Life-threatening hemorrhage following maxillofacial injury (MFI) is rare but can be fatal. Conventional measures for hemostasis including nasal packing, balloon tamponade, and surgical ligation of bleeding points may not be effective or efficient in patients at risk of hypovolemic shock. Advantages of transarterial embolization (TAE) include rapid identification of the bleeding focus and its access, direct obstruction of the culprit vessels, ability to control multiple bleeding sites, and no requirement of general anesthesia. The internal maxillary artery is the most frequently targeted vessel for embolization. Several studies have demonstrated that TAE was technically successful at rates between 79.4% and 100% and was associated with good clinical outcomes. However, major complications such as tongue necrosis or facial nerve palsy have rarely been reported (0%-7%), probably because of rich collaterals in the maxillofacial region, and failure to diagnose complications in patients who are severely disabled or died. Traditionally, Gelfoam and coils have been widely used as embolic materials. Polyvinyl alcohol particles and n-butyl-cyanoacrylate are also favored, and newer embolic materials, such as Onyx or precipitating hydrophobic injectable liquid, are available for use. Operators should be familiar with the distinctive characteristics of each embolic material. Early treatment with TAE for intractable hemorrhage may improve outcomes in patients with MFI, and further studies are necessary to develop a treatment algorithm to define when to initiate TAE in cases of severe oronasal hemorrhage following MFI.

본 연구는 산림운동이 뇌파에 미치는 영향에 대하여 알아보고자 성인 남성 14명을 대상으로 3일간 운동을 실시하였고, 뇌파를 측정하였다. 운동 프로그램 전ㆍ후에 뇌파를 측정하였다. 산림운동을 통하여 수집된 자료를 각 변인별 측정치의 실수, 백분율 그리고 평균과 표준편차를 구하였으며, 각 변인별 운동 전ㆍ후에 따른 뇌파에 대하여 paired T-test를 실시하여 분석한 결과, 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 산림에서의 운동을 통하여 알파파와 베타파는 증가하였다. 본 실험을 통하여 산림 운동은 뇌 건강을 개선시켜줌으로써, 건강한 삶을 영위할 수 있을 것으로 생각된다.

The characteristics of a flexible write-once-read-many-times (WORM) memory fabricated with monolayered 0-dimensional (0D) CdSe–ZnS quantum dots (QDs) layers sandwiched between two insulating 2-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) multilayers were investigated by electrical measurement method. The hBN/QDs monolayer/hBN structure was fabricated in a vertical stacked structure using a technique which control the formation of the QDs monolayer. QDs monolayer was formed by electrostatic interaction between the negative charge group on the CdSe–ZnS QDs surface and the positive charge group on the hBN surface. The device has a WORM characteristic due to the presence of QDs in the current-voltage (I–V) measurement. When a bias is applied, carriers were initially trapped by tunneling due to the QDs and then a conductive filament was formed in the hBN, which were not detrapped and exhibit characteristics of write-once-read-many-times memory. The maximum ON/OFF ratio of the current for the devices was as large as 4 × 10, and the endurance was 5 × 104 cycles, and a retention time was larger than 1 × 105 s. In order to explain the carrier transport mechanism and conductive filament of the WORM memory device caused by QDs, it through various methods such as I–V fitting data, simulation, and conductive AFM. Unlike the conventional conductive filament mechanism, through random diffusion such as Ag filament, the Au/hBN/QD/hBN/ITO/PET structures implemented a consistent conductive filament using Au metal and QDs active layer.

The effects of antioxidants on lifespan have been widely studied. Our previous study showed supplementation with N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC) extends the lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans. Here we aimed to determine the lifespan-extending mechanism involved with NAC and the effect of NAC on Alzheimer’s disease (AD). NAC further increased the lifespan of age-1 and clk-1 mutants, which have increased lifespan owing to reduced insulin/IGF-1-like signaling and mitochondrial function, respectively. There was no additional lifespan extension in eat-2 background, a genetic model of dietary restriction (DR), by NAC. Gene knockdown experiments revealed that the effect of NAC is not dependent on SKN-1, a protein-sensing DR status, whereas DAF-16, a transcription factor regulating stress-responsive genes, is required for lifespan extension by NAC. NAC delayed paralysis caused by amyloid beta. Our results show that NAC mimics the effect of DR on lifespan, possibly through the induction of DAF-16 nuclear localization and may retard the incidence of AD.

Triptolide is a major active compound found in Tripterygium wilfordii., also known as Thunder God Vine. Triptolide has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities. In this study, we examined the effect of dietary supplementation with triptolide on response to environmental stressors and lifespan in vivo using Caenorhabditis elegans as a model system. Treatment with 50 mg/L of triptolide in the growth media increased resistance to oxidative stress and reduced the generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species. We also observed a lifespan-extending activity for triptolide. Both mean and maximum lifespans were significantly increased by supplementation with triptolide. Response to other environmental stressors was modulated by triptolide. The survival after heat shock or UV irradiation was markedly increased in worms treated with triptolide. Unlike many lifespan-extending genetic or nutritional interventions, the longevity phenotype conferred by triptolide did not have the trade-off of a reduction in fertility or a delay in the gravid period. The expressions of hsp-16.2 and sod-3, known to positively correlate with a long lifespan, were significantly upregulated by supplementation with triptolide. These findings suggest that triptolide can exhibit antistress and lifespan-extending effects in vivo, possibly through its antioxidant activity and support the free radical theory of aging, which emphasizes the causative role of oxidative stress in aging.

Dietary restriction has been shown to have a lifespan-extending effect in various model organisms, from yeast to mice. The nematode C. elegans is widely used as a model organism for researches on dietary restriction due to various dietary restriction methods developed in C. elegans. Previous study showed that coelomocyte-specific cup-4 and cup-5 genes are necessary for dietary-restriction-induced longevity in C. elegans. We examined the effect of coelomocyte knockout on lifespan extension by different methods of dietary restriction. The extension of both mean and maximum lifespan by bacterial dilution was completely abolished by genetic ablation of coelomocytes. Knockout of coelomocytes also blocked the lifespan extension conferred by food deprivation or removal of peptone in culture media. These findings indicate that coelomocytes are required for lifespan extension by different methods of dietary restriction, and suggest that the activation of coelomocytes may be a common underlying mechanism involved in dietary-restriction-induced longevity in C. elegans.

Objectives Although stent-salvage technique has been well-known to rescue the situation of coil protrusion into the parent artery aggravating to make thromboembolism, the smallest profiled Neuroform Atlas stent can be expected to handle those situations easily compared to previously used intracranial stents. Thus, the purpose of this study was to report our series of stent salvage using the Neuroform Atlas stent for procedure-related complications during coil embolization of intracranial aneurysms. Patients and methods In March 2018, the Neuroform Atlas was approved for use in our country. Since then, we have treated 541 aneurysms in 502 patients with coil embolization. There were 15 consecutive cases (14 unruptured and 1 ruptured) with procedure-related complications, such as coil protrusion or parent artery thrombosis, rescued by the Neuroform Atlas stent. Follow-up angiography was performed in 14 of the 15 patients between 6–12 months (mean 8.2 months) after the procedure, and clinical follow-up was performed from 2 to 18 months (mean 11.2 months) after the procedure. Results Procedure-related complications included parent artery thrombosis due to coil herniation (n = 5) and coil protrusion floating in the parent artery (n = 10). There was no complication related to delivery or deploy of Neuroform Atlas stents. In 12 (80.0 %) of the 15 cases, the stent was deployed via the same microcatheter for coil delivery. In 3 cases of wide neck aneurysms, the stent was deployed via another microcatheter per the scheduled stent-assisted or double microcatheter techniques. Initial angiographic results showed 11 (73.3 %, 11/15) cases of complete occlusion, and 12 (85.7 %, 12/14) cases achieved complete occlusion in follow-up angiographies. Conclusions Facing with procedure-related complications during coil embolization of intracranial aneurysms, the smallest profiled Neuroform Atlas stent might be a time-saving and feasible option for the salvage technique by using the same microcatheter to deliver coils.

Oral propranolol has become first-line treatment for infantile hemangiomas (IHs). This study focused on identifying cytokines related to the biology of IH and early regression indicators of IH after propranolol treatment.For inclusion, the patients had to be aged less than 1 year and have an IH with a largest diameter ≥2 cm. Patients were scheduled to receive 1 year of propranolol treatment. Serum cytokines involved in angiogenesis, vasculogenesis, and/or chronic inflammation were analyzed at 0, 1, and/or 12 months after treatment using Multiplex Luminex assays.Among the 49 evaluable patients, 33 completed the 1-year treatment: 16 showed excellent response and 12 had good response to propranolol. Significant decreases in serum MMP-2, bFGF, VEGF-α, and MCP-1 levels were observed after 1 year of treatment compared to pretreatment values. The maximal diameters of the lesions significantly correlated with pretreatment serum VEGF-α, bFGF, and MMP-9. Patients with higher bFGF and VEGF levels showed better response to propranolol at 1 year.MMP-2, VEGF-α, bFGF, and MCP-1 may involve in the biology of IH and their downregulation may be associated with involution processes of IH. Pretreatment bFGF and VEGF could be novel biomarkers for predicting response to propranolol.We found that decreases in the concentrations of MMP-2, bFGF, VEGF, and MCP-1 were associated with regression of the hemangioma, which indicates that one of the mechanisms of propranolol in the treatment of proliferative hemangiomas may involve downregulation of those cytokines. Patients with higher bFGF and VEGF levels showed better response to propranolol at 1 year. Importantly, serum bFGF higher than 37.07 pg/mL may predict an excellent response to propranolol. Therefore, along with the patient's age and the size and visual characteristics of the lesion, bFGF levels could help determine the viability of propranolol use in the treatment of IHs. Our study represented extensive serum profiling in IH, reporting the indicators and molecules clearly related to IH regression with propranolol treatment. The authors believe that monitoring serum cytokines, including MMP-2, bFGF, VEGF, and MCP-1, in IH patients could be important, in addition to clinical follow-up, for determining when to start and end propranolol treatment.

Polymorphs of organic semiconductors are of great interest as they shed light to structure-property relationships. The full X-ray thin film structure analysis of two polymorphs (B, G) of an important n-type semiconducting dicyano-distyrylbenzene based small molecule (CN-TFPA) is reported. Drastically different structures of the monotropic phases are revealed, that is an uncommon 2D crossed π-stacked arrangement for the B-phase versus a 1D slipped π-stack for G. Both phases exhibit a layered structure in the (100) plane with high structural integrity, driven by the hydrophobic contacts of the terminal CF3 groups; as (100) coincides with the film surface, this allows for exfoliation by scotch tape. An in-depth time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) based quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) study reveals all subsequent significantly differing optical and electronic responses which result from the different arrangements: the B film shows little excitonic interaction with strong blue fluorescence, amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), and good 2D n-type transport. The G film forms H-aggregates with strong green fluorescence, no ASE, and 1D n-type charge transport. The established structure-property relationships are seen as a crucial step for computer-aided device analysis.

Infections caused by parasitic flatworms impose a considerable worldwide health burden. One of the most impactful is schistosomiasis, a disease caused by parasitic blood flukes. Treatment of schistosomiasis has relied on a single drug – praziquantel (PZQ) – for decades. The utility of PZQ as an essential medication is, however, intertwined with a stark gap in our knowledge as to how this drug works. No flatworm target has been identified that readily explains how PZQ paralyzes and damages schistosomes. Recently, a schistosome ion channel was discovered that is activated by PZQ and displays characteristics which mirror key features of PZQ action on schistosomes. Here, the journey to discovery of this target, properties of this ion channel, and remaining questions are reviewed.

Phosphatidylserine is one of the phospholipids present in cell membranes, especially in brain and nervous system. The phosphatidylserine content is reduced with aging and age-related decrease in phosphatidylserine is known to contribute to cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease in the elderly. In the present study, we examined the effect of supplementation with phosphatidylserine on the response to oxidative stress and aging using C. elegans as a model system. Dietary supplementation with phosphatidylserine significantly increased resistance to oxidative stress and extended lifespan accompanying reduced fertility as a trade-off. Age-related decline in motility was also delayed by supplementation with phosphatidylserine. The cellular levels of reactive oxygen species and the expression of stress-responsive genes were increased by phosphatidylserine treatment, suggesting a hormetic effect. The extension of lifespan by phosphatidylserine overlaps with reduced insulin/IGF-1-like signaling and requires DAF-16. The effect of phosphatidylserine on age-related diseases was examined using animal model of disease. Supplementation with phosphatidylserine significantly suppressed amyloid beta-induced toxicity in Alzheimer's disease model. Reduced survival in diabetes mellitus due to high-glucose diet was reversed by supplementation with phosphatidylserine. This study reports the anti-oxidative stress and anti-aging effect of phosphatidylserine for the first time at the organismal level and proposes possible underlying mechanisms.

Curcumin, a compound found in Indian yellow curry, is known to possess various biological activities, including anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer activities. Cur2004-8 is a synthetic curcumin derivative having symmetrical bis-alkynyl pyridines that shows a strong anti-angiogenic activity. In the present study, we examined the effect of dietary supplementation with Cur2004-8 on response to environmental stresses and aging using Caenorhabditis elegans as a model system. Dietary intervention with Cur2004-8 significantly increased resistance of C. elegans to oxidative stress. Its anti-oxidative-stress effect was greater than curcumin. However, response of C. elegans to heat stress or ultraviolet irradiation was not significantly affected by Cur2004-8. Next, we examined the effect of Cur2004-8 on aging. Cur2004-8 significantly extended both mean and maximum lifespan, accompanying a shift in time-course distribution of progeny production. Age-related decline in motility was also delayed by supplementation with Cur2004-8. In addition, Cur2004-8 prevented amyloid-beta-induced toxicity in Alzheimer's disease model animals which required a forkhead box (FOXO) transcription factor DAF-16. Dietary supplementation with Cur2004-8 also reversed the increase of mortality observed in worms treated with high-glucose-diet. These results suggest that Cur2004-8 has higher anti-oxidant and anti-aging activities than curcumin. It can be used for the development of novel anti-aging product.

The anthelmintic drug praziquantel (PZQ) is used to treat schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease that affects over 200 million people worldwide. PZQ causes Ca2+ influx and spastic paralysis of adult worms and rapid vacuolization of the worm surface. However, the mechanism of action of PZQ remains unknown even after 40 years of clinical use. Here, we demonstrate that PZQ activates a schistosome transient receptor potential (TRP) channel, christened Sm.TRPMPZQ, present in parasitic schistosomes and other PZQ-sensitive parasites. Several properties of Sm.TRPMPZQ were consistent with known effects of PZQ on schistosomes, including (i) nanomolar sensitivity to PZQ; (ii) stereoselectivity toward (R)-PZQ; (iii) mediation of sustained Ca2+ signals in response to PZQ; and (iv) a pharmacological profile that mirrors the well-known effects of PZQ on muscle contraction and tegumental disruption. We anticipate that these findings will spur development of novel therapeutic interventions to manage schistosome infections and broader interest in PZQ, which is finally unmasked as a potent flatworm TRP channel activator.

Background Current diagnostic tests for hereditary spherocytosis (HS) focus on the detection of hemolysis or indirectly assessing defects of membrane protein, whereas direct methods to detect protein defects are complicated and difficult to implement. In the present study, we investigated the patterns of genetic variation associated with HS among patients clinically diagnosed with HS. Methods Multi-gene targeted sequencing of 43 genes (17 RBC membrane protein-encoding genes, 20 RBC enzyme-encoding genes, and six additional genes for the differential diagnosis) was performed using the Illumina HiSeq platform. Results Among 59 patients with HS, 50 (84.7%) had one or more significant variants in a RBC membrane protein-encoding genes. A total of 54 significant variants including 46 novel mutations were detected in six RBC membrane protein-encoding genes, with the highest number of variants found in SPTB (n = 28), and followed by ANK1 (n = 19), SLC4A1 (n = 3), SPTA1 (n = 2), EPB41 (n = 1), and EPB42 (n = 1). Concurrent mutations of genes encoding RBC enzymes (ALDOB, GAPDH, and GSR) were detected in three patients. UGT1A1 mutations were present in 24 patients (40.7%). Positive rate of osmotic fragility test was 86.8% among patients harboring HS-related gene mutations. Conclusions This constitutes the first large-scaled genetic study of Korean patients with HS. We demonstrated that multi-gene target sequencing is sensitive and feasible that can be used as a powerful tool for diagnosing HS. Considering the discrepancies of clinical and molecular diagnoses of HS, our findings suggest that molecular genetic analysis is required for accurate diagnosis of HS. The insulin/insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 signaling (IIS) pathway is a conserved lifespan-modulating genetic pathway. Many genes involved in lifespan extension associated with decreased signaling of the IIS pathway have been identified. In the present study, we found a novel gene required for the effect of the IIS pathway on the stress response and aging in C. elegans . Receptor mediated endocytosis (RME)-1 is expressed ubiquitously and known to be involved in cellular endocytic transport. Knockdown of rme-1 abolished the lifespan-extending effect caused by decreased IIS. In addition, resistance to oxidative stress, heat shock and ultraviolet irradiation were significantly decreased when the expression of rme-1 was blocked. The delayed age-related decline in motility observed in age-1 mutants with defects in the IIS pathway was also modulated by RME-1. The expression of sod-3 , which is positively correlated with the remaining lifespan of an individual, was decreased by rme-1 knockdown. Our study demonstrates that RME-1 is required for the anti-aging effect associated with decreased IIS. This study aims to show the problems of Korean and Chinese SMEs business performance and suggest ways for improvement by presenting actual conditions of Korean and Chinese SMEs business performance using the Importance Performance Analysis. SMEs business performance has becomes deeply related to globalization, As external markets continue to open, it is important to strengthen firm competitiveness. Therefore, it is necessary for the industry to find strategies to invigorate the industry and strengthen international competitiveness. Especially for Korean and Chinese SMEs, providing more efficient business performance than other countries is necessary in order to improve international competitiveness. This study investigates nine variables developed by Hermann Simon[1]. The nine variables are ambitious goals, specialization, globalization, close customer, relations, continuous innovation, competitive advantage, trust my own ability, motivated employee, and strong leadership. This paper identified the current status and problems of SMEs in Korea and China and suggested improvement points to achieve competitiveness of SMEs in both countries and provided opportunities to investors of both countries to understand SME entrepreneurship by comparing the current status and problems of Korea and China’s SME business operations. Previous studies that used IPA analysis were limited to service quality, while this study suggested the concerns of business operations in terms of entrepreneurship. This study also identified the management philosophy of Korean and Chinese small and middle business entrepreneurs and provides basic information to inspire a new business mindset by comparing internal and external business environments of both countries.

Background and Purpose— No evidence is available on the benefits of preventive suboccipital decompressive craniectomy (SDC) for patients with cerebellar infarction. The purpose of this matched case–control study was to investigate whether preventive SDC was associated with good clinical outcomes in patients with cerebellar infarction and to evaluate its predisposing factors. Methods— Between March 2007 and September 2015, 28 patients underwent preventive SDC. We performed propensity score matching to establish a proper control group among 721 patients with cerebellar infarction during the same period. Group A (n=28) consists of those who underwent preventive SDC, and group B (n=56) consists of those who did not undergo preventive SDC. We analyzed and compared clinical outcomes between groups. Results— Clinical outcomes were better in group A than in group B at discharge ( P =0.048) and 12-month follow-up ( P =0.030). Group B had more deaths within 12 months than group A (log-rank, P P =0.009) and the absence of brain stem infarction (odds ratio, 2.862; P =0.033) were independently associated with favorable outcomes (modified Rankin Scale score of 0–2) at 12-month follow-up. Conclusions— Favorable clinical outcomes including overall survival can be expected after preventive SDC in patients with a volume ratio between 0.25 and 0.33 and the absence of brain stem infarction. Among these patients, preventive SDC might be better than the best medical treatment alone.

It is suggested that oxidative stress induced by cellular reactive oxygen species is one of the major causal factors of aging. The effect of dietary supplementation of anti-oxidants on response to environmental stressors and lifespan has been studied in various model organisms. In the present study, we examine the effect of Artemisia annua extract on resistance to oxidative, heat, and ultraviolet stresses in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Artemisia annua significantly increases survival under oxidative and heat stresses, however has no effects in response to ultraviolet stress. Then, we measured the in vivo changes in expression of stress-responsive genes by Artemisia annua using green fluorescence protein. The expression of hsp-16.2, known to be involved in response to heat stress, is significantly increased by Artemisia annua supplementation. An anti-oxidant gene, sod-3, was also up-regulated by Artemisia annua. However, both mean and maximum lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans was not altered by dietary supplementation of Artemisia annua. These findings indicate that Artemisia annua confers health-promoting effects through increasing the resistance to environmental stressors and has no effect on lifespan in C. elegans. Our study suggests that Artemisia annua can be used for the development of novel natural therapeutics for diseases caused by environmental stressors.

We present a developed highly balanced and thermally stable ambipolar semiconducting polymer PBCDC consisting of diketopyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole and benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene building blocks connected by a cyanovinylene linker unit. Stabilization of the frontier molecular orbitals and delocalization of the LUMO on the whole structural unit were realized by introducing the strong electron-withdrawing cyanovinylene linker. In addition to such electronic effects, the molecular stacking and crystallinity of the polymer film were significantly controlled by the presence of the cyanovinylene linker, which was preserved with no variation at different annealing temperatures. As a result of these electronic and structural effects of cyanovinylene, organic field-effect transistors based on the PBCDC exhibit highly balanced hole and electron mobilities of μh,max ∼ 0.2 cm2 V–1 s–1 and μe,max ∼ 0.2 cm2 V–1 s–1, respectively, which are virtually independent of the annealing temperature over the range of 80–250 °C.

A series of indolo[3,2-b]indole (IDID) derivatives comprising the core unit of N,N-dihexyl-IDID with different aromatic and aliphatic substituents at 2- and 7-position are designed and synthesized to construct high-performance organic semiconductors by different processing routes. Structure-property relationship of the derivatives is comprehensively studied in terms of their photophysical, electrochemical, structural, and electrical characteristics. IDID derivatives are either evaporated in vacuum or dissolved in common organic solvents to ensure applicalbility in different processing routes toward outstanding p-type semiconductor films. Among others, the excellently soluble compound 4H4TIDID (with 2- and 7-substituents of 5-hexyl-2,2′-bithiophene moiety, solubility >20 wt% in chloroform), shows the highest field-effect hole mobility of 0.97 cm2 V−1 s−1 in a device constructed by vacuum-deposition and 0.18 cm2 V−1 s−1 in device cosntructed by spin-coating, respectively. The 2D grazing incidence X-ray diffraction of 4H4TIDID films in both devices identically show the 2D molecular orientation favorable for the high transistor mobility.

For the purposes of virtual surgery, medical education, medical communication, and realistic surface models of anatomic structures are required. In the most involved method, surface models can be made using segmentation and three-dimensional reconstruction procedures. Such models, however, are computationally expensive, and can be difficult to use. Therefore, optimization is often performed manually, but this is a time-consuming job that requires considerable artistic talent. In this article, the authors describe a method that uses Maya and ZBrush to construct optimized surface models of anatomic structures. The authors take 235 anatomic images generated from a cadaver, and perform segmentation and surface reconstruction using Photoshop and Mimics. Reconstructed surface models of the cerebral cortex are then optimized and divided by a morphing technique in Maya and ZBrush for use in medical applications. The optimized surface models do not require significant storage space, and are easily manufactured and modified. The resulting surface models can be displayed off-line and on-line in real time, as well as on smart phones. Using commercial software with the specialized functions described in this study, it is expected that the efficiencies produced by the proposed method will enable researchers to conveniently create surface models from serially sectioned images such as computed tomographs and magnetic resonance images. The surface models created in this research will also have widespread applications in both medical education and communication.

Alzheimer’s disease is an age-related neurodegenerative disease. Extracellular aggregation of amyloid beta is a well-known hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and believed to be critical for the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Lots of efforts have been put on finding an intervention alleviating amyloid beta toxicity. Electrolyzed-reduced water is generated near cathode by electrolysis of water and shown to have strong anti-oxidant and lifespan-extending activities in C. elegans. Here, we examined the effect of electrolyzed-reduced water on amyloid beta toxicity and investigated underlying cellular mechanism involved. Worms grown in media prepared with electrolyzedreduced water showed delayed amyloid beta-induced paralysis and age-related decline in motility. DAF-16, a FOXO transcription factor modulating insulin/IGF-1-like signal, is required for the protection against amyloid beta toxicity. These findings indicate that electrolyzed-reduced water can prevent amyloid beta toxicity via DAF-16 and suggest that electrolyzedreduced water could be utilized for the development of therapeutic intervention to Alzheimer’s disease.

In this study, slow crack growth (SCG) resistances of defective and normal high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes were measured using the stiff-constant K (SCK) specimen, where the stress intensity factor (SIF) was maintained at a constant value within a certain crack length range. A significantly reduced SCG resistance was observed in the defective pipe; a detailed procedure for evaluating SCG kinetics using the SCK specimen has been provided herein. The results of a fracture surface analysis indicate that the white window patterns, resulting from poor carbon black dispersion, are the main reason for poor SCG performance. In addition, a crack layer (CL) model was derived for the SCK specimen geometry and was compared with experimental results. It was observed that the crack and process zone growth resistance parameters were significantly lower in the case of the defected pipe than those in the case of the normal pipe.

Phosphatidylcholine is one of the major phospholipids comprising cellular membrane and is known to have several health-promoting activities, including the improvement of brain function and liver repair. In this paper, we examine the in vivo effect of dietary supplementation with phosphatidylcholine on the response to environmental stressors and aging in C. elegans. Treatment with phosphatidylcholine significantly increased the survival of worms under oxidative stress conditions. However, there was no significant difference in response to stresses caused by heat shock or ultraviolet irradiation. Oxidative stress is believed to be one of the major causal factors of aging. Then, we examined the effect of phosphatidylcholine on lifespan and age-related physiological changes. Phosphatidylcholine showed a lifespan-extending effect and a reduction in fertility, possibly as a tradeoff for long lifespan. Age-related decline of motility was also significantly delayed by supplementation with phosphatidylcholine. Interestingly, the expressions of well-known longevity-assuring genes, hsp-16.2 and sod-3, were significantly upregulated by dietary intervention with phosphatidylcholine. DAF-16, a transcription factor modulating stress response genes, was accumulated in the nucleus by phosphatidylcholine treatment. Increase of the ROS level with phosphatidylcholine suggests that the antioxidant and lifespan-extending effects are due to the hormetic effect of phosphatidylcholine. Phosphatidylcholine also showed a protective effect against amyloid beta-induced toxicity in Alzheimer's disease model animals. Experiments with long-lived mutants revealed that the lifespan-extending effect of phosphatidylcholine specifically overlapped with that of reduced insulin/IGF-1-like signaling and required DAF-16. These findings showed the antioxidant and antiaging activities of phosphatidylcholine for the first time in vivo. Further studies focusing on the identification of underlying cellular mechanisms involved in the antiaging effect will increase the possibility of using phosphatidylcholine for the development of antiaging therapeutics.

Background: We investigated the neuroprotective properties of single doses of minocycline and ozagrel when administered prior to stroke. Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned randomly to one of the following groups: (1) control (Con) group (n=10), (2) minocycline (Mino) group (n=10), (3) sodium ozagrel (SO) group (n=10). Rats were treated with a single dose of minocycline or ozagrel at 30 minutes before stroke. A middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) was made at 30 minutes after drug administration and reperfusion was done. The rats were subjected to a neurobehavioral test at days 1, 3 and 7 after MCAO. The cerebral ischemic volume was quantified by MetaMorph imaging software after TTC staining. The neuronal cell survival and astrocytes expansion were assessed by the NeuN and GFAP immunohistofluorescence staining. Apoptosis was detected by the TUNEL assay. We statistically analyzed and compared the results with each other. Results: Mino and SO groups had neuroprotective effect and showed a better behavioral performance of adhesive removal and treadmill test at 7 days after stroke. Mino and SO groups also showed a smaller infarct volume than control group at 7 days after stroke. Immunohistofluorescence staining showed a higher number of NeuN positive cells, lower activated astrocytes in GFAP and a lower apoptosis in TUNEL staining. Conclusion: This study showed that single doses of minocycline and ozagrel prior to stroke had neuroprotective effects. These agents will be useful not only in post-stroke therapy but also in stroke prevention in several cerebrovascular procedures like carotid endarterectomy, bypass procedure, endovascular angioplasty, thromboembolectomy or thrombolysis

We aimed to evaluate treatment outcomes of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) subgroups by risk-stratification, in the Yeungnam region of Korea.We reviewed the courses of 409 newly diagnosed ALL patients from January 2004 to December 2013 in the Yeungnam region.All patients were classified into three risk groups: standard risk (SR, n=212), high risk (HR, n=153) and very high risk (VHR, n=44). The mean follow-up time was 73.6 ± 39.4 months. The 7-year event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) rates were 78.7 ± 2.1% and 86.8 ± 1.8%, respectively. Significant 7-year EFS and OS rates for SR (84.0 ± 2.7%, 93.7 ± 1.8%), HR (76.5 ± 3.5%, 82.1 ± 3.3%), and VHR (60.6 ± 7.5%, 69.9 ± 7.5%) were observed (P0.001), respectively. Relapse occurred in 52 patients, and the cumulative 7-year incidence of relapse differed according to risk groups (SR vs. HR vs. VHR=12.6% vs. 14.0% vs. 29.6%, P=0.003).For the 46 relapsed patients who were treated, the 3-year EFS and OS were 42.3 ± 8.3%and 46.4± 8.4%. Among the 44 VHR patients, EFS was not significantly different between the chemotherapy-treated patients and those received hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (P=0.533). The 7-year EFS of the hyperleukocytosis subgroup (24 cases, 14 under 10 years of age)showed a tendency for better prognosis than that of the other VHR subgroups (P=0.178).Our results revealed improved outcomes in pediatric ALL patients with risk-stratified therapy. The hyperleukocytosis subgroup without any combined chromosomal abnormalities may respond favorably to chemotherapy alone after first complete remission.

Consumers often try to visually identify a previously encountered product among a sequence of similar items, guided only by their memory and a few general search terms. What determines their success at correctly identifying the target product in such “product lineups”? The current research finds that the longer consumers search sequentially, the more conservative and—ironically—inaccurate judges they become. Consequently, the more consumers search, the more likely they are to erroneously reject the correct target when it finally appears in the lineup. This happens because each time consumers evaluate a similar item in the lineup, and determine that it is not the option for which they have been looking, they draw an implicit inference that the correct target should feel more familiar than the similar items rejected up to that point. This causes the subjective feeling of familiarity consumers expect to experience with the true target to progressively escalate, making them more conservative but also less accurate judges. The findings have practical implications for consumers and marketers, and make theoretical contributions to research on inference-making, online search, and product recognition.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the bioactive substances and extraction conditions of lipid-soluble green tee extract using supercritical CO extraction from green tea leaves growing in Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do and to demonstrate cell safety and effects on inflammatory response of the nano-encapsulated lipid-soluble green tee extract. The polyphenol content of green tea extract using supercritical CO₂ extraction was analyzed. The highest polyphenol was extracted in the condition of 400 bar/50 °C. A total of polyphenol content was 2.47 mg/g. The lipid-soluble vitamin content of supercritical extracts of lipid-soluble green tea was analyzed. Beta-carotene, a vitamin A precursor (4.131 mg/100 g) and vitamin E (537.9 mg/100 g) were detected. ECG content was the highest of catechin of lipid-soluble green tea extract. For cell safety and NO inhibition, human skin cell-derived HaCaT cells and RBL-2H3 mast cells did not have cytotoxicity in 1% of the nano-encapsulated lipid-soluble green tea leaf extract. RAW 264.7 cells did not show cytotoxicity in 5%. NO production was significantly decreased in RAW 264.7 cells in a concentration-dependent manner and within the concentration range. Based on the findings, this study suggested the extraction standards and ingredients of polyphenol according to temperature and pressure in extracting green tea leaf ingredients using supercritical CO₂ extraction. This study also objectively demonstrated the safety and anti-inflammatory effect of the nano-encapsulated lipid-soluble green tea leaf extract which is used as functional materials in the cosmetic industry.

Selenocysteine, a sulfur‑containing amino acid, can modulate cellular oxidative stress defense systems by incorporating into anti‑oxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxin reductase. Selenocysteine can also prevent cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and cardiovascular diseases. A recent study revealed that dietary supplementation with selenocysteine can increase the resistance of Caenorhabditis elegans to environmental stressors and its lifespan. The objective of the present study was to identify the underlying mechanism involved in the lifespan‑extending effect of selenocysteine and the effect of selenocysteine on age‑associated pathophysiological changes. Lifespan assays with known long‑lived mutants of age‑1 (the ortholog of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase), clk‑1 (the ortholog of demethoxyubiquinone hydroxylase) and eat‑2 (a ligand-gated ion channel subunit) revealed that the effect of selenocysteine on lifespan specifically overlapped with that of the eat‑2 mutation, a genetic model of dietary restriction (DR). Selenocysteine mimicked the effect of DR on the bacterial dilution method. It required SKN-1 (the ortholog of mammalian nuclear factor-erythroid-related factor) for lifespan extension. In addition, selenocysteine significantly delayed the paralysis induced by human amyloid‑β gene, positively correlated with the incidence of Alzheimer's disease. The effect of selenocysteine on amyloid‑β‑induced toxicity was dependent on the nuclear localization of DAF‑16. Reduced survival caused by high‑glucose‑diet was recovered by selenocysteine. Selenocysteine also reduced the cellular level of reactive oxygen species known to be increased by high‑glucose‑diet. The results of the present study suggested that selenocysteine can mimic the effect of DR on lifespan and age‑associated pathophysiological alterations, providing scientific evidence for the development of DR mimetics using selenocysteine.

Purpose. Pterional craniotomy is a useful approach for the treatment of a variety of intracranial pathologies. However, it can result in temporal hollowing, which causes significant craniomaxillofacial asymmetry and esthetic deformity. The present study was performed to determine the postoperative outcomes of patients following frontotemporal depression reconstruction using a high-density porous polyethylene (HDPE) implant (Medpor®; Stryker, Kalamazoo, MI) after pterional craniotomy.Materials and Methods. The patients had undergone reconstruction of frontotemporal depression using Medpor® implants after pterional craniotomy at our medical institution during the period from February 2010 to March 2014. We evaluated the thickness and volume of both the temporalis muscle and Medpor® implant through a retrospective review of the medical records and computed tomography (CT) scans of 92 patients.Results. The mean temporalis muscle thickness ratio (muscle thickness of the affected side/nonaffected side) was 0.61 ± 0.16. The mean reconstructed temporalis muscle thickness ratio (muscle and Medpor® implant thickness of affected side/muscle thickness of nonaffected side) was 1.15 ± 0.02. The mean temporalis muscle volume ratio (muscle volume of affected side/nonaffected side) was 0.67 ± 0.02. The mean reconstructed temporalis muscle volume ratio (muscle and Medpor® implant volume of affected side/muscle volume of nonaffected side) was 1.18 ± 0.02.Conclusions. Temporalis muscle thickness and volume were significantly decreased on the affected side after pterional craniotomy. Reconstruction of frontotemporal lesions using Medpor® implants after the pterional approach improved temporal hollowing without additional complications.

Recently, there have been reports that chronic insomnia acts as an insult in the brain, causing memory loss through the production of ROS, inflammation, and, Alzheimer's disease if persistent. Insomnia remains the leading cause of sleep disturbance and as such has serious implications for public health. Patients with Alzheimer's disease are also known to suffer from severe sleep disturbance. Meanwhile, vitexin is a key ingredient in Passiflora incarnata L (passion flower, PF) extract, which is known to help with sleep. This medicinal plant has been used as a folk remedy for sedation, anxiety and sleep since centuries ago, but the standardization work has not been done and the extent of the effect has not been clearly demonstrated. For this reason, we tried to test the possibility that repeated administration of PF could improve the memory by promoting hippocampal neurogenesis at the DBA/2 mice known have inherited sleep disorders, as well as preventive effects of Alzheimer's disease. Here, we found that vitexin, which is the main bioactive component of ethanol extracts from leaves and fruits (ratio; 8:2) of PF, confirmed the improvement of neurogenesis (DCX) of DBA/2 mice repeated PF oral administration by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and western blot analysis. PF-treated group showed increased the neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus compared with that of vehicle-treated group, but the inflammation markers Iba-1 (microglial marker) and COX-2 were inconsistent between the groups. However, we found COX-2 signal is essential for hippocampal neurogenesis according to the additional IHC experiments using COX-2 inhibitor and pIkappaB have shown. In addition, although prescription sleeping pills have been reported to show significant changes in appetite and metabolic rate from time to time, no changes in the feeding behavior, body weight, metabolic rate and body composition of the animals were observed by administration of PF. Interestingly, we found that short-term oral administration of PF displayed improved memory according to the water maze test. Quantitative analysis of Tau protein, which is a marker of Alzheimer's disease, was performed in the SD rats and DBA/2 mice by repeated PF oral administration and pTau/Tau values were significantly decreased in PF-treated group than vehicle-treated group. In conclusion, our results suggest that PF lead high hippocampal neurogenesis in the animals even in inherited sleep-disturbed animals. The increased hippocampal neurogenesis functionally enhanced memory and learning functions by repeated PF oral administration. These results identify PF as a potential therapy for enhancing memory functions and prevention of Alzheimer's disease through actions on the hippocampus.

We compared transplant outcomes between donor types and stem cell sources for childhood acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The medical records of children with AML in the Yeungnam region of Korea from January 2000 to June 2017 were reviewed. In all, 76 children with AML (male-to-female ratio = 46:30) received allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). In total, 29 patients received HSCT from either a matched-related donor or a mismatched-related donor, 32 patients received an unrelated donor, and 15 patients received umbilical cord blood. In term of stem cell sources, bone marrow was used in 15 patients and peripheral blood in 46 patients. For all HSCT cases, the 5-year overall survival (OS) was 73.1% (95% CI: 62.7-83.5) and the 5-year event-free survival (EFS) was 66.1% (95% CI: 54.5-77.7). There was no statistical difference in 5-year OS according to the donor types or stem cell sources (P = .869 and P = .911). There was no statistical difference in 5-year EFS between donor types or stem cell sources (P = .526 and P = .478). For all HSCT cases, the 5-year relapse rate was 16.1% (95% CI: 7.3-24.9) and the 5-year non-relapse mortality (NRM) was 13.3% (95% CI: 5.1-21.5). There was no statistical difference in the 5-year relapse rate according to the donor types or stem cell sources (P = .971 and P = .965). There was no statistical difference in the 5-year NRM between donor types or stem cell sources (P = .461 and P = .470).

The vine stem of Spatholobus suberectus Dunn (SS) is used as a traditional herbal medicine in China. Chinese herbal medicines are well known as natural bioactive compounds that can be used as new medicines, and their antioxidant and anticancer effects have also been reported. This study aimed to examine the anticancer effect of a high-pressure hot-water SS extract on rat C6 glioma cells. The SS extract effectively suppressed the viability and proliferation of C6 glioma cells through an antioxidant effect. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in cancer cells are higher than that in normal cells. If the ROS level falls below that required for the growth of cancer cells, their rapid proliferation and growth can be suppressed. We also measured the induction of mitochondrial membrane depolarization and cell cycle arrest effect caused by the SS extract in C6 glioma cells through a FACS analysis. In addition, we observed an increase in STAT3, p53, E2F1, and p21 mRNA expression and a decrease in Bcl-2 mRNA expression by quantitative PCR. An increase in p21 protein expression of over 83% was observed through western blot analysis. All these data support the fact that the high-pressure hot-water SS extract has the potential to be used for glioma treatment.
