Primate communities in the Genting Highlands consist of a single species of Hylobatidae and four species of Cercopithecidae, which are known to exhibit social interaction behaviour. Thus, a study on the diets of Symphalangus syndactylus (siamang; family Hylobatidae) and Macaca nemestrina (pig-tailed macaque; family Cercopithecidae) was carried out at Genting Highlands, in order to compare the dietary preferences and interspecific competition between the two primate families. A DNA metabarcoding approach was used to analyse diet intake using non-invasive samples based on the trnL region. Based on the 140 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) generated, 26 plant orders, 46 different families, 60 genera and 49 species were identified from 23 different plant classes. Fabaceae and Moraceae were classified as the most preferred plants at the family level for S. syndactylus; meanwhile, Piperaceae and Arecaceae were classified as the most preferred for M. nemestrina. Only six out of the 60 different plant genera classified in this study, were found to be consumed by both species. Therefore, the low similarity of preferred plants in the diets between the two families suggests that there is little interspecific competition. These findings are important for future conservation management of highland primates, especially in the Genting Highlands.

Copulas are a vital statistical tool, particularly in hydrology, for understanding complex relationships among flood characteristics. This study focuses on three key flood features: peak discharge, flood volume, and flood duration, using trivariate copulas to capture their interdependencies. This is crucial because bivariate and univariate analyses fall short in considering all three factors simultaneously. To handle extreme flood values, L-moment is proposed over maximum likelihood estimation and inference function margin due to its enhanced reliability and susceptibility to outliers and extreme values. Akaike information criterion was employed to identify the best-fit marginal distribution and copula. The Lognormal distribution effectively models peak discharge, while Weibull and generalized extreme value distributions fit flood volume and duration best, respectively. Various copula families, including elliptical and Archimedean, are assessed, where Clayton copula emerge as the most suitable. This analysis demonstrates that when more flood features are considered together, the return period increases, indicating the reduced likelihood of occurrence. The trivariate case of the AND-joint return period surpasses the trivariate case of the OR-joint return period where the TP, V, DAND=5, 405.93 years, while TP, V, DOR=500.46 years. This comprehensive approach enhances hydrological modeling and decision-making for water resource management and flood mitigation projects. Seagrass beds are highly productive ecosystems and have ecosystem services in the coastal zone but are continuously declining globally. Mainly due to anthropogenic activities that reduce the amount of light entering the waters and reaching seagrasses, such as dredging, reclamation, sedimentation, and eutrophication. This research was conducted to determine the relationship between turbidity level and seagrass composition and morphology. The observations were conducted in November 2016 in Pangkep district on Sagara Island and Makassar City on Barrang Lompo and Lae-lae Island, South Sulawesi Province. The observation stations are determined based on the level of turbidity conditions. Sagara Island, Barrang Lompo, and Lae-lae are areas that are considered to represent turbid waters, by laying a line transect (roll meter) perpendicular to the coast and doing it 3 times. The data collected in this study related to seagrass conditions such as seagrass composition and seagrass morphometrics. Variables observed in seagrass leaf morphometric observations were leaf surface area and leaf width, leaf thickness, and distance between internodes. In addition, other data collected is environmental parameter data, such as currents, TSS, PAR, temperature, and salinity. One-way ANOVA analysis showed that there was a difference in turbidity levels between Barrang Lompo Island, Sagara Island, and Lae-lae Island with a significance value of 0.000. The types of seagrasses found on Barrang Lompo with light availability of 1735.23 µmol/m²/s are Enhalus acoroides, Cymodocea rotundata, Halodule uninervis, Halophila ovalis, Thalassia hemprichii. On P. Sagara with light availability of 170.01 µmol/m²/s, E. acoroides, T. hemprichii, Cymodocea serrulata, H. uninervis, and H. ovalis were found. Whereas in P. Lae-lae only E. acoroides was found. The results showed that the level of turbidity has an influence on seagrass morphometrics, namely leaf ratio and leaf thickness of E. acoroides species, and internode distance in H. uninervis species. In the quest for enhanced anaerobic digestion (AD) performance and stability, iron-based additives as micro-nutrients and drinking water treatment sludge (DWTS) emerge as key players. This study investigates the kinetics of methane production during AD of dairy manure, incorporating varying concentrations of Fe and Fe3O4 (10, 20, and 30 mg L-1) and DWTS (6, 12, and 18 mg L-1). Leveraging an extensive library of non-linear regression (NLR) models, 26 candidates were scrutinized and eight emerged as robust predictors for the entire methane production process. The Michaelis-Menten model stood out as the superior choice, unraveling the kinetics of dairy manure AD with the specified additives. Fascinatingly, the findings revealed that different levels of DWTS showcased the highest methane production, while Fe3O420 and Fe3O430 recorded the lowest levels. Notably, DWTS6 demonstrated approximately 34% and 42% higher methane production compared to Fe20 and Fe3O430, respectively, establishing it as the most effective treatment. Additionally, DWTS12 exhibited the highest rate of methane production, reaching an impressive 147.6 cc on the 6th day. Emphasizing the practical implications, this research underscores the applicability of the proposed model for analyzing other parameters and optimizing AD performance. By delving into the potential of iron-based additives and DWTS, this study opens doors to revolutionizing methane production from dairy manure and advancing sustainable waste management practices.

Water scarcity is recognized as a critical global concern and one viable solution involves extracting water from atmospheric humidity by leveraging subterranean coldness. This study meticulously evaluates the operational efficacy of a water production system by examining four pivotal factors: buried pipe length (TL), air flow rate (AFR), air temperature (AT), and air humidity (AH). A positive correlation between these variables and water vapor production is established, with AT exerting the most pronounced influence. Significantly, the analysis of variance reveals the main and interactive effects of the variables, except for TL × AFR, at a 5% significance level. To enhance understanding of the intricate interplay among these factors, a proficient least squares support vector machines model is devised, employing a radial basis function kernel. This model demonstrates an impressive 98% concurrence between projected and empirical data, with a minimal error of 0.66 mL and 5.99%. An in-depth sensitivity analysis underscores the differential impact of AT, AH, TL, and AFR on water vapor (WV) prediction. Optimal values of 3.98 m, 6.89 m3/h, 46.30 °C, and 86.62% for TL, AFR, AT, and AH, respectively, are obtained through subsequent optimization of independent variables using genetic algorithms, resulting in a notable water production of 23.61 mL. HIGHLIGHTS Air humidity can address rural water scarcity.; Air temperature, humidity, flow rate, and pipe length affect water volume production.; The support vector machine model with radial basis function kernel is the best solution for predicting water volume.; The least squares support vector machines model shows a 98% agreement between predicted and experimental data.; Genetic algorithms resulted in optimized independent variable values and 23.61 mL water production.;

Bipolar disorder is commonly treated with lithium carbonate. The concentration of lithium in the blood serum should be closely monitored in patients who require long-term lithium therapy. To date, no colorimetric method of detecting lithium ions has been reported using nanosensors. We have developed a novel chemosensor based on nanozyme (NZ) to address this clinical need. The GO-Ag2O NZs were synthesized by a sonochemical method and used as a colorimetric nanosensor to detect lithium ions in human blood serum (Li (I)). To characterize NZs, various techniques were employed, including XRD, FTIR, TEM, FESEM, EDX, Raman spectroscopy, BET, DLS, Zeta potential, and ICP-OES. According to TEM and FESEM images of GO-Ag2O, the nanoparticles (NPs) of Ag2O are uniformly distributed on the surface of 2D graphene oxide sheets. In addition, silver oxide nanoparticles exhibited a cubic morphology with an average size of 3.5 nm. We have examined the performance of the NZs in an aqueous medium and in human blood serum that contains Li (I). A colorimetric test revealed that NZs synthesized in the presence of ultrasound were more sensitive to Li (I). According to the linearity of the calibration curves’ ranges, Li (I) has a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.01 µg/mL. Furthermore, it displayed a linear range between 0 and 12 µg/mL. GO-Ag2O NZs showed noticeable color changes from green to orange after exposure to Li (I). An incubation time of two minutes was found to be the most effective for sensing. This innovative approach provides a reliable method for monitoring lithium levels and ensuring patient safety during long-term lithium therapy for bipolar disorder.

BackgroundLearning and teaching interdisciplinary health data science (HDS) is highly challenging, and despite the growing interest in HDS education, little is known about the learning experiences and preferences of HDS students. ObjectiveWe conducted a systematic review to identify learning preferences and strategies in the HDS discipline. MethodsWe searched 10 bibliographic databases (PubMed, ACM Digital Library, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Wiley Online Library, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, EBSCOhost, ERIC, and IEEE Xplore) from the date of inception until June 2023. We followed the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines and included primary studies written in English that investigated the learning preferences or strategies of students in HDS-related disciplines, such as bioinformatics, at any academic level. Risk of bias was independently assessed by 2 screeners using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool, and we used narrative data synthesis to present the study results. ResultsAfter abstract screening and full-text reviewing of the 849 papers retrieved from the databases, 8 (0.9%) studies, published between 2009 and 2021, were selected for narrative synthesis. The majority of these papers (7/8, 88%) investigated learning preferences, while only 1 (12%) paper studied learning strategies in HDS courses. The systematic review revealed that most HDS learners prefer visual presentations as their primary learning input. In terms of learning process and organization, they mostly tend to follow logical, linear, and sequential steps. Moreover, they focus more on abstract information, rather than detailed and concrete information. Regarding collaboration, HDS students sometimes prefer teamwork, and sometimes they prefer to work alone. ConclusionsThe studies’ quality, assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool, ranged between 73% and 100%, indicating excellent quality overall. However, the number of studies in this area is small, and the results of all studies are based on self-reported data. Therefore, more research needs to be conducted to provide insight into HDS education. We provide some suggestions, such as using learning analytics and educational data mining methods, for conducting future research to address gaps in the literature. We also discuss implications for HDS educators, and we make recommendations for HDS course design; for example, we recommend including visual materials, such as diagrams and videos, and offering step-by-step instructions for students.

Abstract Background Intestinal inflammation has various causes and leads to some inflammatory diseases, of which autophagy pathway dysfunction could be considered as one of them. Probiotics could have a positive effect on reducing inflammation by activating the autophagy pathway. To evaluate the precise effects of probiotics as preventive and therapeutic agents to control the symptoms of inflammatory diseases, we aimed to investigate the efficacy of Lactobacillus spp. in regulating the autophagy signaling pathway. Methods A quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction assay was used to analyze the expression of autophagy genes involved in the formation of phagophores, autophagosomes, and autolysosomes after exposing the HT‐29 cell line to sonicated pathogens and adding Lactobacillus spp. before, after, and simultaneously with inflammation. A cytokine assay was also accomplished to evaluate the interleukin (IL)‐6 and IL‐1β level following the probiotic treatment. Results Lactobacillus spp. generally increased autophagy gene expression and consumption of Lactobacillus spp. before, simultaneously, and after inflammation, ultimately leading to activate autophagy pathways. The proinflammatory cytokines including IL‐6 and IL‐1β decreased after probiotic treatment. Conclusions Our native probiotic Lactobacillus spp. showed beneficial effects on HT‐29 cells by increasing autophagy gene expression and decreasing the proinflammatory cytokines production in all treatments. Therefore, this novel probiotic cocktail Lactobacillus spp. can prevent and treat inflammation‐related diseases.

Abstract Background and Aim One of the leading reasons that patients, particularly older persons, are brought to the orthopedic emergency room is a fracture at the end of the radius. In this study, a new traction method for distal radius fractures was compared with manual reduction. Methods The census method was used in this clinical trial to study 45 patients (46 hands) who were referred to Hamedan Besat Hospital in 2021. Patients were randomly assigned to two groups. The manual reduction (pressure and traction by an assistant and a doctor) method was implemented in Group A, and the new traction procedure (pressure and traction by hardware or a device) was performed in Group B. The radiographic results of reduction in both groups were investigated and compared immediately and in the first and 6 weeks after surgery. Results The following results were observed in the new and manual groups in the sixth week after surgery: average volar tilt: 4.19 ± 3.79 and 4.08 ± 3.88 (p = 0.926), radial angulation: 2.18 ± 1.27 and 2.21 ± 1.35 (p = 0.934), radial shortening: 10.52 ± 0.65 and 10.56 ± 0.68 (p = 0.828), radial inclination: 22.52 ± 2.46 and 22.71 ± 2.01 (p = 0.787), dorsal angulation: −5.89 ± 0.33 and 5.22 ± −1.91 (p = 1.00), ulnar variance: 1.66 ± 0.90 and 1.67 ± 0.81 (p = 0.958), and average pain score: 2.40 ± 0.68 and 2.47 ± 0.73 (p = 0.737). Conclusion The new reduction procedure with hardware in patients with distal radius fractures showed the same effect as the traditional method based on pressure and traction by the assistant and doctor in terms of radiographic changes and pain score of the fracture site.

Background & Aim: Patients who receive percutaneous coronary interventions often display inadequate levels of self-care actions, which could create difficulties in managing the disease and achieving favorable treatment results. This study investigates the impact of using an educational mobile application on self-care behaviors in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention. Methods & Materials: A randomized clinical trial was conducted with 110 patients undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions at Shahid Rajaei Hospital in Karaj, Iran, in 2023. The study enrolled and assigned them to either the intervention group (n=55) or the control group (n=55) by block randomization. In addition to training upon discharge, the experimental group received educational resources via a mobile phone application. The data collection instruments included MSCBS. Background: Previous studies have shown that parents demand for information on vaccinations is universal. Nonetheless, parental knowledge demonstrated mixed results in vaccination intention, attitude, uptake, or confidence. In contrast, risk perception is a consistent predictor of vaccination-related outcomes. Objective: This study aimed to establish risk perception as a mediator between vaccination knowledge and intention. Method: Using a multistage random sampling technique, a cross-sectional survey was conducted with expectant mothers from maternity and child health clinics in the districts of Petaling, Klang, Gombak, and Hulu Langat. 416 respondents answered the self-administered questionnaire. Data was analysed using SPSS version 27 for descriptive statistics and Amos version 27 with bootstrapping procedure for mediation analysis. Results: Vaccination knowledge predicted risk perception [std β = 0.743, p = 0.036], risk perception predicted vaccination intention [std β = 0.934, p = 0.006], and risk perception fully mediate the relationship between vaccination knowledge and intention [std β = 0.694, p = 0.016]. The mediation model showed satisfactory fit indices: χ2/df (2.898), comparative fit index 0.946, Tucker-Lewis index 0.939, and root mean squared error of approximation 0.061. Conclusion: The goal of educational interventions is to increase vaccination intention by addressing vaccine information that influences both subjective and objective risk perception.

The efficient operation of a solar field is an essential factor for the commercial operation of a concentrating solar power (CSP) plant. In addition to predictive control for the highest possible constant outlet temperature at high mass flow, efficient operation also includes early detection of defective components and heat losses. This work presents a method for non-invasive heat loss detection as a strong indication for vacuum losses, based on measured operational data of Andasol III, an operating 50 MW parabolic trough collector (PTC) plant located in southern Spain. To detect vacuum losses via this method, mass flow rate and temperature reduction are determined separately for each individual loop via the analysis of a short-term temperature rise of the heat transfer fluid (HTF) during preheating. While the temperature reduction was measured directly, the mass flow was determined via the thermal time-of-flight (ToF) method using the same installed temperature sensors. By measuring thermal step responses during the preheating of the solar field at nighttime operation, the influence of fluctuating direct normal irradiance (DNI), misalignment of the absorber tubes and an offset in collector focus was circumvented. In the scope of the presented work, single loops were detected, which show a higher heat loss at lower mass flow rate and therefore have an increased probability of a higher vacuum loss. Better localization and early detection of these vacuum losses would allow the corresponding absorber tubes to be renewed at the economically and environmentally best time, improving the efficiency of the solar field and thus the entire CSP plant.

Introduction Reducing neonatal deaths in premature infants in low- and middle-income countries is key to reducing global neonatal mortality. International neonatal networks, along with patient registries of premature infants, have contributed to improving the quality of neonatal care; however, the involvement of low-to-middle-income countries was limited. This project aims to form an international collaboration among neonatal networks in Asia (AsianNeo), including low-, middle- and high-income countries (or regions). Specifically, it aims to determine outcomes in sick newborn infants, especially very low birth weight (VLBW) infants or very preterm infants, with a view to improving the quality of care for such infants.Methods and analysis Currently, AsianNeo comprises nine neonatal networks from Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Thailand. AsianNeo will undertake the following four studies: (1) institutional questionnaire surveys investigating neonatal intensive care unit resources and the clinical management of sick newborn infants, with a focus on VLBW infants (nine countries/regions); (2) a retrospective cohort study to describe and compare the outcomes of VLBW infants among Asian countries and regions (four countries/regions); (3) a prospective cohort study to develop the AsianNeo registry of VLBW infants (six countries/regions); and (4) implementation and evaluation of educational and quality improvement projects in AsianNeo countries and regions (nine countries/regions).Ethics and dissemination The study protocol was approved by the Research Ethics Board of the National Center for Child Health and Development, Tokyo, Japan (reference number 2020–244, 2022–156). The study findings will be disseminated through educational programmes, quality improvement activities, conference presentations and medical journal publications.

This study evaluates the therapeutic efficacy and safety of Vernonia Amygdalina extract (VAEE) in treating colorectal cancer (CRC) induced by azoxymethane/dextran sulfate sodium (AOM/DSS) in mice and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. The study utilized a mouse model of CRC to assess the impact of VAEE on pathological markers, inflammatory mediators, and oxidative stress. Phytochemical profiling of VAEE was conducted using LC-HRMS, focusing on phenolic compounds. The extract's antioxidant activity was quantified, and its safety profile was verified through acute toxicity assessments. VAEE significantly mitigated the AOM/DSS-induced reduction in colon length and weight loss in a dose-dependent manner. The treatment decreased pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α) while increasing the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. VAEE also demonstrated strong antioxidant activity and did not adversely affect blood, kidney, or liver biomarkers, confirming its non-toxicity. Protein-protein interaction analysis suggested VAEE's role in inhibiting inflammatory markers, including COX-2, IL-18, and NF-kB. Molecular docking results supported the extract's affinity for these proteins, indicating potential as a COX-2 inhibitor. VAEE exhibits potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and anticarcinogenic properties against CRC, with a favorable safety profile. These findings advocate for the integration of VAEE as a novel therapeutic agent in CRC treatment. Further investigations into its molecular mechanisms and long-term effects are warranted to facilitate clinical translation.

This study evaluated the potential impact of climate change on the distribution of Forsythia suspensa, a valuable traditional Chinese medicinal plant, using the MaxEnt model integrated with Geographic Information System (GIS). By analyzing occurrence data from various databases and environmental variables including climate and soil factors, we forecasted the present and future (2050s and 2070s) habitat suitability of F. suspensa under different greenhouse gas emission scenarios (RCP8.5, RCP4.5, RCP2.6). Results indicated that the suitable habitats for F. suspensa were primarily located in North, East, Central, Northwest, and Southwest China, with a significant potential expansion of suitable habitats anticipated by the 2070s, particularly under the high emission scenario. The study identified precipitation and temperature as the primary environmental drivers impacting the distribution of F. suspensa. Furthermore, a northward shift in the centroid of suitable habitats under future climate scenarios suggested a potential migration response to global warming. This work provides crucial insights into the future conservation and cultivation strategies for F. suspensa amidst changing climatic conditions.

Abstract Background Overall, there is conflicting evidence regarding the beneficial effects of optimal lifestyle modification, particularly weight loss interventions, with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)). Therefore, this study investigated the effects of weight loss interventions on laboratory and clinical parameters in children and adolescents with NAFLD. Methods Original databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, SCOPUS, and Embase) were searched using standard keywords to identify all controlled trials investigating the effects of weight loss interventions among NAFLD children and adolescents. Pooled weighted mean difference and 95% confidence intervals were achieved by random‐effects model analysis. Results Eighteen eligible clinical trials were included in this systematic review and meta‐analysis. The pooled findings showed that especially more intense weight loss interventions significantly reduced the glucose (p = 0.007), insulin (p = 0.002), homeostatic model assessment‐insulin resistance (HOMA‐IR) (p = 0.003), weight (p = 0.025), body mass index (BMI) (p = 0.003), BMI z‐score (p 0.05) following weight loss interventions. Conclusions Weight loss interventions had significant effects on NAFLD‐related parameters including glucose, insulin, HOMA‐IR, weight, BMI, BMI z‐score, WC, TG, and AST.

There has been a consistent interest in the aquaculture industry in the use of plant elements as a substitute for fish meal (FM). The present study aimed to examine the impact of substituting FM with varying proportions of fermented spent coffee grounds (FCG) on the growth performance, feed stability, blood biochemistry, liver, and intestinal histology of African catfish, Clarias gariepinus. Five isonitrogenous diets were formulated with a crude protein content of 32 %. These diets were created with different percentages of FM replacement, specifically 0 % (T1), 10 % (T2), 20 % (T3), 40 % (T4), and 80 % (T5). The fish were then fed these diets for a duration of 70 days. The results showed that fish provided with 10 % FCG (T2) gave the highest improvement (p < 0.05) in growth conditions compared with other treatments. The feed’s physical properties were varying, but floatability and water stability were highest in T2 diets. Total bacteria (TB) in feed and intestine were more elevated in fish fed with 10 % FCG compared to other treatments. The histopathological damage in the intestine and liver morphology was observed when the level of inclusion of FCG was increased in all treatments. In addition, T2 gave the highest value (p < 0.05) in villus length, width, and crypt depth. Some parameters were improved in both blood haematology and blood biochemical parameters, and T2 gave the highest value (p < 0.05) in white blood cells, lymphocytosis, monocytes, red blood cells, haemoglobin, albumin, globulin, total protein, and creatine. In summary, the substitution of 10 % FCG with FM holds potential for application within the aquafeed sector, as it has been observed to contribute to enhanced growth and improved health conditions in African catfish and other freshwater species.
