151. Revised cross section for RHIC dipole magnets

Abstract: Using the experience gained in designing and building Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) dipole prototype magnets, an improved cross section has been developed. Significant features of this design include the use of only three wedges for field shaping and wedge cross sections which are sectors of an annulus. To aid in the understanding of the actual magnets, one has been sectioned, and detailed mechanical and photographic measurements have been made of the wire positions. A comparison of these measurements with magnetic field measurements is presented. >

153. RHIC D0 insertion dipole design iterations during production

Abstract: Iterations to the cross section of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) D0 insertion dipole magnets were made during the production. This was included as part of the production plan because no R&D or pre-production magnets were built prior to the start of production. The first magnet produced had the desired coil pre-stress and low field harmonics in the body of the magnet and is therefore being used in the RHIC Machine. On the first eight magnets, iterations were carried out to minimize the iron saturation and to compensate for the end harmonics. This paper will discuss the details of the iterations made, the obstacles encountered, and the results obtained. Also included will be a brief summary of the magnet design and performance.

154. Magnetic design and measurement of nonlinear multipole magnets for the APT beam expander system

Abstract: Two prototype nonlinear multipole magnets have been designed for use in the 800-MeV beam test of the APT beam-expansion concept at LANSCE. The iron-dominated magnets each consist of three independent coils, two for producing a predominately octupole field with a tunable duodecapole component, and one for canceling the residual quadrupole field. Two such magnets, one for shaping each transverse plane, are required to produce a rectangular, uniform beam current density distribution with sharp edges on the APT target. This report will describe the magnetic design of these magnets, along with field measurements, and a comparison to the magnetic design.

Abstract: The production run of superconducting magnets for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) project at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is well underway. Of the 288 arc dipoles needed for the collider, more than 120 have been delivered. More than 150 arc quadrupoles have been delivered. All of these magnets have been accepted for RHIC. This paper reports the construction and performance of these magnets. Novel features of design and test, introduced to enhance technical performance and control costs, are also discussed.

Abstract: The field quality in the are dipoles built thus far for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) not only meets machine requirements but is significantly better than that expected from scaling laws based on previous large scale superconducting magnet production for particle accelerators. In this paper we describe the evolution of the present cross section and the design philosophy that has led to these improvements. The techniques described here have been found quite efficient to adopt in the production environment, where schedule and cost considerations become important. Moreover, the techniques developed during the R&D program have resulted in making the saturation induced harmonics negligible, despite the fact that the iron is very close to the coil.

Abstract: A muon cooling ring is currently being investigated as a possible muon cooling experiment that can demonstrate 6D cooling. The cooling ring consists of long solenoid channels with liquid H/sub 2/ absorbers and RF cavities, shorter field flipped solenoids with LiH wedge absorbers and wedge shaped 45/spl deg/ bending dipole magnets. The ring is designed to cool muons with E/sub kin/=250 MeV. This study examines the magnetic system of the muon ring cooler. The purpose at this point is to establish physical fields for the magnetic system that can be used in tracking studies.

Abstract: The need for intense muon beams for muon colliders and for neutrino factories based on muon storage rings leads to a concept of 1-4 MW proton beams incident a moving target that is inside a 20-T solenoid magnet, with a mercury jet as a preferred example. Novel technical issues for such a system include disruption of the mercury jet by the proton beam and distortion of the jet on entering the solenoid, as well as more conventional issues of materials lifetime and handling of activated materials in an intense radiation environment. As part of the R&D program of the Neutrino Factory and Muon Collider Collaboration, R&D effort related to targetry is being performed within the context of BNL E951, first results of which are discussed here and in other contributions to this conference.

Abstract: We have measured the W boson mass using the DO detector and a data sample of 82 pb(-1) from the Fermilab Tevatron collider. This measurement uses W-->enu decays, where the electron is close to a boundary of a central electromagnetic calorimeter module. Such "edge" electrons have not been used in any previous DO analysis, and represent a 14% increase in the W boson sample size. For these electrons, new response and resolution parameters are determined, and revised backgrounds and underlying event energy flow measurements are made. When the current measurement is combined with previous DO W boson mass measurements, we obtain M-W=80.483+/-0.084 GeV. The 8% improvement from the previous DO measurement is primarily due to the improved determination of the response parameters for non-edge electrons using the sample of Z bosons with non-edge and edge electrons.

Abstract: We present the results of a search for leptoquark (LQ) pairs in (85.2+/-3.7) pb(-1) of pp* collider data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. We observe no evidence for leptoquark production and set a limit on sigma(pp*-->LQLQ-->nunu+jets) as a function of the mass of the leptoquark (m(LQ)). Assuming the decay LQ-->nuq, we exclude scalar leptoquarks for m(LQ) < 98 GeV/c(2), and vector leptoquarks for m(LQ) < 200 GeV/c(2) and coupling which produces the minimum cross section, at a 95% confidence level.

Abstract: We have performed a search for scalar top quark (stop) pair production in the inclusive electron-muon-missing transverse energy final state, using a sample of p (p) over bar events corresponding to 108.3 pb (-1) of data collected with the D0 detector at Fermilab. The search is done in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model assuming that the sneutrino is the lightest supersymmetric particle. For the dominant decays of the lightest stop, (t) over tilde-->b (χ) over tilde (+)(1) and (t) over tilde-->bl (ν) over tilde , no evidence for signal is found. We derive cross-section limits as a function of stop ((t) over tilde), chargino ((χ) over tilde (+)(1)), and sneutrino ((ν) over tilde ) masses.

Abstract: The D empty set Collaboration has studied for the first time the properties of hadron-collider jets reconstructed with a successive-combination algorithm based on relative transverse momenta (k(perpendicular to)) of energy clusters. Using the standard value D = 1.0 of the jet-separation parameter in the k(perpendicular to) algorithm, we find that the p(T) of such jets is higher than the E-T of matched jets reconstructed with cones of radius R = 0.7, by about 5 (8) GeV at p(T) approximate to90 (240) GeV. To examine internal jet structure, the k(perpendicular to) algorithm is applied within D = 0.5 jets to resolve any subjets. The multiplicity of subjets in jet samples at roots = 1800 GeV and 630 GeV is extracted separately for gluons (M (g) ) and quarks (M q), and the ratio of average subjet multiplicities in gluon and quark jets is measured as ([M g] - 1)/([M q] - 1) = 1.84+/-0.15 (stat)(-0.18)(+0.22) (syst). This ratio is in agreement with the expectations from the HERWIG Monte Carlo event generator and a resummation calculation, and with observations in e(+) e(-) annihilations, and is close to the naive prediction for the ratio of color charges of C-A/C-F = 9/4 = 2.25.

Abstract: The inclusive cross section for production of isolated photons has been measured in p (p) over bar collisions at roots = 630 GeV with the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The photons span a transverse energy (E-T) range from 7-49 GeV and have pseudorapidity \eta\ s = 1800 GeV to form a ratio of the cross sections. Comparison of next-to-leading-order QCD with the measured cross section at 630 GeV and the ratio of cross sections show satisfactory agreement in most of the E-T range.

Abstract: We present results of searches for technirho (rho (T)), techniomega (omega (T)), and Z' particles, using the decay channels rho (T), omega (T), Z' --> e(+)e(-). The search is based on 124.8 pb(-1) of data collected by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron during 1992-1996. In the absence of a signal, we set 95% C.L. upper limits on the cross sections for the processes p (p) over bar --> rho (T), omega (T), Z' - e(+)e(-) as a function of the mass of the decaying particle. For certain model parameters, we exclude the existence of degenerate rho (T) and omega (T) states with masses below about 200 GeV. We exclude a Z' with mass below 670 GeV, assuming that it has the same couplings to fermions as the Z boson.

Abstract: We report on a search for supersymmetry using the D\O{} detector. The 1994--1996 data sample of $\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV $p\overline{p}$ collisions was analyzed for events containing two leptons $(e$ or $\ensuremath{\mu}),$ two or more jets, and missing transverse energy. Assuming the minimal supergravity model, with ${A}_{0}=0$ and $\ensuremath{\mu}l0,$ various thresholds were employed to optimize the search. No events were found beyond expectation from the background. We set a lower limit at the 95% C.L. of 255 $\mathrm{GeV}{/c}^{2}$ for equal mass squarks and gluinos for $\mathrm{tan}\ensuremath{\beta}=2,$ and present exclusion contours in the ${(m}_{0}{,m}_{1/2})$ plane for $\mathrm{tan}\ensuremath{\beta}=2$--6.

Abstract: We present the first measurement of the electron angular distribution parameter α 2 in W→eν events produced in proton-antiproton collisions as a function of the W boson transverse momentum. Our analysis is based on data collected using the DO detector during the 1994–1995 Fermilab Tevatron run. We compare our results with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD, which predicts an angular distribution of (1±α 1 cosθ ∗ +α 2 cos 2 θ ∗ ), where θ ∗ is the polar angle of the electron in the Collins-Soper frame. In the presence of QCD corrections, the parameters α 1 and α 2 become functions of p T W , the W boson transverse momentum. This measurement provides a test of next-to-leading order QCD corrections which are a non-negligible contribution to the W boson mass measurement.

Abstract: Neutrino beams from the decay of muons in a storage ring offer the prospect of very high flux, well-understood spectra, and equal numbers of electron and muon neutrinos, as desirable for detailed exploration of neutrino oscillations via long baseline detectors. Such beams require large numbers of muons, and hence a high performance target station at which a 1-4 MW proton beam of 16-24 GeV impinges on a compact target, all inside a high field solenoid channel to capture as much of the phase volume of soft pions as possible. A first concept was based on a carbon target, as reported in 2000 the Neutrino Factory Study-I. A higher performance option based on a free mercury jet has been studied in 2001 as part of the Neutrino Factory Feasibility Study-II. An overview of a mercury jet target facility is presented here, including requirements, design concept and summaries of simulated performance. Further details are presented in related papers at this conference.

Abstract: We present a search for electroweak production of single top quarks in the electron+jets and muon+jets decay channels. The measurements use ≈90pb -1 of data from Run 1 of the Fermilab Tevatron collider, collected at 1.8 TeV with the DO detector between 1992 and 1995. We use events that include a tagging muon, implying the presence of a b jet, to set an upper limit at the 95% confidence level on the cross section for the s-channel process pp→tb+X of 39 pb. The upper limit for the t-channel process pp→tqb+X is 58 pb.

Abstract: Limits on anomalous $\mathrm{WW}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $\mathrm{WWZ}$ couplings are presented from a study of $WW/W\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{Z}e\ensuremath{\nu}\mathrm{jj}$ events produced in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.8 \mathrm{TeV}.$ Results from the analysis of data collected using the D\O{} detector during the 1993--1995 Tevatron collider run at Fermilab are combined with those of an earlier study from the 1992--1993 run. A fit to the transverse momentum spectrum of the W boson yields direct limits on anomalous $\mathrm{WW}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $\mathrm{WWZ}$ couplings. With the assumption that the $\mathrm{WW}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $\mathrm{WWZ}$ couplings are equal, we obtain $\ensuremath{-}0.34l\ensuremath{\lambda}l0.36$ (with $\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\kappa}=0)$ and $\ensuremath{-}0.43l\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\kappa}l0.59$ (with $\ensuremath{\lambda}=0)$ at the 95% confidence level for a form-factor scale $\ensuremath{\Lambda}=2.0 \mathrm{TeV}.$

Abstract: We report on measurements on inclusive cross sections times branching fractions into electrons for W and Z bosons produced in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.8 TeV. From an integrated luminosity of 84.5 pb(-1) recorded in 1994-1995 using the D empty set detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, we determine sigma(p (p) over bar--> W + X) x B(W-->e nu) = 2310 +/- 10(stat) +/- 50(syst) +/- 100(lum)pb and sigma(p (p) over bar-->Z + X) x B(Z-->ee)=221+/-3(stat)+/-4(syst)+/-10(lum)pb. From these, we derive sigma(p (p) over bar-->W + X) x B(N-->e nu)/sigma(p (p) over bar-->Z + X) x B(Z-->ee) = 10.43+/-0.15(stat) +/- 0.20(syst) +/- 0.10(NLO), B(W-->e nu) = 0.1044+/-0.0015(stat)+/-0.0020(syst)+/-0.0017(theory)+/-0.0010(NLO). and Gamma(w) = 2169 +/- 0.03 l(stat) +/- 0.042(syst) +/- 0.041(theory)+/- 0.022(NLO)GeV. We use the latter to set a 95% confidence level upper limit on the partial decay width of the W boson into nonstandard model final states, Gamma(W)(inv), of 0.213 GeV. Combining these results with those from the 1992-1993 data gives sigma(p (p) over bar-->W+X) x B(W-->e nu)/sigma(p (p) over bar-->Z+X) x B(Z-->ee) = 10.51+/-0.25, Gamma(W) = 2.152 +/- 0.066 GeV, and a 95% C.L. upper limit an Gamma(W)(inv) of 0.191 GeV. Using a sample with a luminosity of 505 nb(-1) taken at root s = 630 GeV, we measure sigma(p (p) over bar--> W+ X) x B(W --> e nu) = 658 +/- 67 pb.

The cross sections, multiplied by their leptonic branching fractions, for production in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV are ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{W}\mathrm{B}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{W}e\ensuremath{\nu})=2.36\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.08\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.13\mathrm{}\mathrm{nb},$ ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{W}\mathrm{B}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{W}\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\nu})=2.09\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.22\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.11\mathrm{}\mathrm{nb},$ ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{Z}\mathrm{B}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{Z}{e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}})=0.218\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.008\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.008\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.012\mathrm{}\mathrm{nb}$, and ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{Z}\mathrm{B}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{Z}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}})=0.178\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.022\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.021\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.009\mathrm{}\mathrm{nb}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic; the third reflects the uncertainty in the integrated luminosity. For the combined electron and muon analyses, we find ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{W}\mathrm{B}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{W}l\ensuremath{\nu})/{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{Z}\mathrm{B}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{Z}{l}^{+}{l}^{\ensuremath{-}})=10.90\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.52$. Assuming standard model couplings, we use this result to determine the width of the W boson, and obtain $\ensuremath{\Gamma}(W)=2.044\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.097 \mathrm{GeV}$.

Abstract: We present a search for charged Higgs bosons in decays of pair-produced top quarks using 109.2 +- 5.8 pb^-1 of data recorded from ppbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV by the D0 detector during 1992-96 at the Fermilab Tevatron. No evidence is found for charged Higgs production, and most parts of the [m(H+),tan(beta)] parameter space where the decay t -> bH+ has a branching fraction close to or larger than that for t -> bW+ are excluded at 95% confidence level. Assuming m(t) = 175 GeV and sigma(ppbar -> ttbar) = 5.5 pb, for m(H+) = 60 GeV, we exclude tan(beta) < 0.97 and tan(beta) > 40.9., 11 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PRL

Abstract: The interaction region (IR) quadrupoles for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are the best field quality superconducting magnets ever built for any major accelerator. This field quality is primarily achieved with the help of eight tuning shims that remove the residual errors from a magnet after it is built and tested. These shims overcome the limitations from the typical tolerances in parts and manufacturing. This paper describes the tuning shims and discusses the evolution of a flexible approach that allowed changes in the design parameters and facilitated using parts with significant dimensional variations while controlling cost and maintaining schedule and field quality. The RHIC magnet program also discovered that quench and thermal cycles cause small changes in magnet geometry. The ultimate field quality performance is now understood to be determined by these changes rather than the manufacturing tolerances or the measurement errors.

Abstract: A measurement of the mass of the W boson is presented which is based on a sample of 5982 W → eνv decays observed in pp collisions at √s=1.8 TeV with the D∅ detector during the 1992-1993 run. From a fit to the transverse mass spectrum, combined with measurements of the Z boson mass, the W boson mass is measured to be MW=80.350±0.140(stat)±0.165(syst)±0.160(scale) GeV/c 2 . Detailed discussions of the determination of the absolute energy scale, the measured efficiencies, and all systematic uncertainties are presented.

Abstract: We have searched for central production of a pair of photons with high transverse energies in $p\bar p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.8$ TeV using $70 pb^{-1}$ of data collected with the D\O detector at the Fermilab Tevatron in 1994--1996. If they exist, virtual heavy pointlike Dirac monopoles could rescatter pairs of nearly real photons into this final state via a box diagram. We observe no excess of events above background, and set lower 95% C.L. limits of $610, 870, or 1580 GeV/c^2$ on the mass of a spin 0, 1/2, or 1 Dirac monopole., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: The gauge boson pair production processes Wg, WW, WZ, and Zg were studied using pbarp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of ~14 pb-1 at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. Analysis of Wg prod with subsequent W boson decay to lv (l=e,mu) is reported, including a fit to the pT spectrum of the photons which leads to limits on anomalous WWg couplings. A search for WW prod with subsequent decay to l-lbar-v-vbar (l=e,mu) is presented leading to an upper limit on the WW prod cross section and limits on anomalous WWg and WWZ couplings. A search for high pT W bosons in WW and WZ prod is described, where one W boson decays to an ev and the second W boson or the Z boson decays to two jets. A maximum likelihood fit to the pT spectrum of W bosons resulted in limits on anomalous WWg and WWZ couplings. A combined fit to the three data sets which provided the tightest limits on anomalous WWg and WWZ couplings is also described. Limits on anomalous ZZg and Zgg couplings are presented from an analysis of the photon ET spectrum in Zg events in the decay channels (ee, mu-mu, and v-vbar) of the Z boson., 77 Pages including 40 Figures. Abstract: Muon Colliders have unique technical and physics advantages and disadvantages when compared with both hadron and electron machines. They should thus be regarded as complementary. Parameters are given of 4 TeV and 0.5 TeV high luminosity \mu^+ \mu^- colliders, and of a 0.5 TeV lower luminosity demonstration machine. We discuss the various systems in such muon colliders, starting from the proton accelerator needed to generate the muons and proceeding through muon cooling, acceleration and storage in a collider ring. Abstract: We summarize the discussions of the working group on Machine Design. The scope of the working group included the entire accelerator system from beam cooling to the collider and the collider ring itself. Particular topics that were discussed in some detail included acceleration options, magnet designs (including the accelerator arcs and collider ring), instabilities, particularly in the collider ring, and lattice issues, particularly in the interaction regions (IRs). Considerable challenges remain in defining a complete machine design for the collider.

Abstract: We present results on the search for the top quark in {ital p{bar p}} collisions at {radical}{ital s} =1.8 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 13.5{plus_minus}1.6 pb{sup {minus}1}. We have considered {ital t{bar t}} production in the standard model using electron and muon dilepton decay channels ({ital t{bar t}}{r_arrow}{ital e}{mu}+jets, {ital ee}+jets, and {mu}{mu}+jets) and single-lepton decay channels ({ital t{bar t}}{r_arrow}{ital e}+jets and {mu}+jets) with and without tagging of {ital b} quark jets. An analysis of these data optimized for top quark masses below 140 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2} gives a lower top quark mass limit of 128 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2}. An analysis optimized for higher top quark masses yields 9 events with an expected background of 3.8{plus_minus}0.9. If we assume that the excess is due to {ital t{bar t}} production, and assuming a top quark mass of 180 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2}, we obtain a cross section of 8.2{plus_minus}5.1 pb.

Abstract: The DØ detector is a large general purpose detector for the study of short-distance phenomena in high energy antiproton-proton collisions, now in operation at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The detector focusses upon the detection of electrons, muons, jets and missing transverse momentum. We describe the design and performance of the major elements of the detector, including the tracking chambers, transition radiation detector, liquid argon calorimetry and muon detection. The associated electronics, triggering systems and data acquisition systems are presented. The global mechanical, high voltage, and experiment monitoring and control systems which support the detector are described. We also discuss the design and implementation of software and software support systems that are specific to DØ. © 1994.

Abstract: As part of the program to build and test SSC 50mm aperture prototype dipole magnets, a series of seven full-length (15m-long) dipoles were built and tested at BNL. The design of these magnets and their differences from the earlier 40mm aperture dipole magnets have been discussed elsewhere[1]. In order to thoroughly evaluate the performance of the new design, an extensive and varied schedule of tests were done, and these included quench testing and stress measurements to exhibit mechanical and thermal behavior, a ramp rate quench program to study eddy current heating effects in the conductors, and a multitude of magnetic field measurements to characterize field quality.

Abstract: During the last two years, nine 4‐cm aperture, 17‐m‐long dipole magnet prototypes were produced by Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) under contact with the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) Laboratory. These prototypes are the last phase of a half‐decade‐long R&D program, carried out in collaboration with Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, and aimed at demonstrating the feasibility of the SSC main‐ring dipole magnets. They also lay the groundwork for the 5‐cm‐aperture dipole magnet program now underway. After reviewing the design features of the BNL 4‐cm‐aperture, 17‐m‐long dipole magnets, we describe in detail the various steps of their fabrication. For each step, we discuss the paramaters that need to be mastered, and we compare the values that were achieved for the nine most recent prototypes. The data appear coherent and reproducible, demonstrating that the assembly process is under control. We then analyze the mechanical behavior of these magnets during cooldown and excitation, and we attempt to relate this behavior to the magnet features. The data reveal that the mechanical behavior is sensitive to the collar‐yoke interference and that the magnets exhibit somewhat erratic changes in coil end‐loading during cooldown.

Abstract: A series of four 1.8 m-long model SSC dipole magnets has been constructed at BNL in order to test the new, wider 50 mm aperture SSC design prior to measurements of the full length 15 m-long dipoles. All four short magnets were tested successfully, have exhibited reliable and uniform behavior, and have exceeded the 10% quench margin above the SSC operating point. In addition, some interesting results have led to further ongoing investigations into the effects of ramp rate on quench performance and magnetic multipoles, and into the effect of end force preload on training. This report will describe the basic features of the 50 mm design of these magnets and the experimental methods used in the testing of the magnets. Results from quench tests, ramp rate studies, strain gauge measurements, and magnetic field harmonic measurements will be presented.

Abstract: In this paper we present the magnetic design of the two dimensional coil and iron cross section, referred1, 2 to as DSX201/W6733, for the 50 mm aperture main ring dipole magnet for the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC). The computed values of the allowed field harmonics as a function of current, the quench performance predictions, the stored energy calculations, the effect of random errors on the coil placement and the Lorentz forces on the coil will be presented. The yoke has been optimized to reduce iron saturation effects on the field harmonics. We shall present the summary of this design which will include the expected overall performance of this cross section. Prototypes of these dipoles are being built at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL). There are slight differences between the cross sections at the two laboratories.

Abstract: Over the last year, several 4-cm-aperture, 17-m-long dipole magnet prototypes were built by Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) under contract with the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) Laboratory. These prototypes are the last phase of a half-decade-long R & D program, carried out in collaboration with Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, and aimed at demonstrating the feasibility of the SSC main ring magnets. They also lay the ground for the 5-cm aperture dipole magnet program to be started soon. After reviewing the design features of the BNL 4-cm-aperture, 17-m-long dipole magnets, we describe in detail the various steps of their fabrication. For each step, we discuss the parameters that need to be mastered, and we compare the values that were achieved for the five most recent prototypes. The data appear coherent and reproducible, demonstrating that the assembly process is under control.

Abstract: A Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider is presently in the design stage at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York. It will collide beams of nuclei as heavy as gold, accelerated in two storage rings to energies between 7 and 100 GeV/u. The conventional facilities and injectors for the collider are largely in place. These include the 3.8 km long tunnel enclosure (built as part of the CBA project), four of the six planned experimental halls, a large control center building, a 25 kW helium refrigerator, and injection tunnels from the AGS. (The AGS is presently engaged in a fixed-target program of heavy ion experiments. A Booster synchrotron under construction will allow extending the mass of ion species from sulfur to gold.)

Abstract: Several 17-meter-long SSC R&D dipole magnets, instrumented with numerous voltage taps on the inner quarter coils, have been tested. These magnets, protected with quench heaters, differed in mechanical details as well as in the cables used for the winding. The voltage taps enabled us to measure longitudinal and azimuthal quench propagation velocities. Summary plots of these velocities are presented showing that, even though the Fourier conduction model doesn’t apply, the mechanism of the quench is reproducible from magnet to magnet. Correlations are established between the velocities and the fraction of short sample. After showing that for currents higher than 5000 A the magnet is self-protected, we investigate the relation between the number of MIITs and the quench characteristics.

Abstract: Strange-particle production in charged-current and neutral-current neutrino interactions has been studied using the BNL 7-foot deuterium bubble chamber. A total of 37 charged-current and 9 neutral-current events in the data sample contain one or more strange particles. Three events have $\ensuremath{\Delta}S\ensuremath{\ne}0$. The measured total rate for neutral ${V}^{0}$ production in charged-current interactions is (4.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.0)%. Cross sections are given for low-multiplicity reactions involving neutral strange particles.

Abstract: The total cross sections for ..nu../sub ..mu../n and ..nu../sub ..mu../p charged-current interactions and their ratio R = sigma/sub T/(..nu..n)/sigma/sub T/(..nu..p) have been measured as a function of neutrino energy from 0.4 to 10 GeV. The experiment is performed using the BNL 7-foot deuterium bubble chamber exposed to the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron wide-band neutrino beam. The absolute values of the cross sections are normalized to the quasielastic scattering (..nu../sub ..mu../n..--> mu../sup -/p) cross section. Above 1.6 GeV the data are consistent with the quark-parton model. We find that sigma/sub T/(..nu..n)/E/sub ..nu../ = (1.07 +- 0.05) x 10/sup -38/, sigma/sub T/(..nu..p)/E/sub ..nu../ = (0.54 +- 0.04) x 10/sup -38/, and sigma/sub T/(..nu..N)/E/sub ..nu../ = (0.80 +- 0.03) x 10/sup -38/ cm/sup 2//GeV for = 3.2 GeV, and R = 1.95 +- 0.10 for = 3.7 GeV.

Abstract: Neutral strange particle production in charged-current muon-neutrino interactions have been studied in the Fermilab 15-foot neon bubble chamber. Associated production is expected to be the major source of strange particles in charged-current neutrino interactions. sigma-neutral and xi-minus production by neutrinos was observed. The dependence on various leptonic and hadronic variables is investigated. A fit to single and associated production of s, s/anti-s, and c quarks is described based on the number of single and double strange particle production events. Inclusive neutral strange particle decays (V/sup 0/) production rates as a fraction of all charged-current events are measured and are tabulated. The lambda/K ratio is found to be 0.39 +- 0.04 and the fraction of lambda coming from sigma-neutral is (16 +- 5)%. The single- and double V/sup 0/ production was used to determine the associated s anti-s production rate and single s-quark production rate. 13 refs., 7 figs., 3 tabs. (LEW)

Abstract: The superconducting magnets that were designed and tested for the BNL colliding beam accelerator are described, including dipoles, quadrupoles and trim coils. The dipoles had an effective length of 436 cm, a good field aperture of 8.8 cm diameter, and were designed for an operating field of 5.28 T in a temperature range between 2.6 K and 3.8 K (provided by supercritical helium). The quadrupoles had the same aperture, an effective length of 138.5 cm, and were designed to operate in series with the dipoles, with a gradient of 70.8 T/m. The dipoles incorporated internal sextupole, octupole, and decapole trim coil windings; the quadrupole trim coils consisted of dipole, quadrupole, and dodecapole windings. The design, construction, and performance (training, field quality, quench protection characteristics) of prototype magnets are discussed in considerable detail.

Abstract: In a broadband neutrino exposure of the Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber, we observe the production of the ..sigma../sub c/ /sup + +/(2426) charmed baryon followed by its decay to ..lambda../sub c/ /sup +/(2260) and ..pi../sup +/. We find the mass of the ..lambda../sub c/ /sup +/ to be 2257 +- 10 MeV and the m (..sigma../sub c/ /sup + +/) - m (..lambda../sub c/ /sup +/) mass difference to be 168 +- 3 MeV. Previously unseen two-body decay modes of the ..lambda../sub c/ /sup +/(2260) are observed.

Abstract: A total of 22 muon-neutrino-electron elastic-scattering events (${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}e\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}e$) have been observed in an exposure of the Fermilab 15-foot bubble chamber filled with a heavy neon-hydrogen mixture to a wide-band neutrino beam. The elastic-scattering cross section is measured to be $1.67\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.44\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}42}{E}_{\ensuremath{\nu}}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$ Ge${\mathrm{V}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. The value of the weak mixing angle (${{sin}^{2}\ensuremath{\theta}}_{W}$) determined from this cross section, which is consistent with other measurements of this angle, is ${0.20}_{\ensuremath{-}0.05}^{+0.06}$.

Abstract: We present the results of tests made on two types of uranium/liquid argon calorimeter modules, one electromagnetic and one hadronic, constructed for the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. For electrons and hadrons with energies between 10 and 150 GeV, we present measurements of energy resolution, linearity of response, electromagnetic to hadronic response ratio ( e π ), and longitudinal hadronic shower development. We have also investigated the effects of adding small amounts of methane to the liquid argon.

Abstract: The D0 experiment has used the ‘Structured Analysis/Structured Design’ (SA/SD) methodology in its software development for the past year. The data flow diagrams and data dictionaries of structured analysis were the primary tools used in development of an ideal model of the D0 software system. These and the structure charts developed during the design phase form the basic documentation of the system. Real-time structured development techniques, e.g. state transition diagrams, are employed to describe control functions in some areas, e.g. in the calibration software. The SA/SD methodology has proven to be valuable in the formulation of ideas and in communication between software developers. The methodology and its application to D0 software are described and the benefits and problems are assessed. Problems finding adequate software tools for the VAX environment are discussed and a data dictionary manager developed by D0 using DEC RDB is described.
