166. Upcycling and Design for Disassembly – LCA of buildings employing circular design strategies

Abstract

Within the ReSOLVE framework, the concept of 'Looping' materials in an efficient way is a crucial theme to ensure environmental sustainability of circular economy. This paper investigates how current calculation practice of building LCA from the EN 15804/15978 standards affects the global warming potential (GWP) of building designs where material loops have been in focus. In this study, we calculate the environmental potentials of circular building design based on two cases; 1) a building constructed from primarily upcycled materials, and 2) a building constructed with principles of design for disassembly (DfD). Results from the two cases point to the significance of the EN standards' allocation approach in which a system's use of recycling/reuse is merited, rather than meriting a system providing recyclable/reusable materials. Hence, the upcycling strategy results in lower GWP, especially from the production stage, whereas the DfD strategy does not realize an environmental advantage within the framework of the EN standards. Results further shows that even though concrete elements are notable components of the DfD building, developing DfD-solutions for these exact elements might not be the preferred focus for optimizing the environmental benefits provided by the building. Instead, DfD focus could be on shorter-lived elements of high benefit potentials. Abstract

Life cycle assessment (LCA) benchmarking of buildings is highly relevant in certain contexts of building sector practice, for instance in certification schemes or regulation. This study aims at developing a preliminary set of LCA reference values to serve as benchmarks for the Danish construction sector. We analyze the embodied impacts set against the operational impacts of 16 office buildings. We discuss the different approaches to derivation of life cycle benchmarks and identify critical points of attention for the future work with derivation of benchmarks for Danish buildings.

Abstract

This paper describes the Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes Experiment planned for 1994 and 1995 to evaluate a set of hypotheses pertaining to tornadogenesis and tornado dynamics. Observations of state variables will be obtained from five mobile mesonet vehicles, four mobile ballooning laboratories, three movie photography teams, portable Doppler radar teams, two in situ tornado instruments deployment teams, and the T-28 and National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration P-3 aircraft. In addition, extensive use will be made of the new generation of observing systems, including the WSR-88D Doppler radars, demonstration wind profiler network, and National Weather Service rawinsondes.

Abstract

The rat intestinal imino acid carrier is chloride independent, and in rat small intestine, transport of beta-alanine, gamma-aminobutyric acid and taurine may be possible by the amino acid carrier. There is no significant interaction between the imino acid carrier and the alpha-amino-monocarboxylic acids with side chains in excess of one methyl group. The principle carrier of taurine and the only carrier of beta-alanine is the rat amino acid carrier.

Abstract

Doppler radar observations that establish common patterns in the evolution of the reflectivity and flow structures of squall lines are described. A number of squall lines have been analyzed with unprecedented time resolution in order to identify these patterns. All of the squall lines appeared to be approximately two-dimensional and featured a solid leading edge at some time during their life cycle, instead of being composed of discrete cells separated by echo-free regions. A large variety of intensities and evolution time scales was observed. It is shown that squall lines of this type evolve through identifiable stages of reflectivity structure. This evolution appears to be strongly related to changes that occur in the kinematic structure. As a typical system evolves, a rearward-sloping zone of horizontal vorticity, predominantly associated with vertical shear, develops on the scale of the system, presumably driven by the horizontal buoyancy gradients across the system. The vorticity that is generated allows further generation to take place by causing the superposition of a saturated, precipitating anvil cloud aloft over potentially cooler air below in the trailing region. The rearward-sloping vorticity zone gradually tilts toward the horizontal. The rate at which this zone tilts seems to be the primary difference between the systems studied. To a first approximation, the inflow streamlines parallel the sloping vorticity zone, so as it approaches a horizontal slope, vertical motion becomes smaller. Eventually, convective-scale ascent ceases, giving the impression that the gust front has surged out ahead of the precipitation.

Abstract

A study of the mechanisms controlling the secretion of pancreatic spasmolytic polypeptide (PSP) from pig pancreas is presented. PSP is a 106-amino acid peptide isolated form pig pancreatic extracts which is a potential growth factor. The study protocol involved observing PSP secretion in perfused isolated pig pancreas and in pancreatic secretion in response to a meal in young conscious pigs. The results show PSP to be an exocrine product whose secretion is regulated by parasympathetic mechanisms, including cholinergic and peptidergic pathways, and by endocrine mechanisms involving cholecystokinin octapeptide and secretin.
