Precision stamping is one of the fastest growing processes in the current metalworking industry. One of the key success factors in this field is to fulfill the precision requirement. However, there was rare information available on the influence of the heat treatment processes on the dimensional growth for both currently used and newly developed grades. This dissertation presents the extensive experimental works to evaluate the influence of austenitizing temperature, tempering condition, subzero treatment and post-tempering aging on the hardness, amount of the retained austenite, dimensional change during heat treatment, dimensional growth after heat treatment as well as un-notched impact toughness of ASSAB 88, ASSAB XW-42 and DAIDO DC 53 cold work tool steels. An invasive approach to accelerate tendon healing in vivo with direct current electrical stimulation is presented in this study. Achilles tendons of rabbits have been transected and repaired on both legs. An electrical circuit was designed to provide a 7-mAmp current on the repair site of one leg while the other acts as control. After 21 days of treatment, the rabbits were sacrificed and the Achilles tendons were extracted for mechanical testing. The Ultimate Load, Ultimate Elongation, Strain at Ultimate Tensile Stress (UTS) and Cross-sectional area were found to be significantly higher in the stimulated group as compared to control. The results strongly suggest that using electrical stimulation for tendon repair results in quicker return to normal function. Master of Science (Biomedical Engineering)

This project focused on creating the design and modeling of suitable scaffolds for tissue engineering using Rapid Prototyping (RP) technologies. It encompasses the development of an algorithm in conjunction with computer-aided design (CAD) technologies to construct, layer and assemble three-dimensional scaffolds with controllable macro- and micro-architecture on a computer. This algorithm is employed to slice large scaffolds into layers and create orientation features on layered scaffold for reassembling. It ensures large scaffolds will have uniform cell distribution and are conducive for cell migration and nutrient infiltration which both are important requirements in TE applications. RP fabrication techniques are then employed to build scaffolds according to the CAD models. The application of CAD and RP promises high scaffold qualities with spatially and anatomically accurate three-dimensional forms and desirable macro- and micro-architectures that provide new cost-effective, flexible, and rapid solutions for TE scaffold production. Hydroxyapatite (HA) is an appropriate ceramic for artificial teeth or bones due to its excellent biocompatibility and bioactivity. Unfortunately, the mechanical properties of pure HA ceramics are poor and these make them unsuitable as high load-bearing implants. A solution to this problem is the use of HA-coated metal implants. In this project, HA powder and HA coatings on Ti-6A1-4V substrates were produced and characterized. Plasma spray and in particular the Controlled Atmosphere Plasma Spray (CAPS) system was employed to deposit HA on Ti-6A1-4V. The main focus was to study the contribution of this new technique as compared to conventional plasma spraying (Atmospheric Plasma Spraying, APS), in the production of HA coatings. By 1st July 2006, legislations in the European Union (EU) will ban the use of lead (Pb) in all electronic products and this will effectively prohibit the use of tin-lead (Sn-Pb) solders and bring about a new paradigm shift in the technology and application of Lead-Free (Pb-free) electronic solders. Global consolidation in implementing Pb-free electronics manufacturing and reliable Pb-free electronic products has shifted the competitive edge of the industry to Pb-free readiness and competence. Solder technology is the key enabling technology for electrical interconnection in surface mounted integrated circuit (IC) components and printed circuit board (PCB) assemblies. An axial flow pump prototype has been designed in Nanyang Technological University (NTU). In-vitro pump characteristics tests performed in this project showed that it is able to provide a pressure of 120 mmHg and a flow rate of 5 litres/min at an operating speed of 10,000 rpm. Experimental results have also indicated that the work done on the fluid is well distributed along the axial length of the pump rotor. This helps to prevent sudden high shear stresses from being exerted on the fluid particles, thus avoiding blood damage. The CUSUM chart is very effective in the detection of small or moderate process shift as compared to the Shewhart control chart commonly use in the industry. However the run-rules concept use extensively in the Shewhart control chart has not been applied into the CUSUM chart. 111 p. This dissertation report presents the mathematical modelling of a MEMS capacitive technology microphone that is designed and fabricated based on the advanced wafer bonding technology. A silicon diaphragm and a rigid silicon backplate perforated with acoustic holes constitute the two electrodes of the microphone. The design considerations and specifications of a condenser microphone are briefly presented and discussed. A reliable bulk micro-machining fabrication process for silicon microphones with sensitivity trimming has been proposed and developed. The bonding between the diaphragm and the backplate wafers is accomplished by the application of an Au-Si eutectic bonding technique. The advent of micro-machining technology has inevitably empowered the manufacture of highly sensitive and miniaturized small-signal sensors. However, its inherent small size contributes to a particular class of mechanical noise, which is known as mechanical-thermal noise, as a result of molecular thermal agitation. This mechanical-thermal noise, together with other sources of background noise, establishes the lowest limit of acoustic pressure that can be picked up by the microphone. Verification of a written MATLAB program is performed against three B & K. microphones and the simulated microphone parameters are in good agreement with those values that are cited in established literatures.
