Decades of expansion in European higher education have led to the need to cater to an increasingly diverse student population in a more economical and efficient way. The realities of mass higher education have resulted in major transformations, with visible changes in the modes and instruments of regulation and a greater emphasis on market forces and institutional competition. In this article we reflect about the relevance of those changes from a regional point of view, especially by looking at the public–private mix of higher education and the way those regulatory changes may have influenced patterns of spatial and programmatic diversification across a sample of European countries. The expansion of higher education systems has often been associated with the need for increasing diversification, namely at the program level, based on the pressures to adapt more general programmes to a more diverse student population and multiple regional, social, and economic needs. This paper explores empirically the question of programme diversity by drawing on the Portuguese higher education' experience, which presented massive expansion during the last decades and significant institutional competition in recent years. The study provides a longitudinal approach and analyzes in detail the evolution of diversification and specialization of the public and private sectors, as well as the university and polytechnic subsectors. The analysis aims at helping to illustrate the relevance of analysing diversity from an empirical point of view and its contribution to our understanding of the complex relationships between competition and diversity in contemporary higher education. The dominant issue in recent years in public higher education's funding has been that of financial stringency, with growing pressures towards revenue diversification. This has been followed by debates about possible differentiation in the way public institutions are funded and about the advantages and risks of concentrating resources in a few institutions. In this chapter we analyse the Portuguese experience with cost-sharing to analyse some major factors - besides the total number of enrolments - that may explain the ability of public higher education institutions to accumulate more revenues through tuition fees. The results do not seem to confirm the existence of a socalled Matthew effect in the distribution of those revenues. Our analysis instead highlights that revenues from tuition fees have been particularly important for those institutions with lower research-intensity and with a more specialised programmatic offer. Our results also point out possible tensions in the current pattern of funding in Portuguese public higher education, notably in the current environment of crisis and financial retrenchment. 177. Hiring in Entrepreneurial Firms: Pre-Founding Affiliations & the Origins of Organizational Diversity.

- Abstract
New ventures typically have few resources and rarely have formal human resource processes, calling into question how these entrepreneurial firms find early employees critical to their success. Additionally, entrepreneurial hiring practices set the trajectory of how workforce composition is built in a growing organization. A common, informal tactic in young firms for finding workers is the use of incumbent workers' prior affiliations (employment and educational), an expedient practice though one that may limit a new venture's workforce diversity. Our study examines when young firms engage in such affiliation-based hiring and its implications for demographic diversity. Using a representative sample of new ventures drawn from Danish matched employer-employee data, we find that larger founding teams with greater internal social tie depth are more likely to hire from founders' prior affiliations. Our results further suggest that affiliation-based hiring reinforces demographic homophily, contrasting with diversity imperatives as firms grow. Our work provides insights to hiring processes in entrepreneurial firms and the enigmatic origins of diversity differences between firms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

178. Startup Experience and the Mobilization of Human Capital Resources in New Ventures.

- Abstract
Human capital resources are a foundation of organizational performance, yet highly difficult to mobilize in new ventures. Given the central role of founders' past experiences in new venture strategy formation, we investigate whether and how their prior startup experience influences employee mobilization, depending on the outcomes of earlier endeavors. Integrating behavioral theories of the firm with regulatory focus theory, we suggest that serial founders who failed earlier are more likely to be prevention oriented and change their employee mobilization strategies towards a more targeted hiring approach. Using Danish register data, we compare the employee sourcing practices of a sample of serial entrepreneurs to a control group of novice founders who later engage in serial venturing. We find suggestive evidence of trial-and-error learning in hiring strategies among serial entrepreneurs who have discontinued previous ventures. Alternative mechanisms such as selection effects, stigma of failure, and demand-side constraints, are also tested but not empirically supported. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

179. Refugee Human Capital and Firm Performance.

- Abstract
The availability of employment is a central determinant for addressing the refugee crisis in many host countries. Extant management research largely assumes that hiring refugees is part of firms' social responsibility since the knowledge and skills of refugees are too generic to produce positive performance effects. We challenge this perspective and offer a theoretical logic for how the generic human capital of refugees results in superior performance for the hiring firm. We theorize that the performance potentials from hiring refugees emerge because of value capture mechanisms. Within our reasoning, refugees have limited opportunities to bargain for higher salaries, due to demand frictions stemming from uncertainty, stereotypes, or discrimination by other potential employers. Moreover, we theorize that firm-specific incentives make employers that offer job security and social connections more appealing to refugees and, thus, enable their employers to capture value from their generic human capital. In line with our theoretical predictions, we find, for 176,792 firms and 10,338 refugees between 2001 and 2016 in Denmark, that firms hiring refugees have higher profitability and this effect is amplified for employers offering job security and the opportunity for bonding relationships with refugee co-workers. - Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the cognitive and clinical evolution of post-acute stroke patients and the evolution of each Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) item. A longitudinal study was conducted with 42 poststroke individuals in rehabilitation. The MMSE and the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale were used to assess cognition and stroke severity. Significant evolution in MMSE was found only for schooled individuals, total MMSE (P0.008), spatial orientation (P0.010) and language (P0.010). Significant improvement was observed in clinical severity for both schooled and illiterate individuals (P<0.001). Relation between cognitive and clinical evolution showed significance only for the schooled individuals (r−0.47; P0.01). These findings showed a favorable improvement in the cognitive evolution of poststroke schooled individuals in the first 6 months, in addition to a relationship between clinical severity and cognition, and evidenced the necessity of cognitive rehabilitation.

181. Start-Up Competences and Early Stage Hiring: A Contingency Perspective.
- Author

- Abstract
Early employment growth can be a stepping-stone for start-up scaling. Yet, we have little insights into the factors that can enable early stage hiring. Building on competence-based theory, we posit that initial competences, namely those assembled via founders' start-up experience and external shareholders, can help start-ups overcome early staffing challenges. However, through a contingency perspective, we demonstrate that a start-up's ability to leverage those initial competences and hire soon after entry is contingent on its strategic orientation towards innovation. Both internal and external competences are likely to be underutilized in less R&D intensive start-ups lacking innovation-based growth aspirations. We find general support for our hypotheses with a rich dataset of Italian innovative start-ups, and additionally show that early staff recruitment is largely characterized by (positive) assortative matching dynamics in the human capital attributes of the demand and supply sides. 182. We're Hiring! Entrepreneur Characteristics and Talent Sorting in Innovative Startups.

- Abstract
As extensively reiterated in the existing literature, entrepreneurs' human capital is crucial for new venture survival and growth. However, little is known about what makes startups more attractive for high quality employees. Drawing upon the resource-based view, this paper analyses the relationship between founders' characteristics and the presence of non-founding employees. We examine this link based on a unique dataset of Italian innovative startups built form a survey administered in 2016. First, we find that entrepreneurial teams endowed with greater human capital ' in particular prior entrepreneurial experience ' are more likely to attract talent in early stages, especially in more innovative firms. Second, founding motivations matter. Necessity-driven entrepreneurs are less likely to have non-founding employees, regardless the technology intensity of their business. Finally, the results confirm the existence of a positive sorting between entrepreneurs and employees in terms of talent: more experienced and skilled entrepreneurs are more likely to be matched with more talented 'joiners', while the opposite is true for necessity-driven entrepreneurs. We discuss implications for research as well as policy makers concerned with the role of entrepreneurs' human capital in the hiring process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Higher Education institutions face today a demanding and complex context in which they are asked to fulfill multiple roles. Many of these challenges have to be faced in a complex financial context in which traditional modes of funding have been transformed and public sources are not as generous as they often were in the past. Like in many other public services, in recent years it became a rather common statement that Higher Education institutions should be more efficient in the use of taxpayers’ resources, which had a clear impact in visible changes in the funding of public Higher Education in Europe. In this paper we will analyse the major trends in Higher Education funding in Europe and underline to what extent the current debates about Higher Education and its funding have been significantly influenced by economic considerations. We will identify some of the main issues that dominate the current debate around Higher Education’s funding, drawing some comparative insights from developments across Europe Las instituciones de Educación Superior están involucradas en un contexto complejo y exigente en el que tienen que hacer frente a múltiples demandas.
184. New Venture Pipeline Hiring and Its Performance Implications.
- Author

Rocha, Vera and Brymer, Rhett Andrew
- Abstract
The human capital of the founding team provides a basis for how the organization is designed and structured, and this founding team imprint influences future resource acquisition due to the path dependency inherent in such decisions. Extending this logic, a founding team's imprint will partially determine how a firm orchestrates the accumulation of one of its most critical resources - its human capital. However, research to date has not considered the effect of founding team characteristics on staffing strategies specifically, neither has prior literature advanced our knowledge on how (certain) early hiring choices affect new venture performance. This gap is surprising, since hiring soon after a firm founding is especially critical to sustained success. We propose that pipeline hiring - i.e., repeated hiring from various source organizations - might be a strategy considered by startups, with important implications for their future performance. In this paper, we investigate the antecedents and consequences of pipeline hiring in new ventures. We theorize that founding teams with higher shared (employment and educational) affiliations will engage in more pipeline hiring, and that the benefits of this hiring practice will beget improved firm performance. Using a sample of about 8,300 new ventures founded in Denmark, and over 150,000 employees joining these firms, we find broad support for our theory. We then explore the underlying mechanisms and boundary conditions for the positive relationship between new venture pipeline hiring and future performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

185. Entrepreneurial beginning, happy ending?Entrepreneurship upon graduation and lifetime earnings.

- Abstract
Recent studies comparing lifetime earnings of individuals with and without entrepreneurial experience have chal-lenged the previously stylized fact that entrepreneurship yields lower and riskier earnings. We contribute to the ex-tant understanding of the relationship between entrepreneurial experience and lifetime earnings in three ways. First, we analyze the role of the timing of entrepreneurship within a professional career by exploring whether entrepreneur-ship influences lifetime earnings differently when it happens at the beginning of the career rather than later. Second, we add to the topic of the value of experimenting in entrepreneurship by considering the relationship between the duration of the entrepreneurial spell and lifetime earnings. Last, we focus exclusively on university graduates, which represent a part of the population with high entrepreneurial potential. Using register data from the population of Denmark, we compare lifetime earnings of graduates who start their careers as entrepreneurs ("early entrepreneurs"), graduates who start as wage-employees but become entrepreneurs later in their careers ("late entrepreneurs"), and graduates who never become entrepreneurs ("never entrepreneurs"). Thanks to the richness of our data, we are able to track the careers and earnings of such graduates during their first 15 years in the labor market. Results from matched samples show an interesting picture. Consistent with recent research, a premium for individuals who ever become entrepreneurs is also present in our sample. Importantly, we find that early entrepreneurs are better-off than never entrepreneurs when they switch quickly to wage-employment after a brief experimentation period in entrepre-neurship, or when they are able to run long-lived successful firms. However, attempting entrepreneurship later in the career seems to be the best alternative in terms of risk-reward. Several mechanisms driving these results as well as their potential implications are further discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

187. How do Entrepreneurial Bosses Influence their Employees' Future Entrepreneurship Choices?
- Author

- Abstract
We adopt a process-based approach to investigate the influence of entrepreneurial bosses on the two main decisions of employees towards becoming entrepreneurs: exit from the current firm and entry into entrepreneurship. In other words, we study the push and pull mechanisms possibly underlying the influence of entrepreneurial bosses. We do so by employing an identification strategy based on comparisons of same-gender matches of bosses and employees, using rich register data for Denmark. We show that same-gender entrepreneurial bosses have a great impact on employees' future entrepreneurship choices, especially among women. We do not find any evidence that female bosses push female employees out of the workplace, by creating a discriminatory environment that forces them to search for alternative career paths. Instead, our analysis finds consistent support for pull mechanisms, with role modeling being the main explanation for the positive influence of female entrepreneurial bosses on female employees' transition into entrepreneurship. We show that the female boss effect is greater than other social interactions identified in prior research. We conclude that entrepreneurial bosses can be role models and female entrepreneurial bosses may thus act as a lever to reducing gender gaps in entrepreneurship rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior This research started with an investigation about the theatrical speaking. Through an empirical methodology that analyzed a practical experience of creating a play and bibliographical research, the actress/researcher investigated ways to manipulate musical parameters as tools in the creation process of the actor s voice. The actress/researcher attempted to connect theory and practice, moved by the desire to find a vocal expression in theater that unfolds as living and transforming movement. This dissertation also contains the report of pedagogical experiences, in which the actress/researcher explored strategies to teach the appropriation of musical parameters in the construction of the vocal work of the actor. Considering that speaking in theater is closer to singing than everyday speech, she concluded that the actor may compose music as a music composer does in the elaborating process of building vocal scores. Therefore, she demonstrated that it is of fundamental importance a musical training in the development of the actor.

The focus of this research is in the group as a device for the professors learning in superior education and for their practice. This study is in the Formation Research Line, Knowledge and Professional development of the Post-graduation Program on Education of the Federal University of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul state. The objectives of the study development were: to understand the constitution of a reflexive group as a device for the professors learning in the superior education, to identify the constructive movements of this group, to analyze how the construction of the professors learning occurs from a reflexive group and to investigate that the learning occurs from it. During the development of this thesis it was aimed to answer the following statements: How a reflexive group thought to be a device for learning in the superior education is made? The experience of making part of a reflexive group stimulates the construction of the professors learning? What learning comes from a reflexive group? To answer these questions it was used a qualitative and narrative methodological approach (CLANDININ e CONNELY, 1995). It was developed from fifteen meetings of a group of sixteen professors of a Physics Therapy course from a Confessional Superior Institution in the inland of Rio Grande do Sul state. The instrument for the data collection was a field diary and the professors adopted the class diary as a tool for generating reflection in the group. Another instrument, used as a propellant of the reflection of professors, was their experiences, being these planned and organized for the meetings. The meetings were recorded, written, made unique and categorized for the discursive textual analysis (MORAES and GAGLIAZZI, 2007). The track allowed the identification, at first, of the real group dynamic involving three constructive movements: (1) the initial articulation, (2) approximations and removals and (3) reflexive continuum . For the understanding and the interpretation of this stage, the readings that became references of analysis and understanding are based on Lewin s books (1948; 1965), Ferry (2004; 1976), Josso (2004), Cunha (2006; 2008), Souto (2007) and Oliveira (2009); for the group, Dewey (1976; 1965; 1959) Schön (2000) and Zeichner (1993, 2008); for the reflexive professor, together with Zabalza (2004) e Nóvoa (1992, 2007). The group as a device for the learning is in the description, interpretation and discussion of the categories the emerged from the group: (1) simplification of the professors learning, (2) the manifestation of consciousness about being a professor and (3), the (re)meaning of professors learning. For the discussion about learning how to be a professor, the references of Vygotsky (1995; 1989; 1982), Leontiev (1984), Vygotsky, Lúria e Leontiev (1989), Cunha (2001, 2005, 2006, 2008), Isaia (2006, 2008), Isaia e Bolzan (2007, 2004), Bolzan (2002, 2006) and Maciel (2006) are highlighted. The group is a learning device from the understanding that this learning passes by the personal relations that exist in the superior teaching along with the place where this learning happens. It finishes with the reflection about the elements that are specific and contextual of the superior teaching. The professors learning is, thus, a interpersonal and intrapersonal process which is fruitful in the group context once it happens in a motivational and sharing environment, which promotes transformation in the feeling, in thinking and in acting by the professors. O percurso trilhado permitiu identificar, primeiramente, a dinâmica grupal envolvendo três movimentos construtivos: (1) articulação inicial, (2) aproximações e afastamentos e (3) continuum reflexivo.

Health is part of several factors involving social, cultural, biological, psychological processes that constitute people giving rise to their choices, paths, and disagreements. The aim of this study was to know the organization of health services and the trajectory of SUS in the search of care in physical therapy in Porto Alegre / RS and what is the users' perception on health and the reality of physical therapy they enjoy. This study is exploratory, descriptive, qualitative and is divided into two themes: the organizational situation of health services from physical therapy and perceptions of users on this service. The results about the organizational process were from the Department of SUS (DATASUS) with the Planning Office (ASSEPLA) in the Municipal Health Department of Porto Alegre / RS. To compose the information regarding the perceptions of users, 12 users took part attached in four health districts units from two health units that use and users that are waiting for physiotherapy and rehabilitation services were referred by the health clinics. We use a semi-structured interview aiming to know and interpret the trajectory of care in physical therapy in 4 axes that emerged from the speech: perceptions of health and physical therapy, concepts and users' perceptions about health and illness; paths and (mis) direction related to health care: perceptions and pathways in physiotherapy. The interviews were analyzed through the content analysis and it wa used records and written comments done during the course of the study. The main points that define health for users of physical therapy are the ability to keep working, no pain, return to daily activities and physical and emotional balance. The understanding that users had about physiotherapy refers to pain relief, care that is presented in a fragmented and disintegrated and the services are located far from their homes. One of these problems concerns the difficulty in transportation and is considered a deterrent and bureaucratic process for treatment. We realize that health is still centered in the absence of disease, so that users know in part the role of physiotherapy and link it to physical and biological aspects. The paths traversed by users reflects a lack of continuity or a line of care by the services, because they end up struggling for access, there is still a great standby for the services that offer physical therapy, while those who access it can receive treatment in most cases focused on technique and decontextualized of complexity that involves life.

Leisure activities are known and widespread as essential practices for a better quality of life and, for the young population development process. This thesis was to analyze the leisure activities of young high school students of Eldorado do Sul/RS. We attempted to identify possible associations between categories of leisure activities and the youth of urban and rural areas; among the categories of leisure activities and genders and between the categories of leisure activities and young people who only study and those who study and work. A non-probabilistic sample was composed of 298 young people of both sexes, aged 15 and 24, who attended high school in the state schools of the public network of Eldorado do Sul at the end of 2009. With descriptive approach, the study used as a research tool questionnaire called Map Leisure Youth, used by the Center for Research in Public Policy Sport and Leisure City - Nupe City/UFRGS (Núcleo de Pesquisa em Políticas Públicas de Esporte e Lazer da Cidade - NUPÉ da Cidade/UFRGS). For the treatment of the data was used descriptive statistics with absolute values and percentages and for the association analysis used the inferential statistics, in applying the chi-square test, with a 5% significance level. All analyzes were performed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) for Windows, version 18.0. The results showed that leisure activities held more frequently by young students at the end studied week were the Domestic Leisure activities subsequently the Social and Family Activities and then the Physical Activities and Sports. The categories of leisure activities were not associated with young students living in the urban and rural area of the municipality, either, to young people who only study and young people who study and work. The Boys category was associated with and physical education and the Girls category was associated with social activities and family, cultural activities and entertainment and religious activities. The leisure choices of young people, the results suggest that sports and cultural facilities available not fully contemplate the needs of young audience; information technology have attracted young people into their homes; relations between the youth of urban and rural facilitate the mutual influence between cultures and practices of both regions; boys develop much of their leisure activities outside the home, while the girls have their circulation areas linked to residence; most of the activities carried out by young students not spent funds; public facilities and some municipal events are offered free to the community. The distinctive leisure preferences of young high school students Public Network Eldorado do Sul municipality reinforce the idea that youths are manifold. When working with public policies for young people, the public sector should consider the youth category encompasses a number of peculiarities that make up young people as individuals with the capacity to express their interests and their groups regarding leisure.

Fundação Cearense de Apoio ao Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnológico The work aims to investigate some of the educational actions developed in the differentiated Tapeba schools (CE), in their pedagogical practices. The reading of these practices as ritual of ethnic cultural resistance is accomplished by the approach of studies of experience and performance in the anthropology, as well as, the analytical perspective suggested by the dramaturgy ideas and social drama. So, taking a critical approach of the school, that conceives it, while time space privileged of possibilities of political social change, this work searches to notice the means of achievement of a differentiated education. I aim at, with that, to observe the ritual moments and performáticos of the pedagogic practices of Tapeba while important political-symbolic expressions of your collective experiences, looking at the process of construction of legitimacy of the school differentiated as scenery of creation of pedagogic rituals of resistance. Then, the Cultural Fair, Tapeba Indian Games, the Walking of Tapeba Indian`s Day and Carnauba Party by one side and the Cultural Classes, by another, promote a re-thinking on the experiences of Tapeba ethnicity, distinguishing also, in this process of identity affirmation, the political pedagogical role fulfilled by land re-taking. Finally, this work makes clear that Tapeba prove to be individuals with rights and at the same time they want to legitimate their differentiated school practices, Tapeba construct the meaning of their social actions in the educative and in other aspects of their communitarian living as well O trabalho tem como unidade de investigação algumas das ações educativas desenvolvidas nas escolas diferenciadas Tapeba (CE), observando as manipulações táticas e estratégicas do tema do preconceito em suas práticas pedagógicas.

This study had a multidisciplinary focus, investigating the areas of health and education, and proposes to discuss the formation of health professionals, requiring their understanding of the factors involved in the production of knowledge, given that this formation has an impact on the quality of human and social life. The aim of this work was to investigate the relationship existing between the process of physical therapist formation and the practical activities developed during the undergraduate course in the Northeast of Brazil. This is an exploratory descriptive study with qualitative significance. The sample consisted of 73 subjects (33 professors and 40 students) from 6 physical therapy courses at different institutions in the Northeast of Brazil. Data collection was conducted through focus group interviews. In addition, we used a school assessment instrument from the health area. The data, analyzed using dialectical hermeneutics, showed that the Northeast of Brazil has the second largest number of physical therapy courses in the country, with 93 (11 public and 82 private) out of a total of 510. These numbers represent a growth of 1062.5% since 1991. The pedagogical projects are guided by National Curricular Directives as well as by the country s health system. The prevalent pedagogy is that of transmission, and the contents/disciplines are generally not integrated with practice, a situation that hinders the integrality and interdisciplinarity of health care. It can be concluded that there is a need for implementing integrated curricula and for better qualified professors to effectively put this process into practice Este estudo teve um enfoque multidisciplinar, ao abranger as áreas da educação e da saúde, e se propôs a discutir a formação dos profissionais de saúde, exigindo uma compreensão dos fatores que a envolvem para a produção do conhecimento, uma vez que reflete essa formação na qualidade de vida humana e social.

Using a qualitative approach, this study identifies the main characteristics of the 27 Physical Therapy courses in the State of Rio Grande do Sul and discusses the process of physical therapist formation in this State based on the discourse of Physical Therapy course coordinators on practices developed during the formation. To do so, a descriptive study was carried out based on data available at Anísio Teixeira Brazilian Institute of Studies and Research, such as administrative category, number of hours, region of coverage, time of course existence, among others. A semi-structured interview was also performed, including five course coordinators and a coordination representative, who reported on the academic formation of physical therapists in their teaching institutions and on the relationship between the process of Physical Therapy formation and the Brazilian Unified Health System. Interview data were analyzed in terms of qualitative aspects through discourse analysis. Analyzed elements are relative to general formation characteristics, curricular structures, pedagogical practices, practice scenarios and perspectives related to integrality of care. Results about the 27 courses showed that 75% of courses are in the private sector; number of vacancies is between 30 and 120; number of hours ranges between 3,540 and 4,865 hours; and there was an 80% increase in number of courses over the past seven years, in addition to other findings. Interview results point to a prevalence of transformation movements within courses, most of which seem to be concerned about following some orientations of Curricular Guidelines. Traditional characteristics include course organization by disciplines, communication difficulty between knowledge areas and dichotomy between theory and practice and between teaching and service. On the other hand, some courses showed new teaching methodologies, widening of practice scenarios, concern about skills and competences that include humanization, and search for horizontality in health actions. It can be concluded that major transformations have been occurring within such scenario of tensions established in the process of changes; however, there are signs indicating that there is much to be done toward a physical therapy formation coherent with the current social needs.
