- Abstract
Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) is a large optimized stellarator (B=2.5T, V=30m3) aiming at demonstrating the reactor relevance of the optimized stellarators. In 2015 W7-X will begin its first operation phase (OP1.1) with five inertially cooled inboard limiters made of graphite. Assuming the heat loads can be spread out evenly between the limiters, 1 second discharges at 2 MW of ECRH heating power could be run in OP1.1. The expected plasma parameters will be sufficient to demonstrate the readiness of the installed diagnostics and even to run a first physics program. The diagnostics available for this first operation phase, including some special limiter diagnostics, and their capabilities are being presented.

- Abstract
Since the installation of an ITER-like wall, the JET programme has focused on the consolidation of ITER design choices and the preparation for ITER operation, with a specific emphasis given to the bulk tungsten melt experiment, which has been crucial for the final decision on the material choice for the day-one tungsten divertor in ITER. Integrated scenarios have been progressed with the re-establishment of long-pulse, high-confinement H-modes by optimizing the magnetic configuration and the use of ICRH to avoid tungsten impurity accumulation. Stationary discharges with detached divertor conditions and small edge localized modes have been demonstrated by nitrogen seeding. The differences in confinement and pedestal behaviour before and after the ITER-like wall installation have been better characterized towards the development of high fusion yield scenarios in DT. Post-mortem analyses of the plasma-facing components have confirmed the previously reported low fuel retention obtained by gas balance and shown that the pattern of deposition within the divertor has changed significantly with respect to the JET carbon wall campaigns due to the absence of thermally activated chemical erosion of beryllium in contrast to carbon. Transport to remote areas is almost absent and two orders of magnitude less material is found in the divertor.

The status of the diagnostic developments for the quasistationary operable stellarator Wendelstein 7-X (maximum pulse length of 30 min at 10 MW ECRH heating at 140 GHz) will be reported on. Significant emphasis is being given to the issue of ECRH stray radiation shielding of in-vessel diagnostic components, which will be critical at high density operation requiring O2 and OXB heating.

- Abstract
Beam emission spectroscopy on thermal helium is used at the TEXTOR tokamak as a reliable method to obtain radial profiles of electron temperature T-e(r, t) and electron density ne(r, t). In this paper the experimental realization of this method at TEXTOR and the status of the atomic physics employed as well as the major factors for the measurement's accuracy are evaluated. On the experimental side, the hardware specifications are described and the impact of the beam atoms on the local plasma parameters is shown to be negligible. On the modeling side the collisional-radiative model (CRM) applied to infer ne and Te from the measured He line intensities is evaluated. The role of proton and deuteron collisions and of charge exchange processes is studied with a new CRM and the impact of these so far neglected processes appears to be of minor importance. Direct comparison to Thomson scattering and fast triple probe data showed that for high densities ne > 3.5 x 10(19) m(-3) the T-e values deduced with the established CRM are too low. However, the new atomic data set implemented in the new CRM leads in general to higher Te values. This allows us to specify the range of reliable application of BES on thermal helium to a range of 2.0 x 10(18) < n(e) < 2.0 x 10(19) m(-3) and 10eV < T-e < 250eV which can be extended by routine application of the new CRM.

In magnetically confined fusion plasmas controlled gas injection is crucial for plasma fuelling as well as for various diagnostic applications such as active spectroscopy. We present a new, versatile system for the injection of collimated thermal gas beams into a vacuum chamber. This system consists of a gas pressure chamber, sealed by a custom made piezo valve towards a small capillary for gas injection. The setup can directly be placed inside of the vacuum chamber of fusion devices as it is small and immune against high magnetic fields. This enables gas injection close to the plasma periphery with high duty cycles and fast switch on/off times ≥ 0.5 ms. In this work, we present the design details of this new injection system and a systematic characterization of the beam properties as well as the gas flowrates which can be accomplished. The thin and relatively short capillary yields a small divergence of the injected beam with a half opening angle of 20°. The gas box is designed for pre-fill pressures of 10 mbar up to 100 bars and makes a flowrate accessible from 10
18 part/s up to 1023 part/s. It hence is a versatile system for both diagnostic as well as fuelling applications. The implementation of this system in ASDEX Upgrade will be described and its application for line ratio spectroscopy on helium will be demonstrated on a selected example. The Dynamic Ergodic Divertor (DED) in the tokamak TEXTOR is a new versatile tool to study the impact of magnetic field perturbations on transport in magnetically confined plasmas and to investigate its potential for power and particle exhaust. The DED consists of 16 perturbation coils and 2 compensation coils wound helically around the torus on the inboard side which produce resonant magnetic perturbations centred at the q=3 surface. A novel and unique feature of the DED is its capability to rotate the perturbation field with frequencies up to 10 kHz. The installation allows for mode numbers m/n=12/4, 6/2 or 3/1. Most important to influence the plasma edge is the 12/4 configuration with its considerably smaller penetration depth in comparison to the 3/1 configuration which allows for an ergodization of the plasma up to q=2 surface. The perturbed volume consists of an ergodic region with overlapping magnetic islands, which is characterized by very long connection length to the divertor target tiles, and a so called laminar zone, where the connection length to the target is short. In the laminar zone a helical divertor structure is established. In this contribution we give an overview of studies to investigate the impact of the DED on transport in both the plasma edge and the core in TEXTOR. The perturbation by the DED results in significant changes of the plasma edge structure, and the formation of the ergodic and the laminar zones has been observed based on divertor spectroscopy and measurements of density and temperature profiles of electrons and impurity ions at various poloidal and toroidal locations. All these observations correspond well to the topology of the perturbed magnetic field as calculated with field line tracing and mapping techniques. Along with the formation of the perturbed edge region with open field lines, measurements of the plasma rotation indicate a reversal of the electric field in this region and the possibility of an increased shear across its inner border. In this context we discuss experimental findings of a spin up of plasma rotation in the bulk. Furthermore, initial results on impurity transport (screening effects imposed by the DED) and radiation as well as on the impact of the DED on global energy confinement (including the performance in RI- mode discharges) are presented.

Physics::Plasma Physics ,ddc:530 - Abstract
Determination of both the radial and poloidal components of electron density fluctuation parameters in a tokamak edge plasma was achieved by operation of two narrow Li-beams (FWHM approximate to 10 mm at a distance of 100 mm from the source), which were separated by 50 mm. Beams of thermal lithium atoms were generated using a newly developed oven, which provides a long operation time and a high reliability. The lithium atoms, with a mean velocity of approximate to 1.7km s(-l), were injected radially into the plasma edge, where they were excited and ionized by the plasma. The line radiation (resonance transition 2s-2p, lambda = 670.8nm) of the excited atoms was observed, which enables determination of the electron density profiles. The measurements are performed with high temporal (At similar or equal to 2 mu s) and spatial (Delta(r) similar or equal to 1 mm in the radial and Delta(p) similar or equal to 10mm in the poloidal direction) resolution, thus also allowing determination of the fluctuations. This new diagnostic permits studies of both radial and poloidal fluctuation parameters like the correlation length, wavenumber, frequency spectrum, propagation velocity and lifetime. The method can be applied continuously over long discharges without disturbing the plasma. Some figures in this article are in colour only in the electronic version).

- Abstract
With the dynamic ergodic divertor in TEXTOR fundamental effects of the coupling of external magnetic field perturbations to the confined plasma have been studied. The non-linear coupling between external (m/n = 12/4) and internal modes (m/n = 3/1) has been investigated. The critical perturbation field (m/n = 3/1) for the excitation of an m/n = 2/1 tearing mode depends not only on the magnitude but also on the direction of the toroidal angular momentum input by neutral beam injection (NBI). Below the excitation threshold of this mode a toroidal spin-up of the plasma has been observed, which only depends on the strength of the perturbation field. It is independent of both the rotation direction of the external perturbation field and the toroidal angular momentum supplied by the NBI.

- Abstract
Analysis and understanding of wall erosion, material transport and fuel retention are among the most important tasks for ITER and future devices, since these questions determine largely the lifetime and availability of the fusion reactor. These data are also of extreme value to improve the understanding and validate the models of the in vessel build-up of the T inventory in ITER and future D-T devices. So far, research in these areas is largely supported by post-mortem analysis of wall tiles. However, access to samples will be very much restricted in the next-generation devices (such as ITER, JT-60SA, W7-X, etc) with actively cooled plasma-facing components (PFC) and increasing duty cycle. This has motivated the development of methods to measure the deposition of material and retention of plasma fuel on the walls of fusion devices in situ, without removal of PFC samples. For this purpose, laser-based methods are the most promising candidates. Their feasibility has been assessed in a cooperative undertaking in various European associations under EFDA coordination. Different laser techniques have been explored both under laboratory and tokamak conditions with the emphasis to develop a conceptual design for a laser-based wall diagnostic which is integrated into an ITER port plug, aiming to characterize in situ relevant parts of the inner wall, the upper region of the inner divertor, part of the dome and the upper X-point region., QC 20131011

- Abstract
Volatile tungsten hexa-fluoride was locally injected into the TEXTOR tokamak as a marker for material migration studies. The injection was accompanied by puffing N-15 rare isotope as a nitrogen tracer in discharges with edge cooling by impurity seeding. The objective was to assess material balance by qualitative and quantitative determination of a global and local deposition pattern, material mixing effects and fluorine residence in plasma-facing components. Spectroscopy and ex situ ion beam analysis techniques were used. Tungsten was detected on all types of limiter tiles and short-term probes retrieved from the vessel. Over 80% of the injected W was identified. The largest tungsten concentration, 1 x 10(18) cm(-2), was in the vicinity of the gas inlet. Co-deposits contained tungsten and a mix of light isotopes: H, D, He-4, B-10, B-11, C-12, C-13, N-14, N-15, O-16 and small quantities of F-19 thus showing that both He and nitrogen are trapped following wall conditioning (He glow) and edge cooling., QC 20140307

ComputingMethodologies_IMAGEPROCESSINGANDCOMPUTERVISION - Abstract
A new System for routine digitization of video images has been implemented an TEXTOR-94. This video images System is used to analyse the impurity production, recycling and power deposition an limiters and to study the structure and location of visible emissions from the main plasma. The video System is based an a PC and is characterised by a high space and temporal resolution of video capture, storage and retrieval . On TEXTOR-94 cameras with CCIR norm take video pictures at 50 half frame per second with a resolution of 728x480 pixels. The videio Signals are captured from the cameras with a commercial framegrabber board and transferred with about 100Mbytes/sec directly into the main memory, which then processes every conceivable video Signal in real time . The captured images are stored automatically an the hard disc of the PC. A special data display and analysis program has been developed to analyse the 2D images from spectroscopic, thermographic and other observations allowing an easy and comfortable handling of stored images. In this paper, we give a short description of the video System concentrating mostly an guidelines for the use of the VIDEO program .

Hydrogen isotopes are released from the walls, divertor plates and limiters of fusion devices in different forms, as atoms or molecules. The density and velocity distributions of these particles upon release can heavily influence the boundary plasma, especially through their penetration depth, and, indirectly, the plasma and its confinement properties as a whole. Recent experiments on different tokamaks have brought to light the deep interdependence between atomic and molecular species in this respect. Investigating this complexity calls for sophisticated spectroscopic diagnostics and new data on molecules like D-2 and HID. Hydrogen and deuterium atoms with extremely low energies, definitely below 1 eV, are observed and give indications on the release processes, i.e. on those where molecules are involved. It turns out that corrections to the estimated hydrogen flux may be required-a procedure is proposed in the present work to obtain values for an effective S/XB coefficient for atomic hydrogen (not equal 15), which denotes the ratio of the collisional ionization (S) to the excitation (X) rate coefficients, divided by the branching ratio B. Moreover, attention is drawn to a possible heating mechanism of these very cold atoms by the proton/deuteron background (from 0.2 up to 10eV). The derived information on the detailed release mechanisms should contribute towards improving the various numerical codes in which neutrals play a role. Eventually, the strong influence of the surface temperature on the ratio of atoms to molecules has to be considered in the choice of materials for plasma-facing components.

An overview of several techniques considered for fuel and co-deposits removal is given. The methods were tested both on plasma-facing components from the TEXTOR tokamak and on laboratory-prepared layers: (a) chemical approach based on oxidative or nitrogen-assisted plasma; (b) photonic methods with laser-induced fuel desorption or ablation of co-deposits; (c) thermal desorption in vacuum or under oxidative conditions at a broad range of temperatures. The emphasis is on outstanding issues associated with every technique aiming at the reduction of fuel content: the efficiency of fuel and co-deposit removal, the surface state of PFC following the treatment and dust generation., QC 20121114

Ion temperatures have been measured in front of a limiter in TEXTOR-94 under various plasma conditions by means of the Doppler broadening of the C5+ line (lambda = 529 nm), which is excited by charge exchange processes with hydrogen (deuterium) atoms recycled at the limiter surface. The ion temperatures have been compared with electron temperatures measured by atomic beam techniques. It has been found that the ion temperatures are considerably larger than those of the electrons. In the scrape-off layer (SOL) the ratio between the ion and electron temperatures (T-i /T-e) can reach values of up to three at low plasma densities, but this ratio decreases with increasing density. The SOL e-folding length of the ion temperature is much larger than that of the electron temperature. The influence of the test limiter position r(L) on the ion temperature measurements has been investigated but found to be of no significant importance.

- Abstract
Laser-based methods are investigated for the development of an in situ diagnostic for spatially and temporally resolved characterization of the first wall in fusion devices. Here we report on the first systematic laser-induced ablation spectroscopy (LIAS) measurements carried out on various surface layers in the TEXTOR tokamak. These materials include a-C: D, mixed W/C/Al/D-2, Oerlikon Balzers 'Balinit' diamond-like carbon layers and EK98 fine-grain graphite. In LIAS, the bulk or deposited material is evaporated during the plasma discharge by intense laser radiation. The light emitted by particles entering the edge of the ionizing tokamak plasma is then observed by optical spectroscopy. In the measurements taken, it was found that the studied layers can be identified by their characteristic line emission. A good correlation between the observed line intensity and layer thickness is found. The observed plumes show target material dependence. To analyze layers formed during tokamak operation, further investigation of the ablation process and reference materials for cross calibration is required.
