Abstract The applicant Syngenta Crop Protection AG submitted a request to the competent national authority in Belgium to evaluate the confirmatory data that were identified for metalaxyl‐M in the framework of the MRL review under Article 43 and Article 12 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 as not available. To address the data gaps new data regarding analytical methods for enforcement (validation data for hops and cocoa beans, ILV for fat) and several residue trials data supporting adjusted GAPs for metalaxyl‐M on apples, pears, broccoli, cauliflower, herbs and edible flowers, soya beans and cocoa beans were submitted. Two data gaps concerning analytical methods for enforcement (validation data for hops and cocoa beans, ILV for fat) were considered satisfactorily addressed. However, the data gap on validation of the efficiency of the extraction, hydrolysis and derivatisation steps included in the proposed analytical method for enforcement of residues in livestock was not addressed. The data gap for residue trials supporting authorisations of metalaxyl‐M was partially addressed. The data gap for residue trials supporting authorisations of metalaxyl was not addressed. The new information provided may require a revision of the existing MRLs for several commodities of plant and animal origin. Further risk management considerations are required.

Abstract In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the applicant Nissan Chemical Europe S.A.S. submitted a request to the competent national authority in Finland to modify the existing maximum residue level (MRL) for quizalofop in caraway to accommodate the intended NEU use of quizalop‐P‐ethyl for this commodity. The data submitted in support of the request were found to be sufficient to derive an MRL proposal for caraway. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of quizalofop, resulting from the use of quizalofop‐P‐ethyl, on the commodity under consideration at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the use of quizalofop‐P‐ethyl according to the reported agricultural practice is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

Abstract In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the applicant Arysta LifeScience (ALS) Benelux SPRL submitted a request to the competent national authority in Spain to modify the existing maximum residue level (MRL) for the active substance dodine in citrus fruits. The data submitted in support of the request were found to be sufficient to derive MRL proposals for the group of citrus fruits. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of dodine in the commodities under consideration at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg. In animal matrices, no enforcement method is available for fat, muscle and milk whereby in liver and kidney dodine can be enforced at the LOQ of 0.01 mg/kg however an interlaboratory validation (ILV) is still required. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the uses of dodine according to the reported agricultural practices is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the long‐term intake of residues resulting from the use of fludioxonil according to the reported agricultural practices is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

Abstract In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the applicant Luxembourg Industries (Pamol) Ltd submitted a request to the competent national authority in Spain to modify the existing maximum residue levels (MRLs) for fosetyl/phosphonic acid (fosetyl‐Al (sum of fosetyl, phosphonic acid and their salts, expressed as fosetyl)) in citrus fruits. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of potassium phosphonates according to the existing and proposed residue definitions for enforcement in the commodities under consideration. Since EFSA raised concerns regarding the independence of some of the residue trials submitted in support of the MRL application, EFSA presented three options of MRL proposals for further risk management consideration. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the use of potassium phosphonates on citrus crops according to the reported agricultural practices is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

Abstract According to Article 12 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, EFSA has reviewed the maximum residue levels (MRLs) currently established at European level for the pesticide active substance spirodiclofen. Although this active substance is no longer authorised within the European Union, MRLs were established by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (codex maximum residue limits; CXLs) and import tolerances were reported by Member States (including the supporting residues data). Based on the assessment of the available data, EFSA assessed the CXLs and import tolerances requested, and a consumer risk assessment was carried out. Although no apparent risk to consumers was identified, as spirodiclofen is classified as carcinogenic 1B with threshold, all MRL proposals derived by EFSA still require further consideration by risk managers.

Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the dietary intake of residues in food of plant and animal origin (including honey) resulting from the use of ametoctradin according to the existing agricultural practices is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

Abstract In compliance with Article 43 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) received from the European Commission a mandate to provide its reasoned opinion on the existing maximum residue levels (MRLs) for abamectin which might lead to consumers intake concerns on the basis of the lower toxicological reference values established during the peer review, the data currently available to EFSA and the outcome of the Member States’ consultation. To identify the MRLs of potential concern that require a more detailed assessment, EFSA screened the existing MRLs for abamectin considering the new toxicological reference values and an acute risk could not be excluded for 12 commodities. Fall‐back MRLs for nine commodities were proposed based on the data received under the present assessment. For apples, pears and escaroles, fall‐back MRLs could not be derived, and thus, a lowering of the MRLs for these crops to the limit of quantification (LOQ) is proposed.

For melons, data gaps were identified which precluded the derivation of MRL proposals. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of flutianil in the commodities under consideration at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the use of flutianil according to the reported agricultural practices is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health. It is to be noted that the consumer risk assessment could not be finalised with regard to the potential presence of soil metabolite OC 56635 in rotational crops. The reliable end points appropriate for use in regulatory risk assessment are presented.

Although these active substances are no longer authorised for use on edible crops within the European Union, MRLs were established by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (codex maximum residue limits (CXLs)) and import tolerances were reported by Member States (including the supporting residues data). Based on the assessment of the available data, EFSA assessed the CXLs and import tolerances requested, and a consumer risk assessment was carried out. All CXLs were found to be sufficiently supported by data, whereas some import tolerances were not supported by adequate data. Hence, the consumer risk assessment is considered indicative only and further consideration by risk managers is needed. Apart from a possible acute risk to consumers for a CXL higher than the existing MRL, no risk to consumers was identified

Abstract In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the Federal Public Service (FPS) Health, Food chain Safety and Environment submitted a request on behalf of Belgium (evaluating Member State, EMS) to modify the existing maximum residue levels (MRLs) for the active substance proquinazid in blueberries and cranberries. The data submitted in support of the request were found to be sufficient to derive MRL proposals for blueberries and cranberries. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of proquinazid in the commodities under consideration at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the use of proquinazid according to the reported agricultural practices is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

Bacterial pathogens employ a general strategy to overcome host defenses by coordinating the virulence gene expression using dedicated regulatory systems that could raise intricate networks. During the last twenty years, many studies of Helicobacter pylori, a human pathogen responsible for various stomach diseases, have mainly focused on elucidating the mechanisms and functions of virulence factors. In parallel, numerous studies have focused on the molecular mechanisms that regulate gene transcription to attempt to understand the physiological changes of the bacterium during infection and adaptation to the environmental conditions it encounters. The number of regulatory proteins deduced from the genome sequence analyses responsible for the correct orchestration of gene transcription appears limited to 14 regulators and three sigma factors. Furthermore, evidence is accumulating for new and complex circuits regulating gene transcription and H. pylori virulence. Here, we focus on the molecular mechanisms used by H. pylori to control gene transcription as a function of the principal environmental changes.

- Abstract
The crystal-chemical variations of spinels grown as a function of cooling rate (ΔT/Δt) were analyzed via X-ray electron-microprobe (EPMA) maps. Maps were collected serially by using a fixed distance. Spinels solidified from a tholeiitic MOR basaltic liquid (B100) cooled at cooling rates (ΔT/Δt) of 1, 7, 60, and 180 °C/h, between 1300 and 800 °C and at ambient Pand fO2. As ΔT/Δtincreases, the amount of spinel is invariably <5 area% and its size decreases. Compared to the previous data set collected by common single and selected EPMA analytical points (112 analyses), the kinetic effects induced by ΔT/Δtare here quantitatively captured by a large number of analyses (2052).

Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of azoxystrobin on the commodities under consideration at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg. Based on the risk assessment results, noting that an acute risk assessment was not deemed necessary for azoxystrobin, EFSA concluded that the long‐term intake of residues resulting from the uses of azoxystrobin according to the reported agricultural practices is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the uses of emamectin benzoate according to the intended agricultural practices are unlikely to present a risk to consumer health. The consumer risk assessment shall be regarded as indicative since affected by uncertainty related to the data gaps identified in the MRL review.

Abstract EFSA received from the European Commission a mandate to provide its reasoned opinion on the joint review of maximum residue levels (MRLs) for fosetyl and phosphonates in or on food and feed according to Article 43 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005. According to Article 12 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, EFSA has reviewed the maximum residue levels (MRLs) currently established at European level for the pesticide active substances potassium and disodium phosphonates. As fosetyl, potassium phosphonates and disodium phosphonates degrade to phosphonic acid, it was considered appropriate to jointly review the residues of these three active substances. To assess the occurrence of fosetyl, potassium phosphonates and disodium phosphonate residues in plants, processed commodities, rotational crops and livestock, EFSA considered the conclusions derived in the framework of Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009, the MRLs established by the Codex Alimentarius Commission as well as the European authorisations reported by Member States (including the supporting residues data) and the monitoring data from official control. Based on the assessment of the available data, MRL proposals were derived and a consumer risk assessment was carried out. Although no apparent risk to consumers was identified, some information required by the regulatory framework was missing. Abstract In compliance with Article 43 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, EFSA received from the European Commission a mandate to provide its reasoned opinion on the toxicological properties and maximum residue levels (MRLs) for the benzimidazole substances carbendazim and thiophanate‐methyl. Specifically, EFSA was asked to assess whether thiophanate‐methyl or carbendazim have clastogenic potential and, in case clastogenic potential can be excluded, to derive toxicological reference values necessary for consumer risk assessment and assessment of maximum residue levels (MRLs). Although these active substances are no longer authorised within the European Union, MRLs were established by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (codex maximum residue limits; CXLs), and import tolerances are in place. Based on the assessment of the available data, toxicological reference values and MRL proposals were derived and a consumer risk assessment was carried out. Some information required by the regulatory framework was found to be missing and a possible acute risk to consumers was identified. Hence, the consumer risk assessment is considered indicative only, all MRL proposals derived by EFSA still require further consideration by risk managers and measures for reduction of the consumer exposure should also be considered.

Abstract In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the applicants Lainco S.A., Exclusivas Sarabia S.A., Biovert S.L., Sipcam Inagra S.A. and Tilco‐Alginure GmbH submitted respectively two requests to the competent national authorities in Greece and Germany, to modify the existing maximum residue levels (MRLs) for the active substance potassium phosphonates in certain citrus fruits and in herbal infusions from leaves and herbs. The data submitted in support of both requests were found to be sufficient to derive MRL proposals for lemons, limes, mandarins, strawberries leaves and the remaining plants included in the group of herbal infusions from leaves and herbs. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control potassium phosphonates residues in the commodities under consideration. Based on the risk assessment results using the currently set acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 2.25 mg/kg body weight (bw) per day for phosphonic acid, EFSA concluded that the long‐term intake of residues resulting from the uses of potassium phosphonates according to the reported good agricultural practices is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health. The consumer risk assessment shall be regarded as indicative; a more realistic intake assessment will be performed in the framework of the joint review of MRLs for fosetyl and potassium phosphonates.

The data submitted in support of the request were found to be sufficient to derive an MRL proposal for tomatoes. For watermelons, a change of the MRL recently set in the EU legislation is not required. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of tau‐fluvalinate in the commodities under consideration. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the intended uses of tau‐fluvalinate according to the reported agricultural practices is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of isofetamid in the commodities under consideration at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the use of isofetamid according to the reported agricultural practices is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

A Messinian and lithified horizon enriched in volcanic particles with thicknesses of 170–180 cm crops in the Camporotondo (CR) section (Marche, Italy). This volcanic-rich layer (VRL) was investigated by field plus mesoscopic observations, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), bulk composition methods and electron-microprobe analysis (EMPA). The quantitative textural features of volcanic and sedimentary components were determined by 2D image analysis. The lowermost massive 70–80 cm portion is free of sedimentary structure or characterised only by plane-parallel ones, whereas the uppermost one is undulated and cross-laminated. The XRPD and SEM outcomes unveil that the VRL of CR is mainly composed of glassy shards (≥80 area%), a variable amount of sedimentary minerals (2O present in the glass fraction suggest a provenance from a convergent geodynamic setting. The 2D image analysis on SEM observations show that the VRL-5.5 of CR is composed of very fine and sorted (averages of MZ of 5,72 and σi of 0,70), scarcely vesicular, glass shards, with similar long and short size dimensions, shape and roundness. The VRL-5.5 of CR is free of large minerals and fossils. The coupling of mesoscopic and microscopic determinations indicates that the lowermost interval was deposited such as a primary tephra, i.e., fallout pyroclasts sinking in seawater. Instead, the uppermost interval derives from local, low-energy and sin-depositional remobilisation of the same VRL-5.5. The textural attributes of the volcanic fractions, the sedimentological features and the thickness of the VRL at CR correspond to the westward deposit of a still unknown eruption likely occurred at 5.5 Ma.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar os efeitos do treinamento de força na alteração dos níveis plasmáticos de colesterol total de mulherespós-menopáusicas fisicamente ativas. Participaram do estudo 5 mulheres pós-menopáusicas com idade de 53,2 ± 1,48 anos, que realizaram sessões de treinamento de força por um período de 10 semanas, com frequência de 3 vezes por semana em dias alternados, intensidade de 80% de 1RM e volume de 3 séries de 10 repetições por exercício, em método de séries múltiplas. Na condição pré treinamento a média dos valores de colesterol total das voluntárias foi de 242,4 ±39,4 mg/dL, após o período de treinamento os valores de colesterol total foram de 204 ±18,34 mg/dL (p = 0,032). Além disso no período de pré treinamento a média da somatória das forças foi de 546,0 ± 26,9 kg e após o período de 10 semanas de treinamento essa média da somatória foi de 607,6 ± 26,1 kg (p = 0,006). O presente estudo permitiu concluir que um período de 10 semanas de treinamento de força a 80% de 1RM foi capaz de aumentar os níveis de força e reduzir os níveis plasmáticos de colesterol total em mulheres pós-menopáusicas. ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of strength training on changes in plasma levels of total cholesterol of post-menopause physically active women. The study included five post-menopausal women aged 53.2 ± 1.48 years, who performed strength training for 10 weeks, 3 times a week on alternate days, with an intensity of 80% of 1RM and 3 sets of 10 repetitions per set in a multiple sets method. Abstract In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, FPS Public Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment on behalf of Belgium (evaluating Member State, EMS) submitted an application to modify the existing maximum residue levels (MRLs) for the active substance flupyradifurone and its metabolite difluoroacetic acid (DFA) in okra/lady's finger. The data submitted in support of the request were found sufficient to derive MRL proposals for the crop under consideration. The potential contribution of DFA residues in okra/lady's finger from the soil uptake was also estimated. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the relevant residues in the crop under consideration. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the long‐term intake of residues of flupyradifurone and of its soil metabolite DFA resulting from the use of flupyradifurone is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health. Due to the lack of proper consumption data of okra/lady's finger, the acute exposure assessment could not be reliably undertaken but due to this crop being a minor commodity it is unlikely that acute consumer intake concerns will be associated with this crop.

Abstract In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the applicant UPL Europe Ltd. submitted an application to the competent national authority in Germany (evaluating Member State, EMS) to raise the existing maximum residue level (MRL) to 0.15 mg/kg for the active substance phenmedipham in celeriac. The submitted residue trials are sufficient to derive a tentative MRL of 0.15 mg/kg, pending further investigation of nature of phenmedipham residues in root crops. For this assessment EFSA considered that the available sugar beet metabolism data can be extrapolated to celeriac on a tentative basis. The acceptability of such proposal shall be further considered by risk managers. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of phenmedipham in celeriac at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg. Since the current MRL application was submitted before the finalisation of the EU pesticides peer review of the renewal of the approval of phenmedipham, the consumer exposure assessment was performed according to the conclusions on the toxicity of phenmedipham from the first approval under Directive 91/414/EEC. Accordingly, the long‐term intake of residues of phenmedipham resulting from the existing and the intended uses does not indicate a risk to consumer health. The present assessment does not consider the data gaps identified in the context of the renewal of the approval of phenmedipham under Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009 which prevented experts to derive toxicological reference values (TRVs) for phenmedipham, to derive the risk assessment residue definition for root crops other than sugar beet and to conclude on the toxicity of relevant metabolites.

Abstract In accordance with Article 6 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, the applicant Bayer S.A.S. ‐ Crop Science division submitted a request to the competent national authority in Austria to modify the existing maximum residue levels (MRLs) for the active substance spirotetramat in leeks, spring onions and in honey. The data submitted in support of the request were found to be sufficient to derive MRL proposals for all these crops and honey. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of spirotetramat and its metabolites in plant matrices on the commodities under consideration and in honey at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg for each analyte. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the use of spirotetramat according to the reported agricultural practices is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

The data submitted in support of the intended northern Europe (NEU) outdoor and EU indoor use were found sufficient to derive MRL proposals of 4 mg/kg for cranberries, gooseberries, currants and blueberries. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of fludioxonil in the plant matrix under consideration at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg. Based on the risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the long‐term intake of residues resulting from the use of fludioxonil according to the reported agricultural practice is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health.

The data submitted in support of the request were found to be sufficient to derive an maximum residue level (MRL) proposal for hops; however, further risk management considerations are required to decide on the appropriate MRL values considering that the MRL in the country of origin is lower than the MRL proposal derived from the residue trials. Adequate analytical methods for enforcement are available to control the residues of cyflufenamid in the crop under consideration at the validated limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.01 mg/kg. Based on the consumer risk assessment results, EFSA concluded that the short‐term and long‐term intake of residues resulting from the use of cyflufenamid according to the reported agricultural practice in the country of origin is unlikely to present a risk to consumer health. This conclusion shall be regarded as indicative considering that some MRL proposals derived by EFSA during the MRL review require further confirmatory data.

Neisseria meningitidis is a strictly human pathogen and is the major cause of septicemia and meningitis worldwide. Factor H binding protein (fHbp) is a meningococcal surface-exposed lipoprotein that binds the human Complement factor H allowing the bacterium to evade the host innate immune response. FHbp is also a key antigen in two vaccines against N. meningitidis serogroup B. Although the fHbp gene is present in most circulating meningococcal strains, level of fHbp expression varies among isolates and has been correlated to differences in promoter sequences upstream of the gene. Here we elucidated the sequence determinants that control fHbp expression in globally circulating strains. We analyzed the upstream fHbp intergenic region (fIR) of more than 5800 strains representative of the UK circulating isolates and we identified eleven fIR sequence alleles which represent 88% of meningococcal strains. By engineering isogenic recombinant strains where fHbp expression was under the control of each of the eleven fIR alleles, we confirmed that the fIR sequence determines a specific and distinct level of expression. Moreover, we identified the molecular basis for variation in expression through polymorphisms within key regulatory regions that are known to affect fHbp expression. We experimentally established three expression groups, high-medium-low, that correlated directly with the susceptibility to killing mediated by anti-fHbp antibodies and the ability of the meningococcal strain to survive within human serum. By using this sequence classification and information about the variant, we predicted fHbp expression in the panel of UK strains and we observed that strains with higher expressing fIR alleles are more likely associated with invasive disease. Overall, our findings can contribute to understand and predict vaccine coverage mediated by fHbp as well as to shed light on the role of this virulence factor in determining an invasive phenotype.
