Abstract

The dielectric constants of various mixtures of N-methylpropionamide (NMP) and N-ethylpropionamide (NEP) were measured. Mixtures in which the mole fraction of NMP was 0.80 easily became a supercooled liquid below -50°C and its dielectric constant showed a maximum value of 660 at -77°C.

Abstract

Static-pressure dependence of the susceptibility and the magnetization of an organic spin-Peierls substance, MEM-[TCNQ] 2 , was measured by using a SQUID susceptometer with a hand-made pressure cell in the temperature range of 2-150K and at the pressure up to 8kbar. We have found that the susceptibility of the substance changes significantly with increasing static-pressure. As the pressure increases, the susceptibility at low temperatures increases as if free magnetic spins are produced and it overwhelms the spin-Peierls transition. Above lkbar, there are no marks of spin-Peierls transition and the susceptibility at low temperatures follows the Curie-Weiss law. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Precise X-ray determinations of the crystal structure of the 1:2 complex of N-ethyl- N-methyl­morpholinium and 7,7,8,8-tetra­cyano- p-quinodi­methanide, abbreviated as MEM-TCNQ or MEM(TCNQ)2 (C7H16NO+·2C12H4N40.5−), have been performed at 293 and at 10 K. Evidence for the expected spin-Peierls transition at 19 K is not found, and this may follow from radiation damage to the crystal or from insufficient equipment sensitivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This volume is a collection of papers from the third meeting of the international symposium on mesoscopic superconductivity and spintronics. Research on quantum information technology has advanced a great deal since the previous meeting. Mesoscopic physics, such as spins in nano-scale semiconductor structures, micro-fabricated superconducting junctions and extraordinary metal contacts have now been not only theoretically but also experimentally established as important solid-state elements of quantum information devices. The book also contains some papers on information theory from the viewpoint of quantum algorithms, indicating that further collaboration between physics and computer science promises to produce fruitful results in quantum information technology.

Abstract

The realizations of physical systems whose quantum states can be directly manipulated have been pursued for experiments on fundamental problems in quantum mechanics and implementations of quantum information devices. Micro-fabricated superconducting systems and electronic spins are among the most promising candidates. This book contains the newest and most advanced research reports on such materials, called “Mesoscopic Superconductivity” and “Spintronics”. The former includes superconductor-semiconductor hybrid systems, very small Josephson junctions, and micron-size SQUIDs. The latter includes the control of spin transports in semiconductor heterostructures, nano-scale quantum dots, and spin injections.
