Lena Horne was the first African-American woman to be signed to a contract to a major Hollywood studio, who did however not know what to do with her. Her >colour< – in her voice as well as her looks – meant that she did not fit into the racial hierarchies of the day and she was largely confined oppressively to the margins. However, she was also able to some degree, and in collaboration with other African-American figures in Hollywood, to use this to give a glimpse of African-American modernism in Hollywood cinema. This is thus a case study of cultural production as struggle.

The Department of Defense (DoD) continues to develop and acquire joint systems and to deliver needed capabilities to the warfighters. With a constant objective to improve and mature the acquisition process, it continues to pursue new and creative methodologies to purchase these technically complex systems. A sound systems engineering (SE) process, focused explicitly on delivering and sustaining robust, high-quality, affordable products that meet the needs of customers and stakeholders must continue to evolve and mature. SE is the technical and technical management process that results in delivered products and systems that exhibit the best balance of cost and performance. The process must operate effectively with desired missionlevel capabilities, establish system-level requirements, allocate these down to the lowest level of the design, and ensure validation and verification of performance, meeting cost and schedule constraints. The SE process changes as the program progresses from one phase to the next, as do the tools and procedures. The process also changes over the decades, maturing, expanding, growing, and evolving from the base established during the conduct of past programs. SE has a long history. Examples (e.g. case studies) can be found demonstrating a systemic application of effective engineering and engineering management, as well as poorly applied, but well-defined processes. Throughout the many decades during which SE has emerged as a discipline, many practices, processes, heuristics, and tools have been developed, documented, and applied.

We present a case of primary renal epithelioid angiomyolipoma, its association with tuberous sclerosis and review the literature.We present the case of a 12 year-old male with past medical history of tuberous sclerosis, characterized by developmental delay, tonic and clonic seizures, and cutaneous abnormalities. He presented with macroscopic hematuria and abdominal pain. CT scan of the abdomen showed the presence of a left renal tumor. He underwent left radical nephrectomy. Pathologic study of the specimen showed primary renal epithelioid angiomyolipoma, corroborated by immunohistochemistry staining. Review of the literature was performed for this rare variant and its malignant potential.The presence of this epithelial variant is rare and must be taken into account because of its malignant potential and, thus, with different prognosis and follow up, compared to classical angiomyolipoma.Renal angiomyolipoma is an uncommon benign tumor, representing a challenge for clinical and pathological diagnosis. Despite the big size they can reach, as well as bilaterality, multiplicity of lesions and/or lymphatic regional involvement, its malignant potential has not been established. Nevertheless, the epithelioid variant has been described recently, a rare entity with aggressive behavior, difficult histological characterization and poor prognosis.

Since the METOP-A launch on 19-Oct-2006 and six months of commissioning operations, the satellite has undergone just over one year of continuous routine operations: as a result of in-flight experience, operations have evolved with the focus on minimizing mission outages and maximizing instrument life. This paper discusses these evolutions and presents several representative examples of problems that have been encountered on the METOP-A instruments and the solutions that have been implemented. The implications for future METOP missions are also considered.

The design and analysis of a Pulsed Detonation Engine, PDE, nozzle creates new and unique technical challenges. These challenges involve both the thermodynamic and the fluid dynamic functions that the PDE nozzle serves. Thermodynamically, the nozzle controls the detonation chamber pressure and converts the hot chamber flow into thrust. Fluid dynamically, the PDE nozzle controls the engine's operating frequency. The contraction ratio of the PDE nozzle is designed to maintain pre-detonation chamber pressure and to control engine operating frequency. In practice, the functions of chamber pressure control and frequency control are synergistic. The expansion ratio of the PDE nozzle is a compromise, which covers the broad nozzle pressure ratio ranges imposed by the dynamic operation of the PDE, as well as the typical Mach number influence. This paper explains these functions and suggests analysis techniques.

This chapter deals with a narrow-but crucial-aspect of the film A Star is Born, namely, the notion and construction of ‘authenticity’. The processes of authentication discussed are the guarantee of both star ‘quality’ in general and of the particular image of the star concerned.

In recent years, several papers have been published comparing the detonative engine thermodynamic cycle with the classical Brayton cycle. While these papers appear to be converging on an industry-accepted thermodynamic model for the Pulsed Detonation Engine, PDE, total convergence has not yet occurred. This paper attempts to assist in the convergence by applying analysis to representative trajectories, fuel-to-air ratios, and component efficiencies. It is found that global conservation of energy for the post-detonative state provides a representative condition from which to compute nozzle expansion losses.
