Objective: In this work, we assess the potential of computer vision techniques for age estimation of Gulf Menhaden Brevoortia patronus scales. Scales are the primary structure used for the age determination of Gulf Menhaden, and the ageing process can be labor intensive. Gulf Menhaden is the second‐largest fishery by weight in the United States, with average annual landings from 2018 to 2022 of 449,540 metric tons, and is assessed with age‐structured models that require information about the age structure of the catch and the stock. Methods: We used convolutional neural networks and deep neural networks to classify the age from images of Gulf Menhaden scales from three different sets of images of scales. The first set of data consists of images of scales from fish at ages 0 and 1 year. The second set of data consists of images of scales from fish at ages 0–4 years. The last set of data consists of images of scales from fish of ages 0, 1, and 2 years and includes only images of scales for which there is agreement by readers of age estimates derived from analyzing sagittal otoliths and scales from the same individual. Result: The classification of ages was best when using a convolutional neural network model on the first data set. The poorest classification was for the model using deep neural networks with the second data set. Conclusion: Although we show that computer vision has promise for age determination from fish scale samples, our results indicate that considerable work must be done for wide adoption of the approach. With the continuous enhancements of computer vision models, improvements in the quality of scale images, and the accumulation of larger sets of scale images that can be used to train machine learning models, we believe that using computer vision can serve to reduce processing time and increase the accuracy of age estimates. Two new fusarochromanone derivatives, deacetylfusarochromene (1) and deacetamidofusarochrom-2′,3-diene (2), along with the previously reported metabolites fusarochromanone TDP-2 (3), fusarochromene (4), 2,2-dimethyl-5-amino-6-(2′E-ene-4′-hydroxylbutyryl)-4-chromone (5), fusarochromanone (6), (−)-chrysogine (7), and equisetin (8), were isolated from the marine fungus Fusarium equiseti UBOCC-A-117302. The structures of the compounds were determined by extensive spectrometric (HRMS) and spectroscopic (1D and 2D NMR) analyses, as well as specific rotation. Among them, 2 and 5 showed inhibition of three protein kinases with IC50 values ranging from 1.42 to 25.48 μM. Cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activity of all isolated compounds were also evaluated. Six fusarochromanone derivatives (1–6) exhibited diverse activities against three cell lines, RPE-1, HCT-116, and U2OS (IC50 values ranging from 0.058 to 84.380 μM). Equisetin (8) showed bactericidal activities against Bacillus cereus and Listeria monocytogenes (MBC values of 7.8 and 31.25 µM, respectively), and bacteriostatic activity against Enterococcus faecalis (MIC value of 31.25 µM). Semantic memory underpins our understanding of objects, people, places, and ideas. Anomia, a disruption of semantic memory access, is the most common residual language disturbance and is seen in dementia and following injury to temporal cortex. While such anomia has been well characterized by lesion symptom mapping studies, its pathophysiology is not well understood. We hypothesize that inputs to the semantic memory system engage a specific heteromodal network hub that integrates lexical retrieval with the appropriate semantic content. Such a network hub has been proposed by others, but has thus far eluded precise spatiotemporal delineation. This limitation in our understanding of semantic memory has impeded progress in the treatment of anomia. We evaluated the cortical structure and dynamics of the lexical semantic network in driving speech production in a large cohort of patients with epilepsy using electrocorticography (n = 64), functional MRI (n = 36), and direct cortical stimulation (n = 30) during two generative language processes that rely on semantic knowledge: visual picture naming and auditory naming to definition. Each task also featured a non-semantic control condition: scrambled pictures and reversed speech, respectively. These large-scale data of the left, language-dominant hemisphere uniquely enable convergent, high-resolution analyses of neural mechanisms characterized by rapid, transient dynamics with strong interactions between distributed cortical substrates. We observed three stages of activity during both visual picture naming and auditory naming to definition that were serially organized: sensory processing, lexical semantic processing, and articulation. Critically, the second stage was absent in both the visual and auditory control conditions. Group activity maps from both electrocorticography and functional MRI identified heteromodal responses in middle fusiform gyrus, intraparietal sulcus, and inferior frontal gyrus; furthermore, the spectrotemporal profiles of these three regions revealed coincident activity preceding articulation. Only in the middle fusiform gyrus did direct cortical stimulation disrupt both naming tasks while still preserving the ability to repeat sentences. These convergent data strongly support a model in which a distinct neuroanatomical substrate in middle fusiform gyrus provides access to object semantic information. This under-appreciated locus of semantic processing is at risk in resections for temporal lobe epilepsy as well as in trauma and strokes that affect the inferior temporal cortex-it may explain the range of anomic states seen in these conditions. Further characterization of brain network behaviour engaging this region in both healthy and diseased states will expand our understanding of semantic memory and further development of therapies directed at anomia.

Background In chronic intermittent hemodialysis, heparin is the standard anticoagulant as is the use of acid-containing dialysate. Regional anticoagulation (RA) with a calcium-free, citrate-containing dialysate has been developed. We compared RA using a calcium-free, citrate-free dialysate, routinely used in our center, versus systemic heparinization. Methods In a retrospective, observational, single-center, crossover study, we examined 15 patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis who were at high risk of bleeding and temporarily unable to use heparin. These patients received temporary treatment with RA involving calcium-free and citrate-free dialysate. We compared the dialysis session success rates during two distinct periods: standard heparinization and RA procedure with a calcium-free and citrate-free dialysate. Results In our study of 15 patients on chronic hemodialysis which compared 30 RA sessions versus 28 heparin-based anticoagulation session, we observed a 100% success rate with a median session duration of 240 min in both RA and heparin groups. No early extracorporeal circulation (ECC) loss was reported. However, we noted significant differences in the post-dialysis ECC thrombosis scores, with higher Global Thrombosis Index (GTI) and higher membrane coagulation scores in the RA group (P < .007 and P < .02, respectively). No hypocalcaemia or hypercalcemia symptoms occurred. Median post-filter ionized calcium levels were 0.32 (0.29–0.39) mmol/L at 30 min and median patient ionized calcium levels was 1.19 (1.135–1.28) mmol/L at 60 min. No significant difference in per-dialysis arterial blood pressure was observed between groups. Conclusion Our study evaluated the RA approach using a calcium-free, citrate-free acetate dialysate in a chronic hemodialysis center and found it effective. Although an acid-free dialysate was not used in this study, our findings suggest it could be the next frontier in the evolution of advanced dialysis techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aircraft systems development is complex and time‐consuming. Model‐based Product Line Engineering (MBPLE) aims to reuse assets between projects to accelerate the development of systems at their early stage. Despite guidance from standards, MBPLE practitioners still face the challenge of deploying an appropriate configuration management strategy. This paper presents and demonstrates a configuration management strategy to support practitioners deploying MBPLE for aircraft systems development. We developed this strategy to comply with ISO/IEC 26580 and address pending standard ambiguities using best practices from product lines for systems, software, business processes, and systems of systems. The proposed strategy supports long‐term product line evolution, management of different asset types, and independent product environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
