156. STELLAR POPULATIONS OF LYMAN BREAK GALAXIES AT z ≃1-3 IN THE HST/WFC3 EARLY RELEASE SCIENCE OBSERVATIONS.

Abstract

We analyze the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z ≃ 1-3 selected using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST)Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) UVIS channel filters. These HST/WFC3 observations cover about 50 arcmin2 in the GOODS-South field as a part of the WFC3 Early Release Science program. These LBGs at z ≃ 1-3 are selected using dropout selection criteria similar to high-redshift LBGs. The deep multiband photometry in this field is used to identify best-fit SED models, from which we infer the following results: (1) the photometric redshift estimate of these dropout-selected LBGs is accurate to within few percent; (2) the UV spectral slope β is redder than at high redshift (z > 3), where LBGs are less dusty; (3) on average, LBGs at z ≃ 1-3 are massive, dustier, and more highly star forming, compared to LBGs at higher redshifts with similar luminosities (0.1L " ≲ L ≲ 2.5L "), though their median values are similar within 1σ uncertainties. This could imply that identical dropout selection technique, at all redshifts, finds physically similar galaxies; and (4) the stellar masses of these LBGs are directly proportional to their UV luminosities with a logarithmic slope of ∼0.46, and star formation rates are proportional to their stellar masses with a logarithmic slope of ∼0.90. These relations hold true-within luminosities probed in this study-for LBGs from z ≃ 1.5 to 5. The star-forming galaxies selected using other color-based techniques show similar correlations at z ≃ 2, but to avoid any selection biases, and for direct comparison with LBGs at z > 3, a true Lyman break selection at z ≃ 2 is essential. The future HST UV surveys, both wider and deeper, covering a large luminosity range are important to better understand LBG properties and their evolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The authors have used a combination of monochromatized x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry to develop a protocol for determining bulk film stoichiometry and charge state of Sr2FeMoO6 epitaxial films These studies identify an optimum ion sputtering process for removing surface contaminants while avoiding preferential sputtering of film constituents or alteration of their characteristic valence states. For Sr2FeMoO6, low energy (500 eV), glancing incidence Ar+ sputtering for short (tens of seconds) periods is successful in achieving stoichiometric compositions and characteristic charge states of the film constituents. The evolution of composition and valence state with sputtering provides a guide to measure stoichiometry and charge state of complex oxide thin films in general. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) has been strongly implicated in mechanisms of persistent pain states. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether the NMDAR NR-1, a key subunit in regulation of NMDAR channel complex is directly contributing to the onset and propagation of peripheral nerve injury-induced allodynia and whether N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) signaling interacts with spinal chemokine (chemotactic cytokines) expression and glial activation. We used genetically engineered male mice that had their normal NR1 gene knocked out and expressed a modified NR1 gene at either normal level (NR1 +/+, wild type) or at a low level (NR1± , knock down). Each mouse underwent a peripheral nerve injury in which the lumbar 5 spinal segment (L5) nerve was transected. Mechanical allodynia was assessed using 0.008 and 0.015 g von Frey filaments on days 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, 17 and 21 post-surgery. Mice were killed on day 21 and the harvested L5 spinal cord was analyzed for chemokine expression using RNAse protection assay. In a separate study, glial expression using immunohistochemistry was assessed in both groups 7 days following peripheral nerve injury. The NR1± mice displayed decreased mechanical allodynia in comparison to their wild type counterparts. However, even with dramatically impaired NMDA receptor signaling, there was still evidence of tactile hypersensitivity. Using the RPA analysis, we found decreases in mRNA chemokine expression in the NR1± mice as compared with NR1+/+ mice. There were no apparent differences in microglial or astrocytic expression between the wild type and knock down mice. These data provide important insights into the cascade of events involving the dynamic interaction between NMDAR function and spinal chemokine and glial production in neuropathic pain states. 163. Epoprostenol sodium (prostacyclin) infusion in acute myocardial infarction.

Abstract

Epoprostenol (prostacyclin) is a potent inhibitor of platelet aggregation and causes relaxation of vascular smooth muscle. These effects may be beneficial in patients with acute myocardial infarction. The effect of epoprostenol infusion in patients with acute myocardial infarction was evaluated in a randomised double blind study of 45 patients with evidence of myocardial infarction of less than 16 hours' duration. The patients were given a 72 hour infusion of epoprostenol (23) or placebo (22). The maximum dose was 5 ng/kg/min. The mean time to treatment was 8.3 hours (range 3.8-15.9 hours). The mean dose was 4.9 ng/kg/min. The patients were followed until day 30. No significant differences were found between the groups in mortality, development of congestive heart failure, cardiogenic shock, arrhythmias, recurrent chest pain, reinfarction, peak creatine kinase concentration, or the time taken to attain peak creatine kinase concentration. No significant difference in baseline ejection fraction was noted between groups, and no significant change in ejection fraction occurred within each group or between groups. The only significant side effect was the development of facial flushing in the epoprostenol group. In this pilot study epoprostenol was well tolerated by patients with acute myocardial infarction. No benefit from epoprostenol could be demonstrated at the dose range used when the drug was administered within 16 hours of the onset of symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

The ability of Enterobacter agglomerans to transform naturally occurring nucleosides into nucleotides has been utilized to transform newly synthesized pyrimidine acyclonucleosides into the corresponding acyclonucleotides. Unselected bacteria were used as the source of nucleoside phosphotransferase, the phosphate group donor being 4-nitrophenyl phosphate in the presence of Zn ions. Abstract

The authors report on the depth-resolved cathodoluminescence spectroscopy studies of the surface, bulk, and interface-localized electronic states in the band gap of epitaxial BiFeO3 thin films. The BiFeO3 films show a near band edge emission at 2.7 eV and defect emissions at energies varying from 2.0 to 2.5 eV. The overall results clearly suggest that the electronic structure, especially the defect states and their spatial distributions, of BiFeO3 films are strongly dependent on the growth conditions and method, stoichiometry, and strain, so that understanding and controlling them are crucial to optimize BiFeO3 film properties. Abstract

We present the results of a systematic search for Ly alpha emitters (LAEs) at 6 less than or similar to z less than or similar to 7.6 using the HST WFC3 Infrared Spectroscopic Parallel (WISP) Survey. Our total volume over this redshift range is similar to 8 x 10(5) Mpc(3), comparable to many of the narrowband surveys despite their larger area coverage. We find two LAEs at z = 6.38 and 6.44 with line luminosities of L-Lya similar to 4.7 x 10(43) erg s(-1), putting them among the brightest LAEs discovered at these redshifts. Taking advantage of the broad spectral coverage of WISP, we are able to rule out almost all lower-redshift contaminants. The WISP LAEs have a high number density of 7.7 x 10(-6) Mpc (3). We argue that the LAEs reside in megaparsec-scale ionized bubbles that allow the Ly alpha photons to redshift out of resonance before encountering the neutral intergalactic medium. We discuss possible ionizing sources and conclude that the observed LAEs alone are not sufficient to ionize the bubbles.

Abstract

[abridged] New near-infrared surveys, using the HST, offer an unprecedented opportunity to study rest-frame optical galaxy morphologies at z>1 and to calibrate automated morphological parameters that will play a key role in classifying future massive datasets like EUCLID or LSST. We study automated parameters (e.g. CAS, Gini, M20) of massive galaxies at 11: bulge-dominated systems have systematically higher concentration and Gini coefficients and are less asymmetric and rounder than disk-dominated galaxies. However, at z>1, galaxies are, on average, 50% more asymmetric and have Gini and M20 values that are 10% higher and 20% lower respectively. In bulge-dominated galaxies, morphological parameters derived from the rest-frame UV and optical wavelengths are well correlated; however late-type galaxies exhibit higher asymmetry and clumpiness when measured in the rest-frame UV. We find that broad morphological classes (e.g. bulge vs. disk dominated) can be distinguished using parameters with high (80%) purity and completeness of 80%. In a similar vein, irregular disks and mergers can also be distinguished from bulges and regular disks with a contamination lower than 20%. However, mergers cannot be differentiated from the irregular morphological class using these parameters, due to increasingly asymmetry of non-interacting late-type galaxies at z>1. Sólo quedan reflejados el primero, los pertenecientes a la UAM y el colectivo, Background: Although high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and non-HDL cholesterol have opposite associations with coronary heart disease, multi-country reports of lipid trends only use total cholesterol (TC). Our aim was to compare trends in total, HDL and non-HDL cholesterol and the total-to-HDL cholesterol ratio in Asian and Western countries. Methods: We pooled 458 population-based studies with 82.1 million participants in 23 Asian and Western countries. We estimated changes in mean total, HDL and non-HDL cholesterol and mean total-to-HDL cholesterol ratio by country, sex and age group. Results: Since ∼1980, mean TC increased in Asian countries. In Japan and South Korea, the TC rise was due to rising HDL cholesterol, which increased by up to 0.17 mmol/L per decade in Japanese women; in China, it was due to rising non-HDL cholesterol. TC declined in Western countries, except in Polish men. The decline was largest in Finland and Norway, at ∼0.4 mmol/L per decade. The decline in TC in most Western countries was the net effect of an increase in HDL cholesterol and a decline in non-HDL cholesterol, with the HDL cholesterol increase largest in New Zealand and Switzerland. Mean total-to-HDL cholesterol ratio declined in Japan, South Korea and most Western countries, by as much as ∼0.7 per decade in Swiss men (equivalent to ∼26% decline in coronary heart disease risk per decade). The ratio increased in China.
