152. HD 164492C: a rapidly rotating, Hα-bright, magnetic early B star associated with a 12.5 d spectroscopic binary.

Abstract

We employ high-resolution spectroscopy and spectropolarimetry to derive the physical properties and magnetic characteristics of the multiple systemHD164492C, located in the young open cluster M20. The spectrum reveals evidence of three components: a broad-lined early B star (HD 164492C1), a narrow-lined early B star (HD 164492C2) and a late B star (HD 164492C3). Components C2 and C3 exhibit significant (>100 km s-1) bulk radial velocity variations with a period of 12.5351(7) d that we attribute to eccentric binary motion around a common centreof- mass. Component C1 exhibits no detectable radial velocity variations. Using constraints derived from modelling the orbit of the C2+C3 binary and from synthesis of the combined spectrum, we determine the approximate physical characteristics of the components. We conclude that a coherent evolutionary solution consistent with the published age of M20 implies a distance to M20 of 0.9 ± 0.2 kpc, corresponding to the smallest published values. We confirm the detection of a strong magnetic field in the combined spectrum. The field is clearly associated with the broad- lined C1 component of the system. Repeated measurement of the longitudinal magnetic field allows the derivation of the rotation period of the magnetic star, Prot =1.369 86(6) d.We derive the star's magnetic geometry, finding i = 63 ± 6°, β = 33 ± 6° and a dipole polar strength Bd = 7.9-1.0 +1.2 kG. Strong emission - varying according to the magnetic period - is detected in the Hα profile. Abstract

Recent Australian research on Indigenous sentencing primarily explores whether disparities in sentencing outcomes exist. Little is known about how judges perceive or refer to Indigenous defendants and their histories, and how they interpret the circumstances of Indigenous defendants in justifying their sentencing decisions. Drawing on the ‘focal concerns’ approach, this study presents a narrative analysis of a sample of judges’ sentencing remarks for Indigenous and non-Indigenous criminal defendants convicted in South Australia’s Higher Courts. The analysis found that the sentencing stories of Indigenous and non-Indigenous offenders differed in ways that possibly reduced assessments of blameworthiness and risk for Indigenous defendants.

Abstract

Schools have seldom been examined by scholars in studies of organizational sites. Yet schools and the educational context in which they operate, offer potentially important insights into how organizations use rhetoric in their communications to persuade audiences and leverage advantage in the marketplace. This study, which utilises rhetorical analysis to examine the persuasive, yet ambiguous strategies used in 65 school prospectuses in Australia, revealed six strategies consistently used by schools to leverage competitive advantage and persuade internal and external audiences: identification, juxtapositioning, bolstering or self-promotion, partial reporting, selfexpansion and reframing or reversal. As well as illustrating how schools operate in the context of marketisation and privatization discourses in 21st century education, the organizational theory and methods utilised for the research demonstrates how rhetorical strategies draw on, as well as reproduce, socio-political and cultural discourses around economic and social privilege.

Abstract

Cosmetic enhancement technologies have been subject to extended discussion in sociological literature. Botox, however, seems to have been mostly sidelined in this discussion in favour of more ‘extreme’ forms of cosmetic enhancement, such as those performed under general anaesthetic. In this paper, we suggest the need to further examine Botox as a sociological issue. We do this by highlighting some of the disparities and parallels that Botox shares with the existing literature on cosmetic enhancement technologies.

Abstract

There has been an extended engagement with how young people experience policing, with a focus on the intersection between policing and indigeneity, ethnicity, gender, and social class. Interestingly, sexuality and/or gender diversity has been almost completely overlooked, both nationally and internationally. This paper reports on LGBT youth service providers’ accounts about police and LGBT young people interactions. It overviews the outcomes of semi-structured interviews with key LGBT youth service providers in different regions of Brisbane, Queensland. As the first qualitative engagement with these issues from the perspective of service providers, it highlights not only how LGBT young people experience policing, but also how service providers need to ‘work the system’ of policing to produce the best outcomes for LGBT young people.

Abstract

This paper uses the virtual world Second Life (as Web 2.0 environment) to discuss how sociological theory is a relevant tool for innovation in the area of games design as a methodological strategy. Via the theories of Erving Goffman’s interaction order the paper illustrates how micro studies of online interaction demonstrate active accounts of membership and complex interactivity. In order to achieve this, the paper outlines a methodological tool to assist in the application of micro sociology to Web 2.0 environments that accounts for the multiple dimensions of participation within the digital field.

Abstract

We present our analysis of HD 35502 based on high- and medium-resolution spectropolarimetric observations. Our results indicate that the magnetic B5IVsnp star is the primary component of a spectroscopic triple system and that it has an effective temperature of 18.4 ± 0.6 kK, a mass of 5.7 ± 0.6M☉, and a polar radius of 3.0--0.5+1.1 R☉. The two secondary components are found to be essentially identical A-type stars for which we derive effective temperatures (8.9 ± 0.3 kK), masses (2.1 ± 0.2M☉), and radii (2.1 ± 0.4R☉). We infer a hierarchical orbital configuration for the system in which the secondary components form a tight binary with an orbital period of 5.668 66(6) d that orbits the primary component with a period of over 40 yr. Least-Squares Deconvolution profiles reveal Zeeman signatures in Stokes V indicative of a longitudinal magnetic field produced by the B star ranging from approximately --4 to 0 kG with a median uncertainty of 0.4 kG. These measurements, along with the line variability produced by strong emission in Hα, are used to derive a rotational period of 0.853 807(3) d. We find that the measured v sin i = 75 ± 5 kms-1 of the B star then implies an inclination angle of the star's rotation axis to the line of sight of 24-10+6°. Assuming the Oblique Rotator Model, we derive the magnetic field strength of the B star's dipolar component (14-3+9 kG) and its obliquity (63 ± 13 deg). Furthermore, we demonstrate that the calculated Alfvén radius (41-6+17 R*) and Kepler radius (2.1-0.7+0.4 R*) place HD 35502's central B star well within the regime of centrifugal magnetosphere-hosting stars. Contains fulltext : 50018.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access), Mucopolysaccharidosis IIIC (MPS IIIC, or Sanfilippo C syndrome) is a lysosomal storage disorder caused by the inherited deficiency of the lysosomal membrane enzyme acetyl-coenzyme A: alpha -glucosaminide N-acetyltransferase (N-acetyltransferase), which leads to impaired degradation of heparan sulfate. We report the narrowing of the candidate region to a 2.6-cM interval between D8S1051 and D8S1831 and the identification of the transmembrane protein 76 gene (TMEM76), which encodes a 73-kDa protein with predicted multiple transmembrane domains and glycosylation sites, as the gene that causes MPS IIIC when it is mutated. Four nonsense mutations, 3 frameshift mutations due to deletions or a duplication, 6 splice-site mutations, and 14 missense mutations were identified among 30 probands with MPS IIIC. Functional expression of human TMEM76 and the mouse ortholog demonstrates that it is the gene that encodes the lysosomal N-acetyltransferase and suggests that this enzyme belongs to a new structural class of proteins that transport the activated acetyl residues across the cell membrane.

Item does not contain fulltext, We have analyzed acid sphingomyelinase (SMPD1; E.C. 3.1.4.12) gene mutations in four Niemann-Pick disease (NPD) type A and B patients of Turkish ancestry and in three patients of Dutch origin. Among four NPD type A patients we found two homozygotes for the g.1421C > T (H319Y) and g.3714T > C (Y537H) mutations and two compound heterozygotes, one for the g.3337T > C (F463S) and g.3373C > T (P475L) mutations and the other for the g.84delC (G29fsX74) and g.1208A > C (S248R) mutations. One of the type B patients was homozygous for the g.2629C>T (P371S) mutation. The last two type B patients were homozygotes for the common g.3927_3929delCGC (R608del) mutation. The G29fsX74, S248R, H319Y, P371S, F463S, P475L and Y537H SMPD1 mutations are all novel and were verified by PCR/RFLP and/or ARMS. All of the identified mutations are likely to be rare or private, with the exception of R608del which is prevalent among NPD type B patients from the North-African Maghreb region. Geographical and/or social isolation of the affected families are likely contributing factors for the high number of homozygotes in our group.

More than 20 years ago, the 'danger theory' was proposed which explains why potent immune responses with no microbial components are elicited against tissue transplants, injuries, tumours and autoimmune diseases. It states that the immune system can distinguish between dangerous and innocuous endogenous signals. In response to trauma or other types of tissue and cell damage, certain molecules that function inside the cell are released or secreted from damaged or dying cells. Such mechanisms initiate an immune response in the absence of infection. These immunostimulatory molecules were named damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs). In this article, we will review the available data on the influence of select DAMPs on lung cancer cells and tumour microenvironments.
