This paper presents an overview of the “ATHENA” project which aims to establish a Center of Excellence in the field of Remote Sensing for Cultural Heritage in the areas of Archaeology and Cultural Heritage through the development of an enhanced knowledge base and innovative methods. This center will be established by twinning the existing Remote Sensing and Geo-environment Research Laboratory at the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) with internationally-leading counterparts from other Member States of the EU, such as the Institute of Archaeological and Monumental Heritage (IBAM) and Institute of Methodologies for Environmental Analysis (IMAA) of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) and the German Aerospace Centre (DLR). The goals of the Center will be aligned with the Smart Specialization Strategy of Cyprus and to the new European Cohesion Policy. The close collaboration between CUT and other experts in the field of Remote Sensing for Cultural Heritage in the EU will form a synergic network that will permit the transfer of knowledge and training of the existing personnel of CUT. As a result, the ATHENA project will have both direct and indirect social, scientific, and economic outcomes. In addition, the implementation of the project will facilitate future collaborations with experts of the Archaeology and Cultural Heritage sector in an EU level and in the region, increase the Centers’ research capabilities, as well as enhance the research and academic profile of all participants. It is noteworthy to underline the importance of the geographical position of the Center in the region of eastern Mediterranean, a region inhabited thousands of years before and therefore abound in archaeological residues.

GMES / Copernicus is the European Earth Observation Programme, conducted jointly by the EC, ESA, EUMETSAT and the member states. The Sentinel satellites (Copernicus space segment) are expected to be launched in 2014 (Sentinel-1A, -2A, and -3A). The core payload data ground segment (PDGS) is managed by ESA and operated by national partners. In this core ground segment, the DLR German Remote Sensing Data Center (DFD) was selected to install and operate Processing and Archiving Centers (PACs) for Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-3-OLCI. This paper describes the current status of the project “Preparation and Operations of the Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-3 OLCI Off-line Processing and Archiving Centre at DLR Oberpfaffenhofen (S1-PAC / S3-OLCI-PAC)”.

Overview of German Remote Sensing Data Center Earth Observation Ground Segment activities. Overview on GMES and near real time applications

Programmatic presentation on abaility of earth observation to help in case of natural disasters

Several European countries have developed their national high resolution earth observation systems. Some of them are operated in close cooperation with industrial partners, others are dual-use missions earmarked to fulfil the needs of national security. In addition, the European Space Agency and the European Commission have initiated the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) project. Therein, a fleet of satellites (SENTINELs) will deliver data for European wide information services, augmented by data from national and non-European earth observation systems. This new scenario needs clear guidance and regulations. Besides the principles for operations of earth observation missions – as set out in UN principles on earth observation – the operators of very high resolution missions require clear governmental acts which international users can be served and which data might be restricted in distribution. For national science and the SENTINEL-missions, a policy for free and open access is being developed to guarantee a maximum use of the data. Exemplified on the German national missions and the European GMES scenario, data policies and regulations for existing and new earth observation missions will be explained.

Aim of GENESI-DR is to achieve following objectives: - To provide a base for (establishing) a world-wide e-infrastructure for Earth Science with European leadership - To provide guaranteed, reliable, easy, effective, and operational access to a variety of data sources, and demonstrate how the same approach can be extended to provide access to all Earth Science data - To harmonise operations at key Earth Science data repositories limiting fragmentation of solutions - To demonstrate effective curation and prepare the frame for approaching long term preservation of Earth Science data - To validate the effective capabilities required to access distributed repositories for new communities, including education, and assess benefits and impacts - To integrate new scientific and technological derived paradigms in operational infrastructures in responds to the latest Earth Science requirements Realisation of GENESI-DR is not only a technical challenge. Only in conjunction with the solving of political issues the project will have success in the future. Network Activity 4 (NA4) is responsible for covering these political issues. It will deal with data policy aspects and contacts with national and international organisations and provide the usage policy input for Service Activities (SA1, SA2). In the frame of sub-task TNA4.1 - Relation with European and National Policy Bodies- NA4 has to identify European Bodies concerned in the management of Earth science data. In a first step it will compile a survey of National, European and International Interest Groups involved in Data and Resources Access Policy. From these existing data policies it will derive and update as needed the overall GENESI-DR access policies for Earth science data. This survey is the content of this document.

Der Beitrag gibt einen Überblick über die Möglichkeiten der Fernerkundung, Aufgaben, kommende Missionen und einige industrielle Partner des Deutschen Fernerkundungsdatenzentrums im DLR (Stand: 01/2006).

Objective - To assess the changes in ventricular evoked responses (VER) produced by the decrease in left ventricular outflow tract gradient (LVOTG) in patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) treated with dual-chamber (DDD) pacing. Methods - A pulse generator Physios CTM (Biotronik, Germany) was implanted in 9 patients with severe drug-refractory HOCM. After implantation, the following conditions were assessed: 1) Baseline evaluation: different AV delay (ranging from 150ms to 50 ms) were sequentially programmed during 5 to 10 minutes, and the LVOTG (as determined by Doppler echocardiography) and VER recorded; 2) standard evaluation, when the best AV delay (resulting in the lowest LVOTG) programmed at the initial evaluation was maintained so that its effect on VER and LVOTG could be assessed during each chronic pacing evaluation. Results - LVOTG decreased after DDD pacing, with a mean value of 59 ± 24 mmHg after dual chamber pacemaker, which was significantly less than the gradient before pacing (98 + 22mmHg). An AV delay >100ms produced a significantly lower decrease in VER depolarization duration (VERDD) when compared to an AV delay £100ms.
