Many of the forest soils in the Intermountain West are deficient in several nutrients, including nitrogen (N), potassium (K), sulfur (S) and boron (B) and these deficiencies may impact tree resistance to insect attack. Two potential techniques for manipulating tree resistance are fertilization and thinning. We examined fertilization (both alone and in conjunction with stand thinning). Conifer resistance to bark beetles involves a three-step response, the first stage of which is resin flow. Rapid resin flow can prevent the colonization of bark beetles within a tree. Fertilization with low levels of N resulted in an increase in resin flow while high levels of N did not significantly increase resin flow in treated trees. Thinning did not result in higher concentrations of foliar K or B but did result in higher concentrations of foliar N and S. The highest concentrations of foliar N and S consistently occurred in the trees from thinned treatments, regardless of fertilization. There was a negative correlation between tree growth and resin flow one year following treatments. Increasing available nutrient levels to trees (either through fertilization or stand density management) may result in modified resistance parameters that must be considered when making management decisions.

In this paper, recent shell model is advanced towards the calibration and validation of the Vacuum-assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM) process in a novel way. The model solves the nonlinear and strongly coupled resin flow and preform deformation when the 3-D flow and stress problem is simplified to a corresponding 2-D problem. In this way, the computational efficiency is enhanced dramatically, which allows for simulations of the VARTM process of large scale thin-walled structures. The main novelty is that the assumptions of the neglected through-thickness flow and the restricted preform deformation along the normal of preform surface suffice well for the thin-walled VARTM process. The model shows excellent agreement with the VARTM process experiment. With good accuracy and high computational efficiency, the shell model provides an insight into the simulation-based optimization of the VARTM process. It can be applied to either determine locations of the gate and vents or optimize process parameters to reduce the deformation.

The damage resistance of a fibre reinforced composite materials subjected to a concentrated indentation force has been investigated. Composite samples were manufactured by vacuum infusion process and then tested according to the concentrated quasi-static indentation test standard (QSI). The composite coupons were sensorized with embedded Bragg grating fibres in various positions, to monitor the indentation-induced deformations during the loading event. Numerical simulations, performed by using a commercial FEM software, were carried out and predictions results compared with experimental data. Final results showed that Bragg wavelength changes sensitively depending on the applied quasi-static forces and it identifies correctly the non-linear pattern of the force–displacement curve. It was determined that strain transfer to the Bragg fibre is strongly influenced by the embedding conditions and final location of the optoelectronic sensors in term of shifting and in-plane rotation. Comparison between simulated and experimental data showed some discrepancy mainly due to the displacement of the embedded fibre sensors from their original location, caused by the manufacturing. However, by an inverse procedure based on iso-strain curves both shifting and rotation of the FBG sensors respect to their original position could be evaluated. This work confirms that although Bragg fibres are effective and reliable to monitor deformations of composite elements during an impact event but unwanted and unpredictable effects, due to manufacturing, should be carefully taking into account to analyse correctly the sensor signal and quantitatively evaluate the inter-laminar strains.

Vacuum assisted resin infusion process (VARI) is a high performance and cost effective manufacturing technology usually applied to produce large structures made of composite materials. In the industrial practice, trial and error approach is usually applied for the definition of injection locations and strategies during VARI processing thus generating a high risk of failure during the early stages of production of a new component. The present article deals with the development and validation of the FE analysis by means of the PAM-RTM code of a ship runway through the definition of a standardized experiment for the characterization of the laminates to obtain reliable permeability data. Indeed the assessment of laminate permeability proprieties (K) during the process is the major concern for reliable FE application: a procedure to obtain these characteristic values with few experimental tests is presented starting initially with a classic characterization at constant fibre volume fraction (Vf) and then extending the approach for the construction of a Pressure–Vf dependant curves. The tests were realized with carbon fibres fabrics, epoxy for infusion resin and PVC perforated core. Moreover the article provides an innovative approach for the computation of sandwich structures when perforated cores are used: the obtained data are finally applied with success for the validation of the simulation of the production phases of the ship runway characterized by the sandwich structure.

International audience; Liquid composite molding (LCM) includes all composite-manufacturing methods, where the liquid state resin is forced into the dry preformed reinforcement. In this study, numerical simulation of the resin infusion is presented based on a coupled approach involving Boundary Element Method (BEM) and Level Set Method. The method developed can handle stationary and transient flows by solving the Stokes equations. The numerical results on a square packed set of fibers show excellent agreement with the analytical model. The comparison between experimental and simulation results of flow front patterns revealed a fair accordance.

A methodology is presented to determine the saturation curve of a resin/glass fabric system, during infiltration in a transparent mould under constant flow rate. Video acquisitions are transformed by image analysis into saturation level versus position and time, and coupled to inlet pressure measurements. A numerical multiphase flow model is then used to simulate the infiltration for various combinations of drainage curve parameters. The numerical parameters to describe the saturation and relative permeability are determined by response surface optimization. The drainage curve and relative permeability equations determined at one time are shown to adequately describe the entire injection process, and to be flow-rate dependent. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. In this international permeability benchmark exercise, in-plane permeability data for two reinforcement fabrics, obtained using a total of 16 different experimental procedures, were compared. Although, for each procedure, the results appear consistent, different procedures result in a scatter of up to one order of magnitude in principal permeability values for each fabric at any given fibre volume fraction. The ratio of the principal permeability values varies by factors of up to 2. While experimental uncertainties and variability of the specimens affect the scatter in results for any single series of experiments, it is suspected that the main source of scatter in results from different procedures is related to human factors. Aiming at standardisation of measurement methods and interchangeability of results, "good practice" guidelines will be formulated in order to eliminate sources of scatter. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. International audience; Oleoresin is an important defensive made up of acidic and neutral diterpenes together with a variable fraction of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. It plays a major role in plant-herbivore defense. Fire, or prescribed burning, can be a stress factor leading to metabolic changes in pine needles. Prescribed burning is used to: i) restore fire to the ecosystem, ii) recreate natural disturbance dynamics, iii) reduce fuel loadings and fire risks. To our knowledge, no study has been performed on the effects of fire on the oleoresin defense system in pine trees, apart from the measurement of resin flow. We examined the effect on oleoresin production (resin flow) and the chemical composition (volatile and diterpene components) in Corsican pine (Pinus nigra ssp slaricio (Poir.) Maire var. corsicana (Loud.) Hyl.). This species is an ecologically and economically important pine in France. The chemical composition of samples was studied using HS-SPME GC and GC/MS for the volatile fraction and 13C NMR for diterpenes. A considerable increase in resin production, and consequently an increase predominantly in diterpenes together with volatile compounds, was observed at stations which had sustained recent prescribed burnings. Resin flow in trees in low-intensity prescribed burning after 4 years were no different than trees in unburned plots. Resin flow can be considered as a response to thermal stress. The major components of the two fractions were α-pinene (66.9-75.6 %) and levopimaric acid (19.8-23.0 %) respectively. The chemical composition of the resin remained unchanged after prescribed burning, even though resin production increased. No insect attacks were observed after low-intensity prescribed burning of P. laricio.

This article presents a model to simulate the RIFT process for complex 2 1/2D geometries in advance. Compaction and permeability experiments were carried out for two types of preform. A significant difference between dry and wet preform compaction was observed. The model takes both into account and by doing so, the general assumption, that the RIFT process can be modeled as a quasi-static process, becomes invalid. Therefore, a fully transient model is proposed, including the preform compaction flux. Experiments were carried out to validate the model. It was found that using the wet and dry preform properties leads to a good prediction of the height distributions, flow front positions and filling times.

International audience; This paper provides a methodology for the modeling of heat transfer and polymer flow during direct thermoplastic injection pultrusion process. Pultrusion was initially developed with thermosets which have low viscosity. But the impregnation becomes a critical point with thermoplastics which exhibit higher viscosity. There are very few reported works on direct thermoplastic impregnation with injection within the die. In addition, the rare studies have not adequately addressed the issue of unsaturated flow in woven fiber reinforcements. The solution proposed here, models the polymer flow through dual-scale porous media. A heat transfer model is coupled to a flow model enriched with a sink term. Specific changes of variables are made so as to model the steady state solution of unsaturation along a continuous process. The sink term, added to the continuity equation, represents the absorption rate of polymer by the bundles. Data were measured on a pultrusion line and micrographs confirmed the modeling strategy with an unsaturated flow approach. The flow modeling coupled to heat transfer of the thermoplastic pultrusion process aims at determining the saturation evolution through the die so as to manufacture pultruded profiles with the lowest residual porosity.

1. In the Horn of Africa, frankincense (an aromatic hardened wood resin) is obtained by tapping Boswellia papyrifera. World-wide, frankincense is of great economic and social importance as an important element of incense and perfumes. The production is declining as a result of poor natural regeneration of the Boswellia woodlands, possibly as a result of the low production of viable seeds. We hypothesize that this is because of the current intensive tapping regime, which might favour allocation of carbohydrates for synthesis of resin at the expense of allocation for generative growth. 2. Investigations were carried out at sites in different agro-ecological zones with annually tapped trees and with trees that had not been tapped for several years. Seed viability and germination success were determined for 200 randomly collected seeds in each site. For three stands, the sexual reproduction (number of flowers, fruits and seeds) was determined for different sized trees subjected to three experimental tapping intensities (no, normal and heavy tapping). 3. At the stand level, non-tapped trees produced three times as many healthy and filled seeds as tapped trees. In the last five years, sharp increases in the price of natural resins, accompanied by technological advances directed toward mechanization, have made resin tapping a strategic activity for rural development and forest conservation. The resin industry demands more efficient tapping methods and forest management plans as a way to increase competitiveness in a global market. Understanding the effects of environmental conditions on resin yield, especially under the current scenario of climate change, is key to improving techniques and plans in the resin industry. This study aims to evaluate the intra- and inter-annual effects of climate conditions and soil water availability on resin yield in tapped Pinus pinaster stands. The individual resin yield of 26 tapped trees growing at two locations with different stand densities and soil characteristics was measured fortnightly during the tapping season (June to October) for four years. The study was complemented with an analysis of changes in xylem anatomy over the four years, with a focus on axial resin canal traits, including 12 non-tapped trees as controls. Intra-annual variation in resin yield was strongly correlated with temperature, solar radiation, potential evapotranspiration and water deficit. Inter-annual variation in resin yield and resin canal abundance were correlated with temperature and water deficit in spring, but above a certain threshold of cumulated water deficit in summer rainfall favored resin yield. Under adverse climate scenarios where resource optimization is desirable, a reduced tapping season during the warmest months (June-September) would be advisable, assuming a very small production loss. Similarly, in years with a rainy summer and/or dry spring, a slightly longer tapping season could be suggested, as resin yield increases after these events. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

In this work experimental measurements of the permeability of fully interlaced 3D-woven carbon fibre preforms are performed using the unsaturated parallel flow method. The effect on the permeability from three different parameters is studied by altering the architecture of woven preforms and varying mould sizes in a duct flow set-up. Influences from the geometrically different surface layers of the woven preforms, from fibre volume fraction and from warp yarn crimp are studied. The measurements show negligible influence on the permeability from crimp and the fraction of weave surface layers while the fibre volume fraction has a prominent influence. However, the effect is not consistent in terms of fibre volume fraction variation alone but depends on how it is varied. QC 20160222

Liquid resin infusion (LRI) processes are promising manufacturing routes to produce large, thick, or complex structural parts. They are based on the resin flow induced, across its thickness, by a pressure applied onto a preform/resin stacking. However, both thickness and fiber volume fraction of the final piece are not well controlled since they result from complex mechanisms which drive the transient mechanical equilibrium leading to the final geometrical configuration. In order to optimize both design and manufacturing parameters, but also to monitor the LRI process, an isothermal numerical model has been developed which describes the mechanical interaction between the deformations of the porous medium and the resin flow during infusion. 1 , 2 With this numerical model, it is possible to investigate the LRI process of classical industrial part shapes. To validate the numerical model, first in 2D, and to improve the knowledge of the LRI process, this study details a comparison between numerical simulations and an experimental study of a plate infusion test carried out by LRI process under industrial conditions. From the numerical prediction, the filling time, the resin mass and the thickness of the preform can be determined. On another hand, the resin flow and the preform response can be monitored by experimental methods during the filling stage. One key issue of this research study is to highlight the changes in major process parameters during the resin infusion stage, such as the temperature of the preform and resin, and the variations of both thickness and fiber volume fraction of the preform. Moreover, this numerical/experimental approach is the best way to improve our knowledge on the resin infusion processes, and finally, to develop simulation tools for the design of advanced composite parts.

Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) is a manufacturing process in which a liquid resin is injected into a closed mold pre-loaded with a porous fibrous preform, producing complex composite parts with good surface finishing. Resin flow is a critical step in the process. In this work, the numerical study of the resin flow in RTM applications was performed employing a general Computational Fluid Dynamics software which does not have a specific RTM module, making it necessary to use the Volume of Fluid method for the filling problem solution. Examples were presented and compared with analytical, experimental and numerical results showing the validity and effectiveness of the present study, with maximum difference among these solutions of around 8%. Besides, based on the computational model for the RTM process, a new computational methodology was developed to simulate Light Resin Transfer Molding (LRTM). In this process, resin is injected into the mold through an empty injection channel (without porous medium) which runs all around the perimeter of the mold. The ability of FLUENT® package to simulate geometries which combine porous media regions with open (empty) regions was used. Two specific cases were simulated, showing the differences in time and behavior between RTM and LRTM processes.

International audience; The compaction of composite preforms and the flow of resin through the fibrous network take place simultaneously during the Resin Film Infusion process. Therefore there is a coupled loading of the porous reinforcements. A new experimental device to impose combinations of hydraulic and mechanical loadings (Hydro-Mechanical loadings) to fibrous preforms is used to evaluate the transverse permeability in a continuous manner (under Hydro-Mechanical conditions) for a flax mat, a flax non-crimped fabric, a carbon plain weave and a glass satin weave. For a 0.5 mm/min compression speed the continuous technique gives values similar to the ''classical" technique for the four composite reinforcements of very different nature. This suggests that it is possible to use the continuous technique to evaluate the transverse permeability behaviour of fibrous reinforcements (permeability vs. fibre volume) with a time reduction of about 8-10. Increasing the compression speed gives slowly decreasing continuous transverse permeability values.

A method is presented to optimise the flow pipe arrangement for the RIFT process for complex 2 1/2D geometries. To this end, a mesh distance-based model is coupled to a genetic optimisation algorithm. The mesh distance-based model is based on the assumption that the resin fills the nodes closest to the inlets first. It was verified with cases known from literature and with the results from a physically based flow model. The genetic algorithm provides a stable and effective optimisation method. A variable crossover rate increased its effectiveness. Depending on the choice of fitness function, the method can be used to optimise the different production parameters such as flow pipe position and length, fill distance and number of vents.

In this investigation, a comprehensive Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM) process simulation model was developed and verified. The model incorporates resin flow through the preform, compaction and relaxation of the preform, and viscosity and cure kinetics of the resin. The computer model can be used to analyze the resin flow details, track the thickness change of the preform, predict the total infiltration time and final fiber volume fraction of the parts, and determine whether the resin could completely infiltrate and uniformly wet out the preform. Flow of resin through the preform is modeled as flow through porous media. Darcy's law combined with the continuity equation for an incompressible Newtonian fluid forms the basis of the flow model. During the infiltration process, it is well accepted that the total pressure is shared by the resin pressure and the pressure supported by the fiber network. With the progression of the resin, the net pressure applied to the preform decreases as a result of increasing local resin pressure. This leads to the springback of the preform, and is called the springback mechanism. On the other side, the lubrication effect of the resin causes the rearrangement of the fiber network and an increase in the preform compaction. This is called the wetting compaction mechanism. The thickness change of the preform is determined by the relative magnitude of the springback and wetting deformation mechanisms. In the compaction model, the transverse equilibrium equation is used to calculate the net compaction pressure applied to the preform, and the compaction test results are fitted to give the compressive constitutive law of the preform. The Finite Element/Control Volume (FE/CV) method is adopted to find the flow front location and the fluid pressure. The code features the ability of simultaneous integration of 1-D, 2-D and 3-D element types in a single simulation, and thus enables efficient modeling of the flow in complex mold geometries. VARTM of two flat composite panels was conducted to verify the simulation model. The composite panels were fabricated using the SAERTEX multi-axial warp knit carbon fiber fabric and SI-ZG-5A epoxy resin. Panel 1 contained one stack of the carbon fabric, and Panel 2 contained four stacks of the fabric. The parameters verified included the flow front location and preform thickness change. For Panel 1, the flow front locations were accurately predicted while the predicted resin infiltration was much slower than measured for Panel 2. The disagreement is attributed to the permeability model used in the simulation, which failed to consider the interface flow in the unstitched preform containing more than one stack of the fabric under very low compaction force. The predicted transverse displacements agree well with the experimental measurement qualitatively, but not quantitatively. The reasons for the differences were discussed, and further investigations are recommended to develop a more accurate compaction model. The simulation code was also used to investigate the VARTM of a new form of sandwich structure with through-the-thickness reinforcements, which is being considered for use in primary aircraft structure. The infiltration of three foam core sandwich preforms with different stitch densities was studied. The objective of the study was to determine whether the preforms could be completely infiltrated and how the stitch density affects the infiltration process. The visualization experiments were conducted to verify the simulation. The model accurately predicted the resin infiltration patterns. The calculated filling times underpredicted experimental times by 4 to 14%. The model revealed the resin flow details and found that increasing the stitch spacing shortens the total filling time, but increases the nonuniformity of the flow front shape. Extreme nonuniformity of the flow front shape could result in the formation of the voids. Ph. D.

Vacuum-bag processing of honeycomb sandwich structures faces particular challenges compared to autoclave sandwich fabrication for aeronautics, a consequence of using, at the most, atmospheric pressure for their manufacturing. In particular, the adhesion of the skin to the honeycomb core is reduced and the skins tend to have higher values of porosity. On the other hand, autoclave processing is expensive, in particular for large structures, and a growing interest has been observed for vacuum-bag only processing of sandwich structures. During honeycomb sandwich cure, the skin represents a barrier to air flow between the honeycomb and the vacuum-bag so the air transport through the prepreg, adhesive and consumables or other additional materials may be a crucial factor to increase skin debulking, reduce void content and extract air from the honeycomb cells. The pressure inside the honeycomb is, therefore, a result of the through thickness permeability to air of the skins and vacuum pump work. The goal of this thesis is to develop methods for improving the low pressure processing of honeycomb sandwich structures by quantifying the through thickness air permeability of fibre reinforced composites during cure and analysing related processing issues and governing phenomena. An experimental method based on a falling pressure measurement was proposed to evaluate the through thickness air permeability of prepregs during cure, with two set-up variants. One concerns the measurement of the inherent air permeability and the other applies to processing conditions, implying the use of both consumables and vacuum-bag. The methods were successfully tested and fulfil the criterions used in soil science for the evaluation of the air permeability. Prepreg and adhesive permeabilities were determined separately and in skin combination. Prepreg permeability to air during cure varies between 10-19 m2 and 10-17 m2 and was found to depend on the evolution of the resin viscosity, which shifts from an initially immobile phase to a mobile one and then back to an immobile phase. The adhesive film was found to have very low initial permeability, at least two orders of magnitude lower than that of the prepreg. A range of initial skin through thickness air permeability could be achieved by perforating the prepreg plies, the adhesive layer, or a combination of both. An adhesive deposition method which results in the centre of honeycomb cells being free of adhesive was also tested. A corresponding range of achievable pressure was measured inside the honeycomb. The evolution of the through thickness permeability with the curing cycle was determined for each case. The adhesive layer was identified as the element that reduces the initial through thickness air permeability the most in skin manufacturing. This suggests that one of the ways of increasing the initial through thickness air permeability of the skin is to modify the permeability of the adhesive layer. The role of the resulting pressure inside the honeycomb on skin-core adhesion and skin quality was then evaluated. Skin permeability was found to control skin-core adhesion through the pressure drop in the honeycomb cells and potential outgassing of the adhesive layer. An optimal range of pressure inside the honeycomb was found to be between 40 kPa and 70 kPa. A process window is proposed for achieving the optimal pressure inside the honeycomb, as a function of the skin permeability and time of vacuum application. A semipreg alternating dry and resin impregnated areas along the fibre bed surface was also investigated as an alternative to prepreg in skin manufacturing. The semipreg through thickness air permeability before cure is approximately three orders of magnitude higher than that of a unidirectional prepreg impregnated with the same resin, thus allowing the reduction of air pressure in the honeycomb. A model was proposed for the air permeability change during cure, as dry areas get infiltrated. Due to resin pouring inside the honeycomb cells, this type of semipreg is viable as a skin only if combined with a material that has low permeability to resin, e.g., a prepreg. The resulting initial pressure in the honeycomb cells might then be tailored to specific needs. Finally, it was possible to produce sandwich samples combining a consolidation system, such as a prepreg, with an infiltration system, as wet lay-up or with a semipreg. The combination of a prepreg with a semipreg revealed to be a very practical and clean system, where it is possible to have the same resin in both materials. Moreover, it allows to tailor the initial honeycomb pressure as well as during cure, and to have the initial permeability assessed.
