Abstract

PurposeRadiology departments around the world have been faced with the challenge to adapt, and recover to the COVID-19 pandemic. This study is part of a worldwide survey of radiologists' responses to COVID-19 in 18 different countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. The purpose of this study is to analyze the changes made in international radiology departments and practices in response to the pandemic.MethodsThe 18-item survey was sent via email from April to May 2020 to radiologists in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America to assess their response to COVID-19. Our survey included questions regarding imaging, workforce adjustments, testing availability, staff and patient safety, research and education, and infrastructure availability.ResultsTwenty-eight survey responses were reviewed. Of the 28 respondents, 42.9% have shortages of infrastructure and 78.6% responded that COVID-19 testing was available. Regarding the use of Chest CT in COVID-19 patients, 28.6% respondents used Chest CT as screening for COVID-19. For staff safety, interventions included encouraging use of masks in patient encounters, social distancing and PPE training. To cope with their education and research mission, radiology departments are doing online lectures, reducing the number of residents in rotations, and postponing any non-urgent activities.ConclusionIn conclusion, there are disparities in infrastructure, research, and educational initiatives during COVID-19 which also provides opportunity for the global radiology community to work together on these issues.

Abstract

One of the main issues related to unsupervised machine learning is the cost of processing and extracting useful information from large datasets. In this work, we propose a classifier ensemble based on the transferable learning capabilities of the CLIP neural network architecture in multimodal environments (image and text) from social media. For this purpose, we used the InstaNY100K dataset and proposed a validation approach based on sampling techniques. Our experiments, based on image classification tasks according to the labels of the Places dataset, are performed by first considering only the visual part, and then adding the associated texts as support. The results obtained demonstrated that trained neural networks such as CLIP can be successfully applied to image classification with little fine-tuning, and considering the associated texts to the images can help to improve the accuracy depending on the goal. The results demonstrated what seems to be a promising research direction.

177. Wavefronts, light rays and caustic associated with the refraction of a plane wave by a conospherical lens

Abstract

The aim of the present work is to introduce a lens whose faces are a conical surface and a spherical surface. We illuminate this lens by a plane wavefront and its associated refracted wavefronts, light rays and caustic are computed. We find that the caustic has two branches. The first is constituted by two segments of a line, one part of this caustic is real and the other one virtual. The second branch of the caustic is a two-dimensional surface with a singularity of the cusp ridge type. It is important to remark that the two branches of the caustic are disconnected. Because of this property we believe that using this optical element one could generate a scalar optical accelerating beam in the region where the caustic is a two-dimensional surface of revolution, and at the same time a scalar optical beam with similar properties to the Bessel beam of zero order in the region were the real caustic is a segment of a line along the optical axis., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

ExoFit trials are field campaigns financed by ESA to test the Rosalind Franklin rover and to enhance collaboration practices between ExoMars working groups. During the first trial, a replicate of the ExoMars rover was remotely operated from Oxfordshire (United Kingdom) to perform a complex sequence of scientific operation at the Tabernas Desert (Spain). By following the ExoMars Reference Surface Mission (RSM), the rover investigated the Badlands subsoil and collected drill cores, whose analytical study was entrusted to the RLS (Raman Laser Spectrometer) team. The preliminary characterization of core samples was performed in-situ through the RLS Engineering and Qualification Model (EQM-2) and the Raman Demonstrator (RAD1), being this a new, portable emulator of the RLS. In-situ results where then complemented by laboratory analysis using the RLS ExoMars simulator and the commercial version of the Curiosity/CheMin XRD system. Raman data, obtained by closely simulating the operational constraints of the mission, successfully disclosed the mineralogical composition of the samples, reaching the detection of minor/trace phases that were not detected by XRD. More importantly, Raman analysis detected many organic functional groups, proving the presence of extremophile organisms in the arid sub-surface of the Tabernas Desert. In light of the forthcoming ExoMars mission, the results here presented proves that RLS could play a critical role in the characterization of Martian sub-surface environments and in the analytical detection of potential traces of live tracers., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

Abstract

The method of moments is a classical statistical technique for density estimation that solves a system of moment equations to estimate the parameters of an unknown distribution. A fundamental question critical to understanding identifiability asks how many moment equations are needed to get finitely many solutions and how many solutions there are. We answer this question for classes of Gaussian mixture models using the tools of polyhedral geometry. In addition, we show that a generic Gaussian $k$-mixture model is identifiable from its first $3k+2$ moments. Using these results, we present a homotopy algorithm that performs parameter recovery for high dimensional Gaussian mixture models where the number of paths tracked scales linearly in the dimension., Comment: 39 pages

Abstract

We perform a detailed computational study of the recently introduced Sombor indices on random graphs. Specifically, we apply Sombor indices on three models of random graphs: Erd\"os-R\'enyi graphs, random geometric graphs, and bipartite random graphs. Within a statistical random matrix theory approach, we show that the average values of Sombor indices, normalized to the order of the graph, scale with the graph average degree. Moreover, we discuss the application of average Sombor indices as complexity measures of random graphs and, as a consequence, we show that selected normalized Sombor indices are highly correlated with the Shannon entropy of the eigenvectors of the graph adjacency matrix., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

A large number of graph invariants of the form $\sum_{uv \in E(G)} F(d_u,d_v)$ are studied in mathematical chemistry, where $uv$ denotes the edge of the graph $G$ connecting the vertices $u$ and $v$, and $d_u$ is the degree of the vertex $u$. Among them the variable inverse sum deg index $ISD_a$, with $F(d_u,d_v)=1/(d_u^a+d_v^a)$, was found to have applicative properties. The aim of this paper is to obtain new inequalities for the variable inverse sum deg index, and to characterize graphs extremal with respect to them. Some of these inequalities generalize and improve previous results for the inverse sum deg index. Here, the authors report the results of their investigation of a tomb newly discovered at the site of Piedras Blancas at the foot of La Pena de los Enamorados, a limestone massif that dominates the Antequera plain. Excavation and multidisciplinary study, including geological, architectural and archaeoastronomical investigations, have revealed a complex funerary monument that is part natural, part built, part hypogeum, part megalith, The results emphasise that centrality of La Pena in the Neolithic worldview and encourage wider investigation of prehistoric place-making.
