An important measure of brain health is the integrity of white matter connectivity structures that link brain regions. Studies have found an association between poorer sleep quality and decreased white matter integrity. Stress is among the strongest predictors of sleep quality. This study aimed to evaluate the association between sleep quality and white matter and to test if the relationship persisted after accounting for stress. White matter microstructures were measured by diffusion tensor imaging in a population of Old Order Amish/Mennonite (N = 240). Sleep quality was determined by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Current stress levels were measured by the perceived stress scale. Exposure to lifetime stress was measured by the lifetime stressor inventory. Microstructures of four white matter tracts: left and right anterior limbs of internal capsule, left anterior corona radiata, and genu of corpus callosum were significantly correlated with sleep quality (all p ≤ 0.001). The current stress level was a significant predictor of sleep quality (p ≤ 0.001) while lifetime stress was not. PSQI remained significantly associated with white matter integrity in these frontal tracts (all p 0.01) after accounting for current stress and lifetime stress, while current and lifetime stress were not significant predictors of white matter in any of the four models. Sleep quality did not have any substantial mediation role between stress and white matter integrity. Sleep quality was significantly associated with several frontal white matter tracts that connect brain structures important for sleep regulation regardless of current or past stress levels.

During wildfire season in the western US, fire retardant chemicals are dropped from aircraft in an effort to control the spread of fire. Fire retardant dropped on sites that are not actively burning results in exceptionally high soil nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) “fertilization” effect on wildland soils impacting terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Herein, we used microdialysis to evaluate the short-term spatiotemporal dynamics of soil inorganic N and ortho-P fluxes in response to wood pyrogenic carbon (PyC) on soils receiving fire retardant (Phos-Chek) in a 28-d column experiment. Retardant additions to soil induced dramatic increases in soil inorganic N and ortho-P flux rates. The addition of wood PyC to soils with retardant significantly and immediately reduced ortho-P flux rates at multiple depths (1, 5, and 10 cm) and reduced NH4+ flux rates at 10 cm while retaining flux rates at 1 and 5 cm. These effects were observed throughout the course of the experiment and were more pronounced towards the end of the experiment. By d-28, PyC significantly reduced the NH4+, NO3−, and ortho-P accumulation on ionic resins at soil column bottoms by 50%, 52%, and 43%, respectively. The application of wood PyC may be effective at buffering excess nutrient fluxes from fire retardant and reduce short-term nutrient leaching in unburnt forest soils exposed to fire retardant.

Leakage detection tests have become an indispensable tool for testing implementations featuring side channel countermeasures such as masking. Whilst moment-based techniques such as the Welch’s $t$ -test are universally powerful if there is leakage in a central moment, they naturally fail if this is not the case. Distribution-based techniques such as the $\chi ^{2}$ -test then come to the rescue, but they have shown not to be robust with regards to noise. In this paper, we propose a novel leakage detection technique based on Neyman’s smoothness test. We find that our new test is robust with respect to noise (similar to the merit of Welch’s $t$ -test), and can pick up on leakage that is not located in central moments (similar to the merit of the $\chi ^{2}$ -test). We also find that there is a sweet-spot where Neyman’s test outperforms both the $t$ -test and the $\chi ^{2}$ -test. Realistic measurements confirm that such a sweet-spot is relevant in practice for detecting implementation flaws.

The safety of presurgical thromboprophylaxis using low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) has not been well described in head and neck oncologic surgery with free tissue transfer (HNS-FTT).Retrospective chart review of HNS-FTT patients receiving versus not receiving presurgical subcutaneous enoxaparin (Px-LMWH) was performed. Outcomes included estimated blood loss (EBL), hematoma, flap compromise, DVT or pulmonary embolus (PE). Fisher's exact test and Wilcoxon Rank Sum test were performed to compare groups. Odds ratios and associated 95 % confidence intervals were provided as appropriate.43 of 128 patients (34 %) received Px-LMWH. There was no significant difference in EBL, hematoma, or flap complications between groups. Patients without Px-LMWH had higher rates of DVT and PE, although the difference did not reach statistical significance (p = 1.00, 0.095, respectively).Presurgical Px-LMWH can be used in major head and neck reconstructive surgery without increased intraoperative blood loss or postoperative complications. Larger studies will need to be done to determine the impact of Px-LMWH on DVT and PE in this patient population.

Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys usually show relatively low strength and poor ductility at room temperature due to their anisotropic hexagonal close-packed (HCP) crystal structure that provides a limited number of independent slip systems. Here we report that unique combinations of strength and ductility can be realized in bulk polycrystalline pure Mg by tuning the predominant deformation mode. We succeeded in obtaining the fully recrystallized specimens of pure Mg having a wide range of average grain sizes, of which minimum grain size was 650 nm, and clarified mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms at room temperature systematically as a function of the grain size. Deformation twinning and basal slip governed plastic deformation in the conventional coarse-grained region, but twinning was suppressed when the grain size was refined down to several micro-meters. Eventually, grain boundary mediated plasticity, i.e., grain boundary sliding became dominant in the ultrafine-grained (UFG) specimen having a mean grain size smaller than 1 μm. The transition of the deformation modes led to a significant increase of tensile elongation and breakdown of Hall-Petch relationship. It was quantitatively confirmed by detailed microstructural observation and theoretical calculation that the change in strength and ductility arose from the distinct grain size dependence of the critical shear stress for activating different deformation modes.

Tobacco smoking is a risk factor for impaired brain function, but its causal effect on white matter brain aging remains unclear. This study aimed to measure the causal effect of tobacco smoking on white matter brain aging.Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis using two non-overlapping data sets (with and without neuroimaging data) from UK Biobank (UKB). The group exposed to smoking and control group consisted of current smokers and never smokers, respectively. Our main method was generalized weighted linear regression with other methods also included as sensitivity analysis.United Kingdom.The study cohort included 23 624 subjects [10 665 males and 12 959 females with a mean age of 54.18 years, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 54.08, 54.28].Genetic variants were selected as instrumental variables under the MR analysis assumptions: (1) associated with the exposure; (2) influenced outcome only via exposure; and (3) not associated with confounders. The exposure smoking status (current versus never smokers) was measured by questionnaires at the initial visit (2006-10). The other exposure, cigarettes per day (CPD), measured the average number of cigarettes smoked per day for current tobacco users over the life-time. The outcome was the 'brain age gap' (BAG), the difference between predicted brain age and chronological age, computed by training machine learning model on a non-overlapping set of never smokers.The estimated BAG had a mean of 0.10 (95% CI = 0.06, 0.14) years. The MR analysis showed evidence of positive causal effect of smoking behaviors on BAG: the effect of smoking is 0.21 (in years, 95% CI = 6.5 × 10There appears to be a significant causal effect of smoking on the brain age gap, which suggests that smoking prevention can be an effective intervention for accelerated brain aging and the age-related decline in cognitive function.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis related to high morbidity and mortality. The incidence of psoriasis is increasing in recent decades. Some patients with psoriasis are anxious about the underlying side effects of synthetic drugs they are on. Therefore, they are eager to seek alternative and efficient therapy, such as Chinese herbal medicine (CHM). Researchers have found some CHM provides best source for the development of anti-psoriatic drugs because of their structural diversity and fewer adverse reactions. Some of CHM formulas or active constituents extracted from CHM have been rapidly developed into clinical drugs with good efficacy. At present, along with the CHM formulas, single CHM and its active components have been extensively accepted and utilized in the treatment of psoriasis, whose therapeutic mechanisms hitherto have not been thoroughly illustrated.This review aimed to comprehensively summarize about the existing therapeutic mechanisms of CHM in the treatment of psoriasis and to provide a reference to develop future related studies in this field.Relevant literatures about how CHM treated psoriasis were acquired from published scientific studies (including PubMed, CNKI, Web of Science, Baidu Scholar, The Plant List, Elsevier and SciFinder). All plants appearing in the review have been included in The Plant List or Medicinal Plant Names Services (MPNS).In this review, we collect numerous literatures about how CHM treats psoriasis via immune cells, signaling pathways and disease-related mediators and systematically elucidates potential mechanisms from the point of the suppression of oxidative stress, the inhibition of abnormal abnormal proliferation and differentiation, the inhibition of immune responses, and the suppression of angiogenesis.Psoriasis is considered as a complicated disease caused by interaction among various mechanisms. The CHM formulas, single CHM and its active components have considerable positive reports about the treatment of psoriasis, which brings hope for a promising future of CHM in the clinical therapy of psoriasis. In the paper, we have concluded that the existing therapeutic mechanisms of CHM in the treatment of psoriasis.

The association between socioeconomic status and the onset age of menarche is still not conclusive. This cross-sectional study was conducted among primary and middle school girls aged 7 to 16 years old in Tianjin, China, to explore the distribution of menarcheal age and its association with socioeconomic status. A self-designed structured questionnaire was completed by students and their parents to collect information on socioeconomic status (i.e., family income, parental education level, living residence), menarcheal status, and covariates (weight status of girls and their parents, sleeping hours per day, physical activity). Information on menarcheal status included whether or not menarche had occurred (Yes/No) and the exact age at menarche. Linear regression analysis was used to explore the association between socioeconomic status and menarcheal age before and after covariate adjustment. Among 1485 eligible girls with complete information, 445 had experienced menarche, with an overall menarche rate of 30%. The mean age at menarche was 12.9 years (95% confidence interval 12.8–13.0). Urban girls experienced menarche earlier than rural girls did (12.1 years vs. 13.5 years). Univariate analysis showed that urban residence and higher parental education were associated with earlier onset of menarche. After covariate adjustment, the significance still existed. However, after adjusting further for residence, the significant association with the parental education disappeared. Only urban residence was still significantly associated, even after further adjustment for parental education and family income, with adjusted regression coefficients (95% confidence interval) of − 1.087 (− 1.340,-0.834), indicating that the onset age of menarche among urban girls was 1.087 years (0.834, 1.340) younger than that among rural girls. Family income was not related to the onset age of menarche in any analyses. Conclusion: Urban-rural differences played a more important role in the early onset of menarche than socioeconomic differences between families.

A concentrated aluminum chloride (AlCl3)-diglyme (G2) electrolyte is used to prepare hard and corrosion-resistant aluminum (Al) electrodeposited films. The Al electrodeposits obtained from the electrolyte with an AlCl3/G2 molar ratio x = 0.4 showed a void-free microstructure composed of spherical particles, in stark contrast to flake-like morphologies with micro-voids for lower x. Neutral complexes rarely exist in the x = 0.4 electrolyte, resulting in a relatively high conductivity despite the high concentration and high viscosity. Nanoindentation measurements for the Al deposits with >99% purity revealed that the nanohardness was 2.86 GPa, three times higher than that for Al materials produced through electrodeposition from a well-known ionic liquid bath or through severe plastic deformation. Additionally, the void-free Al deposits had a preferential crystal orientation, which accounted for better resistance to free corrosion and pitting corrosion. Discussions about the compact microstructure and crystal orientation of deposits obtained only from the x = 0.4 concentrated electrolyte are also presented.

The plant Scutellaria barbata (SB) is commonly used as herbal medicines for treating cancer. The present pre-clinical study aimed to validate the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (CP) recommended dosages of SB water extract (SBW) in treating colon tumors. The content of chemical marker scutellarin in SBW was quantified using UPLC. Mice bearing human HCT116 xenografts or murine colon26 tumors received oral administration of SBW or scutellarin for 4 weeks. Results showed that SBW (615 and 1,230 mg/kg) and scutellarin (7 mg/kg) treatments significantly reduced human xenograft weights by 28.7, 36.9 and 28.8%, respectively. Lung metastasis area could be ameliorated after SBW (615 mg/kg) and scutellarin (7 mg/kg) treatments by 23.4 and 29.5%, respectively. Expressions of colon cancer metastasis-related proteins E-cadherin, Tspan 8 and CXCR4, as well as Src kinase in tumors were first shown to be regulated by SBW. Furthermore, in murine colon26 tumor-bearing mice, SBW (615 mg/kg) and scutellarin (7 mg/kg) treatments reduced the orthotopic tumor burden by 94.7% and lung metastatic tumor burden by 94.1%, respectively. Our findings provided evidences that SBW (at the mouse equivalent dosages to clinical dosages recommended by CP) could exert anti-tumor and anti-metastatic effects in colon cancer animal models.

Multilayered Al sheets having alternative stacking of 2 N Al (99.21 wt.% purity, N is short for nine) and 4 N Al (99.993 wt.% purity, N is short for nine) with various layer thicknesses from 16 to 1 μm were fabricated by 6 to 10 accumulative roll bonding (ARB) cycles, followed by annealing. The effects of layer thickness and annealing treatment on mechanical properties were studied. In all samples, the grain sizes in the 4 N layers were larger than those in the 2 N layers due to the purity difference. The grain size and mechanical properties saturated after 6 ARB cycles, but the layer thickness gradually decreases with increasing cycles and accordingly, more homogeneous microstructures were obtained with higher cycles. After annealing, heterogeneous structures were retained in 6-cycle sample, while most homogenous structures were observed in 10-cycle sample. Yield-drop phenomenon widely observed in the homogeneous samples disappeared in the heterogeneous 6-cycle sample after annealing at 225 and 250 °C.

To understand work hardening behavior during low-cycle loading, ductile cast iron containing 10.1 vol% spheroidal graphite, 19.6 vol% pearlite, and ferrite matrix was investigated in an in situ neutron diffraction study of up to four cycles of tensile–compressive loading with applied strains of ±0.01. The amplitudes of applied stress, Bauschinger stress, and Bauschinger strain were found to increase with increasing cycle number, indicating work hardening as cyclic loading progressed. Absolute values of ferrite lattice strain at maximum and minimum applied strains increased with increasing cycle number, indicating an increase in ferrite strength. Consequently, the stress contribution to the strength from ferrite increased as cyclic loading progressed. Cementite embedded in pearlite behaved as the hardest phase and maintained elastic deformation, but its stress contribution to strength was limited because the volume fraction was only about 2.2%. Meanwhile, graphite accommodated little stress. The increase in ferrite strength, caused by dislocation accumulation in ferrite during cyclic loading, played an important role in the work hardening of the ductile cast iron.

Objectives Two labdane diterpenoids, leojapone B and heteronone B, were isolated from Leonurus japonicus Houtt., and their biological activity were evaluated in this study. Methods Human and mouse cancer cells, human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and mouse macrophages (RAW264.7 cells) were used to evaluate the activity of leojapone B and heteronone B, while the in vivo effects of leojapone B were further examined in Lewis Lung Cancer tumour-bearing mice. Key findings In vitro studies showed that leojapone B selectively inhibited the proliferation of lung cancer cells, and both leojapone B and heteronone B inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in activated PBMCs. In tumour-bearing mice model, lung tumours were reduced in size in mice treated with intraperitoneal injections of leojapone B at 20 and 30 mg/kg for 14 days. The population ratio of CD4+/CD8+ T cells in mouse spleens was found to be increased, while regulatory T cells were decreased after leojapone B treatment. Conclusions The inhibitory effects of leojapone B in mouse lung tumours were demonstrated for the first time in this study. The immunomodulatory activity of heteronone B were also demonstrated. Our findings indicated that both leojapone B and heteronone B may act as active components in L. japonicus.

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of updated pediatric hypertension (HTN) criteria (the 2017 AAP Guidelines) on prevalence estimates of HTN and prehypertension among Chinese children compared to the 2004 Fourth Report. A total of 2093 children aged 7-15 years from five schools in Tianjin, China were selected using a multistage random cluster sampling method. The prevalence of HTN per the 2017 AAP Guidelines (10.1%) was significantly higher than that per the Fourth Report (6.6%), whereas the prevalence of prehypertension per the 2017 AAP Guidelines (6.3%) was significantly lower than that per the Fourth Report (8.8%). From the 2004 Fourth Report to the 2017 AAP Guidelines, a total of 117 (5.6%) children were reclassified to have higher blood pressure. The two criteria had better consistency in the diagnosis of systolic abnormalities than in the diagnosis of diastolic abnormalities. The updated definitions for pediatric HTN have a substantive impact on the prevalence estimation among Chinese children, especially among boys, overweight children, and older children.

Based on recent findings in ultrafine grained metals, we proposed a strategy for overcoming the strength-ductility trade-off in structural metallic materials. Sequential nucleation of different deformation modes, such as unusual slip systems, deformation twinning, martensitic transformation, etc., would regenerate strain-hardening ability of the material, leading to high strength and large tensile ductility. For discussing the activation of different deformation modes in atomistic scales, the concept of plaston which considered local excitation of atoms under singular dynamic fields was proposed.

Catalytic depolymerization of lignin to produce bio-oil, liquid fuels, and aromatic chemicals in high yields is important for a biorefinery to remain competitive. In this study, undoped and Ni-doped catalysts for depolymerization of rice husk lignin (RHL) were developed and analyzed. The results showed that the catalysts had hydrotalcite-like structures with lamellar morphology. With suitable Ni-doping amount, the catalysts had high activity, thus better promoted the depolymerization of RHL. Among all catalysts, the Ni1/4MgAl catalyst could best promote the cleavage of the β-O-4 aryl ether bond in RHL molecule and thus could substantially increase the yields of bio-oil. The depolymerization catalyzed by this catalyst was also found to be temperature-, time-, and solvent-dependent. This study provides information that can be beneficial to the biorefinery industries and may help promote the valorization of lignin.

Sound is an essential element for enhancing the realness of virtual world. Currently, there are some remarkable works on the synthesis of fluid sound, such as fire and water. However, little attention has been paid to synthesizing explosion sound. This paper proposes an automatic method for synthesizing explosion sounds that are synchronized with the visual phenomena of explosion animations, including fireball generation and flame combustion. Such two types of visual animation correspond to two types of sound, which we name as explosive sound and combustion noise, respectively. For the synthesis of explosive sound, firstly, the occurrence time and duration of explosion sound are determined according to the dynamic process of fuel consumption, and then, the corresponding explosive sound is extracted from the recording examples according to the high-frequency content. For the combustion noise, we propose a synthesis method of combustion noise on the basis of the timbre similarity between sound examples and low-frequency combustion noise generated by a physical method. Finally, the two types of sound are blended respecting the occurrence and duration of the explosions and combustions parts detected in the visual stream. Our experiments and the user study show the results of our method and demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

Hall-Petch relationships were studied in Ti-6Al-4V alloy with fully equiaxed and two different bimodal microstructures obtained by intercritical annealing at 850 °C (BM850) and 950 °C (BM950). The Hall-Petch coefficient of the BM850 microstructure composed of harder primary α grains and softer transformed β areas was identical to that of the fully equiaxed microstructure, indicating the same nature of yielding behavior determined by the resisting ability of equiaxed α grain boundaries against slip transfer in both microstructures. The BM950 microstructure having smaller amount of primary α, however, showed a yielding nature like a particle-strengthened composite, leading to the different Hall-Petch relationship.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a risk factor for various diseases with a high prevalence globally. We aimed to investigate the association of serum vitamin D levels with MetS, and we hypothesized that the beneficial cutoffs of vitamin D for MetS might vary by sex among urban people aged ≥60 years in Tianjin, China. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of dietary supplementation of keratinase on the production of broilers fed a diet containing feather meal. A total of 162 1-d-old Cobb 500 male broiler (n = 9 cages/diet with 6 chicks/cage) were randomly allocated to 3 dietary treatments. The broilers were fed a corn-soybean-feather meal based diet (BD), or BD supplemented with keratinase at 100,000 or 200,000 U/kg for 6 weeks. Compared to the control, dietary supplementation with 200,000 U/kg keratinase increased (P0.05) body weight gain (3.6-4.3%) and reduced feed conversion ratio (2.4-5.6%) during the various experimental periods, and also improved (P0.05) apparent total tract digestibility of ash and calcium by 45.0% and 8.8%, respectively. Meanwhile, dietary supplementation of keratinase at 100,000 U/kg reduced (P0.05) the drip loss (29.2%), while 200,000 U/kg keratinase supplementation increased (P0.05) the pH value (1.6%) at 45 min and decreased (P0.05) the lightness (L* value; 13.6%) and drip loss (22.1%) of pectoral muscle. Moreover, dietary supplementation of keratinase at both levels of 100,000 and 200,000 U/kg increased (P0.05) Glutathione peroxidase activity (82.5-87.5%) and decreased the Malondialdehyde concentration (14.5-18.3%) in the pectoral muscle. In conclusion, dietary supplementation of keratinase at 200,000 U/kg can improve the performance, meat quality, apparent total tract digestibility of nutrients, and redox status of broiler chickens fed a diet containing feather meal.

Two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are of interest for beyond-silicon electronics

Background High efficacy disease modifying therapies (DMT) in the management of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) have a favorable effect on relapse rate and disability progression; however, they can expose patients to significant risks, such as progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). Objective The study aims to investigate prognostic factors that can determine outcome in MS-related PML patients. Methods We conducted a literature review and meta-analysis of 194 patients from 62 articles in PubMed, SCOPUS and EMBASE. Results Out of 194 patients (66.5% women, 33.5% men), 81% had progression in their EDSS score by at least 1 point from the time of PML diagnosis (EDSS-P group). The remaining patients had either stable or improved EDSS (EDSS-S group). In univariate analysis, older age at the time of PML diagnosis was associated with higher probability of disability accumulation and worsening of EDSS by at least 1 point (mean age = 44.8, p = 0.046). After adjusting for other variables, age at time of PML diagnosis remained a significant predictive variable in the multivariable logistic model (OR = 0.93, 95% CI: 0.88–0.99, p = 0.037). Natalizumab is the most commonly associated DMT linked to PML, followed by fingolimod and others including dimethyl fumarate, ocrelizumab, alemtuzumab. Among the different treatments used, no therapeutic agent was found to be superior in improving post-PML EDSS. Conclusions Younger age and lower JCV viral load at the time of PML diagnosis were associated with better outcome in MS-associate PML, while none of the PML therapies was superior over the others or associated with favorable outcome.

Background Atherosclerotic plaque vulnerability is a key feature of atheroprogression and precipitating acute cardiovascular events. Although the pivotal role of epigenetic regulation in atherosclerotic plaque destabilization is being recognized, the DNA methylation profile and its potential role in driving the progression and destabilization of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease remains largely unknown. We conducted a genome-wide analysis to identify differentially methylated genes in vulnerable and non-vulnerable atherosclerotic lesions to understand more about pathogenesis. Results We compared genome-wide DNA methylation profiling between carotid artery plaques of patients with clinically symptomatic (recent stroke or transient ischemic attack) and asymptomatic disease (no recent stroke) using Infinium Methylation BeadChip arrays, which revealed 90,368 differentially methylated sites (FDR 0.03) corresponding to 14,657 annotated genes. Among these genomic sites, 30% were located at the promoter regions and 14% in the CpG islands, according to genomic loci and genomic proximity to the CpG islands, respectively. Moreover, 67% displayed hypomethylation in symptomatic plaques, and the differentially hypomethylated genes were found to be involved in various aspects of inflammation. Subsequently, we focus on CpG islands and revealed 14,596 differentially methylated sites (|delta beta|> 0.1) located at the promoter regions of 7048 genes. Integrated analysis of methylation and gene expression profiles identified that 107 genes were hypomethylated in symptomatic plaques and showed elevated expression levels in both advanced plaques and ruptured plaques. The imprinted gene PLA2G7, which encodes lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2), was one of the top hypomethylated genes with an increased expression upon inflammation. Further, the hypomethylated CpG site at the promoter region of PLA2G7 was identified as cg11874627, demethylation of which led to increased binding of Sp3 and expression of Lp-PLA2 through bisulfate sequencing, chromatin immunoprecipitation assay and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. These effects were further enhanced by deacetylase. Conclusion Extensive DNA methylation modifications serve as a new and critical layer of biological regulation that contributes to atheroprogression and destabilization via inflammatory processes. Revelation of this hitherto unknown epigenetic regulatory mechanism could rejuvenate the prospects of Lp-PLA2 as a therapeutic target to stabilize the atherosclerotic plaque and reduce clinical sequelae.

With the development of convolutional neural networks (CNN), the super-resolution results of CNN-based method have far surpassed traditional method. In particular, the CNN-based single image super-resolution method has achieved excellent results. Video sequences contain more abundant information compare with image, but there are few video super-resolution methods that can be applied to mobile devices due to the requirement of heavy computation, which limits the application of video super-resolution. In this work, we propose the Efficient Video Super-Resolution Network (EVSRNet) with neural architecture search for real-time video super-resolution. Extensive experiments show that our method achieves a good balance between quality and efficiency. Finally, we achieve a competitive result of 7.36 where the PSNR is 27.85 dB and the inference time is 11.3 ms/f on the target snapdragon 865 SoC, resulting in a 2nd place in the Mobile AI (MAI) 2021 real-time video super-resolution challenge. It is noteworthy that, our method is the fastest and significantly outperforms other competitors by large margins.

Stress and abnormal stress response are associated with schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD), but the brain mechanisms linking stress to symptomatology remain unclear. In this study, we used a stress-based functional neuroimaging task, reverse-translated from preclinical studies, to test the hypothesis that abnormal corticolimbic processing of stressful threat anticipation is associated with psychosis and affective symptoms in SSD. Participants underwent an MRI-compatible ankle-shock task (AST) in which the threat of mild electrical shock was anticipated. We compared functional brain activations during anticipatory threat periods from N = 18 participants with SSD (10 M/8F) to those from N = 12 community controls (9 M/3F). After family-wise error correction, only one region, the ventral anterior cingulate cortex (vACC), showed significantly reduced activation compared with controls. vACC activation significantly correlated with clinical symptoms measured by the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale total score (r = 0.54) and the psychosis subscale (r = 0.71), and inversely correlated with trait depression measured by the Maryland Trait and State Depression scale (r=-0.48). Deficient activation in vACC under stress of anticipated threat may lead to aberrant interpretation of such threat, contributing to psychosis and mood symptoms in SSD. This experimental paradigm has translational potential and may identify circuitry-level mechanisms of stress-related mental illness, leading to more targeted treatment.

Because nonfatal and fatal incidents for stranded motorists are not separated from vehicular accidents, little data are available on incident characteristics. To close this gap, data fields were inserted into databases at a medical examiner's office and two trauma centers to collect injury-related information. Forensic nurses and pathologists aided in forming a collaboration among the agencies involved and supported data collection efforts. Data collected over a 5-year period were examined for injury patterns to determine risk factors affecting these patterns. Of the total sample (N = 219), 24.7% had spinal injuries resulting in fatal injuries for 46 of 54 individuals. The odds were stranded motorists with spine-related injuries (C1-C7) had 9.13 times higher risk for a fatal outcome compared with those without spine-related injuries. Severe injuries (Abbreviated Injury Scale scores ≥ 4) noted for head/neck (29.7%) and chest (24.2%) were significantly associated with fatality. Of the 219 cases, 22.8% were inside of a stopped vehicle, and 77.2% were outside a vehicle at the time of injury. Outcomes illustrated the success of the interprofessional collaboration between trauma centers and a medicolegal death investigation agency that resulted in data useful for forensic nurses and pathologists documenting evidence, emergency and trauma responding personnel in patient priority stabilization, and injury prevention specialists for highway safety programs.

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to assess the presence of HPV DNA in cervical tissues and lymph nodes in patients who have uterine cervical neoplasms with lymphatic metastases and who underwent surgery for invasive cervical cancer and pelvic lymphadenectomy, to establish the utility of HPV type and viral load in predicting disease progression. MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrospectively assessed 88 patients with uterine cervical neoplasms with lymph node metastases. All 88 patients were in FIGO stage IA-IIB. A total of 316 paraffin-embedded archival tissues (88 cervical samples and 228 pelvic lymph node specimens) were acquired. All the samples were analyzed using real-time PCR to determine HPV DNA presence/type and to quantify viral load. RESULTS In total, 17 HPV genotypes were detected in the cervical lesions and pelvic lymph nodes of the patients. The most common HPV type in all samples was HPV16, followed by HPV18. The existence of HPV16 DNA and low HPV16 viral load in cervical lesions were also significantly associated with disease recurrence. Furthermore, lymphovascular space involvement was also correlated with worse disease outcome. CONCLUSIONS HPV16 DNA presence and low viral load in primary lesions can be used to predict disease recurrence. HPV DNA is a favorable prognostic indicator in patients with uterine cervical neoplasms who have lymphatic metastases.

Aim To explore the relationship between positron-emission tomography (PET) and intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) histogram parameters and their correlations with the clinicopathological features of cervical squamous cell cancer (CSCC). Materials and methods Forty-four patients with CSCC underwent pelvic combined PET/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) including IVIM sequences. The maximum/mean standardized uptake value (SUVmax/SUVmean), metabolic tumour volume (MTV), and total lesion glycolysis (TLG) of PET, histogram parameters of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), IVIM biomarkers of tissue diffusivity (D), and perfusion fraction (F) were calculated. Correlations between SUV and IVIM (including ADC) histogram parameters, imaging parameters and clinicopathological features were evaluated. Results SUV showed weak or no correlations with most histogram parameters of ADC, D, and F, except for a moderate correlation between SUVmax or SUVmean and ADCmin (r=–0.69, p Conclusion No universal correlations between SUV and IVIM parameters were found in this study, and further investigation of PET and IVIM parameters as independent potential biomarkers should be investigated for evaluating the clinicopathological characteristics of cervical cancer.

Electron ptychography has recently attracted considerable interest for high resolution phase-sensitive imaging. However, to date studies have been mainly limited to radiation resistant samples as the electron dose required to record a ptychographic dataset is too high for use with beam-sensitive materials. Here we report defocused electron ptychography using a fast, direct-counting detector to reconstruct the transmission function, which is in turn related to the electrostatic potential of a two-dimensional material at atomic resolution under various low dose conditions.

Background Positron emission tomography (PET) parameters for a combination of the primary tumor and suspicious metastatic lymph nodes (SMLNs) appear to be more potential than those for the primary tumor alone for evaluating tumor recurrence in locally advanced cervical carcinoma (LACC), while the optimal threshold has not been determined. This study investigated the optimal PET parameters and percentage of SUVmax (%SUVmax) thresholds for tumor recurrence evaluation, and the relationship with hematological parameters in patients with LACC treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). Methods Eighty-nine patients with advanced squamous cell cervical carcinoma (SCCC) scheduled for CCRT underwent pretreatment whole body PET/CT scans. We analyzed PET parameters including maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax), metabolic tumor volume (MTV), and total lesion glycolysis (TLG) of the primary tumor (SUVmax-P, MTV-P, TLG-P) and the combination of the primary tumor and SMLNs (SUVmax-C, MTV-C, TLG-C). The association between PET parameters with different %SUVmax threshold and recurrence-free survival (RFS), and the correlations between PET parameters and hematological parameters including squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCC-ag), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and hemoglobin (Hb) were evaluated. Results The optimal threshold for evaluating tumor recurrence was 50%SUVmax, and the optimal PET parameter was MTV-C with the 50%SUVmax threshold (MTV-C50%) (c-index =0.752).
