Odense Steel Shipyard Chief Exec Kurt Andersen is convinced that the Danish shipyard owes its survival to the European Union's Esprit programmes. The yard was threatened with closure in 1986 and badly needed to boost productivity to cope with growing international competition. However, it is now one of the world's most productive shipyards. The Esprit programmes bring together European firms and research institutes for joint development of new technology. Odense has been involved in seven Esprit projects, including new robot technology, and has reaped great productivity benefits.
