157. On the estimation of the lightning incidence to offshore wind farms

Abstract

Field observations have shown that the frequency of dangerous lightning events to wind turbines, calculated according to the IEC standard 61400-24:2010, is grossly underestimated. This paper intends to critically revisit the evaluation of the incidence of downward lightning as well as self-initiated and other-triggered upward flashes to offshore wind power plants. Three different farms are used as case studies. The conditions for interception of stepped leaders in downward lightning and the initiation of upward lightning is evaluated with the Self-consistent Leader Inception and Propagation Model (SLIM). The analysis shows that only a small fraction of damages observed in the analysed farms can be attributed to downward lightning. It is also estimated that only a small fraction (less than 19%) of all active thunderstorms in the area of the analysed farms can generate sufficiently high thundercloud fields to self-initiate upward lightning. Furthermore, it is shown that upward flashes can be triggered even under low thundercloud fields once a sufficiently high electric field change is generated by a nearby lightning event. Abstract

The numbers of potential neurotoxicants in the environment are raising and pose a great risk for humans and the environment. Currently neurotoxicity assessment is mostly performed to predict and prevent harm to human populations. Despite all the efforts invested in the last years in developing novel in vitro or in silico test systems, in vivo tests with rodents are still the only accepted test for neurotoxicity risk assessment in Europe. Despite an increasing number of reports of species showing altered behaviour, neurotoxicity assessment for species in the environment is not required and therefore mostly not performed. Considering the increasing numbers of environmental contaminants with potential neurotoxic potential, eco-neurotoxicity should be also considered in risk assessment. In order to do so novel test systems are needed that can cope with species differences within ecosystems. In the field, online-biomonitoring systems using behavioural information could be used to detect neurotoxic effects and effect-directed analyses could be applied to identify the neurotoxicants causing the effect. Additionally, toxic pressure calculations in combination with mixture modelling could use environmental chemical monitoring data to predict adverse effects and prioritize pollutants for laboratory testing. Cheminformatics based on computational toxicological data from in vitro and in vivo studies could help to identify potential neurotoxicants. An array of in vitro assays covering different modes of action could be applied to screen compounds for neurotoxicity. The selection of in vitro assays could be guided by AOPs relevant for eco-neurotoxicity. In order to be able to perform risk assessment for eco-neurotoxicity, methods need to focus on the most sensitive species in an ecosystem. Abstract

Irregularities inside the fluid flow in laser fusion cutting of sheet metals cause quality defects like large striation depths or adhered dross. Trim‐cut analysis is used to measure the flow velocities of the molten material by high speed imaging. The so‐called streak analysis creates a repetitive pattern for multiple melt waves and the angle of these patterns is assignable to specific flow velocities. In this article, a discrete fourier transform is used to automatically determine the spatial distribution of flow velocities. The results show that identifying the velocity domains and assigning them to the parameters of the cutting process and quality characteristics is a promising approach to enhance the understanding and to achieve higher quality cuts.

Abstract

Due to the change in grain size during laser processing in the heat‐affected zone and the solidifying material, the potential of cracking, surface hardening, and decrease in weldability, corrosion resistance and fatigue life may result. It is shown that through combining state‐of‐the‐art temperature simulation of laser processes with thermo‐mechanical volume averaging grain formation simulation, the resulting grain density can be predicted within the order of magnitude found in the two experiments carried out for laser fusion cutting and spot welding of A356. However, fundamental knowledge about the grain density function during rapid solidification, the prediction of the transition from epitactic growth to globular grains and defined validation experiments are needed in order to provide a realistic virtual microstructure.

Abstract

In laser deep penetration welding, the knowledge on the temperature history of the material is of great interest for the assessment of the quality properties of the weld. For this purpose a hybrid process model that enables the fast calculation of temperature distributions as a function of process parameters is applied. The interaction between laser and material is taken into account by a reduced keyhole model, which exploits a hierarchy in the spatial dimensions occurring at high feed rates. The resulting shape of a stationary keyhole is introduced as a Dirichlet boundary into a thermal finite element simulation in which it is moved through the workpiece according to the process control of the laser beam. The boundary is mathematically described by a level set function and immersed in a fixed computational mesh. The Dirichlet boundary condition is imposed using an embedded boundary method. The calculated temperature distributions are evaluated by means of bead on plate welds conducted in 0.9 mm thick sheets of 1.4301 (AISI 304) stainless steel.

Abstract

Systematic excitation power and temperature-dependent measurements on the emission lines of single self-assembled InP/(Al0.20Ga0.80)0.51In0.49P quantum dots embedded in micropillars have been performed. The quantum dots were excited optically via a pulsed laser and their luminescence was collected using a micro-photoluminescence setup. The exciton and biexciton intensity, linewidth, and spectral position was investigated in a temperature range from 4 K up to 130 K. Single-photon emission from the quantum dots is presented up to a temperature of 100 K, confirmed by photon-statistics measurements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Single lateral InGaAs quantum dot molecules have been embedded in a planar microcavity in order to increase the luminescence extraction efficiency. Using a combination of metal-organic vapor phase and molecular beam epitaxy samples could be produced that exhibit a 30 times enhanced single-photon emission rate. We also show that the single-photon emission is fully switchable between two different molecular excitonic recombination energies by applying a lateral electric field. Furthermore, the presence of a polarization fine structure splitting of the molecular neutral excitonic states is reported which leads to two polarization split classically correlated biexciton-exciton cascades. The fine structure splitting is found to be on the order of 10 μeV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
