Abstract

From the end of 1997 to early 1998, the relatively steady-state solar-minimum conditions provided an ideal period to study the solar modulation of anomalous cosmic rays (ACRs) and galactic cosmic rays (GCRs). Using observations of the energy spectra of the most abundant elements (H, He, C, N, 0, and Ne) from an array of spacecraft and instruments, we calculate the radial gradients for ACRs and GCRs over a wide range of rigidity. The GCR radial gradient is near zero for all rigidities, out to 70 AU. The ACR radial gradient shows a strong rigidity dependence in the middle heliosphere, which is expected, but the rigidity dependence is not present in the outer heliosphere, and is not obvious in the inner heliosphere.

Abstract

The characteristics of solar energetic particles (SEP) as observed in interplanetary space provide fundamental information about the origin of these particles, and the acceleration and propagation processes at the Sun and in interplanetary space. Furthermore, energetic particles provide information on the development and structure of coronal mass ejections as they propagate from the solar corona into the interplanetary medium. In this paper we review the measurements of energetic particles in interplanetary space and discuss their implication for our understanding of the sources, and of acceleration and propagation processes. Abstract

From 1999 until the end of 2000 the Ulysses spacecraft was traveling back towards the southern solar polar region from about 5 AU to less than 2.5 AU. In this time period the solar activity was close to the maximum. The results of a preliminary analysis of energetic particle composition data covering the energy range 4-20 MeV/n recorded by the COSPIN/LET instrument are shown. Abstract

We present measurements of energetic (∼2 to 40 MeV/n) ion spectra and abundance ratios using the COSPIN/LET instrument flown onboard Ulysses. These measurements span almost a complete solar cycle in time and cover an extensive region of the inner heliosphere (heliocentric distance from 1 to 5 AU and heliographic latitude from the ecliptic to ±80°). We are able to characterise ions associated with solar energetic particle events and those that belong to the anomalous cosmic ray (ACR) component. Abundance ratios measured in the distinct particle regimes encountered throughout the Ulysses mission are collated and compared to similar measurements made by other spacecraft. We investigate in detail the evolution of the ACR oxygen energy spectrum during solar minimum and relate our observations to models of ACR transport. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

NEP1 (necrosis- and ethylene-inducing peptide 1)-like proteins ( NLPs) have been identified in a variety of taxonomically unrelated plant pathogens and share a common characteristic of inducing responses of plant defense and cell death in dicotyledonous plants. Even though some aspects of NLP action have been well characterized, nothing is known about the global range of modifications in proteome and metabolome of NLP-treated plant cells. Here, using both proteomic and metabolomic approaches we were able to identify the global molecular and biochemical changes in cells of Nicotiana benthamiana elicited by short-term treatment with MpNEP2, a NLP of Moniliophthora perniciosa, the basidiomycete responsible for the witches' broom disease on cocoa ( Theobroma cacao L.). Approximately 100 protein spots were collected from 2- DE gels in each proteome, with one-third showing more than twofold differences in the expression values. Fifty-three such proteins were identified by mass spectrometry ( MS)/ MS and mapped into specific metabolic pathways and cellular processes. Most MpNEP2 upregulated proteins are involved in nucleotide-binding function and oxidoreductase activity, whereas the downregulated proteins are mostly involved in glycolysis, response to stress and protein folding. Thirty metabolites were detected by gas spectrometry ( GC)/ MS and semi-quantified, of which eleven showed significant differences between the treatments, including proline, alanine, myo-inositol, ethylene, threonine and hydroxylamine. The global changes described affect the reduction-oxidation reactions, ATP biosynthesis and key signaling molecules as calcium and hydrogen peroxide.
