Ever-increasing amount of data is produced by particle detectors in their quest to unveil the laws of Nature. The large data rate requires the use of specialized triggers that promptly reduce the data rate to a manageable level; however, in doing so, unexpected new phenomena may escape detection. Additionally, the large data rate is increasingly difficult to analyze effectively, which has led to a recent revolution on machine learning techniques. Here, we present a methodology based on recent quantum compression techniques that has the capacity to store exponentially more amount of information than classically available methods. To demonstrate this, we encode the full neutrino telescope event information using parity observables in an IBM quantum processor using 8 qubits. Then we show that we can recover the information stored on the quantum computer with a fidelity of 84%. Finally, we illustrate the use of our protocol by performing a classification task that separates electron-neutrino events to muon-neutrinos events in a neutrino telescope. This new capability would eventually allow us to solve the street light effect in particle physics, where we only record signatures of particles with which we are familiar.

Despite the thousands of planets in orbit around stars known to date, the mechanisms of planetary formation, migration, and atmospheric loss remain unresolved. In this work, we confirm the planetary nature of a young Saturn-size planet transiting a solar-type star every 8.03 d, TOI-1135\,b. The age of the parent star is estimated to be in the interval of 125--1000 Myr based on various activity and age indicators, including its stellar rotation period of 5.13\,$\pm$\,0.27 d and the intensity of photospheric lithium. We obtained follow-up photometry and spectroscopy, including precise radial velocity measurements using the CARMENES spectrograph, which together with the TESS data allowed us to fully characterise the parent star and its planet. As expected for its youth, the star is rather active and shows strong photometric and spectroscopic variability correlating with its rotation period. We modelled the stellar variability using Gaussian process regression. We measured the planetary radius at 9.02\,$\pm$\,0.23 R$_\oplus$ (0.81\,$\pm$\,0.02 R$_{\mathrm{Jup}}$) and determined a 3$\sigma$ upper limit of $<$\,51.4 M$_\oplus$ ($<$\,0.16 \,M$_{\rm{Jup}}$) on the planetary mass by adopting a circular orbit. Our results indicate that TOI-1135\,b is an inflated planet less massive than Saturn or Jupiter but with a similar radius, which could be in the process of losing its atmosphere by photoevaporation. This new young planet occupies a region of the mass-radius diagram where older planets are scarse, and it could be very helpful to understanding the lower frequency of planets with sizes between Neptune and Saturn., Comment: Accepted in A&A. 18 pages, 15 figures

We present the first detection in space of O-protonated carbonyl sulfide (\ch{HOCS+}), in the midst of an ultradeep molecular line survey toward the G+0.693-0.027 molecular cloud. From the observation of all $K$$_a$ = 0 transitions ranging from $J$$_{lo}$ = 2 to $J$$_{lo}$ = 13 of \ch{HOCS+} covered by our survey, we derive a column density of $N$ = (9 $\pm$ 2)$\times$10$^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$, translating into a fractional abundance relative to H$_2$ of $\sim$7$\times$10$^{-11}$. Conversely, the S-protonated \ch{HSCO+} isomer remains undetected, and we derive an upper limit to its abundance with respect to H$_2$ of $\leq$3$\times$10$^{-11}$, a factor of $\geq$2.3 less abundant than \ch{HOCS+}. We obtain a \ch{HOCS+}/OCS ratio of $\sim$2.5$\times$10$^{-3}$, in good agreement with the prediction of astrochemical models. These models show that one of the main chemical routes to the interstellar formation of \ch{HOCS+} is likely the protonation of OCS, which appears to be more efficient at the oxygen end. Also, we find that high values of cosmic-ray ionisation rates (10$^{-15}$-10$^{-14}$ s$^{-1}$) are needed to reproduce the observed abundance of \ch{HOCS+}. In addition, we compare the O/S ratio across different interstellar environments. G+0.693-0.027 appears as the source with the lowest O/S ratio. We find a \ch{HOCO+}/\ch{HOCS+} ratio of $\sim$31, in accordance with other O/S molecular pairs detected toward this region and also close to the O/S solar value ($\sim$37). This fact indicates that S is not significantly depleted within this cloud due to the action of large-scale shocks, unlike in other sources where S-bearing species remain trapped on icy dust grains., Comment: Forthcoming paper in The Astrophysical Journal (in press)

Cram\'er-Rao constitutes a crucial lower bound for the mean squared error of an estimator in frequentist parameter estimation, albeit paradoxically demanding highly accurate prior knowledge of the parameter to be estimated. Indeed, this information is needed to construct the optimal unbiased estimator, which is highly dependent on the parameter. Conversely, Bhattacharyya bounds result in a more resilient estimation about prior accuracy by imposing additional constraints on the estimator. Initially, we conduct a quantitative comparison of the performance between Cram\'er-Rao and Bhattacharyya bounds when faced with less-than-ideal prior knowledge of the parameter. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the $n^{th}$order classical and quantum Bhattacharyya bounds cannot be computed -- given the absence of estimators satisfying the constraints -- under specific conditions tied to the dimension $m$ of the discrete system. Intriguingly, for a system with the same dimension $m$, the maximum non-trivial order $n$ is $m-1$ in the classical case, while in the quantum realm, it extends to $m(m+1)/2-1$. In this work, we introduce Variational Umbrella Seeding, a novel technique for computing nucleation barriers. This new method, a refinement of the original seeding approach, is far less sensitive to the choice of order parameter for measuring the size of a nucleus. Consequently, it surpasses seeding in accuracy, and Umbrella Sampling in computational speed. We test the method extensively and demonstrate excellent accuracy for crystal nucleation of nearly hard spheres and of two distinct models of water: mW and TIP4P/ICE. This method can easily be extended to calculate nucleation barriers for homogeneous melting, condensation, and cavitation.

The emissions of Taylor cones from a wide range of ionic liquids (ILs) have been tested in vacuo in an attempt to identify what physical properties favor the purely ionic regime (PIR). This regime is well known in the case of Taylor cones of liquid metals. For nonmetallic liquids, it has been previously observed in conventional (capillary tube) electrospray sources at room temperature only for the room temperature molten salt (ionic liquid) EMI-BF4 (EMI=1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium). A large number of other ILs and their mixtures have been studied here, most of which (but not all) are unable to reach the PIR at room temperature. Based on these results and additional theoretical considerations, strong support is assembled for the notion that the PIR is favored by ILs not only of high electrical conductivity but also of high surface tension. This hypothesis is confirmed by tests with three recently synthesized ILs, EMI-GaCl4, EMI-C(CN)3, and EMI-N(CN)2, all of which combine exceptional surface tension and electrical conductivity, and all of which reach the PIR at room temperature far more readily than EMI-BF4.

The use of hyperspectral imaging for medical applications is becoming more common in recent years. One of the main obstacles that researchers find when developing hyperspectral algorithms for medical applications is the lack of specific, publicly available, and hyperspectral medical data. The work described in this paper was developed within the framework of the European project HELICoiD (HypErspectraL Imaging Cancer Detection), which had as a main goal the application of hyperspectral imaging to the delineation of brain tumors in real-time during neurosurgical operations. In this paper, the methodology followed to generate the first hyperspectral database of in-vivo human brain tissues is presented. Data was acquired employing a customized hyperspectral acquisition system capable of capturing information in the Visual and Near InfraRed (VNIR) range from 400 to 1000 nm. Repeatability was assessed for the cases where two images of the same scene were captured consecutively. The analysis reveals that the system works more efficiently in the spectral range between 450 and 900 nm. A total of 36 hyperspectral images from 22 different patients were obtained. From these data, more than 300 000 spectral signatures were labeled employing a semi-automatic methodology based on the spectral angle mapper algorithm. Four different classes were defined: normal tissue, tumor tissue, blood vessel, and background elements. Consciousness has been historically a heavily debated topic in engineering, science, and philosophy. On the contrary, awareness had less success in raising the interest of scholars in the past. However, things are changing as more and more researchers are getting interested in answering questions concerning what awareness is and how it can be artificially generated. The landscape is rapidly evolving, with multiple voices and interpretations of the concept being conceived and techniques being developed. The goal of this paper is to summarize and discuss the ones among these voices connected with projects funded by the EIC Pathfinder Challenge called ``Awareness Inside'', a nonrecurring call for proposals within Horizon Europe designed specifically for fostering research on natural and synthetic awareness. In this perspective, we dedicate special attention to challenges and promises of applying synthetic awareness in robotics, as the development of mature techniques in this new field is expected to have a special impact on generating more capable and trustworthy embodied systems.

Billions of IoT devices are deployed worldwide and batteries are their main power source. However, these batteries are bulky, short-lived and full of hazardous chemicals that damage our environment. Relying on batteries is not a sustainable solution for the future IoT. As an alternative, battery-less devices run on long-lived capacitors charged using energy harvesters. The small energy storage capacity of capacitors results in an intermittent on-off behaviour. LoRaWAN is a popular Low Power Wide Area Network technology used in many IoT devices and can be used in these new scenarios. In this work, we present a Markov model to characterize the performance of battery-less LoRaWAN devices for uplink and downlink transmissions and we evaluate their performance in terms of the parameters that define the model (i.e., device configuration, application behaviour and environmental conditions). Results show that LoRaWAN battery-less communications are feasible if choosing the proper configuration (i.e., capacitor size, turn-on voltage threshold) for different application behaviour (i.e., transmission interval, UL/DL packet sizes) and environmental conditions (i.e., energy harvesting rate). Since downlink in the second reception window highly affects the performance, only small DL packet sizes should be considered for these devices. Besides, a 47 mF capacitor can support 1 Byte $SF7$ transmissions every 60 s at an energy harvesting rate of 1 mW. Nowadays, the projects LIFE (Laser Inertial Fusion Energy) in USA and HiPER (High Power Laser Energy Research) in Europe are the most advanced ones to demonstrate laser fusion energy viability. One of the main points of concern to properly achieve ignition is the performance of the final optics (lenses) under the severe irradiation conditions that take place in fusion facilities. In this paper, we calculate the radiation fluxes and doses as well as the radiation-induced temperature enhancement and colour centre formation in final lenses assuming realistic geometrical configurations for HiPER and LIFE. On these bases, the mechanical stresses generated by the established temperature gradients are evaluated showing that from a mechanical point of view lenses only fulfill specifications if ions resulting from the imploding target are mitigated. The absorption coefficient of the lenses is calculated during reactor startup and steady-state operation. The obtained results evidence the necessity of new solutions to tackle ignition problems during the startup process for HiPER. Finally, we evaluated the effect of temperature gradients on focal length changes and lens surface deformations. In summary, we discuss the capabilities and weak points of silica lenses and propose alternatives to overcome predictable problems.

By 2035, the need for battery-grade lithium is expected to quadruple. About half of this lithium is currently sourced from brines and must be converted from a chloride into lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) through a process called softening. Conventional softening methods using sodium or potassium salts contribute to carbon emissions during reagent mining and battery manufacturing, exacerbating global warming. This study introduces an alternative approach using carbon dioxide (CO2(g)) as the carbonating reagent in the lithium softening process, offering a carbon capture solution. We employed an active learning-driven high-throughput method to rapidly capture CO2(g) and convert it to lithium carbonate. The model was simplified by focusing on the elemental concentrations of C, Li, and N for practical measurement and tracking, avoiding the complexities of ion speciation equilibria. This approach led to an optimized lithium carbonate process that capitalizes on CO2(g) capture and improves the battery metal supply chain's carbon efficiency.

In this paper we tackle a problem of optimal design and location of Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) for structures subjected to earthquake ground motions, using a novel meta-heuristic algorithm. Specifically, the Coral Reefs Optimization (CRO) with Substrate Layer (CRO-SL) is proposed as a competitive co-evolution algorithm with different exploration procedures within a single population of solutions. The proposed approach is able to solve the TMD design and location problem, by exploiting the combination of different types of searching mechanisms. This promotes a powerful evolutionary-like algorithm for optimization problems, which is shown to be very effective in this particular problem of TMDs tuning. The proposed algorithm's performance has been evaluated and compared with several reference algorithms in two building models with two and four floors, respectively.

From the outset, batteries have been the main power source for the Internet of Things (IoT). However, replacing and disposing of billions of dead batteries per year is costly in terms of maintenance and ecologically irresponsible. Since batteries are one of the greatest threats to a sustainable IoT, battery-less devices are the solution to this problem. These devices run on long-lived capacitors charged using various forms of energy harvesting, which results in intermittent on-off device behaviour. In this work, we model this intermittent battery-less behaviour for LoRaWAN devices. This model allows us to characterize the performance with the aim to determine under which conditions a LoRaWAN device can work without batteries, and how its parameters should be configured. Results show that the reliability directly depends on device configurations (i.e., capacitor size, turn-on voltage threshold), application behaviour (i.e., transmission interval, packet size) and environmental conditions (i.e., energy harvesting rate).

This paper presents an experimental study of the influence of heat losses on the onset of thermoacoustic instabilities in methane-air premixed flames propagating in a horizontal tube of small diameter, $D = 10$ mm. Flames are ignited at the open end of the tube and propagate towards the closed end undergoing strong oscillations of different features due to the interaction with acoustic waves. Different regimes are reproduced in these experiments, namely the well-known primary and secondary thermoacoustic instabilities, which are strongly dependent on mixture equivalence ratio, fuel properties and geometric constraints of the combustion chamber. The frequency of oscillation and its axial location are controlled through the tube length $L$ and the intensity of heat losses. Main experimental observations show that classical one-dimensional predictions of the oscillation frequency do not accurately describe the phenomena under non-adiabatic real scenarios. Besides the experimental measurements, a quasi-one-dimensional heat transfer analysis of the burnt gases downstream of the flame is provided. This study introduced the effect of heat losses at the walls of the tube on the interplay between the acoustic field and the reaction sheet. As a result, this analysis provides an improved description of the interaction and accurately predicts the excited flame-oscillation harmonics through the eigenvalues of the non-adiabatic acoustics model. Unlike the original one-dimensional adiabatic analysis, the comparison between the flame oscillation frequency provided by the non-adiabatic extended theory and the frequencies measured in our experiments is in great agreement in the whole range of temperatures considered. This confirms the importance of heat losses in the modulation of the instabilities and the transition between the different flame oscillation regimes.

In the Staged Progression (SP) epidemic models, infected individuals are classified into a suitable number of states. The goal of these models is to describe as closely as possible the effect of differences in infectiousness exhibited by individuals going through the different stages. The main objective of this work is to study, from the methodological point of view, the behavior of solutions of the discrete time SP models without reinfection and with a general incidence function. Besides calculating $\mathcal{R}_{0}$, we find bounds for the epidemic final size, characterize the asymptotic behavior of the infected classes, give results about the final monotonicity of the infected classes, and obtain results regarding the initial dynamics of the prevalence of the disease. Moreover, we incorporate into the model the probability distribution of the number of contacts in order to make the model amenable to study its effect in the dynamics of the disease.

In this work we present a reduction result for discrete time systems with two time scales. In order to be valid, previous results in the field require some strong hypotheses that are difficult to check in practical applications. Roughly speaking, the iterates of a map as well as their differentials must converge uniformly on compact sets. Here, we eliminate the hypothesis of uniform convergence of the differentials at no significant cost in the conclusions of the result. This new result is then used to extend to nonlinear cases the reduction of some population discrete models involving processes acting at different time scales. In practical cases, some processes that occur at a fast time scale are often only measured at slow time intervals, notably mortality. For a general class of linear models that include such kind of processes, it has been shown that a more realistic approach requires the re-scaling of those processes to be considered at the fast time scale. We develop the same type of re-scaling in some nonlinear models and prove the corresponding reduction results. We also provide an application to a particular model of a structured population in a two-patch environment.

The Padul Fault is located in the Central Betic Cordillera, formed in the framework of the NW-SE Eurasian-African plate convergence. In the Internal Zone, large E-W to NE-SW folds of western Sierra Nevada accommodated the greatest NW-SE shortening and uplift of the cordillera. However, GPS networks reveal a present-day dominant E-W to NE-SW extensional setting at surface. The Padul Fault is the most relevant and best exposed active normal fault that accommodates most of the NE-SW extension of the Central Betics. This WSW-wards dipping fault, formed by several segments of up to 7 km maximum length, favored the uplift of the Sierra Nevada footwall away from the Padul graben hanging wall. A non-permanent GPS network installed in 1999 constrains an average horizontal extensional rate of 0.5 mm/yr in N66{\deg}E direction. The fault length suggests that a (maximum) 6 magnitude earthquake may be expected, but the absence of instrumental or historical seismic events would indicate that fault activity occurs at least partially by creep. Striae on fault surfaces evidence normal-sinistral kinematics, suggesting that the Padul Fault may have been a main transfer fault of the westernmost end of the Sierra Nevada antiform. Nevertheless, GPS results evidence: (1) shortening in the Sierra Nevada antiform is in its latest stages, and (2) the present-day fault shows normal with minor oblique dextral displacements. The recent change in Padul fault kinematics will be related to the present-day dominance of the ENE-WSW regional extension versus ~ NNW-SSE shortening that produced the uplift and northwestwards displacement of Sierra Nevada antiform. This region illustrates the importance of heterogeneous brittle extensional tectonics in the latest uplift stages of compressional orogens, as well as the interaction of folding during the development of faults at shallow crustal levels.

Searches for anomalous neutral triple gauge boson couplings (NTGCs) provide important tests for the gauge structure of the standard model. In SMEFT ("standard model effective field theory") NTGCs appear only at the level of dimension-8 operators. While the phenomenology of these operators has been discussed extensively in the literature, renormalizable UV models that can generate these operators are scarce. In this work, we study a variety of extensions of the SM with heavy fermions and calculate their matching to d = 8 NTGC operators. We point out that the complete matching of UV models requires four different CP-conserving d = 8 operators and that the single CPC d = 8 operator, most commonly used by the experimental collaborations, does not describe all possible NTGC form factors. Despite stringent experimental constraints on NTGCs, limits on the scale of UV models are relatively weak, because their contributions are doubly suppressed (being d = 8 and 1-loop). We suggest a series of benchmark UV scenarios suitable for interpreting searches for NTGCs in the upcoming LHC runs, obtain their current limits and provide estimates for the expected sensitivity of the high-luminosity LHC., Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures

In this work we develop a discrete model of competing species affected by a common parasite. We analyze the influence of the fast development of the shared disease on the community dynamics. The model is presented under the form of a two time scales discrete system with four variables. Thus, it becomes analytically tractable with the help of the appropriate reduction method. The 2-dimensional reduced system, that has the same the asymptotic behaviour of the full model, is a generalization of the Leslie-Gower competition model. It has the unfrequent property in this kind of models of including multiple equilibrium attractors of mixed type. The analysis of the reduced system shows that parasites can completely alter the outcome of competition depending on the parasite's basic reproductive number R0. In some cases, initial conditions decide among several exclusion or coexistence scenarios.

The main aim of the work is to present a general class of two time scales discrete-time epidemic models. In the proposed framework the disease dynamics is considered to act on a slower time scale than a second different process that could represent movements between spatial locations, changes of individual activities or behaviours, or others. To include a sufficiently general disease model, we first build up from first principles a discrete-time Susceptible-Exposed-Infectious-Recovered-Susceptible (SEIRS) model and characterize the eradication or endemicity of the disease with the help of its basic reproduction number R0. Then, we propose a general full model that includes sequentially the two processes at different time scales, and proceed to its analysis through a reduced model. The basic reproduction number R0 of the reduced system gives a good approximation of the R0 of the full model since it serves at analyzing its asymptotic behaviour. As an illustration of the proposed general framework, it is shown that there exist conditions under which a locally endemic disease, considering isolated patches in a metapopulation, can be eradicated globally by establishing the appropriate movements between patches.

In this work we address the analysis of discrete-time models of structured metapopulations subject to environmental stochasticity. Previous works on these models made use of the fact that migrations between the patches can be considered fast with respect to demography (maturation, survival, reproduction) in the population. It was assumed that, within each time step of the model, there are many fast migration steps followed by one slow demographic event. This assumption allowed one to apply approximate reduction techniques that eased the model analysis. It is however a questionable issue in some cases since, in particular, individuals can die at any moment of the time step. We propose new non-equivalent models in which we re-scale survival to consider its effect on the fast scale. We propose a more general formulation of the approximate reduction techniques so that they also apply to the proposed new models. We prove that the main asymptotic elements in this kind of stochastic models, the Stochastic Growth Rate (SGR) and the Scaled Logarithmic Variance (SLV), can be related between the original and the reduced systems, so that the analysis of the latter allows us to ascertain the population fate in the first. Then we go on to considering some cases where we illustrate the reduction technique and show the differences between both modelling options. In some cases using one option represents exponential growth, whereas the other yields extinction.

In this kind of model, the main characteristic that determines population viability in the long term is the stochastic growth rate (SGR) denoted $\lambda_S$. When $\lambda_S$ is larger than one, the population grows exponentially with probability one and when it is smaller than one, the population goes extinct with probability one. However, even in very simple situations it is not possible to calculate the SGR analytically. The literature offers some approximations for the case in which environmental variability is low, and there are also some lower and upper bounds, but there is no study of the practical situations in which they would be tight. Some new bounds for the SGR are built and the conditions under which each bound works best are analyzed. These bounds are used to give some necessary and some sufficient conditions for population explosion and extinction that are easy to check in practice. The general results are applied to several cases, amongst them a population structured as juveniles and adults living in an environment switching randomly between "rich" and "poor".

Cancer subtyping is one of the most challenging tasks in digital pathology, where Multiple Instance Learning (MIL) by processing gigapixel whole slide images (WSIs) has been in the spotlight of recent research. However, MIL approaches do not take advantage of inter- and intra-magnification information contained in WSIs. In this work, we present GRASP, a novel graph-structured multi-magnification framework for processing WSIs in digital pathology. Our approach is designed to dynamically emulate the pathologist's behavior in handling WSIs and benefits from the hierarchical structure of WSIs. GRASP, which introduces a convergence-based node aggregation instead of traditional pooling mechanisms, outperforms state-of-the-art methods over two distinct cancer datasets by a margin of up to 10% balanced accuracy, while being 7 times smaller than the closest-performing state-of-the-art model in terms of the number of parameters. Our results show that GRASP is dynamic in finding and consulting with different magnifications for subtyping cancers and is reliable and stable across different hyperparameters. The model's behavior has been evaluated by two expert pathologists confirming the interpretability of the model's dynamic. We also provide a theoretical foundation, along with empirical evidence, for our work, explaining how GRASP interacts with different magnifications and nodes in the graph to make predictions. We believe that the strong characteristics yet simple structure of GRASP will encourage the development of interpretable, structure-based designs for WSI representation in digital pathology.
