Genetic connectivity studies can inform the design of mitigation strategies used in environmental management. However, the expense of developing species-specific molecular markers and collecting samples at appropriate spatial and temporal scales can be prohibitive. Using archived material and existing molecular markers may provide a cost-effective way to assess population connectivity. Genetic connectivity studies are increasingly in demand in the deep sea in response to mounting anthropogenic pressures, including seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) mining. The feasibility of using archived material was assessed using the New Zealand-endemic vent mussel Gigantidas gladius, which inhabits areas licensed for the prospecting phase of SMS mining. Four molecular markers were tested, but only one (mitochondrial COI) provided suitable sequences. Of 942 specimens, only 150 individuals were informative, largely due to poor tissue quality of archived samples. Seven populations spanning the distributional range of G. gladius were assessed. The results indicate that G. gladius has high levels of gene flow among sites 10s to 100s km apart and limited genetic structure. Haplotypic diversity was not equally distributed among populations, with lower diversity for the Macauley Volcano population at the northern extent of the species distribution and greater diversity within central populations. Migrant exchange was also greatest between central populations, with one population at Rumble V Seamount appearing important in terms of maintaining genetic diversity within the Kermadec Volcanic Arc region. However, interpretation of the results should be viewed with caution as small sample sizes may have limited the ability to detect genetic structure. Despite these limitations, mitigation strategies that protect areas of seabed from mining activities should consider the genetic vulnerability of the population at the northern edge of the species’ distribution and the significance of certain central populations.

For the upcoming PLAnetary Transits and Oscillation of stars (PLATO) satellite mission, a large number of target stars are required to yield a statistically significant number of planet transits. Locating the centres of the long duration observational phase (LOP) fields closer to the Galactic plane will increase the target star numbers but also the astrophysical false positives (FPs) from blended eclipsing binary systems. We utilize the Binary Stellar Evolution and Population Synthesis code, to create a complete synthetic stellar and planetary population for the proposed southern LOP field (LOPS0), as well as for a representative portion of the northern LOP field (LOPN-sub). For LOPS0, we find an overall low FP rate for planets smaller than Neptunes. The FP rate generally shows little variation with Galactic longitude (l), and a modest increase with decreasing Galactic latitude (| b |). The location of the LOPS field centre within the current allowed region is not strongly constrained by FPs. Analysis of LOPN-sub suggests a markedly increased number of FPs across the full range of planet radii at low | b | resulting in approximately twice the percentage of FP detection rate in the LOPN-sub compared to the corresponding southern field segment in the planet radius range −0.2 < log (R /R⊕) ≤ 0.4. However, only a few per cent of fully eclipsing FPs in LOPS0 in this radius range have periods between 180 and 1000 d so the vast majority of FPs are expected to be outside the period range of interest for PLATO. Empirical data suggest that rectal prolapse (RP) is common in captive Sulawesi crested black macaques (Macaca nigra) in Europe, resulting in the euthanasia of animals that experience repeat occurrences. However, the prevalence, etiology, and risk factors of RP remain unidentified. The aims of this retrospective study were to assess the morbidity and mortality of RP, to provide an overview of management practices, and to identify risk factors for RP in this species. A questionnaire was sent to all European Ex situ Programme institutions that housed M. nigra between 01 January 2014 and 31 December 2020. Zoological Information Management System medical records and the studbook were used to obtain additional information. The questionnaire had a response rate of 65%, accounting for 204 animals. Of these animals, 25 (12.3%) suffered from at least one RP event during the study period and recurrence was noted in 72%. The majority of prolapses reverted naturally, but 28% of afflicted animals were euthanized for this ailment. Institutions with M. nigra with high frequencies of diarrhea (P= 0.035), those that provided diets of ≥90% vegetables and high-fiber pellet (P < 0.001), and those with more male than female M. nigra (P < 0.001) had increased odds of RP. Institutions that provided fruits daily (P < 0.002) had reduced odds of having RP cases. Although correlation of RP with diet was identified, confounding cannot be excluded, and a detailed dietary analysis needs to take place before altering feeding practices. Acute stressors and detection of protozoa in fecal samples were common findings before an RP event. Demographic analysis indicated that aged females, young males, and subordinate individuals were most affected by this condition. Where tested during an RP intervention, animals had low serum levels of vitamin D. Pedigree analysis hinted at genetic predisposition in this species and requires further investigation. Interest in deep seafloor mineral exploitation has been developing over the last few decades, and especially recently as the potential application of metals and elements in these mineral deposits has become more relevant for clean energy technology. The mineral resources located in areas beyond national jurisdiction ("the Area") are under the regulatory control of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), which is required to protect the marine environment from the harmful effects of seabed mining activities and make recommendations to avoid serious harm to the marine environment. However, there is currently no agreed operational definition of serious harm for the Area. Noting that we neither support or disapprove of deep-sea mining, we propose a scientifically-focused risk framework approach for defining serious harm in the context of polymetallic nodule mining based on ISA documentation, as well as international and national criteria, and approaches developed for managing deep-sea resources. A three-tier "traffic light" scheme is proposed, with a threshold level between detectable (green) and significant harm (orange), and a further limit beyond which significant harm becomes serious harm (red). The green, orange and red sectors are associated with no additional management, additional management required, and stopping mining operations, respectively. We further provide illustrations of the type of criteria that could be used in defining levels of harmful effects, and further discuss aspects related to ensuring definitions and their application are fit-for-purpose. The framework proposed here provides a blueprint of an adaptive process that can be applied to the management of any mineral resource, although we focus in some specifics on polymetallic nodule mining. Techniques for sampling motile macroinvertebrates associated with Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows have mainly involved the use of hand-nets and suction samplers or collection by hand. These techniques give unreliable quantitative estimates or have practical difficulties. A large cylindrical saw-rimmed corer was designed and used successfully to obtain quantitative samples of macroinvertebrates from both foliage and root-rhizome matrix of a Posidonia oceanica meadow in Malta (central Mediterranean). Choice of the appropriate sample unit size was assessed by comparing the relative accuracy, precision and efficiency of three different core diameters: 25 cm, 35 cm and 45 cm. The results suggest that for comparison of macrofaunal species richness and abundance between different meadows/sites the 25 cm diameter corer is recommended. For surveys aimed at estimating total diversity within a particular site, the 35 cm diameter corer is more appropriate.

Previous research has shown that mobile phone use while driving can increase crash risk fourfold while texting results in 23 times greater crash risk for heavy vehicle drivers. However, mobile phone use has changed in recent years with the functional capabilities of smart phones to now also include a range of other common behaviours while driving such as using Facebook, emailing, the use of ‘apps’ and GPS. Research continues to show performance decrements for many such behaviours while driving, however many Australians still openly admit to illegal mobile phone use while driving despite ongoing enforcement efforts and public awareness campaigns. Of most concern are young drivers. ‘Apps’ available to restrict mobile phone use while in motion do not prevent use while a driver is stopped at traffic lights, so are therefore not a wholly viable solution. Vehicle manufacturers continue to develop in-vehicle technology to minimise distraction, however communication with the ‘outside world’ while driving is also perhaps a strong selling point for vehicles. Hence, the safety message that drivers should focus on the driving task solely and not use communication devices is unlikely to ever be internalised by many drivers. This paper reviews the available literature on the topic and argues that a better understanding of perceptions of mobile phone use while driving and motives for use are required to inform public awareness campaign development for specific road user groups. Additionally, illegal phone use while driving may be reinforced by not being apprehended (punishment avoidance); therefore stronger deterrence-focussed messages may also be beneficial.

The blue-crowned laughingthrush (BCLT) (Pterorhinus courtoisi) is a species of critically endangered passerine that is part of a Global Species Management Plan and experiences high mortality rates in some collections. Complete necropsy and medical records from 15 European institutions that housed BCLT between 1998 and 2018 were assessed to evaluate morbidity and mortality in the captive population. Medical records for 407 BCLT were received; a total of 191 morbidity events were recorded from 111 individual BCLT. The most common cause of morbidity was coccidial disease, including systemic isosporosis (30.4%, n = 58). Age was a significant factor contributing to mortality, with 53% of deaths occurring between 0 and 14 d old and 78% by 1 yr of age. The most common cause of death was trauma (22.8%, n = 31), followed by systemic isosporosis (22%, n = 30). Of the 343 deceased birds for which records were provided, 50.4% had a necropsy performed and 40.5% had histopathology carried out postmortem. Based on these findings, BCLT should be managed carefully to mitigate risk of trauma, and screening for isosporosis should be performed. Institutions should carry out standardized necropsies and histopathology on every BCLT that dies in their collection to elucidate the etiology of disease in this critically endangered species. Frame-building bryozoans occasionally occur in sufficient densities in New Zealand waters to generate habitat for other macrofauna. The environmental conditions necessary for bryozoans to generate such habitat, and the distributions of these species, are poorly known. Bryozoan-generated habitats are vulnerable to bottom fishing, so knowledge of species' distributions is essential for management purposes. To better understand these distributions, presence records were collated and mapped, and habitat suitability models were generated (Maxent, 1 km(2) grid) for the 11 most common habitat-forming bryozoan species: Arachnopusia unicornis, Cellaria immersa, Cellaria tenuirostris, Celleporaria agglutinans, Celleporina grandis, Cinctipora elegans, Diaperoecia purpurascens, Galeopsis porcellanicus, Hippomenella vellicata, Hornera foliacea, and Smittoidea maunganuiensis. The models confirmed known areas of habitat, and indicated other areas as potentially suitable. Water depth, vertical water mixing, tidal currents, and water temperature were useful for describing the distribution of the bryozoan species at broad scales. Areas predicted as suitable for multiple species were identified, and these 'hotspots' were compared to fishing effort data. This showed a potential conflict between fishing and the conservation of bryozoan-generated habitat. Fishing impacts are known from some sites, but damage to large areas of habitat-forming bryozoans is likely to have occurred throughout the study area. In the present study, spatial error associated with the use of historic records and the coarse native resolution of the environmental variables limited both the resolution at which the models could be interpreted and our understanding of the ecological requirements of the study species. However, these models show species distribution modelling has potential to further our understanding of habitat-forming bryozoan ecology and distribution. Importantly, comparisons between hotspots of suitable habitat and the distribution of bottom fishing in the study area highlight the need for management measures designed to mitigate the impact of seafloor disturbance on bryozoan-generated habitat in New Zealand waters.

Cold seep communities with distinctive chemoautotrophic fauna occur where hydrocarbon-rich fluids escape from the seabed. We describe community composition, population densities, spatial extent, and within-region variability of epifaunal communities at methane-rich cold seep sites on the Hikurangi Margin, New Zealand. Using data from towed camera transects, we match observations to information about the probable life-history characteristics of the principal fauna to develop a hypothetical succession sequence for the Hikurangi seep communities, from the onset of fluid flux to senescence. New Zealand seep communities exhibit taxa characteristic of seeps in other regions, including predominance of large siboglinid tubeworms, vesicomyid clams, and bathymodiolin mussels. Some aspects appear to be novel; however, particularly the association of dense populations of ampharetid polychaetes with high-sulphide, high-methane flux, soft-sediment microhabitats. The common occurrence of these ampharetids suggests they play a role in conditioning sulphide-rich sediments at the sediment-water interface, thus facilitating settlement of clam and tubeworm taxa which dominate space during later successional stages. The seep sites are subject to disturbance from bottom trawling at present and potentially from gas hydrate extraction in future. The likely life-history characteristics of the dominant megafauna suggest that while ampharetids, clams, and mussels exploit ephemeral resources through rapid growth and reproduction, lamellibrachid tubeworm populations may persist potentially for centuries. The potential consequences of gas hydrate extraction cannot be fully assessed until extraction methods and target localities are defined but any long-term modification of fluid flow to seep sites would have consequences for all chemoautotrophic fauna.

The efficacies of three concentrations of 2-phenoxyethanol from Aqua-sedTM were examined to determine the suitability for euthanasia of butterfly splitfin (Ameca splendens). Thirty fish were randomly assigned to be immersed in one of three Aqua-SedTM concentrations: 0.5, 2, and 6 ml/L. Opercular rates and caudal fin stroke rates were quantified, and time to the cessation of physiological measures including heartbeat, caudal fin strokes, reaction to external stimuli, righting reflex, swimming, and operculation were recorded. To test for the effects of concentration of Aqua-sedTM on all times to cessation of physiological measures, a linear mixed model was performed followed by pairwise comparisons with a Bonferroni correction. A proportions test compared the number of fish that lost their heartbeat across Aqua-sedTM concentrations. Varying anesthetic induction times were observed for all three Aqua-sedTM concentrations; time to cessation of physiological measures was fastest with 6 ml/L, followed by 2 then 0.5 ml/L, but only concentrations of 2 and 6 ml/L induced anesthesia in less than the recommended 180 s. Aqua-sedTM concentration had a significant effect on time to cessation of physiological measures (P < 0.01), but not on time to cessation of a heartbeat (P > 0.05). Pairwise comparisons indicate time to cessation of caudal fin strokes, reaction to external stimuli, righting reflex, and swimming significantly decreased as concentration increased (P < 0.01). After 60 min of immersion in Aqua-sedTM the number of fish without a heartbeat differed significantly across concentrations (P < 0.01); 20% of fish immersed in 0.5 ml/L, 90% of fish immersed in 2 ml/L, and 90% of fish immersed in 6 ml/L had no heartbeat. A minimum dose of 2 ml/L of Aqua-sedTM, and an immersion time of 60 min for euthanasia of butterfly splitfin is recommended, with a secondary euthanasia measure to confirm death when the heartbeat remains. Patterns of genetic connectivity are increasingly considered in the design of marine protected areas (MPAs) in both shallow and deep water. In the New Zealand Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), deep-sea communities at upper bathyal depths (

Seamounts shape the topography of all ocean basins and can be hotspots of biological activity in the deep sea. The Census of Marine Life on Seamounts (CenSeam) was a field program that examined seamounts as part of the global Census of Marine Life (CoML) initiative from 2005 to 2010. CenSeam progressed seamount science by collating historical data, collecting new data, undertaking regional and global analyses of seamount biodiversity, mapping species and habitat distributions, challenging established paradigms of seamount ecology, developing new hypotheses, and documenting the impacts of human activities on seamounts. However, because of the large number of seamounts globally, much about the structure, function and connectivity of seamount ecosystems remains unexplored and unknown. Continual, and potentially increasing, threats to seamount resources from fishing and seabed mining are creating a pressing demand for research to inform conservation and management strategies. To meet this need, intensive science effort in the following areas will be needed: 1) Improved physical and biological data; of particular importance is information on seamount location, physical characteristics (e.g. habitat heterogeneity and complexity), more complete and intensive biodiversity inventories, and increased understanding of seamount connectivity and faunal dispersal; 2) New human impact data; these shall encompass better studies on the effects of human activities on seamount ecosystems, as well as monitoring long-term changes in seamount assemblages following impacts (e.g. recovery); 3) Global data repositories; there is a pressing need for more comprehensive fisheries catch and effort data, especially on the high seas, and compilation or maintenance of geological and biodiversity databases that underpin regional and global analyses; 4) Application of support tools in a data-poor environment; conservation and management will have to increasingly rely on predictive modelling techniques, critical evaluation of environmental surrogates as faunal "proxies", and ecological risk assessment.

The deep sea, the largest ecosystem on Earth and one of the least studied, harbours high biodiversity and provides a wealth of resources. Although humans have used the oceans for millennia, technological developments now allow exploitation of fisheries resources, hydrocarbons and minerals below 2000 m depth. The remoteness of the deep seafloor has promoted the disposal of residues and litter. Ocean acidification and climate change now bring a new dimension of global effects. Thus the challenges facing the deep sea are large and accelerating, providing a new imperative for the science community, industry and national and international organizations to work together to develop successful exploitation management and conservation of the deep-sea ecosystem. This paper provides scientific expert judgement and a semi-quantitative analysis of past, present and future impacts of human-related activities on global deep-sea habitats within three categories: disposal, exploitation and climate change. The analysis is the result of a Census of Marine Life--SYNDEEP workshop (September 2008). A detailed review of known impacts and their effects is provided. The analysis shows how, in recent decades, the most significant anthropogenic activities that affect the deep sea have evolved from mainly disposal (past) to exploitation (present). We predict that from now and into the future, increases in atmospheric CO(2) and facets and consequences of climate change will have the most impact on deep-sea habitats and their fauna. Synergies between different anthropogenic pressures and associated effects are discussed, indicating that most synergies are related to increased atmospheric CO(2) and climate change effects. We identify deep-sea ecosystems we believe are at higher risk from human impacts in the near future: benthic communities on sedimentary upper slopes, cold-water corals, canyon benthic communities and seamount pelagic and benthic communities. We finalise this review with a short discussion on protection and management methods.

Deep sea scleractinian corals will be particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, facing loss of up to 70% of their habitat as the Aragonite Saturation Horizon (below which corals are unable to form calcium carbonate skeletons) rises. Persistence of deep sea scleractinian corals will therefore rely on the ability of larvae to disperse to, and colonise, suitable shallow-water habitat. We used DNA sequence data of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), the mitochondrial ribosomal subunit (16S) and mitochondrial control region (MtC) to determine levels of gene flow both within and among populations of the deep sea coral Desmophyllum dianthus in SE Australia, New Zealand and Chile to assess the ability of corals to disperse into different regions and habitats. We found significant genetic subdivision among the three widely separated geographic regions consistent with isolation and limited contemporary gene flow. Furthermore, corals from different depth strata (shallow 1500 m) even on the same or nearby seamounts were strongly differentiated, indicating limited vertical larval dispersal. Genetic differentiation with depth is consistent with the stratification of the Subantarctic Mode Water, Antarctic Intermediate Water, the Circumpolar Deep and North Pacific Deep Waters in the Southern Ocean, and we propose that coral larvae will be retained within, and rarely migrate among, these water masses. The apparent absence of vertical larval dispersal suggests deep populations of D. dianthus are unlikely to colonise shallow water as the aragonite saturation horizon rises and deep waters become uninhabitable. Similarly, assumptions that deep populations will act as refuges for shallow populations that are impacted by activities such as fishing or mining are also unlikely to hold true. Clearly future environmental management strategies must consider both regional and depth-related isolation of deep-sea coral populations.

The continued growth in popularity of motorcycling is an area of concern within the road safety domain due to the vulnerability of motorcyclists sustaining injury in the event of a crash. Currently in Australia only motorcycle helmets are mandatory for motorcyclists or pillions to wear and there is no legislative standard for other protective apparel. This paper reports the results obtained from a series of motorcyclists’ apparel observational studies undertaken in the Brisbane and Canberra regions. The sites selected for the research were designed to enable the observation of both recreational and commuter riders. The results highlight both similarities and differences in the type of protective apparel worn by motorcyclists and pillions observed across the two regions. Encouragingly, across all the sites the majority of riders were wearing protective apparel on their upper body. However, a lower proportion of riders were observed wearing protective apparel on their lower body, particularly at the commuter sites in Brisbane. Similarly, the wearing of full face helmets was very high, except at the commuter sites in Brisbane. The generally lower use of protective apparel among commuter riders in Brisbane would appear to reflect both situational factors, such as climate, and the higher proportion of scooters observed at the sites. The implications of these results are discussed and recommendations are made for future research to identify factors that influence the wearing of protective motorcycle apparel.

Past studies of the effects of motorcycle training on crash involvement have shown mixed results. However, many of the studies were conducted when most trainee riders were aged under 20. Now, many trainees are older and have considerable car driving experience. Training programs have also changed. For these reasons, this paper examines the training history of a sample of older riders and the links to their crash involvement.

Throughout North America, chronic wasting disease (CWD) has emerged as perhaps the greatest threat to wild cervid populations, including white-tailed deer (WTD; Odocoileus virginianus). White-tailed deer are the most sought-after big game species across North America with populations of various subspecies in nearly all Canadian provinces, the contiguous US, and Mexico. Documented CWD cases have dramatically increased across the WTD range since the mid-1990s, including in Minnesota, US. CWD surveillance in free-ranging WTD and other cervid populations mainly depends upon immunodetection methods such as immunohistochemistry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) on medial retropharyngeal lymph nodes and obex. More recent technologies centered on prion protein amplification methods of detection have shown promise as more sensitive and rapid CWD diagnostic tools. Here, we used blinded samples to test the efficacy of real-time quaking-induced conversion (RT-QuIC) in comparison to ELISA for screening tissues collected in 2019 from WTD in southeastern Minnesota, where CWD has been routinely detected since 2016. Our results support previous findings that RT-QuIC is a more sensitive tool for CWD detection than current antibody-based methods. Additionally, a CWD testing protocol that includes multiple lymphoid tissues (e.g., medial retropharyngeal lymph node, parotid lymph node, and palatine tonsil) per animal can effectively identify a greater number of CWD detections in a WTD population than a single sample type (e.g., medial retropharyngeal lymph nodes). These results show that the variability of CWD pathogenesis, sampling protocol, and testing platform must be considered for the effective detection and management of CWD throughout North America. The “Graveyard seamounts” comprise a complex of 28 small volcanic edifices covering about 140 km2 on the northern flank of the Chatham Rise, an oceanic plateau that extends several hundred kilometers east of New Zealand. The features are associated with widely distributed Late Cenozoic volcanism that created a number of clusters of small intraplate volcanoes in the area. They have various volcanic forms, including cones, summit craters, and lateral dike ridges. Typically, each seamount is between 100 and 400 m high, rising from basal water depths of 1050–1200 m to summit depths of 750–1000 m. Bottom-current flows of 10–20 cm s-1 produce basal scour moats at all the seamounts.

Fish may warrant euthanasia for a variety of reasons, but euthanasia may be difficult to accomplish or confirm because fish can recover from deep anesthesia even after cardiac and respiratory arrest. The efficacies of three types of anesthetics were evaluated to compare their suitability for euthanasia of Unga cichlids (Sarotherodon linellii). Thirty cichlids were randomly assigned to be immersed in one of the three anesthetic solutions: tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222), 2-phenoxyethanol (2-PE), and clove oil (CO) at doses of 1,000 mg/L, 2 mL/L, and 500 mg/L respectively. The opercular rates and caudal fin stroke rates were quantified, and the time to cessation of physiological measures (CPM) including caudal fin strokes, the reaction to external stimuli, the righting reflex, swimming, and operculation were recorded. Varying anesthetic induction times were observed with all three euthanasia solutions; the time to CPM in the 2-PE group occurred at a significantly slower rate than in the MS-222 group (P < 0.01). No significant differences were identified for the time to CPM when comparing the standard length or weight of the cichlids in all euthanasia solutions (P > 0.05). The cost of euthanasia per cichlid was calculated, with the most economically viable option being 2-PE; at more than seven times the price of 2-PE, MS-222 was the most expensive. After a 60-min immersion in the euthanasia solution, the presence of an audible heartbeat was identified in 100% of the cichlids immersed in 2-PE, 100% immersed in CO, and 90% in MS-222, indicating that they were not reliably euthanized. Therefore, a two-step protocol is recommended in cichlids for euthanasia: heavy anesthesia via immersion followed by an intravenous or intracardiac injection of euthanasia solution, or other secondary method of euthanasia. Wistar Furth (RT1 u ) islets transplanted under the renal capsules of streptozotocin-diabetic Lewis (RT1 l ) rats reject after 5–6 days of normoglycemia. Hand-picked WF islets (1500–2000) were transplanted under the kidney capsules of diabetic Lew or WF rats. Rats bearing iso- or allografts were killed on posttransplant days 2, 4, and 6. Serial frozen sections of grafts and controls were stained by immunoperoxidase for rat MAC-1, class II MHC, CD2, CD4, CD8, B-cells, VLA-4, LFA-1, L-selectin, ICAM-1, and VCAM-1. Infiltrating cells, parenchymal cells, and endothelial cells in five distinct compartments (i.e., peritoneal reflection, subcapsular perivascular space, islet grafts, graft–kidney interface, and kidney) were evaluated for expression of the various markers at each interval. Significant infiltrates arrived in three distinct waves in both iso- and allografts. First, macrophages blanketed the peritoneal capsular reflection and infiltrated by day 2. Second, the first wave of lymphocytes arrived in the edematous subcapsular soft tissue via capsular vessels by day 2 (allo > iso). Third, the second wave of lymphocytes arrived from the renal parenchyma to form a dense band at the graft–kidney interface and around grafts by days 4 and 6 (allo >>> iso); CD4+ cells vastly outnumbered CD8+ cells, with CD4+ cells being mobilized first and from interstitial vessels throughout the entire kidney. CD8+ cells emigrated only from renal interstitial vessels adjacent to the graft. Large numbers of L-selectin+, VLA-4+, and LFA-1+ cells were seen in the infiltrates with the most intensely staining cells being intravascular. B-cells composed a very small proportion of infiltrating cells in both allo- and isografts. Endothelial staining for ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 was prominent throughout. Both class II MHC and ICAM-1 expression were induced on renal tubular epithelial cells, but neither was found on islet parenchymal cells. In conclusion, this study shows that islet allograft rejection is more complex than previously realized.
