Millions of tons of plastic products are produced globally each year; however, the low degradation rate of plastics results in an accumulation of these products in almost every ecosystem on the planet, causing enormous environmental harm. In this study, we isolated three fungal strains found growing on a piece of foam and sought to determine if these fungi have the capacity to degrade plastic. According to multigene (ITS, LSU, TEF1-α and TUB2) phylogenetic analyses and morphological studies, the three fungal strains were identified as two distinct species: Lasiodiplodia iraniensis and Mortierella alpina. The strains were inoculated on potato dextrose agar (PDA), malt extract agar (MEA), and malt agar medium containing chloramphenicol (CMEA) and covered with polyurethane (PU) films and incubated for four months. It was found that Mortierella alpina (ZHKUCC 22–0283) contributed to the PU mass loss of 26.30% on CMEA at 32°C, while Lasiodiplodia iraniensis (ZHKUCC 22–0282) accounted for the PU mass loss of 13.55% on MEA at 32°C. The surface hyphae were washed off by the PU films, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging was used to check the fungal degradation of the PU films. V‐belts are commonly used to transmit power between two distant pulleys. Therefore, a strong reinforcement for dimensional stability and thermomechanical properties are essential in power transmission belts. The influence of resorcinol formaldehyde resin (RFL) treated nylon short fibers in EPDM peroxide‐cured formulations was investigated, with concentrations ranging from 0 to 30 parts per hundred rubber (phr) in increments of five. The incorporation of nylon short fibers resulted in improved tensile and mechanical properties in EPDM vulcanizates. Specifically, the tensile stress at 100% elongation increased by 177% to (10.8 MPa), and the improvement in tear strength to 16.2% (75.7 N/mm) was observed. Among other functional requirements in a weak rubber like EPDM, enhanced tear strength is significant for its application in power transmission. Substantial reinforcement between the fiber‐elastomer matrix was confirmed via scanning electron microscopy, as evidenced by increased storage modulus (E′). Notably, there were no considerable effects on the curing rate or low‐temperature properties. Significant improvement in heat stability is observed through thermogravimetric analysis. These enhancements in mechanical and thermal properties might play a role in increased durability and performance in actual V‐ribbed belt applications. Zirconium dioxide silver‐doped nanoparticles (ZrO2AgDNPs) impacts the adhesive material in terms of its physical characteristics, antimicrobial properties, degree of conversion (DC), and micro‐tensile bond strength (μTBS) of orthodontic brackets to the enamel surface. A comprehensive methodological analysis utilizing a range of analytical techniques, including scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy‐dispersive x‐ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier‐transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, DC analysis, and μTBS testing. A light‐curable orthodontic adhesive, specifically Transbond XT, was combined with ZrO2AgDNPs at 2.5% and 5%. As a control, an adhesive with no incorporation of ZrO2AgDNPs was also prepared. The tooth samples were divided into three groups based on the weightage of NPs: group 1: 0% ZrO2AgDNPs (control), group 2: 2.5 wt% ZrO2AgDNPs, and group 3: 5 wt% ZrO2AgDNPs. EDX graph demonstrated silver (Ag), Zirconium (Zr), and Oxygen (O2), The antibacterial efficacy of adhesives with different concentrations of NPs (0%, 2.5%, and 5%) was assessed using the pour plate method. The FTIR spectra were analyzed to identify peaks at 1607 cm−1 corresponding to aromatic CC bonds and the peaks at 1638 cm−1 indicating the presence of aliphatic CC bonds. The μTBS was assessed using universal testing machine (UTM) and bond failure of orthodontic brackets was seen using adhesive remanent index (ARI) analysis. Kruskal–Wallis test assessed the disparities in survival rates of Streptococcus mutans. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post hoc Tukey multiple comparisons test calculated μTBS values. The lowest μTBS was observed in group 1 adhesive loaded with 0% ZrO2AgDNPs (21.25 ± 1.22 MPa). Whereas, the highest μTBS was found in group 3 (26.19 ± 1.07 MPa) adhesive loaded with 5% ZrO2AgDNPs. ZrO2AgDNPs in orthodontic adhesive improved μTBS and has acceptable antibacterial activity against S mutans. ZrO2AgDNPs at 5% by weight can be used in orthodontic adhesive alternative to the conventional method of orthodontic adhesive for bracket bonding. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the cleaning efficacy of different rotary systems during root canal treatment. Methods: Forty-five extracted mandibular molars were randomly divided into three groups according to the rotary system applied: Group 1, EDMax; Group 2, EdgeFile X1; and Group 3, Neoniti. The samples were irrigated with 5.25% NaOCl and normal saline as the final rinse. Roots were sectioned longitudinally and examined under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The debris and smear that remained in the root canals were assessed using a five-score index and compared between groups and root sections. The statistical analysis was performed by Kruskal-Wallis, Friedman, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks, and Mann-Whitney U tests at P < 0.05. Results: There was a statistically significant difference in debris scores between groups at the apical third (P=0.003), but no significant difference was found in other root sections (P>0.05). The sequential rotary EDMax group had more apical debris compared to the single-file reciprocating EdgeFile X1 and single-file rotary Neoniti groups (P< 0.05). No significant difference was observed between the study groups in smear layer scores (P>0.05). However, the smear layer score was significantly greater in the apical than in other root sections in all groups (P<0.05). Conclusions: The single-file systems, Neoniti and EdgeFile X1, demonstrated superior cleaning efficacy compared to the sequential EDMax system in the apical third, whereas the efficacy of all systems was equivalent in other root areas. Background: To assess the shear bond strength (SBS) of four calcium silicate‐based cements (CSCs) to composite resin using a universal adhesive in self‐etch (SE) and etch‐and‐rinse (ER) modes and to evaluate surface microstructure and chemical composition of CSCs after acid‐etching. Methods: In total, 30 specimens of each cement, Biodentine (BD), mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) Angelus (MTA‐A), ProRoot MTA (MTA‐P) and MTA Repair HP (MTA‐HP), were prepared and assigned into 2 groups (n = 15) according to universal adhesive (Clearfil Universal Bond Quick) applied in SE and ER mode. After composite resin (Clearfil Majesty Esthetic) was applied, the SBS was measured. Scanning electron microscope‐energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM–EDS) analysis was used to evaluate the changes in surface structure and elemental composition. Results: MTA‐P demonstrated significantly higher SBS than all CSCs, except for MTA‐HP in the SE mode. The ER mode exhibited significantly higher SBS compared to the SE mode for MTA‐P and MTA‐A. Acid‐etching caused morphological differences and affected elemental distribution. Conclusions: MTA‐P may be a more suitable pulp capping material due to its superior SBS compared to BD and MTA‐A. With the development of computer vision technology, structure from motion and multiview-stereo (SfM-MVS) approach has been widely applied in the geotechnical field. However, as a method that utilizes a series of images to reconstruct a 3D model, errors often occur due to insufficient feature points in the images. In this study, soil blocks, rubber specimens, and a sand particle ranging in size from 10 cm to 0.3 mm were utilized for synthetizing 3D model by the SfM-MVS approach. Additionally, an artificial background containing various colored blocks was introduced during photographing process to improve this approach. Moreover, the application of this approach was extended to process optical microscope images and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images by using two artificial backgrounds. Experimental comparison suggested that using artificial backgrounds could optimize the depression areas between the specimen and sample holder of the three-dimensional (3D) model generated by the SfM-MVS approach, especially in the depression portions with acute angles. And the reconstructed model from the SfM-MVS approach was comparable to that generated by X-ray computed tomography (CT). It was also found that increasing the image resolution and decreasing voxel size can improve the accuracy of the 3D model. And these improvements have been quantitatively demonstrated by tests. When using optical microscopy and SEM, the application of artificial backgrounds significantly increased the success rate of constructing 3D models, compared to the near impossibility of achieving successful reconstruction without them in the practice. It was mainly attribute to sufficient feature points in artificial backgrounds can be captured from artificial backgrounds in the camera tracking and point-matching processes of the SfM-MVS approach. With the proposed method in this study, the applicability of the SfM-MVS approach was extended in laboratory geotechnical experiments.

The current experimental work uses die casting, a liquid processing method, to create functionally graded material (FGM). To reduce the production of undesired intermetallic compounds, the FGM samples were created both with and without interfacing foil during the procedure. Mechanical properties including impact strength and microhardness were examined throughout the manufactured sample's cross-section. In addition, the interfacial bonding of FGM samples with and without an interacting foil was determined by estimating the shear strength. Analysis of the samples using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals the existence of compounds in the sample as well as the diffusion of Al and Zn particles from one side to the other. Compared to the FGM without foil, it is observed that the diffusion rate at the interface is regulated when the foil is present. In addition, it was found that, in contrast to pb foil, the inclusion of Ag foil limited the rate at which particles could move from one side to the other. Additionally, machining investigations are carried out at varying depths on both sides of the sample in the direction of the interface with the assistance of electric discharge machining.

The regenerated rock mass is a bearing structure formed by natural compaction in a hollow area, and the investigation of its optimal consolidation material and consolidation parameters is the key to improving the supporting effect and bearing stability of roadways. The effects of consolidation materials and parameters on the stability of the regenerative rock mass were studied using laboratory tests, numerical simulations, and theoretical analyses. Acoustic emission was used to monitor the variation characteristics of energy and ringing count during the process of rock mass failure, and the bonding interface area of the extremely weak cementation regeneration structure was tested by electron microscope scanning. The results show that there is a quadratic function relationship between the water–cement ratio of different cementing materials and the bond strength of the recycled rock mass; the regenerative rock mass with superfine cement exhibited the highest compressive strength and the largest cumulative energy of acoustic emission. This shows that it has the strongest bearing capacity, the highest elastic performance, the most stable micro-fracture development, and the best cementation effect, followed by ordinary cement, gypsum, and laterite. The scanning test showed that the regenerated structure had more internal pores, a loose structure, and poor cementation. Three-dimensional scanning modeling of four representative broken rock blocks was carried out, and the simulation verified that the regenerated structure had macroscopic “X”-shaped shear failure characteristics. The numerical simulation also verified three forms of rupture in the regenerative structure detected by electron microscopy scanning. Exploring the mechanism of action of the regenerative rock mass in the goaf provides a certain reference value for the stability control of the regenerated rock mass roadway.

Abstract Persistent consumption of heavily fried and breaded foods over an extended period may have the potential to contribute to the development of cardiovascular, cerebrovascular diseases, and elevated blood pressure. The potential of coating using native starches (cassava, sweet potato, and corn) in batter formulation to reduce oil uptake as well as their effects on other quality attributes (moisture, colour and textural properties) were investigated. The chicken nuggets coated with batter from different starches were fried at 170 °C for 5 to 25 min. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to study changes in microstructural properties of fried chicken nuggets samples at different time intervals. The chicken nuggets coated with batter from sweet potato starch had lower oil (13.09%) and moisture (30.49%) contents compared with those coated with other starches. The SEM revealed that longer frying duration produced chicken nuggets with fewer gas cells and pores and subsequently lower oil content. There are changes in the colour and textural properties of the fried chicken nuggets irrespective of the starches used in batter formulation. Application of starches in batter formulation at different frying time affected some quality attributes of fried chicken nuggets with sweet potato starch having better attributes when compared with others. Abstract The American cockroach, Periplaneta americana (Linnaeus, 1758) (Blattodea: Blattidae), is one of the most common pests that thrive in diverse environments and carries various pathogens, causing critical threats to public health and the ecosystem. We thus report in this study the first observation of decapitated American cockroaches as a result of infestation with scuttle fly parasitoids. Interestingly, behavioral alterations in the form of zombification-like behavior could be observed in cockroaches reared in the laboratory before being decapitated, implying that the insect targets cockroach heads. To identify this parasitoid, cockroaches’ corpora were isolated in jars, and apodous larvae were observed. Larvae developed into small coarctate pupae, and adults emerged. The scuttle flies were collected and exhibited tiny black, brown, to yellowish bodies. The fly was initially identified based on its morphological properties as a member of the order Diptera, family Phoridae. To provide further insights into the morphological attributes of the phorid species, the fly was examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and then identified as Megaselia scalaris accordingly. SEM analysis revealed the distinctive structure of M. scalaris concerning the head, mouth parts, and legs. Specifically, the mouth parts include the labrum, labellum, rostrum, and maxillary palps. Although further investigations are still required to understand the complicated relationships between M. scalaris and American cockroaches, our findings provide a prominent step in the control of American cockroaches using M. scalaris as an efficient biological control agent.

AimThe current study’s aim was to evaluate the potential of various fluoride varnishes to remineralize artificial enamel lesions on primary teeth. Materials and MethodsFor the study, 90 deciduous molar teeth that were implicated for extraction were taken. A window region with a size of 3 × 3 mm was located in the middle of the tooth’s coronal surface. The remaining portion was given a coat of nail polish and given time to dry. A demineralizing solution was used to create the artificial enamel lesion. The samples were randomized into three experimental groups at random, with 30 samples in each group. Group 1: Application of Clinpro White Varnish, Group 2: Application of Duraphat Varnish, and Group 3: Application of MI Varnish. After 14 days, samples from each group were examined under scanning electron microscopy at a magnification of 1000× to determine whether remineralization had occurred. Microhardness was also determined using a microhardness tester. ResultBefore the intervention, the mean demineralized enamel lesion in the Clinpro White Varnish group was 134.44 ± 0.04, in the Duraphat Varnish group was 133.76 ± 0.12, and in the MI Varnish group was 133.89 ± 0.08. After intervention, the maximum remineralized area was found in the MI Varnish group (82.74 ± 0.18) followed by the Clinpro White Varnish group (101.43 ± 0.16) and the Duraphat Varnish group (104.11 ± 0.10). After the intervention, there was a statistically significant difference found between the groups. After the intervention, the maximum microhardness mean value improved in the MI Varnish group (257.03 ± 1.09 to 261.18 ± 1.20) followed by Clinpro White Varnish (258.78 ± 1.64 to 260.10 ± 1.22) and Duraphat Varnish group (255.24 ± 1.51 to 258.02 ± 0.89). ConclusionAccording to the findings of the current investigation, all of the varnishes utilized in this in vitro experiment are capable of correcting early enamel defects on primary teeth. However, MI Varnish group was very effective compared to the Clinpro White Varnish group and the Duraphat Varnish group.

This study investigates the correlation between the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) of undisturbed loess and its collapsibility. Undisturbed loess soil samples, obtained from depths up to 30 meters below the surface in Chang’an District, Xi’an City, Shaanxi Province, were taken for basic physical index tests and collapsibility assessments. SWCC analyses of loess-paleosol samples from different typical strata were conducted and analyzed using scanning electron microscope. The findings reveal a positive correlation between the number of macropores and saturated volumetric water content. Additionaly, the number of pores is positively correlated with the slope of the transition zone, indicating that a higher pore count accelerates the soil's water loss rate. The number of tiny voids and the plasticity index of soil affect the residual moisture content. For different soil layers, saturated volumetric water content and slope of transition zone exhibit a positive correlation with collapsible coefficient. The influence of collapsible coefficient of plastic index close to soil layer on residual volumetric water content is not obvious. The study also indicates a positive correlation between SWCC and the collapsibility coefficient of the loess layer. By approaching loess collapsibility from the direction of unsaturated soil mechanics, this paper introduces a novel research angle for the study of collapsibility.

This study investigated the influence of mineral admixtures (fly ash, silica fume, metakaolin) and curing conditions (water immersion, polyethylene glycol, gunny bags, accelerated curing) on the properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC). The rheological properties, compressive strength, chloride penetration resistance, and microstructure were evaluated. Incorporating mineral admixtures improved the workability, strength (up to 53% increase), and durability of SCC compared to plain mixes, with 20% metakaolin replacement optimal. Water immersion curing enhanced the compressive strength (3–15% increase) and chloride resistance (up to 30% decrease in migration coefficient) owing to improved hydration and microstructural refinement. Mineral admixtures reduced the sensitivity of SCC to the curing method. Microstructural analysis showed higher density and additional C-S-H phases with mineral admixtures under wet curing. The study demonstrates that optimized SCC containing appropriate supplementary cementitious materials and proper external curing can achieve high performance.

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of XP-Endo Finisher (XPF) in conjunction with three different chelating agents, namely, 0.2% chitosan nanoparticles (CNP), 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), and 7% maleic acid (MA) on residual debris and smear layer on the root canal walls of the mandibular premolars. Methods: Eighty extracted human mandibular premolars were used in the study. Canals were prepared using an XP-Endo Shaper, and the final finishing was done with an XPF file. Teeth were randomly divided into four experimental groups based on chelating agents, Group I (XPF + 0.2% CNP), Group II (XPF + 17% EDTA), Group III (XPF + MA), and Group IV XPF + 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) (control group). Teeth were longitudinally split and prepared for scanning electron microscopy analysis. For comparing the smear layer and debris score between groups, the Kruskal–Wallis ANOVA was used, followed by the post hoc Bonferroni test. The level of significance was set at P < 0.05. Results: Group I (XPF + 0.2% CNP) gave the best results (P = 0.001) in all the thirds of root canal, followed by Group II (XPF + 17% EDTA) with P = 0.001. Group III (XPF + MA) showed results similar to that of the control group (XPF + NaOCl) with P = 0.001. There was a significant difference in the scores between Group I (XPF + CNP) and the other three groups. Conclusion: In all three-thirds of a root canal, the use of XPF + 0.2% CNP performed best at removing the smear layer. This was followed by XPF + 17% EDTA and XPF + 7% MA. For all groups, smear layer removal was less efficient in the apical third.

Aim: The present study was conducted to evaluate the dentinal wall adaptation ability of different root canal sealers (mineral trioxide aggregate Fillapex [MTA], EndoSequence BC [ESBC] Sealer, and AH Plus) using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Methods: Forty-five extracted single-rooted human maxillary incisor teeth were selected and divided into three equal groups (n = 15). Working length was established using a #15 K-type file. Canals were prepared with rotary Ni–Ti system to size 30/0.06 or 40/0.06 file using endomotor at 250 rpm, irrigated with 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, 3% NaOCl, and normal saline solution, and dried with paper points. Prepared canals were obturated with gutta-percha cones using the single-cone technique and appropriate sealers. Specimens were stored in saline solution at 37°C for 48 h and evaluated using a SEM. Unpaired t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and post-hoc tests verified the differences between groups and were considered significant at alpha = 5%. Results: None of the specimens showed a gap-free interface. Gaps compared between MTAF and ESBC did not show any statistically significant differences (coronal [P = 0.9757], middle [P = 0.5464], and apical [P = 0.2136] thirds). However, gaps found at the interface of sealer and dentinal wall in root canals filled with AH Plus showed extremely statistically significant differences when compared with MTAF and ESBC (P < 0.0001). Conclusion: Specimens obturated with MTAF and ESBC Sealer showed smaller gaps on SEM analysis than specimens filled with AH Plus.

Force–displacement transducers are key components in in situ nanoindentation systems. The current existing capacitance-type transducers adopted in state-of-the-art commercial in situ nanoindentation systems are restricted by limited maximum ranges, and strain gauge-type transducers in the current in situ nanoindentation systems have the limitation of low resolution and high values of mass. In the paper, we propose a mechanical design and improvement of a low-mass strain gauge-type force–displacement transducer capable of performing high resolution in situ nanoindentation measurements. The transducer mainly consisted of a parallelogram-shaped flexure hinge and two strain gauges. Air resolution, in situ resolution, and mass experiments reported an air force resolution of 5 μN, an in situ force resolution of 5 μN inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and a mass of 6.53 g of such a strain gauge-type load–displacement transducer. Then, the transducer was assembled into a newly developed in situ nanoindentation–atomic force microscope (AFM) hybrid system and a newly developed in situ nanoindentation system. The proposed design successfully performed nanoindentation measurements inside SEM. Based on the results, the proposed strain gauge-type transducer shows great advantages compared to the current state-of-the-art transducers.

This research paper focuses on the use of solid biomass waste, specifically a combination of Polyalthia longifolia seed (PLSF) and graphite (GH) powder, as reinforcements in vinyl ester (VE) composites. The composites were produced via the hand layup method, with the filler concentration varying from 0 to 15 wt% of PLSF and 0–9 wt% of graphite. The objective was to examine the influence of the hybrid filler on the mechanical characteristics of the composites. The mechanical properties of composites prepared from P. longifolia seeds and graphite powder were experimentally characterized. These properties included tensile strength, flexural strength, impact resistance, and hardness. The hybrid composite had a maximum tensile strength of 48.4 MPa, and its tensile modulus was 1.66 GPa. The hybrid filler at 15% wt% of PLSF and 6% of graphite has the highest flexural strength, which is around 148 MPa. The ultimate impact strength and hardness were measured to be 41.3 kJ/m2 and 44.5, respectively, after the addition of 15 and 6 wt% of hybrid filler. In comparison to neat vinyl ester resin, the PLSF/GH‐VE composites exhibited an increase in tensile, flexural, impact, and hardness of 2.69, 1.82, 3.03, and 1.59 times, respectively. Hybrid composite surfaces were analyzed using scanning electron microscopes to determine surface characteristics and fractured surfaces. In addition, the PLSF/GH‐VE composites have been utilized in the production of components for four‐wheelers. Introduction: Sperm morphology analysis is very necessary to understand male fertility and the etiology of infertility. Currently, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been widely used to determine surface topology. In this study, we will compare the effects of spermatozoa cryopreservation using three different types of cryoprotectants, namely Nakagata, modification and Kitazato. The cryoprotectant compositions used are Nakagata (raffinose and skim milk), modified (glycerol and raffinose) and Kitazato (glycerol and trehalose). Methods: SEM analysis was carried out on 8 sperm samples before cryopreservation and after the freeze-thaw process. Results: The results obtain showed that cryoprotectant modification was able to protect spermatozoa morphology better than Nakagata and Kitazato. Analysis revealed damage to plasma membrane, acrosome and loss of mitochondria in all treatment groups compared to fresh sperm. SEM showed obvious signs of post-thaw damage such as missing plasma membranes, sperm showing damaged acrosomes and mitochondria in the middle showing structural disorganization. Conclusion: SEM revealed that cryopreservation caused ultrastructural damage to mice sperm due to freezing and thawing. These details provide valuable data for further research to minimize the damage caused by cryopreservation to mice sperm. Heilongjiang Province, as a major agricultural and forestry province, is rich in walnuts. This kind of shell is rich in source and high in yield. At the same time, it is accompanied by a large number of agricultural wastes. In order to improve this situation, it is necessary to make rational use of waste walnut shells. In this experiment, waste walnut shell was selected as the powder matrix material, and phenolic resin powder with rich carbon content was used as the binder to prepare walnut shell / phenolic resin biomass composites for selective laser sintering. It can not only expand the types of biomass composite powder, but also customize the porous carbon precursor with complex structure through the three-dimensional nature of the technology, and contribute to seawater desalination and new energy. The orthogonal experimental scheme of four factors and three levels was established. The influence of laser power, scanning speed, scanning spacing and layer thickness on the density, bending strength and Z-axis accuracy of sintered parts was discussed by variance analysis and comprehensive weighted evaluation method. The optimal combination of laser sintering process parameters was determined, and the sintering section of the molded parts was characterized by scanning electron microscopy ( SEM). The experimental results showed that the laser power had the greatest influence on the density, bending strength and Z-axis accuracy of the sintered parts. The scanning speed had the least influence on the density and bending strength of the sintered parts. The factor that had the least influence on the Z-axis accuracy was the scanning spacing. A serious risk that harms the safe use of water and affects aquatic ecosystems is water pollution. This occurs when the water's natural equilibrium is disrupted by an excessive amount of substances, both naturally occurring and as a byproduct of human activities, that have varied degrees of toxicity. Radiation from Cs isotopes, which are common components of radioactive waste and are known for their long half-lives (30 years), which are longer than the natural decay processes, is a major source of contamination. Adsorption is a commonly used technique for reducing this kind of contamination, and zeolite chabazite has been chosen as the best adsorbent for cesium in this particular situation. The purpose of this research is to investigate a composite material based on magnesium phosphate cement (MPC). Magnesium oxide (MgO), potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH2PO4), and properly selected retarders are used to create the MPC. The optimal conditions for this composite material are investigated through the utilization of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, BET surface area analysis, and atomic absorption spectroscopy. The principal aim is to enable innovations in the elimination of radioactive waste-contaminated water using effective cesium removal. The most promising results were obtained by using KH2PO4 as an acid, and MgO as a base, and aiming for an M/P ratio of two or four. Furthermore, we chose zeolite chabazite as a crucial component. The best adsorption abilities for Cs were found at Qads = 106.997 mg/g for S2 and Qads = 122.108 mg/g for S1. The composition and structure of Sherobod quartz sand and man-made waste were fully investigated using chemical, scanning electron microscope, X-ray, infrared spectroscopic and differential thermal analysis methods. It was found that the content of lead and manganese oxides in Handiza lead concentrate and manganese waste is 25 - 26 %, respectively, and silicon oxide in Sherabad quartz sand is more than 80 %. According to the results of chemical and physico-chemical analyzes of Sherabad quartz sand and man-made waste, it was found that they can be added as glass components by cleaning them from various additives. The present study reports the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from aqueous extract of Hibiscus tiliaceus L. leaves and their application in dye degradation, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer activities. Analysis using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy revealed that plant metabolite functional groups had a role in the reduction and stability of AgNPs, and X-ray crystallography (XRD) demonstrated that the AgNPs were in crystal form. The UV–vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and zeta potential investigations revealed that the AgNPs were formed with an average size of 88.10 nm in colloidal form and were stable (-49 mV). The field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) confirmed the shape and size of the AgNPs as spherical with a particle size of 30 - 35 nm, respectively. The AgNPs exhibited potential antioxidant activity by total antioxidant, DPPH, and reducing power assays. The biosynthesized AgNPs displayed a wide range of antibacterial activity on Gram-ve and Gram+ve bacteria by the zone of inhibition assay. AgNPs showed good anticancer activity on MCF-7 cells with an IC 50 value of 65.83 µg/mL. Furthermore, AgNPs acted as potential catalysts in combination with the reducing agent sodium borohydride (NaBH 4) for the degradation of methylene blue (MB), methylene orange (MO), and methylene green (MG) dyes. The degradation efficiency of catalyst AgNPs in the attendance of NaBH 4 for 15 min was noted to be 12.8 %, 26.92 %, and 47.56 % for MO, MB, and MG, respectively. The study concluded that green synthesized AgNPs could be highly applicable as an antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer agents in the biomedical field. To evaluate the push-out bond strength (POBS) of AH Plus sealer to root dentin and the adhesive interface quality after calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH) 2) intracanal dressing removal with different final irrigation protocols. After root canal instrumentation and irrigation, 40 root canals were filled with Ca(OH) 2 and sealed. After 14 days, the specimens were randomly distributed according to the irrigation protocols for Ca(OH) 2 removal (n = 10): G H2O (control) - distilled water; G NaOCl - 1% NaOCl; G EDTA - 17% EDTA; G EDTA + NaOCl - 17% EDTA + 1% NaOCl. The root canals were filled with AH Plus sealer and gutta-percha. After 7 days, the roots were sectioned into dentin slices and submitted to POBS test and analysis of the adhesive interface under scanning electron microscope. The POBS data were statistically evaluated (analysis of variance and Tukey test). The Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were used to analyze the adhesive interface (α = 0.05). G H2O , G NaOCl , and G EDTA + NaOCl had similar POBS values, with higher values on the apical third, in comparison with other thirds (P <.05). A homogeneous and free-of-gaps adhesive interface was observed for G H2O , G NaOCl , and G EDTA + NaOCl , with difference between G H2O and G EDTA (P <.05). G H2O and G EDTA + NaOCl presented higher sealer tags formation (P <.05). The final rinse with EDTA for Ca(OH) 2 dressing removal had a negative effect on the POBS of the filling material to root dentin. The use of EDTA followed by NaOCl had results similar to the distilled water, providing uniform and free-of-gaps adhesive interface, and a higher number of sealer tags. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The main disadvantage of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is its persistent dark coloring. The aim of this study was to cover this discoloration on affected primary tooth dentin with different materials and subsequently measure their shear bond strength (SBS). Materials and Methods: In this in vitro study total of 60 primary teeth were demineralized and randomly divided into five groups (n = 12). The tooth surfaces were treated with 38% SDF, and restorative cylinders were built on the dentin as follows: (1) phosphoric acid etching + GLUMA Universal Adhesive (GUA; etch-and-rinse mode) + composite resin (CR); (2) GUA (self-etch mode) + CR; (3) resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI; Fuji II); (4) Surefil One (self-adhesive CR); and (5) TheraCem (self-adhesive resin cement) + CR. After restoration, the specimens were tested for SBS. Failure mode was determined by digital analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's honest significant difference post hoc test. P <0.05 indicated statistical significance. Results: Group 1 had significantly higher mean SBS (P < 0.05) compared to Groups 2-5, while Group 5 had the least SBS (P < 0.001). Mean SBS differences between Groups 2 and 3 were not significant (P = 0.328). Group 4 had lower mean SBS than Groups 1 (P < 0.001) and 2 (P = 0.17). Most groups showed adhesive failure. Conclusion: CR associated with the universal adhesive in etch-and-rinse mode had much higher SBS than the other groups; therefore, we recommend it to cover the dark discoloration generated by SDF. The rapid growth of Natural Fiber Laminate (NFL) innovation is a direct response to environmental challenges, positioning these materials as superior alternatives to synthetic fiber composites. This paper delved into the outcomes of an extensive experimental study investigating the influence of sisal fiber (SLF), banana fiber (BF), and glass fiber (GF) on the mechanical and microstructural characteristics of concrete. The water absorption curves were established for sisal fiber concrete (SLFC), banana fiber concrete (BFC), and glass fiber concrete (GFC). Furthermore, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) observations were conducted to perform microanalysis and failure analysis of the tested specimens. The results revealed significant improvements in the concrete containing fibers compared to its counterpart in fiber-free concrete. For mixtures with a water-to-binder (W/B) ratio of 0.3, the most optimal mix (GF-30-135) showed improvements in compressive strength, flexural strength, and splitting tensile strengths by 4.13%, 8.93%, and 10.10%, respectively. On the other hand, for W/B of 0.4, mix GF-30-135 showed improvements of 5.05%, 8.55%, and 11.60%, respectively. Furthermore, as the fiber content increased, microscopic analyses revealed a weakening of the bond between the fibers and the rest of the matrix, contributing to the deterioration of the mechanical properties. Oil-tea belongs to the Camellia genus, an important oil crop in China. However, oil-tea is taxonomically challenging due to its morphological variation, polyploidy, and interspecific hybridization. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the flower organs' morphology and pollen micro-morphology of 18 oil-tea genotypes in detail and discussed their significance for oil-tea taxonomy. The quantitative parameters of flowers were measured using Vernier caliper measurements. Pollen morphology was observed and photographed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicated that the flower size varied significantly among the tested oil-tea genotypes, with the corolla diameter ranging from 42.25 μm in C. meiocarpa 'LP' to 89.51 μm in C. oleifera 'ASX09'. The pollen grains of oil-tea are monads and medium grade in pollen size. There were two types of polar views, including triangular or subcircular, with a polar axis length (P) ranging from 27.5 μm in C. oleifera 'CY67' to 59.04 μm in C. mairei (H. Lév.) Melch. var. lapidea (Y.C. Wu) Sealy. The equatorial views exhibited oblate, spherical, or oblong shapes, with an equatorial axis length (E) of 21.32 to 41.62 μm. The pollen exine sculpture was perforate, verrucate, and reticulate. The perforation lumina diameter (D) ranged from 0.29 μm in C. magniflora Chang to 1.22 μm in C. yuhsienensis Hu, and the perforation width (W) varied from 0.77 μm in C. osmantha to 1.40 μm in C. gauchowensis 'HM349', respectively. Qualitative clustering analysis (Q-type cluster) and principal component analysis (PCA) were conducted using eleven indexes of flower and pollen morphology, and the 18 oil-tea genotypes were classified into three categories. In addition, the correlation analysis showed that there was a significant correlation between pollen size and flower morphology or pollen exine sculpture. The American cockroach, Periplaneta americana (Linnaeus, 1758) (Blattodea: Blattidae), is one of the most common pests that thrive in diverse environments and carries various pathogens, causing critical threats to public health and the ecosystem. We thus report in this study the first observation of decapitated American cockroaches as a result of infestation with scuttle fly parasitoids. Interestingly, behavioral alterations in the form of zombification-like behavior could be observed in cockroaches reared in the laboratory before being decapitated, implying that the insect targets cockroach heads. To identify this parasitoid, cockroaches' corpora were isolated in jars, and apodous larvae were observed. Larvae developed into small coarctate pupae, and adults emerged. The scuttle flies were collected and exhibited tiny black, brown, to yellowish bodies. The fly was initially identified based on its morphological properties as a member of the order Diptera, family Phoridae. To provide further insights into the morphological attributes of the phorid species, the fly was examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and then identified as Megaselia scalaris accordingly. SEM analysis revealed the distinctive structure of M. scalaris concerning the head, mouth parts, and legs. Specifically, the mouth parts include the labrum, labellum, rostrum, and maxillary palps. Although further investigations are still required to understand the complicated relationships between M. scalaris and American cockroaches, our findings provide a prominent step in the control of American cockroaches using M. scalaris as an efficient biological control agent. Synthesis of high quality and quantity of graphene by cost-effective methods are highly desirable for various application. In electrochemical exfoliation, graphite foil has been used as carbon source for the synthesis of high yield of graphene flakes. Electrochemical exfoliation is one of the faster and cheaper method to synthesize graphene sheets. In this work, five different types of concentration of sulphuric acid were used for electrochemical exfoliation. The electrochemical cell design where graphite foil as anode and copper foil as cathode which were connected to DC power supply of 5V. To examine the morphology scanning electron microscope (SEM) was employed in which the sheet structures with large lateral dimension and thin graphene flakes. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that exfoliated graphene samples showed a significant peak at about 2θ = 26º corresponded to graphite. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Image analysis techniques have been applied and shown to be a valuable tool in nuclear forensics analysis. The interlaboratory exercise reported here has tested quantitative and qualitative approaches for characterizing nuclear materials. Particle size, surface features and morphology descriptions were compared by four laboratories on a common image set generated by Scanning Electron Microscopy and Digital Light Microscopy. Quantitative analysis of the image sets through the Morphological Analysis for MAterials software highlighted the strength of image analysis, but also that the application of the software alone can introduce significant bias in the analysis. Qualitative morphology descriptions following the process outlined by Tamasi et al. (J Radioanal Nuclear Chem 307:1611–1619, 2015) were compared with a discussion on the robustness and reproducibility of the results. Manganese slag (MS) containing a certain amount of active hydration substances may be used as a kind of cementitious material. In the present study, we measured the mass, the relative dynamic modulus of elasticity (RDME), and the flexural and compressive strengths of MS high-performance concrete (MS-HPC) with added basalt fibers exposed to NaCl freeze–thaw cycles (N-FCs), NaCl dry–wet alternations (N-DAs), and Na2SO4 dry–wet alternations (NS-DAs). Scanning electron microscope energy-dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS) spectra, thermogravimetric analysis (TG) curves, and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) curves were obtained. The mass ratio of MS ranged from 0% to 40%. The volume ratio of basalt fibers varied from 0% to 2%. We found that, as a result of salt action, the mass loss rate (MLR) exhibited linear functions which were inversely correlated with the mass ratio of MS and the volume ratio of basalt fibers. After salt action, MLR increased by rates of 0~56.3%, but this increase was attenuated by the addition of MS and basalt fibers. Corresponding increases in RDME exhibited a linear function which was positively correlated with MS mass ratios in a range of 0~55.1%. The addition of MS and basalt fibers also led to decreased attenuation of mechanical strength, while the addition of MS led to increased levels of flocculent hydration products and the elements Mn, Mg, and Fe. CaClOH and CaSO4 crystals were observed in XRD curves after N-DA and NS-DA actions, respectively. Finally, the addition of MS resulted in increased variation in TG values.
