Linear thresholding systems have been used as a model of neural activation and have more recently been proposed as a model of gene activation. Deterministic linear thresholding systems can be turned into non-deterministic systems by the introduction of noise. Under mild conditions on the noise, we show that the deterministic model can be deduced from the probabilities of the non-deterministic model., Comment: 4 pages

Quantum Physics - Abstract
The classical simulation of quantum computers is in general a computationally hard problem. To emulate the behavior of realistic devices, it is sufficient to sample bitstrings from circuits. Recently, arXiv:2112.08499 introduced the so-called gate-by-gate sampling algorithm to sample bitstrings and showed it to be computationally favorable in many cases. Here we present bgls, a Python package which implements this sampling algorithm. bgls has native support for several states and is highly flexible for use with additional states. We show how to install and use bgls, discuss optimizations in the algorithm, and demonstrate its utility on several problems., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures, included in Workshops of The International Conference on High Performance Computing, Network, Storage, and Analysis (SC-W 2023)

Computer Science - Human-Computer Interaction - Abstract
Machine learning (ML) models are fundamentally shaped by data, and building inclusive ML systems requires significant considerations around how to design representative datasets. Yet, few novice-oriented ML modeling tools are designed to foster hands-on learning of dataset design practices, including how to design for data diversity and inspect for data quality. To this end, we outline a set of four data design practices (DDPs) for designing inclusive ML models and share how we designed a tablet-based application called Co-ML to foster learning of DDPs through a collaborative ML model building experience. With Co-ML, beginners can build image classifiers through a distributed experience where data is synchronized across multiple devices, enabling multiple users to iteratively refine ML datasets in discussion and coordination with their peers. We deployed Co-ML in a 2-week-long educational AIML Summer Camp, where youth ages 13-18 worked in groups to build custom ML-powered mobile applications. Our analysis reveals how multi-user model building with Co-ML, in the context of student-driven projects created during the summer camp, supported development of DDPs including incorporating data diversity, evaluating model performance, and inspecting for data quality. Additionally, we found that students' attempts to improve model performance often prioritized learnability over class balance. Through this work, we highlight how the combination of collaboration, model testing interfaces, and student-driven projects can empower learners to actively engage in exploring the role of data in ML systems.

LISA, the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, will usher in a new era in gravitational-wave astronomy. As the first anticipated space-based gravitational-wave detector, it will expand our view to the millihertz gravitational-wave sky, where a spectacular variety of interesting new sources abound: from millions of ultra-compact binaries in our Galaxy, to mergers of massive black holes at cosmological distances; from the beginnings of inspirals that will venture into the ground-based detectors' view to the death spiral of compact objects into massive black holes, and many sources in between. Central to realising LISA's discovery potential are waveform models, the theoretical and phenomenological predictions of the pattern of gravitational waves that these sources emit. This white paper is presented on behalf of the Waveform Working Group for the LISA Consortium. It provides a review of the current state of waveform models for LISA sources, and describes the significant challenges that must yet be overcome., Comment: 239 pages, 11 figures, white paper from the LISA Consortium Waveform Working Group, invited for submission to Living Reviews in Relativity, updated with comments from community

In this work, we compute multi-field core and halo properties in wave Dark Matter models. We focus on the case where Dark Matter consists of two light (real) scalars, interacting gravitationally. As in the single-field Ultra Light Dark Matter (ULDM) case, the scalar field behaves as a coherent BEC with a definite ground state (at fixed total mass), often referred to in the literature as a gravitational soliton. We establish an efficient algorithm to find the ground and excited states of such two-field systems. We then use simulations to investigate the gravitational collapse and virialization, starting from different initial conditions, into solitons and surrounding halo. As in the single-field case, a virialized halo forms with a gravitational soliton (ground state) at the center. We find some evidence for an empirical relation between the soliton mass and energy and those of the host halo. We use this to then find a numerical relation between the properties of the two. Finally, we use this to address the issue of alleviating some of the tensions that single-field ULDM has with observational data, in particular, the issue of how a galaxy's core and radius are related. We find that if galaxies of different masses have similar percentages of the two species, then the core-radius scaling tension is not addressed. However, more general possibilities occur if the relative abundance of species in each halo correlates with the total mass of the galaxy. If this is the case, the model predicts several other phenomenological signatures., Comment: 35 pages, 18 figures. V2: added references. V3: Extended and generalized the analysis of section 4

Recent experimental developments in multimode nonlinear photonic circuits (MMNPC), have motivated the development of an optical thermodynamic theory that describes the equilibrium properties of an initial beam excitation. However, a non-equilibrium transport theory for these systems, when they are in contact with thermal reservoirs, is still {\it terra incognita}. Here, by combining Landauer and kinematics formalisms we develop a one-parameter scaling theory that describes the transport in one-dimensional MMNPCs from a ballistic to a diffusive regime. We also derive a photonic version of the Wiedemann -Franz law that connects the thermal and power conductivities. Our work paves the way toward a fundamental understanding of the transport properties of MMNPC and may be useful for the design of all-optical cooling protocols., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures && Supplementary Material (6 pages, no figures)

Ultra-cool dwarf stars are abundant, long-lived, and uniquely suited to enable the atmospheric study of transiting terrestrial companions with JWST. Amongst them, the most prominent is the M8.5V star TRAPPIST-1 and its seven planets. While JWST Cycle 1 observations have started to yield preliminary insights into the planets, they have also revealed that their atmospheric exploration requires a better understanding of their host star. Here, we propose a roadmap to characterize the TRAPPIST-1 system -- and others like it -- in an efficient and robust manner. We notably recommend that -- although more challenging to schedule -- multi-transit windows be prioritized to mitigate the effects of stellar activity and gather up to twice more transits per JWST hour spent. We conclude that, for such systems, planets cannot be studied in isolation by small programs, but rather need large-scale, jointly space- and ground-based initiatives to fully exploit the capabilities of JWST for the exploration of terrestrial planets.

Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies ,General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
We consider the steady-state density and velocity dispersion profiles of collisionless matter around a Schwarzschild black hole (BH) and its associated rate of accretion onto the BH. We treat matter, which could be stars or dark matter particles, whose orbits are {\it unbound} to the BH, but still governed by its gravitational field. We consider two opposite spatial geometries for the matter distributions: an infinite, 3D cluster and a 2D razor-thin disk, both with zero net angular momentum. We demonstrate that the results depend critically on the adopted geometry, even in the absence of angular momentum. We adopt a simple monoenergetic, isotropic, phase-space distribution function for the matter as a convenient example to illustrate this dependence. The effect of breaking strict isotropy by incorporating an unreplenished loss cone due to BH capture of low-angular momentum matter is also considered. Calculations are all analytic and performed in full general relativity, though key results are also evaluated in the Newtonian limit. We consider one application to show that the rate of BH accretion from an ambient cluster can be significantly less than that from a thin disk to which it may collapse, although both rates are considerably smaller than Bondi accretion for a (collisional) fluid with a similar asymptotic particle density and velocity dispersion (i.e., sound speed)., Comment: 10 pages, no figs, to be published in Phys. Recently we found compelling evidence for a gravitational wave background with Hellings and Downs (HD) correlations in our 15-year data set. These correlations describe gravitational waves as predicted by general relativity, which has two transverse polarization modes. However, more general metric theories of gravity can have additional polarization modes which produce different interpulsar correlations. In this work we search the NANOGrav 15-year data set for evidence of a gravitational wave background with quadrupolar Hellings and Downs (HD) and Scalar Transverse (ST) correlations. We find that HD correlations are the best fit to the data, and no significant evidence in favor of ST correlations. While Bayes factors show strong evidence for a correlated signal, the data does not strongly prefer either correlation signature, with Bayes factors $\sim 2$ when comparing HD to ST correlations, and $\sim 1$ for HD plus ST correlations to HD correlations alone. However, when modeled alongside HD correlations, the amplitude and spectral index posteriors for ST correlations are uninformative, with the HD process accounting for the vast majority of the total signal. Using the optimal statistic, a frequentist technique that focuses on the pulsar-pair cross-correlations, we find median signal-to-noise-ratios of 5.0 for HD and 4.6 for ST correlations when fit for separately, and median signal-to-noise-ratios of 3.5 for HD and 3.0 for ST correlations when fit for simultaneously. While the signal-to-noise-ratios for each of the correlations are comparable, the estimated amplitude and spectral index for HD are a significantly better fit to the total signal, in agreement with our Bayesian analysis., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Subwavelength gratings, with period shorter than the incident wavelength, have garnered significant attention in the fields of photonics, optoelectronics, and image sensor technology. In this research, we delve into the scattering characteristics of these gratings by employing the 2-dimensional point dipole approximation. Additionally, we propose a version of perturbation theory that relies on Fourier decomposition to obtain analytical expressions for the near-field behavior. We validate our models using numerical techniques such as boundary and finite element analysis. Notably, we explore how parameters like the grating period and slit width affect field enhancements. We demonstrate that our models produce qualitatively accurate results even for narrow slits., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, bibliography 29 sources

HyperNetX (HNX) is an open source Python library for the analysis and visualization of complex network data modeled as hypergraphs. Initially released in 2019, HNX facilitates exploratory data analysis of complex networks using algebraic topology, combinatorics, and generalized hypergraph and graph theoretical methods on structured data inputs. With its 2023 release, the library supports attaching metadata, numerical and categorical, to nodes (vertices) and hyperedges, as well as to node-hyperedge pairings (incidences). HNX has a customizable Matplotlib-based visualization module as well as HypernetX-Widget, its JavaScript addon for interactive exploration and visualization of hypergraphs within Jupyter Notebooks. Both packages are available on GitHub and PyPI. With a growing community of users and collaborators, HNX has become a preeminent tool for hypergraph analysis., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures

Three-dimensional (3D) radiative magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations are the only way to model stellar atmospheres without any ad hoc parameterisations. Several 3D radiative MHD codes have achieved good quantitative agreement with observables for our Sun. We aim to validate the most up-to-date version of the MURaM code against well established quiet Sun measurements, in particular spatially averaged measurements that are relevant for stellar studies. This validation extends the number of solar observables that MURaM can reproduce with high precision. It is also an essential condition for using MURaM to accurately calculate spectra of other cool stars. We simulate the solar upper convection zone and photosphere harbouring a small-scale-dynamo. Using time series of 3D snapshots we calculate the spectral irradiance, limb darkening and selected spectral lines, which we compare to observations. The computed observables agree well with the observations, in particular the limb darkening of the quiet Sun is reproduced remarkably well., Comment: 9 Page, 7 figures, accepted in A&A

The conformal version of the antisymmetric second-order tensor field in four spacetime dimensions does not have gauge invariance extensively discussed in the literature for more than half a century. Our first observation is that, when coupled to fermions, only the conformal version provides renormalizability of the theory at the one-loop level. General considerations are supported by the derivation of one-loop divergences in the fermionic sector, indicating good chances for asymptotic freedom. The arguments concerning one-loop renormalizability remain valid in the presence of self-interactions and the masses for both fermion and antisymmetric tensor fields. In the flat spacetime limit, regardless of the conformal symmetry has gone, there is an expectation to meet renormalizability in all loop orders., Comment: In v2 discussions were extended and added new references, especially to the previous works about conformal operators acting on antisymmetric tensor fields. By now there is substantial evidence that deep learning models learn certain human-interpretable features as part of their internal representations of data. As having the right (or wrong) concepts is critical to trustworthy machine learning systems, it is natural to ask which inputs from the model's original training set were most important for learning a concept at a given layer. To answer this, we combine data attribution methods with methods for probing the concepts learned by a model. Training network and probe ensembles for two concept datasets on a range of network layers, we use the recently developed TRAK method for large-scale data attribution. We find some evidence for convergence, where removing the 10,000 top attributing images for a concept and retraining the model does not change the location of the concept in the network nor the probing sparsity of the concept. This suggests that rather than being highly dependent on a few specific examples, the features that inform the development of a concept are spread in a more diffuse manner across its exemplars, implying robustness in concept formation., Comment: ATTRIB Workshop at NeurIPS 2023

The rapid development and adoption of Generative AI (GAI) technology in the form of chatbots such as ChatGPT and Claude has greatly increased interest in agentic machines. This paper introduces the Autonomous Cognitive Entity (ACE) model, a novel framework for a cognitive architecture, enabling machines and software agents to operate more independently. Drawing inspiration from the OSI model, the ACE framework presents layers of abstraction to conceptualize artificial cognitive architectures. The model is designed to harness the capabilities of the latest generative AI technologies, including large language models (LLMs) and multimodal generative models (MMMs), to build autonomous, agentic systems. The ACE framework comprises six layers: the Aspirational Layer, Global Strategy, Agent Model, Executive Function, Cognitive Control, and Task Prosecution. Each layer plays a distinct role, ranging from setting the moral compass and strategic thinking to task selection and execution. The ACE framework also incorporates mechanisms for handling failures and adapting actions, thereby enhancing the robustness and flexibility of autonomous agents. This paper introduces the conceptual framework and proposes implementation strategies that have been tested and observed in industry. The goal of this paper is to formalize this framework so as to be more accessible., Comment: 34 pages, 12 figures

We present the measurement and characterization of the brighter-fatter effect (BFE) on a NASA Roman Space Telescope development Teledyne H4RG-10 near-infrared detector using laboratory measurements with projected point sources. After correcting for other interpixel non-linearity effects such as classical non-linearity and inter-pixel capacitance, we quantify the magnitude of the BFE by calculating the fractional area change per electron of charge contrast. We also introduce a mathematical framework to compare our results with the BFE measured on similar devices using autocorrelations from flat-field images. We find an agreement of 18 +/- 5% between the two methods. We identify potential sources of discrepancy and discuss future investigations to characterize and address them., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication at the Journal of Instrumentation (JINST)

Quantum Physics - Abstract
A photoelectron, emitted due to the absorption of light quanta as described by the photoelectric effect, is often characterized experimentally by a classical quantity, its momentum. However, since the photoelectron is a quantum object, its rigorous characterization requires the reconstruction of the complete quantum state, the photoelectron's density matrix. Here, we use quantum state tomography to fully characterize photoelectrons emitted from helium and argon atoms upon absorption of ultrashort, extreme ultraviolet light pulses. While in helium we measure a pure photoelectronic state, in argon, spin-orbit interaction induces entanglement between the ion and the photoelectron, leading to a reduced purity of the photoelectron state. Our work shows how state tomography gives new insights into the fundamental quantum aspects of light-induced electronic processes in matter, bridging the fields of photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum information, and offering new spectroscopic possibilities for quantum technology.

The goal of grassroots cryptocurrencies is to provide a foundation with which local digital economies can emerge independently of each other and of global digital platforms and global cryptocurrencies; can form and grow without initial capital or external credit; can trade with each other; and can gradually merge into a global digital economy. Grassroots cryptocurrencies turn mutual trust into liquidity and thus could be a powerful means for 'banking the unbanked'. Grassroots cryptocurrencies have not been provided yet with a payment system, which is the goal of this paper. Here, we present Grassroots Flash, a payment system for grassroots cryptocurrencies that employs the blocklace -- a DAG-like counterpart of the blockchain data structure. We analyze its security (safety, liveness, and privacy) and efficiency, prove that it is indeed grassroots.

High time-bandwidth product signal and idler pulses comprised of independent identically distributed two-mode squeezed vacuum (TMSV) states are readily produced by spontaneous parametric downconversion. These pulses are virtually unique among entangled states in that they offer quantum performance advantages -- over their best classical-state competitors -- in scenarios whose loss and noise break their initial entanglement. Broadband TMSV states' quantum advantage derives from its signal and idler having a strongly nonclassical phase-sensitive cross correlation, which leads to information bearing signatures in lossy, noisy scenarios stronger than what can be obtained from classical-state systems of the same transmitted energy. Previous broadband TMSV receiver architectures focused on converting phase-sensitive cross correlation into phase-insensitive cross correlation, which can be measured in second-order interference. In general, however, these receivers fail to deliver broadband TMSV states' full quantum advantage, even if they are implemented with ideal equipment. This paper introduces the correlation-to-displacement receiver -- a new architecture comprised of a correlation-to-displacement converter, a programmable mode selector, and a coherent-state information extractor -- that can be configured to achieve quantum optimal performance in known sensing and communication protocols for which broadband TMSV provides quantum advantage that is robust against entanglement-breaking loss and noise., Comment: 15+17 pages, 12+9 figures. Quantum Physics - Abstract
High-dimensional quantum entanglement is a cornerstone for advanced technology enabling large-scale noise-tolerant quantum systems, fault-tolerant quantum computing, and distributed quantum networks. The recently developed biphoton frequency comb (BFC) provides a powerful platform for high-dimensional quantum information processing in its spectral and temporal quantum modes. Here we propose and generate a singly-filtered high-dimensional BFC via spontaneous parametric down-conversion by spectrally shaping only the signal photons with a Fabry-Perot cavity. High-dimensional energy-time entanglement is verified through Franson-interference recurrences and temporal correlation with low-jitter detectors. Frequency- and temporal- entanglement of our singly-filtered BFC is then quantified by Schmidt mode decomposition. Subsequently, we distribute the high-dimensional singly-filtered BFC state over a 10 km fiber link with a post-distribution time-bin dimension lower bounded to be at least 168. Our demonstrations of high-dimensional entanglement and entanglement distribution show the capability of the singly-filtered quantum frequency comb for high-efficiency quantum information processing and high-capacity quantum networks., Comment: 30 pages, 4 figures

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology ,Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Analysis of pulsar timing data have provided evidence for a stochastic gravitational wave background in the nHz frequency band. The most plausible source of such a background is the superposition of signals from millions of supermassive black hole binaries. The standard statistical techniques used to search for such a background and assess its significance make several simplifying assumptions, namely: i) Gaussianity; ii) isotropy; and most often iii) a power-law spectrum. However, a stochastic background from a finite collection of binaries does not exactly satisfy any of these assumptions. To understand the effect of these assumptions, we test standard analysis techniques on a large collection of realistic simulated datasets. The dataset length, observing schedule, and noise levels were chosen to emulate the NANOGrav 15-year dataset. Simulated signals from millions of binaries drawn from models based on the Illustris cosmological hydrodynamical simulation were added to the data. We find that the standard statistical methods perform remarkably well on these simulated datasets, despite their fundamental assumptions not being strictly met. They are able to achieve a confident detection of the background. However, even for a fixed set of astrophysical parameters, different realizations of the universe result in a large variance in the significance and recovered parameters of the background. We also find that the presence of loud individual binaries can bias the spectral recovery of the background if we do not account for them., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, version matching published paper

Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
Dense gas in minihalos with masses of $10^6-10^8~M_\odot$ can shield themselves from reionization for $\sim100$ Myr after being exposed to the UV background. These self-shielded systems, often unresolved in cosmological simulations, can introduce strong absorption in quasar spectra. This paper is the first systematic study on the impact of these systems on the Ly$\alpha$ forest. We first derive the HI column density profile of photoevaporating minihalos by conducting 1D radiation-hydrodynamics simulations. We utilize these results to estimate the Ly$\alpha$ opacity from minihalos in a large-scale simulation that cannot resolve self-shielding. When the ionization rate of the background radiation is $0.03\times10^{-12}~{\rm s}^{-1}$, as expected near the end of reionization at $z\sim5.5$, we find that the incidence rate of damped Ly$\alpha$ absorbers increases by a factor of $\sim2-4$ compared to at $z=4.5$. The Ly$\alpha$ flux is, on average, suppressed by $\sim 3\%$ of its mean due to minihalos. The absorption features enhance the 1D power spectrum up to $\sim5\%$ at $k\sim0.1~h~{\rm Mpc}^{-1}~({\rm or}~10^{-3}~{\rm km}^{-1}~{\rm s})$, which is comparable to the enhancement caused by inhomogeneous reionization. The flux is particularly suppressed in the vicinity of large halos along the line-of-sight direction at separations of up to $10~h^{-1}~{\rm Mpc}$ at $r_\perp\lesssim2~h^{-1}~{\rm Mpc}$. However, these effects become much smaller for higher ionizing rates ($\gtrsim0.3\times10^{-12}~{\rm s}^{-1}$) expected in the post-reionization Universe. Our findings highlight the need to consider minihalo absorption when interpreting the Ly$\alpha$ forest at $z\gtrsim5.5$. Moreover, the sensitivity of these quantities to the ionizing background intensity can be exploited to constrain the intensity itself., Comment: 16 pages; 11 figures; Accepted for publication in ApJ

Astrophysics - Solar and Stellar Astrophysics - Abstract
The S-index is a measure of emission in the CaII H & K lines and is a widely used proxy of stellar magnetic activity. It has been assumed until now that the S-index is mainly affected by bright plage regions in the chromosphere. In particular, the effect of starspots on the S-index has been neglected. In this study we revisit this assumption. For this we analyze high-resolution observations of sunspots recorded in the CaII H spectral line at the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope and determine the contrast of spots with respect to the quiet surroundings. We find that the CaII H line core averaged over whole sunspots (including superpenumbrae) is brighter than in the quiet surroundings and that the spot contrast in the line core is comparable to the facular contrast. This allows us to get a first estimate of the influence of spots on the S-index. We show that spots increase the S-index. While this increase is quite small for the Sun, it becomes significantly larger for more active stars. Further, we show that the inclusion of the contribution of spots to the S-index strongly affects the relationship between the S-index and stellar disk area coverages by spots and faculae, and present the new relations., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

The Australian, Chinese, European, Indian, and North American pulsar timing array (PTA) collaborations recently reported, at varying levels, evidence for the presence of a nanohertz gravitational wave background (GWB). Given that each PTA made different choices in modeling their data, we perform a comparison of the GWB and individual pulsar noise parameters across the results reported from the PTAs that constitute the International Pulsar Timing Array (IPTA). We show that despite making different modeling choices, there is no significant difference in the GWB parameters that are measured by the different PTAs, agreeing within $1\sigma$. The pulsar noise parameters are also consistent between different PTAs for the majority of the pulsars included in these analyses. We bridge the differences in modeling choices by adopting a standardized noise model for all pulsars and PTAs, finding that under this model there is a reduction in the tension in the pulsar noise parameters. As part of this reanalysis, we "extended" each PTA's data set by adding extra pulsars that were not timed by that PTA. Under these extensions, we find better constraints on the GWB amplitude and a higher signal-to-noise ratio for the Hellings and Downs correlations. These extensions serve as a prelude to the benefits offered by a full combination of data across all pulsars in the IPTA, i.e., the IPTA's Data Release 3, which will involve not just adding in additional pulsars, but also including data from all three PTAs where any given pulsar is timed by more than as single PTA., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, submitted to ApJ

institutions ,comparative advantage ,pollution - Abstract
This paper proposes that strong financial, judicial, and labor market institutions provide comparative advantage in clean industries, and thereby improve a country’s environmental quality. Five complementary tests support this hypothesis. First, industries that depend on institutions are disproportionately clean. Second, strong institutions increase relative exports in clean industries, even conditional on environmental regulation and factor endowments. Third, an industry’s complexity helps explain the link between institutions and clean goods. Fourth, a quantitative general equilibrium model indicates that strengthening a country’s institutions decreases its pollution through relocating dirty industries abroad, though increases pollution in other countries. Fifth, cross-country differences in the composition of output between clean and dirty industries explain more of the global distribution of emissions than differences in the techniques used for production do. The comparative advantage that strong institutions provide in clean industries gives one under-explored reason why developing countries have relatively high pollution levels.

The quality and inequality of US drinking water investments have gained attention after recent environmental disasters in Flint, Michigan, and elsewhere. We compare the formula-based targeting of subsidized loans provided under the Safe Drinking Water Act with the targeting of congressional drinking water earmarks (``pork barrel'' spending). Earmarks are often critiqued for potentially privileging wealthier and more politically connected communities. We find that earmarks target Black, Hispanic, and low-income communities, partly due to targeting water systems serving large populations. Earmark and loan targeting differ significantly across all the demographics we analyze. Compared to Safe Drinking Water Act loans, earmarks disproportionately target Hispanic communities but not Black or low-income communities.

The present study examines the feasibility of conducting iconic artificial language learning (ALL) experiments in a fieldwork setting. We taught the pictographic language from Shapiro and Steinert-Threlkeld (2023) to speakers of San Martín Peras Mixtec in Oaxaca, Mexico. In a qualitative analysis, we explore whether these speakers display similar word-ordering behaviors to those observed among other populations, while developing insights for future ALL field experiments. We show that iconic ALL offers a promising path forward for including understudied communities in the cognitive sciences.

Adding Fe3O4 nanoparticles to composites of [Fe(Htrz)2(trz)](BF4) spin-crossover polymer and polyaniline (PANI) drives a phase separation of both and restores the molecular structure and cooperative effects of the spin-crossover polymer without compromising the increased conductivity gained through the addition of PANI. We observe an increased on-off ratio for the DC conductivity owing to an enlarged off state resistivity and a 20 times larger AC conductivity of the on state compared with DC values. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles, primarily confined to the [Fe(Htrz)2(trz)](BF4) phase, are ferromagnetically coupled to the local moment of the spin-crossover molecule suggesting the existence of an exchange interaction between both components.
