Search

Monte Carlo techniques have been used to evaluate the statistical and systematic uncertainties in the helium abundances derived from extragalactic H~II regions. The helium abundance is sensitive to several physical parameters associated with the H~II region. In this work, we introduce Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods to efficiently explore the parameter space and determine the helium abundance, the physical parameters, and the uncertainties derived from observations of metal poor nebulae. Experiments with synthetic data show that the MCMC method is superior to previous implementations (based on flux perturbation) in that it is not affected by biases due to non-physical parameter space. The MCMC analysis allows a detailed exploration of degeneracies, and, in particular, a false minimum that occurs at large values of optical depth in the He~I emission lines. We demonstrate that introducing the electron temperature derived from the [O~III] emission lines as a prior, in a very conservative manner, produces negligible bias and effectively eliminates the false minima occurring at large optical depth. We perform a frequentist analysis on data from several "high quality" systems. Likelihood plots illustrate degeneracies, asymmetries, and limits of the determination. In agreement with previous work, we find relatively large systematic errors, limiting the precision of the primordial helium abundance for currently available spectra., Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures

The starburst phenomenon can shape the evolution of the host galaxy and the surrounding intergalactic medium. The extent of the evolutionary impact is partly determined by the duration of the starburst, which has a direct correlation with both the amount of stellar feedback and the development of galactic winds, particularly for smaller mass dwarf systems. We measure the duration of starbursts in twenty nearby, ongoing, and "fossil" starbursts in dwarf galaxies based on the recent star formation histories derived from resolved stellar population data obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. Contrary to the shorter times of 3-10 Myr often cited, the starburst durations we measure range from 450 - 650 Myr in fifteen of the dwarf galaxies and up to 1.3 Gyr in four galaxies; these longer durations are comparable to or longer than the dynamical timescales for each system. The same feedback from massive stars that may quench the flickering SF does not disrupt the overall burst event in our sample of galaxies. While five galaxies present fossil bursts, fifteen galaxies show ongoing bursts and thus the final durations may be longer than we report here for these systems. One galaxy shows a burst that has been ongoing for only 20 Myr; we are likely seeing the beginning of a burst event in this system. Using the duration of the starbursts, we calculate that the bursts deposited 10^(53.9)-10^(57.2) ergs of energy into the interstellar medium through stellar winds and supernovae and produced 3%-26% of the host galaxy's mass., Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures

Low-resolution, mid-infrared Spitzer/IRS spectral maps are presented for three nearby, low-metallicity dwarf galaxies (NGC 55, NGC 3109 and IC 5152) for the purpose of examining the spatial distribution and variation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission. The sample straddles a metallicity of 12+log(O/H)~8.0, a transition point below which PAH intensity empirically drops and the character of the interstellar medium changes. We derive quantitative radiances of PAH features and atomic lines on both global and spatially-resolved scales. The Spitzer spectra, combined with extensive ancillary data from the UV through the mid-infrared, allow us to examine changes in the physical environments and in PAH feature radiances down to a physical scale of 50 pc. We discuss correlations between various PAH emission feature and atomic line radiances. The (6.2 micron)/(11.3 micron), (7.7 micron)/(11.3 micron), (8.6 micron)/(11.3 micron), (7.7 micron)/(6.2 micron), and (8.6 micron)/(6.2 micron) PAH radiance ratios are found to be independent of position across all three galaxies, although the ratios do vary from galaxy to galaxy. As seen in other galaxies, we find no variation in the grain size distribution as a function of local radiation field strength. Absolute PAH feature intensities as measured by a ratio of PAH/(24 micron) radiances are seen to vary both positionally within a given galaxy, and from one galaxy to another when integrated over the full observed extent of each system. We examine direct comparisons of CC mode PAH ratios (7.7 micron)/(6.2 micron) and (8.6 micron)/(6.2 micron) to the mixed (CC/CH) mode PAH ratio (7.7 micron)/(11.3 micron). We find little variation in either mode, and no difference in trends between modes. We use archival HST observations of resolved stellar populations to derive the star formation histories (SFHs) of 18 nearby starburst dwarf galaxies. In this first paper we present the observations, color-magnitude diagrams, and the SFHs of the 18 starburst galaxies, based on a homogeneous approach to the data reduction, differential extinction, and treatment of photometric completeness. We adopt a star formation rate (SFR) threshold normalized to the average SFR of the individual system as a metric for classifying starbursts in SFHs derived from resolved stellar populations. This choice facilitates finding not only currently bursting galaxies but also "fossil" bursts increasing the sample size of starburst galaxies in the nearby (D<8 Mpc) universe. Thirteen of the eighteen galaxies are experiencing ongoing bursts and five galaxies show fossil bursts. From our reconstructed SFHs, it is evident that the elevated SFRs of a burst are sustained for hundreds of Myr with variations on small timescales. A long >100 Myr temporal baseline is thus fundamental to any starburst definition or identification method. The longer lived bursts rule out rapid "self-quenching" of starbursts on global scales. The bursting galaxies' gas consumption timescales are shorter than the Hubble time for all but one galaxy confirming the short-lived nature of starbursts based on fuel limitations. Additionally, we find the strength of the H{\alpha} emission usually correlates with the CMD based SFR during the last 4-10 Myr. However, in four cases, the H{\alpha} emission is significantly less than what is expected for models of starbursts; the discrepancy is due to the SFR changing on timescales of a few Myr. The inherently short timescale of the H{\alpha} emission limits identifying galaxies as starbursts based on the current characteristics which may or may not be representative of the recent SFH of a galaxy., Comment: 53 pages, 11 figures

(Abridged) We present the results of a new search for variable stars in the Local Group (LG) isolated dwarf galaxy IC1613, based on 24 orbits of F475W and F814W photometry from the ACS camera onboard the HST. We detected 259 candidate variables in this field, of which only 13 (all of them bright Cepheids) were previously known. Out of the confirmed variables, we found 90 RR Lyrae stars, 49 classical Cepheids (including 36 new discoveries), and 38 eclipsing binary stars for which we could determine a period. The RR Lyrae include 61 fundamental (RRab) and 24 first-overtone (RRc) pulsators, and 5 pulsating in both modes simultaneously (RRd). As for the majority of LG dwarfs, the mean periods of the RRab and RRc (0.611 and 0.334 day, respectively) as well as the fraction of overtone pulsators (f_c=0.28) place this galaxy in the intermediate regime between the Oosterhoff types. From their position on the period-luminosity diagram and light-curve morphology, we can unambiguously classify 25 and 14 Cepheids as fundamental and first-overtone mode pulsators, respectively. Another two are clearly second-overtone Cepheids, the first ones to be discovered beyond the Magellanic Clouds. We estimate the distance to IC1613 using various methods based on the photometric and pulsational properties of the Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars. The values we find are in very good agreement with each other and with previous estimates based on independent methods. When corrected to a common reddening of E(B-V)=0.025 and true LMC distance modulus of (m-M)_{LMC,0}=18.515+-0.085, we find that all the distance determinations from the literature converge to a common value of (m-M)_0=24.400+-0.014 (statistical), or 760 kpc., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures, in emulateapj format. Tests of big bang nucleosynthesis and early universe cosmology require precision measurements for helium abundance determinations. However, efforts to determine the primordial helium abundance via observations of metal poor H II regions have been limited by significant uncertainties. This work builds upon previous work by providing an updated and extended program in evaluating these uncertainties. Procedural consistency is achieved by integrating the hydrogen based reddening correction with the helium based abundance calculation, i.e., all physical parameters are solved for simultaneously. We include new atomic data for helium recombination and collisional emission based upon recent work by Porter et al. and wavelength dependent corrections to underlying absorption are investigated. The set of physical parameters has been expanded here to include the effects of neutral hydrogen collisional emission. Because of a degeneracy between the solutions for density and temperature, the precision of the helium abundance determinations is limited. Also, at lower temperatures (T \lesssim 13,000 K) the neutral hydrogen fraction is poorly constrained resulting in a larger uncertainty in the helium abundances. Thus the derived errors on the helium abundances for individual objects are larger than those typical of previous studies. The updated emissivities and neutral hydrogen correction generally raise the abundance. From a regression to zero metallicity, we find Y_p as 0.2561 \pm 0.0108, in broad agreement with the WMAP result. Tests with synthetic data show a potential for distinct improvement, via removal of underlying absorption, using higher resolution spectra. A small bias in the abundance determination can be reduced significantly and the calculated helium abundance error can be reduced by \sim 25%., Comment: 51 pages, 13 figures

We present Halpha narrow-band imaging of 17 dwarf irregular galaxies (dIs) in the nearby Centaurus A Group. Although all large galaxies of the group have a current or recent enhanced star formation episode, the dIs have normal star formation rates and do not contain a larger fraction of dwarf starbursts than other nearby groups. Relative distances between dIs and larger galaxies of the group can be computed in 3D since most of them have now fairly accurately known distances. We find that the dI star formation rates do not depend on local environment, and in particular they do not show any correlation with the distance of the dI to the nearest large galaxy of the group. There is a clear morphology-density relation in the Centaurus A Group, similarly to the Sculptor and Local Groups, in the sense that dEs/dSphs tend to be at small distances from the more massive galaxies of the group, while dIs are on average at larger distances. We find four transition dwarfs in the Group, dwarfs that show characteristics of both dE/dSphs and dIs, and which contain cold gas but no current star formation. Interestingly the transition dwarfs have an average distance to the more massive galaxies which is intermediate between those of the dEs/dSphs and dIs, and which is quite large: 0.54 +- 0.31 Mpc. This large distance poses some difficulty for the most popular scenarios proposed for transforming a dI into a dE/dSph (ram-pressure with tidal stripping or galaxy harassment). If the observed transition dwarfs are indeed missing links between dIs and dE/dSphs, their relative isolation makes it less likely to have been produced by these mechanisms. We propose that an inhomogeneous IGM containing higher density clumps would be able to ram-pressure stripped the dIs at such large distances., Comment: 57 pages, 10 fi5gures

We have derived nebular abundances for 10 dwarf galaxies belonging to the M81 Group, including several galaxies which do not have abundances previously reported in the literature. For each galaxy, multiple H \ii regions were observed with GMOS-N at the Gemini Observatory in order to determine abundances of several elements (oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, neon, and argon). For seven galaxies, at least one H \ii region had a detection of the temperature sensitive [OIII] $\lambda$4363 line, allowing a "direct" determination of the oxygen abundance. No abundance gradients were detected in the targeted galaxies and the observed oxygen abundances are typically in agreement with the well known metallicity-luminosity relation. However, three candidate "tidal dwarf" galaxies lie well off this relation, UGC 5336, Garland, and KDG 61. The nature of these systems suggests that UGC 5336 and Garland are indeed recently formed systems, whereas KDG 61 is most likely a dwarf spheroidal galaxy which lies along the same line of sight as the M81 tidal debris field. We propose that these H \ii regions formed from previously enriched gas which was stripped from nearby massive galaxies (e.g., NGC 3077 and M81) during a recent tidal interaction., Comment: 37 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ. We use deep HST/ACS F555W and F814W photometry of resolved stars in the M81 Group dwarf irregular galaxy Ho II to study the hypothesis that the holes identified in the neutral ISM (HI) are created by stellar feedback. From the deep photometry, we construct color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) and measure the star formation histories (SFHs) for stars contained in HI holes from two independent holes catalogs, as well as select control fields, i.e., similar sized regions that span a range of HI column densities. Converting the recent SFHs into stellar feedback energies, we find that enough energy has been generated to have created all holes. However, the required energy is not always produced over a time scale that is less than the estimated kinematic age of the hole. The combination of the CMDs, recent SFHs, and locations of young stars shows that the stellar populations inside HI holes are not coherent, single-aged, stellar clusters, as previously suggested, but rather multi-age populations distributed across each hole. From a comparison of the modeled and observed integrated magnitudes, and the locations and energetics of stars inside of HI holes, we propose a potential new model: a viable mechanism for creating the observed HI holes in Ho II is stellar feedback from multiple generations of SF spread out over tens or hundreds of Myr, and thus, the concept of an age for an HI hole is intrinsically ambiguous. We further find that \halpha and 24 micron emission, tracers of the most recent star formation, do not correlate well with the positions of the HI holes. The ACS Nearby Galaxy Survey Treasury (ANGST) is a systematic survey to establish a legacy of uniform multi-color photometry of resolved stars for a volume-limited sample of nearby galaxies (D<4 Mpc). The survey volume encompasses 69 galaxies in diverse environments, including close pairs, small & large groups, filaments, and truly isolated regions. The galaxies include a nearly complete range of morphological types spanning a factor of ~10^4 in luminosity and star formation rate. The survey data consists of images taken with ACS on HST, supplemented with archival data and new WFPC2 imaging taken after the failure of ACS. Survey images include wide field tilings covering the full radial extent of each galaxy, and single deep pointings in uncrowded regions of the most massive galaxies in the volume. The new wide field imaging in ANGST reaches median 50% completenesses of m_F475W=28.0 mag, m_F606W=27.3 mag, and m_F814W=27.3 mag, several magnitudes below the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB). The deep fields reach magnitudes sufficient to fully resolve the structure in the red clump. The resulting photometric catalogs are publicly accessible and contain over 34 million photometric measurements of >14 million stars. In this paper we present the details of the sample selection, imaging, data reduction, and the resulting photometric catalogs, along with an analysis of the photometric uncertainties (systematic and random), for both the ACS and WFPC2 imaging. (abridged) We present the first study of the variable star populations in the isolated dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph) Cetus and Tucana. Based on Hubble Space Telescope images obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys in the F475W and F814W bands, we identified 180 and 371 variables in Cetus and Tucana, respectively. The vast majority are RR Lyrae stars. In Cetus we also found three anomalous Cepheids, four candidate binaries and one candidate long-period variable (LPV), while six anomalous Cepheids and seven LPV candidates were found in Tucana. Of the RR Lyrae stars, 147 were identified as fundamental mode (RRab) and only eight as first-overtone mode (RRc) in Cetus, with mean periods of 0.614 and 0.363 day, respectively. In Tucana we found 216 RRab and 82 RRc giving mean periods of 0.604 and 0.353 day. These values place both galaxies in the so-called Oosterhoff Gap, as is generally the case for dSph. We calculated the distance modulus to both galaxies using different approaches based on the properties of RRab and RRc, namely the luminosity-metallicity and period-luminosity-metallicity relations, and found values in excellent agreement with previous estimates using independent methods: (m-M)_{0,Cet}=24.46+-0.12 and (m-M)_{0,Tuc}=24.74+-0.12, corresponding to 780+-40 kpc and 890+-50 kpc. We also found numerous RR Lyrae variables pulsating in both modes simultaneously (RRd): 17 in Cetus and 60 in Tucana. Tucana is, after Fornax, the second dSph in which such a large fraction of RRd (~17%) has been observed. We present the first determination of the radial velocities and metallicities of 78 red giant stars in the isolated dwarf irregular galaxy WLM. Observations of the calcium II triplet in these stars were made with FORS2 at the VLT-UT2 in two separated fields of view in WLM, and the [Fe/H] values were conformed to the Carretta & Gratton (1997) metallicity scale. The mean metallicity is <[Fe/H]> = -1.27 +/- 0.04 dex, with a standard deviation of 0.37. We find that the stars in the inner field are more metal rich by [Fe/H] =0.30 +/- 0.06 dex. These results are in agreement with previous photometric studies that found a radial population gradient, as well as the expectation of higher metallicities in the central star forming regions. Age estimates using Victoria-Regina stellar models show that the youngest stars in the sample (< 6 Gyr) are more metal rich by [Fe/H] = 0.32 +/- 0.08 dex. These stars also show a lower velocity dispersion at all elliptical radii compared to the metal-poor stars. Kinematics for the whole red giant sample suggest a velocity gradient approximately half that of the gas rotation curve, with the stellar component occupying a thicker disk decoupled from the HI rotation plane. Taken together, the kinematics, metallicities, and ages in our sample suggest a young metal-rich, and kinematically cold stellar population in the central gas-rich regions of WLM, surrounded by a separate dynamically hot halo of older, metal poor stars., Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables. We present the third and final part of a census of Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars in Local Group dwarf irregular galaxies. Papers I and II presented the results for WLM and IC 1613. Included here are Phoenix, LGS 3, DDO 210, Leo A, Pegasus dIrr, and Sextans A. Spitzer photometry at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8 are presented, along with a more thorough treatment of background galaxy contamination than was presented in papers I and II. We find that at least a small population of completely optically obscured AGB stars exists in each galaxy, regardless of the galaxy's metallicity, but that higher-metallicity galaxies tend to harbor more stars with slight IR excesses. The optical incompleteness increases for the redder AGB stars, in line with the expectation that some AGB stars are not detected in the optical due to large amounts of extinction associated with in situ dust production. Overall, there is an underrepresentation of 30% - 40% in the optical AGB within the 1 sigma errors for all of the galaxies in our sample. This undetected population is large enough to affect star formation histories derived from optical color-magnitude diagrams. As measured from the [3.6] - [4.5] color excesses, we find average stellar mass-loss rates ranging from 3.1E-7 - 6.6E-6 solar masses per year, and integrated galaxy mass-loss rates ranging from 4.4E-5 - 1.4E-3 solar masses per year. The integrated mass-loss rate is sufficient to sustain the current star formation rate in only LGS 3 and DDO 210, requiring either significant non-dusty mass loss or gas accretion in Phoenix, Leo A, Pegasus dIrr, Sextans A, WLM, and IC 1613 if they are to maintain their status as gas-rich galaxies., Comment: 25 pages, 17 figures, 9 tables, Accepted for publication in ApJ; updated affiliation for Boyer

The duration of a starburst is a fundamental parameter affecting the evolution of galaxies yet, to date, observational constraints on the durations of starbursts are not well established. Here we study the recent star formation histories (SFHs) of three nearby dwarf galaxies to rigorously quantify the duration of their starburst events using a uniform and consistent approach. We find that the bursts range from ~200 - ~400 Myr in duration resolving the tension between the shorter timescales often derived observationally with the longer timescales derived from dynamical arguments. If these three starbursts are typical of starbursts in dwarf galaxies, then the short timescales (3 - 10 Myr) associated with starbursts in previous studies are best understood as "flickering" events which are simply small components of the larger starburst. In this sample of three nearby dwarfs, the bursts are not localized events. All three systems show bursting levels of star formation in regions of both high and low stellar density. The enhanced star formation moves around the galaxy during the bursts and covers a large fraction of the area of the galaxy. These massive, long duration bursts can significantly affect the structure, dynamics, and chemical evolution of the host galaxy and can be the progenitors of "superwinds" that drive much of the recently chemically enriched material from the galaxy into the intergalactic medium., Comment: 41 pages, 14 figures, ApJ, Accepted

Based on deep imaging from the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the Hubble Space Telescope, we present new evidence that stellar feedback created a ~ 1 kpc supergiant HI shell (SGS) and triggered star formation (SF) around its rim in the M81 Group dwarf irregular galaxy IC 2574. Using photometry of the resolved stars from the HST images, we measure the star formation history of a region including the SGS, focusing on the past 500 Myr, and employ the unique properties of blue helium burning stars to create a movie of SF in the SGS. We find two significant episodes of SF inside the SGS from 200 - 300 Myr and ~ 25 Myr ago. Comparing the timing of the SF events to the dynamic age of the SGS and the energetics from the HI and SF, we find compelling evidence that stellar feedback is responsible for creating the SGS and triggering secondary SF around its rim., Comment: 5 Pages, 4 Figures, ApJ Letter, Accepted

We present observations and analysis of nine dwarf irregular galaxies (dIs) in the M81 Group taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The nine galaxy sample (the Garland, M81 Dwarf A, DDO 53, Ho IX, Ho I, DDO 165, NGC 2366, Ho II, and IC 2574) spans 6 magnitudes in luminosity, a factor of 1000 in current star formation rate, and 0.5 dex in metallicity. Here we use color-magnitude diagrams of resolved stellar populations to study the star formation histories (SFHs) of these galaxies. We divide the sample into faint and bright galaxies, with a dividing line of M_${B}$ = -15, and then analyze the similarities and differences in the SFHs, birthrate parameters, fraction of stars formed per time interval, and spatial distribution of stellar components. Comparing these parameters as a function of luminosity, we find only minor differences in SF characteristics. We extend our comparison to select dIs in the Local Group (LG), and find only minor differences in SF parameters. The fraction of stars formed per time interval for an average M81 Group and LG dI is consistent with a constant SFH. However, individual galaxies can show significant departures from a constant SFH. Thus, we find this result underlines the importance of stochastic SF in dIs. We also compare possible formation scenarios of the less luminous and candidate tidal dwarfs in the M81 Group. The SFHs and the lack of an overdensity of associated red stars suggest that the Garland and Ho IX are not dIs and are potentially tidal dwarf galaxies. The paucity of observed dwarf galaxies in the Local Group relative to the abundance of predicted dark matter halos remains one of the greatest puzzles of the LCDM paradigm. Solving this puzzle now requires not only matching the numbers of objects but also understanding the details of their star formation histories. We present a summary of such histories derived from the HST data using the color-magnitude diagram fitting method. To reduce observational uncertainties, we condense the data into five cumulative parameters -- the fractions of stellar mass formed in the last 1, 2, 5, and 10 Gyr, and the mean stellar age. We interpret the new data with a phenomenological model based on the mass assembly histories of dark matter halos and the Schmidt law of star formation. The model correctly predicts the radial distribution of the dwarfs and the fractions of stars formed in the last 5 and 10 Gyr. However, in order to be consistent with the observations, the model requires a significant amount of recent star formation in the last 2 Gyr. Within the framework of our model, this prolonged star formation can be achieved by adding a stochastic variation in the density threshold of the star formation law. The model results are not sensitive to late gas accretion, the slope of the Schmidt law, or the details of cosmic reionization. A few discrepancies still remain: our model typically predicts too large stellar masses, only a modest population of ultra-faint dwarfs, and a small number of dwarfs with anomalously young stellar populations. We present a study of the radial distribution of RR Lyrae variables, which present a range of photometric and pulsational properties, in the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Tucana. We find that the fainter RR Lyrae stars, having a shorter period, are more centrally concentrated than the more luminous, longer period RR Lyrae variables. Through comparison with the predictions of theoretical models of stellar evolution and stellar pulsation, we interpret the fainter RR Lyrae stars as a more metal-rich subsample. In addition, we show that they must be older than about 10 Gyr. VLA and Parkes 64 m radiotelescope 21-cm observations of the starburst dwarf galaxy NGC 5253 reveal a multi-component non-axisymmetric HI distribution. The component associated with the stellar body shows evidence for a small amount of rotational support aligned with the major axis, in agreement with optically measured kinematics and consistent with the small galaxian mass. Approximately 20-30% of the HI emission is associated with a second component, an HI "plume" extending along the optical minor axis to the southeast. We consider outflow, inflow, and tidal origins for this feature. Outflow appears improbable, inflow is a possibility, and tidal debris is most consistent with the observations. These observations also reveal a filamentary third component that includes an 800 pc diameter HI shell or bubble to the west of the nucleus, coinciding with an Halpha shell. The mass of HI in the shell may be as large as ~4x10^6 Msun. This large mass, coupled with the lack of expansion signatures in the neutral and ionized gas (v<30 km/s), suggests that this feature may be an example of a starburst-blown bubble stalled by interaction with a massive neutral envelope. Many other HI kinematic features closely resemble those seen in Halpha emission from the ionized gas, supporting the interpretation of neutral and ionized gas outflow at velocities of ~30 km/s. Recent VLA observations pointed at dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies in the M 81 group reveal a hitherto hidden population of extremely low mass (~1e5 Msol) HI clouds with no obvious optical counterparts. We have searched 10 fields in the M81 group totalling 2.2 square degree, both targeting known dwarf spheroidal galaxies and blank fields around the central triplet. Our observations show that the new population of low-mass HI clouds appears to be confined to a region toward the South-East of the central triplet (at distances of ~100 kpc from M 81). Possible explanations for these free-floating HI clouds are that they are related to the dSphs found to the South-East of M 81, that they belong to the galaxies of the M 81 triplet (equivalent to HVCs), that they are of primordial nature and provide fresh, unenriched material falling into the M 81 group, or that they are tidal debris from the 3-body interaction involving M 81-M 82-NGC 3077. We present Spitzer Space Telescope IRAC photometry of the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy IC 1613. We compare our 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 micron photometry with broadband optical photometry and find that the optical data do not detect 43% and misidentify an additional 11% of the total AGB population, likely because of extinction caused by circumstellar material. Further, we find that a narrowband optical carbon star study of IC 1613 detects 50% of the total AGB population and only considers 18% of this population in calculating the carbon to M-type AGB ratio. We derive an integrated mass-loss rate from the AGB stars of 0.2-1.0 x 10^(-3) solar masses per year and find that the distribution of bolometric luminosities and mass-loss rates are consistent with those for other nearby metal-poor galaxies. The Local Group galaxy Phoenix has the properties of a dwarf spheroidal galaxy, but an adjacent HI cloud has been found to be at the same radial velocity as the stars. The proximity suggests that this cloud is associated with the most recent ($\le 100$ Myr) star formation in Phoenix. We have obtained relatively high sensitivity and high resolution HI imaging with the VLA with the goal of distinguishing between different processes for displacing the gas from the galaxy. Due to the outer curvature of the HI cloud, it appears that expulsion from the galaxy by winds from supernovae is more likely than ram-pressure stripping. The isolation of the galaxy makes tidal stripping highly unlikely. Using a star formation history constructed from HST imaging, we construct a simple kinematic model which implies that the HI cloud is still gravitationally bound to the galaxy. Gas which is expelled from the centers of dwarf galaxies but which remains gravitationally bound may explain the episodic star formation observed in several dwarfs. We present Spitzer/IRAC observations at 3.6 and 4.5 microns along with optical data from the Local Group Galaxies Survey to investigate the evolved stellar population of the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy WLM. These observations provide a nearly complete census of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. We find 39% of the infrared-detected AGB stars are not detected in the optical data, even though our 50% completeness limit is three magnitudes fainter than the red giant branch tip. An additional 4% of the infrared-detected AGBs are misidentified in the optical, presumably due to reddening by circumstellar dust. We also compare our results with those of a narrow-band optical carbon star survey of WLM, and find the latter study sensitive to only 18% of the total AGB population. We detect objects with infrared fluxes consistent with them being mass-losing AGB stars, and derive a present day total mass-loss rate from the AGB stars of 0.7-2.4 x 10^(-3) solar masses per year. The distribution of mass-loss rates and bolometric luminosities of AGBs and red supergiants are very similar to those in the LMC and SMC and the empirical maximum mass-loss rate observed in the LMC and SMC is in excellent agreement with our WLM data., Comment: Accepted by ApJ, 34 pages, 13 figures, version with high-resolution figures available at: http://webusers.astro.umn.edu/~djackson/

We report 4.5 micron luminosities for 27 nearby (D < 5 Mpc) dwarf irregular galaxies measured with the Spitzer Infrared Array Camera. We have constructed the 4.5 micron luminosity-metallicity (L-Z) relation for 25 dwarf galaxies with secure distance and interstellar medium oxygen abundance measurements. The 4.5 micron L-Z relation is 12+log(O/H) = (5.78 +/- 0.21) + (-0.122 +/- 0.012) M_[4.5], where M_[4.5] is the absolute magnitude at 4.5 micron. The dispersion in the near-infrared L-Z relation is smaller than the corresponding dispersion in the optical L-Z relation. The subsequently derived stellar mass-metallicity M-Z relation is 12+log(O/H) = (5.65 +/- 0.23) + (0.298 +/- 0.030) log Mstar. and extends the SDSS M-Z relation to lower mass by about 2.5 dex. We find that the dispersion in the M-Z relation is similar over five orders of magnitude in stellar mass, and that the relationship between stellar mass and interstellar medium metallicity is similarly tight from high-mass to low-mass systems. We find a larger scatter at low mass in the relation between effective yield and total baryonic mass. In fact, there are a few dwarf galaxies with large yields, which is difficult to explain if galactic winds are ubiquitous in dwarf galaxies. The low scatter in the L-Z and M-Z relationships are difficult to understand if galactic superwinds or blowout are responsible for the low metallicities at low mass or luminosity. We present Spitzer Space Telescope 4.5 and 8.0 micron imaging of 15 Local Group and nearby dwarf galaxies. Our sample spans a range of more than one dex in nebular metallicity and over three orders of magnitude in current star formation rate, allowing us to examine the dependence of the diffuse 8 micron emission, originating from hot dust and PAHs, on these parameters. We detect prominent diffuse 8 micron emission in four of the most luminous galaxies in the sample (IC 1613, IC 5152, NGC 55, and NGC 3109), low surface brightness emission from four others (DDO 216, Sextans A, Sextans B, WLM), and no diffuse emission from the remaining objects. We observe general correlations of the diffuse 8 micron emission with both the current star formation rate and the nebular metallicity of the galaxies in our sample. However, we also see exceptions to these correlations that suggest other processes may also have a significant effect on the generation of hot dust/PAH emission. These systems all have evidence for old and intermediate age star formation, thus the lack of diffuse 8 micron emission cannot be attributed to young galaxy ages. Also, we find that winds are unlikely to explain the paucity of diffuse 8 micron emission, since high resolution imaging of the neutral gas in these objects show no evidence of blowout. Additionally, we propose the lack of diffuse 8 micron emission in low-metallicity systems may be due to the destruction of dust grains by supernova shocks, assuming the timescale to regrow dust grains and PAH molecules is long compared to the destruction timescale. To test the existence of a possible radial gradient in oxygen abundances within the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822, we have obtained optical spectra of 19 nebulae with the EFOSC2 spectrograph on the 3.6-m telescope at ESO La Silla. The extent of the measured nebulae spans galactocentric radii in the range between 0.05 kpc and 2 kpc (over four exponential scale lengths). In five H II regions (Hubble I, Hubble V, Kalpha, Kbeta, KD28e), the temperature-sensitive [O III] 4363 emission line was detected, and direct oxygen abundances were derived. Oxygen abundances for the remaining H II regions were derived using bright-line methods. The oxygen abundances for three A-type supergiant stars are slightly higher than nebular values at comparable radii. Linear least-square fits to various subsets of abundance data were obtained. When all of the measured nebulae are included, no clear signature is found for an abundance gradient. A fit to only newly observed H II regions with [O III] 4363 detections yields an oxygen abundance gradient of -0.14 +/- 0.07 dex/kpc. The gradient becomes slightly more significant (-0.16 +/- 0.05 dex/kpc) when three additional H II regions with [O III] 4363 measurements from the literature are added. Assuming no abundance gradient, we derive a mean nebular oxygen abundance 12+log(O/H) = 8.11 +/- 0.10 from [O III] 4363 detections in the five H II regions from our present data; this mean value corresponds to [O/H] = -0.55., Comment: Accepted, Ap.J.; 25 pages (AASTeX 5.2; emulateapj) with 14 figures. We report preliminary results of a project to homogeneously measure star formation histories for the majority of Local Group dwarf galaxies, based on archival WFPC2 observations. For the dwarf spheroidal and elliptical galaxies, we find that the more luminous systems all show extended star formation episodes, while the less luminous systems typically formed most of their stars over ten Gyr ago. Irregular galaxies show no comparable trend. We find that a galaxy's classification as an irregular or spheroidal is entirely explained by its star formation within the past Gyr or less. We present the first resolved study of the radio continuum properties of I Zw 18, the dwarf galaxy with the lowest known nebular metal abundance in the local universe. New Very Large Array radio continuum images at 20 and 3.6 cm are compared to various Hubble Space Telescope images, and we find a striking morphological similarity between high-resolution H alpha and short wavelength radio continuum emission, especially in the H alpha shell in the northwest region. We separate thermal and nonthermal components of the emission, and find a large synchrotron halo surrounding the galaxy. Comparison between H alpha and X-band fluxes suggests that the emission at 3.6 cm is dominated by thermal processes; an additional synchrotron component dominates the flux at 20 cm and produces a modest fraction of the detected flux at 3.6 cm. The fluxes of three of the four major emission peaks show a mix of thermal and nonthermal processes, while one shows a nearly flat spectral index. The strong synchrotron component argues for active star formation throughout the disk for at least the last ~ 30 Myr. These sensitive observations provide a new, detailed view of the nature of radio continuum emission in the very low metallicity interstellar medium. We obtained new optical spectra of 13 H II regions in WLM with EFOSC2; oxygen abundances are derived for nine H II regions. The temperature-sensitive [O III] 4363 emission line was measured in two bright H II regions HM7 and HM9. The direct oxygen abundances for HM7 and HM9 are 12+log(O/H) = 7.72 +/- 0.04 and 7.91 +/- 0.04, respectively. We adopt a mean oxygen abundance of 12+log(O/H) = 7.83 +/- 0.06. This corresponds to [O/H] = -0.83 dex, or 15% of the solar value. In H II regions where [O III] 4363 was not measured, oxygen abundances derived with bright-line methods are in general agreement with direct values of the oxygen abundance to an accuracy of about 0.2 dex. In general, the present measurements show that the H II region oxygen abundances agree with previous values in the literature. The nebular oxygen abundances are marginally consistent with the mean stellar magnesium abundance ([Mg/H] = -0.62). However, there is still a 0.62 dex discrepancy in oxygen abundance between the nebular result and the A-type supergiant star WLM15 ([O/H] = -0.21). Non-zero reddening values derived from Balmer line ratios were found in H II regions near a second H I peak. We present new FUSE spectroscopy of the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 625. These observations probe multiple phases of the interstellar medium, including the coronal, ionized, neutral and molecular gas. This nearby (D = 3.9 +/- 0.2 Mpc) system shows a clear detection of outflowing coronal gas as traced by OVI 1032 Angstrom absorption. The centroid of the OVI profile is blueshifted with respect to the galaxy systemic velocity by ~ 30 km/sec, suggesting a low-velocity outflow. The implied OVI velocity extent is found to be 100 +/- 20 km/sec, which is fully consistent with the detected HI outflow velocity found in radio synthesis observations. We detect multiple lines of diffuse H2 absorption from the ISM of NGC 625; this is one of only a few extragalactic systems with FUSE detections of H2 lines in the Lyman and Werner bands. We find a potential abundance offset between the neutral and nebular gas that exceeds the errors on the derived column densities. Since such an offset has been found in multiple dwarf galaxies, we discuss the implications of a lower-metallicity halo surrounding the central star forming regions of dwarf galaxies. We present Australia Telescope Compact Array mosaic HI imaging of the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy WLM. We find an integrated flux of 149 Jy km/s and a total HI mass of 3.2 x 10^7 solar masses. The major axis of the HI is aligned with the stellar component of the galaxy. The overall HI distribution is relatively smooth at our resolution and has a double peaked central core. One of these peaks is aligned with a region found to have extinction that is internal to WLM and we take this as possible evidence of a large molecular gas complex in the southern half of the galaxy. The other HI peak is in close proximity to the brightest HII regions. WLM's overall velocity field is consistent with rigid body rotation. A rotation curve is derived, and we find a total dynamical mass of 3.00 x 10^8 solar masses. We also performed a wide field search, 38 arcminutes in radius, for HI companions or evidence of recent interactions (e.g., tidal tails), and found no detections to an HI mass limit of M_HI > 8.4 x 10^5 solar masses., Comment: 23 pages, 8 jpg figures, Scheduled to appear in AJ, September, 2004. (Shortened version) We report optical spectroscopy of 16 H II regions in NGC 1705 and [O III] 4363 detections for the first time in five H II regions. The resulting mean oxygen abundance derived directly from measured electron temperatures is 12+log(O/H) = 8.21 +/- 0.05, which corresponds to [O/H] = -0.45, or 35% of the solar value. There are no significant spatial inhomogeneities in [O III] 4363 oxygen abundances from H II regions at a radius approximately 10 arcsec from the super star cluster. In H II regions where [O III] 4363 was not measured, oxygen abundances derived with bright-line methods (accurate only to 0.2 dex) are in agreement with direct values of the oxygen abundance. Faint narrow He II 4686 emission is found in two H II regions, but the implied contribution from O^+3 to the total oxygen abundance is only 0.01 dex. Interestingly, the nitrogen-to-oxygen abundance ratio in the ionized H II gas agrees with the value for the neutral H I, even though the metallicity of the neutral gas may be a factor of six lower than that of the ionized gas. This may be indicative of low-metallicity gas in the halo of the galaxy. Extinction values, A_V, derived from observed Balmer line ratios along lines of sight to H II regions are in the range between zero and 0.9 mag. Currently there are two significantly different observational determinations of the primordial helium abundance, and, if only statistical errors in He4 abundance determinations are considered, the discrepancies between the observational determinations and the value favored by the WMAP results are significant. Here we examine in detail some likely sources of systematic uncertainties which may resolve the differences between the two determinations. We conclude that the observational determination of the primordial helium abundance is completely limited by systematic errors and that these systematic errors have not been fully accounted for in any published observational determination of the primordial helium abundance. In principle, the observed metal-poor HII region spectra should be analyzed in a non-parametric way, such that the HII region physical conditions and the helium abundance are derived solely from the relative flux ratios of the helium and hydrogen emission lines. In practice, there are very few HII region spectra with the quality that allow this, so that most analyses depend on assumed ranges or relationships between physical parameters, resulting in parametric solutions with underestimated error bars. A representative result of our analysis yields Y_p = 0.249 \pm 0.009. However, given that most of the spectra analyzed to date do not significantly constrain the primordial helium abundance, we argue in favor a range of allowed values of 0.232 le Y_p le 0.258. We present new multi-frequency radio continuum imaging of the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 625 obtained with the Very Large Array. Data at 20, 6, and 3.6 cm reveal global continuum emission dominated by free-free emission, with only mild synchrotron components. Each of the major HII regions is detected; the individual spectral indices are thermal for the youngest regions (showing strongest H Alpha emission) and nonthermal for the oldest. We do not detect any sources that appear to be associated with deeply embedded, dense, young clusters, though we have discovered one low-luminosity, obscured source that has no luminous optical counterpart and which resides in the region of highest optical extinction. Since NGC 625 is a Wolf-Rayet galaxy with strong recent star formation, these radio properties suggest that the youngest star formation complexes have not yet evolved to the point where their thermal spectra are significantly contaminated by synchrotron emission. The nonthermal components are associated with regions of older star formation that have smaller ionized gas components. These results imply a range of ages of the HII regions and radio components that agrees with our previous resolved stellar population analysis, where an extended burst of star formation has pervaded the disk of NGC 625 over the last ~ 50 Myr. We compare the nature of radio continuum emission in selected nearby dwarf starburst and Wolf-Rayet galaxies, demonstrating that thermal radio continuum emission appears to be more common in these systems than in typical HII galaxies with less recent star formation and more evolved stellar clusters., Comment: ApJ, in press; 27 pages, 5 figures. We present new VLA C-configuration HI imaging of the Lyman Alpha-emitting starburst galaxies Tol 1924-416 and IRAS 08339+6517. The effective resolution probes neutral gas structures larger than 4.7 kpc in Tol 1924-416, and larger than 8.1 kpc in IRAS 08339+6517. Both systems are revealed to be tidally interacting: Tol 1924-416 with ESO 338-IG04B (6.6 arcminutes = 72 kpc minimum separation), and IRAS 08339+6517 with 2MASX J08380769+6508579 (2.4 arcminutes = 56 kpc minimum separation). The HI emission is extended in these systems, with tidal tails and debris between the target galaxies and their companions. Since Lyman Alpha emission has been detected from both of these primary systems, these observations suggest that the geometry of the ISM is one of the factors affecting the escape fraction of Lyman Alpha emission from starburst environments. We present new multi-configuration HI aperture synthesis imaging of the nearby dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 625 obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. Total HI column density images show gas well-aligned with the optical major axis, and low-column density HI extending to > 6 optical scale lengths. The HI velocity field, on the other hand, is highly disturbed, with neutral gas at nearly all detected velocities within the central region. After considering various interpretations, we find that a blowout scenario most accurately describes the data. Since at our resolution we do not detect any large evacuated holes in the HI disk, we interpret this blowout to be the result of the extended (both spatially and temporally) star formation event which NGC 625 has undergone in the last 100 Myr. This is one of the clearest examples of HI outflow detected in a dwarf galaxy. We find no obvious external trigger for this extended star formation event. We detect strong radio continuum emission from the largest HII regions; comparing to our HST and ground-based H Alpha fluxes suggests either appreciable amounts of extinction toward the star formation regions, or the contribution of non-thermal sources to the radio continuum luminosity., Comment: ApJ, in press; 30 pages, 6 figures. Investigation of spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey reveals the presence of a region of ionized gas of >2 degrees diameter centered approximately at alpha = 10^h 37^m delta = -00^o 18' (J2000) (Galactic coordinates l=248, b=+48). [OIII] 4959,5007 emission is particularly strong and emission from H-alpha and [NII] 6548,6583 is also detectable over a substantial area on the sky. The combination of emission line ratios, the close to zero heliocentric radial velocity and the morphology of the structure are consistent with an identification as a very nearby planetary nebula. The proximity of the hot, DO white dwarf PG1034+001 further strengthens this interpretation. The object is: i) the largest planetary nebula on the sky, ii) certainly closer than any planetary nebula other than Sh 2--216, iii) the first to be unambiguously associated with a DO white dwarf. A parallax distance for PG1034+001 would establish whether the structure is in fact the closest, and one of the physically largest, planetary nebula known., Comment: 12 pages including 4 figures. New HST/WFPC2 imaging of the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 625 is presented. These data, 80% complete to V and I magnitudes of 26.0 and 25.3, respectively, allow us to study the recent star formation history of NGC 625. We derive a tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) distance modulus of 27.95+/-0.07, corresponding to a distance of 3.89+/-0.22 Mpc, and a location on the far side of the Sculptor Group. NGC 625 has a well-defined radial stellar population gradient, evidenced by a central concentration of young MS stars and an RGB/AGB ratio that increases with galactocentric distance. The prominent AGB is very red, and RGB stars are detected far from the central star forming regions. Using H Alpha and H Beta narrow band imaging and previous optical spectroscopy we identify substantial and varying internal extinction (A_V = 0.0 to 0.6 mag) associated with the central active star formation regions. To better understand the effects of internal extinction on the analysis of young stellar populations, synthetic models are presented which, for the first time, examine and account for this effect. Using the luminous blue helium burning stars, we construct a simple model of the recent (< 100 Myr) star formation in which an elevated but declining star formation rate has been present over this entire period. This is at odds with the presence of spectroscopic W-R features in the major star formation region which imply a short duration (<= 5 Myr) for the recent starburst. This suggests that starbursts displaying W-R features are not necessarily all of a short duration. We present deep HST WFPC2 imaging of the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy IC 1613. The photometry is the deepest to date for an isolated dwarf irregular galaxy. The resulting color-magnitude diagram (CMD) is analyzed using three different methods to derive a star formation history (SFH). All three find an enhanced star formation rate (SFR), from 3 to 6 Gyr ago, and similar age-metallicity relationships (AMR). A comparison of the newly observed outer field with an earlier studied central field of IC 1613 shows that the SFR in the outer field has been significantly depressed during the last Gyr. This implies that the optical scale length of the galaxy has been decreasing with time and that comparison of galaxies at intermediate redshift with present day galaxies should take this effect into account. We find strong similarities between IC 1613 and the more distant Milky Way dSph companions in that all are dominated by star formation at intermediate ages. In particular, the SFH and AMR for IC 1613 and Leo I are indistinguishable. This implies that dIrr galaxies cannot be distinguished from dSphs by their intermediate age stellar populations. This type of a SFH may also be evidence for slower or suppressed early star formation in dwarf galaxies due to photoionization after the reionization of the universe by background radiation. Assuming that IC 1613 is typical of a dIrr evolving in isolation, since most of the star formation occurs at intermediate ages, these dwarf systems cannot be responsible for the fast chemical enrichment of the IGM which is seen at high redshift. There is no evidence for any large amplitude bursts of star formation in IC 1613, and we find it highly unlikely that analogs of IC 1613 have contributed to the excess of faint blue galaxies in existing galaxy redshift surveys., Comment: 32 pages, including 1 table and 17 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal October 10, 2003 issue

We present a measurement of the star formation history of Sextans A, based on WFPC2 photometry that is 50% complete to V=27.5 (M_V ~+ 1.9) and I=27.0. The star formation history and chemical enrichment history have been measured through modeling of the CMD. We find evidence for increased reddening in the youngest stellar populations and an intrinsic metallicity spread at all ages. Sextans A has been actively forming stars at a high rate for ~ 2.5 Gyr ago, with an increased rate beginning ~ 0.1 Gyr ago. We find a non-zero number of stars older than 2.5 Gyr, due to the limited depth of the photometry, a detailed star formation history at intermediate and older ages has considerable uncertainties. The mean metallicity was found to be [M/H] ~- 1.4 over the measured history of the galaxy, with most of the enrichment happening at ages of at least 10 Gyr. We also find that an rms metallicity spread of 0.15 dex at all ages allows the best fits to the observed CMD. We revisit our determination of the recent star formation history (age <= 0.7 Gyr) using BHeB stars and find good agreement for all but the last 25 Myr, a discrepancy resulting primarily from different distances used in the two analyses and the differential extinction in the youngest populations. This indicates that star formation histories determined solely from BHeB stars should be confined to CMD regions where no contamination from reddened MS stars is present., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures accepted for publication in Astronomical Journal

We have identified 82 short-period variable stars in Sextans A from deep WFPC2 observations. All of the periodic variables appear to be short-period Cepheids, with periods as small as 0.8 days for fundamental-mode Cepheids and 0.5 days for first-overtone Cepheids. These objects have been used, along with measurements of the RGB tip and red clump, to measure a true distance modulus to Sextans A of (m-M)_0 = 25.61 +/- 0.07, corresponding to a distance of d = 1.32 +/- 0.04 Mpc. Comparing distances calculated by these techniques, we find that short-period Cepheids (P < 2 days) are accurate distance indicators for objects at or below the metallicity of the SMC. As these objects are quite numerous in low-metallicity star-forming galaxies, they have the potential for providing extremely precise distances throughout the Local Group. We have also compared the relative distances produced by other distance indicators. We conclude that calibrations of RR Lyraes, the RGB tip, and the red clump are self-consistent, but that there appears to be a small dependence of long-period Cepheid distances on metallicity. We present new H-alpha narrow band imaging of the HII regions in eight Sculptor Group dwarf irregular (dI) galaxies. Comparing the Sculptor Group dIs to the Local Group dIs, we find that the Sculptor Group dIs have, on average, lower values of SFR when normalized to either galaxy luminosity or gas mass (although there is considerable overlap between the two samples). The properties of ``transition'' (dSph/dIrr) galaxies in Sculptor and the Local Group are also compared and found to be similar. The transition galaxies are typically among the lowest luminosities of the gas rich dwarf galaxies. Relative to the dwarf irregular galaxies, the transition galaxies are found preferentially nearer to spiral galaxies, and are found nearer to the center of the mass distribution in the local cloud. While most of these systems are consistent with normal dI galaxies which currently exhibit temporarily interrupted star formation, the observed density-morphology relationship (which is weaker than that observed for the dwarf spheroidal galaxies) indicates that environmental processes such as ``tidal stirring'' may play a role in causing their lower SFRs., Comment: 35 pages, 10 figures, accepted for Feb 2003 AJ, companion to astro-ph/0211172

Using the CTIO 4-m telescope, we have obtained optical spectra of HII regions in five Sculptor Group dwarf irregular galaxies. We derive oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur abundances from the HII region spectra. Oxygen abundances are derived via three different methods (the ``direct'' method, the empirical method guided by photoionization modeling of McGaugh (1991), and the purely empirical method of Pilyugin (2000)) and are compared. Significant systematic differences are found between the three methods, and we suggest that a recalibration of the empirical abundance scale is required. The N/O ratio for the metal-poor dI ESO 473-G24 of log (N/O) = -1.43 +/- 0.03 lies well above the plateau of log (N/O) = -1.60 +/- 0.02 found by Izotov & Thuan (1999) for a collection of metal-poor blue compact galaxies. This shows that not all galaxies with 12 + log (O/H) < 7.6 have identical elemental abundance ratios, and this implies that the Izotov & Thuan scenario for low metallicity galaxies is not universal. Measurements of the HII regions in NGC 625 yield log (N/O) = -1.25. Assuming N production by intermediate mass stars, this relatively high N/O ratio may be indicative of a long quiescent period prior to the recent active burst of star formation. The oxygen abundances in the Sculptor Group dIs are in good agreement with the relationship between metallicity and luminosity observed in the Local Group dIs. The Sculptor Group dIs, in general, lie closer to the simple closed box model evolutionary path than the Local Group dIs. The higher gas contents, lower average star formation rates, and closer resemblance to closed box evolution could all be indicative of evolution in a relatively low density environment., Comment: 40 pages, 9 figures, accepted for Feb 2003 AJ

We report ISO SWS infrared spectroscopy of the H II region Hubble V in NGC 6822 and the blue compact dwarf galaxy I Zw 36. Observations of Br alpha, [S III] at 18.7 and 33.5 microns, and [S IV] at 10.5 microns are used to determine ionic sulfur abundances in these H II regions. There is relatively good agreement between our observations and predictions of S^+3 abundances based on photoionization calculations, although there is an offset in the sense that the models overpredict the S^+3 abundances. We emphasize a need for more observations of this type in order to place nebular sulfur abundance determinations on firmer ground. The S/O ratios derived using the ISO observations in combination with optical data are consistent with values of S/O, derived from optical measurements of other metal-poor galaxies. We present a new formalism for the simultaneous determination of the temperature, temperature fluctuations, and abundances in a nebula, given a mix of optical and infrared observed line ratios. The uncertainties in our ISO measurements and the lack of observations of [S III] lambda 9532 or lambda 9069 do not allow an accurate determination of the amplitude of temperature fluctuations for Hubble V and I Zw 36. We consider the effect of optical depth of the 2 ^{3}S level on the nebular recombination spectrum of He I for a spherically symmetric nebula with no systematic velocity gradients. These calculations, using many improvements in atomic data, can be used in place of the earlier calculations of Robbins. We give representative Case B line fluxes for UV, optical, and IR emission lines over a range of physical conditions: T=5000-20000 K, n_{e}=1-10^{8} cm^{-3}, and tau_{3889}=0-100. A FORTRAN program for calculating emissivities for all lines arising from quantum levels with n < 11 is also available from the authors. We present a special set of fitting formulae for the physical conditions relevant to low metallicity extragalactic H II regions: T=12,000-20,000 K, n_{e}=1-300 cm^{-3}, and tau_{3889} < 2.0. For this range of physical conditions, the Case B line fluxes of the bright optical lines 4471 A, 5876 A, and 6678 A, are changed less than 1%, in agreement with previous studies. However, the 7065 A corrections are much smaller than those calculated by Izotov & Thuan based on the earlier calculations by Robbins. This means that the 7065 A line is a better density diagnostic than previously thought. We present new WFPC2 narrow band imaging of the blue compact dwarf galaxy I Zw 18, which is host to the lowest-metallicity HII regions known. Images at H-alpha and H-beta are combined with archival broad band images to allow the study of the ionized gas distribution and morphology. Analysis of the H-alpha/H-beta flux ratio reveals significant enhancements in some areas of both the ``Northwest'' and ``Southeast'' regions of the galaxy, with ratios elevated to levels as high as 3.4. The H-alpha/H-beta ratio varies considerably with position throughout the galaxy. Comparing this distribution with the stellar distribution indicates that the regions of enhanced H-alpha/H-beta ratio are not due to the effects of either collisional excitation or underlying stellar absorption, and therefore are most likely interpreted as the presence of dust. This dust has an estimated mass of (2-5)x10^3 solar masses, which is consistent with the IRAS far-IR non-detection. Under the assumption that dust traces the presence of molecular gas, these results suggest that the molecular component of the ISM of I Zw 18, which is needed to fuel its active star formation, is also very clumpy. We present the results of high spatial resolution HI synthesis observations of six blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies. Optically, the selected galaxies have smooth, symmetric isophotes, and thus are the most likely of the BCD class to fade into an object morphologically similar to a dwarf elliptical when the current starburst ends. The neutral gas in all six galaxies appears to be rotationally supported, however, indicating that true morphological transformation from a BCD to a dE will require significant loss of angular momentum. Based on the observed neutral gas dynamics of these and other BCDs, it is unlikely that present-day BCDs will evolve directly into dwarf ellipticals after a starburst phase. We present WFPC2 VI photometry of a field in the halo of IC 1613, finding 13 RR Lyraes and 11 Cepheids. Our photometry of the red giant branch tip and red clump is used to derive distances to IC 1613, which are consistent with each other and with distances based on the variable stars. We compare these values with similarly-measured distances for the Magellanic Clouds, and are able to measure metallicity dependencies of the RR Lyrae and Cepheid distances by requiring consistent relative distance measurements from the four techniques. For metallicities of [Fe/H] = -1.3 (RR Lyraes) and -1.0 (Cepheids), we find a relatively steep slope of 0.34 +/- 0.20 magnitudes per dex for the RR Lyraes and a shallow slope of -0.07 +/- 0.16 mag/dex for the Cepheids, both values within the range of theoretical and empirical results in the literature. We find that a dependence of the red clump absolute magnitude on age, in addition to metallicity, is required to produce self-consistent relative distances between IC 1613 and the Magellanic Clouds. Adopting such a red clump calibration and self-consistent calibrations for the other three distance indicators, we find that the distances to all three objects are in excellent agreement. Our best distance modulus to IC 1613 is mu_0 = 24.31 +/- 0.06, corresponding to a distance of 730 +/- 20 kpc.
