Abstract

Background For many years, long-acting intramuscular (LAI) antipsychotics have been prescribed predominantly to chronic and severe patients, as a last resort when other treatments failed. Recently, a broader and earlier use of LAIs, particularly second-generation LAIs, has been emphasized. To date, few studies attempted to frame how this change in prescribing took place in real-world practice. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the clinical features of patients prescribed with LAIs, and to explore possible prescribing differences between first- and second-generations LAIs under ordinary clinical practice in Italy. Methods The STAR Network "Depot" Study is an observational, longitudinal, multicenter study involving 35 centers in Italy. In the cross-sectional phase, patients prescribed with LAIs were consecutively recruited and assessed over a period of 12 months. Descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression analyses were employed. Results Of the 451 recruited patients, 61% were males. The level of social and working functioning was heterogeneous, as was the severity of disease. Seventy-two per cent of the patients had a diagnosis of the schizophrenia spectrum. Seventy per cent were prescribed with second-generation antipsychotic (SGA) LAIs (mostly paliperidone, aripiprazole and risperidone). Compared to first-generation antipsychotic (FGA) LAIs, patients prescribed with SGA LAIs were more often younger; employed; with a diagnosis of the schizophrenia spectrum or bipolar disorder; with higher levels of affective symptoms; with fewer LAI prescriptions in the past. Discussion LAIs' prescribing practices appear to be more flexible as compared to the past, although this change is mostly restricted to SGA LAIs.

Abstract

The origin of the tight correlations observed between the masses of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and host galaxy properties is still debated. Negative feedback from AGN can provide a viable explanation for these correlations. According to the theoretical models, the ejective feedback resulting from radiatively-efficient episodes of gas accretion onto SMBHs may be the main responsible for the rapid shut-off of star formation and black hole growth in the early stages of the evolution of present-day massive galaxies, which must have taken place at z>2. Here we present near-IR (SINFONI) and millimetre (ALMA) observations of z~2.5 luminous (Lbol>1e47 Lsun) quasars showing fast and extended ionised outflows. These AGN-driven outflows appear to be able to expel a large fraction of molecular and ionised gas and suppress star formation in the outflow region. However, the detection of Halpha emission along the edges of the outflow cone indicates on-going star formation rates of at least 50 Msun/yr, suggesting either that AGN feedback does not affect the whole galaxy or that many feedback episodes are required before star formation is completely quenched. On the other hand, the detection also lead to a positive feedback interpretation: the AGN-driven outflow compress the surrounding gas inducing star formation. Our results highlight the possible double role of galaxy-wide outflows in host galaxy evolution. This is also supported by recent observations in the local Universe indicate that massive galactic outflows may ignite star formation within the outflow itself. We also present new ALMA observations of a sample of quasars at z∼6 optimised to investigate the extended emission associated with outflows as traced by the [CII]158μm line. Although strong and powerful AGN-driven outflows are expected at these redshifts, our analysis suggests that such outflows may not be as effective as expected in removing gas out of their host galaxies.

Abstract

We report on the status of on-going, deep multi-band observations inthe field around the z=6.31 QSO SDSS J1030+0524, where an overdensityof candidate Lyman Break Galaxies at the QSO redshift was found. Theobservations include a large program with Chandra, deep JVLAobservations, and a strategic LBT program for opticalspectroscopy.Additional imaging and spectroscopic coverage isprovided, among others, by HST, VLT/MUSE, Keck and Spitzer data. The J1030 field is currently the 4th deepest X-ray survey, one of thefew radio fields observed at microJy depth, and the only deepmulti-bandsurvey in a highly biased region of the early Universe. We are collecting and organizing all multi-band data in a publicdatabase that can be effectively exploited by the AGN community. Examples of preliminary results from these data include: i) the firstspectroscopic confirmation of a few galaxies at the redshift of SDSSJ1030+0524, and ii) the discovery of a proto-cluster at z=1.7 around aCompton-thick FRII radio-galaxy.

Abstract

I will review the most important results from near-IR spectroscopic observations of WISE/SDSS selected hyper-luminous (WISSH) quasars, designed to accurately probe the role of nuclear activity in SMBH-galaxy self-regulated growth via extended outflows. The total sample consists of 90 broad-line quasars at the brightest end of theAGNluminosity function (L_bol > 1014 L_sun) and at the peak of their number density (z ~ 2.5 - 3.5). We found that WISSH quasars are typically powered by highly accreting (0.3-3 Ledd), ten billion solar masses SMBHs, demonstrating that WISSH provides a simple and valuable tool to complete the census of the extreme SMBH population in the Universe. The huge luminosity drives very powerful winds both at BLR and NLR scales. We discovered [OIII] emission lines with a broad profile, tracing ionized outflows with kinetic power up to ~4% of L_bol in ~30% of the sample.Remarkably, the remaining 70% of quasars lacks [OIII] emission but shows strong winds traced by 3,000-8,000 km/s blueshifts of the CIV broad emission line, revealing strong radiatively driven winds that dominate the BLR kinematics. Finally, I will discuss nuclear and outflows properties of WISSH quasars in terms of inclination angle and fundamentalAGNparameters such as bolometric luminosity, SMBH mass, Eddington ratio and the shape of the UV-X-ray continuum.

Abstract

Background: Children with medical complexity (CMC) have been defined (Cohen et al., Pediatrics 127: 529–538, 2011.) as an emerging population potentially eligible for PPC. The current study investigated the prevalence of children with medical complexities eligible for a local palliative care network, including a paediatric hospice. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional survey has been conducted using children clinical charts from 14 local health authorities of our region (Emilia Romagna, Italy). Results: The total number of children with life-limiting conditions was 601, with a mean age of 7.4 ± 4.8 years, a prevalence of 8.4/10.000 residents < 19 years of age and a heterogeneous presentation among the provinces in the region. Neurological diseases affect 51% of patients, followed by congenital diseases (21%) and pathologies originating in the perinatal period (6%), while only 4% of the patients had a cancer diagnosis. Patients are dependent from many devices and supports: 32% had a gastrostomy, 22% a respiratory support and 15% of patients had both of them. Conclusions: Observed regional prevalence of complex needs is lower than that published from other European countries. More research is needed to raise awareness of palliative care for children with medical complexities in order to address specific needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background For many years, long-acting intramuscular (LAI) antipsychotics have been prescribed predominantly to chronic and severe patients, as a last resort when other treatments failed. Recently, a broader and earlier use of LAIs, particularly second-generation LAIs, has been emphasized. To date, few studies attempted to frame how this change in prescribing took place in real-world practice. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the clinical features of patients prescribed with LAIs, and to explore possible prescribing differences between first- and second-generations LAIs under ordinary clinical practice in Italy. Methods The STAR Network “Depot” Study is an observational, longitudinal, multicenter study involving 35 centers in Italy. In the cross-sectional phase, patients prescribed with LAIs were consecutively recruited and assessed over a period of 12 months. Descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression analyses were employed. Results Of the 451 recruited patients, 61% were males. The level of social and working functioning was heterogeneous, as was the severity of disease. Seventy-two per cent of the patients had a diagnosis of the schizophrenia spectrum. Seventy per cent were prescribed with second-generation antipsychotic (SGA) LAIs (mostly paliperidone, aripiprazole and risperidone). Compared to first-generation antipsychotic (FGA) LAIs, patients prescribed with SGA LAIs were more often younger; employed; with a diagnosis of the schizophrenia spectrum or bipolar disorder; with higher levels of affective symptoms; with fewer LAI prescriptions in the past. Discussion LAIs' prescribing practices appear to be more flexible as compared to the past, although this change is mostly restricted to SGA LAIs.

Abstract

The reionization of the Universe is one of the most important topics of present day astrophysical research. The most plausible candidates for the reionization process are star-forming galaxies, which according to the predictions of the majority of the theoretical and semi-analytical models should dominate the HI ionizing background at z~3. We aim at measuring the Lyman continuum escape fraction, which is one of the key parameters to compute the contribution of star-forming galaxies to the UV background. We have used ultra-deep U-band imaging (U=30.2mag at 1sigma) by LBC/LBT in the CANDELS/GOODS-North field, as well as deep imaging in COSMOS and EGS fields, in order to estimate the Lyman continuum escape fraction of 69 star-forming galaxies with secure spectroscopic redshifts at 3.27L*), while for the faint population (L=0.2L*) the limit to the escape fraction is ~10%. We have computed the contribution of star-forming galaxies to the observed UV background at z~3 and we have found that it is not enough to keep the Universe ionized at these redshifts, unless their escape fraction increases significantly (>10%) at low luminosities (M1500>-19). We compare our results on the Lyman continuum escape fraction of high-z galaxies with recent estimates in the literature and discuss future prospects to shed light on the end of the Dark Ages. In the future, strong gravitational lensing will be fundamental to measure the Lyman continuum escape fraction down to faint magnitudes (M1500~-16) which are inaccessible with the present instrumentation on blank fields., We acknowledge the financial contribution from the agreement ASI-INAF I/009/10/0.

Abstract

Type 2 active galactic nuclei (AGN) represent the majority of the AGN population. However, due to the difficulties in measuring their black hole (BH) masses, it is still unknown whether they follow the same BH mass-host galaxy scaling relations valid for quiescent galaxies and type 1 AGN. Here we present the locus of type 2 AGN having virial BH mass estimates in the $M_{BH}-��_\star$ plane. Our analysis shows that the BH masses of type 2 AGN are $\sim0.9$ dex smaller than type 1 AGN at $��_\star\sim 185$ km s$^{-1}$, regardless of the (early/late) AGN host galaxy morphology. Equivalently, type 2 AGN host galaxies have stellar velocity dispersions $\sim 0.2$ dex higher than type 1 AGN hosts at $M_{BH}\sim10^7$ M$_\odot$., 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

Abstract

Background Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms -2578C/A and + 936C/T in the Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) gene have shown associations with breast cancer susceptibility and tumor characteristics in different populations with conflicting results. Aim The present study conducted the association analyses of these polymorphisms with breast cancers in Pakistani population. Subjects and methods The study comprised 336 participants with 124 breast cancer patients and 212 matched controls. After informed consent, blood samples were collected followed by DNA extraction. PCR-RFLP methods were used for the genotyping of VEGF -2578C/A in the promoter region, and + 936C/T polymorphisms in 3′- untranslated region, respectively. Statistical analyses were performed. Pearson's χ2 test, Cochran-Armitage trend test, and odds ratio analysis were carried out to evaluate and quantify the breast-cancer associated risk. The association of these polymorphisms with tumor characteristics and prognostic factors including two year-survival was also evaluated. Results The polymorphisms did not show statistically significant associations with either breast cancer risk or tumor characteristics including size, stage, grade, and two-year survival. Conclusions The pilot study presented here shows lack of association of VEGF polymorphisms with breast cancers in Pakistani population.

Abstract

We present a detailed study of ionized outflows in a large sample of ∼650 hard X-ray-detected active galactic neuclei (AGNs). Using optical spectroscopy from the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS), we are able to reveal the faint wings of the [O  iii ] emission lines associated with outflows covering, for the first time, an unexplored range of low AGN bolometric luminosity at low redshift (z ∼0.05). We test if and how the incidence and velocity of ionized outflow is related to AGN physical parameters: black hole mass (⁠|$\rm \mathit{ M}_{BH}$|⁠), gas column density (⁠|$\rm \mathit{ N}_{H}$|⁠), Eddington ratio (⁠|$\rm \lambda _{Edd}$|⁠), [O  iii ], X-ray, and bolometric luminosities. We find a higher occurrence of ionized outflows in type 1.9 (55 per cent) and type 1 AGNs (46 per cent) with respect to type 2 AGNs (24 per cent). While outflows in type 2 AGNs are evenly balanced between blue and red velocity offsets with respect to the [O  iii ] narrow component, they are almost exclusively blueshifted in type 1 and type 1.9 AGNs. We observe a significant dependence between the outflow occurrence and accretion rate, which becomes relevant at high Eddington ratios [log(⁠|$\rm \lambda _{Edd}$|⁠) ≳ −1.7]. We interpret such behaviour in the framework of covering factor-Eddington ratio dependence. We do not find strong trends of the outflow maximum velocity with AGN physical parameters, as an increase with bolometric luminosity can be only identified when including samples of AGNs at high luminosity and high redshift taken from literature. Abstract

We present a VLT/X-Shooter spectroscopy of the Lyman continuum (LyC) emitting galaxy Ion2 at z  = 3.2121 and compare it to that of the recently discovered strongly lensed LyC emitter at z  = 2.37, known as the Sunburst arc. Three main results emerge from the X-Shooter spectrum: (a) the Ly α has three distinct peaks with the central one at the systemic redshift, indicating a ionized tunnel through which both Ly α and LyC radiation escape; (b) the large O32 oxygen index ([O  iii ] λλ4959, 5007/[O  ii ] λλ3727, 3729) of |$9.18_{-1.32}^{+1.82}$| is compatible to those measured in local (z ∼0.4) LyC leakers; (c) there are narrow nebular high-ionization metal lines with σ v < 20 km s−1, which confirms the presence of young hot, massive stars. The He  ii λ1640 appears broad, consistent with a young stellar component including Wolf–Rayet stars. Similarly, the Sunburst LyC emitter shows a triple-peaked Ly α profile and from VLT/MUSE spectroscopy the presence of spectral features arising from young hot and massive stars. The strong lensing magnification, (μ > 20), suggests that this exceptional object is a gravitationally bound star cluster observed at a cosmological distance, with a stellar mass M ≲ 107 M⊙ and an effective radius smaller than 20 pc. Intriguingly, sources like Sunburst but without lensing magnification might appear as Ion2 -like galaxies, in which unresolved massive star clusters dominate the ultraviolet emission. Integrated waveguide amplifiers based on high concentration Er3+ doped BaY2F8 crystals are numerically studied by combining a full-vectorial finite element based modal analysis and propagation-rate equations. Using realistic input data, such as the absorption/emission cross sections and Er level lifetimes measured on grown crystal samples, we investigate the amplifier performance by optimizing the total Er concentration. The detailed polarized spectroscopic investigation of 4I11/2 and 4I13/2 states of Er3+ ions in Czochralski-grown NaLa(MoO4)2 single crystals doped with Er3+ and codoped with Ce3+ as a function of cerium concentration is presented. The main results of room-temperature lifetime investigation show that the 4I11/2 lifetime reduces by about 50 times from the solely Er-doped sample to the crystal codoped with 50 at. % of Ce, while in the same experimental conditions, the lifetime of the 4I13/2 level reduces by less than two times in the most heavily Ce codoped sample. Abstract

Context. The reionization of the Universe is one of the most important topics of present-day astrophysical research. The most plausible candidates for the reionization process are star-forming galaxies, which according to the predictions of the majority of the theoretical and semi-analytical models should dominate the H I ionizing background at z greater than or similar to 3. Aims. We measure the Lyman continuum escape fraction, which is one of the key parameters used to compute the contribution of star-forming galaxies to the UV background. It provides the ratio between the photons produced at lambda <= 912 angstrom rest-frame and those that are able to reach the inter-galactic medium, i.e. that are not absorbed by the neutral hydrogen or by the dust of the galaxy's inter-stellar medium. Methods. We used ultra-deep U-band imaging (U = 30.2 mag at 1 sigma) from Large Binocular Camera at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBC/LBT) in the CANDELS/GOODS-North field and deep imaging in the COSMOS and EGS fields in order to estimate the Lyman continuum escape fraction of 69 star-forming galaxies with secure spectroscopic redshifts at 3.27 <= z <= 3.40 to faint magnitude limits (L = 0.2L*, or equivalently M-1500 similar to -19). The narrow redshift range implies that the LBC U-band filter exclusively samples the lambda <= 912 angstrom rest-frame wavelengths. Results. We measured through stacks a stringent upper limit (<1.7% at 1 sigma) for the relative escape fraction of H I ionizing photons from bright galaxies (L > L*), while for the faint population (L = 0.2L*) the limit to the escape fraction is less than or similar to 10%. We computed the contribution of star-forming galaxies to the observed UV background at z similar to 3 and find that it is not sufficient to keep the Universe ionized at these redshifts unless their escape fraction increases significantly (>= 10%) at low luminosities (M-1500 >= -19). Abstract

We report on the serendipitous discovery of a z=4.0, M1500=-22.20 star-forming galaxy (Ion3) showing copious Lyman continuum (LyC) leakage (~60% escaping), a remarkable multiple peaked Lya emission, and significant Lya radiation directly emerging at the resonance frequency. This is the highest redshift confirmed LyC emitter in which the ionising and Lya radiation possibly share a common ionised cavity (with N_HI<10^17.2 cm^-2). Ion3 is spatially resolved, it shows clear stellar winds signatures like the P-Cygni NV1240 profile, and has blue ultraviolet continuum (\beta = -2.5 +/- 0.25, F_\lambda~ \lambda^\beta) with weak low-ionisation interstellar metal lines. Deep VLT/HAWKI Ks and Spitzer/IRAC 3.6um and 4.5um imaging show a clear photometric signature of the Halpha line with equivalent width of 1000A rest-frame emerging over a flat continuum (Ks-4.5um ~ 0). From the SED fitting we derive a stellar mass of 1.5x10^9 Msun, SFR of 140 Msun/yr and age of ~10 Myr, with a low dust extinction, E(B-V)< 0.1, placing the source in the starburst region of the SFR-M^* plane. Ion3 shows similar properties of another LyC emitter previously discovered (z=3.21, Ion2, Vanzella et al. 2016). Abstract

We present new ALMA observations aimed at mapping molecular gas reservoirs through the CO(3-2) transition in three quasars at $z\simeq2.4$, LBQS 0109+0213, 2QZ J002830.4-281706, and [HB89] 0329-385. Previous [OIII]5007 observations of these quasars showed evidence for ionised outflows quenching star formation in their host galaxies. Systemic CO(3-2) emission has been detected only in one quasar, LBQS 0109+0213, where the CO(3-2) emission is spatially anti-correlated with the ionised outflow, suggesting that most of the molecular gas may have been dispersed or heated in the region swept by the outflow. In all three sources, including the one detected in CO, our constraints on the molecular gas mass indicate a significantly reduced reservoir compared to main-sequence galaxies at the same redshift, supporting a negative feedback scenario. In the quasar 2QZ J002830.4-281706, we tentatively detect an emission line blob blue-shifted by $v\sim-2000$ km/s with respect to the galaxy systemic velocity and spatially offset by 0.2 arcsec (1.7 kpc) with respect to the ALMA continuum peak. Interestingly, such emission feature is coincident in both velocity and space with the ionised outflow as seen in [OIII]5007. This tentative detection must be confirmed with deeper observations but, if real, it could represent the molecular counterpart of the ionised gas outflow driven by the AGN. Finally, in all ALMA maps we detect the presence of serendipitous line emitters within a projected distance $\sim 160$ kpc from the quasars. By identifying these features with the CO(3-2) transition, the serendipitous line emitters would be located within |$\Delta v$|$<$500 km/s from the quasars, hence suggesting an overdensity of galaxies in two out of three quasars., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

Type 2 active galactic nuclei (AGN) represent the majority of the AGN population. However, due to the difficulties in measuring their black hole (BH) masses, it is still unknown whether they follow the same BH mass-host galaxy scaling relations valid for quiescent galaxies and type 1 AGN. Here we present the locus of type 2 AGN having virial BH mass estimates in the $M_{BH}-\sigma_\star$ plane. Our analysis shows that the BH masses of type 2 AGN are $\sim0.9$ dex smaller than type 1 AGN at $\sigma_\star\sim 185$ km s$^{-1}$, regardless of the (early/late) AGN host galaxy morphology. Abstract

We report the virial measurements of the BH mass of a sample of 17 type 2 AGN, drawn from the Swift/BAT 70-month 14-195 keV hard X-ray catalogue, where a faint BLR component has been measured via deep NIR (0.8-2.5 $\mu$m) spectroscopy. We compared the type 2 AGN with a control sample of 33 type 1 AGN. We find that the type 2 AGN BH masses span the 5$<$ log(M$_{BH}$ /M$_{\odot}$) $< $7.5 range, with an average log(M$_{BH}$/M$_{\odot}$) = 6.7, which is $\sim$ 0.8 dex smaller than found for type 1 AGN. If type 1 and type 2 AGN of the same X-ray luminosity log($L_{14-195}$/erg s$^{-1}$) $\sim$ 43.5 are compared, type 2 AGN have 0.5 dex smaller BH masses than type 1 AGN. Abstract

Many cosmological studies predict that early supermassive black holes (SMBHs) can only form in the most massive dark matter halos embedded within large scale structures marked by galaxy over-densities that may extend up to 10 physical Mpc. This scenario, however, has not been confirmed observationally, as the search for galaxy over-densities around high-z quasars has returned conflicting results. The field around the z=6.28 quasar SDSSJ1030+0524 (J1030) is unique for multi-band coverage and represents an excellent data legacy for studying the environment around a primordial SMBH. In this paper we present wide-area (25x25 arcmin), Y- and J-band imaging of the J1030 field obtained with the near infrared camera WIRCam at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). We built source catalogues in the Y- and J-band, and matched those with our photometric catalogue in the r, z, i bands presented in Morselli et al. (2014). We used these new infrared data together with H and K and Spitzer/IRAC data to refine our selection of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs), extending our selection criteria to galaxies in the range 25.2=1.3. We found a significant asymmetry in the distribution of the high-z galaxies in J1030, supporting the existence of a coherent large-scale structure around the quasar. We compared our results with those of Bowler et al. (2015), who adopted similar LBGs selection criteria, and estimated an over-density of galaxies in the field of delta = 2.4, which is significant at >4 sigma. The over-density value and its significance are higher than those found in Morselli et al. Abstract

The reionization of the Universe is one of the most important topics of present day astrophysical research. The most plausible candidates for the reionization process are star-forming galaxies, which according to the predictions of the majority of the theoretical and semi-analytical models should dominate the HI ionizing background at z~3. We aim at measuring the Lyman continuum escape fraction, which is one of the key parameters to compute the contribution of star-forming galaxies to the UV background. We have used ultra-deep U-band imaging (U=30.2mag at 1sigma) by LBC/LBT in the CANDELS/GOODS-North field, as well as deep imaging in COSMOS and EGS fields, in order to estimate the Lyman continuum escape fraction of 69 star-forming galaxies with secure spectroscopic redshifts at 3.27L*), while for the faint population (L=0.2L*) the limit to the escape fraction is ~10%. We have computed the contribution of star-forming galaxies to the observed UV background at z~3 and we have found that it is not enough to keep the Universe ionized at these redshifts, unless their escape fraction increases significantly (>10%) at low luminosities (M1500>-19). We compare our results on the Lyman continuum escape fraction of high-z galaxies with recent estimates in the literature and discuss future prospects to shed light on the end of the Dark Ages. In the future, strong gravitational lensing will be fundamental to measure the Lyman continuum escape fraction down to faint magnitudes (M1500~-16) which are inaccessible with the present instrumentation on blank fields., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 16 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

In recent years, with the goal of understanding the large scale structure around high-z QSO, we have obtained deep r,i,z, band imaging at Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) and Y and J band at CFHT Telescope of the field around the quasar SDSSJ1030+0524 (z=6.3). I present here some results, in particular the photometric catalogue of the sources, the selection process of Lyman break galaxies in the QSO halo and the main properties of these galaxies.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Although previous studies have suggested the potential advantages of albumin administration in patients with severe sepsis, its efficacy has not been fully established. METHODS: In this multicenter, open-label trial, we randomly assigned 1818 patients with severe sepsis, in 100 intensive care units (ICUs), to receive either 20% albumin and crystalloid solution or crystalloid solution alone. In the albumin group, the target serum albumin concentration was 30 g per liter or more until discharge from the ICU or 28 days after randomization. The primary outcome was death from any cause at 28 days. Secondary outcomes were death from any cause at 90 days, the number of patients with organ dysfunction and the degree of dysfunction, and length of stay in the ICU and the hospital. Abstract

A full-vectorial finite element based modal analysis and propagation-rate equations are used to study the integrated waveguide amplifiers based on high concentration [Er.sup.3+] doped Ba[Y.sub.2][F.sub.8] crystals. The numerical results have predicted optimum gain coefficient up to 5 dB/cm and broad amplification bandwidth exceeding 80 nm with 1480 nm pumping.

Abstract

A detailed spectroscopic investigation on the effect of Ce codoping on the efficiency of the population of 4/(13/2) of erbium is performed. The result showed that the Ce presence triggers some cross-relaxation mechanism from the upper lying manifolds and strongly helps the population inversion efficiency for the 1.5-mu(m) emission, without greatly effecting the 4/(13/2) level erbium.
