Abstract

Abstract. CW diode-pumped laser operation of Nd[sup 3+] in Ca[sub 3]Sc[sub 2]Ge[sub 3]O[sub l2] (CaSGG) single garnet crystal has been demonstrated for the first time. We measured an 18% slope efficiency and 2.7-nm tunability with two different laser cavities. A spectroscopic characterization of our sample has also been performed including the absorption cross section in the 800-nm region and the emission cross section and radiative lifetime of the upper laser level. Abstract

We report a compact, efficient, high-energy and high-repetition-rate mid-infrared picosecond optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on a new nonlinear material CdSiP2. The OPO is synchronously pumped by a master-oscillator power-amplifier system at 1064.1 nm, providing 1-s-long macro-pulses constituting 8.6 ps micro-pulses at 450 MHz, and can be tuned over 486 nm across 6091-6577 nm, covering the technologically important wavelength range for surgical applications. Using a compact cavity (~30 cm) and a CdSiP2crystal, idler macro-pulse energy as high as 1.5 mJ has been obtained at 6275 nm, for an input energy of 30 mJ. The extracted signal pulses have durations of 10.6 ps.

Abstract

We report a passively mode-locked picosecond ytterbium-doped fiber laser operating in the normal dispersion regime, tunable over 70 nm around 1.05 μm. Mode-locking operation is achieved through a free-space coupled semiconductor saturable absorber. An external grating in Littrow configuration is used for both tuning and mode-locked stabilization through spectral filtering. Pulse duration of 19 ps with pulse repetition rates below 20 MHz is obtained with a maximum average output power of 1.5 mW. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

This analysis provides a manageable extinction theorem from which the exact solution of the basic equations of molecular optics is obtained for the problem of refraction and reflection of an electromagnetic wave (for simplicity, taken to be a plane one) that is incident upon a linear, homogeneous, isotropic, nonmagnetic dielectric filling a half-space. The method developed may be useful to resolve the fields in a nonlinear material as well as for other problems in which the interaction of an electromagnetic wave and a dielectric medium is concerned.

168. Novel unstable resonator configuration with a self-filtering aperture: experimental characterization of the Nd:YAG loaded cavity

Abstract

A novel cavity design based on a confocal negative branch unstable resonator configuration is presented. A proper choice for the size of the field limiting aperture, set at the common focal plane of the mirrors, results in removal of the hot spot inside the cavity and in the smoothing of the spatial profile of the oscillating mode. Application of this scheme to a pulsed Nd:YAG oscillator is thoroughly characterized in a variety of operational modes (fixed-Q, Q-switching, mode-locking). The main results are a high efficiency of energy extraction and excellent phase and amplitude profiles of the output beam, which shows real transform-limited performances.

Abstract

Numerical simulations of the pulse build up in aQ-switched laser reveal a considerable change in the beam spatial profile during the pulse evolution, on a nanosecond time scale. Such changes were measured experimentally, and the measured temporal evolution of the beam profile is shown to be in good agreement with the theoretical results. The time evolution of the spatial profile translates into an evolution of the beam quality parameterM2; for typical experimental conditions, in a Nd:YAG laser utilizing a variable-reflectivity mirror resonator,M2 is very close to a value of 1 at the beginning of the pulse, and increases smoothly throughout the pulse to reach a value of approximately 2 at the pulse trailing edge.

Abstract

In recent years, progresses in nanotechnology have established the foundations for implementing nanomachines capable of carrying out simple but significant tasks. Under this stimulus, researchers have been proposing various solutions for realizing nanoscale communications, considering both electromagnetic and biological communications. Their aim is to extend the capabilities of nanodevices, so as to enable the execution of more complex tasks by means of mutual coordination, achievable through communications. However, although most of these proposals show how devices can communicate at the nanoscales, they leave in the background specific applications of these new technologies. Thus, this paper shows an overview of the actual and potential applications that can rely on a specific class of such communications techniques, commonly referred to as molecular communications. In particular, we focus on health-related applications. This decision is due to the rapidly increasing interests of research communities and companies to minimally invasive, biocompatible, and targeted health-care solutions. Molecular communication techniques have actually the potentials of becoming the main technology for implementing advanced medical solution. Hence, in this paper we provide a taxonomy of potential applications, illustrate them in some detail, along with the existing open challenges for them to be actually deployed, and draw future perspectives.

Abstract

A wide data collection on blood group gene frequencies in Italian regions and provinces is presented. This report is the result of a joint collaboration of human geneticists and forensic haematologists started in 1979 and updates a previous work by the same group. The following genetic polymorphisms have been examined: red-cell antigens (ABO, FY, Kell, Kidd, Lewis, Lutheran, MNSs, P, Rhesus), red-cell enzymes (ACP1, ADA, AK1, ESD, GLO1, GPT, PGD, PGM1), plasma proteins (BF, C3, GC, HP, IGK, PI, TF). Data have been classified according to genetic systems, Italian regions and provinces. Gene frequencies were estimated by the maximum likelihood method. The goodness of fit to Hardy-Weinberg proportions has been evaluated by the likelihood ratio statistics. Genetic heterogeneity of provinces and regions is reported.
