Chitosan used for protein recovery from surimi wash water (SWW) appears to work by mechanical entrapment and electrostatic interaction of chitosan amino groups with anionic groups on proteins. Effectiveness is increased by chitosan (Chi) complexation with alginate (Alg). Insoluble solids from SWW (P1) and soluble solids coagulated by Chi-Alg (P2) were recovered by centrifugation and freeze-dried. Protein content of P1 and P2 was 61.4 and 73.1 %, respectively. Flistidine, lysine, methionine and phenylalanine in the recovered proteins were higher than in commercial feed ingredients. In a rat feeding trial, a casein control and diets formulated with SWW protein at 10% and 15% substitution showed no significant difference (p < 0.05) in protein efficiency ratio. Blood chemistries revealed no deleterious effect Of protein substitution or chitosan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the capabilities of the U.S. Marine Corps to deploy a ground-based crisis-response force during crisis as of July 2016. Among the possible forward deployed forces is a Marine expeditionary unit (MEU) operating from an amphibious ready group (ARG). Also cited are the current shortage of amphibious vessels of the Navy, and the creation of the Special Purpose Marine AirGround Task Force Crisis Response (SPMAGTF-CR) in 2013 due to the attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya.

166. Systematic Error Associated with Apparatus 2 of the USP Dissolution Test II: Effects of Deviations in Vessel Curvature from That of a Sphere

- Abstract
Dissolution vessels made from glass or plastic are recognized by the USP as being suitable for dissolution testing. Glass vessels with a bottom inside curvature flatter than that of a sphere can cause a high bias in dissolution results; vessels with a steeper curvature can cause a low bias. The inside bottom curvature of plastic vessels adhered closely to the curvature of a sphere. The plastic vessels are preferable for use if the drug is not adsorbed and the vessel is not attacked by the dissolution medium. Bias in results between individual positions of a dissolution apparatus was traced to two shafts which were not vertical.

167. Automated Sampling of In VitroDissolution Medium: Effect of Sampling Probes on Dissolution Rate of Prednisone Tablets
- Author

Savage, Thomas S. and Wells, Clyde E.
- Abstract
The effect of sampling probe size and location on the in vitrodissolution rate of prednisone tablets was examined. Using USP XX Apparatus 2 with an automated sampling system, dissolution rates were determined using two types of large filter-tipped probes and a small capillary probe. Each probe was tested at three locations within the kettle. The large probes caused hydrodynamic changes which, when compared with results obtained through manual sampling, resulted in significant changes in dissolution rates at each location. These changes were less evident when the capillary probe was used, with an insignificant difference between results of automated and manual sampling when the capillary probe was placed midway between the paddle shaft and the kettle wall.

169. Intestinal Perforation Following Exchange Transfusion
- Author

- Abstract
An infant with Rhesus hemolytic disease developed a perforation of the cecum after two exchange transfusions. The cause is unknown, but theories include alteration of hemodynamics, leaching out of toxic substances from polyvinyl tubing, and a Shwartzman reaction. It is likely that the final common event is ischemia to the bowel wall. Necrotizing colitis is probably the underlying pathological lesion in most if not all cases. Once perforation has occurred surgical intervention is essential for survival. Early exchange transfusion, careful positioning of the cannula, and stopping if warning signs occur will reduce the incidence of this complication.

Savage, T. and J.R. Sullivan. 1978. Growth and Claw Regeneration of the Stone Crab,Menippe mercenaria. Fla. Mar. Res. Publ. No. 32.23 pp. Laboratory-maintained and feralcrabs were observed for incremental carapace width and major and minor claw growth.Morphometric relationships for male and female carapace width against length andcarapace width against major and minor claw sizes were derived. Only slopes of carapacewidth us. female major and male minor claws were not significantly different at the 95%confidence level. Feral normal male incremental growth exceeded that of normal femalesfor all parameters. Normal laboratory females possessed greater average carapace widthgrowth but less claw growth than did their male counterparts. All laboratory growth wasmore uniform but incrementally smaller than corresponding field growth. A hypotheticalgrowth plot constructed from incremental growth of several crabs indicated ages atattainment of sexual maturity and legal size to be 10 and 30 months. A pictorial descriptionof stone crab claw regeneration is presented. Minor claws realized greater regenerationafter one and two molts (73.5% and 96.5% of pre-autotomized sizes) than did major claws(68.6% and 89.0%). Intermolt interval of laboratory crabs increased with larger carapacewidth sizes. Claw loss shortened or lengthened duration of the intermolt period dependingupon whether the claw was removed shortly after a molt or later in the cycle. (Document has 27 pages.)
