We report the superconductivity of CaSn3 single crystals with a AuCu3-type structure, namely cubic space group Pm3̅m. The superconducting transition temperature TC = 4.2 K is determined by the magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and heat capacity measurements. The magnetization versus magnetic field (M–H) curve at low temperatures shows a typical-II superconducting behavior. The estimated lower and upper critical fields are about 125 Oe and 1.79 T, respectively. The penetration depth λ(0) and coherence length ξ(0) are calculated to be approximately 1147 nm and 136 nm by the Ginzburg–Landau equations. The estimated Sommerfeld coefficient of the normal state γN is about 2.9 mJ mol−1 K−2. ΔC/γNTC = 1.13 and λep = 0.65 suggest that the CaSn3 single crystal is a weakly coupled superconductor. Electronic band structure calculations show a complex multi-sheet Fermi surface formed by three bands and a low density of states (DOSs) at the Fermi level, which is consistent with the experimental results. Based on the analysis of electron–phonon coupling of AX3 compounds (A = Ca, La, and Y; X = Sn and Pb), we theoretically proposed a way to increase TC in the system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dynamics of influenza A viral load in respiratory samples collected from adult A(H1N1)pdm09 influenza patients were investigated. Three respiratory specimens were obtained every 2–4 days and clinical findings were recorded at the time each specimen was collected. A total of 105 serial specimens were collected from 35 patients. Viral clearance was more rapid in patients aged 15–29 years than patients aged 30–49 years (P < 0·01) or ⩾50 years (P < 0·01). Hospitalized patients showed slow viral clearance compared to outpatients (P < 0·01). Resolution of cough and headache was correlated with viral load reduction in respiratory specimens. Viral shedding was found in 17 patients (48·6%) 5 days after symptom onset. Time to hospital visit after symptom onset was significantly correlated with prolonged viral shedding (odds ratio 9·0, 95% confidence interval 1·56–51·87, P = 0·01). Rubus coreanus fruits have been employed as a traditional medicine for centuries in the Asia-Pacific region. Its pharmacological action differs according to the different extraction methods utilized and the degree of fruit ripening. In this study, we determined the cellular effect of different ethanol extracts of mature and immature Rubus coreanus fruits in human hepatic cell line, HepG2 cells. The antioxidant activity, effect on superoxide dismutase activity and cholesterol biosynthesis efficiency was also evaluated. Immature Rubus coreanus extract showed higher antioxidant capability, compared with that of its mature fractions. Cellular antioxidant proteins including HO-1, Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase and catalase were highly expressed in the presence of Rubus coreanus. Cholesterol levels in HepG2 cells treated with the water fraction of immature Rubus coreanus were significantly reduced. This antihyperlipidaemic action of Rubus coreanus is a consequence of cholesterol biosynthesis and extracellular secretion in HepG2 cells. These results indicate that among different ethanol fraction of mature and immature Rubus coreanus fruit extracts, water extract of immature fruit extract shows higher antioxidant as well as higher antihyperlipidaemic action. In Japan and Korea, outbreaks of scuticociliatosis have frequently occurred in Japanese flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus. Morphological observations and small subunit rRNA gene sequences have shown that the causative agent of scuticociliatosis in the flounder is Miamiensis avidus (syn. Philasterides dicentrarchi). In this study, we elucidated the antigenic differences between six Japanese M. avidus isolates as an initial step toward developing an effective vaccine against the disease. Four Japanese flounder isolates (IyoI, Nakajima, JF05To and Mie0301 isolates), one spotted knifejaw, Oplegnathus punctatus, isolate (SK05Kyo), and one ridged-eye flounder, Pleuronichthys cornutus, isolate (RF05To) were subjected to serological analysis. Antisera against IyoI, SK05Kyo, Nakajima and Mie0301 isolates were raised in rabbits and used for immobilization assays and Western blotting. Immobilization assays showed that the six isolates could be divided into three groups, tentatively designated serotype I for IyoI, JF05To, RF05To, SK05Kyo, serotype II for Nakajima and serotype III for Mie0301. Western blotting results supported these three serotypes, with marked similarities in the banding profiles of IyoI, JF05To, RF05To and SK05Kyo isolates, which were distinct from the Nakajima and Mie0301 isolates. Three isolates, IyoI, Nakajima and Mie0301 that were selected as representatives of each serotype, were highly pathogenic to Japanese flounder by experimental infection. The advancement of virtual reality (VR) technology in cyberspace is amazing, but its development is mainly concentrated on the visual part. In this paper, the development of VR technology to produce sound based on the exact physics is studied. Our main concern is on the sound generated from vibrating structures. This may be useful, for example, in apprehending sound field characteristics of an aircraft cabin in design stage.To calculate sound pressure from curved surface of a structure, a new integration scheme is developed in boundary element method. Several example problems are solved to confirm our integration scheme. The pressure distributions on a uniformly driven sphere and cylinders are computed and compared with analytic solutions, and radiation efficiency of a vibrating plate under one-dimensional flow is also calculated. Also, to realize sound through computer simulation, two concepts, “structure-oriented analysis” and “human-oriented analysis”, are proposed. Cross-sectional investigations of homelessness have many potential biases. Data from 2,452 individuals enrolled in a longitudinal cohort study of Baltimore, Maryland, residents recruited in 1988-1989 with a history of injection drug use were analyzed to identify the extent and determinants of homelessness. Proportions having ever experienced homelessness were compared across subgroups of injection drug users (IDUs) who were human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) negative, HIV positive, and HIV seroconverting. Logistic regression identified independent predictors of homelessness. In the cohort, 1,144 (46.7%) participants experienced homelessness during the course of the study. There were differences in prevalence of homelessness by serostatus: 42.4% (n = 621) of participants who remained HIV negative were ever homeless, while 50.6% (n = 346) of HIV-infected individuals and 58.9% (n = 178) of those who seroconverted during the study were ever homeless (P < .001). Participants who consistently denied active injection drug use during follow-up were unlikely to experience homelessness (19%). Independent predictors of homelessness were male sex, HIV seroprevalence, and HIV seroconversion. Following participants over time captures more experiences of homelessness than cross-sectional studies and more accurately identifies risk characteristics. Summary. For the potential use as recombinant vaccine, canine parvovirus (CPV) major capsid protein VP2 was expressed using Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPV) vector. CPV VP2 gene was introduced into polyhedrin-based BmNPV transfer vector pBmKSK3, and recombinant virus BmK1-Parvo was prepared. When anti-CPV.VP2 monoclonal antibody was employed in immunofluorescence staining, an intense signal was observed within BmK1-Parvo-infected Bm5 cells but not within uninfected cells or cells infected with a wild-type BmNPV-K1. In hemagglutination assay, the expression level of VP2 were 3.2 × 103 HA units/ml from infected Bm5 cells, 2.1× 105 HA units/larvae from infected larval fat body, and 1.6× 106 HA units/ml from infected larval hemolymph. These results suggested that BmNPV vector system using B. mori larva as host could be applied to efficient mass-production of recombinant vaccines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A total of 19 paraffin-embedded endometrial tissue blocks were obtained from high-dose progestogen-exposed patients. A labelled streptavidin-biotin-alkaline phosphatase method was used with antibodies against von Willebrand factor (vWF) and CD34. The density of CD34 and vWF positive (CD34+ and vWF+) vessels in progestogen-exposed endometria (103 +/- 9.6/mm2 and 106 +/- 8.7/mm2) was significantly lower than in endometria from women with normal cycles (169 +/- 9.3/mm2 and 136 +/- 8.0/mm2) (P < 0.05). In women with normal menstrual cycles the concentration of CD34+ vessels was significantly higher than the number of vWF+ vessels (P = 0.0001). By comparison, the concentration of CD34+ vessels was similar to the concentration of vWF+ vessels in progestogen-exposed endometria. The ratios of vascular density as determined by vWF+ and CD34+ staining the control and progestogen groups were 0.81 and 1.05 respectively (P = 0.0001). Dilated venules were seen in the progestogen group. This study has demonstrated firstly that CD34 antibody detected the endothelial cells in a higher proportion of small endometrial vessels than vWF, and secondly that high-dose progestogen exposure significantly decreased the density of microvessels and increased the number of dilated venules in endometrium.
