Decision trees (DTs) epitomize the ideal of interpretability of machine learning (ML) models. The interpretability of decision trees motivates explainability approaches by so-called intrinsic interpretability, and it is at the core of recent proposals for applying interpretable ML models in high-risk applications. The belief in DT interpretability is justified by the fact that explanations for DT predictions are generally expected to be succinct. Indeed, in the case of DTs, explanations correspond to DT paths. Since decision trees are ideally shallow, and so paths contain far fewer features than the total number of features, explanations in DTs are expected to be succinct, and hence interpretable. This paper offers both theoretical and experimental arguments demonstrating that, as long as interpretability of decision trees equates with succinctness of explanations, then decision trees ought not be deemed interpretable. The paper introduces logically rigorous path explanations and path explanation redundancy, and proves that there exist functions for which decision trees must exhibit paths with arbitrarily large explanation redundancy. The paper also proves that only a very restricted class of functions can be represented with DTs that exhibit no explanation redundancy. In addition, the paper includes experimental results substantiating that path explanation redundancy is observed ubiquitously in decision trees, including those obtained using different tree learning algorithms, but also in a wide range of publicly available decision trees. The paper also proposes polynomial-time algorithms for eliminating path explanation redundancy, which in practice require negligible time to compute. Thus, these algorithms serve to indirectly attain irreducible, and so succinct, explanations for decision trees.

Decision trees (DTs) embody interpretable classifiers. DTs have been advocated for deployment in high-risk applications, but also for explaining other complex classifiers. Nevertheless, recent work has demonstrated that predictions in DTs ought to be explained with rigorous approaches. Although rigorous explanations can be computed in polynomial time for DTs, their size may be beyond the cognitive limits of human decision makers. This paper investigates the computation of {\delta}-relevant sets for DTs. {\delta}-relevant sets denote explanations that are succinct and provably precise. These sets represent generalizations of rigorous explanations, which are precise with probability one, and so they enable trading off explanation size for precision. The paper proposes two logic encodings for computing smallest {\delta}-relevant sets for DTs. The paper further devises a polynomial-time algorithm for computing {\delta}-relevant sets which are not guaranteed to be subset-minimal, but for which the experiments show to be most often subset-minimal in practice. The experimental results also demonstrate the practical efficiency of computing smallest {\delta}-relevant sets.

In this work we derive global estimates for viscosity solutions to fully nonlinear elliptic equations under relaxed structural assumptions on the governing operator which are weaker than convexity and oblique boundary conditions and under suitable assumptions on the dat. Our approach makes use of geometric tangential methods, which consists of importing "fine regularity estimates" from a limiting profile, i.e., the Recession operator, associated with the original second order one via compactness and stability procedures. As a result, we devote a special attention to the borderline scenario. In such a setting, we prove that solutions enjoy BMO type estimates for their second derivatives. In the end, as another application of our findings, we obtain Hessian estimates to obstacle type problems under oblique boundary conditions and no convexity assumptions, which may have their own mathematical interest. A density result in a suitable class of viscosity solutions will be also addressed.

To improve the traveling experience, researchers have been analyzing the role of attitudes in travel behavior modeling. Although most researchers use closed-ended surveys, the appropriate method to measure attitudes is debatable. Topic Modeling could significantly reduce the time to extract information from open-ended responses and eliminate subjective bias, thereby alleviating analyst concerns. Our research uses Topic Modeling to extract information from open-ended questions and compare its performance with closed-ended responses. Furthermore, some respondents might prefer answering questions using their preferred questionnaire type. So, we propose a modeling framework that allows respondents to use their preferred questionnaire type to answer the survey and enable analysts to use the modeling frameworks of their choice to predict behavior. We demonstrate this using a dataset collected from the USA that measures the intention to use Autonomous Vehicles for commute trips. Respondents were presented with alternative questionnaire versions (open- and closed- ended). Since our objective was also to compare the performance of alternative questionnaire versions, the survey was designed to eliminate influences resulting from statements, behavioral framework, and the choice experiment. Results indicate the suitability of using Topic Modeling to extract information from open-ended responses; however, the models estimated using the closed-ended questions perform better compared to them. Besides, the proposed model performs better compared to the models used currently. Furthermore, our proposed framework will allow respondents to choose the questionnaire type to answer, which could be particularly beneficial to them when using voice-based surveys.

Models with three Higgs doublets (3HDM) are the source of much recent activity, for they are key components of many solutions to the problems of the Standard Model; from extra sources of CP violation to Dark Matter candidates. We compute explicitly the theoretical bounds for all symmetry-constrained 3HDM arising from the perturbative unitarity of two-to-two scattering amplitudes. In addition, we propose a method based on principal minors that foregoes diagonalization and which is preferable in all models (not only 3HDM) dealing with large scattering matrices.

We consider the four-point correlator of the stress-energy tensor in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM, to leading order in inverse powers of the central charge, but including all order corrections in $1/\lambda$. This corresponds to the AdS version of the Virasoro-Shapiro amplitude to all orders in the small $\alpha'$/low energy expansion. Using dispersion relations in Mellin space, we derive an infinite set of sum rules. These sum rules strongly constrain the form of the amplitude, and determine all coefficients in the low energy expansion in terms of the CFT data for heavy string operators, in principle available from integrability. For the first set of corrections to the flat space amplitude we find a unique solution consistent with the results from integrability and localisation., Comment: 32 pages. Published version

Lichens, organisms resulting from a symbiosis between a fungus and an algae, are frequently used as age estimators, especially in recent geological deposits and archaeological structures, using the correlation between lichen size and age. Current non-automated manual lichen and measurement (with ruler, calipers or using digital image processing tools) is a time-consuming and laborious process, especially when the number of samples is high. This work presents a workflow and set of image acquisition and processing tools developed to efficiently identify lichen thalli in flat rocky surfaces, and to produce relevant lichen size statistics (percentage cover, number of thalli, their area and perimeter). The developed workflow uses a regular digital camera for image capture along with specially designed targets to allow for automatic image correction and scale assignment. After this step, lichen identification is done in a flow comprising assisted image segmentation and classification based on interactive foreground extraction tool (GrabCut) and automatic classification of images using Simple Linear Iterative Clustering (SLIC) for image segmentation and Support Vector Machines (SV) and Random Forest classifiers. Initial evaluation shows promising results. The manual classification of images (for training) using GrabCut show an average speedup of 4 if compared with currently used techniques and presents an average precision of 95\%. The automatic classification using SLIC and SVM with default parameters produces results with average precision higher than 70\%. The developed system is flexible and allows a considerable reduction of processing time, the workflow allows it applicability to data sets of new lichen populations.

172. On Deciding Feature Membership in Explanations of SDD & Related Classifiers

When reasoning about explanations of Machine Learning (ML) classifiers, a pertinent query is to decide whether some sensitive features can serve for explaining a given prediction. Recent work showed that the feature membership problem (FMP) is hard for $\Sigma_2^P$ for a broad class of classifiers. In contrast, this paper shows that for a number of families of classifiers, FMP is in NP. Concretely, the paper proves that any classifier for which an explanation can be computed in polynomial time, then deciding feature membership in an explanation can be decided with one NP oracle call. The paper then proposes propositional encodings for classifiers represented with Sentential Decision Diagrams (SDDs) and for other related propositional languages. The experimental results confirm the practical efficiency of the proposed approach.

Medical image segmentation is inherently uncertain. For a given image, there may be multiple plausible segmentation hypotheses, and physicians will often disagree on lesion and organ boundaries. To be suited to real-world application, automatic segmentation systems must be able to capture this uncertainty and variability. Thus far, this has been addressed by building deep learning models that, through dropout, multiple heads, or variational inference, can produce a set - infinite, in some cases - of plausible segmentation hypotheses for any given image. However, in clinical practice, it may not be practical to browse all hypotheses. Furthermore, recent work shows that segmentation variability plateaus after a certain number of independent annotations, suggesting that a large enough group of physicians may be able to represent the whole space of possible segmentations. Inspired by this, we propose a simple method to obtain soft labels from the annotations of multiple physicians and train models that, for each image, produce a single well-calibrated output that can be thresholded at multiple confidence levels, according to each application's precision-recall requirements. We evaluated our method on the MICCAI 2021 QUBIQ challenge, showing that it performs well across multiple medical image segmentation tasks, produces well-calibrated predictions, and, on average, performs better at matching physicians' predictions than other physicians., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, 3 tables

The Android mining sandbox approach consists in running dynamic analysis tools on a benign version of an Android app and recording every call to sensitive APIs. Later, one can use this information to (a) prevent calls to other sensitive APIs (those not previously recorded) or (b) run the dynamic analysis tools again in a different version of the app -- in order to identify possible malicious behavior. Although the use of dynamic analysis for mining Android sandboxes has been empirically investigated before, little is known about the potential benefits of combining static analysis with the mining sandbox approach for identifying malicious behavior. As such, in this paper we present the results of two empirical studies: The first is a non-exact replication of a previous research work from Bao et al., which compares the performance of test case generation tools for mining Android sandboxes. The second is a new experiment to investigate the implications of using taint analysis algorithms to complement the mining sandbox approach in the task to identify malicious behavior. Our study brings several findings. For instance, the first study reveals that a static analysis component of DroidFax (a tool used for instrumenting Android apps in the Bao et al. study) contributes substantially to the performance of the dynamic analysis tools explored in the previous work. The results of the second study show that taint analysis is also practical to complement the mining sandboxes approach, improve the performance of the later strategy in at most 28.57%., Comment: 31 pages, 6 figures.
