With an axially magnetized cylindrical ferrite rod inserted into a rectangular waveguide parallel to the E-field of the dominant (TE/sub 10/) mode, the electromagnetic field amplitudes inside the ferrite rod and the transmission and reflection coefficients are numerically obtained by means of a digital computer and their results are shown in figures. At resonance, the distributions of RF magnetization and electric field have good symmetrical patterns in the cross section of the rod. The experimental results of the transmission and reflection coefficients agree well with the theoretical values.

This paper introduces a distributed micro-computer system applied to the combustion control of batch-type annealing furnaces for cold strip coils. This system consists of 21 micro-computers : 4 supervisory, 2 interface, and 15 DDC controler. Each DDC computer has an advanced mathematical model which optimizes heat-up by predicting the internal temperatures of piled coils. By means of this system, fuel gas consumption has been reduced and the capability of process supervision and reliability have improved.

High resistivity silicon single crystals for radiation detectors were grown by the floating-zone (FZ) method with and without one-pass zone refining of ultra pure starting material obtained by the decomposition of monosilane gas. In this method, boron is removed from monosilane during gas generation. The main residual impurity is phosphorus from phosphine which is removed with zeolite A after distillation of monosilane. Photoluminescence analysis and an improved 4-point probe resistivity measuring method were used to evaluate the material.

A total of 20 patients underwent mitral valve replacement (MVR) with preservation of the papillary muscles (PM) and chordae tendineae (CT) with the object of maintaining left ventricular contractility and decreasing the risk of left ventricular rupture after surgery. The patients comprised of 8 males and 12 females whose ages ranged from 33 to 67 years. In 8 patients, the posterior leaflet was left in place and in 12, the CT to the anterior leaflet were also preserved by excision of the central portion and reattachment of the rest of the leaflet to the appropriate commissural regions. St. Jude Medical valves were exclusively employed as a substitute. Reasons for MVR were isolated MR in 12 cases, MRs in 5 and MSr in 3. There were one operative, one hospital and one late death respectively. Postoperative C.I. increased from 2.65 +/- 0.48 to 3.8 +/- 0.75 ml/min./M2 and LVEF increased from 55.1 +/- 11.4 to 63.4 +/- 13.4%. The area method showed marked improvement of segmental wall motion in anterolateral regions. Chordal shortening also disclosed improvement in long axis. Preservation of papillary muscles and chordae tendineae during MVR has been found to have a beneficial effect on postoperative left ventricular contractility.

Involvement of microtubules in the cellular action of vasopressin was studied by physiological and biochemical procedures. The inhibitory effect of 10(-4) M colchicine on the hydro-osmotic response of the toad bladder to 2 mM cyclic AMP was completely blocked by an increase in the concentration of calcium in the serosal bathing medium from 1 to 8 mM. Most of the colchicine-binding activity of extracts of the bladder epithelial cells was recovered by DEAE-Sephadex chromatography in a procedure similar to that used to isolate tubulin of bovine brain. Sodium dodecyl sulfate urea and urea gel electrophoresis of the DEAE-Sephadex fraction from the bladder epithelial cells yielded bands that corresponded to those of bovine brain tubulin. When 8 mM CaCl2 was present in an incubation mixture, the binding of colchicine to tubulin from the bladder epithelial cells and bovine brain was significantly inhibited. However, 1 mM CaCl2 did not affect the binding of colchicine to tubulin. Although the present study supports the concept that microtubules and calcium play an important role in the cellular action of vasopressin on the toad urinary bladder, the mechanism by which calcium blocks the inhibitory effect of colchicine on the hydro-osmotic response to cyclic AMP could not be elucidated.

The percentage and absolute numbers of thymos-dependent (T) and thymos-independent (B) peripheral blood lymphocytes, the in vitro response of lymphocytes to phytohemagglutinin (PHA), and the sensitization with 2,4dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) was studied in 26 patients with hyperthyroidism due to Graves' disease. The results showed a normal percentage of both T and B cells and increased absoluted numbers of total lymphocytes in patients compared with 30 healthy controls. The in vitro response to PHA was normal in most patients with the exception of 5 of them who showed an impaired response. All patients developed a reaction of delayed hypersensitivity to DNCB. Our study indicated that there is no general abnormality in cell-mediated immunity in Graves' disease.

An atypical huge patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) associated with extreme pulmonary hypertension in a 6-month old female infant was reported. The left 3rd intercostal thoracotomy revealed huge PDA which has an appearance of pulmonary-ductus-descending aorta-trunk (PDDT) on the left side. The right side of the ductus continued to the aortic arch without demarcation between the ductus and the aorta. The median sternotomy clarified the ascending aorta, normal aortic arch, and main pulmonary artery. However, the top of the main pulmonary artery seemed to be fused with the aortic arch. The diagnosis of distal type of aortopulmonary window with wide communication was made and the total circulatory arrest with deep hypothermia and the intracavitary patching for separation of systemic and pulmonary blood flow seemed to be required for the complete repair. Total repair was decided to be postponed one week later and the chest was closed. The patient died of multi-organ failure originating from acute respiratory failure 23 days after exploratory thoracotomy without being repaired. Postmortem examination revealed a huge PDA freely communicating with the ascending aorta and the aortic arch. This is a report of an atypical huge PDA rarely seen and the conventional division or ligation is unfeasible. The circulatory arrest with deep hypothermia and intracavitary patching are obligatory for the surgical repair.

From October 1976 to June 1986, 12 patients with corrected transposition of the great arteries (c-TGA) underwent repair of associated intracardiac defects. Ventricular septal defect (VSD) was closed by the method of de Leval in 7 patients, pulmonary outflow tract obstruction was relieved by valvotomy in 2, and bypassed by an external valved conduit in 6. The systemic atrioventricular (A-V) valve was replaced in 2. There was one operative death, giving a mortality rate of 8%. None of the patients developed complete heart block. The ejection fraction of the systemic ventricle was impaired (29-38%), particularly after ventriculotomy of this chamber. Surgical repair of intracardiac defects associated with c-TGA currently can be performed with acceptable risk, and de Leval's method for VSD closure is recommended; but the possibility of the postoperative development of systemic ventricular dysfunction and A-V valve regurgitation necessitates careful follow-up.
