198. Tapping the Economic Potential of Chickpea in Sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract

Chickpea is a nutrition-rich, cropping-system friendly, climate-resilient, and low-cost production crop. It has large economic potential in the sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) region, where it currently accounts for only approximately half a million hectares of the approximately 12 million hectares of total chickpea production land worldwide. This review highlights the opportunities for promoting chickpea production and marketing to tap the vast economic potential in SSA. The region can potentially produce chickpea on approximately 10 million hectares, possibly doubling the global production, and the region could become one of the highest consumption geographies of this healthy crop. Chickpea could easily be integrated into existing cropping systems including rice-fallows and cereal monocropping systems. Successful cases studies of the crop in the region are highlighted. The region could tap into the potential at scale through intervention in the agricultural policy environment and development and promotion of improved chickpea production technologies supported by well-organized extension services and sustainable seed systems. These interventions could be complemented with value addition and product quality improvementsÍ for SSA chickpea to benefit from high-value markets.

Abstract

Background. In patients who are liable to the risk of pulmonary aspiration, airway control is the primary and first concern for the anesthetists both in emergency and elective surgical procedures. Rapid sequence induction is universally required in any occasion of emergent endotracheal intubation needed for unfasted patients or patients’ fasting status is unknown. Methods. institutional-based prospective observational study was conducted from December 2017 to January 2018 in all elective and emergency adult or pediatric patients with a risk of pulmonary aspiration who were operated under general anesthesia with rapid sequence induction and intubation during the audit period. Result. A total of 35 patients were operated during the study period. Of these, 31 (88.57%) patients were adults and 4 (11.43%) patients were pediatrics. Most of the patients were emergency (29 (82.857%)), and the rest were elective (6 (17.142%)). Conclusion. Most anesthetists were good at preparing all available monitoring and drugs, making sure that IV line is well-functioning, preparing suction with a suction machine, preoxygenation, application of cricoid pressure, and checking the position of the ETT after intubation was performed. Preparing difficult airway equipment during planning of rapid sequence induction and intubation, giving roles and told to proceed their assigned role for the team, attempt to ventilate with a small tidal volume, and routine use of bougie or stylet to increase the chance of success of intubation needed improvement.

200. Predictions of Transient Vector Solution Fields with Sequential Deep Operator Network

Abstract

The Deep Operator Network (DeepONet) structure has shown great potential in approximating complex solution operators with low generalization errors. Recently, a sequential DeepONet (S-DeepONet) was proposed to use sequential learning models in the branch of DeepONet to predict final solutions given time-dependent inputs. In the current work, the S-DeepONet architecture is extended by modifying the information combination mechanism between the branch and trunk networks to simultaneously predict vector solutions with multiple components at multiple time steps of the evolution history, which is the first in the literature using DeepONets. Two example problems, one on transient fluid flow and the other on path-dependent plastic loading, were shown to demonstrate the capabilities of the model to handle different physics problems. The use of a trained S-DeepONet model in inverse parameter identification via the genetic algorithm is shown to demonstrate the application of the model. In almost all cases, the trained model achieved an $R^2$ value of above 0.99 and a relative $L_2$ error of less than 10\% with only 3200 training data points, indicating superior accuracy. The vector S-DeepONet model, having only 0.4\% more parameters than a scalar model, can predict two output components simultaneously at an accuracy similar to the two independently trained scalar models with a 20.8\% faster training time. The S-DeepONet inference is at least three orders of magnitude faster than direct numerical simulations, and inverse parameter identifications using the trained model is highly efficient and accurate.
