Abstract

In this work, we prepared zinc stannate (ZTO) thin films by RF sputtering starting from a sintered ceramic target with Zn:Sn ratio 2:1, by varying the argon/oxygen pressures during the deposition process. Thin films were deposited on alumina substrates at 400 degrees C, and subsequently annealed at 600 degrees C in the air. The transparency typical for the as-deposited films was preserved even after their annealing at 600 degrees C in the air, where the high temperature was crucial for the improvement of the crystalline Zn2SnO4 , ZTO phase, as confirmed by Raman measurements. Additionally, the post-deposition thermal treatment resulted in porous ZTO films suitable for gas sensing application. The structural and surface morphological properties of thin films were investigated by Raman spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). Finally, the gas sensing properties towards nitrogen dioxide, ethanol and acetone have been tested, showing the high potentiality of this material as the gas sensor for ethanol and acetone at 400 degrees C, and nitrogen dioxide at 200 degrees C.

Abstract

Structural characterization of nanosized W-Ti-O magnetron-sputtered films was carried out and it was found that the evolution of the films were quite complex as several nanophase were determined. The characterization was carried out with the means of electron microscope and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy.

Abstract

In this paper we report on Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) gas sensors based on quartz two-port resonators configured as oscillators at resonant frequency of 915 MHz. Nanowires (NW) of semiconducting tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) have been grown by Vapor Phase (VP) process and used as filler in a nanocomposite layer to fabricate a highly-sensitive nanomaterial for gas detection, at room temperature. The nanocomposite layer consisting of an organic host-matrix of cadmium arachidate (CdA) and a weight-tailored filler of SnO 2 NW has been deposited as thin film onto SAW resonators by means of the molecular engineering Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique. SAW gas sensors performance was investigated in presence of ppm-level of ethanol, methanol, ethylacetate, toluene, at room temperature. The results demonstrate good sensitivity to vapors under test at ppm-level and a SAW gas response tuned by the weight-content of filler of SnO 2 NW in the LB nanocomposite layer.

194. Electronic Nose for Microbiological Quality Control of Food Products

Abstract

Electronic noses (ENs) have recently emerged as valuable candidates in various areas of food quality control and traceability, including microbial contamination diagnosis. In this paper, the EN technology for microbiological screening of food products is reviewed. Four paradigmatic and diverse case studies are presented: (a) Alicyclobacillus spp. spoilage of fruit juices, (b) early detection of microbial contamination in processed tomatoes, (c) screening of fungal and fumonisin contamination of maize grains, and (d) fungal contamination on green coffee beans. Despite many successful results, the high intrinsic variability of food samples together with persisting limits of the sensor technology still impairs ENs trustful applications at the industrial scale. Both advantages and drawbacks of sensor technology in food quality control are discussed. Finally, recent trends and future directions are illustrated.

Abstract

International audience; We report the ability to use TiO 2 nanotube as a guide layer to achieve the vertical growth of ZnO nanorods, in additive-free bath. First, we focused on the anodisation conditions (cell voltage and anodisation time) to produce TiO 2 nanotube thin films grown from a 1.5 µm thick Ti layer sputtered onto Si. Highly organised titania nanotubes were obtained in glycerol viscous electrolyte. In a second step, the electrochemical growth of ZnO grains has been investigated from a zinc nitrate bath at 70°C on both Ti foil and TiO 2 nanotubes. ZnO deposition mechanism has been highlighted through the electrochemical experiments in conjunction with XRD technique and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examinations. On Ti foils, we show that addition of additives is required to obtain a highly oriented nanostructured ZnO deposit. On TiO 2 nanotubes, additives are not necessary to obtain such a deposit: Titania nanotubes can be used to guide the vertical growth of hybrid nano-architectured ZnO/TiO 2 electrode.

Abstract

Real-time monitoring of dye loading (N3 and N719) under continuous flow conditions on TiO(2) photoanodes for dye-sensitized solar cells has been applied to quantitatively investigate dye uptake kinetics, demonstrating that static impregnation provides in all cases higher dye loading and, as a consequence, better working devices.
