The barrier performance of geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) to coal combustion products (CCPs) is of primary importance. One of the CCPs leachates that has a damaging effect on hydraulic conductivity is trona ash leachate (TAL). In this study, the hydraulic conductivity of sodium GCL (Na-GCL) to TAL was investigated in terms of mass per unit area (MPUA). The hydraulic conductivity of GCLs to TAL was 2.6 × 10 -6 and 7.6 × 10 -7 m/s when the MPUA was 3.0 kg/m 2 (M b3 ) and 4.0 kg/m 2 (M b4 ), respectively. Dye tests conducted on these GCLs showed that flow preferentially occurred through bundles of fibers existing in the GCLs. In contrast, increasing the MPUA to 5.0 kg/m 2 (M b5 ) led to a decrease in the hydraulic conductivity (i.e. 4.1 × 10 -11 m/s). Additional tests were performed on fiber-free GCLs to determine the role of fiber bundles. Regardless of MPUA, the fiber-free GCLs had low hydraulic conductivity (6.7 × 10 -11 m/s). Prehydrating M b3 and M b4 with deionized water (DIW) before permeation with TAL also decreased the hydraulic conductivity. The hydraulic conductivities of prehydrated M b3 and M b4 were 1.6 × 10 -10 and 4.8 × 10 -11 , respectively. Chemical analyses showed that the cation exchange reaction had a negligible influence on the hydraulic conductivity. Globally waste incineration is becoming the predominant treatment method of solid waste. The largest fraction of solid residue of this process is incineration bottom ash (IBA) requiring further treatment before applications such as in the construction industry become feasible. In this study, vitrification of IBA was conducted in a demonstration-scale high-temperature slagging gasification plant fueled with MSW and biomass charcoal as a green auxiliary fuel. High IBA co-feeding rates of up to 491 kg/h (equivalent to 107% of MSW feeding rate) were achieved during the trials. A highly leaching-resistant slag immobilizing heavy metals in the glass-like amorphous structure and recyclable iron-rich metal granules were generated in the process. The heavy metal migration into the solid by-product fractions depended on the IBA feeding rates and process conditions such as cold cap temperature, charcoal-to-ash ratio, and gasifier temperature profile. Slaked lime and activated carbon powder were used in a dry flue gas treatment and stack gas emissions were kept well below Singapore's regulatory limits. Steam from the hot flue gas was generated in a boiler to drive a steam turbine. The application of biomass charcoal instead of fossil fuels or electricity lead to a lower carbon footprint compared to alternative vitrification technologies. Background: Reducing global food waste is an international environmental, health, and sus-tainability priority. Although significant reductions have been achieved across the food chain, progress by UAE households and consumers remain inadequate. This study seeks to understand the association between consumer attitudes, knowledge, and awareness relating to food waste practice of residents living in the UAE. to help inform policy and action for addressing this national priority., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a validated semi-structured online questionnaire through stratified sampling (n =1052). The Spearman correlation coefficient was performed to determine the correlations. Two independent regression analysis were used to determine the association between food waste practice with: 1) knowledge and awareness and attitude subdomains, and 2) sociodemographic characteristics. Respondents (n=1072) largely reflect the socio-demographic characteristics and population distribution across the seven Emirates., Results: As expected, a significant and negative correlation was found between food waste practice knowledge and awareness and overall attitude. The regression models showed reduced food waste practice was associated with better knowledge, personal attitude, financial attitude (first model), older age and fewer adults in the household (second model). We found a significant and negative association of personal attitude (a commitment, intention), financial attitude (cost-saving motivation), and (existing) knowledge of Food waste (FW) with practice of food waste, indicating that better knowledge about FW, personal attitude or financial attitude was associated with reduction in undesirable food waste practice. While awareness and emotional attitude (moral concerns) were positively and significantly associated with food waste practice (undesirable behaviour)., Conclusions: Food waste poses significant challenges in the UAE, and addressing it requires a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted factors influencing consumer behavior. A Gram-stain-negative, oxidase-negative, rod-shaped, motile, facultatively anaerobic bacterial strain, designated as CY1220 T , was isolated from an anaerobic fermentation liquid of food waste treatment plant. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the strain CY1220 T belongs to the genus Thiopseudomonas, with the highest sequence similarity to Thiopseudomonas alkaliphila B4199 T (95.91%), followed by Thiopseudomonas denitrificans X2 T (95.56%). The genomic DNA G + C content of strain CY1220 T was 48.6 mol%. The average nucleotide identity values and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain CY1220 T and the type species of T. alkaliphila and T. denitrificans were in the range of 70.8-71.6% and 19.2-20.0%, respectively, below the thresholds for species delineation. The strain was able to grow utilizing acetic acid and butyric acid (AABA) as the sole carbon source in aerobic conditions. Genomic analysis predicted that the strain could synthesize vitamin B 12 and ectoine. The predominant cellular fatty acids were C 18:1 ω7c and/or C 18:1 ω6c, C 16:0 , C 16:1 ω7c and/or C 16:1 ω6c and C 12:0 . The polar lipids comprised diphosphatidylglycerol, unknown polar lipid, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, and phospholipid. Q-8 (2.1%) and Q-9 (97.9%) were detected as the respiratory quinones. Based on its phenotypic, genotypic and genomic characteristics, strain CY1220 T represents a novel species in the genus Thiopseudomonas, for which the name Thiopseudomonas acetoxidans sp. nov. is proposed. Resource recovery from wet organic wastes can support circular economies by creating financial incentives to produce renewable energy and return nutrients to agriculture. In this study, we characterize the potential for hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL)-based resource recovery systems to advance the economic and environmental sustainability of wastewater sludge, FOG (fats, oils, and grease), food waste, green waste, and animal manure management through the production of liquid biofuels (naphtha, diesel), fertilizers (struvite, ammonium sulfate), and power (heat, electricity). From the waste management perspective, median costs range from -193 $·tonne -1 (FOG) to 251 $·tonne -1 (green waste), and median carbon intensities range from 367 kg CO 2 eq·tonne -1 (wastewater sludge) to 769 kg CO 2 eq·tonne -1 (green waste). From the fuel production perspective, the minimum selling price of renewable diesel blendstocks are within the commercial diesel price range (2.37 to 5.81 $·gal -1 ) and have a lower carbon intensity than petroleum diesel (101 kg CO 2 eq·MMBTU -1 ). Finally, through uncertainty analysis and Monte Carlo filtering, we set specific targets (i.e., achieve wastewater sludge-to-biocrude yield >0.440) for the future development of hydrothermal waste management system components. Overall, our work demonstrates the potential of HTL-based resource recovery systems to reduce the costs and carbon intensity of resource-rich organic wastes.

Two novel ascomycetous yeast species of the genus Wickerhamiella are proposed based on isolates obtained in Thailand from food waste and the fruiting body of a polypore fungus, and on a combination of conventional DNA-barcode sequence analyses and whole-genome phylogenies. We focus on a particular subclade of the genus Wickerhamiella that contains species found in anthropic environments and describe Wickerhamiella limtongiae sp. nov. (DMKU-FW31-5 T =PYCC 9022 T =TBRC 15055 T ), found on food waste samples. In an adjacent clade, we describe Wickerhamiella koratensis sp. nov. (DMKU-KO16 T =PYCC 8908 T =TBRC 14869 T ), which represents the closest relative of Wickerhamiella slavikovae and was isolated from the fruiting body of Bjerkandera sp. In the subclade of W. limtongiae sp. nov., we propose that Wickerhamiella infanticola should be regarded as a synonym of Wickerhamiella sorbophila and that Wickerhamiella tropicalis should be regarded as a synonym of Wickerhamiella verensis .

Objective: The primary objective of this study was to assess the feasibility and acceptability of Weeknight Supper Savers, a family-based intervention designed to promote meal preparation and food waste reduction., Methods: The 4-week program was piloted using a single-arm, prepost design. Based on the Theory of Planned Behavior, the intervention included a chef-led online cooking class, a food waste toolkit, and 4 text messages/wk. Postintervention surveys were used to assess the feasibility and acceptability of the interventions., Results: Eighteen families (95%) attended their scheduled cooking class. All parents who completed the survey (17 mothers and 12 fathers) reported being satisfied with the overall program, the cooking class, and the toolkit. Approximately 73% of the children (n = 21) reported being satisfied with the overall program, and 77% reported being satisfied with the cooking class and the toolkit., Conclusions: The intervention was feasible and well-received by families. The objective of this paper is to gain insights into the synergistic advantage of anaerobic co-fermentation of heat-treated sludge (HS) with food waste (FW) and heat-treated food waste (HFW) for hydrogen production. The results showed that, compared with raw sludge (RS) mixed with FW (RS-FW), the co-substrate of HS mixed with either FW (HS-FW) or HFW (HS-HFW) effectively promoted hydrogen production, with HS-HFW promoted more than HS-FW. The maximum specific hydrogen production (MSHP) and the maximum hydrogen concentration (MHC) of HS-HFW were 40.53 mL H 2 /g dry weight and 57.22%, respectively, and 1.21- and 1.45-fold as high as those from HS-FW. The corresponding fermentation was ethanol type for HS-HFW and butyric acid type for HS-FW. The net energy production from RS-FW and HS-FW was both negative, but it was positive (2.57 MJ) from 40% HFW addition to HS-HFW. Anaerobic fermentation was more viable for HS-HFW., (© 2024. This study investigates the hydrogen (H 2 ) production performance and bacterial communities in mesophilic (37 °C) and thermophilic (50 °C) H 2 -producing consortia derived from different inoculum sources and utilizing food waste as a substrate. This study found notable variations in H 2 production characteristics among these consortia. Among the mesophilic consortia (MC), the W-MC obtained with wetland (W) as the inoculum source exhibited the highest hydrogen production (3900 mL·L -1 and 117 mL·L -1 ·h -1 ), while among the thermophilic consortia (TC), the FP-TC obtained with forest puddle sediment (FP) as the inoculum source showed the highest performance (2112 mL·L -1 and 127 mL·L -1 ·h -1 ). This study reveals that the choice of inoculum source plays a crucial role in determining hydrogen production efficiency. Furthermore, the bacterial community analysis demonstrated varying microbial diversity and richness in different inoculum sources. Clostridium, a well-known H 2 -producing bacterium, was found in both mesophilic and thermophilic consortia and showed a positive correlation with H 2 production. Other bacteria, such as Sporanaerobacter, Caproiciproducens, and Caldibacillus, also exhibited significant correlations with H 2 production, suggesting their potential roles in the process. The study highlights the complex interactions between bacterial communities and hydrogen production performance, shedding light on the critical factors influencing this renewable energy source. Researchers have concentrated on innovative approaches to increase the shelf life of perishable food products and monitor their quality during storage and transportation as consumer demand for safe, environmentally friendly, and effective packaging develops. This comprehensive review aims to provide an overview of recent developments in carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) chemical synthesis and its applications in active and intelligent packaging materials. It explores various methods for modifying cellulose to produce CMC and highlights the unique properties that make it suitable for addressing packaging industry challenges. The integration of CMC into active packaging systems, which helps reduce food waste and enhance food preservation, is discussed in depth. Furthermore, the integration of CMC in smart sensors and indicators for real-time monitoring and quality assurance in intelligent packaging is examined. The chemical synthesis of CMC and strategies to optimise its properties were studied, and the review concluded by examining the challenges and prospects of CMC-based packaging in the industry. Achieving rapid, efficient, and cost-effective anaerobic digestion (AD) of food waste is a key means to improve the efficiency of food waste treatment. However, in view of the shortage of historical anaerobic digestion data, the limitation of general neural networks in predicting biogas production, and its sensitivity to abnormal variation points, achieving accurate prediction of biogas production is not easy. This paper proposes a novel biogas production prediction model of food waste AD for energy optimization based on the mixup data augmentation integrating an improved global attention mechanism long short-term memory (LSTM). Taking the AD data of the actual factory as samples, the mixup data augmentation is introduced to generate virtual samples with the similar distribution as original samples. Then original samples and generated virtual samples are used as the input of the global attention mechanism LSTM to establish the food waste AD biogas production prediction model. Finally, the proposed method is applied in the biogas production prediction of actual food waste treatment plants. Compared with other industrial modeling models, the experimental results show that the proposed method has the highest prediction accuracy of 0.988, which performs well in predicting biogas production and can effectively guide and timely adjust feed configuration of AD plants., (© 2024. This study explores the viability of utilizing municipal solid waste (MSW) and legacy waste as a renewable energy source through pyrolysis, akin to solid fuels. The heating value of MSW and legacy waste were found to be 37737.89 and 40432.84 kJ/kg, respectively. Proximate analysis shows that MSW fits within Tanner diagram parameters, eliminating the need for auxiliary fuel in pyrolysis. With 47.6 % and 44.16 % lignin content in MSW and legacy waste were deemed suitable for char production. Thermal degradation resulted in mass losses of 68 % for MSW and 82 % for legacy waste. The kinetic and thermodynamic assessment indicates lower activation energy (E a ) and Gibbs free energy (ΔG) for MSW (5.72 kJ/mol and 170.37 kJ/mol, respectively) compared to fossil fuels, suggesting faster reactions without additional energy requirement. Agro-food waste is a rich source of biopolymers such as cellulose, chitin, and starch, which have been shown to possess excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low toxicity. These properties make biopolymers from agro-food waste for its application in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Thus, this review highlighted the properties, processing methods, and applications of biopolymers derived from various agro-food waste sources. We also highlight recent advances in the development of biopolymers from agro-food waste and their potential for future tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications, including drug delivery, wound healing, tissue engineering, biodegradable packaging, excipients, dental applications, diagnostic tools, and medical implants. Additionally, it explores the challenges, prospects, and future directions in this rapidly evolving field. The review showed the evolution of production techniques for transforming agro-food waste into valuable biopolymers. However, these biopolymers serving as the cornerstone in scaffold development and drug delivery systems. With their role in wound dressings, cell encapsulation, and regenerative therapies, biopolymers promote efficient wound healing, cell transplantation, and diverse regenerative treatments. Biopolymers support various regenerative treatments, including cartilage and bone regeneration, nerve repair, and organ transplantation. Hospital food waste has nutritional, economic and environmental impacts, and halving food waste is a sustainable development goal. This study aimed to quantify hospital food waste and its nutritional, environmental and financial values in medical and surgical wards. In a cross-sectional study in three educational hospitals, nutritional and demographic data of adult inpatients were collected. The food waste was measured at breakfast, lunch and snack times, and a 24-hour food recall was fulfilled for each patient. Also, the nutritional, environmental and financial values of discarded food were calculated. Food waste contributors were determined using linear regression. Totally, 398 meals were evaluated. The average served food was about 1 kg patient -1 day -1 , while 539.5 g patient -1 day -1 (50.1% of the served food) was discarded. Mean food wastes were 148.9 g (standard deviation (SD): 130.1), 364.3 g (SD: 257.2) and 80.2 g (SD: 101.5) in breakfast, lunch and snacks, equal to 45.7% (SD: 36.9), 51.4% (SD: 36.1) and 62.4% (SD: 53.2) of the served food, respectively. Rice, soup, milk and fruits were mostly discarded. Severely malnourished patients had higher daily food waste. Food preparation and waste were estimated to cost on average US$1.8 and US$0.8 patient -1 day -1 , respectively. Each kilogram of food waste resulted in 8.1 m 2 of land use, 1.4 kg of CO 2 -equivalent gas emission, and about 1003 L of water wastage. Half of the hospital food was discarded which means waste of nutrients, environmental resources and money. Biopolymers produced as microbial carbon storage systems, such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), offer potential to be used in place of petrochemically derived plastics. Low-value organic feedstocks, such as food waste, have been explored as a potential substrate for the microbial production of PHAs. In this review, we discuss the biosynthesis, composition and producers of PHAs, with a particular focus on the genetic and process engineering efforts to utilise non-native substrates, derived from food waste from across the entire supply chain, for microbial growth and PHA production. In light of the suboptimal resource efficiency persisting in current demolition waste management (DWM) practices caused by inattentive and profit-driven decision-making due to the lack of tailored stringent legislation, monetary incentives, and benchmarking frameworks, this study aims to facilitate sustainability-oriented decision-making at the demolition planning stage. A practical Building Information Modelling (BIM)-based visual DWM planning system is designed, wherein the system seamlessly accommodates inventory analysis and Multi-Criteria Decision-Aiding (MCDA) algorithms into various interconnected modules. Moreover, this research proposes bespoke algorithms and colour coding schemes to quantify and visualise the recycling value of building components for augmenting the visual guidance of sustainable building design and selective demolition planning. Furthermore, a pilot case study demonstrates the system's applicability in a real-world demolition project. The findings unveil that improving the recycling rate substantially offsets carbon emissions and demolition waste disposal expenditures. The increment in beneficial impacts outweighs the additional energy consumption and costs for implementing sustainable DWM strategies based on the predefined geographical settings. This BIM-based system reforms the conventional demolition planning and DWM decision-making workflow by tackling technical barriers concerning data richness, interoperability, and result interpretation. It equips the users with intuitive visual design guidance and parallel scenario analysis when crafting sustainability-oriented DWM schemes. In summary, this research contributes to familiarising industry practitioners with sustainable DWM schematic design and circular economy principles. In recent years, food waste has been a global concern that contributes to climate change. To deal with the rising impacts of climate change, in Hong Kong, food waste is converted into electricity in the framework of low-carbon approach. This work provides an overview of the conversion of food waste into electricity to achieve carbon neutrality. The production of methane and electricity from waste-to-energy (WTE) conversion are determined. Potential income from its sale and environmental benefits are also assessed quantitatively and qualitatively. It was found that the electricity generation from the food waste could reach 4.33 × 10 9 kWh annually, avoiding equivalent electricity charge worth USD 3.46 × 10 9 annually (based on US' 8/kWh). An equivalent CO 2 mitigation of 9.9 × 10 8  kg annually was attained. The revenue from its electricity sale in market was USD 1.44×10 9 in the 1 st year and USD 4.24 ×10 9 in the 15 th year, respectively, according to the projected CH 4 and electricity generation. The modelling study indicated that the electricity production is 0.8 kWh/kg of landfilled waste. The food waste could produce electricity as low as US' 8 per kW ∙ h. In spite of its promising results, there are techno-economic bottlenecks in commercial scale production and its application at comparable costs to conventional fossil fuels. Issues such as high GHG emissions and high production costs have been determined to be resolved later. Utilizing digestate as a fertilizer enhances soil nutrient content, improves fertility, and minimizes nutrient runoff, mitigating water pollution risks. This alternative approach replaces commercial fertilizers, thereby reducing their environmental impact and lowering greenhouse gas emissions associated with fertilizer production and landfilling. Herein, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of various soil amendments, including carbon fractions from waste materials (biochar, compost, and cocopeat), and food waste anaerobic digestate application methods on tomato plant growth (Solanum lycopersicum) and soil fertility. The results suggested that incorporating soil amendments (biochar, compost, and cocopeat) into the potting mix alongside digestate application significantly enhances crop yields, with increases ranging from 12.8 to 17.3% compared to treatments without digestate. Moreover, the combination of soil-biochar amendment and digestate application suggested notable improvements in nitrogen levels by 20.3% and phosphorus levels by 14%, surpassing the performance of the those without digestate. Microbial analysis revealed that the soil-biochar amendment significantly enhanced biological nitrification processes, leading to higher nitrogen levels compared to soil-compost and soil-cocopeat amendments, suggesting potential nitrogen availability enhancement within the rhizosphere's ecological system. Chlorophyll content analysis suggested a significant 6.91% increase with biochar and digestate inclusion in the soil, compared to the treatments without digestate. Preserving rumen fluid as the inoculum for anaerobic digestion of food waste is necessary when access to animal donors or slaughterhouses is limited. This study aims to compare two preservation methods relative to fresh ruminal inoculum: (1) cryoprotected with 5% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and stored at -20 °C and (2) frozen at -20 °C, both for 6 months. The fermentation activity of different inoculum was evaluated by rumen-based in vitro anaerobic fermentation tests (volatile fatty acids, biomass digestibility, and gas production). Citrus pomace was used as the substrate during a 96-h fermentation. The maximum volatile fatty acids, methane production, and citrus pomace digestibility from fresh rumen fluid were not significantly different from rumen fluid preserved with DMSO. Metagenome analysis revealed a significant difference in the rumen microbial composition and functions between fresh rumen fluid and frozen inoculum without DMSO. Storage of rumen fluid using -20 °C with DMSO demonstrated the less difference compared with fresh rumen fluid in microbial alpha diversity and taxa composition. The hierarchical clustering tree of CAZymes showed that DMSO cryoprotected fluid was clustered much closer to the fresh rumen fluid, showing more similarity in CAZyme profiles than frozen rumen fluid. The abundance of functional genes associated with carbohydrate metabolism and methane metabolism did not differ between fresh rumen fluid and the DMSO-20 °C, whereas the abundance of key functional genes significantly decreased in frozen rumen fluid. These findings suggest that using rumen liquid preserved using DMSO at -20 °C for 180 days is a feasible alternative to fresh rumen fluid. Anaerobic digestion of food waste leachate (FWL) provides a viable solution for waste treatment and energy production. Returning solids from digested sludge to the reactor maintains a high microbial concentration and enhances digestion efficiency. However, this requires coagulants because the digestate has low dewaterability. This study analyzed methane production and microbial communities using biochemical methane potential tests for inorganic coagulants (AlCl 3 , Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 , FeCl 3 , and Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ) in FWL treatment. Cumulative methane production was the highest in the control and decreased in the order of Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 , AlCl 3 , FeCl 3 , and Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 . Iron ions inhibited H 2 S production while aluminum ions increased it compared to the control group. Despite the absence of significant changes in microbial communities following coagulant injection, a substantial increase in damaged cells was observed. Food waste has emerged as a critical global concern, with households identified as major contributors to this pressing issue. As the world grapples with sustainability challenges, addressing food waste in the context of rural labor migration is crucial for achieving broader sustainable development goals. However, there is still limited research regarding the relationship between labor migration and food waste. We utilized propensity score matching to analyze cross-sectional data collected from 1270 rural households in China. Labor migration led to significant increases of 37% in overall food waste and 35% in plant-based food waste, respectively. Furthermore, households with labor migration exhibited 29%, 31%, and 30 % higher energy, protein, and carbohydrate waste, respectively, compared to non-migration households. Regarding micronutrients, migration led to a 39% increase in iron waste, a 42% increase in zinc waste, and a 47% increase in selenium waste. The results of the categorical analysis indicate variations in the impact of labor migration on food wastage within rural households. Food wastage in rural households with chronic illness patients responds differently to labor migration. Moreover, labor migration predominantly affects households without courier services in villages, where dietary diversity plays a significant role. Understanding these variations is essential for crafting targeted interventions and policies to address food waste in different rural contexts. E-waste, encompassing discarded materials from outdated electronic equipment, often ends up intermixed with municipal solid waste, leading to improper disposal through burial and incineration. This improper handling releases hazardous substances into water, soil, and air, posing significant risks to ecosystems and human health, ultimately entering the food chain and water supply. Formal e-waste recycling, guided by circular economy models and zero-discharge principles, offers potential solutions to this critical challenge. However, implementing a circular economy for e-waste management due to chemical and energy consumption may cause environmental impacts. Consequently, advanced sustainability assessment tools, such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), have been applied to investigate e-waste management strategies. While LCA is a standardized methodology, researchers have employed various routes for environmental assessment of different e-waste management methods. However, to the authors' knowledge, there lacks a comprehensive study focusing on LCA studies to discern the opportunities and limitations of this method in formal e-waste management strategies. Hence, this review aims to survey the existing literature on the LCA of e-waste management under a circular economy, shedding light on the current state of research, identifying research gaps, and proposing future research directions. It first explains various methods of managing e-waste in the circular economy. This review then evaluates and scrutinizes the LCA approach in implementing the circular bioeconomy for e-waste management. Finally, it proposes frameworks and procedures to enhance the applicability of the LCA method to future e-waste management research. The literature on the LCA of e-waste management reveals a wide variation in implementing LCA in formal e-waste management, resulting in diverse results and findings in this field. This paper underscores that LCA can pinpoint the environmental hotspots for various pathways of formal e-waste recycling, particularly focusing on metals. It can help address these concerns and achieve greater sustainability in e-waste recycling, especially in pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical pathways. The recovery of high-value metals is more environmentally justified compared to other metals. However, biometallurgical pathways remain limited in terms of environmental studies. Despite the potential for recycling e-waste into plastic or glass, there is a dearth of robust background in LCA studies within this sector. This review concludes that LCA can offer valuable insights for decision-making and policy processes on e-waste management, promoting environmentally sound e-waste recycling practices. Landfills often become a source of environmental impact due to the percolation of the leachate (liquid resulting from the decomposition of buried waste), which can eventually disperse and contaminate the soil and water bodies. This study aimed to evaluate quantitatively and spatially the leachate plume from the former Belo Horizonte landfill in the Coqueiros and Taiobas watersheds by using tritium ( 3 H) concentration in nineteen (19) sampling points: 14 groundwater, 4 surface water and 1 leachate. Among the methodologies applied to determine the 3 H content in the leachate, pre-filtration proved to be the most effective due to the ease treating of the sample, as well as the identical results obtained compared to the traditional method. The 3 H contents resulted in concentrations up to thirty times higher in the leachate (=96,19 to 111,87 TU) and ten times in groundwater (PM23/3 = 45,06 TU), compared to the calculated threshold (TS) of rainfall tritium (TS_ 3 Hrain = 3,41 TU). Temporal series results indicate no trend and no influence of seasonality regarding the entry of pluvial tritium, leachate liquid level and wells water level. The 3 H contour maps shows a transport of the mixture (water and leachate) towards the Coqueiros stream, with a higher concentration of leachate in wells closer to the landfill slope (PM13, PM14, PM15, and PM23) and in the southwest margin of the Coqueiros stream (PM17). In the furthest portion of the landfill, 3 H levels are higher than the base threshold only at the deepest level of PM20 (=3,90 TU), possibly due to factors such as: i) denser character of the leachate compared to groundwater; ii) greater influence of recharge for regions further away from the landfill slope; and iii) the presence of the rock about 50 m from the surface. Based on the hydrogeological conceptual model, the transport of the leachate water mixture in the groundwater water compartment of the Coqueiros watershed basin seems to follow a piston or dispersion flow, with a small Peclet number (P d  = 0,05, as an example), as indicated by the high correlation coefficient values (R 2  ≈ 0,85 to 0,99) from graphic interpolation. The mixture of water and leachate results in a transient time (t t ) ≈ 30 years and linear velocity (V l ) ≈ 3-14 m/year in the interpolated sections. These indicate a coherent correlation with the mean hydraulic conductivity (K ≈ 29,34 m/year), as they result in effective porosity values between (Ne) ≈ 0.16 to 0.36, which corresponds to Ne range for unconsolidated sediments, similar to the wells lithotype profiles. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a promising waste management strategy that reduces landfilling while generating biogas. Anaerobic co-digestion involves mixing two or more substrates to enhance the nutrient balance required for microorganism growth and thus improve the degradation. Monitoring AD is crucial for comprehending the biological process, optimizing process stability, and achieving efficient biogas production. In this work, we have used three dimensional excitation emission fluorescence spectroscopy and mass spectrometry metabolomics, two complementary techniques, to monitor the anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) of cellulose, ash wood or oak wood with food waste. The two approaches were compared together and to the biogas production records. Results of this experiment demonstrated the complementarity of both analytical techniques with the measurement of the biogas production since 3D fluorescence spectroscopy and MS metabolomics revealed the earlier molecular changes occurring in the bioreactors, mainly associated with the hydrolysis step, whereas the biogas production data reflected the biological activity in the last step of the digestion. Moreover, in all cases, the three data sets effectively delineated the differences among the substrates. While the two wood substrates were poorly degradable as they were richer in aromatic compounds, cellulose was highly degradable and was characterized by the production of several glycolipids. Then, the three tested AcoDs resulted in a similar 3D EEM fluorescence and metabolomics profiles, close to the one observed for the AD of food waste alone, indicating that the incorporation of the food waste drove the molecular degradation events in the AcoDs. Substrate-specific differences were appreciated from the biogas production data. The research examined the capabilities of Yarrowia lipolytica (YL) and Pichia farinosa (PF) in converting sugars to ethanol and oleochemicals. Lipid, ethanol, protein yield and gene-expressions were analysed at different substrate concentrations (3 to 30 g/L) with glucose, food waste, and fermentation-effluent. Optimal results were obtained at 20 g/L using both synthetic carbon with 4.6 % of total lipid yield. Lauric and Caprylic acid dominance was noted in total lipid fractions. Protein accumulation (6 g/L) was observed in glucose system (20 g/L) indicating yeast strains potential as single-cell proteins (SCP). Fatty-acid desaturase (FAD12) and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) expressions were higher at optimum condition of YL (1.15 × 10 -1 , 3.8 × 10 -2 ) and PF (5.8 × 10 -2 , 3.8 × 10 -2 ) respectively. Maximum carbon reduction of 87 % depicted at best condition, aligning with metabolic yield. The study assessed a co-processing system segregating food waste (FW) with different impurities into liquid (slurry) and solid fractions and treated using anaerobic digestion (AD) and pyrolysis (Py), respectively, which is defined as ADCo-Py. Biomethane potential tests showed higher methane yield from the FW slurry fraction (572.88 mL/gVS FW ) compared to the whole FW (294.37 mL/gVS FW ). Pyrolyzing the FW solid fraction reduced nitrogen compounds in bio-oil by 62 % compared to the whole FW. The energy balance and economic feasibility of ADCo-Py were compared with stand-alone AD, Py, and AD integrated with incineration (ADCo-INC). While all systems required extra energy, stand-alone Py and ADCo-INC needed 3.8 and 2.8 times more energy than ADCo-Py, respectively. Techno-economic analysis favored ADCo-Py, with a net present value (NPV) of $15 million and an internal rate of return (IRR) of 34 %. This meta-analysis presents an evaluation of substrate sources and their impact on the growth performance of black soldier fly (BSF) larva. The database, compiled from Google Scholar, PubMed, and Science Direct, focuses on data concerning substrate sources, environmental conditions, and the performance parameters of BSF. Seven types of substrates were analyzed, including Feed Waste, Manure, Fruits, Mix, Animal Source, Fermentation Residue, and Food Waste. The Feed Waste group demonstrated the highest DM content, while the highest CP content was found in the Animal Source group. Higher CP and DM content were found in larva meal from Fermentation Residues and Feed Waste diets, respectively. Higher survival rates were observed in BSF larvae fed on Feed Waste, Fermentation Residues, Food Waste, Fruits, Mix, and Manure substrates compared to Vegetable and Animal Source substrates. Fresh larval weight was lower when Manure was used as a feed substrate than in the Animal Source, Feed Waste, and Vegetable substrates. The prepupal Wet Weight was highest in BSF larvae fed on Animal Source, surpassing those fed on Fermentation Residue, Manure, and Vegetable substrates. Substrate CP content exhibited a positive relationship with fresh larva weight, prepupal wet weight, dry larval weight; larval length, mortality until prepupal, protein conversion, feed conversion ratio, food consumption, substrate reduction rate bioconversion ratio, waste reduction index, and efficiency conversion of digested feed in BSF larva. In the process of marketization, the lack of redundancy evaluation of the MSW incineration treatment capacity leads to the regional imbalance of treatment capacity and waste of resources. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a spatial-temporal redundancy evaluation method for the MSW incineration treatment capacity based on the accurate MSW generation prediction using artificial intelligence. To achieve this aim, this study first proposed and finalized a prediction model of the provincial MSW generation by applying the artificial neuron network (ANN) technology and using the statistical data of Jiangsu Province of China from 1990 to 2020. In the finalized model, the input variables consist of three demographic variables, three social variables, and five economic variables; the model structure that includes four hidden layers and 16 neurons in each hidden layer performed best with a coefficient of determination (R 2 ) of 0.995 on the training samples and an R 2 of 0.974 on the test set, respectively. Using the finalized model and statistical data of all provinces in China, this study proposed a redundancy evaluation method for the MSW incineration treatment capacity and evaluated the spatial and temporal redundancy status of China. The results first confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method to model and quantify the redundancy problem. Second, according to the evaluation results, even if no new treatment plant will be built before 2025, 10 of China's 31 provinces still have redundancy problems, indicating the severity of this problem. This study first contributes to the body of knowledge by modeling the redundancy problem of the MSW incineration treatment capacity. Moreover, this study provides a tool to quantify temporal and spatial redundancy using advanced technology and publicly available data. Background: The black soldier fly (BSF) offers a potential solution to address shortages of feed and food sources; however, selecting effective rearing substrates remains a major hurdle in BSF farming. In an urban area like Singapore, current practice is based on rearing BSF on homogeneous waste streams (e.g., spent brewery grains or okara) because heterogeneous food wastes (e.g., mixed kitchen/canteen waste or surplus cooked food) present several operational challenges with respect to the standardization of development, nutritional content, and harvesting., Results: In this study, we compared two genetic strains of BSF larvae (wild-type and laboratory-adapted line) in a bioconversion experiment with diverse types of food waste (homogeneous/heterogeneous; plant/meat) and we quantified the phenotypic plasticity. Our results demonstrate different plasticity in bioconversion performance, larval growth and larval nutrition between the two BSF lines. This difference may be attributed to the selective breeding the laboratory-adapted line has experienced. Notably, larval lipid content displayed little to no genetic variation for plasticity compared with larval protein and carbohydrate content. Despite variation in larval development, heterogeneous food wastes can produce better performance in bioconversion, larval growth, and larval nutrient content than homogeneous food waste. All-meat diets result in high larvae mortality but larval survival could be rescued by mixing meat with plant-based food wastes., Conclusion: Overall, we suggest using mixed meals for BSF larvae feeding. Bio-cellulose derived materials (BCM) exhibit distinct structural and morphologic properties, which make them suitable for catalytic environmental remediation. In the domain of water treatment, the prospects for BCM remain bright, offering new possibilities for the development of advanced materials with low environmental impact. Research on BCM as catalysts or catalyst immobilization platforms for water treatment is still limited, mostly using laboratory-grown biomaterials for the photocatalytic degradation of dyes. BCM production costs can be significant, which can hinder its application. Thus, cost-effective alternatives using waste materials as substrates for BCM culture media are highly desirable to optimize production, while also decreasing food waste. Moreover, advances in biotechnology can enhance BCM production, tailoring its properties to meet specific requirements. Hybrid catalytic BCM composites can be easily developed, due to the straightforward functionalization of the biomaterial's network, promoting the efficiency of a variety of catalytic systems. Still considering the intrinsic features of the biomaterial, membrane development and application pose as an opportunity for continuous flow evaluations, facilitating long-term usage and reusability. Anaerobic co-digestion of fat-oil-grease (FOG) and food waste (FW) with sewage sludge (SS) in wastewater treatment plants is a method used to increase biogas production. In this study, digestion scenarios were compared using plant-wide modeling and life cycle assessment: Scenario-0 (mono-digestion of waste-activated sludge (WAS)), Scenario-1 (co-digestion of WAS with FOG), and Scenario-2 (co-digestion of WAS with FW). Scenario-0, with the highest energy use and landfilling of FOG/FW, has the worst environmental impact. Scenario-1 and Scenario-2 minimize the environmental load by energy recovery and avoiding landfilling of organic waste. Scenario-wise, the change in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from treatment was negligible. However, due to the impact of landfilling, GHG emissions in Scenario-0 were 21% and 30% higher than in Scenario-1 and 2, respectively. In this study, two arrested anaerobic digestion bioreactors, fed with food waste, operated under different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) exhibited similar total volatile fatty acid (VFA) yields (p = 0.09). 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed distinct microbial structure (p = 0.02) at the two HRTs. However, between the two HRTs, there were no differences in potential (DNA) and extant (mRNA) functionality for the production of acetic (AA)-, propionic (PA)-, butyric (BA)- and valeric-acid (VA), as indicated by the metagenome and metatranscriptome data, respectively. The highest potential and extant functionality for PA production in the reactor microbiomes mirrored the highest abundance of PA in the reactor effluents. Meta-omics analysis of BA production indicated possible metabolite exchange across different community members. Food waste was collected from the campus canteen and lipid-rich particles (LRP) phase was evaluated to harvest Tetradesmus obliquus. Box-Behnken design showed the highest harvest efficiency (HE) of 84.69 % in run#1 (LRP = 30 %; initial OD 680  = 1.75; and harvest time = 6 h). Numerical optimization ramps suggested 24.15 % (v/v) LRP ratio, initial OD 680 3.00, and harvest time 3.82 h for maximum HE. Two flocs were observed, a precipitate at the bottom (B-Floc) and a floating biomat (F-Floc). Experimental results showed HE of 88.3 %, with 67 % and 33 % of the harvested biomass forming F-Floc and B-Floc, respectively. Pre-heating of LRP in a boiling water bath for 10 min (HFB-T10) promoted F-Floc proportion up to 91.6 %. In addition, HFB-T10 showed the highest FAMEs yield of 11.17 g/L of the total used volume, which was significantly higher than that of the centrifuged cells and heat-untreated biomat. Salts including NaCl are the most common food flavoring agents so they are often accumulated in food waste (FW) and have potential impact on anaerobic digestion (AD) of FW. In this study, the enhanced biogas production from two-stage anaerobic digestion (TSAD) of FW by microscale zero-valent iron (ZVI) under different salinity (3, 6, 9, and 15 g NaCl/L) was evaluated. Under salinity stress, ZVI becomes a continue-release electron donor due to the enhanced corrosion and dissolution effect and the slow-down surface passivation, further improving the performance of TSAD. Experimental results revealed that the biogas production including H 2 and CH 4 from TSAD with 10 g/L ZVI addition was promoted under salinity stress. The maximum H 2 and CH 4 yield (303.38 mL H 2 /g-VS and 253.84 mL CH 4 /g-VS) were observed at the salinity 9 g NaCl/L. Compared with that of zero salinity, they increased by 40.94% and 318.46%, respectively. Additionally, Sedimentibacter, an exoelectrogen that can participate in the direct interspecies electron transfer, also exhibited the highest relative abundance (34.96%) at the salinity 9 g NaCl/L. Urban green waste and food waste are often used as bulking agents to prepare home compost in combination with animal manure in urban horticulture and community gardening. Although it is known that antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) persist in home compost, their origins have not been determined. In addition, the factors contributing to ARGs persistence remain unclear. In this study, we aim to (i) characterize the changes in the microbiome and antimicrobial resistome during the composting process of home compost using metagenomics shotgun sequencing, (ii) identify the source of the ARGs persisted in home compost using SourceTracker, and (iii) elucidate the collective effect of compost microbiome and environmental factors, including the physicochemical properties and antibiotics concentration of home compost, in contributing to ARG persistence using Procrustes analysis, co-occurrence network analysis, variation partitioning analysis, and structural equation modeling. SourceTracker analysis indicated that urban green waste bulking agent was the major source of the persisting ARGs in home compost instead of animal manure. Procrustes analysis and co-occurrence network analysis revealed a strong association between microbiome and antimicrobial resistome. Variation partitioning analysis and structural equation modeling suggested that physicochemical properties shaped the antimicrobial resistome directly and indirectly by influencing the microbiome. Food waste management remains a paramount issue in the field of social innovation. While government-led public recycling measures are important, the untapped role of residents in food waste management at the household level also demands attention. This study aims to propose the design of a smart system that leverages sensors, mobile terminals, and cloud data services to facilitate food waste reduction. Unlike conventional solutions that rely on mechanical and biological technologies, the proposed system adopts a user-centric approach. By integrating the analytical hierarchy process and the theory of inventive problem solving, this study delves into users' actual needs and explores intelligent solutions that are alternatives to traditional approaches to address conflicts in the problem solving phase. The study identifies five main criteria for user demands and highlights user-preferred subcriteria. It determines two physical conflicts and two technical conflicts and explores corresponding information and communications technology (ICT)-related solutions. The tangible outcomes encompass a semi-automated recycling product, a mobile application, and a data centre, which are all designed to help residents navigate the challenges regarding food waste resource utilisation. This study provides an approach that considers users' genuine demands, empowering them to actively engage in and become practitioners of household food waste reduction. The findings serve as valuable references for similar smart home management systems, providing insights to guide future developments.

An anaerobic dynamic membrane bioreactor (AnDMBR) mimicking rumen conditions was developed to enhance the hydrolysis of lignocellulosic materials and the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) when treating food waste. The AnDMBR was inoculated with cow rumen content and operated at a 0.5 day hydraulic retention time, 2-4 day solids retention time, a temperature of 39 °C, and a pH of 6.3, characteristics similar to those of a rumen. Removal rates of neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber of 58.9 ± 8.4 and 69.0 ± 8.6%, respectively, and a VFA yield of 0.55 ± 0.12 g VFA as chemical oxygen demand g volatile solids (VS) fed -1 were observed at an organic loading rate of 18 ± 2 kg VS m -3 day -1 . The composition and activity of the microbial community remained consistent after biofilm disruption, bioreactor upset, and reinoculation. Up to 66.7 ± 5.7% of the active microbial populations and 51.0 ± 7.0% of the total microbial populations present in the rumen-mimicking AnDMBR originated from the inoculum. This study offers a strategy to leverage the features of a rumen; the AnDMBR achieved high hydrolysis and fermentation rates even when treating substrates different from those fed to ruminants.

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to compare workplace conditions and metal exposures in 431 waste pickers who worked nearby at the Estrutural Dump in Brasilia utilizing hair ( n  = 310) and nail ( n  = 355) as matrices of exposure. Waste pickers were grouped according to their workplace (open waste dump: G1 and sorting plants: G2). Hair and nail samples were collected and analyzed using ICP-MS. The work duration in the facilities was significantly different between the groups with averages of 16.46 (8.48) yrs and 9.26 (6.28) yrs for hair donors in G1 and G2, and 15.92 (7.72) yrs and 8.55 (5.77) yrs for toenail donors in G1 and G2, respectively. The arithmetic means (μg/g) of cadmium, copper, lead, and manganese in hair were significantly higher in G2 (0.076 ± 0.133; 19.61 ± 18.16; 2.27 ± .56 and 3.87 ± 5.59, respectively) compared to G1 (0.069 ± 0.235; 15.72 ± 15.18; 1.72 ± 4.04 and 3.65 ± 5.5, respectively). Concentrations of arsenic, barium, cadmium, copper, cobalt, lead, manganese, and molybdenum in nail were significantly higher in G2 (0.57 ± 0.39; 22.74 ± 42.06; 0.1 ± 0.08; 22.7 ± 51.60; 0.48 ± 0.45; 4.69 ± 9.43; 19.07 ± 20.75; 1.80 ± 1.76, respectively) compared to G1 (0.40 ± 0.28; 15.32 ± 22.31; 0.08 ± 0.11; 11.91 ± 16.25; 0.37 ± 0.37; 3.94 ± 15.04; 13.01 ± 19.08; 1.16 ± 1.80, respective. Our findings suggest that the studied population was exposed to toxic metals and indicates the need for chemical exposure prevention policies to monitor chemical risk exposures in waste pickers.

Background: While there has been increasing global recognition and impetus for action to transform food systems towards greater food security, sustainability and better health outcomes, Israel has only recently begun to focus on the diverse challenges of its food system and its potential for transformation., Methods: An expert opinion survey (n = 50) on Israel's food system was conducted as part of a larger study on the systemic features of Israel's food system transition to understand its policy gaps and find strategies towards a healthy and sustainable food system. The survey ranks the relevance and importance of food system challenges and policy preferences. Policy implications are then examined by identifying potential priorities, gaps and dissensus., Results: The survey finds that there is a majority agreement (76%) that Israel's food policies are lacking or severely lacking. Respondents relate strongly to both concepts of nutritional security (90% think that access to nutritious food is relevant or highly relevant) and national food security (more than 80% perceive food security as part of national security). Respondents overwhelmingly recognize the benefits of Israeli agriculture with 60-90% agreeing or strongly agreeing that it benefits food security, economic value and national identity. Top-ranked problems include overall systemic problems such as the lack of national goals, strategic planning, and integrated policymaking across ministries, and specific ones such as food waste, costly farming inputs, and food affordability. The most preferred policy actions include establishing a national strategy for food and agriculture, making food affordable for vulnerable households, and incentivising sustainable farming methods. The key policy gaps include the lack of resilience in agriculture and the food system, insufficient data and knowledge for policy action, inadequate attention to the regulation of the food industry for better health and inadequate food policy attention for minority groups., Conclusions: Building on this study's findings, further policy research and implementation areas to be covered include government responsibility for universal food security, strategic systemic policies for food systems, prevention and preparedness for future crises, and promoting resilience. Background: In light of the exponential rise in global population, there is a critical requirement to reduce food waste on a global scale. According to studies, agricultural wastes such as oil-seed cakes offer great nutritional value. Acid precipitation (A) and alkaline extraction methods (traditional methods) were used to extract protein from oil-seed cakes; however, both procedures are linked to decreased protein quality and quantity, which prompted the development of a novel strategy known as the biological/microbial/probiotic (B) method. Therefore, the present study aimed to highlight the optimal way of protein extraction from oil-seed cakes and the effect of extraction methods on protein efficacy against obesity. The outcomes were also compared with milk proteins., Results: In vitro study provided evidence that proteins from both sources (plant and milk) suppressed adipogenesis and stimulated adipolysis in 3T3L-1 cells. For the in vivo study, mice were fed with different protein extracts: soya protein preparation (SPP), ground protein preparation (GPP), whey protein (WP) and casein protein (CP) containing 40% of their calories as fat. Body weight decreased significantly in all the rats except CP-fed rats. Body mass index, atherogenic index, plasma triglyceride and very-low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level decreased significantly in all the groups in comparison to the model group (high-fat-diet group), but the decrease was more pronounced in plant proteins than milk proteins. In hepatocytes, the expression of fasting-induced adipose factor, carnitine palmitoyltransferase I and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α genes was increased significantly in SPP-fed groups. Adiponectin gene expression was upregulated significantly in visceral fat tissue in groups fed SPP-B, GPP-A and CP, whereas leptin gene was downregulated significantly in all groups except SPP-A., Conclusion: This study demonstrates that SPP-B showed the most effective anti-obesity property, followed by WP. High energy consumption is the main obstacle of melting/vitrification technology for the disposal of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) for industrial applications. To reduce energy consumption and lower operating costs, oxygen enrichment melting was proposed and studied in this work. This research was conducted in a pilot-scale melting furnace, and three melting conditions were compared and discussed. The results showed that 66% of natural gas was saved and the operating cost was reduced by 55% when oxygen enrichment technology was applied to MSWIFA melting. When coal was used as the fuel with the oxygen enrichment melting technology, the operating cost was even lower at 66.39 dollar/ton of fly ash. Because MSWIFA was a Ca-rich material, the relatively high content of Si and Al in the coal fly ash promoted the formation of vitrificated slag, leading to a reduction in the overall pollution toxicity index (OPTI) of MSWIFA by 99.98%. Meanwhile, SO 2 , HCl, and secondary fly ash were the main pollutants during MSWIFA melting, and when coal was used as the fuel, the emissions of SO 2 and HCl could be reduced and the OPTI of secondary fly ash was suppressed. The solidification/stabilization of heavy metals and valuable component recovery from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash are of great significance for its safe disposal. In this study, MSWI fly ash was transformed into a new solid phase mainly composed of ettringite, achieving the solidification of excessive heavy metal Pb while obtaining a mixed solution of sodium chloride and potassium chloride with extremely low impurity content, which can be recovered by evaporation-crystallization respectively. The solidification mechanism of heavy metal Pb by ettringite was investigated through a combination of DFT calculations and experiments. The results indicate that a high conversion rate of calcium ions (99.68%), separation rate of chloride (95.99%), and conversion rate of heavy metal Pb (99.42%) can be achieved by controlling the ions ratio of the MSWI fly ash reaction system to n(Ca 2+ ):n(Al 3+ ):n(SO 4 2- ) = 6:2:3. DFT calculations show that the reaction pathway of the formation of a vacancy-Pb entering the vacancy at the Ca-2 site of ettringite is more likely to occur. The substitution of heavy metal Pb at the Ca-2 site leads to an increase in the unit cell volume, redistribution of charges, and a decrease in the thermal stability of the ettringite. Awareness is growing that human health cannot be considered in isolation but is inextricably woven with the health of the environment in which we live. It is, however, under-recognized that the sustainability of human activities strongly relies on preserving the equilibrium of the microbial communities living in/on/around us. Microbial metabolic activities are instrumental for production, functionalization, processing, and preservation of food. For circular economy, microbial metabolism would be exploited to produce building blocks for the chemical industry, to achieve effective crop protection, agri-food waste revalorization, or biofuel production, as well as in bioremediation and bioaugmentation of contaminated areas. Low pH is undoubtedly a key physical-chemical parameter that needs to be considered for exploiting the powerful microbial metabolic arsenal. Deviation from optimal pH conditions has profound effects on shaping the microbial communities responsible for carrying out essential processes. Furthermore, novel strategies to combat contaminations and infections by pathogens rely on microbial-derived acidic molecules that suppress/inhibit their growth. There is escalating interest in composting of post-consumption food waste (PCFW) to recycle nutrients and mitigate pollution by inappropriate disposal. The present study aimed to evaluate the performance of bioaugmentation to composting of PCFW, which is in difficulties caused by high sugar, protein and gross lipid content. Inoculation of the microbial consortium effectively induced rapid temperature and pH rising, which led to OM reduction rate at 25.11 % and maturity at 150 % in terms of Germination Index value. EEMs-FRI showed that humification was accelerated in the thermophilic stage and further improved in the mature stage. Bacterial community analysis revealed that microbial inoculant ameliorated acidification, and expedited temperature and pH rising in the initial stage, which in turn accelerated bacteria community succession. The abundance of Actinobacteria was much higher in the thermophilic and mature stage in T2 treatment than in T1, which might explain rapid organic degradation. High temperature enriched thermophilic genera (Thermobifida, Compostibacillus, Neobacillus), and Pseudonocardia and Actinoplanes were enriched in the mature stage, which correlated to effective degradation of organic matter, humification and maturity. Temperature and pH mainly motivated bacterial succession. Biomass pyrolysis is the anoxic thermal conversion of biomass into a carbon rich, porous solid, often called biochar. This could be a better waste management alternative for contaminated organic wastes than incineration, due to the useful properties of biochar and potential for carbon sequestration. There are, however, concerns about the potential formation/destruction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs). Six organic wastes, including digested sewage sludges, wood wastes, and food waste reject, were pyrolyzed (500-800°C) in a full-scale relevant unit (1-5 kg biochar hr -1 ). Removal efficiencies for PCBs and PCDD/Fs were > 99% in the produced biochars. Biochar PAH-content (2.7-118 mgkg -1 ) was not significantly correlated to feedstock or temperature. PAHs (2563-8285 mgkg -1 ), PCBs (22-113 µgkg -1 ), and PCDD/Fs (1.8-50 ngTEQ kg -1 ) accumulated in the pyrolysis condensate, making this a hazardous waste best handled as a fuel for high temperature combustion. Emission concentrations for PAHs (0.22-421 µgNm -3 ) and PCDD/Fs (≤2.7 pgTEQ Nm -3 ) were mainly associated with particles and were below the European Union's waste incineration thresholds. Emission factors ranged from 0.0002 to 78 mg tonne -1 biochar for PAHs and 0.002-0.45 µgTEQ tonne -1 biochar for PCDD/Fs. Landfill leachates are complex mixtures containing very high concentrations of biodegradable and recalcitrant toxic compounds. Understanding the major contaminant components and microbial community signatures in global landfill leachates is crucial for timely decision-making regarding contaminant management and treatment. Therefore, this study analyzed leachate data from 318 landfill sites primarily used for municipal solid waste disposal, focusing on their chemical and microbiological characteristics. The most prevalent and dominant components in landfill leachates are the chemical oxygen demand (COD, 3.7-75.9 × 10 3 mg/L) and NH 4 + (0.03-0.81 × 10 4 mg/L), followed by salt species such as SO 4 2- (0.03-5.25 × 10 3 mg/L), Cl - (3.2-7.8 × 10 3 mg/L), K + (0.58-4.20 × 10 3 mg/L), Na + (1.3-13.0 × 10 3 mg/L) and Ca 2+ (2.35-230.23 × 10 3 mg/L), which exhibit significant fluctuations. Heavy metals and metalloids are widely distributed in most landfill leachates but at relatively low concentrations (<182.8 mg/L) compared to conventional parameters. Importantly, there is a distinct global variation in the occurrence of emerging environmental contaminants (ECs). Among these compounds, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA, 0.02-7.50 × 10 3 μg/L) of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), bisphenol A (BPA, 0.01-33.46 × 10 3 μg/L) belonged to endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs), together with di-ethyltoluamide (DEET, 1.0-1.0 × 10 3 μg/L) affiliated to pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are the most frequently detected in landfill leachates. Additionally, the microbial community compositions in most leachates are primarily dominated by Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, Firmicutes, and Chloroflexi, and some of their abundances are correlated with the concentrations of NH 4 + , NO 3 - , Cl - , Na + and Cr. Notably, the leading microbes driving advanced removal of inorganic nitrogen in the treatment systems are Candidatus Brocadia (anammox), denitrifying Thauera, nitrite-oxidizing bacteria Nitrospira, along with ammonia-oxidizing bacteria Nitrosomonas and Nitrosospira. Whey protein derived bioactives, including α-lactalbumin, ß-lactoglobulin, bovine serum albumin, lactoferrin, transferrin, and proteose-peptones, have exhibited wide ranges of functional, biological and therapeutic properties varying from anticancer, antihypertensive, and antimicrobial effects. In addition, their functional properties involve gelling, emulsifying, and foaming abilities. For these reasons, this review article is framed to understand the relationship existed in between those compound levels and structures with their main functional, biological, and therapeutic properties exhibited either in vitro or in vivo. The impacts of hydrolysis mechanism and separation techniques in enhancing those properties are likewise discussed. Furthermore, special emphasize is given to multifunctional effects of whey derived bioactives and their future trends in ameliorating further food, pharmaceutical, and nutraceutical products. The underlying mechanism effects of those properties are still remained unclear in terms of activity levels, efficacy, and targeted effectiveness. For these reasons, some important models linking to functional properties, thermal properties and cell circumstances are established. Moreover, the coexistence of radical trapping groups, chelating groups, sulfhydryl groups, inhibitory groups, and peptide bonds seemed to be the key elements in triggering those functions and properties. Practical Application: Whey proteins are the byproducts of cheese processing and usually the exploitation of these food waste products has increasingly getting acceptance in many countries, especially European countries. Whey proteins share comparable nutritive values to milk products, particularly on their richness on important proteins that can serve immune protection, structural, and energetic roles. The nutritive profile of whey proteins shows diverse type of bioactive molecules like α-lactalbumin, ß-lactoglobulin, lactoferrin, transferrin, immunoglobulin, and proteose peptones with wide biological importance to the living system, such as in maintaining immunological, neuronal, and signaling roles. The diversification of proteins of whey products prompted scientists to exploit the real mechanisms behind of their biological and therapeutic effects, especially in declining the risk of cancer, tumor, and further complications like diabetes type 2 and hypertension risk effects. For these reasons, profiling these types of proteins using different proteomic and peptidomic approaches helps in determining their biological and therapeutic targets along with their release into gastrointestinal tract conditions and their bioavailabilities into portal circulation, tissue, and organs. The wide applicability of those protein fractions and their derivative bioactive products showed significant impacts in the field of emulsion and double emulsion stabilization by playing roles as emulsifying, surfactant, stabilizing, and foaming agents. Their amphoteric properties helped them to act as excellent encapsulating agents, particularly as vehicle for delivering important vitamins and bioactive compounds. The presence of ferric elements increased their transportation to several metal-ions in the same time increased their scavenging effects to metal-transition and peroxidation of lipids. Their richness with almost essential and nonessential amino acids makes them as selective microbial starters, in addition their richness in sulfhydryl amino acids allowed them to act a cross-linker in conjugating further biomolecules. Safe and sustainable treatment of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI FA) is urgently needed worldwide because of its high heavy metals, dioxin, and chlorine (Cl) contents. Thermal treatment is widely considered as a promising method for treating MSWI FA owing to its high toxic content removal efficiency and resource recovery; however, residual Cl is a concurrent critical problem faced during reutilisation of thermal treatment products. This review summarises the innovative thermal treatment methods of MSWI FA, such as those employed in production of cement, lightweight aggregates, glass slag, and metal alloys. The characteristics of Cl in MSWI FA, removal rate, transformation of water-soluble Cl into water-insoluble Cl, and the effect of different influencing factors such as temperature, composition, superheated steam, and mechanical pressure were analysed. The volatilization and decomposition of NaCl, KCl and CaClOH dominates Cl removal; however, the degradation of organic Cl and heavy metal chlorination volatilization process that generate HCl and heavy metal chlorides, respectively, also contributed to Cl removal. Food waste presents a continuous challenge for the food industry, leading to environmental pollution and economic issues. A substantial amount of waste, including by-products from fruits and vegetables, non-edible food items, and other waste materials, is produced throughout the food supply chain, from production to consumption. Recycling and valorizing waste from perishable goods is emerging as a key multidisciplinary approach within the circular bio-economy framework. This waste, rich in raw by-products, can be repurposed as a natural source of ingredients. Researchers increasingly focus on biomass valorization to extract and use components that add significant value. Traditional methods for extracting these bio-compounds typically require the use of solvents and are time-consuming, underscoring the need for innovative techniques like ultrasound (US) extraction. Wastes from the processing of fruits and vegetables in the food industry can be used to develop functional foods and edible coatings, offering protection against various environmental factors. This comprehensive review paper discusses the valorization of waste from perishable items like fruits and vegetables using US technology, not only to extract valuable components from waste but also to treat wastewater in the beverage industry.
