One of the most influential rulers of the sixteenth century, Sultan Suleyman I, passed away and was buried temporarily near the fortress of Szigetvár in SW Hungary in 1566. Later, a memorial place was erected on the site in the second half of the sixteenth century. The complex was surrounded by a palisade system and a moat on its northern side. The site was fully destroyed in 1692, and the exact location vanished with time. Recent investigations of historical sources complemented by geophysical, archeological, and geoarcheological investigations managed to identify the location of the site, and probe corings revealed the moat system. This study presents the results of complex chronological, sedimentological, and geochemical investigations done on the sediments accumulated in the moat. Based on geoarcheological data, two major changes could have been noted in the nature of the deposit marking erosion and transportation of soil from the banks of the moat. Elevated concentrations of Fe and K, and high MS values mark the effects of fire on the deposit and accumulation of flue ash. A rise in heavy metals in these horizons is attributable to anthropogenic sources related to the destruction of the site. Chronological data comes from dateable artifacts reposited and 14C dates of charred cereal seeds. A Bayesian age model built using 14C ages constrained by written historical data on site use helped us to determine the age of moat construction and the referred erosion-accumulation events. The older event was dated around 1670, which is in line with historical records of the first siege of Szigetvár. The second event postdates 1684 and thus must correspond to the time of the site’s final siege and later destruction.

Genome-wide genotype data from 48 carefully selected population samples of Transylvania-living Szeklers and non-Szekler Hungarians were analyzed by comparative analysis. Our analyses involved contemporary Hungarians living in Hungary, other Europeans, and Eurasian samples counting 530 individuals altogether. The source of the Szekler samples was the commune of Korond, Transylvania. The analyzed non-Szekler Hungarian samples were collected from villages with a history dating back to the era of the Árpád Dynasty. Population structure by principal component analysis and ancestry analysis also revealed a great within-group similarity of the analyzed Szeklers and non-Szekler Transylvanian Hungarians. These groups also showed similar genetic patterns with each other. Haplotype analyses using identity-by-descent segment discovering tools showed that average pairwise identity-by-descent sharing is similar in the investigated populations, but the Korond Szekler samples had higher average sharing with the Hungarians from Hungary than non-Szekler Transylvanian Hungarians. Average sharing results showed that both groups are isolated compared to other Europeans, and pointed out that the non-Szekler Transylvanian Hungarian inhabitants of the investigated Árpád Age villages are more isolated than investigated Szeklers from Korond. This was confirmed by our autozygosity analysis as well. Identity-by-descent segment analyses and 4-population tests also confirmed that these Hungarian-speaking Transylvanian ethnic groups are strongly related to Hungarians living in Hungary.

This paper presents first chronological results for a Holocene marshland system from the southern part of the Danube-Tisza Interfluve. Radiocarbon (14C) ages were used to build age-depth models relying of probabilistic tools. Four models have been built: a linear one using dates gained via simple calibration, a P_Sequence model, fitting a polynomial function to calibrated dates; a Gamma_Sequence considering priori given and posterior accumulation rates have been constructed. As there was no significant difference between the mean values of individual models all seem suitable for establishing a reliable chronology despite differences in 95% CI ranges. While P_Sequence models underestimated SR, values calculated from the polynomial model were not significantly different from those of the G_Sequence. Based on multiproxy geochemical, sedimentological, paleoecological data the evolution of the system was reconstructed, covering a timespan of ca. 13,000 years starting from 12,000 BC and lasting until 1300 AD. Highest accumulation rates are dated to the Early Middle Ages from the 11th century. Several climate changes could have been identified which are present in other Hungarian and Western European records too, such as the 5b IRD event at ca. 5800 BC, a humid phase around 1600 BC, and a cool humid phase around the 6th century AD.

The peat bog at Homoródszentpál Kerek-tó (Round Lake), situated in Homoród Hills of the Eastern Carpathians in Romania, provides a continuous record of paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental changes from the Early Holocene. In this study, we present a 7500-year-long high-resolution record of past climatic changes and signs of human impact recorded in a peat bog via integrating sedimentological, paleoecological and geochemical proxies. The basin of Round Lake formed around the Pleistocene–Holocene border when the permafrost thawed. Ponded water accumulated in the catchment basin from the beginning of the Holocene but ca. 7500 cal BP years ago lacustrine sedimentation was exchanged for peat accumulation. The 570-cm-long core was subsampled at 2–4 cm intervals and subjected to grain-size, loss-on-ignition (LOI), pollen, and radiocarbon (14C) analyses. Our findings were correlated with and interpreted in the light of paleobotanical records deriving from archaeological sites and the newest bioclimatological models of the nearby areas. Sedimentological analysis document erosion and accumulation events which were influenced by more complex processes like climate change. Based on environmental historical and climatic data we aimed to reconstruct the environmental changes of forested areas in the Homoródi Hills.

This paper presents the results of grain-size analyses of an independently-dated loess/paleosol record dating back ca. 1 Ma from SW Hungary. The record follows an upward coarsening trend with a clear prevalence of coarse silts and fine sands. Variations are mainly controlled by fluctuations in sand input highlighting iterative changes in dust aerodynamics over the past 1 Ma in the source region found 50–100 km NW of our site. Based on our results regional factors influenced the intensity and nature of dust accumulation. Contrasting trends with the Chinese Loess Plateau in certain periods reflect a greater importance of the Atlantic region driving the evolution of nearby continental ice sheets. Proximity and expansion of these had significant impact on local wind field. Low topography of the surrounding mountain belts allowed for the intrusion of stronger cold winds, higher abrasion in the source region and transportation of coarser particles to the site from 700 to 450 ka. Another marked upward increase in grain-size from 400 ka can be linked to increasing continentality which along with tectonic activity resulted in a drop in the groundwater table in the source region and intensified erosion of formerly relatively stable surfaces bringing more coarse material to our site.

According to the findings of a complex radiocarbon dated sedimentological, geochemical, anthracological, phytolite, malacological study implemented on an open 1036 cm wind-blown sand, loess, sandy loess and fossil soils profile of western part of brickyard at Katymar village in Hungary. Increased boreal mixed-leaved forest steppe and temperate grassland cover characterized the interstadials in the SE Great Hungarian Plain during the terminal phase of MIS3 stage and MIS2 stage. These interstadials correlate well with the Dansgaard-Oeschger (DO) interstadials 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and the post LGM warm interval (DO1) seen in the Greenland ice core oxygen isotope records. Intervening cold phases, on the other hand, their start correlating with Heinrich event 1, 2, 3, 4 and the LGM. These data overall confirm that millennial scale climate variability during MIS3 and MIS2 stages had profound effect on the terrestrial ecosystems in the continental interior of SE Europe leading to periodic mixed-leaved boreal forest steppe within mosaic structure expansions in the interstadias and cold steppe, taiga and tundra like spots mosaic and mixed vegetation expansion in the stadial phases. 1400–1500 year long drier interstadial and humid, extended vegetation covered stadial periods interchanged at Katymar sequence, therefore the vegetation and fauna development was different from the Atlantic and Central European schemes and inferred an independent local and regional South Carpathian Basin trend.

The two loess-paleosol sequences of Villanykovesd and Maza preserved specific paleoecological information of the Late Pleistocene environmental conditions in SW-Hungary. For malacological examinations, sampling of 12 cm intervals were used; homogenous amounts of sediment (ca. 5 kg) were collected. During the malacological examinations, more than 27,000 specimens were identified. Interpreting their environmental and climatic demands the paleoclimate and paleoenvironment of the last 80,000 years could be reconstructed. The results of the malacological investigations of Villanykovesd sequence indicated 5 malacological zones (MZs) by the snail species’ dominant occurrence. All of the 5 MZs indicate mild climatic conditions with only one cooling phase. The mild climatic conditions were reconstructed by the high dominance of thermophilous species, especially Pupilla triplicata. This warmth loving, xerophilous and open vegetation preferring species is present in the entire sequence, which indicates a refuge area of P. triplicata around Villanykovesd. At the Maza sequence, 9 MZs could be allocated with mainly dominance of cold resistant species, indicating cooler climatic conditions than at Villanykovesd. The reason of the high ratio of cold resistant species and the high number of MZs could be the geographic exposition of the Maza sequence. The Maza sequence is located in a bench between higher and lower reliefs on the northern pediment area of Mecsek Mountains. This indicates the presence of a fluctuation zone for the snail species in the area of Maza sequence. The Late Pleistocene sequences possess different climatic and environmental conditions during same timeframe, therefore we highlight that the previously reconstructed mosaic-like environmental patters in the Carpathian Basin are real properties in the region.

The aim of this study is to identify the milestones of landscape evolution around the Ecse Mound (Karcag-Kunmadaras, Hortobágy National Park, Hungary) in the Holocene period by sedimentological and malacological analysis of strata underneath and within the body of the kurgan concerned, including that of the same characteristics of the artificially piled layers. An undisturbed core drilling was carried out and the sedimentological properties of both the mound and of the substrate baserock were revealed, analysis of which has been supported by three radiocarbon (AMS) measurements. The baserock formation during the last phase of the Ice Age, Middle and Upper Pleniglacial, and Late Glacial phases was followed by soil development in the Holocene, while the mound was constructed in two phases at the end of the Copper Age by the communities of the Pit Grave (Yamna or Ochre Grave) Culture. By publishing these preliminary data, it is also intended to draw attention to the need of focused research efforts by standardized methodology in kurgan research, in order to make the results of different studies consistent and comparable.

The Bodrogkeresztur loess-paleosol sequence in northeastern Hungary was investigated to improve our understanding of the paleoenvironmental conditions at the foothills of the Carpathians and their impact on the Gravettian population. The main part of the section is comprised of eolian deposits that enable the reconstruction of the paleoenvironmental conditions. This study comprises grain size, geochemical, color and rock magnetic analysis, as well as luminescence and radiocarbon dating. The chronological data place this section from later MIS 3 until present, but also suggest erosion of the sediment in the late MIS 2 and the (early) Holocene. Moreover, generally more humid conditions during late MIS3 and early MIS2 are observed, in comparison to other regions in the Carpathian Basin. Main dust source was most likely the Tisza floodplain, and the material was probably transported to the site from a northeastern wind direction. Increased weathering led to the formation of a well-developed MIS3 paleosol. The loess exhibits elevated values of frequency dependent magnetic susceptibility that highlight the relatively mild conditions during loess formation. Nevertheless, two loess layers with high sand abundance in the profile indicate colder and dryer conditions with increased eolian dynamics during short periods within MIS2. Finally, the Bodrogkeresztur section highlights the unique microclimatic conditions at the foothill areas of the Carpathian Basin, which may have offered a favorable environment for the Gravettian population.

Background & Aims: Rapid optimization of treatment algorithms and disease outcomes requires an objective measurement of disease activity in patients with Crohn’s disease (CD). Our aim was to evaluate the impact of rapid-access to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on treatment optimization, clinical decision-making and outcomes for CD patients in a specialized tertiary care for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients.Methods: A cohort of 75 referral CD patients (median age: 34, IQR: 25-43 years) who had underwent 90 fasttrack MR enterography (MRE) scans between January 2014 and June 2016 were retrospectively enrolled. The MRI results were compared to clinical activity scores and biomarkers (C-reactive protein). The immediate impact of fast-track MRI on clinical decision-making, including changes in medical therapy, the need of hospitalization and surgery were evaluated.Results: The location of CD was ileo-colonic in 61% of the patients with perianal fistulas in 56% and previous surgeries in 55%. The indication for fast-track MRI scans was active disease (clinical or biomarker activity) in 55.6%. The radiological activity (including mild radiological signs to severe lesions) was detected in 94% of cases. Significant/severe MRI activity was depicted in 68% of these patients. Correlation between MRI radiological activity and clinical disease activity or colonoscopy was moderate (kappa: 0.609 and 0.652). A change in therapeutic strategy was made in 94.1% of cases with severe MRI radiological activity vs. 50% of patients without severe MRI radiological activity (p=0.001). Significant/severe MRI activity was followed by higher surgery rates among patients with clinical disease activity (50% vs. 12.5%; p=0.013). MRI performed on patients with clinical and biomarker remission identified disease activity in a significantly smaller proportion.Conclusions: Fast-track MRI had a great impact on patient management in CD patients with clinical or biomarker activity, leading to better patient stratification and faster optimization of the therapy (medical or surgical), while MRI revealed previously undiagnosed disease activity only in a small proportion of patients in clinical remission.
