Abstract

The Authors examine serum levels of HPRL in basal conditions and after TRH and sulpiride test in 15 patients with endometrial lesions (hyperplasia) and in 15 patients with endometrial adenocarcinoma included in a age range between 44 and 62 years, in which 7 patients present obesity, 10 patients present hypertension and 2 patients are hyperglycemic. The same examination is carried out in a control group of 30 healthy patients. Then the 15 patients with adenocarcinoma and 3 patients with adenomatosa hyperplasia are subjected to surgery and they estimate HPRL levels in endometrium. The results prove that there is no correlation between HPRL plasma levels and endometrium lesions and between endometrium HPRL. The Authors conclude that HPRL does not play a significant role in the pathogenesis of endometrial lesions; use of HPRL plasma levels as a marker of endometrial lesions is not possible.

Abstract

A Kalman filter based approach for the physical retrieval of surface temperature and emissivity from SEVIRI (Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager) infrared observations has been developed and validated against in situ and satellite observations. Validation for land has been provided based on in situ observations from the two permanent stations Evora and Gobabeb operated by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) within the framework of EUMETSAT's Satellite Application Facility on Land Surface Analysis (LSA-SAF). Sea surface retrievals have been intercompared on a broad spatial scale with equivalent satellite products (MODIS or Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer and AVHRR or Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) and ECMWF (European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts) analyses. Results show that for surface temperature the algorithm yields an accuracy of ≈ ± 1.5 °C in case of land and ≈ ± 1.0 °C in case of sea surface. Comparisons with polar satellite instruments over the sea surface show nearly zero temperature bias. Over the land surface the retrieved emissivity follows the seasonal vegetation cycle and allows to identify desert sand regions because of strong reststrahlen bands of Quartz in the SEVIRI channel at 8.7 μm. Considering the two validation stations, we have that emissivity retrieved in SEVIRI channel 10.8 μm over the gravel plains of the Namib desert is in excellent agreement with in situ observations. Over Evora, the seasonal variation of emissivity with vegetation is successfully retrieved and yields emissivity values for green and dry vegetation that are in good agreement with spectral library data. Abstract

The paper illustrates the impact of new water vapor continuum coefficients in the far infrared on spectral cooling rates and integrated atmospheric fluxes. The analysis has been based on data and results obtained within the ECOWAR project (Earth Cooling by Water vapor Radiation). A novel methodology has been developed, implemented and used to retrieve foreign-broadened water vapor continuum absorption coefficients from atmospheric emitted spectral radiance observations in the spectral range 240 to 590 cm-1. The impact of these new coefficients on spectral cooling rates has been assessed. The new coefficients show that the lower troposphere tends to cool down at a rate larger than that predicted by the state-of-art Mlawer, Tobin-Clough, Kneizys, Davies (MT_CKD) continuum. The paper illustrates the new features of the line-by-line radiative transfer model σIASI. The new features are mainly based on the computational optimization of the code and its parallelization. The paper also presents and discusses retrieval for temperature, water vapor and ozone profiles from spectra measured by the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer in the tropical belt. Abstract

The rate of margins involvement and the associated recurrence risk in basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) varies widely in published works (7%-25% and 26%-67%, respectively). This study investigated the risk factors associated with incomplete excision and their relevance in surgical management when positive margins occur in 3957 BCCs excised in 2358 patients. This study performed a multivariate analysis on the database collected from all patients operated for BCCs in the Plastic Surgery Department between 1 January 1992 and 1 September 2007. All data collected (3957 excisions; 2358 individuals) were divided into complete and incomplete excisions groups and analyzed according to 14 variables. The overall rate of incomplete excisions was 14%. Mean age (68), size of the lesion (< 0.5 cm), BCC subtype (nodular with sclerosant aspects, sclerosant and basosquamous), location (face), infiltration depth (hypodermis and deep tissues), recurrent BCC and re-excised BCC were significantly associated with a higher rate of incomplete excision. The recurrence rate for incompletely excised tumours was 26.8%, while only 5.9% for completely excised tumours. Most of the risk factors associated to incomplete excision can be identified before surgery (by simple anamnesis and clinical examination) and successfully overcome by appropriate surgical margins. The high recurrence rate after incomplete excision and the low patient compliance towards follow-up should lead the surgeon to early re-excise residual cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
