition that indicated adaptation to stress and favoured saprotrophic fungi over bacteria, and Gram-negative bacteria over Gram-positive. Principal component analysis showed that salinity variables and microbial stress indices formed one group, and OC and microbial biomass another. The importance of OC for high microbial biomass in severely stressed soils indicates that OC amendment may be used to mitigate salt stress and as a method of managing saline soils. Salt- and plant-water stress are widely considered to be major abiotic stresses threatening crop production in dry areas. Innovative methods to alleviate salt and plant-water stress that are both practical and economically efficient are in great demand. While the most common reclamation strategy for salt-affected soils is to flush the salts out of the root zone with low salinity/sodicity water, this is challenged by the fact that water is commonly scarce in areas affected by salt stress. The use of specific soil amendments or a combination of them in such areas may well solve some of these problems. Biochar has, in fact, been shown that, in some instances, it is able to effectively reduce salt stress to plants. Other porous materials, such as pumice, have not yet been considered although pumice has been reported to contribute to water retention under arid conditions. Further potential amendments include organic residues, as they can produce beneficial impacts on plant growth by improving soil functions. To date, however, limited research has attempted to unravel (and compare) the effects of either pumice and/or biochar in alleviating salt and plant-water stress. There is also scant information on (i) how to minimise the impact of biochar on the salinity of soils in dry regions; (ii) the underlying mechanisms explaining how the use of either pumice or biochar amendments can decrease soil salinity under arid conditions; and (iii) whether individual or combined additions of either pumice and/or an organic amendment, algae, to a sandy soil alleviates salt and water-stress on plant growth. Therefore, my objective in this study is to investigate whether these amendments can be used in the formulation of Technosols specifically designed to reduce salinity and water-stress of crops growing under arid environments.
