Abstract

ABSTRACT In 2015, two new species related to the Staphylococcus aureus were proposed. We describe five isolates of the new species Staphylococcus argenteus cultured from human cases of bacteremia and skin and soft tissue infections. This is the first report of S. argenteus, from South America, causing community-acquired and nosocomial infections.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the epidemiology and 30-day mortality of adult patients with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia. We retrospectively reviewed the demographic and clinical data of adult patients with S. aureus bloodstream infections (BSI), admitted to a tertiary public teaching medical center in Porto Alegre, Southern Brazil, from January 2014 to December 2019. A total of 928 patients with S. aureus BSI were identified in the study period (68.5 per 100,000 patient-years), and the proportion of MRSA isolates was 22% (19-27%). Thus, 199 patients were included in the analyses. The median age was 62 (IQR: 51-74) years, Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) median was 5 (IQR: 3-6), the Pitt bacteremia score (PBS) median was 1 (IQR: 1-4), and the most common site of infection was skin and soft tissue (26%). Most infections were hospital-acquired (54%), empirical anti-MRSA treatment was initiated in 34% of the cases, and in 44% vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentration was 1.5mg/L or above. Sixty-two (31.2%) patients died up to 30 days after the bacteremia episode. Abstract

IntroductionWomen play an essential role in health care delivery, and it is vital that they have equal representation in health leadership for equity, innovation, and the strengthening of health systems globally. Yet women remain vastly underrepresented in global health leadership positions, providing a clear example of the deeply rooted power imbalances that are central to the calls to decolonize global health. We conducted a multi-country study in Haiti, Tanzania, India, and the USA to examine gender-based challenges to career advancement for women in the global health workforce. Quantitative data on the type and prevalence of gender-based challenges has been previously reported. In this study, we analyze qualitative data collected through focus group discussions and in-depth interviews to understand women's experiences of gender-based obstacles to career advancement, their perceptions of underlying drivers, and perspectives on effective solutions. Guided by an adaptation of the Social Action Theory, we conducted focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with women at 4 major academic centers for clinical care and research in Haiti, India, Tanzania, and the United States. In total, 85 women participated in focus groups and 15 also participated in in-depth interviews. Discussions and interviews were conducted in the local language, by an experienced local facilitator unaffiliated with the participating institution, between 2017 and 2018. Discussions were recorded, transcribed, and translated. Data were analyzed by interpretive phenomenological methods for emergent themes. Three transcendent themes on gender-based challenges were identified: 1) cultural power imbalance, referring to the prevailing norms and engrained assumptions that women are less capable than men and that women's primary responsibility should be to their families; 2) institutional power imbalance, referring to the systematic gender bias upheld by existing leadership and power structures, and ranging from exclusion from career development opportunities to sexual harassment and assault; and 3) restricted agency, referring to women's limited ability to change their circumstances because of unequal cultural and institutional structures. Participants also described local, actionable solutions to address these barriers. These included: 1) formal reporting systems for sexual harassment and assault; 2) peer support and mentorship; and 3) accessible leadership training and mandatory gender equity training. Participants proposed feasible strategies to address gender-based challenges that could improve women's retention in health careers and foster their rise to leadership. Increasing the representation of women in global health leadership positions responds directly to efforts to decolonize global health and is integral to strengthening health systems and improving health outcomes for women and children worldwide.

Abstract

Microalgae are an attractive feedstock organism for sustainable production of biofuels, chemicals, and biomaterials, but the ability to rationally engineer microalgae to enhance production has been limited. To enable the evolution-based selection of new hyperproducing variants of microalgae, a method is developed that combines phase-transitioning monodisperse gelatin hydrogel droplets with commercial flow cytometric instruments for high-throughput screening and selection of clonal populations of cells with desirable properties, such as high lipid productivity per time traced over multiple cell cycles. It is found that gelatin microgels enable i) the growth and metabolite (e.g., chlorophyll and lipids) production of single microalgal cells within the compartments, ii) infusion of fluorescent reporter molecules into the hydrogel matrices following a sol-gel transition, iii) selection of high-producing clonal populations of cells using flow cytometry, and iv) cell recovery under mild conditions, enabling regrowth after sorting. This user-friendly method is easily integratable into directed cellular evolution pipelines for strain improvement and can be adopted for other applications that require high-throughput processing, e.g., cellular secretion phenotypes and intercellular interactions.

Abstract

The Efficient Global Optimization (EGO) algorithm uses a conditional Gaus-sian Process (GP) to approximate an objective function known at a finite number of observation points and sequentially adds new points which maximize the Expected Improvement criterion according to the GP. The important factor that controls the efficiency of EGO is the GP covariance function (or kernel) which should be chosen according to the objective function. Traditionally, a pa-rameterized family of covariance functions is considered whose parameters are learned through statistical procedures such as maximum likelihood or cross-validation. However, it may be questioned whether statistical procedures for learning covariance functions are the most efficient for optimization as they target a global agreement between the GP and the observations which is not the ultimate goal of optimization. Furthermore, statistical learning procedures are computationally expensive. The main alternative to the statistical learning of the GP is self-adaptation, where the algorithm tunes the kernel parameters based on their contribution to objective function improvement. After questioning the possibility of self-adaptation for kriging based optimizers, this paper proposes a novel approach for tuning the length-scale of the GP in EGO: At each iteration, a small ensemble of kriging models structured by their length-scales is created. All of the models contribute to an iterate in an EGO-like fashion. Then, the set of models is densified around the model whose length-scale yielded the best iterate and further points are produced. Numerical experiments are provided which motivate the use of many length-scales. The tested implementation does not perform better than the classical EGO algorithm in a sequential context but show the potential of the approach for parallel implementations.

In this paper we prove equivalences of categories relating the derived category of a block of the category of representations of a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$ bigger than the Coxeter number and a derived category of equivariant coherent sheaves on the Springer resolution (or a parabolic counterpart). In the case of the principal block, combined with previous results, this provides a modular version of celebrated constructions due to Arkhipov-Bezrukavnikov-Ginzburg for Lusztig's quantum groups at a root of unity. Abstract

Gaussian Processes (GPs) are a popular approach to predict the output of a parameterized experiment. They have many applications in the field of Computer Experiments, in particular to perform sensitivity analysis, adaptive design of experiments and global optimization. Nearly all of the applications of GPs require the inversion of a covariance matrix that, in practice, is often ill-conditioned. Regularization methodologies are then employed with consequences on the GPs that need to be better understood.The two principal methods to deal with ill-conditioned covariance matrices are i) pseudoinverse and ii) adding a positive constant to the diagonal (the so-called nugget regularization).The first part of this paper provides an algebraic comparison of PI and nugget regularizations. Redundant points, responsible for covariance matrix singularity, are defined. It is proven that pseudoinverse regularization, contrarily to nugget regularization, averages the output values and makes the variance zero at redundant points. However, pseudoinverse and nugget regularizations become equivalent as the nugget value vanishes. A measure for data-model discrepancy is proposed which serves for choosing a regularization technique.In the second part of the paper, a distribution-wise GP is introduced that interpolates Gaussian distributions instead of data points. Distribution-wise GP can be seen as an improved regularization method for GPs.

Abstract

In this paper we propose a new approach to tilting modules for reductive algebraic groups in positive characteristic. We conjecture that translation functors give an action of the (diagrammatic) Hecke category of the affine Weyl group on the principal block. Our conjecture implies character formulas for the simple and tilting modules in terms of the p-canonical basis, as well as a description of the principal block as the anti-spherical quotient of the Hecke category. We prove our conjecture for GL_n using the theory of 2-Kac-Moody actions. Finally, we prove that the diagrammatic Hecke category of a general crystallographic Coxeter group may be described in terms of parity complexes on the flag variety of the corresponding Kac-Moody group., Comment: 145 pages. Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia. No treatments have led to clinically meaningful impacts. A major obstacle for peripherally administered therapeutics targeting the central nervous system is related to the blood–brain barrier (BBB). Ultrasounds associated with microbubbles have been shown to transiently and safely open the BBB. In AD mouse models, the sole BBB opening with no adjunct drugs may be sufficient to reduce lesions and mitigate cognitive decline. However, these therapeutic effects are for now mainly assessed in preclinical mouse models of amyloidosis and remain less documented in tau lesions. The aim of the present study was therefore to evaluate the effects of repeated BBB opening using low-intensity pulsed ultrasounds (LIPU) in tau transgenic P301S mice with two main readouts: tau-positive lesions and microglial cells. Our results show that LIPU-induced BBB opening does not decrease tau pathology and may even potentiate the accumulation of pathological tau in selected brain regions. In addition, LIPU-BBB opening in P301S mice strongly reduced microglia densities in brain parenchyma, suggesting an anti-inflammatory action. These results provide a baseline for future studies using LIPU-BBB opening, such as adjunct drug therapies, in animal models and in AD patients.

187. Memory Recall for Data Visualizations in Mixed Reality, Virtual Reality, 3D and 2D

Abstract

This article explores how the ability to recall information in data visualizations depends on the presentation technology. Participants viewed 10 Isotype visualizations on a 2D screen, in 3D, in Virtual Reality (VR) and in Mixed Reality (MR). To provide a fair comparison between the three 3D conditions, we used LIDAR to capture the details of the physical rooms, and used this information to create our textured 3D models. For all environments, we measured the number of visualizations recalled and their order (2D) or spatial location (3D, VR, MR). We also measured the number of syntactic and semantic features recalled. Results of our study show increased recall and greater richness of data understanding in the MR condition. Not only did participants recall more visualizations and ordinal/spatial positions in MR, but they also remembered more details about graph axes and data mappings, and more information about the shape of the data. We discuss how differences in the spatial and kinesthetic cues provided in these different environments could contribute to these results, and reasons why we did not observe comparable performance in the 3D and VR conditions.

Urgensi dari kegiatan ini yaitu dapat memberi solusi bagi ibu rumahtangga dan masyarakat umum dimana literasi keuangan keluarga bukan hanya tentang mengelola uang, tetapi juga tentang menciptakan fondasi yang kuat untuk kesejahteraan finansial jangka panjang. Tujuan kegiatan ini agar peserta memahami mengelola uang keluarga secara efektif, meminimalisir utang, menjaga kestabilan keuangan sehingga dapat mengatasi tantangan keuangan dan meraih tujuan keuangan mereka. Metode yang digunakan dalam PKM ini adalah sharing informasi dengan memberikan pengetahuan, termasuk melakukan diskusi. Hasil kegiatan ini pemahaman peserta meningkatkan. Abstract

This paper investigates the integration of blockchain at the design stage of garment manufacture and the positive effects its application can garner, including IP protection, opportunities in the digital realm, and better management of designs. This exploratory research uses a multi-method qualitative methodology formed from semi-structured interviews with industry professionals working on blockchain based start-up companies in the UK and focus groups with UK-based emerging fashion designers. This research demonstrates the varied opportunities for emerging designers which exist outside traditional wholesale and adherence to the fashion calendar model. It also evidences the potential for strengthened copyright protection from blockchain. The numerous benefits of this strategy are shown alongside an analysis of the potential barriers against application. Each designer was able to foresee the rewards of improved IP protection and management, but some demonstrated concern for the actual integration of blockchain into existing design and development processes. As such, this research revealed two things: firstly, a clear need for blockchain to be shown as an adaptable technology which can seamlessly integrate into pre-existing design structures; and a further need for a simple implementation strategy which can be offered to designers working in the fashion industry.

Abstract

This study proposes a cluster analysis of provinces based on national food security data. The research objective is to determine provincial clusters based on food indicators which include rice harvest area, distribution of rice stocks, percentage of trade margin and transportation of rice distribution, percentage of average per capita expenditure, and total per capita consumption of rice. The source of observation data for the Rice Harvested Area by Province variable is the Ministry of Agriculture, Central Bureau of Statistics and Agriculture Services throughout Indonesia. This study uses data mining techniques in data processing with the K-Medoids algorithm. The K-Medoids method is a clustering method that functions to break down data sets into several groups. The advantage of this method is that it can overcome the weakness of the K-Means method which is sensitive to outliers. Another advantage of this algorithm is that the results of the clustering process do not depend on the order in which the dataset is entered. The k-medoids clustering method can be applied to food security data by province. From grouping the data obtained three clusters, with silhouette coefficient values for cluster 1, cluster 2, and cluster 3 respectively 0.33; 0.32; and 0.44. With the largest silhouette coefficient value obtained in cluster 3 and the cluster has entered into a strong cluster structure. The research results can provide information to the government about food security grouping data in Indonesia which has an impact on the distribution and availability of food in Indonesia.

194. Termisk tröghet som operativ flexibilitet : Potential för kraftvärmeverk Johannes att delta på mFRR-marknaden

Att Gävles kraftvärmeverk Johannes producerar el innebär att det finns en potential för dem att delta i frekvensregleringen av nätet. Frekvensreglering är viktigt för stabiliteten i elnätet och innebär att man aktivt balanserar utbud och efterfrågan på el. Denna avsiktliga balansering görs med hjälp av balansresurser som Svenska Kraftnät (SvK) köper in på olika stödtjänstmarknader. En sådan stödtjänst är mFRR, som är en manuell frekvensåterställningsreserv som aktiveras på begäran av Svenska Kraftnät. mFRR består av en energiaktiveringsmarknad där det minsta budet är 5 MWel med en aktiveringstid på 15 minuter. I denna studie antas det att Gävle Energi har möjlighet att delta på denna marknad och att kraftvärmeverket Johannes uppfyller de villkor som krävs för det. Genom att delta på mFRR-marknaden innebär det att kraftvärmeverket Johannes kommer att upp- och nedreglera sin elproduktion efter behov. För att hantera överproduktion och underproduktion av el, och därmed värme, behövs någon form av värmelager. En möjlig lösning är att använda byggnaders termiska tröghet. Denna studie undersöker den lastflexibilitet som Gävle Energi kan uppnå genom att utnyttja värmekapaciteten hos fjärrvärmeanslutna fastighetsbestånd som värmelager. Data från tre tidigare undersökningar, där temperaturen i byggnader sänktes och innetemperaturens minskning mättes, används för att beräkna värmekapaciteten. När värmekapaciteten beräknas simulerar denna studie deltagandet av Johannes på energiaktiveringsmarknaden för mFRR år 2023. Av de tre tidigare undersökningar som genomfördes av Gävle Energi är decembertestet 2017 det mest användbara. Undersökningen genomfördes under uppvärmningssäsongen och på natten, med tillgängliga temperaturdata för hela testperioden. I decembertestet beräknas den totala värmekapaciteten till 54 MWhth/°C för 191 byggnader med egna undercentraler. 195. Money growth pegging, Taylor rule, status-seeking behavior and the 'spirit of capitalism'

Abstract

This paper analyzes the impact of “spirit of capitalism” on stationary welfare and stability properties of a one-sector Ramsey economy, where the demand of money is motivated by a cash-in-advance constraint on consumption expenditures. Preferences are defined over consumption and capital stock. There is a monetary authority that follows either a money growth pegging rule or an interest rate pegging rule. When a money growth pegging rule is introduced, a unique steady state emerges. A slight desire for status is a sufficient condition for an increase in the money growth rate to exert a local stabilizing effect and to improve stationary welfare. When an interest rate pegging rule is introduced, two steady states may emerge: a “liquidity trap” and an “interior” steady state. Both steady states are locally determinate. Moreover, we show that a slight desire for status is also a sufficient condition to ensure that the stationary welfare at “interior” steady state is higher than the one of the “liquidity trap”. It follows that an increase in the policy rate is, then, an efficient way to exit the “liquidity trap” steady state. Under similar conditions, a higher policy rate increases the stationary welfare at the “interior” steady state.

Abstract

We complete the construction of the modular generalized Springer correspondence for an arbitrary connected reductive group, with a uniform proof of the disjointness of induction series that avoids the case-by-case arguments for classical groups used in previous papers in the series. We show that the induction series containing the trivial local system on the regular nilpotent orbit is determined by the Sylow subgroups of the Weyl group. Under some assumptions, we give an algorithm for determining the induction series associated to the minimal cuspidal datum with a given central character. We also provide tables and other information on the modular generalized Springer correspondence for quasi-simple groups of exceptional type, including a complete classification of cuspidal pairs in the case of good characteristic, and a full determination of the correspondence in type $G_2$., Comment: 40 pages. Abstract

Algorithms for laying out large graphs have seen significant progress in the past decade. However, browsing large graphs remains a challenge. Rendering thousands of graphical elements at once often results in a cluttered image, and navigating these elements naively can cause disorientation. To address this challenge we propose a method called GraphMaps, mimicking the browsing experience of online geographic maps. GraphMaps creates a sequence of layers, where each layer refines the previous one. During graph browsing, GraphMaps chooses the layer corresponding to the zoom level, and renders only those entities of the layer that intersect the current viewport. The result is that, regardless of the graph size, the number of entities rendered at each view does not exceed a predefined threshold, yet all graph elements can be explored by the standard zoom and pan operations. GraphMaps preprocesses a graph in such a way that during browsing, the geometry of the entities is stable, and the viewer is responsive. Abstract

Let $\mathbf{G}$ be a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{F}$ of good characteristic, satisfying some mild conditions. In this paper we relate tilting objects in the heart of Bezrukavnikov's exotic t-structure on the derived category of equivariant coherent sheaves on the Springer resolution of $\mathbf{G}$, and Iwahori-constructible $\mathbb{F}$-parity sheaves on the affine Grassmannian of the Langlands dual group. As applications we deduce in particular the missing piece for the proof of the Mirkovic-Vilonen conjecture in full generality (i.e. for good characteristic), a modular version of an equivalence of categories due to Arkhipov-Bezrukavnikov-Ginzburg, and an extension of this equivalence., Comment: v1: 66 pages; v2: 67 pages, minor corrections; v3: 65 pages, final version, to appear in JEMS
