This article analises how and why an image of San Sebastian had to be imported from Chile and settled in a church of north Neuquén (Argentina). This fact will allow us to understand how the emergence of the nation-state in Argentina was perceived, signified and lived by the frontier's inhabitants. Particulary, it will throw some light on the relations between religion and nationalism and on the invisivility/visibility of the relations across the Andean mountains.

In this article we trace the changes undergone by the cult and festival of San Sebastian in Las Ovejas, Neuquén, near the Chilean border, over recent years. There have been a series of transformations intimately related to institutional changes in the Catholic Church, to Argentine political and economic life and to local and regional processes. The democratic reopening since 1983 and the almost simultaneous economic integration project for the Southern Cone, called Mercosur, meant the opening of two relatively closed national economies and their gradual integration into a single market, aiming at higher competitiveness and access to international markets. The latter requires international borders to become more permeable. The heterogeneity of actors (priests, politicians, devotees, etc.) and interests (economic, tourist, religious, etc.) involved in the festival indicate its multi-vocal nature. The origin of the celebration is linked to the severing of Trans-Andean relations towards mid 20th Century. San Sebastian’s devotion comes as a mediator between local and Argentine national belonging, its Chilean past and institutionalization under the Catholic Church. An analysis of the organization and meaning of the celebration allows us to reflect upon certain classical and apparently antagonistic anthropological categories, such as tradition and innovation, conflict and harmony.

The Santos and Campos basins, offshore southeastern Brazil, contain layered evaporite sequences (LES) deposited during the Late Aptian, marking the end of lacustrine and beginning of restricted marine conditions. Density and velocity differences between evaporite minerals such as halite, anhydrite, carnalite, tachyhydrite and other bittern salts result in strong seismic impedance contrasts and therefore enable excellent stratal imaging of internal salt deformation. Different acoustic responses allow a detailed analysis of the internal deformation of evaporites, with the corresponding mechanical properties providing constraints on regional salt flow in the Santos and Campos basins. Detailed mapping and analysis of deformed LES support conclusions from cross-section restorations and provide insight on local salt flow and deformation mechanisms. This study utilizes kinematically restored regional sections to characterize overall basin-wide salt flow, while leveraging salt facies and their control on internal salt fold styles to demonstrate localized salt deformation. The important results from this study are the following. a) Santos and Campos basins are linked extension-contraction systems, however pre-existing basin-wide changes in paleo-topography represents a fundamental control in the overall salt flow, accounting for much of the downdip contraction in the middle of the basins rather than the toe of the system. b) Salt mobilization due to gravity initiated early and there is evidence that it was contemporaneous with evaporite deposition in many parts of the basins. Intrasalt unconformities and stratigraphic features are presented to support this conclusion. c) Mechanical stratigraphy within the LES play an important role in controlling intra-salt structural styles, and their fold interference patterns can be used to understand salt deformation in great detail. These results can be applied to better investigate a spectrum of salt tectonic problems in the basins and elsewhere, such as regional and localized salt flow, sub-regional prediction of weld kinematics and local prediction of weak salt units for drilling hazard analysis.

- Abstract
The first stage of technology development as part of a Brazilian R&D project – Offshore Salt Cavern Ultra-Deep-Water Carbon Capture and Storage System – to store natural gas streams containing high concentrations of carbon dioxide is described. A conceptual design of the technology consisting of a parametric study to optimise brine flow rate, leaching time, structural stability and volume of gas with high carbon dioxide content storage, and a geo-mechanical design based on the parameters selected by the parametric investigation is presented. The simulation results indicate that, in salt caverns of ca. 275 m in height and ca. 93 m in diameter, constructed by leaching in a water depth of 2 140 m and using a brine flow rate of 640 cu m/h, storage of 1 000 000 000 standard cu m of natural gas with a high content (90%) of carbon dioxide under high pressure is feasible. - Abstract
The city of Santos synthesizes, on a local scale, the main changes that occurred in Brazil during its development process. This article relates the socio-political-economic history of São Paulo and Brazil to the constitution and expansion of the city of Santos. To do that, three different moments have been taken into consideration. The first one, which comprehends the entire colonial period until the arrival of the Portuguese royal family in Brazil, highlights the estate of São Paulo’s role for Brazil’s geographic expansion and territorial consolidation. The second instant coincides with the constitution of Brazil as a Nation, as well as with the consolidation of coffee as Brazilian main product of its exports. And finally, the third moment, takes places from the second half of the 19th century to the beginning of the1900s, when territory articulation gains strength and national integration becomes more efficiently incorporated to international capitalism. In common, these 400 years has, as a backdrop, the transition from modernity to contemporary times, characterized by the consolidation of capitalism, technique, and the industrial revolution., Peer Reviewed

- Abstract
This study presents a brief overview about the flows of international migrations located in Santos, a coastal city in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, in the transition from the 19th to the 20th century. Therefore, the study identifies the main migratory flows formed in the context of the São Paulo’ coffee economy. It was in this historical period that this city made important metamorphoses in its territorial and population composition. The systematization and examination of historiography and primary institutional sources cooperate with the production of this narrative about the multicultural composition that demarcated the urban and demographic identities of Santos since the nineteenth century., Apresenta-se um breve panorama sobre os fluxos de migrações internacionais alocados no município litorâneo de Santos, no estado de São Paulo, na transição do século 19 ao século 20.

This article examines the performance of (post)modernity and national identity in Mexico through the analysis of four different irruptions of the zombie canon in a range of media: the 1962 filmSanto vs. the Zombies, the 1990 comic stripEl Santos contra la Tetona Mendoza, the 2010 film trailer forZombies del Bicentenarioand the 2011 Zombie Walk in Mexico City. Each of these examples represents a paradigmatic shift in the construction and performance of Mexican national identity at their moment of creation. In a country where there has been a continuous and enormous effort to create a homogenous and stable national identity centred on themestizo, the zombies examined in this article fracture hegemonic definitions and offer a variety of other(ed) ways of performing being Mexican. 184. Coffee and Development of the Rio de Janeiro Economy, 1888–1920.
- Abstract
Introduction Brazil has had the world's most successful coffee economy since the middle of the nineteenth century. This chapter evaluates the impact of the coffee economy on the development process of Rio de Janeiro state. This analysis studies the effects of the expansion of coffee exports as the “staple” sector in the meaning of Watkins, Baldwin, and Hirschman linkage effects. Unlike in most other coffee countries, coffee exports in Brazil triggered a vigorous process of industrial development, first in the city and state of Rio de Janeiro then in a more pronounced fashion in the city and state of São Paulo. We are concerned with the reasons why coffee in Rio de Janeiro after the abolition of slavery in 1888 more closely resembled the development of other coffee economies than the spectacular (and unusual) income-multiplying effect it had in São Paulo. To fully understand Brazil's participation in the world coffee economy, one has to study regional and subregional diversity. Economic development could be seen as a diversification process of economic activities around an export-led productive basis; the leading products determine the dynamism of economic growth. This interpretation of export-led growth centers on the dynamism induced in the economy by incomes generated in the export sector. They stay in the capital circuit by their capacity to stimulate investments in their productive chain, both upstream and downstream, and on the income brought about by the expansion of exporting activity. 185. The Integration of the World Coffee Market.
- Abstract
Studies of coffee too often reify the international market. It is seen as an exogenous force that imposes itself on local producers who are powerless to do anything but obey its dictates. The “law of supply and demand” is seen as a structural dictator. There has been a substantial debate on the extent to which changes have been occasioned by changes in production processes (the creation of surplus) or in demand induced by changing consumption patterns or caused by commercial intermediaries. Who in the commodity chain is in control of prices, and has this changed over the centuries? A second issue, which may appear only a technical subsidiary of the first two but is in fact central, is the creation of international standards and grades. How homogeneous is the commodity and how uniform internationally are the definitions? Do people mean the same thing when they say “coffee”? This chapter analyzes the transformation of coffee from Arab monopoly to European colonial product to the sustenance of Latin American national states to, finally, a globally produced multinational commodity by asking the following questions: (1) What was the relative importance of changing patterns of demand and production in transforming the market, or, to put it another way, what were the relative roles of culture and technology in driving change? (2) What were the relative roles of private and public actors in creating the market? (3) What forces drove standardization, grading, and other market conventions? [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
In this essay vulnerability profiles were created based on residences in two districts of Santos (Embaré and Morro Nova Cintra), which are characterized as urban expansion areas in this city. Such profiles were related to the risks and hazards that climate change may result from the districts participation in the city?s socio-spatial dynamics, through analysis of the populations social, economical, and demographic characteristics. The profiles descriptions were based on the Grade of Membership (GoM) and the 2010 Demographic Census. The results show that despite differences in the recent evolution of the two districts, both populations have difficulties in mobilizing resources to confront the dangers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this paper is to analyze the various foreign policy and international insertion strategies followed by Colombia and Venezuela between 2002 and 2013, during the Uribe-Santos administrations in Bogotá and Chávez in Caracas. It is argued that these contrasting views on the international system generated different strategies for regional integration, which not only constituted an obstacle to a deepening of the bilateral relationship, but also led to its crisis. The article analyzes the foreign policy and international strategy of both countries. Finally, it is also examined the extent to which the Colombian-Venezuelan bilateral relationship was affected by this heterogeneity of strategies and policies. 9-36 bricenoruiz@unam.mx cabm@hotmail.com Semestral

This article relates the socio-political-economic history of Sao Paulo and Brazil to the constitution and expansion of the city of Santos. To do that, three different moments have been taken into consideration. The first one, which comprehends the entire colonial period until the arrival of the Portuguese royal family in Brazil, highlights the estate of Sao Paulo’s role for Brazil’s geographic expansion and territorial consolidation. In common, these 400 years has, as a backdrop, the transition from modernity to contemporary times, characterized by the consolidation of capitalism, technique, and the industrial revolution. Keywords: Santos, formation and organization of the territory, urban evolution, urbanism.Thematic clusters: 1. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) In recent decades, recognizing the harmful effects of urbanization on human health, numerous studies have been carried out in tropical and subtropical cities, mainly regarding Urban Heat Islands (UHI) and thermal comfort. In addition, advances in the field of applied urban climatology were made using the methodology developed by Stewart and Oke (2012), based on the classification of the environment in Local Climate Zones (LCZ). In this perspective, this thesis aimed to evaluate the dynamics and thermal behavior that different LCZs, conditioned by physical, social, and economic aspects, have on the formation and alteration of the microclimate in the city of Santos (São Paulo). For this, several methods and tools were adopted in order to produce relevant information about the city's climate. In this way, three main approaches were analyzed and discussed on the present thesis: the UHI seasonality in LCZs; the influence of different urban spaces on the surface and mean radiant temperature; and thermal comfort in different LCZs. The seasonal variability of the UHI was analyzed based on the collection of climatic data during summer and winter under "ideal weather conditions". The results showed two thermal behaviors distinct from the UHI in the LCZs. During the night time, maximum UHI values were observed in the compact high-rise building (HRB), while in the daytime, higher UHI magnitudes were observed in the compact low-rise (CLR2), both showing the influence of the sky view factor and vegetation in the UHI. Regarding the second approach, in order to observe the influence of urban morphologies on the mean radiant temperature and on the surface temperature, two methodologies were used: calculation of the surface temperature and simulations of the urban model. The first was obtained through the Land Surface Temperature plugin (QGIS - v2.8.9), and the second from The Solar LongWave Environmental Irrandiance Geometry model (SOLWEIG, v2019a - QGIS). In both analyzes, the contribution of vegetation and the shading of buildings were evident in the reduction of the mean radiant temperature and in the surface temperature. In the third approach, HRB and CLR2 were chosen for the analysis of thermal comfort, using the Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET), calculated through SOLWEIG. Thus, the socio-spatial distinction of LCZs formed from the valuation of spaces was evident, mainly due to the tourism market, which influences the urban infrastructure available in each area until today. These spaces were decisive for the levels of thermal comfort observed during summer and winter in the two LCZs. Thus, the results showed the critical situation of thermal stress of CLR2 citizens, especially during the summer. In such a way, the thesis advanced both in the theoretical enrichment of the urban climate of a tropical coastal city and in the question of planning, when discussing the variables that may contribute to the environmental quality of each LCZ.

The representation of the Franciscan saints in the engravings made during the 18th century in New Spain to decorate books and posters of university dissertations is to be very common. Among these saints occupy a prominent place the founder of the order, St. Francis of Assisi, and one of the most venerated, St. Anthony of Padua. There are also engravings dedicated to other less known Franciscans such as Salvador de Horta, Andrés de Conte or Jacobo della Marca, or the first saint and martyr of New Spain, Saint Philip of Jesus, whose graphic representations in the Viceroyalty were very common. The eighteenth century has to be considered the Golden Age of viceregal graphic art, thanks to the work of the some artists such Francisco Silverio, Manuel Galicia de Villavicencio or José Benito Ortuño, who skillfully carved on copper plates, although this did not mean the disappearance of the woodcut that anonymous engravers or the monogram M. Este artículo sondea la vida de San Felipe de Jesús y su proceso de beatificación de los años 1597 a 1627. This article examines the life of San Felipe de Jesús and his beatification process from 1597 to 1627. This young martyr became the first beato born in the Americas not because of support from Mexican creoles but rather thanks to the efforts of Discalced Franciscan missionaries in Asia and the king of Spain who lobbied on his behalf in the Roman Curia. This finding implies that one important symbol of Mexican identity did not originate among creoles but rather arrived as an import from Europe and Asia. Área de Historia del Arte, UPO

There are at least twenty-nine Madonna tabernacles from 1150-1350 with one or more wings preserved, most of them in Scandinavia and Spain. These tabernacles housed a sculpture of the Virgin and Child. In the open position, the central sculpture would be revealed, surrounded by scenes from the Incarnation story, depicted in relief, paint, or a combination of both. The aim of this paper is to explore these Madonna tabernacle in its closed position; What decoration and motifs are found on the exteriors? Can a closer examination of the exteriors of these works provide a greater understanding of their function and later development? And, finally, is there a difference between a closed Madonna tabernacle and a closed tabernacle that houses other saints? Most of the surviving tabernacles have wings with monochrome exteriors, often red, but also green and black or a combination of red and green. There are also examples of tabernacles with patterns or foliage. Only six tabernacles have traces of figural decoration on the exterior. Here we find St. Peter and St. Paul, sometimes together with St. John. One tabernacle has the Passion of Christ on the exterior wings. Tabernacles housing saints other than a Madonna figure have also had monochrome exteriors, often red, although several of them, at least in Scandinavia, have lost most of their original color. Only two examples have figural decorations on the exterior and they would probably have had depictions of St. Paul and St. Peter.[1] This leads us to the conclusion that in a closed position there was little that distinguished a Madonna tabernacle from tabernacles housing other saints.
