Search

To (1) identify interventional research topics in traumatic brain injury (TBI) rehabilitation, (2) describe potential knowledge gaps, and (3) uncover further needs for interventional TBI rehabilitation research for patients and families. We searched three databases (2006–2019) and screened 1552 non-duplicate articles. Titles and abstracts were screened for relevance, yielding 754 articles for full-text review. Of these, 425 were included, as relevant to the purpose of the scoping review. Among articles on TBI rehabilitation, the majority (71.8%) applied quantitative methodology; of these only 19.7% were randomized controlled trials. Severe TBI was described more often than mild/moderate TBI populations. Hospital vs community/home rehabilitation was 55.1% vs 37.2%; rehabilitation at workplace/school was described in only 4.5% articles, while in 7.2% the setting was undisclosed. Of 83 articles describing work/education, only 14 were in a work/school context. An additional focus in the work/education articles was activities of daily living (n = 28), cognition (n = 33) and emotions (n = 23), few targeted family or network. The main attention of interventional TBI rehabilitation studies has been on severe TBI and long-term rehabilitation. Gaps identified were rehabilitation of mild/moderate TBI populations, older populations, acute/sub-phase rehabilitation, return to work issues and studies including the family. A substantial number of interventional studies exist to guide long-term rehabilitation after traumatic brain injury with focus on daily life, physical, emotional and cognitive functioning. We recommend a stronger focus in the clinic on the following groups; people with mild/moderate traumatic brain injury, people in the acute and sub-acute phase, and older people with traumatic brain injury. Issues that target challenges returning to work should be addressed, while they are of importance to patients and families. Emphasis should be put on continuity of care and peer-support. Accurately understanding the photosynthesis of mangroves is essential for inferring how climate change influences the terrestrial and marine carbon cycle. However, photosynthesis of mangroves remains poorly understood due to the difficulty of in situ flux data acquisition. Remote sensing of solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) provides a direct proxy for photosynthesis which would be an effective tool for detecting mangrove photosynthesis. We presented the first SIF observations from both ground and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms in a mangrove forest and provided an exploratory attempt to downscale SIF from canopy level to leaf level to better characterize photosynthesis. We found that relationships between mangrove photosynthesis and SIF vary by light condition, which exhibited a negative correlation under low-light condition but positive correlation under high-light condition. Moreover, we found that inter-species differences affect the relationship between photosynthesis and SIF in mangroves. Relationship exhibited more clear-cut correlation by distinguishing mangrove species than considering them as a whole. Our results would help to better understand the photosynthesis mechanism of the mangrove forests and fills the gap of the relationship between SIF and photosynthesis in subtropical and tropical wetland ecosystems. This essay reviews the ontological status of digital material in industrial operations and conditions it provides for innovation. It recognises the semiotic quality of digital material and the critical role of von Neumann architecture as to show that digital innovation advances through a three pronged, largely orthogonal process of embedding- a process of interlacing elements of one innovation domain to that of another. Three types of embedding define digital innovation: operational embedding (code-computer), virtual embedding (real-world phenomena-code) and contextual embedding (performing code-social setting). Each constitutes a 'leverage point' for further expanding digital innovation and they interact dynamically while industrial innovation is defined by a static virtual and contextual embedding. The processes that underlie innovation in the two regimes follow differential logics. In industrial regime (1) discover-synthesise and (2) manufacture-distribute activities combine to form the leverage points for innovation. In digital regime 1) discover product or behaviour (ideation); 2) abstract to digital material (virtualise); 3) Implement and replicate digital material (variations in operational/contextual embedding); and 4) Deliver product and/or behaviour (perform digital material) activities form the leverage points for innovation enabling wider, open, and faster innovation with a distinct value logic. This meta-analysis is intended to evaluate the reliability of evidences published in current regenerative endodontic publications in a critical way. This meta-analysis is used to summarize and analyze the various clinical and radiographic findings associated with nonvital immature permanent teeth which have been treated with regenerative endodontic techniques. We also intend to significantly evaluate the worth of facts provided in the previous published literature. A structured electronic search by authors was undertaken in August 2020 using MEDLINE and PubMed search engine. The chosen parameters studied in this systematic review were presented in flowcharts and were summarized. We observed a good accomplishment rates in terms of survival of the treated tooth and also in resolution of any associated pathology in the apical areas; on contrary, our results in relation to apex closure along with constant root development, our findings from various studies were quiet variable. Regenerative endodontic procedures are constantly being restructured and enhanced to benefit present-day dentistry in all likely ways. Still, many factors that are important for the success of regenerative endodontic treatment outcomes still remain unexplained. There are still numerous gaps in our expertise at the present stage of this study.

The leaf maximum carboxylation rate (Vcmax) is a key parameter in modeling plant photosynthesis. The rapid and accurate acquisition of Vcmax at large scales can improve understanding of global vegetation productivity and the terrestrial carbon cycle. In this article, we assessed the retrieval of Vcmax from satellite data by validating these data using flux observations made at eight crop and grass sites. Firstly, an empirical model applicable to C3 species that was based on the semimechanistic linkage between leaf chlorophyll and Vcmax was used to derive Vcmax from satellite data. Then, using vegetation, soil, and meteorological variables as inputs, the SCOPE model was used to estimate Vcmax from half-hourly or hourly flux observations at each site. The estimates of Vcmax were assessed by comparing the simulated gross primary production (GPP) against the observed GPP: that is, the Vcmax value corresponding to its simulated diurnal GPP data with minimum root-mean-square error (RMSE) was selected as the inverted Vcmax value. Finally, the Vcmax values retrieved from MERIS and Sentinel-3 OLCI satellite data were validated using the in situ flux site observations. The results showed that the estimates of Vcmax based on satellite data successfully captured the seasonal variations in Vcmax retrieved from the tower-based GPP data, giving a mean RMSE value of 15.30 μmol m−2 s−1. Our results support the retrieval of Vcmax from satellite data based on the link with leaf chlorophyll content and show that there was good agreement between Vcmax derived from remote sensing and flux data.

Negation handling is an important sub-task in Sentiment Analysis. Negation plays a significant role in written text. Negation terms in sentence often changes the polarity of entire sentence from positive to negative or vice versa, resulting in the opposite meaning of the sentence than what is observed by the machine learning based linguistic model. As automatic opinion mining has become very important in this digital era, proper handling of negation term is the need of the hour. In any natural language negations can be formulated both explicitly or implicitly while their use is very much domain-specific. Existing negation handling techniques follow rule-based approach and mainly used in medical domain. Due to the complex syntactic structure of negation, it is hard to build general purpose machine learning based negation handling model on user review or conversational text data. In this paper, we investigate negation components i.e., cue and scope in a sentence which determine the polarity shift in sentence. We propose LSTM based deep neural network model for negation handling task where the model automatically learns the negation features from labeled input training dataset. We used ConanDoyle story corpus for model training and testing, which is pre-annotated with negation information. The proposed model first identify negation cues in each sentence and then using bidirectional LSTM extracts the relationship between cue and other words to identify scope of the cue in sentences. We derived word level features for model training to determine correct polarity of the sentence. Result shows that the LSTM based nonlinear language models perform comparatively better than the traditional state of the art SVM, HMM or CRF based models. BiLSTM achieved best result, F1 measures 93.34%, outperform traditional rule based model in negation handling task.

The new IEEE Journal of Microwaves strives to be a broad-scoped publication serving the whole of the microwave community, both within and beyond the IEEE. This opening article outlines our philosophy and content, presents our editorial team, and introduces our special Inaugural Issue.

Introduction: The world has faced the pandemic of COVID-19 in the march of 2020 and still it continues to effect in 2021. Hence, in the present study we aim to evaluate the gulps in the research so that certain recommendations can be made for the future research. We conducted a scoping review of the COVID meta-analysis. Materials and Methods: Online data was collected from the search engines of EBSCO, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus. The searched terms were COVID-19, CORONA, SARS-CoV-2, clinical features, Wuhan, etc. The study articles were collected that from January 2020 to February 2021. Based on the PRISMA guidelines, the meta-analysis was performed. Results: In the present study, we finalized 316 articles. On February 2020, the first article was published. We observed a spike in the meta-analysis later on. Most of the meta-analysis were issued in the virology and infection magazines. As expected, the majority studies were from Wuhan. The other countries that published the meta-analysis were the USA, the UK, and Italy. The studies included in each meta-analysis were nearly 25 and the subjects were approximately 16 thousand. However, we noticed a poor quality in majority of these meta-analysis and

It is well known that the scope of quantifiers is not uniform: different quantifiers exhibit different scope properties. This paper examines the scope of a relatively understudied quantificational DP—relative measure phrases that contain proportional number expressions like 40%, one third, half, etc and relate one quantity to another. Based on relative measurement constructions in Mandarin, I observe that a relative measure phrase exhibits distinct scope patterns when it participates in the so-called ‘conservative’ and ‘non-conservative’ reading (terminology from Ahn & Sauerland (2017)). I pursue a decompositional analysis to account for the scopal difference: a relative measure phrase is decomposed into a degree quantifier denoted by the proportional number expression and a counting quantifier. A proportional number expression can take DP-internal scope or DP-external scope. Different scope taking strategies face different constraints, which in turn give rise to distinct scope possibilities.

Uncertainty has become a challenge in project management during the age of the Covid-19 pandemic. Project management required a more flexible and dynamic approach; therefore, it is believed that Agile project management could provide a solution to this problem. Agile has been widely used in multiple industry areas as a practical and flexible approach in project management practices. In the project, the scope is considered one aspect that can directly affect the budget and timing. Unfortunately, it seems to be one of the most neglected domains in Agile and conventional. Agile is recognized for its rapid improvement as well as its willingness to embrace change. However, uncontrolled change can potentially delay and make the project overspend. This paper aims to examine the challenges and discover the best practices in handling scope and change in Agile. A systematic literature review (SLR) was carried out through the literature sources, which entailed IEEE Explore, ScienceDirect, Emerald Insight, ProQuest, and Wiley Online. The finding was seven categories, and eighteen issues were found. Then twenty-four best practices were mapped to the challenges. We found the most significant challenge came from People & Organization, User Requirement Prioritization, Over-scope Requirement, and Communication & Coordination. Tiwa, a Tibeto-Burman language of India, has an obligatory wide scope disjunction particle that must outscope the directive force of imperatives. I argue that the behavior of wide scope disjunction in Tiwa provides evidence in favor of theories of imperative meaning that derive directive force from an operator in the semantics proper (e.g., Kaufmann 2012) over purely pragmatic theories (e.g., Portner 2004 , 2007). Occupational therapy (OT) is a global health profession that promotes participation in meaningful occupations to enhance well-being, particularly for persons with disabilities. Occupational therapy is relatively new in many African countries and there is limited research regarding the role of OT in this region. Thus, this study aims to understand the role and scope of OT in Africa by exploring its unique contribution to healthcare and cultural considerations for practicing OT in various African contexts. We conducted an exploratory qualitative descriptive study involving semi-structured interviews with 15 occupational therapists from 11 African countries. Interview questions focused on participants' work activities, rewards and challenges of their work, and perceived contribution to healthcare. We audio-recorded and transcribed interviews followed by inductive thematic analysis. All participants described maintaining multiple roles. Four main themes (with sub-themes) emerged: advocacy (clients and the profession), collaboration (multi-disciplinary team, professional support, and internationally), maintaining core OT principles (occupation, function, participation, empowerment, and holistic practice), and contextual considerations (community-based services, practice approaches, sustainability, cultural norms, and spirituality). Occupational therapists working in African contexts have a unique and challenging role involving advocacy and collaboration. They need to maintain core OT values whilst addressing contextual considerations to ensure culturally relevant practice. Occupational therapists have an important role in promoting health and well-being; however, practice is influenced by the cultural context. Occupational therapists in Africa maintain multiple roles, including advocacy for their clients and the profession, and collaboration within a multidisciplinary team, for professional support and internationally. African occupational therapists need to be rooted in core OT principles whilst considering their unique context to ensure culturally relevant practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research Summary: A surprisingly neglected facet of sector evolution is the evolutionary analysis of firms', and thus a sector's, scope. Defining a sector as a group of firms that can change their scope over time, we study the transformation of U.S. banking firms. We undertake a sectoral, population‐wide study of business‐scope transformation, with particular focus on which segments banks expand into. As financial intermediation evolved, a continuously shifting set of activities became associated with "core banking," with scope changing and relatedness itself (measured through coincidence) evolving over the banking sector's history. Banks that expand scope while staying close to this evolving core attain net performance benefits. Identification tests show that the benefits of following the evolving core are robust to endogeneity. Managerial Summary: When does it pay to diversify into new segments? Our study looks at the transformation of U.S. banking firms from 1992 to 2006. Drawing on the full population of banks, we show that, as financial intermediation evolved, a continuously shifting set of activities became associated with "core banking." Bank Holding Companies expanded their scope on aggregate, moving in and out of new segments. We find that while entry into new segments is negatively associated with performance improvement, diversification into this evolving core of activities is positively associated with performance improvement. This redefines "related diversification" and its positive value, showing relatedness changes over time, as a function of the evolution of the sector. We find that our results are robust to selection. Controlling complexity through the use of abstractions is a critical part of problem solving in programming. Thus, becoming proficient with procedural and data abstraction through the use of user-defined functions is important. Properly using functions for abstraction involves a number of other core concepts, such as parameter passing, scope and references, which are known to be difficult. Therefore, this paper aims to study students' proficiency with these core concepts, and students' ability to apply procedural and data abstraction to solve problems. We collected data from two years of an introductory Python course, both from a questionnaire and from two lab assignments. The data shows that students had difficulties with the core concepts, and a number of issues solving problems with abstraction. This study sought to examine the relationship between project risk avoidance and project execution in the Nigerian oil and gas industry. Specifically, the study examined the relationship between project risk avoidance and four components of project execution (budget, quality, schedule and scope) among 51 oil and gas companies operating in Rivers State, Nigeria. To achieve this objective, 102 managing executives were given questionnaires, with 82 questionnaires correctly filled and returned. Data obtained were analysed using mean scores and Spearman’s rank order correlation analysis. The study found that projects risk avoidance was positively and significantly related to all four components of project execution. The main implication of this finding is that oil and gas companies need to invest heavily in innovative technologies and processes that will enhance their ability to avoid risk, thus improving the quality of projects they execute. Secara spesifik, studi tersebut meneliti hubungan antara proyek penghindaran risiko dan empat komponen eksekusi proyek (anggaran, kualitas, jadwal dan ruang lingkup) di antara 51 perusahaan minyak dan gas yang beroperasi di Negara Bagian Rivers, Nigeria. Untuk mencapai tujuan ini, 102 eksekutif pelaksana diberikan kuesioner, dengan 82 kuesioner diisi dan dikembalikan dengan benar. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis menggunakan skor rata-rata dan analisis korelasi urutan peringkat Spearman. Studi tersebut menemukan bahwa penghindaran risiko proyek berhubungan positif dan signifikan dengan keempat komponen pelaksanaan proyek. Implikasi utama dari temuan ini adalah bahwa perusahaan minyak dan gas perlu berinvestasi besar-besaran dalam teknologi dan proses inovatif yang akan meningkatkan kemampuan mereka untuk menghindari risiko, sehingga meningkatkan kualitas proyek yang mereka jalankan.

Fierce local debates throughout the United States surround the equity of admitting students to public schools using academic criteria. Although research has evaluated the central assumption of these debates—that Selective Enrollment Public (SEP) schools enhance the welfare of students who attend them—none has addressed the district-level outcomes associated with these schools. This is important because the selectivity and scope of SEP schools produce tiered school systems (SEP districts). This district-level process, in turn, calls for an analysis of district-level achievement outcomes. To address this gap, I compile an original list of SEP schools using an innovative web scraping procedure. I combine these data with newly available district-level measures of third to eighth grade achievement from the Stanford Education Data Archive. Analyses follow a difference-in-differences design, using grade level as the longitudinal dimension. This approach facilitates a falsification test, using future treated districts, to reject spurious causation. I find evidence of overall slower growth in mean math achievement in SEP districts and for white, black, and Latinx racial/ethnic groups separately. SEP districts also see an increase in the white–Latinx math achievement gap. This work highlights the importance of considering SEP schools as part of a differentiated school system.

Along with the rapid growth of cloud environments, rises the problem of secure data storage-a problem that both businesses and end-users take into consideration before moving their data online. Recently, a lot of solutions have been proposed based either on Symmetric Searchable Encryption (SSE) or Attribute-Based Encryption (ABE). SSE is an encryption technique that offers security against both internal and external attacks. However, since in an SSE scheme, a single key is used to encrypt everything, revoking a user would imply downloading the entire encrypted database and re-encrypt it with a fresh key. On the other hand, in an ABE scheme, the problem of revocation can be addressed. Unfortunately, though, the proposed solutions are based on the properties of the underlying ABE scheme and hence, the revocation costs grow along with the complexity of the policies. To this end, we use these two cryptographic techniques that squarely fit cloud-based environments to design a hybrid encryption scheme based on ABE and SSE in such a way that we utilize the best out of both of them. Moreover, we exploit the functionalities offered by Intel's SGX to design a revocation mechanism and an access control one, that are agnostic to the cryptographic primitives used in our construction.

BACKGROUND: The role of nurse practitioner (NP) emerged in early 1965 when general practitioners began working with nurses. Evidence across the world highlights the benefits achieved by the NP role. The Indian Nursing Council (INC) implemented a country-wide NP in critical care (NPCC) program with the approval of the ministry of health and family welfare (MoHFW) in 2017. The NP role is in its infancy in India. Hence, there is a need to assess the perception among beneficiaries and healthcare personnel. This study was conducted to assess the perception, perceived scope, and potential barriers for developing the role of NPs in India among beneficiaries and healthcare providers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional pilot study was conducted at AIIMS Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India, among 205 participants (84 beneficiaries, 78 nurses, and 43 physicians) using a proportionate stratified random sampling technique. Likert scales and socio-demographic sheets were used to assess the perception, perceived scope of practice, and potential barriers in developing a NP cadre in India. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for analyzing data. RESULTS: The mean age of beneficiaries was 37.98, nurses was 27.58, and physicians was 28.13 years, respectively. 121 (61%) of participants were highly favored, and 77 (38%) were in favor of developing NP cadre in India. They considered it to be necessary, feasible, and acceptable in India. The feasibility and necessity of the perception domain were highly significant (P < 0.001 and P < 0.003, respectively). Nurses (mean ± SD: 35.36 ± 3.55) considered that NPs could have a wide range of practice followed by beneficiaries (mean ± SD: 38.17 ± 3.68) than physicians (mean ± SD: 34.75 ± 5.95). Lack of awareness, the nonexistence of cadre structure, lack of acceptance of the role of physicians, and lack of clear policy were the key potential barriers to develop an NP cadre in India. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, participants had favorable views on employing NPs in India; thus, this role will improve healthcare access for beneficiaries. NPs can carry out a wide range of practices.However, a lack of awareness, no cadre structure, and a lack of a clear policy may hinder the development of the NP cadre in India.

The paper explores engagement as a linguistic category by discussing its defining characteristics. Following work by Evans and colleagues (2018a, b), we discuss issues of scope and the intersubjective distribution of information, as central to the definition of engagement. In addition, we examine the notion of access as a crucial component of engagement marking and we attempt to distinguish access from epistemic authority, which we argue is a prerequisite for the existence of engagement as a linguistic category. Both access and epistemic authority appear central to an analysis of engagement marking, as found in the literature and in the languages of this Special Issue. From an interactional point of view, engagement may be viewed as a form of “stance” (Du Bois 2007), in that it primarily positions the speech participants with respect to talked about events from the point of view of the speaker.

Background: Research and researchers are heavily evaluated, and over the past decade it has become widely acknowledged that the consequences of evaluating the research enterprise and particularly individual researchers are considerable. This has resulted in the publishing of several guidelines and principles to support moving towards more responsible research assessment (RRA). To ensure that research evaluation is meaningful, responsible, and effective the International Network of Research Management Societies (INORMS) Research Evaluation Group created the SCOPE framework enabling evaluators to deliver on existing principles of RRA. SCOPE bridges the gap between principles and their implementation by providing a structured five-stage framework by which evaluations can be designed and implemented, as well as evaluated., Methods: SCOPE is a step-by-step process designed to help plan, design, and conduct research evaluations as well as check effectiveness of existing evaluations. In this article, four case studies are presented to show how SCOPE has been used in practice to provide value-based research evaluation., Results: This article situates SCOPE within the international work towards more meaningful and robust research evaluation practices and shows through the four case studies how it can be used by different organisations to develop evaluations at different levels of granularity and in different settings., Conclusions: The article demonstrates that the SCOPE framework is rooted firmly in the existing literature. In addition, it is argued that it does not simply translate existing principles of RRA into practice, but provides additional considerations not always addressed in existing RRA principles and practices thus playing a specific role in the delivery of RRA. Arunachal Pradesh is rich with networks of drainage systems with enormous wild fish diversity due to varied climatic and topographical features. Most of the streams harbour very alluring small indigenous minnows, loaches, catfishes and barbs that have hardly been exploited for the ornamental fish market. If these aquatic resources are sustainably utilised as a trade commodity, then the pattern of livelihood of the local populace may be uplifted economically. The present investigation was undertaken to establish the market potential of certain indigenous ornamental fishes of Arunachal Pradesh. The survey was conducted during 2019-2020 for 6 months (October-March) based on the feasibility of accessible collections. A total of 52 ornamental fish species under 6 orders and 15 families were documented and collected during the surveys in various streams and rivers. The collection showed that 4 species namely Balitora brucei Gray, 1830, Aborichthys kempi Chaudhuri, 1913, Schistura devdevi Hora, 1935, and Neolissochilus hexagonolepis (McClelland, 1839) were recorded under near threatened; Lepidocephalichthys arunachalensis (Datta & Barman, 1984) and Botia rostrata Günther, 1868, under endangered and vulnerable categories, respectively as per International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) status. A new model for monitoring open science was sent for community consultation this Autumn. It is planned to be used for the first time in early 2022. In this article we discuss how the proposed model resonates with principles of responsible research evaluation using the SCOPE framework. We conclude that even though it is important to monitor the developments in open science on national level, the new model creates a ranking by making comparisons between organisations possible. This can cause optimization as universities try to secure a winning position, which is anticipated to result in unintended consequences. We call for more time for universities to implement all the recommendations already published. Also, we feel there is still a lot to do on the national level so before focusing on universities' maturity in open science, the focus should be on making sure the national environment for open science is more complete. High temporal resolution measurements of solar‐induced chlorophyll fluorescence (F) and the Photochemical Reflectance Index (PRI) encode vegetation functioning. However, these signals are modulated by time‐dependent processes. We tested the applicability of the Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA) for disentangling fast components (physiology‐driven) and slow components (controlled by structural and biochemical properties) from PRI, far‐red F (F760), and far‐red apparent fluorescence yield (Fy∗760). The proof of concept was developed on spectral and flux time series simulated with the Soil Canopy Observation of Photochemistry and Energy fluxes (SCOPE) model. This allowed the evaluation of SSA decomposition against variables that are independent of physiology or are modified by it. Slow SSA‐decomposed components of PRI and Fy∗760 showed high correlations with the reference variables (R2 = 0.97 and 0.96, respectively). Fast SSA‐decomposed components of PRI and Fy∗760 were better related to the physiological reference variables than the original signals during periods when leaf area index (LAI) was above 1 m2 m−2. The method was also successfully applied to predict light‐use efficiency (LUE) from the fast SSA‐decomposed components of PRI (R2 = 0.70) and Fy∗760 (R2 = 0.68) when discarding data modeled with LAI < 1 m2 m−2 and short‐wave radiation Rin < 250 W m−2. The method was then tested on data acquired in a Mediterranean grassland. In this case, the fast SSA‐decomposed component of apparent LUE∗ showed a stronger correlation with the fast SSA‐decomposed component of Fy∗760 (R2 = 0.42) than with original Fy∗760 (R2 = 0.01). SSA‐based approach is a promising tool for decoupling physiological information from measurements acquired with automated proximal sensing systems. Plain Language Summary: A fraction of the solar light, which is absorbed by leaves but is not used during photosynthesis, is released through heat or as chlorophyll fluorescence (F), a small emission of energy. Recently, it became possible to indirectly estimate the heat and F by measuring the solar light incoming and reflected from leaves using high‐resolution optical instruments. Heat release can be monitored with the Photochemical Reflectance Index (PRI). While both PRI and F are theoretically linked to the processes associated with photosynthesis, there is a need to remove the disturbing effects from these signals. We tested whether the Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA) method can identify at which temporal scale (e.g., seasonal, diurnal) physiological processes (i.e., photosynthesis) and vegetation biophysical changes (e.g., phenology) drive variability in PRI and F. We applied the method on artificial time series of PRI and F simulated with a model (Soil Canopy Observation of Photochemistry and Energy fluxes [SCOPE]) and found that SSA can successfully split these signals into several components recognized as slow (seasonally changing structure and pigments) and fast (physiological response to stress) processes. The method was also tested on time series collected in a Mediterranean grassland, yielding promising results in detecting physiologically driven changes in apparent fluorescence yield (F normalized by photosynthetically active radiation). We argue that some parenthetical-like clauses in ASL can take both intermediate and maximally wide scope outside of if-clauses and attitude verbs. Specifically, we investigate embedded coordinations, of the form ... SAY [IF Clause-1 Clause-2 PLUS Clause-3, ...], and argue that Clause-2 may in some cases be interpreted with wide and intermediate scope (above SAY, or between SAY and IF). The key to our paradigm is that we mark the scope of IF and SAY with non-manual markers (Brow Raise and/or Role Shift). By exempting Clause-2 from these non-manuals, we force it to outscope the relevant operator, including when it might be expected to create a syntactic island. Wide scope replicates the behavior of parentheticals and appositives in other languages. Intermediate scope is particularly interesting because it mirrors with full clauses the behavior predicted by some theories for some English appositives (Schlenker 2010, to appear a). The ASL data might thus lend support to the existence of a mechanism of high attachment in situ (McCawley 1981, 1998). Our ability to induce the general from the specific is ahallmark of human cognition. Inductive reasoning tasks askparticipants to determine how strongly a set of premises(e.g., Collies have sesamoid bones) imply a conclusion(Dogs have sesamoid bones). Here, we present evidencefor an abductive theory of inductive reasoning, accordingto which inductive strength is determined by treating theconclusion as an explanation of the premises, andevaluating the quality of that explanation. Two inductivereasoning studies found two signatures of explanatoryreasoning, previously observed in other studies: (1) anevidential asymmetry between positive and negativeevidence, with observations casting doubt on a hypothesisgiven more weight than observations in support; and (2) alatent scope effect, with ignorance about potential evidencecounting against a hypothesis. These results suggest thatinductive reasoning relies on the same hypothesisevaluation mechanisms as explanatory reasoning

Abstract Improving the accuracy of protein secondary structure prediction has been an important task in bioinformatics since it is not only the starting point in obtaining tertiary structure in hierarchical modeling but also enhances sequence analysis and sequence-structure threading to help determine structure and function. Herein we present a model based on DSPRED classifier, a hybrid method composed of dynamic Bayesian networks and a support vector machine to predict 3-state secondary structure information of proteins. We used the SCOPe (Structural Classification of Proteins-extended) database to train and test the model. The results show that DSPRED reached a Q3 accuracy rate of 82.36% when trained and tested using proteins from all SCOPe classes. We compared our method with the popular PSIPRED on the SCOPe test datasets and found that our method outperformed PSIPRED.
