Importance Knowledge and attitude influence compliance and individuals’ practices. The risk and protective factors associated with high compliance to these preventive measures are critical to enhancing pandemic preparedness. Objective This survey aims to assess differences in mental health, knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of preventive measures for COVID-19 amongst healthcare professionals (HCP) and non-healthcare professionals. Design Multi-national cross-sectional study was carried out using electronic surveys between May-June 2020. Setting Multi-national survey was distributed across 36 countries through social media, word-of-mouth, and electronic mail. Participants Participants ≥21 years working in healthcare and non-healthcare related professions. Main outcome Risk factors determining the difference in KAP towards personal hygiene and social distancing measures during COVID-19 amongst HCP and non-HCP. Results HCP were significantly more knowledgeable on personal hygiene (AdjOR 1.45, 95% CI -1.14 to 1.83) and social distancing (AdjOR 1.31, 95% CI -1.06 to 1.61) compared to non-HCP. They were more likely to have a positive attitude towards personal hygiene and 1.5 times more willing to participate in the contact tracing app. There was high compliance towards personal hygiene and social distancing measures amongst HCP. HCP with high compliance were 1.8 times more likely to flourish and more likely to have a high sense of emotional (AdjOR 1.94, 95% CI (1.44 to 2.61), social (AdjOR 2.07, 95% CI -1.55 to 2.78), and psychological (AdjOR 2.13, 95% CI (1.59–2.85) well-being. Conclusion and relevance While healthcare professionals were more knowledgeable, had more positive attitudes, their higher sense of total well-being was seen to be more critical to enhance compliance. Therefore, focusing on the well-being of the general population would help to enhance their compliance towards the preventive measures for COVID-19.

Interspecific and intergeneric crosses were performed between species in the genera Baptisia and Thermopsis with the goal of creating hybrids with the best qualities of both parents. Baptisia australis (L.) R. Br. was used as both the male and female parent in intergeneric crosses. Thermopsis chinensis Benth. ex S. Moore, T. lupinoides (L.) Link, and T. villosa Fernald & B.G. Schub. were used as male and female parents in both interspecific and intergeneric crosses. Pollen was collected from B. alba (L.) Vent., B. bracteata Muhl. ex Elliott, and B. lanceolata (Walt.) Ell. and used to make interspecific and intergeneric crosses. Putative hybrids were obtained from both interspecific and intergeneric crosses. Interspecific crosses produced a higher percentage of pollinations resulting in seed set and the number of seeds per pollination than intergeneric crosses. Morphological differences between parent species and progeny were evident in putative hybrids resulting from intergeneric crosses between T. villosa and B. australis and T. villosa and B. alba. Most putative hybrids bloomed during the second year after germination. Because seedlings could be obtained from both interspecific and intergeneric crosses, hybrids within and between the genera Baptisia and Thermopsis are feasible. The Fabaceae family contains 670–750 genera and 18,000–19,000 species. Baptisia (commonly called false or wild indigo) and Thermopsis (commonly named false lupine) of the Fabaceae belong to the tribe Thermopsidae, which comprises 46 species in six genera. All species in Thermopsis and Baptisia are herbaceous; they are the only two genera in Thermopsidae that do not have woody species. Thermopsis contains 23 species and has a wide-spread distribution with species endemic to Asia and much of temperate North America. Although Thermopsis is considered to have originated in central Asia, T. chinensis Benth. ex S. Moore and T. fabacea (Pallas) Candole are thought to have originated in North America and migrated over the Bering Land Strait to Asia. Three Thermopsis species, T. fraxinifolia Nutt. ex M.A. Curtis, T. mollis (Michx.) M.A. Curtis ex A. Gray, and T. villosa Fernald & B.G. Schub., are native to the southeastern United States. Baptisia contains 15–17 species that are endemic to the southeastern and midwestern United States.

Hibiscus moscheutos L. is an herbaceous hibiscus native to eastern North America that has been a popular landscape and container plant exhibiting large and colorful flowers in the summer. However, unsightly fruit develop and remain on the stalks at the end of the blooming season, which greatly decreases the ornamental value. Thus, breeding for sterility was attempted through ploidy level manipulation to reduce formation and growth of seed stalks, and to improve blooming vigor and longevity. Colchicine and oryzalin were used as mitotic inhibitors to induce tetraploid breeding lines that could be used to develop sterile triploids. Germinated seedlings of ‘Luna Red’ were soaked in three concentrations of each doubling agent for three different durations. Exposure to a low concentration of colchicine solution for a long time or to a low concentration of oryzalin for a short period was found to be effective in yielding a high number of tetraploids with a low rate of mortality. Triploids were obtained from the traditional method of crossing tetraploids with diploids. Triploid and tetraploid plants showed a decrease in height with a more compact form. Leaves of tetraploid plants were more ruffled, with an increase in overall leaf thickness, but were not different from leaves of diploids and triploids in regard to leaf mass per area (LMA). Triploid plants bloomed longer but had smaller flowers than diploid plants. Although the whole planting was infected by aerial phytophthora, diploid, tetraploid, and triploid plants were significantly different in their tolerances: all diploid branches were infected, but only a minor infection occurred on one triploid branch, and the transmission remained slow. Flowers of tetraploid plants failed to produce pollen, whereas flowers of triploid plants produced only nonviable pollen grains and fruits aborted after pollination, which led to infertility of induced triploids.

Namen magistrskega dela je bil zasnovati primer pouka izven učilnice za predmet zgodovine. Izbrali smo učno pot, ki se osredotoča na lokalno zgodovino in spoznavanje lokalnega okolja. Trasa učne poti je postavljena na območje Kraškega roba in nižje ležeče Bržanije. Območje je s svojo naravno in kulturno dediščino predstavljeno v prvem delu naloge. Sledijo pedagoški poudarki, namenjeni učiteljem, ki pripravljajo pouk izven učilnice, ter predstavitev vrst pouka izven učilnice. Pred terenskim pregledom območja smo s pomočjo relevantnih učnih načrtov postavili cilje učne poti po Kraškem robu. Predstavljena je tudi terenska analiza pripravljene poti in pripravljeno gradivo. Naloge na poti so namenjene učencem tretje triade osnovne šole. Ostali obiskovalci območja lahko preko geografskega informacijskega sistema na trasi učne poti dostopajo do informacij o lokalni naravni in kulturni dediščini. Magistrsko delo predstavlja izvedbo pouka na učni poti in evalvacijo učne poti. Zadnje poglavje opisuje mnenje lokalnih skupnosti o učni poti in morebitne težave, na katere lahko naletimo pri postavitvi učne poti. Magistrsko delo poudarja pomen raziskovanja lokalne naravne in kulturne dediščine. The purpose of the master's thesis is to design an example of class outside the classroom for the subject of history. We have chosen an educational trail that focuses on local history and local environment. The route of the educational trail is set in the area of the Karst edge and the lower lying Bržanija. The area is presented with its natural and cultural heritage in the first part of the master's thesis, followed by pedagogical highlights intended for teachers who prepare classes outside the classroom, as well as presentation of types of classes outside the classroom. The objectives of the educational trail along the Karst edge were set up using relevant curricula prior to the field inspection of the area. The field analysis of the chosen path and study material is presented. The tasks on the way are intended for pupils of the third triad of elementary school. Other visitors to the area can access information on the local natural and cultural heritage through the geographic information system on the educational trail. The first class performed on the educational trail and the evaluation of the educational trail is also presented in the master's thesis. In the last chapter we present the opinion of local communities about the educational trail and possible problems that we may encounter when setting up the educational trail. The master's thesis emphasizes the importance of exploring the local natural and cultural heritage.

S pridobljeno ustrezno pedagoško izobrazbo lahko geograf poučuje poleg geografije še nekatere druge predmete v osnovnih in srednjih šolah. Primer takega predmeta je tudi strokovni modul Meteorologija in oceanografija, ki je del strokovnega programa Plovbni tehnik. V magistrskem delu želimo raziskati možnosti za uporabo geografske metode poučevanja pri tem predmetu. Poudarek je na praktičnem pouku, delu strokovnega modula, ki je v osnovi podoben terenskemu in kabinetnemu delu, ki ga izvajamo pri geografiji, zato smo pripravili terenske in kabinetne vaje v skladu s kurikularno dokumentacijo predmeta. Pregledali smo relevantno literaturo, iz katere smo črpali teoretično osnovo za vaje. Didaktično so vaje osnovane na principu geografskega in terenskega dela in na sodobnih pedagoških priporočilih formativnega spremljanja. Želeli smo oblikovati vaje, ki jih je možno izvesti pri vseh predmetih, povezanih z meteorologijo in oceanografijo, tudi pri pouku geografije. Vaje smo izvedli v učilnici z dijaki tretjega letnika programa Plovbni tehnik. Po izvedbi smo naredili evalvacijo in samoevalvacijo opravljenega dela, ki sta pokazali, da so vaje primerne za aktivno uporabo pri pouku. Pri dijakih smo lahko skozi leto spremljali razvoj njihovih sposobnosti pri praktičnem delu. Pozitiven odziv dijakov, doseženi učni cilji in pridobljene kompetence so spodbuda za učitelje geografije pri vključitvi terenskih in kabinetnih komponent v pouk geografije in ostalih predmetov. Geographer with completed pedagogical studies is qualified for the work of a teacher school for several subjects at various educational levels (namely elementary school and high school). One of these subjects is Meteorology and oceanography, which is a part of curriculum in Navigation officer program. In the following master thesis we have studied the opportunities for implementation of geographic didactic method in teaching subject Meteorology and oceanography. We have emphasized practical education, similar to field and cabinet work that is often used when teaching geography. The field and cabinet work was prepared in accordance with relevant curricular documentation. Theoretical basis for the lessons was acquired from specialized literature. The didactical method used is composed of the geographical method, frequently used field work method and modern pedagogical principle – formative assessment. Our aim was to prepare practical exercises, relevant for all subjects connected with meteorological or oceanographic topics. The prepared lessons were given to the 3rd year students, and evaluated after execution. The results of the evaluation have shown that the practical lessons are suitable for intended use in school. Positive feedback of the students as well as reached learning objectives, encourage geography teachers to include field and cabinet work into their programs.

Controlling the elongation of ornamental plants is commonly needed for shipping and aesthetic purposes. Drought stress can be used to limit elongation, and is an environmentally friendly alternative to plant growth regulators (PGRs). However, growers can be reluctant to expose plants to drought stress because they do not want to negatively affect overall plant quality and marketability. Knowing how and when stem elongation is affected by water availability will help to increase our understanding of how elongation can be controlled without reducing plant quality. Rooted Hibiscus acetosella Welw. ex Hiern. cuttings were grown in a growth chamber set to a 12-hour photoperiod at 25 °C. Two plants of similar size were used for each replication of the study to compare growth under well-watered and drought-stressed conditions. Time lapse photography was used to determine the diurnal patterns of elongation over the course of the replications. Evapotranspiration was measured using load cells. Well-watered and drought-stressed plants had similar diurnal patterns of elongation and evapotranspiration, demonstrating that both follow circadian rhythms and are not just responding to environmental conditions. Stem elongation was greatest at night and coincided with evapotranspiration decreases, with greatest elongation shortly after the onset of darkness. Elongation was minimal between 800 and 1000 hr when evapotranspiration increases. During the drought-stress portion of the replications, elongation of drought-stressed plants was 44% less than well-watered plants. Final plant height and shoot dry weight for the drought-stressed plants were 21% and 30% less than well-watered plants, respectively. Total leaf area, number of leaves, and number of new visible internodes were greater for well-watered plants than drought-stressed plants. Average length of visible internodes and leaf size were similar for drought-stressed and well-watered plants. If growers want to use drought stress for elongation control, they should ensure that plants are drought stressed before the onset of and during the dark period, when most elongation occurs.

Four species of Dissotis and three species of Tibouchina, two genera of the Melastomataceae family, were crossed in an attempt to create interspecific and intergeneric hybrids. Intergeneric crosses set seed at a rate of 18.1% and interspecific crosses had a 32.3% rate of seed set. Germination was extremely poor, with only four crosses having germinated seed. Crosses produced 31 seedlings. Three of the seedlings were from intergeneric crosses between Dissotis canescens and Tibouchina lepidota. Interspecific crosses produced 25 seedlings from crosses between Dissotis princeps and Dissotis rotundifolia and three seedlings from crosses between D. canescens and D. princeps. The prognosis for conventional breeding for species in Dissotis and Tibouchina is poor due to low seed set, poor germination, and slow growth of progeny.

We present a case of a patient with known papillary thyroid carcinoma presenting with overt upper gastrointestinal bleeding from a metastatic gastric mass. The gastric mass was diagnosed through transnasal endoscopy with tissue biopsies, revealing papillary thyroid carcinoma cells on histopathological studies. Bleeding was persistent despite standard medical therapy. Chemoembolisation of the major feeding vessels of such tumour provided resolution of bleeding.

A detailed investigation into the intestinal lifestyle of Escherichia coli multilocus sequence type 131 revealed that these globally dominant multidrug-resistant pathogens use type 1 fimbriae to effectively colonize the mammalian gut and persist long term., Background Epidemiological studies point to the gut as a key reservoir of multidrug resistant Escherichia coli multilocus sequence type 131 (ST131), a globally dominant pathogenic clone causing urinary tract and bloodstream infections. Here we report a detailed investigation of its intestinal lifestyle. Methods Clinical ST131 isolates and type 1 fimbriae null mutants were assessed for colonization of human intestinal epithelia and in mouse intestinal colonization models. Mouse gut tissue underwent histologic analysis for pathology and ST131 localization. Key findings were corroborated in mucus-producing human cell lines and intestinal biopsy specimens. Results ST131 strains adhered to and invaded human intestinal epithelial cells more than probiotic and commensal strains. The reference ST131 strain EC958 established persistent intestinal colonization in mice, and expression of type 1 fimbriae mediated higher colonization levels. Bacterial loads were highest in the distal parts of the mouse intestine and did not cause any obvious pathology. Further analysis revealed that EC958 could bind to both mucus and underlying human intestinal epithelia. Conclusions ST131 strains can efficiently colonize the mammalian gut and persist long term. Type 1 fimbriae enhance ST131 intestinal colonization, suggesting that mannosides, currently developed as therapeutics for bladder infections and Crohn’s disease, could also be used to limit intestinal ST131 reservoirs.

Examination of lipid accumulation in this organism can be carried out by fixative dyes or label-free methods. Fixative stains like Nile red and oil red O are inexpensive, reliable ways to quantitatively measure lipid levels and to qualitatively observe lipid distribution across tissues, respectively. Moreover, these stains allow for high-throughput screening of various lipid metabolism genes and pathways. Additionally, their hydrophobic nature facilitates lipid solubility, reduces interaction with surrounding tissues, and prevents dissociation into the solvent. Though these methods are effective at examining general lipid content, they do not provide detailed information about the chemical composition and diversity of lipid deposits. For these purposes, label-free methods such as GC-MS and CARS microscopy are better suited, their costs notwithstanding.

Background The standard of care for treatment of lymphedema is manual lymphatic drainage and compression therapy, which is time intensive and requires a life-long commitment. Autologous lymph node transfer is a microsurgical treatment in which a vascularized lymph node flap is harvested with its blood supply and transferred to the lymphedematous region to assist with lymph fluid clearance. An ideal donor lymph node site minimizes the risk of iatrogenic lymphedema and other donor site morbidity. To address this, we have used jejunal mesentery lymph nodes and omental flaps and hypothesize that the mesoappendix, as a “spare part,” may be an ideal autologous lymph node transfer donor site. Methods In this Institutional Review Board–approved study, 25 mesoappendix pathology specimens resected for benign disease underwent gross pathologic examination for the presence of lymph nodes and measurement of the appendicular artery and vein caliber and length. Results A single lymph node was present in two of 25 specimens (8%). Mean arterial and vein calibers at the point of ligation were 0.87 ± 0.44 mm and 0.86 ± 0.48 mm (range 0.30-2.2 mm and 0.25-2.2 mm), respectively. Mean arterial and vein length was 1.70 ± 1.06 cm and 1.84 ± 1.09 cm (range 0.8-4.5 cm for each), respectively. Conclusions The mesoappendix rarely contains a lymph node. The artery and vein calibers of 46% of the specimens were greater than 0.8 mm, the minimum caliber preferred for microsurgical anastomosis. If transplantation of a vascularized lymph node for the treatment of lymphedema is desired, the mesoappendix is inconsistent in providing adequate lymph nodes.

Item does not contain fulltext In a study of elderly AML patients treated with the hypomethylating agent decitabine (DAC), we noted a surprisingly favorable outcome in the (usually very unfavorable) subgroup with two or more autosomal monosomies (MK2+) within a complex karyotype (Lubbert et al., Haematologica 97:393-401, 2012). We now analyzed 206 myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) patients (88 % of 233 patients randomized in the EORTC/GMDSSG phase III trial 06011, 61 of them with RAEBt, i.e. AML by WHO) with cytogenetics informative for MK status.. Endpoints are the following: complete/partial (CR/PR) and overall response rate (ORR) and progression-free (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Cytogenetic subgroups are the following: 63 cytogenetically normal (CN) patients, 143 with cytogenetic abnormalities, 73 of them MK-negative (MK-), and 70 MK-positive (MK+). These MK+ patients could be divided into 17 with a single autosomal monosomy (MK1) and 53 with at least two monosomies (MK2+). ORR with DAC in CN patients: 36.1 %, in MK- patients: 16.7 %, in MK+ patients: 43.6 % (MK1: 44.4 %, MK2+ 43.3 %). PFS was prolonged by DAC compared to best supportive care (BSC) in the CN (hazard ratio (HR) 0.55, 99 % confidence interval (CI), 0.26; 1.15, p = 0.03) and MK2+ (HR 0.50; 99 % CI, 0.23; 1.06, p = 0.016) but not in the MK-, MK+, and MK1 subgroups. OS was not improved by DAC in any subgroup. In conclusion, we demonstrate for the first time in a randomized phase III trial that high-risk MDS patients with complex karyotypes harboring two or more autosomal monosomies attain encouraging responses and have improved PFS with DAC treatment compared to BSC.

Dissotis rotundifolia (Sm.) Triana and Tibouchina fothergillae ×pilosa are members of the Melastomataceae family with high ornamental potential. The growth habits of these species are not ideal for nursery production or shipping. D. rotundifolia grows rapidly and needs frequent pruning. T. fothergillae ×pilosa has an open growth habit and could benefit from a more compact form. The effect of the plant growth regulator (PGR) paclobutrazol on D. rotundifolia and T. fothergillae ×pilosa was assessed to determine whether it could produce plants with a more compact growth habit. Paclobutrazol was applied as a drench and a spray. Drench application was more effective in reducing the growth of both species. Spray application was effective in reducing the growth of D. rotundifolia but was not effective on T. fothergillae ×pilosa. Neither drench nor spray application delayed or reduced flowering in D. rotundifolia. T. fothergillae ×pilosa did not flower during the study. For both D. rotundifolia and T. fothergillae ×pilosa, neither drench nor spray application had an effect on root dry weight. Low-to-medium dosages were effective at controlling plant growth in D. rotundifolia and T. fothergillae ×pilosa without adverse effects on plants. Drench treatments have more persistent effects on plant growth than spray treatments.

Excessive irrigation and leaching are of increasing concern in container plant production. It can also necessitate multiple fertilizer applications, which is costly for growers. Our objective was to determine whether fertilizer and irrigation water can be applied more efficiently to reduce leachate volume and nutrient content without negatively impacting aboveground growth of Gardenia jasminoides ‘MAGDA I’. Plants were fertilized with one of three rates of a controlled-release fertilizer (subplots) (Florikan 18–6–8, 9–10 month release; 18.0N–2.6P–6.6K) [100 (40 g/plant), 50 (20 g/plant), and 25% of bag rate (10 g/plant)] and grown in 5.4-L containers outside for 137 days. Soil moisture sensor-controlled, automated irrigation was used to provide plants with one of four irrigation volumes (whole plots) (66, 100, 132, or 165 mL) at each irrigation event. All plants were irrigated when the control treatment (66 mL irrigation volume, 100% fertilizer treatment) reached a volumetric water content (VWC) of 0.35 m3·m−3. Plants in the different irrigation treatments were irrigated for 2, 3, 4, or 5 minutes, thus applying 66, 100, 132, or 165 mL/plant in the different irrigation treatments. Fertilizer rate had a greater effect on aboveground growth than irrigation volume with the 25% fertilizer rate resulting in significantly lower shoot dry weight (18.7 g/plant) than the 50% and 100% rates (25.3 and 27.3 g/plant respectively). Growth index was also lowest in the 25% fertilizer rate. Leachate volume varied greatly during the growing season due to rainfall and irrigation volume effects on leachate were most evident during the third, eighth, and ninth biweekly leachate collections, during which there was minimal or no rainfall. For these collections the control treatment of 66 mL resulted in minimal leachate (less than 130 mL over the 2-week leachate collection period), whereas leachate volume increased with increasing irrigation volumes. Pore water electrical conductivity (EC), leachate EC, NO3-N content, and PO4-P content were all highest with the 100% fertilizer rate, with the 66 mL irrigation treatment having the highest leachate EC for all fertilizer treatments. Cumulative leachate volumes for the 66 and 100 mL irrigation treatments were unaffected by fertilizer rate, whereas the 132 and 165 mL had greater leaching at the 25% fertilizer rate. Lower irrigation volumes resulted in reduced water and nutrient leaching and higher leachate EC. The higher leachate EC was the result of higher concentration of nutrients in less volume of leachate. The results of this study suggest that a combination of reduced fertilizer rates (up to 50%) and more efficient irrigation can be used to produce salable plants with reduced leaching and thus less environmental impact.

Sustainable use of water resources is of increasing importance in container plant production as a result of decreasing water availability and an increasing number of laws and regulations regarding nursery runoff. Soil moisture sensor-controlled, automated irrigation can be used to irrigate when substrate volumetric water content (θ) drops below a threshold, improving irrigation efficiency by applying water only as needed. We compared growth of two Gardenia jasminoides cultivars, slow-growing and challenging ‘Radicans’ and easier, fast-growing ‘August Beauty’, at various θ thresholds. Our objective was to determine how irrigation can be applied more efficiently without negatively affecting plant quality, allowing for cultivar-specific guidelines. Soil moisture sensor-controlled, automated irrigation was used to maintain θ thresholds of 0.20, 0.30, 0.40, or 0.50 m3·m−3. Growth of both cultivars was related to θ threshold, and patterns of growth were similar in both Watkinsville and Tifton, GA. High mortality was observed at the 0.20-m3·m−3 threshold with poor root establishment resulting from the low irrigation volume. Height, width, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, and leaf size were greater for the 0.40 and 0.50 m3·m−3 than the 0.20 and 0.30-m3·m−3 θ thresholds. Irrigation volume increased with increasing θ thresholds for both cultivars. For ‘August Beauty’, cumulative irrigation volume ranged from 0.96 to 63.21 L/plant in Tifton and 1.89 to 87.9 L/plant in Watkinsville. For ‘Radicans’, cumulative irrigation volume ranged from 1.32 to 126 L/plant in Tifton and from 1.38 to 261 L/plant in Watkinsville. There was a large irrigation volume difference between the 0.40 and 0.50-m3·m−3 θ thresholds with little additional growth, suggesting that the additional irrigation applied led to overirrigation and leaching. Bud and flower number of ‘Radicans’ were greatest for the 0.40-m3·m−3 θ threshold, indicating that overirrigation can reduce flowering. The results of this study show that growth of the different G. jasminoides cultivars responded similarly to θ threshold at both locations. Similarities in growth and differences in irrigation volume at the 0.40 and 0.50-m3·m−3 θ thresholds show that more efficient irrigation can be used without negatively impacting growth.
