We define a notion of target space entanglement entropy. Rather than partitioning the base space on which the theory is defined, we consider partitions of the target space. This is the physical case of interest for first-quantized theories, such as worldsheet string theory. We associate to each subregion of the target space a suitably chosen subalgebra of observables A . The entanglement entropy is calculated as the entropy of the density matrix restricted to A . As an example, we illustrate our framework by computing spatial entanglement in first-quantized many-body quantum mechanics. The algebra A is chosen to reproduce the entanglement entropy obtained by embedding the state in the fixed particle sub-sector of the second-quantized Hilbert space. We present a simple, new method for the 1-loop renormalization of integrable σ-models. By treating equations of motion and Bianchi identities on an equal footing, we derive 'universal' formulae for the 1-loop on-shell divergences, generalizing case-by-case computations in the literature. Given a choice of poles for the classical Lax connection, the divergences take a theory-independent form in terms of the Lax currents (the residues of the poles), assuming a 'completeness' condition on the zero-curvature equations. We compute these divergences for a large class of theories with simple poles in the Lax connection. We also show that ℤT coset models of 'pure-spinor' type and their recently constructed η- and λ-deformations are 1-loop renormalizable, and 1-loop scale-invariant when the Killing form vanishes. We study the renormalization of an N = 1 supersymmetric Lifshitz sigma model in three dimensions. The sigma model exhibits worldvolume anisotropy in space and time around the high-energy z = 2 Lifshitz point, such that the worldvolume is endowed with a foliation structure along a preferred time direction. In curved backgrounds, the target-space geometry is equipped with two distinct metrics, and the interacting sigma model is power-counting renormalizable. At low energies, the theory naturally flows toward the relativistic sigma model where Lorentz symmetry emerges. In the superspace formalism, we develop a heat kernel method that is covariantized with respect to the bimetric target-space geometry, using which we evaluate the one-loop beta-functions of the Lifshitz sigma model. This study forms an essential step toward a thorough understanding of the quantum critical supermembrane as a candidate high-energy completion of the relativistic supermembrane. Abstract We reconsider the complete solution of the linear TBA equation describing the energy density of finite density states in the O(N) nonlinear sigma models by the Wiener-Hopf method. We keep all perturbative and non-perturbative contributions and introduce a running coupling in terms of which all asymptotic series appearing in the problem can be represented as pure power series without logs. We work out the first non-perturbative contribution in the O(3) case and show that (presumably because of the instanton corrections) resurgence theory fails in this example. Using the relation of the O(3) problem to the coaxial disks capacitor problem we work out the leading non-perturbative terms for the latter and show that (at least to this order) resurgence theory, in particular the median resummation prescription, gives the correct answer. We demonstrate this by comparing the Wiener-Hopf results to the high precision numerical solution of the original integral equation.

Abstract We present a model of self-interacting dark matter based on QCD-like theories and inspired by the proximity of a 0(980 ± 20) to the K K ¯ $$ K\overline{K} $$ (990) threshold. Dark matter is comprised of dark pions which self-scatter via the σ resonance close to the ππ threshold. While the linear sigma model serves as a qualitative guide, a fully unitary description of the scattering in the strongly coupled regime is given by effective range theory. The introduction of a kinetically mixed dark photon allows the dark pion to either freeze-out or -in. We study the viable parameter space which explains the observed relic abundance while evading all current constraints. Searches for dark matter self interactions at different scales, (in)direct detection signals, and (in)visibly-decaying dark photons will test this model in the near future.

Abstract We construct a family of type IIB string backgrounds that are deformations of AdS3 × S3 × T4 with a “squashed” AdS3 × S3 metric supported by a combination of NSNS and RR fluxes. They have global SU(1, 1) × SU(2) symmetry, regular curvature, constant dilaton and preserve 8 supercharges. Upon compactification to 4 dimensions they reduce to N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 2 supersymmetric AdS2 × S2 solutions with electric and magnetic Maxwell fluxes. These type IIB supergravity solutions can be found from the undeformed AdS3 × S3 × T4 background by a combination of T-dualities and S-duality. In contrast to T-duality, S-duality transformations of a type IIB supergravity background do not generally preserve the classical integrability of the corresponding Green-Schwarz superstring sigma model. Nevertheless, we show that integrability is preserved in the present case. Indeed, we find that these backgrounds can be obtained, up to T-dualities, from an integrable inhomogeneous Yang-Baxter deformation (with unimodular Drinfel’d-Jimbo R-matrix) of the original AdS3 × S3 supercoset model.

Abstract In this paper we study three-dimensional orbifolds by 2-groups with a trivially-acting one-form symmetry group BK. These orbifolds have a global two-form symmetry, and so one expects that they decompose into (are equivalent to) a disjoint union of other three-dimensional theories, which we demonstrate. These theories can be interpreted as sigma models on 2-gerbes, whose formal structures reflect properties of the orbifold construction.

Abstract We explore extensions of the double copy to massive theories and find a new cubic theory with a local double copy. We consider the nonlinear sigma model and the special galileon theory, massless versions of which are known to be related through the double copy. We show that by performing a Kaluza-Klein reduction of these theories from five dimensions down to four, a double copy relation exists between the resulting massive four-dimensional scalar field theories. This requires the vanishing contribution of new galileon terms arising in high dimensions. We further explore if other interactions that do not arise from a dimensional reduction of the nonlinear sigma model could be double copied and find a new cubic interaction which satisfies the BCJ relations up to 5-point amplitudes.

Abstract In this work we consider the higher dimensional Skyrme model, with spatial dimension d > 3, focusing on its BPS submodels and their corresponding features. To accommodate the cases with a higher topological degree, B ≥ 1, a modified generalized hedgehog ansatz is used where we assign an integer n i for each rotational plane, resulting in a topological degree that proportional to product of these integers. It is found via BPS Lagrangian method that there are only two possible BPS submodels for this spherically symmetric ansatz which shall be called as BPS Skyrme model and scale-invariant model. The properties of the higher dimensional version of both submodels are studied and it is found that the BPS Skyrmions with B ≥ 1 exist in the first submodel but there is only B = 1 BPS Skyrmion in the second submodel. We also study the higher dimensional version of self-duality conditions in terms of strain tensor eigenvalues and find that, in general, the scale-invariant model has a stronger self-duality condition than the BPS Skyrme model.

Abstract This work employs the spectral reconstruction approach of ref. [1] to determine an inclusive rate in the 1 + 1 dimensional O(3) non-linear σ-model, analogous to the QCD part of e + e − → hadrons. The Euclidean two-point correlation function of the conserved current j is computed using Monte Carlo lattice field theory simulations for a variety of spacetime volumes and lattice spacings. The spectral density of this correlator is related to the inclusive rate for j → X in which all final states produced by the external current are summed. The ill-posed inverse problem of determining the spectral density from the correlation function is made tractable through the determination of smeared spectral densities in which the desired density is convolved with a set of known smearing kernels of finite width ϵ. The smooth energy dependence of the underlying spectral density enables a controlled ϵ → 0 extrapolation in the inelastic region, yielding the real-time inclusive rate without reference to individual finite-volume energies or matrix elements. Systematic uncertainties due to cutoff effects and residual finite-volume effects are estimated and taken into account in the final error budget. After taking the continuum limit, the results are consistent with the known analytic rate to within the combined statistical and systematic errors. Above energies where 20-particle states contribute, the overall precision is sufficient to discern the four-particle contribution to the spectral density.

Abstract We search for integrable boundary conditions and their geometric interpretation as D-branes, in models constructed as generalized λ-deformations of products of group- and coset-spaces. Using the sigma-model approach, we find that all the conformal brane geometries known in the literature for a product of WZW models solve the corresponding boundary conditions, thus persisting as integrable branes along the RG flows of our sigma-models. They consist of the well known G-conjugacy classes, twisted G-conjugacy classes by a permutation automorphism (permutation branes) and generalized permutation branes. Subsequently, we study the properties of the aforementioned brane geometries, especially of those embedded in the backgrounds interpolating between the UV and IR fixed points.

Abstract We investigate doubled (generalized) complex structures in 2D-dimensional Born geometries where T-duality symmetry is manifestly realized. We show that Kähler, hyperkähler, bi-hermitian and bi-hypercomplex structures of spacetime are implemented in Born geometries as doubled structures. We find that the Born structures and the generalized Kähler (hyperkähler) structures appear as subalgebras of bi-quaternions and split-tetra-quaternions. We find parts of these structures are classified by Clifford algebras. We then study the T-duality nature of the worldsheet instantons in Born sigma models. We show that the instantons in Kähler geometries are related to those in bi-hermitian geometries in a non-trivial way.

Abstract The resurgence structure of the 2d O(N) sigma model at large N is studied with a focus on an IR momentum cutoff scale a that regularizes IR singularities in the semiclassical expansion. Transseries expressions for condensates and correlators are derived as series of the dynamical scale Λ (nonperturbative exponential) and coupling λ μ renormalized at the momentum scale μ. While there is no ambiguity when a > Λ, we find for a < Λ that the nonperturbative sectors have new imaginary ambiguities besides the well-known renormalon ambiguity in the perturbative sector. These ambiguities arise as a result of an analytic continuation of transseries coefficients to small values of the IR cutoff a below the dynamical scale Λ. We find that the imaginary ambiguities are cancelled each other when we take all of them into account. By comparing the semiclassical expansion with the transseries for the exact large-N result, we find that some ambiguities vanish in the a → 0 limit and hence the resurgence structure changes when going from the semiclassical expansion to the exact result with no IR cutoff. An application of our approach to the ℂP N−1 sigma model is also discussed. We find in the compactified model with the ℤ N twisted boundary condition that the resurgence structure changes discontinuously as the compactification radius is varied.

Abstract In this paper we study in detail the deformations introduced in [1] of the integrable structures of the AdS2,3 integrable models. We do this by embedding the corresponding scattering matrices into the most general solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. We show that there are several non-trivial embeddings and corresponding deformations. We work out crossing symmetry for these models and study their symmetry algebras and representations. In particular, we identify a new elliptic deformation of the AdS3 × S3 × M4 string sigma model.

Abstract It is well known that in two spatial dimensions the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) deals with point-like anyons that carry fractional electric charge and statistics. Moreover, in presence of a SO(3) order parameter, point-like skyrmions emerge and play a central role in the corresponding quantum Hall ferromagnetic phase. In this work, we show that in six spatial dimensions, the FQHE for extended objects shares very similar features with its two-dimensional counterpart. In the higher-dimensional case, the electromagnetic and hydrodynamical one-form gauge fields are replaced by three-form gauge fields and the usual point-like anyons are replaced by membranes, namely two-dimensional extended objects that can carry fractional charge and statistics. We focus on skyrmionic membranes, which are associated to a SO(5) order parameter and give rise to an higher-dimensional generalizaton of the quantum Hall ferromagnetism. We show that skyrmionic membranes naturally couple to the curved background through a generalized Wen-Zee term and can give us some insights about the chiral conformal field theory on the boundary. We then present a generalization of the Witten effect in six spatial dimensions by showing that one-dimensional extended monopoles (magnetic strings) in the bulk of the FQH states can acquire electric charge through an axion field by becoming dyonic strings.

Abstract Maximally N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ extended 2 + 1 dimensional flat supergravity theories exist for a class of super-Poincaré algebras for arbitrary N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ . They have rich asymptotic structures and contain all interesting topological supergravity solutions in presence of non-trivial holonomy. For the asymptotic symmetry algebra being a suitable flat limit of the superconformal algebra, which is an infinite dimensional extension of two copies of Osp( N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ |2; R) group, we have found the 1 + 1 dimensional chiral WZW model as the dual quantum field theory that describes the dynamics of these solutions. In the Hamiltonian analysis, the reduced phase space resembles a flat super Liouville theory.

Abstract We study the perturbative expansion of the ground state energy in the presence of an external field coupled to a conserved charge in the integrable two-dimensional O(4) nonlinear sigma model. By solving Volin’s algebraic equations for the perturbative coefficients we study the large order asymptotic behaviour of the perturbative series analytically. We confirm the previously numerically found leading behaviour and study the nearest singularities of the Borel transformed series and the associated alien derivatives. We find a “resurgence” behaviour: the leading alien derivatives can be expressed in terms of the original perturbative series. A simplified ‘toy’ model is also considered: here the perturbative series can be found in a closed form and the resurgence properties are very similar to that found in the real problem.

Abstract We continue our study of the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) factorization of winding string amplitudes in [1]. In a toroidal compactification, amplitudes for winding closed string states factorize into products of amplitudes for open strings ending on an array of D-branes localized in the compactified directions; the specific D-brane configuration is determined by the closed string data. In this paper, we study a zero Regge slope limit of the KLT relations between winding string amplitudes. Such a limit of string theory requires a critically tuned Kalb-Ramond field in a compact direction, and leads to a self-contained corner called nonrelativistic string theory. This theory is unitary, ultraviolet complete, and its string spectrum and spacetime S-matrix satisfy nonrelativistic symmetry. Moreover, the asymptotic closed string states in nonrelativistic string theory necessarily carry nonzero windings. First, starting with relativistic string theory, we construct a KLT factorization of amplitudes for winding closed strings in the presence of a critical Kalb-Ramond field. Then, in the zero Regge limit, we uncover a KLT relation for amplitudes in nonrelativistic string theory. Finally, we show how such a relation can be reproduced from first principles in a purely nonrelativistic string theory setting. We will also discuss connections to the amplitudes of string theory in the discrete light cone quantization (DLCQ), a method that is relevant for Matrix theory.

Abstract We derive a universal soft theorem for every scattering amplitude with at least one massless particle in an arbitrary theory of scalars. Our results follow from the geometry of field space and are valid for any choice of mass spectrum, potential terms, and higher-derivative interactions. For a vanishing potential, the soft limit of every amplitude is equal to the field-space covariant derivative of an amplitude with one fewer particle. Furthermore, the Adler zero and the dilaton soft theorem are special cases of our results. We also discuss more exotic scenarios in which the soft limit is non-trivial but still universal. Last but not least, we derive new theorems for multiple-soft limits which directly probe the field-space curvature, as well as on-shell recursion relations applicable to two-derivative scalar field theories exhibiting no symmetries whatsoever.

Abstract The homogeneous Yang-Baxter deformation is part of a larger web of integrable deformations and dualities that recently have been studied with motivations in integrable σ-models, solution-generating techniques in supergravity and Double Field Theory, and possible generalisations of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The σ-models obtained by the homogeneous Yang-Baxter deformation with periodic boundary conditions on the worldsheet are on-shell equivalent to undeformed models, yet with twisted boundary conditions. While this has been known for some time, the expression provided so far for the twist features non-localities (in terms of the degrees of freedom of the deformed model) that prevent practical calculations, and in particular the construction of the classical spectral curve. We solve this problem by rewriting the equation defining the twist in terms of the degrees of freedom of the undeformed yet twisted model, and we show that we are able to solve it in full generality. Remarkably, this solution is a local expression. We discuss the consequences of the twist at the level of the monodromy matrix and of the classical spectral curve, analysing in particular the concrete examples of abelian, almost abelian and Jordanian deformations of the Yang-Baxter class.

We derive the nonlinear sigma model as a peculiar dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills theory. In this framework, pions are reformulated as higher-dimensional gluons arranged in a kinematic configuration that only probes cubic interactions. This procedure yields a purely cubic action for the nonlinear sigma model that exhibits a symmetry enforcing color-kinematics duality. Remarkably, the associated kinematic algebra originates directly from the Poincaré algebra in higher dimensions. Applying the same construction to gravity yields a new quartic action for Born-Infeld theory and, applied once more, a cubic action for the special Galileon theory. Since the nonlinear sigma model and special Galileon are subtly encoded in the cubic sectors of Yang-Mills theory and gravity, respectively, their double copy relationship is automatic.

We discuss aspects of the possible transition between small black holes and highly excited fundamental strings. We focus on the connection between black holes and the self gravitating string solution of Horowitz and Polchinski. This solution is interesting because it has non-zero entropy at the classical level and it is natural to suspect that it might be continuously connected to the black hole. Surprisingly, we find a different behavior for heterotic and type II cases. For the type II case we find an obstruction to the idea that the two are connected as classical solutions of string theory, while no such obstruction exists for the heterotic case. We further provide a linear sigma model analysis that suggests a continuous connection for the heterotic case. We also describe a solution generating transformation that produces a charged version of the self gravitating string. This provides a fuzzball-like construction of near extremal configurations carrying fundamental string momentum and winding charges. We provide formulas which are exact in α′ relating the thermodynamic properties of the charged and the uncharged solutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This is the second of a series of two papers devoted to the partition function realization of Wilson surfaces in strict higher gauge theory. A higher 2-dimensional counterpart of the topological coadjoint orbit quantum mechanical model computing Wilson lines is presented based on the derived geometric framework, which has shown its usefulness in 4-dimensional higher Chern-Simons theory. Its symmetries are described. Its quantization is analyzed in the functional integral framework. Strong evidence is provided that the model does indeed underlie the partition function realization of Wilson surfaces. The emergence of the vanishing fake curvature condition is explained and homotopy invariance for a flat higher gauge field is shown. The model’s Hamiltonian formulation is further furnished highlighting the model’s close relationship to the derived Kirillov-Kostant-Souriau theory developed in the companion paper. We consider the integrability of a two-parameter deformation of the Wess-Zumino-Witten model, previously introduced in relation with Poisson-Lie T-duality. The resulting family of Poisson-Lie dual models is shown to be integrable by using the Maillet r/s formalism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract We consider the O(3) or ℂP 1 nonlinear sigma model as an effective field theory in a derivative expansion, with the most general Lagrangian that obeys O(3), parity and Lorentz symmetry. We work out the complete list of possible operators (terms) in the Lagrangian and eliminate as many as possible using integrations by parts. We further show at the four-derivative level, that the theory can be shown to avoid the Ostrogradsky instability, because the dependence on the d’Alembertian operator or so-called box, can be eliminated by a field redefinition. Going to the six-derivative order in the derivative expansion, we show that this can no longer be done, unless we are willing to sacrifice Lorentz invariance. By doing so, we can eliminate all dependence on double time derivatives and hence the Ostrogradsky instability or ghost, however, we unveil a remaining dynamical instability that takes the form either as a spiral instability or a runaway instability and estimate the critical field norm, at which the instability sets off.

Abstract We consider two nonlinear sigma models on de Sitter background which involve the same derivative interactions as quantum gravity but without the gauge issue. The first model contains only a single field, which can be reduced to a free theory by a local field redefinition; the second contains two fields and cannot be so reduced. Loop corrections in both models produce large temporal and spatial logarithms which cause perturbation theory to break down at late times and large distances. Many of these logarithms derive from the “tail” part of the propagator and can be summed using a variant of Starobinsky’s stochastic formalism involving a curvature-dependent effective potential. The remaining logarithms derive from the ultraviolet and can be summed using a variant of the renormalization group based on a special class of curvature-dependent renormalizations. Explicit results are derived at 1-loop and 2-loop orders.

Abstract We study the massive Yang-Mills theory in which the mass term is added by hand. The standard perturbative approach suggests that the massless limit of this theory is not smooth. We confirm that this issue is related to the existence of additional degrees of freedom, which are absent in the massless theory. Nevertheless, we show that the longitudinal modes become strongly coupled at the Vainshtein scale, which coincides with the scale of the unitarity violation. Beyond this scale, they decouple from the remaining degrees of freedom, and the massless theory is restored up to small corrections. From here, it follows that the apparent discontinuity in the massless limit is only an artefact of the perturbation theory. The massless limit of massive Yang-Mills theory is smooth, as originally proposed in [21].

Abstract Motivated by a possibility of solving non-supersymmetric type 0 string theory in AdS 5 × S 5 background using integrability, we revisit the construction of type 0 string spectrum in some solvable examples of backgrounds with RR fluxes that are common to type IIB and type 0B theories. The presence of RR fluxes requires the use of a Green-Schwarz description for type 0 string theory. Like in flat space, the spectrum of type 0 theory can be derived from the type II theory spectrum by a (−1) F orbifolding, i.e. combining the untwisted sector where GS fermions are periodic with the twisted sector where GS fermions are antiperiodic (and projecting out all spacetime fermionic states). This construction of the type 0 spectrum may also be implemented using Melvin background that allows to continuously interpolate between the type II and type 0 theories. As an illustration, we discuss the type 0B spectrum in the pp-wave background which is the Penrose limit of AdS 5 × S 5 with RR 5-form flux and also in the pp-wave background which is the Penrose limit of AdS 3 × S 3 × T4 supported by mixed RR and NSNS 3-form fluxes. We show that increasing the strength of the RR flux increases the value of the effective normal ordering constant (which determines the mass of the type 0 tachyon in flat space) and thus effectively decreases the momentum-space domain of instability of the ground state. We also comment on the semiclassical sector of states of type 0B theory in AdS 5 × S 5.

Abstract We revisit the formulation of non-relativistic (NR) string theory and its target space geometry. We obtain a new formulation in which the geometry contains a two-form field that couples to the tension current and that transforms under string Galilei boosts. This parallels the Newton-Cartan one-form that couples to the mass current of a non-relativistic point particle. We show how this formulation of the NR string arises both from an infinite speed of light limit and a null reduction of the relativistic closed bosonic string. In both cases, the two-form originates from a combination of metric quantities and the Kalb-Ramond field. The target space geometry of the NR string is seen to arise from the gauging of a new algebra that is obtained by an İnönü-Wigner contraction of the Poincaré algebra extended by the symmetries of the Kalb-Ramond field. In this new formulation, there are no superfluous target space fields that can be removed by fixing a Stückelberg symmetry. Classically, there are no foliation/torsion constraints imposed on the target space geometry.

Abstract We compute, for cosmological backgrounds, the O(d, d; ℝ) invariant beta functions for the sigma model of the bosonic string at two loops. This yields an independent first-principle derivation of the order α′ corrections to the cosmological target-space equations. To this end we revisit the quantum consistency of Tseytlin’s duality invariant formulation of the worldsheet theory. While we confirm the absence of gravitational (and hence Lorentz) anomalies, our results show that the minimal subtraction scheme is not applicable, implying significant technical complications at higher loops. To circumvent these we then change gears and use the Polyakov action for cosmological backgrounds, applying a suitable perturbation scheme that, although not O(d, d; ℝ) invariant, allows one to efficiently determine the O(d, d; ℝ) invariant beta functions.

Abstract We study a perturbation family of N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 2 3d gauge theories and its relation to quantum K-theory. A 3d version of the Intriligator-Vafa formula is given for the quantum K-theory ring of Grassmannians. The 3d BPS half-index of the gauge theory is connected to the theory of bilateral hypergeometric q-series, and to modular q-characters of a class of conformal field theories in a certain massless limit. Turning on 3d Wilson lines at torsion points leads to mock modular behavior. Perturbed correlators in the IR regime are computed by determining the UV-IR map in the presence of deformations.

Abstract Using numerical methods for finding Ricci-flat metrics, we explore the spectrum of local operators in two-dimensional conformal field theories defined by sigma models on Calabi-Yau targets at large volume. Focusing on the examples of K3 and the quintic, we show that the spectrum, averaged over a region in complex structure moduli space, possesses the same statistical properties as the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random matrix theory.

Abstract We study regularization scheme dependence of β-function for sigma models with two-dimensional target space. Working within four-loop approximation, we conjecture the scheme in which the β-function retains only two tensor structures up to certain terms containing ζ 3. Using this scheme, we provide explicit solutions to RG flow equation corresponding to Yang-Baxter- and λ-deformed SU(2)/U(l) sigma models, for which these terms disappear.

Abstract We obtain Proca field theory from the quantisation of the N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 2 supersymmetric worldline upon supplementing the graded BRST-algebra with an extra multiplet of oscillators. The linearised theory describes the BV-extended spectrum of Proca theory, together with a Stückelberg field. When coupling the theory to background fields we derive the Proca equations, arising as consistency conditions in the BRST procedure. We also explore non-abelian modifications, complexified vector fields as well as coupling to a dilaton field. We propose a cubic action on the space of BRST-operators which reproduces the known Proca action.

Abstract The geodesic approximation is a powerful method for studying the dynamics of BPS solitons. However, there are systems, such as BPS monopoles in three-dimensional hyperbolic space, where this approach is not applicable because the moduli space metric defined by the kinetic energy is not finite. In the case of hyperbolic monopoles, an alternative metric has been defined using the abelian connection on the sphere at infinity, but its relation to the dynamics of hyperbolic monopoles is unclear. Here this metric is placed in a more general context of boundary metrics on soliton moduli spaces. Examples are studied in systems in one and two space dimensions, where it is much easier to compare the results with simulations of the full nonlinear field theory dynamics. It is found that geodesics of the boundary metric provide a reasonable description of soliton dynamics.
