In the present study, we investigated a possible relationship between the immune response and the oxidative stress (OS) state trend in a group of 12 chickens after intraocular administration of an attenuated Mycoplasma gallisepticum(MG) vaccine. Blood samples were collected at the vaccination time (T0), after 14 (T1) and 21 d (T2). White blood cell count (WBC), differential leucocyte count, and anti-MG antibodies titer (S/P) were studied as immune response indexes. As plasmatic OS biomarkers levels, we considered malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO), superoxide dismutase (SOD), reactive oxygen metabolites derived compounds (d-ROMs), the ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP), and superoxide anion (O2−). After antigenic stimulation, it was observed a significant decrease in monocythemia and a significant increase in thrombocythemia, S/P, MDA, and SOD. Furthermore, subjects with high d-ROMs levels at T0 tended to develop higher cellular mobilization with increases in WBC and lymphocytes accompanied by lower antibody release. It was also observed that the antioxidant components FRAP and SOD were moderately positively correlated to the entity of antibody response.

Metamemory refers to personal knowledge about one's own memory ability that invokes cognitive processes relevant to monitoring and controlling memory. An impaired monitoring system can potentially result in unawareness of symptoms as can occur in addiction denial. Monitoring processes can be assessed with prospective measures such as Feeling-Of-Knowing (FOK) judgments on prediction of future recognition performance, or retrospective confidence judgments (RCJ) made on previous memory performance. Alcoholic patients with amnesia showed poor FOK but intact RCJ. The neuropsychological continuum from mild to moderate deficits in nonamnesic to amnesic alcoholism raised the possibility that alcoholics uncomplicated by clinically-detectable amnesia may suffer anosognosia for their mild memory deficits. Herein 24 abstinent alcoholics and 26 age-matched controls completed an episodic memory paradigm including prospective FOK and retrospective RCJ monitoring measures and underwent 3T structural magnetic resonance imaging. Alcoholics were less accurate than controls in recognition and in assessing their future recognition performance, which was marked by overestimation, but were as accurate as controls on confidence ratings of actual recognition performance. Examination of brain structure–function relations revealed a double dissociation where FOK accuracy was selectively related to insular volume, and retrospective confidence accuracy was selectively related to frontolimbic structural volumes. Impaired FOK with intact RCJ was consistent with mild anosognosia and suggested evidence for neuropsychological and neural mechanisms of unawareness in addiction.

Visible and Near-Infrared (VNIR) reflectance spectroscopy is an important technique with which to map mineralogy and mineralogical variations across planetary surfaces using remotely sensed data. Absorption bands in this spectral range are due to electronic or molecular processes directly related to mineral families or specific compositions. Effusive igneous rocks are widely recognized materials distributed on the surfaces of terrestrial planets, and are formed by primary minerals that can be discriminated by electronic absorptions (e.g. crystal field absorption). In this paper, we review the current knowledge of effusive rock compositions obtained by crystal field absorption in VNIR reflectance spectroscopy, and consider how different petrographical characteristics influence the mineralogical interpretation of such rock compositions. We show that: (1) the dominant mineralogy can be clearly recognized for crystalline material, especially with relatively large crystal dimension groundmass or high porphyritic index; (2) both grain and crystal size are important factors that influence the spectra of effusive rocks where groundmass is generally characterized by microscopic crystals; and (3) glassy dark components in the groundmass reduce or hide the crystal field absorption of mafic minerals or plagioclase otherwise expected to be present.

Lunar highlands are plagioclase-rich terrains produced by crystal floating in a Magma Ocean system. Lunar samples revealed the presence of anorthositic (plagioclase > 90%) samples from the Highlands, associated to more mafic rocks. Recently, remote sensing data permit mapping those terrains with high spatial and spectral resolution allowing detection of plagioclase and mafic crystal field (C.F.) absorptions.

While some organisms, including humans, eliminate oxidized purines to get rid of excess nitrogen, for many others the recovery of the purine ring nitrogen is vital. In the so-called ureide pathway, nitrogen is released as ammonia from allantoate through a series of reactions starting with allantoate amidohydrolase (AAH), a manganese-dependent enzyme found in plants and bacteria. We report NMR evidence that the true product of the AAH reaction is S-ureidoglycine, a nonstandard α-amino acid that spontaneously releases ammonia in vitro. Using gene proximity and logical genome analysis, we identified a candidate gene (ylbA) for S-ureidoglycine metabolism. The proteins encoded by Escherichia coliand Arabidopsis thalianagenes catalyze the manganese-dependent release of ammonia through hydrolysis of S-ureidoglycine. Hydrolysis then inverts the configuration and yields S-ureidoglycolate. S-Ureidoglycine aminohydrolase (UGHY) is cytosolic in bacteria, whereas in plants it is localized, like allantoate amidohydrolase, in the endoplasmic reticulum. These findings strengthen the basis for the known sensitivity of the ureide pathway to Mn availability and suggest a further rationale for the active transport of Mn in the endoplasmic reticulum of plant cells.

The purpose of this paper is, first, to present a systematic cognitive type theory, which we believe can provide a better explanation of the semantic work of iconic signs than the iconic type theory proposed by Groupe μ (1992). The second objective is to present Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) and to show its limitations in accounting for visual metaphoric phenomena. We suggest those constraints can be corrected with the cognitive type model. At the end, we attempt to illustrate how the cognitive type notion can explain visual metaphoric phenomena, taking into account the main aspects of CMT.

Biphenotypic acute leukemia (BAL) is a distinct entity that is immunophenotypically defined by the European Group for the Immunological Classification of Leukemia (EGIL) scoring system and accounts for less than 5% of all acute leukemia cases. Since it is a rare and heterogeneous form of acute leukemia with an allegedly poor outcome, there is no consensus on the best treatment approach in these patients. Our objective was to analyze the biological features and outcome of patients diagnosed with BAL in our institution.

In part I of this paper, a model was proposed to (i) describe the gasification of a spherical carbon black particle by ammonia at high temperature and (ii) explain the activity for the O2electroreduction of catalysts based on Fe and carbon heat-treated in NH3. In this second part, such catalysts, heat-treated for various times in ammonia, are characterized by electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). Electron microscopy shows an average particle diameter of 38 nm for the pristine furnace black, decreasing to 28 nm after the carbon powder loses 90% of its mass. This agrees with model prediction. Raman spectroscopy shows that the experimental width at half-maximum of both the graphitic peak (∼1595−1600 cm-1) and the disorder and graphitic-edge peak (∼1345−1355 cm-1) constantly decreases with increasing weight loss. It is found that the width at half-maximum of these peaks correlates with the fraction of disordered carbon phase calculated by the model. Last, changes of the ToF-SIMS total and Fesignals upon gasification of the carbon black also support the model.

Background: To measure the effect of alcohol abuse on white matter brain macrostructure in women with alcoholism and to determine whether observed abnormalities interact with age.

Background

Aim To present data on cancer prevalence for the areas covered by Italian cancer registries, by using a standardized set of data collection and elaboration criteria, and a single method of data analysis.Subjects and Methods Data on over 250,000 patients with cancer, diagnosed between 1978 and 1992, from 11 Italian cancer registries covering about 12% of the Italian population were collected, validated and analyzed according to the unified protocol of the ITAPREVAL project. The method implemented in the PREVAL computer program was used to provide prevalence estimates for the period covered by cancer registration. The total prevalence for each registry and for the pool of all registries was then estimated by correcting for incomplete observations due to the period in which the registration was not yet activated. All prevalence estimates were for 1992.Results Prevalence figures are presented by cancer site, age, sex, years from diagnosis and registry area. For all malignancies combined, total prevalence ranged from 1,350 per 100,000 inhabitants in Ragusa to 3,650 per 100,000 inhabitants in Romagna, the ratio between these two extremes being 2.7. For the pool of the areas covered by registration cancer prevalence was 3,100 per 100,000 females and 2,250 per 100,000 males. About a third of the total female cases and about half the male cases were diagnosed in the previous five years. Among those aged over 75 years, total prevalence was higher for males than for females: 11,300 versus 8,900 per 100,000 respectively.Conclusions This is the first large-scale estimate of the burden of cancer in Italy. It is also one of the first studies in the world which was aimed to study cancer prevalence in detail. These data are necessary for predicting health service needs and help in the evaluation of differences in health service demand by sex, age and Italian regions.

Aims and Background To describe the cancer prevalence in elderly Italian people and analyze the differences, if any, with the prevalence among younger subjects.Methods & Study Design The cancer prevalence among elderly patients (65 years and over), the three age classes encompassing elderly age (65-74 years, 75-84 years, 85 years and over) and younger patients (0-64 years) was computed using the PREVAL method on the basis of the incident cases over the period 1976-1992 followed up to 31 December 1992 (prevalence reference date). Data were collected by 11 Italian cancer registries.Results The observed prevalence figures for all cancers (except skin epitheliomas), both sexes combined and considering the whole elderly group, were 1,090 and 3,601 cases per 100,000 one and five years since diagnosis, respectively; the prevalence increased up to the 75-84 age group and showed a slight decrease after age 85. With regard to specific cancer sites, in men bladder and prostate had the highest prevalence 5 years from diagnosis (more than 800 cases per 100,000), followed by colon and lung (about 500 cases per 100,000) stomach and rectum (about 300 cases per 100,000); in women breast cancer ranked first (more than 1,000 cases per 100,000), followed by colon (about 350 cases per 100,000), corpus uteri, stomach and rectum cancers (between 150 and 200 cases per 100,000). For all malignancies and the two sexes combined the prevalence figures were about six times higher in the older than in the younger age group.Conclusions These figures confirm the important role of aging in determining the increase in cancer prevalence. The resulting prevalence figures clearly indicate the cancer burden placed on health care services; moreover, the figures will probably increase in the next decades due to a possible improvement in survival and to the dramatic aging of the population, assuming a stable trend for incidence rates. This picture will represent a major challenge for politicians and those dealing with health care planning and social policies in general, especially in the light of the reduction of the available financial resources and the specific features of medical and social needs in the elderly.

Investigations of the structure of polyadenylic acid [poly(A)] in yeast have shown that there are two classes of poly(A) distinguished by size and kinetics of synthesis. Each class is found directly on the 3' end of messenger RNA. One class contains poly(A) molecules ranging from 60 to less than 20 nucleotides long. The longest molecules in this poly(A) class are the first to become labeled when cells are exposed to [3H]adenine. Label then appears in progressively smaller molecules. The second class of poly(A) is about 20 nucleotides long. The length homogeneity of this class and the presence in nuclear DNA of many copies of a polythymidylate sequence which is the same length suggests that this poly(A) is synthesized by transcription from DNA.

Aims and background Italy, like most western populations, is sharply aging and changing its age structure with a striking increase in the oldest segment of the elderly. Since age is related to an exponential growth of cancer incidence rates and to a worsening of prognosis, the progressive aging of the population will constitute, in the future, an issue increasingly more important for public health. The present study is the first effort to present and analyze survival rates in Italian elderly cancer patients in order to provide a starting point for the development of better clinical strategies addressed to the aged.Materials and methods The presented data come from a large data set consisting of survival data relating to 25,798 men and 20,479 women, aged 65–84 years at diagnosis, collected by Italian cancer registries participating in the ITACARE project. Relative survival rates of patients have been calculated by sex, quinquennial age classes and the considered entire age class for overall malignant neoplasms and the 10 most frequent cancer sites in the elderly.Results When all Italian data for all cancers in the 65–84 year age group were pooled, survival rates at 5 years from the diagnosis was 27% and 39% in men and women, respectively. As regards specific sites, survival rates below 50% were observed for lung, stomach and ovary cancer at 1 year from diagnosis. At 5 years from diagnosis, the rates were less than 50% for colon, prostate, cervix, multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and melanoma (only in men). The best survival at 5 years from diagnosis (above 50%) was in women for melanoma and corpus uteri and breast cancer. For all cancers, the prognosis for women was better in each considered age group even though a dramatic decrease in survival with age was observed in both sexes. In general, a similar decline in survival with increasing age characterized all considered specific sites. However, at closer observation, the patterns of a decrease revealed some differences. The ratio between the survival rates of 55–64 vs 65–84 year age class indicated that the sites with the greatest advantage of survival for younger patients (ratio >1.5) were ovary, lung and melanoma (only in men), whereas the least advantage was observed for colon, corpus uteri, breast and prostate. By calendar periods, excluding non-Hodgkin's lymphoma for women, an increase in survival was observed for all considered sites, improving an encouraging successful trend in diagnostic and therapeutic progresses.

In the framework of the ITACARE project, a cooperative investigation conducted on the data from the Italian population-based cancer registries, survival of patients with childhood malignant neoplasms was studied. The study included 1,768 cases diagnosed at age 0–14 plus 29 osteosarcoma cases diagnosed at age 15–19. Cases were collected over the period 1978–1989, or more limited periods for some participating registries. A total of 1,138 cases were from the Childhood Cancer Registry of Piedmont and 659 from the registries operating in the provinces of Varese, Parma, Modena, Forlì and Ravenna, Florence, Latina, Ragusa and in the cities of Genova and Torino (the last contributed only for bone neoplasm diagnosed at age 15–19). Overall 5-year survival was 54% for malignancies diagnosed in 1978–1981, 60% for the period 1982–1985, and 69% for the period 1986–1989. The range among registries of 5-year survival for cases diagnosed in 1986–1989 was 55–78%. Most diagnostic categories presented an improved prognosis for the cases diagnosed more recently. For cases diagnosed in 1986–1989, 5-year survival was: 74% for acute lymphatic leukaemia, 40% for acute non-lymphatic leukaemia, 65% for central nervous system neoplasms (76% for astrocytoma, 75% for ependymoma and 85% for medulloblastoma), 66% for osteosarcoma, 55% for Ewing's sarcoma, 87% for Hodgkin's disease, 64% for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, 74% for rhabdomyosarcoma, 64% for neuroblastoma, 78% for nephroblastoma and 100% for retinoblastoma. Italian survival was similar to that observed in other population-based surveys in the UK and USA.

ITACARE is a collaborative study on the survival of Italian cancer patients diagnosed in the period 1978–1989. The study involves 11 Italian population-based cancer registries (CRs) (Firenze, Forlì-Ravenna, Genova, Latina, Modena, Parma, Ragusa, Torino, Varese, the childhood CR of Piedmont and the colorectal CR of Modena), and its principal aim is to identify and analyze possible differences between the areas covered by the CRs. This article describes the ITACARE database. Ten percent of the Italian population is covered by the participating CRs, most of which are located in the northern part of the country. All malignant cancer sites (classified by ICD-9) except skin cancers were included. For bladder cancers, papillomas and transitional cell tumours grade 1 and 2 were also included. Survival data on over 100,000 cases were collected. The principal information variables were sex, date of birth, diagnosis and end of follow-up, life status, ICD-9 code for tumour site, diagnosis modality (clinical, cytologic confirmation, histologic confirmation), ICD-0 morphology code, and tumour stage (grouped into broad categories). Follow-up is active in all registries. All cases were checked systematically for errors and inconsistencies, following which about 0.2% of cases were excluded from the analyses. The percentage of cases microscopically verified, which is an indicator of diagnostic accuracy and data reliability, was higher among patients under 65 years of age (90%), breast cancer patients (92%) and cases covered by the Varese, Torino and Forlì-Ravenna CRs (more than 82%). The percentage of cases known by death certificate only (an indicator of the completeness and quality of registration) was about 3% of total cases and was higher among older patients (4%). Province-specific mortality, used to compute relative survival from cancer (i.e., survival adjusted for competing causes of death), varied according to period of diagnosis, sex and area: the highest mortality was among women of the Ragusa CR (Sicily) and men in northern CRs. Overall mortality decreased during the period, more markedly in the north and among women.

Aims To present a systematic analysis of population-based cancer patient survival in Italy.Methods Population-based survival data have been made available from 10 Italian cancer registries within the ITACARE project. Data, collected and validated using a common protocol, included over 100,000 patients with cancer diagnosed between 1978 and 1989. Multivariate weighted analysis was used to provide relative survival estimates attributable to Italy at national level.Results Results are presented, according to a systematic frame, as the main object of the ITACARE study, involving crude and relative survival figures for adult Italian cancer patients, by age, sex, period of diagnosis and registry area. An estimate with reference to Italy as a whole is also presented by cancer site and for all malignant neoplasms combined. Age-standardized relative survival figures are presented to allow comparisons between Italian registries and also to give a basis for international comparisons with countries involved in the EUROCARE study.Conclusions For the fist time, population-based survival of cancer patients is made available in Italy on a large scale analysis of data from all the Italian cancer registries in a combined action. Estimates of cancer patient survival at a national level in Italy allow proper international comparisons with European countries and give elements of evaluation and discussion on the performance of the Italian health care system.

AbstractThe effects of N+-ion dose and implantation temperature on the mechanical properties of the Al alloy 7075 have been studied. 150 keV N+ions were implanted at temperatures ranging from 373 to 473 K with a current density of 5–15 μA cm−2on previously polished samples. The implanted dose was in the range (1–5)* 1017N cm−2. Microstructural characterization by transmission electron microscopy was carried out on samples implanted at a low temperature with the aim of understanding the microstructural evolution and phase transformation during the implantation process. Vickers microhardness tests and friction coefficient measurements showed a significant improvement in the mechanical behaviour of the alloy after the treatment. The microstructure of the surface layer indicates the dissolution of the existing precipitates in the first stages of the process. For a small implanted dose, a supersaturated metastable solid solution of N in fcc Al is observed, while for larger implanted concentrations the presence of A1N precipitates of several different crystallographic structures can be observed.

ABSTRACTBackground: 14.9 million women (≥15 years) in Tanzania are at risk of developing cervical cancer.Limited cancer care facilities, prevention programs and sparse knowledge among community members and healthcare workers contribute to late-stage presentation leading to a high mortality rate.Objective: This study aims to scientifically accompany prevention and awareness campaigns (PrevACamp) in northern Tanzania in its real-world settings to obtain (1) a better understanding about cervical cancer and HPV knowledge amongst female PrevACamp participants and (2) to determine the prevalence of pre-cancerous lesions among women undergoing cervical cancer VIA screening.Method: Cross-sectional survey among PrevACamp attendees in two regions in Northern Tanzania. Two data collections tools were used: Questionnaires and clinical data from VIA screening. Data were collected from October 2017 to March 2019.Results: 2,192 PrevACamp attendees were interviewed and 2,224 received VIA screening. There was significant nescience on cervical cancer regardless of education level, resident status, or number of children as well as nescience on HPV in all age groups, especially in urban areas and misconceptions about cancer. Screening revealed VIA positivity rate of 3.1%.Conclusion: There is an alarming lack of knowledge about cervical cancer and, to a lesser Extent, about HPV among the study participants. Having health insurance influenced the level of knowledge significantly. Outreach programs in rural areas appear to target the population in need of health education. Low positive VIA screening results are paralleled with lower HIV rates among the women. We assume that the high density of primary health care coverage in northern Tanzania contributes to these findings..
